Research carried out last summer found that the salon and spa industry in Ireland contributes €540m annually to the Irish economy. Phorest Salon Software undertook research to highlight the true value of the industry and bring to the forefront how much Irish salons and spas contribute to the economy. It is estimated that there are are about 4,000 salons and spas across Ireland and, more so than any other industry, they cater for a broad spectrum of the Irish population, from the very young to the elderly. “The salon and spa industry is one that often gets overlooked, its activities and its contributions to the economy do not gain as much media attention or coverage as its Industry counterparts,” said CEO of Phorest Salon Software Ronan Perceval. It’s fitting therefore that the Spa Life International Convention

DMK FOUNDER ADDRESSES SKIN EXPERTS AT AN EVENT IN DUBLIN

A DMK paramedical skincare event was held on 16 and 17 May at the Red Cow Moran Hotel in Dublin by Chleo Enterprises. Have you ever wondered when and how to deploy a spa consultant for your proposed spa? Industry professional Neil Howard from Howard Spa Consulting gives his tips.

D uring my time as a spa consultant I

have met a large number of owners and hotel operators who have called me to meetings to discuss their proposed new spa. It's been an interesting 24 years. I thought I would use the experience gained during this time to share with you how best to deploy a spa consultant as a part of a team of project specialists. Spa consultants of course vary according to precisely the scope of services they offer, so this is the starting point. Some specialise in design services, others focus on setting up an operation, some offer both. Essentially, there will be a need for a spa specialist to understand the market and purpose; create a great concept; develop a layout that has ‘feeling’ and is better than a collection of rectangles; and ensure the operation is caring, professional and five-star. If a spa consultant can be found that can address all these aspects, the end result will benefit from continuity and an integrated approach. One trend I have seen develop recently is for owners and operators to be sold a 'one-stop solution' provided by equipment suppliers, rather than by independent spa consultants. An equipment supplier seeing an opportunity to expand their service beyond selling their equipment is unlikely to understand the whole picture as well as an ex-operator, designer, or preferably someone that has a

complete vision and skill set of how a spa feels, looks and works in operation. I have seen spa layouts devised by suppliers in conjunction with designers and frankly they are disappointing, sterile and lack operational knowledge and emotion.

The message here is to engage the spa consultant before the planning process. Another required discipline is the interior designer, who too often is engaged prior to a spa consultant. This can result in a spa layout being developed by an interior designer that looks great on CAD; beautifully symmetrical; with attractive interior renditions; plus a ’story’, consisting of predictable components and lacking operational intelligence.

This is a worrying industry trend taking advantage of those that are new to developing a spa. While this trend is acceptable for a small residential spa, it's definitely not ideal for a larger spa project that has the potential to be one of the best spas of its type.

Again, if the spa consultant is brought in at conception they can steer the process. I often describe my initial work as creating the right animal and its skeleton: once ready, the designer and lighting consultant should dress it, but don't buy the dress and then look around for something to fit into it. Concept, components and layout should be driven by the spa consultant, not an equipment supplier, architect or interior designer, who all have crucial parts to play. The order in which the specialists are brought onto a project is as important as who they are.

Many new spas require to go through a local planning process. This automatically requires an architect to be engaged at the critical formative stage. Through the process of submitting planning approval the architect has formed the foundation for the future spa that will possess characteristics that are not feasible to undo, if a spa consultant is brought in after the planning process.

As the design and build process develops, the spa consultant acts as the ‘guardian’ of their concept, ensuring that the spa's purpose, feeling, operational practicality and profitability are all kept on track. The spa consultant should then ensure that the visit is realised in operation, not handed over to a spa manager who misinterprets all that has gone before their appointment.

Lindsay’s skincare advice for salons: 1.These days, clients can easily buy their skincare online so a salon skincare brand needs to provide its savvy clients with something different – ie visible results immediately after one treatment. Look for a brand with innovative, up-to-date ingredients to get the best results, and try to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in skincare so your clients are reassured of your expertise. Personally, I would recommend Mila d’Opiz of course, because it has won several awards for its innovative cutting-edge products and the feedback we get from our salon customers is that it is highly effective. 2.The brand should also allow the therapist to fully tailor the treatment to the client’s skin. In a salon or spa with several therapists, it is important to ensure all staff fully understand the brand and how it can be tailored within the bounds of the treatment being offered. I love providing smaller, more personalised training sessions as we can suit the training to the salon, thus enabling them to provide individual prescription facials to their clients. 3.Hyaluronic acid is an important component of the natural moisturising factor in the skin barrier, so this is a great ingredient to have in as many products as possible, as it is highly effective for all skin types. Mila d’Opiz has just launched a new Hylauronic-4 line that contains four different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to penetrate to different levels of the epidermis. 4.Part of a good skincare treatment should be advising clients on the best homecare products to continue the good work. You can greatly increase client loyalty and salon profitability if you have access to effective products. Ideally your brand should provide enough products to treat all types of skin and conditions, even if you don’t keep all of them in stock (although it’s definitely a good idea to keep the most popular ones in stock as sales are much more likely when the product is already available on your shelf). Check out the minimum order quantities and shipping details, and also check out whether samples are included free with orders or how much they will cost you. 5.There are lots of exciting new ingredients on the market, which can really make a difference to the skin. One of the best in recent years is plant stem cell technology, which allow ‘baby’ skin cells to mimic the rejuvenating properties of plants and gives much longer lasting results than other ingredients. Think of how plants grow back after pruning or injury and imagine harnessing that rejuvenation power for the skin!

We are Ireland's first clinic to have the Frax 1550. This machine has only ever been used by dermatologists in the UK. Not only that but we have also undergone major renovations from floor to ceiling, We now have six treatment rooms, a tanning room, three nail desks, a staff kitchen/storage area and a spacious reception area.

What are your plans for the business for the rest of the year? Making my clients who are beautiful on the inside even more beautiful on the outside. Twenty years in business this year and I am still living the dream! I am grateful for every day, let’s enjoy today and think about tomorrow when it comes!

How do you keep up with new trends? I regularly attend beauty shows and seminars in Ireland, the UK and Italy. I also do a lot of research into new products and treatments myself before introducing them to the salon. We are constantly introducing the most innovative and up-todate treatments, this is the key to running any successful business. Do you run the salon alone? No, absolutely not! I have an amazing family behind me, the late nights and endless hours of working behind the scenes are all behind running a successful business. We all have our own part to play in the business – myself and my daughter

What does the award mean to you? I was ecstatic and so overwhelmed to win. My family, my parents, my sister Jackie and her husband and my wonderful girls were all with us on the evening and it was so emotional and exciting to share this amazing award with them. I felt they won this award too as they have supported me all through the years in every way possible. We have been inundated with messages, emails and phone calls congratulating us on our win. We received gorgeous bouquets of flowers and the support from Glanmire and the wider Cork City area has been phenomenal.

‘Screen Face’: The Potential Harm That HEV Light Can Cause To The Skin by Jennifer Rock

We are well aware of the damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. As beauty professionals, we can spout out facts and figures about UVA and UVB related photodamage for days on end. HEV light, however, is a more recent concern, one of which there are few solidly conclusive studies or research papers available to us on. HEV light is known as blue light or high-energy visible light and it is a light emitted from computer screens, TVs, phones and tablets.

The fear is not of HEV light itself, it is of the possible effects on the skin, colloquially named ’screen face’. Overexposure to blue light is said to impair the skin’s barrier function which leads to premature skin ageing and some researchers have seen a correlation between blue light exposure and problems with pigmentation. Blue light is a form of visible light that is between 400 to 450 nanometres on the visible light spectrum. If you are trained in light therapy, you’ll have already come across this type of light in LED light therapy. The reason that blue light is not harmful when used in LED light therapy is because it is controlled usage, for example, for one hour a week. The issue is that people are being exposed to blue light near constantly in the era of the smartphone. If we aren’t in front of a screen at work, we’re on our phone or watching TV. I would estimate that the majority of people spend at least 10 hours per day looking at a screen of some kind. Even though the evidence on whether blue light actually causes problems with pigmentation such as hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation or impairs the skin’s barrier function is not set in stone, I would personally believe that we should all err on the side of caution and protect ourselves from potential ‘screen face’. How do we protect our own skin and the skin of our clients from HEV-related damage? An ingredient that many cosmeceutical brands have latched on to as their blue light protectant is lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid, an organic pigment made by plants and algae.

In clinical studies, lutein has been proven to help protect the skin from visible light damage and it is also known to protect the retina when ingested in supplement form. Lutein can be applied topically, primarily in the form of HEV protectant sunscreens, and taken as a supplement. Another mode of protection is antioxidant skincare products to protect from the increased susceptibility to free radical damage caused by an impaired barrier. Ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E and phloretin can provide the skin with defence against the environmental aggressors that lead to oxidative stress and related concerns like lax, slack skin, elastosis and pigmentation in the long term. Studies have shown so far that it is unlikely that HEV light contributes to skin cancer. When it comes to types of photoprotection in the beauty industry, in my opinion, it is still worthwhile to keep a focus on UVA and UVB protection but have an option to offer to clients who present with concerns about blue light and HEV. It is set to be a trend in skincare in 2018 and 2019 and with that it may become a greater concern of your clientele.

MAXIMISE YOUR MERCHANDISING AND INCREASE BEAUTY RETAIL SALES The sales process begins the moment your clients enter the salon or spa, not when you place the products in front of them, writes Liz McKeon. As beauty therapists, it is your professional duty to give clients the best possible recommendations on home-care products, offering the highest level of salon customer service. It’s easy to undervalue the importance of sales in a beauty salon. Start educating your clients to buy from you – as a beauty therapist, you have the training, the professional knowledge and the experience: start using it! People really enjoy spending – that’s why it’s called ‘retail therapy’! Clients have a desire to purchase new products. If you don’t seize the opportunity to sell to your clients someone else will. Next time you visit a large store, go and observe the staff at the skin-care counters at work. Just watch how many products they sell. This experience will be motivating enough for you to start selling to your clients. How to increase sales in beauty retail In your salon, create the space to sell, then maximise that space. A well-stocked salon shop will strengthen your identity. It creates awareness of your products and begins to help plant a seed that can develop a desire to buy.

Products should be accessible, clearly priced and well-positioned. Display your products soldier style so clients feel comfortable removing them. Soldier lines march out the door, pretty displays stay pretty on the shelf! Make sure your clients are able to browse, touch and pick up products. Utilise key areas such as reception desk and coffee table for impulse buys. The quality and standard of your displays should reflect the quality and standard of your salon, and the goods and services that you offer. Displays, both in the window and in-salon, can be used to convey various messages, such as promotions, a change of season, a new product or service or even a desired lifestyle. Try to create warm, positive feelings in your clients through your displays by highlighting the features and benefits of the products and services. Stock skilfully arranged on display should attract passers by, and trigger impulse purchases by creating a desire within your clients to own the goods. Develop a positive sales environment, think like a retailer and start to gain the sales that are rightfully yours!

Observe your retail displays. Make sure that retail units are well positioned in your retail area, so your clients feel comfortable to browse. Fully-stocked retail units sends the correct message to potential shoppers, that is, we are passionate and firm believers in what we are selling and we have invested in good quality products to reinforce your treatment.

BUSTING SUNBED MYTHS Did you see our Sunbed Awareness Week campaign that ran across social media from 14–20 May? Each day a different myth was posted across supported by a video giving more information on busting that day’s myth. The response has been really quite amazing, with salons and consumers engaging on what we had identified at the top seven sunbed myths. There’s no doubt entrenched views about responsible sunbed use need to be addressed and this campaign has made a focused start on doing just that, as well as driving additional footfall into Sunbed Association member salons. Member salons are now able to reinforce these messages through their own marketing with posters, leaflets and social media imagery. People love to tan and it’s important that those who choose to tan and have no contra-indications to tanning, can do so in an environment where they will receive the correct advice and information about responsible tanning in a well maintained

and managed salon – and that is what Sunbed Association members deliver.
