FAMILIES URGE GOVERNMENT TO FUND LIFE CHANGING DRUG

Families met recently with Minister for Disabilities Finian McGrath and Deputy Mary Lou McDonald in a meeting facilitated by Senator Rose Conway-Walsh in Leinster House to discuss access to life changing drug Translarna, a treatment for boys with a specific type of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Translarna slows down the progress of DMD. There are five boys in the Republic of Ireland fighting for access to the drug that could help them keep walking. Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) and the families have called on the HSE to reconsider its decision to not fund Translarna. Campaigning for the reimbursement of the drug is Anne Marie Harte, mother of five-yearold Lewis, who has DMD. Lewis is eligible for the treatment. “It is so unfair knowing that there is a treatment out there that can help

our son but it is being denied to him,” said Harte. “This is a race against time that we don’t have, it’s simply agonising.” Consultant paediatric neurologist at Temple Street Hospital Dr. Declan O’Rourke added: “Treatment with Translarna may change the course of the disease and help delay key milestones, potential improving an overall life expectancy of patients. Considering the high unmet need, the burden of DMD on society and the clinically meaningful trial use of Translarna and its well tolerated safety profile it was very disappointing to hear of the HSE Drugs Group decision not to reimburse this treatment. l hope that the meeting will help provide a pathway for a successful outcome for the boys and families at the heart of the issue.”

GUIDELINES FOR RETAILERS USING CUSTOMERS’ EMAILS FOR MARKETING New guidelines for retailers focused on the use of customers’ email addresses for marketing purposes have been published by the Data Protection Commission. The publishing of the guidelines come following recent reports in TheJournal.ie that the Data Protection Commissioner was looking into the issue following numerous complaints from consumers. Complaints centred around retailers who were using email addresses that had been taken for e-receipt purposes, for marketing purposes.

JENNIFER ZAMPARELLI IS FACE OF PREGNACARE’S NEW ‘KEEPING MUM’ CAMPAIGN Pregnacare has announced TV and radio personality Jennifer Zamparelli as its brand ambassador for its ‘Keeping Mum’ campaign. She has previously worked with Pregnacare following the birth of her first child in 2015 and is expecting her second child in early 2018. As part of the campaign Pregnacare commissioned a survey, which found that Irish mums are sticking to tradition when it comes to sharing their baby news. Nearly three-quarters (71%) prefer to keep their pregnancy under wraps until at least 12 weeks. A total of 22% of respondents said they couldn’t keep it a secret and everyone knew by the eight-week mark, but 50% of those surveyed said they told family and friends at the end of the first trimester. Meanwhile, 21% said they actually waited longer and didn’t tell people until later. DEMENTIA: UNDERSTAND TOGETHER LAUNCHES TV CAMPAIGN

Consultant psychiatrist and chair of the Dementia: Understand Together campaign Prof Brian Lawlor with Dr Sabina Brennan, professor of psychology, Trinity College Dublin A new TV, radio and online advertising campaign to increase understanding and support for people living with dementia has been launched by the Minister for Health Simon Harris as part of the Dementia: Understand Together initiative. PUBLIC URGED TO SEEK ADVICE FROM PHARMACIST ON HEARTBURN The recent annual National Heartburn Awareness Week, which took place in October, highlighted a condition that affects over half of the population. This year it not only aimed to help those who suffer from heartburn, but also raised awareness among a wider population on avoiding it. Supported by Pfizer Ireland, the initiative advised the public to speak to their pharmacist and find a remedy to best treat the common, yet debilitating ailment. It’s something that can be treated easily and be solved without a visit to the GP. In addition to speaking to a pharmacist, some top tips for heartburn sufferers include not eating late at night; adding acid neutralising foods to the diet; reducing tea and coffee intake; and not smoking.

MATER REACHES ROBOTIC ASSISTED SURGERIES MILESTONE The Mater Private Hospital in Dublin has performed the highest number of robotic assisted surgeries in Ireland with close to 2,000 surgeries complete to date since the hospital invested €2 million in a da Vinci robot just over seven years ago. Over 1,600 of these have been robotic assisted prostatectomies to treat prostate cancer patients. Surgeons in the Mater Private Hospital have also performed over 150 hysterectomy surgeries with robotic assistance over the last four years. KINVARA SKINCARE RECOGNISED BY INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN Kinvara Skincare has become the first Irish skincare brand to be recognised by the international campaign ‘Beat the Microbead’ for its outright ban of microbeads in all of its products. In September, the brand was given the recognition from the international organisation that champions for the ban of micro plastic beads from all cosmetic products worldwide. Microbeads are mostly used in soaps, shower gels and facial scrubs. Kinvara Skincare has opposed the use of the non-biodegradable microbeads in all of its products. “As a sustainable brand, it’s important to show leadership and help bring awareness to the use of microbeads and their destructive impact on our oceans,” said Joanne Reilly, founder of Kinvara Skincare (pictured). “We live by the sea in Kinvara, we swim in it, sail in it and use harvested seaweeds in our products, the sea and marine ecosystem are incredibly important to us. We hope other Irish skincare brands will join us in the campaign.” The first study to show plastic contamination in tap water worldwide was published this September by Orb Media, a global non-profit newsroom based in Washington DC. It reports that Irish samples are alarmingly well in excess of the global norm.

CLANWILLIAM PHARMACIST AWARDS SHORTLIST REVEALED A total of 24 pharmacists from across the country were shortlisted for the 2017 Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards. In September, an adjudicating panel comprised of respected pharmacists from various branches of the profession met to go through the nominations received. Together they selected three finalists for each category, recognising each of them for having a positive impact in the life of an individual and in some cases, a whole community while performing their duty.

McQuillan’s Pharmacy in Co Louth McQuillan's Pharmacy, Blackrock Village, Co Louth has recently added sister brands Misslyn and Artdeco to its range. Owner Brian McQuillan has seen business going from strength to strength since moving into his premises a decade ago, particularly in the beauty/cosmetics retail space. RETAILERS RECEIVE UNFAIR COMMERCIAL RATES INCREASES IN 2018 Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the sector, has expressed its concern regarding the impending spike in the commercial rates bill for many retailers arising from the ongoing revaluation of commercial properties by the Valuations Office. New research carried out on behalf of Retail Ireland on the recently completed national commercial property valuation programme, ‘Reval 2017’, highlights that the majority of retailers are facing substantial and unforeseen increases to their rates bills for the forthcoming year. In some local authority areas, close to 60% of retailers will see increases in their rates bills. Director of Retail Ireland Thomas Burke said: “This data shows that there has been, and continues to be, a significant shift of the rates burden towards the retail sector through this revaluations process. It appears that retailers are outside of the reported claims that 60% of businesses will see a rates reduction following revaluation. It is the opposite in fact, with far more losing out. This clearly shows that the retail sector is being targeted to allow discounts to be applied to other sectors. “Retailers are increasingly paying a greater share of the total commercial rates bill, a

position which threatens to undermine the competitiveness of the sector and places jobs and future investment in danger. The contribution from the retail sector in Kilkenny, Westmeath and South Dublin is greater than the commercial rates income of 21 local authorities. “They are shouldering an unfair share of commercial rates increases, and is simply not sustainable for a sector where cost recovery remains virtually impossible due to continually falling prices and growing market competition.” Burke said Retail Ireland was calling on the Government to “urgently begin a process to review the impact commercial rates are having on local businesses, and to begin a meaningful discussion with affected parties about how the current broken system can be reformed to ensure retailers don’t continue to shoulder an unfair and undue burden.”

Take a bath in baking soda! Yes, a cup of baking soda with two cups of epsom salts will help draw out toxins, alkalise the body, ease muscle tension and enhance sleep.

And on the subject of sleep, get enough of it by going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting up early the following day. A good sleep routine is crucial.

Get some regular exercise.

Avoid black tea, coffee and alcohol and instead opt for drinks like herbal teas.

Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hot water with lemon in the morning is a great way to kickstart a detox as it improves digestion, removes impurities and has antiseptic properties.

Try to avoid processed foods and instead eat food in its natural state and cooked by steaming, boiling or poached to keep its goodness.

Stick with the five a day rule, which is to eat at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day.

Try not to eat too much meat for a period of time to give your body a break after all that turkey and ham.

Give your good bacteria a chance to outnumber bad bacteria by eating probiotic rich food such as live yoghurt and cottage cheese.

All of the above will give people’s bodies the best chance to stay healthy over the colder winter months. ADVISING YOUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT GIVING UP IN 2018! The New Year tends to be a time when people decide to quit smoking and often their local pharmacy is their first port of call when they’re looking for advice on how to to it. Many smokers think of giving up, but quitting is not that simple. This is due to development of dependence on nicotine. Being a psychoactive drug, nicotine is pretty much addictive, making a regular smoker used to the presence of nicotine in their circulatory system. Stopping smoking brings along a bunch of withdrawal symptoms that can tempt the smoker to start smoking again. However, the symptoms may last for about two to four weeks and it is the first four weeks of the quitting session where your assistance is of great value. Symptoms include: • Sleep disturbance • Lack of concentration • Depression • Irritability • Constipation • Mouth ulcers • Restlessness • Light headedness • Urge to smoke

Another substitute for tobacco is e-cigarette; this is quite less toxic. But this product is still controversial. 6.Keep congratulating them on their determination. 7. TOP TIPS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THIS WINTER … WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE VICTORIANS It’s estimated that on average we will catch two to four colds a year. That’s 233 colds during a lifetime, which is not so surprising when you consider that our immune system is under constant attack from modern day pollution, germs, viruses and stress. These impact on our body’s ability to stay strong against winter coughs and colds, and can leave us feeling pretty dreadful. A good diet of natural foods, rich in antioxidants and healthy bug-busting nutrients can help to protect against bacteria and viruses, however research has shown that the modern Western dietary choices and changing present day food production methods have lead to a sharp decrease of these super nutrients being ingested into the body. In contrast, it’s surprising to know that during the Victorian era, despite infant mortality being significantly higher, generally life expectancy was not much lower than the present day. In addition, studies have shown that people alive in the Victorian age generally had stronger immune systems and better all-round health.1 One of the key factors to contribute to the Victorians’

highly robust immune systems was their consumption of the naturally occurring polysaccharides, 1-3, 1-6 beta-glucans, which are found in the cell wall of fungi and yeasts. The Victorians loved to indulge and consume stoneground bread and unfiltered beer, which contain large amounts of yeast, plus fruits, vegetables and grains which were untreated with chemicals and so had plenty of natural fungi growing on the surface. This meant that unlike modern foods that are generally much more highly processed, the Victorians ate a diet extremely rich in these super nutrients. Beta-glucans are believed to help improve the body’s resistance to infection by deceiving the body into thinking that it is under attack and stimulating the body’s immune response. This keeps the immune system primed and ready to defend itself against pathogens and foreign invaders. Research has found that beta-glucans may help reduce the symptoms of the common cold, as well as the number of days people take off work. One study also found that

VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS IPR those who took beta-glucans had 23% less upper respiratory infections.2 A further study found that by taking a daily supplement of beta-glucans, the severity of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms was reduced, in addition to the possibility of the body overreacting to otherwise harmless substances such as ragweed pollen.3,4 Unfortunately today we are less likely to experience the health benefits of beta-glucans in our natural day-to-day diet in the way that the Victorians would have. We are, however, able to include these missing super nutrients into our diet through supplements, such as Solgar Beta Glucans & Elderberry Immune Complex, which takes its immune supporting* inspiration from our Victorian ancestors, to help us get through times of stress and the Autumn and Winter months. The virus is then able to use the cell as its host whilst it multiplies in number before moving on to infect more cells. Beta glucans and elderberry work synergistically together in helping the immune system fight back against this process. Elderberry is thought to work by coating the virus which

mean that its spikes are no longer able to penetrate through cell walls.6 The immobolised virus can then be ingested by immune cells (white blood cells), especially those that have been primed for activity from previously coming into contact with beta glucans. A recent study showed that supplementation of elderberry before the development of colds reduced the severity and duration of flu.7,8,9 One such study found that influenza symptoms decreased 48 hours following supplementation and lasted just 2-3 days in 90% of patients in comparison to 6 days in the placebo group.9 In recent years it has been suggested that low levels of vitamin D in winter increases susceptibility to flu, and the UK flu levels peak in February when our vitamin D levels are at the lowest. Our vitamin D levels dip during the autumn and winter months as we cannot manufacture it from the sun during this time, and so the UK government now recommends that everyone living in the UK should supplement with vitamin D from October to March. In a large study of 19,000 people, those who had low levels of vitamin D were 40% more likely to have had a respiratory infection.10 Vitamin C is one of the first supplements people reach for if a cold or flu takes hold and numerous studies have shown that it may reduce the occurrence as well as the severity and duration of symptoms.11-15 Ester-C® is a patented form of vitamin C which is pH neutral (gentle on the stomach) and is retained within immune cells in the

body for up to 24 hours.16-17 Research suggests that Ester-C® not only reduces the incidence of upper respiratory symptoms during the cold and flu season but also the duration of the infection, number of symptoms and the rate of reoccurrence.17 There are also lifestyle measures we can make to help boost immunity, such as reducing our sugar intake. One study found that consuming 100 grams of sugar significantly reduced the ability of white blood cells to destroy foreign particles and microorganisms for several hours.18 Cutting back on alcoholic drinks, which are often high in sugar, may also be helpful, whilst one alcoholic drink will not impair the immune system, three or more drinks appear to have a marked detrimental effect. Excessive alcohol also depletes the body of minerals such as zinc which play an important role in the normal development and function of

the immune system.19 So rather than waiting until a cold or flu has taken hold this winter, why not take some simple steps to help ensure that your immune system is primed and ready to fight back. *Vitamin C and D, zinc and copper contribute to the normal function of the immune system.

Magic moments

Just because your pharmacy is busy doesn’t mean you should stop attracting more customers in. Create a Christmas atmosphere inside and outside your premises. Music and movement are traditional attention-getters, but aroma can be an overlooked resource to assist shoppers to part with their money. Sound, smell and visual merchandise will get attention where a pretty, but static and ordinary display may go unnoticed. Make sure you have good point of sale (POS) material, both in the windows and on your shelves to highlight your gift offers and draw people in off the street. Your POS should reflect the quality of the products you are selling and the image of your pharmacy. Keep your display clean, presentable and merchandised regularly. Always be fully stocked, especially if certain lines are selling well. Remember you can’t sell what’s not on the shelf.

Continue to focus on voucher sales. Send an email newsletter to your database highlighting the benefits of gift vouchers.

Announcements about gift voucher availability can help to increase voucher sales and promote your brand. Ensure your website explains how easy it is to purchase gift vouchers from you. How important is being a ‘local pharmacy’ to your business and how do you approach community relations? Being a local family pharmacy is extremely important to our business. We regularly see the same people on a daily and weekly basis and they become our friends as well as our customers. We have extremely good customer loyalty and we are seen as an advice centre for all medical and skincare needs, so much so because of our customers and our expertise we have won numerous competitions and awards for some of the top skincare brands. Our approach to community relations would be on a one to one with our customers. We also get involved with local community activities,

schools etc. We are always on hand to give our time and advice when needed. What purchasing trends do you expect to see for the remainder of the year? We run a lot of skincare promotions in the run up to Christmas and offer great value to our customers and we tailor gifts to their personal needs. December is our busiest month because we offer a great range of gifts but January would also be very busy for different reasons, for example it’s the cold and flu season. Also January is all about your health so we give advice on smoking cessation, diet, good vitamin supplements and probiotics to mention a few.

What health concerns have been affecting your customers most in recent times? The cold and flu season has affected our customers earlier this year than recent years. Viruses are lasting a very long time so we are spending a lot of time advising our customers on how to get back to full health. Are there any economic issues that you think might affect your business in the coming months? The proliferation of low cost dispensing pharmacy in my view is nothing but a race to the bottom. I believe in bringing our customers a fair and reasonable price offering. In my view if you concentrate on the customer service and offer value rather than being the cheapest pharmacy you can have a profitable business into the future.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO YOUR PHARMACY WITHOUT YOU? Often the owner of a pharmacy insures it against all types of events. But if something happens to the owner themselves the business can be left very exposed, explains Ted Dwyer. If you have a pharmacy the most important business asset of all is you the owner. In many situations the death or serious illness of the business owner will have a catastrophic effect on a pharmacy business if there is no life insurance in place. This is specifically referred to as key person insurance. Accidents and illness can and do happen to pharmacists too! Sometimes they even die prematurely. If the pharmacy is a limited company it is possible for the company itself to effect key person insurance on the key people in the company. This will pay money in the event of the death or serious illness of the company owner. This is different, but complementary, to the more commonly used income protection insurance, which pays a large percentage of the salary of an employee or business owner who is unable to work as a result of accident or illness. My own personal situation showed me first-hand experience of how important key person cover could be in my own business. In early 2009 I was diagnosed with prostate

cancer. Luckily it was diagnosed early as a result of a blood test by my vigilant GP and I headed to Galway for treatment. Yes, our company did have some serious illness cover on my life and yes it was very comforting to know that as I headed on my cancer treatment journey the claim from my serious illness insurance plan was being paid. I was comforted by the fact that even if my treatment was prolonged my company would have the cash from the claim to stay financially healthy. A final but important point for many pharmacy businesses concerns debt. Remember, banks don’t really lend to companies. They lend to individuals who they think will be able to run a successful business so that the loan can be repaid over time. If those individuals don’t get the time to pay down business debt due to health reasons, then the money from key person insurance can protect the business owner and their family from banks and other creditors. And really, we have arrived at the nub of key person life or

critical illness insurance. It is to give the company financial strength so that it can continue to trade and meet its ongoing obligations – even if the key person dies or has a serious health issue. Quite simply, the next time you are looking at your insurance affairs and the risks in your business, don’t forget to cover yourself!

SEASONAL STAFF YOUR LEGAL OBLIGATIONS As business picks up at this time of year and you hire extra workers, bear in mind what your legal obligations are, explains our HR experts Peninsula. The Christmas retail season sees many employers hiring extra staff to provide additional support to deal with the rush. The benefit of these seasonal workers is that they are there for the busy times and in January when things take a natural slow down their contact is concluded. There are many advantages and disadvantages tpo hiring seasonal workers, however we are more interested in protecting your business so we have summarised an employer’s legal obligations when hiring seasonal workers on fixed-term contracts. Need to have a genuine reason for issuing a fixed-term contract. It is important the employees hired are aware that they are only being hired for the specific purpose of being a Christmas temporary worker. The Protection of Employees (Fixed-Term Work) Act is very clear that there must be a genuine business reason for a fixed-term contract, and even though they may only be employed for two months they are still entitled to receive a contract of employment explaining that employment is temporary and also to receive a copy of the company handbook. What do I need to do when the contract date expires?

The contract will naturally come to end on whatever date or event is specified in the contract. The employee should on this date return any company property such as access cards, uniforms etc and the employers should issue any outstanding payment owed to the employee in their final pay. Training on company policies and procedures. It is important that training on company policies is provided so that seasonal employees are aware of what they must adhere to. This is especially the case in respect of policies relating to health and safety, working time etc. Despite the temporary and short nature of the work, employers are still susceptible to claims under the Organisation of Working Time Act, the Equality Acts, and Health & Safety legislation. It is important that they are aware of company policies and procedures with particular focus on bullying and harassment procedures. Can I keep on an employee that is a hard worker? Quite often employers will find that a temporary worker that they hire for seasonal work is a good fit for their organisation and they may wish to keep them on. But they will need to be careful about how they proceed. If there is a position for that particular employee

to fill they should be offered a permanent contract unless there is a justifiable reason as to why to you are issuing them with another fixed -term contract. If a tribunal was to find that an employer has abused the use of a fixed-term contract then they face a maximum award of two years’ salary. Recruitment and selection. Recruitment and selection is an area that many of our clients can find themselves in trouble over. Employers should be aware of the nine grounds of discrimination and ensure to keep records of applications and interview notes on file for one year. This is to minimise the risk of an equality claim on any of the following grounds; gender, age, race, sex, civil status, sexual orientation, family status, disability, membership of the traveller community.

Remember, it is critical that a fixed-term contract is only set up when there is a genuine reason for doing so, such as the completion of specific project or a time associated task.
