ALONE WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF €3M TO TACKLE LONELINESS Alone, the charity that supports older people to age at home, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a €3m fund, separate to the mental fund, which will be used to combat loneliness across Ireland. It said that the move is welcome recognition from the Government of the seriousness of loneliness as a health issue and highlights the willingness to tackle it. Alone CEO Seán Moynihan collaborated with Senator Keith Swanick to form the Loneliness Taskforce, an initiative to coordinate a response to loneliness and social isolation in Ireland. The Loneliness Taskforce endeavours to increase awareness about the issue and to achieve the implementation of a set of recommendations set out for Government, State agencies and all policy-makers. “This news is a significant achievement for

the Loneliness Taskforce and the ongoing work across Ireland to highlight the loneliness epidemic, which is affecting people of all age groups,” said Moynihan. “Alone is proud to have worked on this for more than a year with Senator Swanick and the other members of the taskforce. Our work has highlighted just how important this is to people across Ireland and we welcome the Government’s response. “Loneliness can seriously impact your physical and mental health, and evidence has shown that older people experiencing high levels of loneliness are almost twice as likely to die within six years compared to those who are not lonely. It is vital to support grassroots community organisations which have emerged because they have witnessed, first-hand, the need to combat loneliness, and to ensure supports are community-led.”

CAREPLUS PHARMACY AND NOVI STRIKE IT DEAL

MD of Novi George O’Dowd with Finn McCann, technology and systems director, CarePlus Pharmacy

Novi has designed and implemented a new IT infrastructure for CarePlus Pharmacy in a deal worth €200,000. The new solution from the secure IT and cloud service provider will enhance data security and mobile working capabilities for CarePlus Pharmacy customers and all employees. In 2015, the first CarePlus Pharmacy store opened in Cork and the franchise has since grown to over 60 locations across the country. The CarePlus support team provides IT services to each of these pharmacies and given the speed and scale of the franchise’s growth, the group’s needs quickly outstripped the capability of its IT systems. “Our IT team were spending too much time addressing IT infrastructure issues,” said Finn

McCann, technology and systems director, CarePlus Pharmacy. “Without Novi we would have been forced to significantly grow our in-house IT team at a time when competition for talent is high. Novi’s expertise solved this problem and enhanced our productivity by eliminating IT downtime and allowing us to focus on our core business. As well as enabling growth, Novi has provided us with peace of mind that our data is protected. “Despite operating in an environment where the prevalence of SME-targeted cyber attacks are on the rise, Novi has put us at much greater ease knowing we have multiple layers of security features and a secure back-up of our systems in place.”

ALLCARE GO ALL OUT Allcare Pharmacy is now the official sponsor of The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio 1, which reaches more than 220,000 listeners who tune in daily. As part of the sponsorship, Allcare Pharmacy will be featured on air through five 10-second ‘stings’ – short but impactful ads – each day. According to Allcare, these stings will highlight the great things customers and patients experience in its community pharmacies across the country. “Allcare is a well-loved Irish pharmacy brand supporting families in communities across Ireland,” said Siobhán Flynn, marketing director at Allcare Pharmacy. “Our partnership with The Ray D’Arcy Show, which is listened to in communities across the country, is a perfect fit for us.”

8 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

Siobhán Flynn and Ray D’Arcy

Allcare is the largest Irish-owned network of pharmacies in the country. This partnership reflects the growing importance we have in providing health and care services in Ireland, and is only one of several exciting and innovative developments it has planned for 2019.

FERTILITY COACH RECOMMENDS PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN FOR AFTER-SEX SELF-CARE

There should be a public health campaign to encourage after-sex self-care, according to fertility coach Helena Tubridy, who is a qualified midwife. She is calling on GPs to advise women and men to look after themselves post-sex. “Not all cystitis cases or UTIs are as a result of sex,” she said. “However, many of them are due to women, and men, not urinating or washing straight away after sex. The idea we get from films to ‘cuddle up’ after sex, or fall asleep shortly afterwards is not a good idea. Sex causes bacteria to become lodged in the urethra, especially for women. Peeing straight afterwards and washing with a shower or bidet is the best way to remove this bacteria and ensure a healthy urethra. Doctors should tell women who are sexually active this important information, when they are prescribing the pill etc. Men should also know, it is less common for them, but it’s still a health issue. “There are lots of UTIs and kidney infections that are caused by reasons other than sex but at least we should address self-care as one possible aspect. It’s still a little reserved in Ireland in relation to sex, but self-care if you’re sexually active in my opinion is a health issue of importance.” Tubridy recently completed her master’s thesis on fertility treatment in Irish clinics through the lens of the male patient.

NEWS IN BRIEF Hormone Health Week took place at the end of March and Cleanmarine was on hand to help with advice and support for women of all ages by hosting a series of in-store hormone advice events over the week. Cleanmarine’s female hormone health advisor visited pharmacies and health stores throughout the country to discuss female hormone regulation at every stage of life, from teens right the way through to menopause. Customers were invited to pop in to talk hormone health and pick up their free copy of The Essential Guide to Female Hormones, which featured information on how to manage female hormone health right through the five life stages. Recent research has revealed a significant lack of trust amongst the general public in the health and medical information they consume online, with only 15pc of those polled considering health websites to be very trustworthy. Levels of trust in social media and online discussion forums are revealed to be even lower with just 4pc and 5pc of respondents, respectively, seeing these sources as very trustworthy for healthcare information. The results were revealed as part of new research from Ipsos MRBI and commissioned by MSD Ireland. It examined the views of a nationally representative sample of Irish people into the impact of easily accessible information in managing our health and found significant public support (73pc) for the introduction of a registered trust mark confirming that health information online has been verified by a recognised medical authority.

Tallaght University Hospital has been holding its Spring/Summer Series of Community Health talks, a multidisciplinary-led initiative that is run in partnership with the Patient Community Advisory Council. Building on last year’s success the series consists of nine community talks on a wide range of health issues from kidney disease from both a clinical and dietary perspective, to the chronic lung disease COPD and information we should all know on how to spot the signs of a stroke. The health topics were chosen following extensive engagement with services users and the local community that attended the talks last year.

HAY FEVER ADVISING YOUR CUSTOMERS ON THE RIGHT COURSE OF ACTION The summer months can be problematic for hay fever sufferers. Here’s some handy information for any customers coming to the counter with the dreaded symptoms. For many people, the arrival of the summer unfortunately translates to the arrival of sneezing season. The longer evenings, better weather and the flowering of plants is not good news for those with hay fever or seasonal allergic rhinitis as it is known medically. The condition is an allergic reaction to pollen and spores. High levels of pollen in the air can ruin summer for hay fever sufferers. In Ireland, the high pollen season begins some time in June, depending on the part of the country, but of course there is seasonal variation also and the exact start date will depend on what the weather is like throughout the preceding months. The better the weather, the shorter the pollen season is, but pollen levels will be higher. If the summer is bad, pollen levels will be lower, but the season will last longer. As in other countries, the worst days in Ireland for hay fever sufferers are hot, sunny days with light winds and no rain. Continued on page 12

SYMPTOMS The condition mainly affects the nose, blocking it up or making it itchy and runny. Sinuses can get blocked too, causing headaches. A stuffed or runny nose is often accompanied by sneezing. Overproduction of mucus can lead to coughing, watering eyes and a postnasal drip. In some, the eyes and throat can develop an itch too. As the symptoms are so similar, many hay fever sufferers might mistakenly think they have a cold. But the symptoms of a cold will ease after a few days, whereas the symptoms of hay fever will remain as long as the sufferer remains exposed to the pollen. TREATMENT The first port of call for many people with hay fever is the pharmacy. Symptoms can be alleviated by a wide range of over the counter products, so make sure you are familiar with what your pharmacy has in stock. Predominantly, these products contain antihistamines, drugs that block the production of histamine in the body, thereby preventing the runny nose and itchy, watering eyes. Some people find that it is enough simply to address their most problematic symptom, treating their blocked nose with a nasal spray or oral decongestant to improve breathing. Don’t forget too to make customers aware of the side effects of any product you are suggesting they use. Some over the counter preparations can cause drowsiness and can react with alcohol and users should be careful with machinery or driving a car. If a person returns without having any relief from the over the counter product, refer them to the pharmacist or advise them to see their GP. Experts believe that hay fever sufferers will get relief at the beach, no prescription required! This is because on a high pollen day, with a light breeze, you will actually get clean air off the sea at the beach. But prevention is better than cure so make sure your pharmacy advises any regular hay fever sufferers that by coming in before the onset of pollen season, they have the best chance of getting through it and even enjoying it because they can arm themselves with suitable medication and have a treatment plan in place.

ESCAPE HAY FEVER HELL WITH NASACORT ALLERGY NASAL SPRAY

Get relief from an itchy, runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion. The unique thixotropic formula contains the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide3, which thickens when sprayed onto the nasal tissues and ‘stays where it’s sprayed’ to stop it from running down the nasal passage and throat, allowing effective relief from pollen allergies[v]. The prescription strength formula works to relieve symptoms throughout the day and night, and requires just one dose a day3. Leading hayfever expert, Dr Jean Emberlin, comments: “Hayfever is an allergic reaction to pollen and spores and it occurs when the body’s immune system mistakes these harmless airborne particles for something dangerous and launches a defence against them. “The most common nasal symptoms include sneezing and an itchy and runny nose, which can be really distracting and unpleasant for sufferers. It’s impossible to avoid allergens altogether, although you can limit your exposure to pollen and spores for example, by closing windows and avoiding places with flowering grasses, but getting the right treatment option to control symptoms, such as a nasal decongestant can be very effective.”

*Dr Jean Emberlin does not endorse any medicines Nasacort Allergy Nasal Spray costs €14.96 for 30 sprays, each delivering 55mg of triamcinolone acetonide, and is available from pharmacies across Ireland3. Suitable for those aged 18 years and over. The recommended starting dose is 2 sprays in each nostril once daily3. Once symptoms are controlled the maintenance dose is 1 spray in each nostril once daily3.Contains triamcinolone acetonide. THE BURNING

QUESTION

Sunburn can be common in Ireland during the summer season. Here are some guidelines when dealing with sufferers at the counter. Getting too much sun can be harmful at any age as it exposes the skin to ultra violet radiation (UV rays) that can damage it and even lead to skin cancer. This doesn’t mean people have to avoid the sun completely. Sun exposure is the best natural source of vitamin D and is important for general health. But while taking care when out in the sun is paramount, not everyone manages to go unscathed.

16 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

A

nyone presenting at the counter with sunburn should be advised to avoid direct sunlight by covering up the affected areas of skin and staying in the shade until the sunburn has healed. The skin can be cooled by sponging it with lukewarm water or by having a cool shower or bath. Sufferers need to drink plenty of fluids, which will also help with the cooling down process and will replace water that is lost through sweating. It will also help to prevent dehydration. Drinking alcohol is best avoided. Treatments Emollients such as moisturising creams and ointments applied directly to the skin can help. For mild sunburn, a moisturising lotion or aftersun cream is ideal. Moisturisers that contain aloe vera are also good, and calamine lotion can relieve any itching or soreness. Sunburn may also be treated by applying hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. This type of cream contains a corticosteroid and is rubbed directly onto the sunburned area of skin to reduce pain and inflammation. Hydrocortisone cream should not be used on certain parts of the body (face, genitals and broken/infected skin) or on children who are under two years old. The pharmacist should be consulted before suggesting hydrocortisone cream to treat sunburn. Painkillers can help to relieve the pain and reduce the inflammation that is caused by sunburn. Paracetamol can be used to treat pain and control fever, while ibuprofen is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can relieve pain, reduce inflammation and lower a high temperature. Severe cases of sunburn may require special burn creams and dressings. Again, the pharmacist should be consulted and will know if a GP or hospital visit is necessary. Be SunSmart The Irish Cancer Society’s advice to follow the SunSmart code is handy to know when dealing with customers during the summer months. The code says simply to: seek shade; cover up; wear sunglasses; check the UV Index to get the best protection possible; and wear sunscreen. Sunscreen alone is not enough protection against UV rays, but it’s crucial and needs to be used properly. Advise people to use a ‘broad spectrum’ one that protects against UVA and UVB and has an SPF minimum 30, tell them to apply to dry skin 20 minutes before going outside and be extra careful of those areas that do not get much sun as they will burn more easily. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours and always stored below 30°C.

PREENING

PROFITS Your pharmacy can benefit from both selling cosmetics and having a staff member on hand to advise and upsell. Selling cosmetics in your pharmacy can be a great way to boost profits. Research carried out in Australia two years ago found that when it came to the cosmetics market, pharmacies were the big winners in last decade. While there was a rise in online shopping for make-up since the previous year, the pharmacy sector had increased its reach from 15.1pc to 19.1pc over that time. Roy Morgan Research said that its data shows the real power players in the cosmetics sector were pharmacies, attracting more cosmetics customers than any other kind of retail store. The research also found that the beauty industry had changed drastically in the last 10 years as not only has there an increasing proliferation of niche brands specialising in everything from all-organic ingredients to specific products only, but social media has changed the way women interact with brands. Celebrities and other ‘influencers’ sharing images on the likes of Instagram has been an undeniable factor influencing younger women’s purchases. And then there’s the rise of internet retailers. But still, against this shifting backdrop, pharmacies remained the most popular place for Australian women to buy make-up, with nearly one in every five making their last cosmetics purchase at one.

Advising customers

18 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

If you are selling cosmetics in your pharmacy it’s a good idea to have a staff member on hand to give advice and guidance to customers. And before helping them, make sure you find out what their needs are, says Stephanie King, digital marketing executive at Chleo Enterprises, which distributes brands such as Artdeco and Misslyn. “So if it’s foundation for example, ask what kind of skin type they have, what level of coverage do they want, do they want a darker shade to use with tan. The more information you can find out, the better the foundation choice will be for the customer, hopefully leading to repurchases. “When finding the best foundation shade for a customer, always test on the face where possible. Many will test on the neck or hand but the best place to match is on the face. If possible, try three shades and always show the customer in natural daylight, to ensure the best match.” When it comes to lipstick, choose three shades and hold up to the customer’s face, continues King. “This can help decide if a cool or warm tone would suit the customer best and what shade of colour to choose. When a customer is purchasing a lipstick, always recommend a coordinating lipliner. This will give the lipstick a defined look and help the lipstick to last longer.” Finally, for eyeshadow, King suggests always recommending an eye primer to provide the perfect base. “Neutralising the eyelid colour, a primer will also give off the eyeshadow’s true colour and make the colour smudge proof.”

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS The Miscellaneous Bill came into effect earlier this year. The HR Company’s Linda Ward explains what this involves. Further to the Miscellaneous Bill that came into effect on 4 March 2019, it is important for all employers to note that this is brand new legislation that has not yet been tested. There are still differing interpretations between legal professionals in relation to the Act, which will only be determined through testing the law via the courts. There are some key points in relation to the Act I would like to bring to your attention briefly: ‘DAY FIVE STATEMENT’ • The ‘Day Five Statement’ is to be in writing and signed by the company in the initial five days. • Existing employees can request a ‘Day Five Statement’ but unless an existing employee requests this, it will not be necessary to update their contract. • Failure to issue an employee with the statement in the initial five days can lead to penalties up to and including criminal prosecution. ZERO HOURS AND MINIMUM PAYMENTS This will be most relevant to employers with part-time or a-typical workers: • If an employee is required to be available for work for a certain number of hours per week, and in situations where an employee is available and not called in to work, they are entitled to be compensated.

22 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

• •

If not required to work, the renumeration will be either 25pc of their contracted hours or 15 hours (whichever is less). If an employee works a certain number of hours, but this number is less than the 25pc or 15 hours (whichever is less), then they will be entitled to a ‘top up’ to that amount.

BANDED HOURS This will be most relevant to employers with part-time or a-typical workers: • The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act has retrospective effect, this means all employees with 12 months service can request banded hours from 4 March 2019. • All requests for banded hours must be placed in writing. If a request is not forthcoming from an employee there is no requirement to place them on banded hours. • An employee must be placed on the relevant banded hours within four weeks of their request. • A letter of confirmation of their banded hours is sufficient, a contract amendment is not necessary. If you’d like some help with the above, why not book a complimentary employment law review and we will provide you with the relevant information. Contact our business development manager Linda Ward on tel: 01 2911877 or email: linda.ward@thehrcompany.ie.

BOOST YOUR BUSINESS WITH AN ONLINE PRESENCE Your pharmacy’s retail marketing strategy will work even better with an online presence, explains Clive Hooper, social media marketing expert. Any good marketing strategy involves time and money, and to reach a mass market, any marketing plan should involve mass media to reach all facets and audiences demographically. But did you know that online marketing can function with any budget or no budget? So while traditional marketing forms are more important than ever, you can complement them with digital ones and increase your overall business profile. Here are some of the benefits.

users’ activity and find out if they interact with your website, the length of time on a page and whether or not they commit to the product/service that you’re offering. If a particular Facebook ad gets a great deal of interaction and click-throughs, but no conversions and time on the page is minimal, you will need to consider changing your targeting elements.

1 Cost-effective

Online marketing enables you to instantly spread your news, whether you’ve won an award, you’re doing something special within your industry or you’ve got an innovative product.

Advertising on social networks and Google can often be a low-cost option. There are techniques (for example pay-per-click) where you simply pay money for every person that clicks right through to your site, or sponsored posts, where you can place content on other websites for a small fee, hoping that individuals will click on your website.

2 Targeted Marketing your business digitally means that you’ll be able to select who sees the advertisement, ensuring that it’s only seen by people who are genuinely interested. There are numerous online marketing tools and alternatives on social platforms such as Facebook that enable you to choose the gender, relationship status and geographical locations of your potential market. 3 Data analysis It is easy to monitor which internet marketing methods are functioning effectively. With programmes like Google Analytics and Facebook Analytics, it is possible to observe 24 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

5 Generate organic traffic Using relevant keywords that assist in describing your business as well as your product/service should help generate increased traffic straight from search engines like Google. Using strategic SEO may help you go up the rankings while increasing website traffic. A business blog is normally the area to communicate with customers as well as your potential customers. Customers often do a search for ‘longtail’ terms for example ‘how do I’ and ‘what happens if’, therefore it might be a good idea to resolve these questions as part of your business blog. MORALE IN THE WORKPLACE Wondering how to boost staff morale in your business? Beauty business expert Liz McKeon gives her tips. Poor morale undermines the commitment of employees, will detract from the service they offer and can alienate the customers. It can arise for many reasons, such as a personality clash, poor management, lack of job satisfaction, financial insecurity, lack of job security or the absence of leadership – all of which may result in a high stress environment and this is the last thing you want your customers to experience. Poor morale can be all encompassing, after a while it is difficult to know how to find its source, and thus how to reverse it. What may start just as individual apathy can deteriorate into a generalised infectious problem that spreads throughout the entire business. The good news is that poor morale is reversible, but you must deal with the cause, not the symptoms. The first step is to assess the feelings and opinions of your team. It is important to identify people’s expectations, their ways and benefits, how the internal communication system is working and whether your management style is effective. Managers can do so much to improve morale by getting to know the team, valuing staff for their particular skills, passions and knowledge and, most importantly, helping the team members to develop their potential. Salary, holidays and perks are important, but never forget the importance of job satisfaction. Here are a few tips on how to maintain and boost staff morale in your business.

26 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

1. Always greet people by their name, letting them know that you know and value their contributions to the company.

2. Make your expectations and goals for the company clear and communicate directly, clearly and regularly.

3. Create an open and honest work

environment. Give feedback and listen to the concerns of your employees.

4. Provide opportunities to grow and learn,

letting your employees know there is room for advancement in your business. Tap into their passion and allow them to focus their time and energy on exciting projects they can enjoy.

5. Recognise and reward good work.

Monetary bonuses are always nice, but recognition of a job well done goes a long way to creating good will and loyalty. By creating an environment of open, constructive feedback, staff will feel inclined to co-operate with you as you drive your business forward. Vitamins and supplements

VAT ON FOOD SUPPLEMENTS Exposure on past VAT liabilities runs into the tens of millions, according to CKH Fiscal Services.

The Revenue Commissioners released guidance on 27 December 2018 to apply VAT to all food supplements from 1 March 2019. After an industry campaign by health stores and certain traders, this decision was deferred until 1 November 2019 to allow the Minister of Finance time to legislate for the application of VAT on such products. What many in the industry are not aware of are the consequences of Revenue’s narrative on food supplements. Since 2016, Revenue has restricted the 0pc VAT rate to basic vitamins, minerals and fish oils, and only where those products carry no health claims on the packaging. Revenue has repeatedly said in their media publications, responses to traders and in the new guidance that the 0pc VAT rate only applies to vitamins, minerals and fish oils. This narrative has been repeated in the Dáil by the Minister and in private letters to traders. Almost every vitamin and mineral product will have the EFSA authorised health claims printed on the packaging. Therefore, Revenue effectively says that VAT at 23pc applies to every food supplement on the market and they maintain that this was always the case. This has serious consequences for every manufacturer, distributor and retailer of food supplements. Revenue can go back four years and raise assessments for food supplements sold

38 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

at the 0pc VAT rate and has done so in a number of cases, even where traders were selling vitamin products with health claims on the packaging. There are at least two tax appeal cases lodged challenging VAT assessments raised against ordinary food supplements of the type Revenue previously allowed at 0pc VAT. The combined amount of VAT in these two cases is over €1m. These cases relate to medium-sized traders and their sales of food supplements would be insignificant in comparison to the larger pharmacy distributors and chains. If you sell food supplements, you have a VAT liability on your food supplement sales dating back over the past four years. It is time for all traders in the industry to come together and challenge Revenue. The food supplement industry is estimated at €60m per annum in Ireland, giving rise to a VAT exposure for the industry of €45m – an amount sure to hit profits and put many smaller traders out of business. For more information, contact Phil Costigan of the Irish Health Trade Association on tel: 065 684 8911 or Ciaran Hurley of CKH Fiscal Services on tel: 01 860 0444.

HAVING A DIGITAL PHOTO SERVICE IN-STORE IS AN IDEAL AND FLEXIBLE WAY TO INCREASE FOOTFALL AND BOOST PROFITS. In a world of digital consumption where we do just about everything online, there are still some things that will never be the same just on screen. One of these is photographs. They remain among our most treasured possessions, with many people saying that in the event of a fire they would opt to save the family album over other material possessions. Therefore, having a digital photo service in your pharmacy is a great way of making sure your profits go up. Between printing entire albums from their recent weekend away, to printing a couple of recently taken shots on impulse, people will always want hard copies of their moments in time.

MCLERNONS OBJECTIVE FOR RECYCLED PACKAGING 2019 McLernons is leading the way in our strategy to use sustainable-sourced materials and recycled packaging in all of our paper based packaging. We are fully committed to using recycled packaging as part of our active contribution to reduce packaging waste and establish a circular economy for packaging. Together with our suppliers and partners from across the packaging industry, we can help to develop practical solutions that result in a positive environmental impact. Our aim is to make it easier for our customers to recycle packaging and to support and improve recycling rates. This year 50pc of our gift wrapping paper is made from recycled paper. We have in stock various shapes and sizes of corrugated cardboard hamper boxes which are made from fully recycled paper. Our carrier bags are already made from recycled paper. Changing consumer lifestyle, the rise in the retail sector and increased consumer preference for eco-friendly stamped products are favouring the demand for recycled packaging. Along with our paper-based packaging McLernons supplies Earth-to-Earth Fully Degradable Plastic Sacks for use in your office and in your home. These sacks have many obvious benefits to the environment over the use of regular plastic. They degrade harmlessly to water, carbon dioxide and biomass, leaving no harmful residues.
