Artist Shane O’Malley with Pierre-Alain Delley, Roche in Ireland; Brian O’Mahony, Irish Haemophilia Society; and John Stack and his sons Oisin and Fionn who live with haemophilia

STREET ART UNVEILED TO MARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF IRISH HAEMOPHILIA SOCIETY A specially-commissioned street artwork was unveiled on Macken Street, Dublin 2 recently to mark the 50th anniversary of the Irish Haemophilia Society. The street art reflects the personal experience of patients and nurses from St James’s Hospital affected by haemophilia, which is a lifelong blood disorder. It represents connections between the haemophilia community, moving towards a brighter future and completing the domino effect of the blood clotting process. The visual, commissioned by the Irish Haemophilia Society in partnership with Roche, was developed by artist Shane O’Malley. The artwork is also now displayed as a canvas at St James’s Hospital in recognition of those it represents. “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we can

reflect on the tremendous improvements in haemophilia treatment in recent years. We now have a purpose built National Coagulation Centre in St James’s Hospital, a state of the art in-patient unit and an impressive clinical trial unit which has assisted us by having the facilities to carry out and access clinical trials for new therapies, which in turn, helps Ireland to remain at the forefront of haemophilia treatment innovation,” said Brian O’Mahony, chief executive, Irish Haemophilia Society. General manager of Roche in Ireland PierreAlain Delley added: “Haemophilia patients in Ireland can access the very best care available. This is due to the unceasing efforts of the Irish Haemophilia Society who have been relentless in keeping Ireland at the forefront of haemophilia treatment over 50 years.”

FORCES JOIN TO BRING MEDEX TO DUBLIN SOUTH

Dr Emmet Byrne, Patrick Ennis from Whitebrook, Prof Sean Kennelly and Michael Mullins from Clondalkin

Tallaght University Hospital, South Dublin County Council and DCU MedEx have come together to bring medically supervised exercise classes and educational workshops to south Dublin for the first time. MedEx has been operating in DCU for the past 10 years and during that time it has grown to become one of the largest centres of its kind in Europe, hosting over 700 participant visits every week. The community-based chronic illness rehabilitation programme will offer structured and supervised exercise classes to enable people with a diverse range of illnesses to exercise in a safe environment in order to maintain or gain fitness during or after treatment. There will be a specific focus on creating programmes for patients with mental illness and memory complaints in Tallaght as a recently completed three-year HSE funded evaluation of MedEx demonstrated the positive effects exercise had on patients’ psychological wellness and cognition. “MedEx represents a form of social prescribing, where GPs, consultants nurses and other

primary care professionals can refer people to local, non-clinical services that will contribute to their overall happiness and recovery,” said Prof Sean Kennelly, consultant physician in geriatric and stroke medicine in Tallaght University Hospital. “Structured and supervised exercise classes have been proven to promote psychological wellness and improve cognition. The MedEx programme will be a really positive service for the entire south Dublin community and we are looking forward to working with patients who are suffering from chronic and serious illnesses such as memory complaints and mental illness who will particularly benefit.” Local GP and former Leinster Rugby player Dr Emmett Byrne added: “MedEx will be a huge benefit to patients in the local community. Battling a chronic or serious illness can be very isolating so it is great that MedEx will bring people together for structured and supervised activity that will not only benefit them physically but also mentally.”

IPR | INDUSTRY NEWS RISE IN NUMBER GETTING FLU JAB IN PHARMACIES

Ger Brennan, MSD and Bríd O’Connell, CEO of Guaranteed Irish

GUARANTEED IRISH LAUNCH ‘PHARMACEUTICAL AND HEALTHCARE MONTH’ Guaranteed Irish has announced that ‘Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Month’ will take place in October, highlighting the pivotal role that this sector plays in Ireland’s economy and calling for Ireland to be at the forefront of its European peers in terms of early access to new medicines. Guaranteed Irish is currently working closely with their members in the pharmaceutical industry to develop a submission paper that will be presented to Government in October. This paper will outline the support required to ensure the pharmaceutical sector remains in robust health in Ireland, with a particular focus on access to new medicines and overcoming existing barriers to continual innovation and R&D. A range of events to mark ‘Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Month’ will take place during the month of October, including a round-table discussion with key political representatives. With each of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies represented in Ireland, Guaranteed Irish will be asking the Government to work in conjunction with them to establish the country as a ‘practice leader’ in this field.

“The Irish pharmaceutical sector is thriving, with the world’s top 10 pharmaceuticals based here. We are the seventh largest exporter of medicinal and pharmaceutical products in the world and the sector continues to go from strength to strength, providing high tech, exciting career opportunities and contributing significantly to local communities across Ireland,” said Brid O’Connell, CEO, Guaranteed Irish. “It is crucial that this contribution is recognised by the Irish Government. Patients are at the very heart of this industry and we are delighted to be working with MSD Ireland and our other members in this field to highlight the opportunity that Ireland has to be at the forefront of Europe in ensuring faster access for patients to new medicines.” Guaranteed Irish is a not-forprofit business membership organisation championing homegrown and international businesses in Ireland. Currently, the 300+ members of Guaranteed Irish employ nearly 50,000 people in Ireland, generating a turnover of €11bn.

The number of people getting the flu vaccine from their local pharmacy has risen by 46pc, according to new figures from the HSE for the 2017/2018 flu season. Every year between 200 and 500 people die from the illness. These figures show that 115,095 people got their vaccine from the their community pharmacist, compared to 78,935 the year before. The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has welcomed the rise, noting that despite this increase, pharmacy vaccination has not taken patients away from more traditional vaccine providers. In fact, since pharmacists started offering flu vaccinations in 2011, GP flu vaccinations have increased by 8pc and HSE vaccinations by 140pc. People in at-risk categories are advised to get vaccinated, and those in at-risk groups who have a medical card can get vaccinated free of charge at their local pharmacy. At-risk groups include people aged 65 and older, pregnant women, nursing home residents and healthcare workers. “The work undertaken by pharmacists delivers significant benefits to both patients and the State, by taking pressure off other parts of the healthcare system, including GPs and hospitals, allowing them to focus on patients with more complex conditions who require medical intervention,” said IPU president Daragh Connolly.

APP LAUNCHED THAT TRACKS EMOTIONS AND SIGNPOSTS SUPPORT FOR WOMEN WITH METASTATIC BREAST CANCER An app called ‘EmotionSpace’ has been developed to help women with metastatic breast cancer to track how they are feeling and request and receive emotional support from family, friends and other people with the disease. Research shows that women living with metastatic breast cancer experience social isolation and feelings of reduced selfworth. Patient support groups Europa Donna Ireland, the Irish Cancer Society and the Marie Keating Foundation have partnered with the EmotionSpace app to increase awareness of the support that is available to people living with metastatic breast cancer, which could help address the negative feelings associated with the disease. The combination of the immediacy of online emotional support with face-to-face initiatives organised by patient groups, will mean people living with the terminal disease are always connected to a support network. The app was designed in consultation with

patients and was supported by Pfizer. “The Irish Cancer Society has provided a safe, supportive environment for people living with secondary cancer for many years, through its Living Life Group. Through the face-toface support that the Living Life programme provides, we have learned about the emotional and mental toll that a metastatic cancer diagnosis places on an individual, their family and their friends,” said Naomi Fitzgibbon, cancer information services manager, Irish Cancer Society. “We are proud to have been part of the development of the EmotionSpace app and that it has been designed in consultation with patients to provide a secure space to express feelings and seek support in real-time. The Irish Cancer Society will be using it to signpost people living with metastatic breast cancer to our free support groups around the country.”

“We have seen a lot of change in the retail space over the last 20 years and Pulse Accessories has evolved to keep pace with these changes. One thing for certain is that we will see further change in the years ahead, this challenge really excites us here and we are presently embarking on a new digital strategy designed to improve our customer experience and offer our partners a value proposition that meets their ever evolving needs.”

The Pulse Accessories story began back in 1998 when the brand was first launched into the Irish market. As a 100pc Irish-owned company, Pulse Accessories was developed with a vision of making affordable, globally sourced on-trend accessories available to Irish women. Initially the collection consisted of costume jewellery and hair accessories, however over the years the range has grown substantially with the buying team currently sourcing collections of costume jewellery, hair accessories, personal care and beauty accessories, along with handbags, scarves, wallets, watches, gifts and cosmetics from Europe, the US and Asia.

Pulse Accessories still prides itself on value and along with this it also seeks to deliver exceptional customer service by placing the customer at the heart of the business.

“We have had the pleasure of working with some of Ireland’s leading pharmacy groups and independents over the years and without their support we would not have been able to make Pulse Accessories the brand it is today. We are grateful to have the chance to continue to work with our pharmacy partners and are constantly looking at ways to add value to their businesses,” says managing director David Ruane.

You can check out all Pulse Accessories has to offer by visiting them at this year’s Cosmetic Association Trade Show in the RDS on 20-22 May where they will be showcasing their latest collections.

FEVER PITCH It’s that time of year again when you are going to see more customers presenting with those dreaded hay fever symptoms. Usually occurring in spring and summer, hay fever is a type of allergic rhinitis caused by pollen or spores. Allergic rhinitis is a condition where an allergen makes the inside of the nose inflamed or swollen. Hay fever affects the nose, sinuses, throat and eyes, and causes sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes. It’s a common condition that is estimated to affect around 20pc of people, it cannot be cured completely, but there are a number of treatments available to relieve the symptoms. These include:

Oral corticosteroids – if a person’s hay fever symptoms are so severe that they impair quality of life, a GP may prescribe a course of oral corticosteroids. Injections – long-acting steroid injections have been used for treatment of hay fever, but they are not recommended as routine management due to the risks of serious side effects and should only be used in exceptional circumstances.

Antihistamine tablets or nasal sprays – they treat hay fever by blocking the action of the chemical histamine, which the body releases when it thinks it is under attack from an allergen. This prevents the symptoms of the allergic reaction from occurring.

Nasal decongestants – these reduce the swelling of the blood vessels in the nose. A pharmacist can advise you on the different products to choose from as many are available. They should not be used for longer than seven days.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays and drops – they are used to treat hay fever because they have an anti-inflammatory effect. When the pollen triggers your allergic reaction, the inside of your nose becomes inflamed. Corticosteroids can reduce this inflammation and prevent the symptoms of hay fever. A GP may prescribe corticosteroid nasal sprays or drops instead of antihistamines if a person has persistent hay fever, the main symptom is a blocked nose or if the person is pregnant or breastfeeding.

Eye drops – they are available OTC to treat the hay fever symptoms that affect the eyes, such as redness, itchiness and watering (allergic conjunctivitis). These drops contain antihistamine to reduce the inflammation in the eyes, which will relieve the symptoms.

18 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

AT THE COUNTER | IPR Alternative therapies – some such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal remedies claim to relieve or prevent hay fever symptoms. However, the lack of evidence supporting their effectiveness means that more research is needed before they can be recommended. The best way to control most allergies is to avoid the trigger substance. However, it

is very difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer months when you want to spend more time outdoors.

Always remember to tell customers buying OTC medicines to read the manufacturer's instruction. Pregnant or breastfeeding women need to check with their GP before using OTC medicines to find out which ones are recommended.

NASACORT ALLERGY NASAL SPRAY AVAILABLE TO PHARMACIES IN IRELAND Nasacort Allergy Nasal Spray is available to buy direct from pharmacies for the first time in Ireland, without the need for a prescription. With up to one in five Irish citizens suffering with hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), many will be pleased to hear that once established on the product they can get 24-hour relief from irritating symptoms, such as an itchy and runny nose, without having to wait to see their doctor. Nasacort Allergy Nasal Spray has a strong prescription heritage and has been prescribed by doctors for many years to help manage hay fever. The unique thixotropic formula contains the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide, which thickens when sprayed onto the nasal tissues and ‘stays where it’s sprayed’ to stop it from running down the nasal passage and throat, allowing effective relief from seasonal allergies. The scentfree and alcohol-free spray requires just one dose a day and allows non-drowsy relief from hay fever symptoms, without an odour or harsh taste. “Nasacort Allergy Nasal Spray has been a prescription only product in Ireland for a number

of years, so we are very excited that it will now be available direct from pharmacies," said a Sanofi spokesperson. “Nasacort’s thixotropic action and preferred taste should see it fit strongly in to the market and with intranasal corticosteroids offering superior relief in allergic rhinitis, it presents a great opportunity for pharmacists. We will be supporting pharmacists with training and point of sale materials to ensure they have a good knowledge on the product benefits and feel confident in recommending the appropriate allergy treatment option during the hay fever season.” Nasacort Allergy Nasal Spray costs €14.96 for 30 sprays, each delivering 55mg of triamcinolone acetonide and is available from pharmacies across Ireland. Suitable for those aged 18 years and over. The recommended starting dose is two sprays in each nostril once daily. Once symptoms are controlled the maintenance dose is one spray in each nostril once daily. Contains triamcinolone acetonide. Always read the label.

CLOSE CONTACT! HEAD LICE

While head lice are associated with the back to school season, the warmer summer months actually see an increase of infestations. The frequency of head lice increases in the warm months, with the likely cause of infestations being that children play together more in the warmer weather and therefore transmit lice from head to head. With less homework and fewer after-school obligations, children have more time to be together, be this in camps, playgrounds or sleepovers. So be prepared for a lot of queries at the counter over the summer from concerned parents trying to deal with head lice outbreaks in their kids. Wet-combing After a head lice infestation has been confirmed, the lice can be treated at home by using a wet comb or medicated lotions. Make sure to tell customers that neither treatment method will protect against re-infestation if head-to-head contact is made with someone with head lice during the treatment period. The wet-combing method involves removing the head lice by systematically combing the hair using a special fine-toothed comb and no medicated products are necessary for wet combing. This can be beneficial because head lice are becoming more resistant to the insecticides that are commonly used to remove them. The success of the wet-combing method depends on adopting a painstaking approach that involves regular and thorough combing. Lotions and sprays Medicated lotion or spray is an alternative method for treating head lice and you can recommend the over-the-counter lotions or sprays you have in your pharmacy to your customers. Medicated treatments should only be used if a living (moving) head louse is found. Crème rinses and shampoos are not thought to be effective and are therefore not recom-

20 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

mended. The instructions that come with the product should be followed. The normal advice is to treat once, then repeat after seven days. Some medicated products also supply a comb for removing dead lice and eggs. Some medicated products may be capable of killing eggs as well as lice, although there is no certainty of this. People can check for baby lice hatching from eggs three to five days after using a product, and again 10 to12 days afterwards. A minimum of two applications of lotion are needed to kill the lice over the hatching period because the lotions do not always kill louse eggs. If the lice appear to be unaffected by the product (some lice may have developed resistance to a particular insecticide) or if the problem persists, seek advice from your school nurse, health visitor, pharmacist or GP. People should always seek advice from a healthcare professional before using medicated head lice lotions on the following groups: young babies (under six months old); pregnant women; and people with asthma or allergies.

BABY CARE IN THE SUN With the summer months upon us, be prepared to advise any parents looking for guidance on how to protect their babies in the sun. A baby’s skin is no match for the sun. Indeed until an infant reaches the age of three, they do not have a fully developed skin defence system, which leaves them highly vulnerable to the sun’s rays. With their delicate skin, it’s vital to protect it against the sun’s harmful rays.

made from close-woven material that does not allow sunlight through. Sun protection The sun protection for a baby should offer SPF 50+ and UVA protection combined with protection of the cutaneous barrier to preserve the skin’s natural defences and prevent any cell damage that could result from exposure to the sun. It should offer a guarantee of high tolerance – the formula should be hypoallergenic, alcohol-free, paraben-free and dermatologically tested. Babies should not be exposed to direct sunlight and sunscreen should be applied generously and regularly with particular focus on sensitive areas that receive extra exposure such as forehead, cheekbones, nose and lips. It should be reapplied every two hours and also after they’ve been in the water. The hours between 11am and 4pm and particularly dangerous so babies should be kept away from exposure during this time. They should be kept in the shade when the sunshine is intense and never be left naked or in a swimsuit in the sunlight. Don’t forget either about babies’ eyes. Sunglasses are a must with wrap-around ones being the best option. Make sure they give as close to 100pc UV protection as possible and should be worn from as early an age as possible.

According to the National Cancer Control Programme, getting a painful sunburn in childhood can double the risk of developing skin cancer in later life, particularly melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Parents should always be advised to take care whether in Ireland or abroad – UV damage from Irish weather is just as harmful as that from warmer climates. Care needs to be taken on cloudy days too – up to 90pc of UV rays can pass through light cloud. Babies under six months should be kept in the shade and dressed in loose-fitting outfits with long sleeves and long shorts. They should be

Finally, prevention is key for this time of the year. Summer and sunshine should mean fun without spoilers so when the weather is hot, along with minding the skin and eyes, make sure both adults and babies are taking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

PHARMACISTS CALL FOR EASIER ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) National Conference took place on 29 April. The IPU has formally adopted a policy calling on the Government to improve access to contraception for women by making it available from a community pharmacy without prescription and without charge, regardless of eligibility. A motion on the topic was passed at the organisation’s recent AGM and the IPU will actively advocate for Government to implement this. The IPU recently welcomed the Minister for Health’s proposal to introduce free contraceptive care and provided his department with a detailed submission on how this could be achieved. “We know from HSE research that almost half of women would prefer to access contraception through their pharmacy. Many pharmacists have been surprised at the strong support for this plan from their female patients and customers,” said IPU president Daragh Connolly. “The oral contraceptive pill is one of the safest and well-studied medicines available. Pharmacists would undergo appropriate training on the selection and supply of the most appropriate contraception and therefore there is simply no clinical cause for concern. Providing convenient and affordable access to birth control should be a public health priority. Providing women with this choice will make it easier and more convenient to get contraception safely, meaning more women will use it, which should result in reduced rates of unintended pregnancy.”

22 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

Meanwhile pharmacists have also called on the Department of Health to improve patient care and address serious problems in health service capacity by expanding the range of healthcare services pharmacies can offer. The call was made at the AGM, at which a motion was passed to introduce properly resourced pharmacy-based services. Pharmacists declared at the conference that they are ready, willing and more than capable of playing a greater role by expanding the services they provide and alleviating pressure on other areas in the health service. “The focus of the healthcare system must be towards the creation of a patient-focused health service delivered at the lowest level of complexity and as close to people’s homes as possible,” noted Connolly. “Pharmacists play a vital role in ensuring patient safety and wellbeing, and are available and willing to engage on a change agenda which involves expanding the role of the pharmacist and enhancing pharmacy services for the betterment of the healthcare system.”

It’s not about being pushy. Selling is a word that is dreaded and feared – even though we all know we need to ‘sell’ products, many of us feel anxious and fearful about actually doing so. To shift out of fear and into excitement about selling: 1. Know the source of your fear is an important part of overcoming your fear of selling. For example, fear can come from worrying about not being liked or being perceived as pushy, struggling with the idea of being rejected or lack of confidence in the product. 2. Take action to address the source of your fear. For example, improve your product knowledge, find a way to bounce back after rejection, which becomes a lot easier if you don’t take the ‘no’ personally. 3. Find enthusiasm for what you offer. Make a list of all the wonderful benefits and successful outcomes of past customers. 4. Shift your perspective. Think of yourself as ‘sharing information’ or ‘showing benefits’ rather than trying to convince somebody to buy. 5. Start small when you want to overcome your fear of selling. The most successful sales people are those who interact with customers in an authentic, passionate way, so find a way that feels comfortable with you. 6. Keep track of your successes. Sometimes we forget just how much we do right. By keeping note of this daily your confidence will begin to improve. 7. Have fun with it. Rather than approaching

24 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

selling from a ‘have to’ perspective, find a fun and interesting way to share your knowledge and passion. 8. Stay focused on your desired outcome. Most people take actions and reach their goals because they stay focused on the benefits of doing so. Sometimes, reminding yourself what you want and why you’re doing this can help you to keep going. 9. Detach from the outcome. Very often we get really attached to ‘making the sale’ or having the situation turn out a certain way. Instead, staying focused on your effort – doing a great job – the outcome turns out better than you might ever have imagined. 10. Keep practising. Like any other skill, “selling” gets easier the more you do it. Pushiness is in the eye of the beholder. Generosity requires that we be aware of how the other person, the customer, is feeling about the forward motion we’re trying to make. Liz McKeon is a business coach and trainer in the pharmacy retail and beauty industry.

THE MAGIC OF LIFE INSURANCE What financial advisors do in arranging life insurance policies is crucial, explains Ted Dwyer. Nobody likes to spend too much time thinking about life insurance because we don’t like to think that we will die too early. However, in the real world, sometimes people do die before their time and often their family, and perhaps their business, can be left in severe financial difficulty. Mostly banks will lend to a business because they have confidence in the business owner’s ability to repay the loan. This perception can change on the death of the key person to the business. Money paid out from a life insurance policy cannot replace the person who dies but it can replace some of the money they would have earned. During my career working as a financial advisor, a totally new form of insurance policy was created. This new insurance cover came about as a result of people being diagnosed with very serious illnesses, being kept alive by wonderful and innovative medical procedures but perhaps running out of money because of their illness and their inability to work as a result of their illness. In many cases they had life insurance cover in place but this cover was not being paid out because they were still alive. And so, as a result of these type of situations, a new type of insurance policy, which paid out on the diagnosis of a serious illness like cancer or heart attack or stroke, was designed. Over the years, the importance of both types of cover was brought home to me and I have overseen the payment of many life insurance

26 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

and serious illness claims. When I was diagnosed with cancer, and not a bit sure of what the outcome of the treatment would be, it was very comforting to have the money from the insurance cover agreed upon and paid. The importance of what we do as financial advisors in arranging life insurance cover was also brought home to me very clearly one day many years ago. I was going to the funeral of a client who died when he was very young. This man was very well known and much loved by everyone. As I was walking to the service I was crossing the River Lee I thought about our friendship and then about the life cover that I had arranged for him. I thought about the trust and responsibility he had placed in me, as his family’s financial well-being was in my hands. Having said that, he was the one who made the decision to do what I advised and he was the one who had to pay the cost every month for the life insurance cover. He had everything in place and his widow and young children were well provided for and there were no loans or other financial matters outstanding. And so, in this case, all was well thanks to the magic of that life insurance policy, which paid out a sum of money, new money, exactly at the time it was needed.

Ted Dwyer is the founder director of City Life and a director of City Life Galway. He is a certified financial planner and, in recent years, set up Ted Dwyer Family Business as a family business succession consultant.

CHRISTMAS

THE CHRISTMAS TRADE EVENT OF THE YEAR, A MUST VISIT FOR IRELAND’S PHARMACY MARKET.

Cosmetic & Gift Trade Fair

THE COSMETIC ASSOCIATION

The Cosmetic Association was formed almost 30 years ago to offer the pharmacy sector a one-stop shop for their Christmas trade. As the years went by, exhibitors took the opportunity of introducing new brands at the Cosmetic Association Trade Fair and this was a welcome addition. For buyers to see a full stand of cosmetics, or a display of perfumes, or a range of jewelry or a display of wrapping/bags, in one day, and in one place, is a huge benefit. In 2007 we moved from the Burlington Hotel in Dublin to the Main Hall in the RDS, Ballsbridge from where we are working ever since. We extended into Hall 3 beside the Main Hall five years ago and we are still growing in size, with variety of exhibitors. Ireland is a small country, but we have as much choice now as most European cities and many US cities too. We have a significant number of new exhibitors this year and are very excited with the range of products that will be available to our buyers. The event will be the most colourful to date and we hope you will all enjoy your visit. Remember, we have free parking within the RDS grounds and you receive a voucher for coffee and a pastry when you register. You are asked to enter the RDS through the main gates on Merrion Road.

2018

Our event is scheduled for 20, 21 and 22 May 2018, in the Main Hall and Hall 3 in the RDS, Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, and we will be delighted to see you all there.

Registration is available at the door. Buyers will receive a voucher for tea/coffee and a pastry to get them started, and a full brochure with floor plan and space to make notes as they go.

The Main Hall, RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin

We look forward to welcoming you.

ARE YOU GDPR READY? When it comes to data protection, 25 May is D-Day, so make sure you know what’s involved.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force on 25 May 2018, strengthening the rights of individuals and increasing the obligations on organistaions. As the use and sharing of data is critical to the provision of high quality healthcare, and the security of this information is hugely important, the GDPR poses a unique challenge for healthcare professionals, including pharmacists.

The updated GDPR regulation applies to any company who handle personal data. Any information about an individual for example email address, credit card details, first/last name, address etc is classed as personal data. Companies found to be in breach of data compliance regulations face huge penalties. From the handling and processing of prescriptions, to transactions on the till, all team members in community

pharmacy deal with personal data on a daily basis. According to the results of a recent study commissioned by Data Solutions, 80pc of data breaches are caused by employees. With this in mind, a lack of awareness among your team could be the biggest threat to your pharmacy.

So do you think you are GDPR ready? It’s worth noting that a recent survey found that one in five small businesses do not have a plan in place to deal with GDPR. The Small Firm’s Association’s (SFA) GDPR Readiness Survey found that 39pc of respondents have made

30 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

some preparations for GDPR and an additional 45pc have started to prepare. No company identified themselves as 'GDPR ready' and 17pc said that they have no plan in place. “Small businesses know that GDPR is coming, with 89pc either very aware or having some awareness of the changes that will take effect on 25 May 2018. It is worrying that almost one in five small businesses do not yet have a plan in place in relation to GDPR,” said SFA director Sven Spollen-Behrens. The SFA has launched a guide called ‘Mind our business: Prepare for GDPR’. Meanwhile, the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) has launched a GDPR informative website www.GDPRandYou. ie with guidance to help individuals and organisations become more aware of their enhanced rights and responsibilities under the GDPR.

THE LOCAL TOUCH Minihan’s Chemist, established by Liam Minihan in 1955, is located at the corner of Oliver Plunkett St and Winthrop St in Cork, and has been serving the needs of the people for over 60 years. Today the business is operated by his nephew John Minihan and his wife Trish who took over the business in 1995. How important is being a ‘local pharmacy’ to your business and how do you approach community relations? In Cork, local is everything. We firmly believe that small independent traders best define the uniqueness of Cork across all sectors. Our customers are loyal and engaging and we place great value in personal contact, giving time to our customers and developing a relationship with them is what defines customer relations. Offering a personal service to local people and businesses is what ensures our pharmacy thrives. What do you think gives your pharmacy the competitive edge? I think our reputation for serving the local community for so many years in a friendly and compassionate way is what sets us aside. We are on first name terms with many of our regu-

34 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

lar customers and generations of families pass through Minihan’s. What purchasing trends do you expect to see for the coming year? We look at the two distinctive sides of our business, prescription and OTC products as well as cosmetics. The challenge of online shopping is ever present and we believe is best countered by a high level of personal service and consultation, which is not available on the internet. Skincare is overtaking make-up in sales because people are now acutely aware of the dangers of UVA UVB sun exposure. They are also more educated on active skincare, which is why cosmeceuticals and supplements will remain a big seller. Irish beauty brands have really come into their own in the last number of years and we are proud stockists of several of these brands.

IRISH PHARMACIST | IPR

Has your business faced any recent challenges? The pharmacy has not only had to deal with the recession but also faced draconian changes in its contract with the HSE regarding dispensing fees and drug payment schemes. As we slowly recover from the recession we have been recently challenged by the well-publicised city centre street closures as part of new traffic plan. This was tough on us, reducing our footfall by 27pc overnight. It also affected our ability to take afternoon deliveries. We campaigned hard to have this policy suspended and are hopeful of a more constructive and trader friendly implementation plan in the months ahead. Â What health concerns have been affecting your customers most in recent times? Outside of the routine OTC matters that are discussed daily there has been a noticeable increase in seeking information on the pros and cons of vaccines. We also notice a sharp increase in customers seeking information on dementia and health screening on diabetes and colon cancer.

Are there any economic issues that you think might affect your business in the coming months? The impact of Brexit will be challenging and I am not sure we are fully prepared for the new regime of what will be deemed imported goods. The impact on retail prices is still to be determined. The Government continue to seek savings on drug costs by targeting professional fees and drug repayment costs at pharmacy level as the easy option, which effectively challenges the viability of real community pharmacy. What are you hopes/plans for your pharmacy in 2018? To continue offering our customer the service level and approach that we have come to be known for. We hope an improved website and social media presence will result in more corporate sales on the cosmetic and perfume side. Ultimately we are open to moving with the times while maintaining the core values of our pharmacy.

Benefits of each active ingredient: • Whey protein: There are many uses for whey protein. Primarily it is used for muscle recovery. Because it helps to speed up recovery, people find that they put on muscle mass faster whey they take a whey protein supplement. Muscle mass is what makes someone lean, so it is important even if you are someone who does not want to bulk up. • Protein also takes longer for your body to digest than carbohydrates. This means that whey protein can make you feel fuller for longer. • But why whey and not eggs or meat? Whey is the undisputed king of proteins. Whey is absorbed very quickly, and is easily digestible (so no bloating). It is known as a complete protein (meaning it contains all 22 essential and non-essential amino acids). • Nutrisci also contains all three types of whey protein. Whey protein concentrate is the most basic form of Whey protein. Whey Protein Isolate has had much of the fat, lactose and other 'undesirables' taken out. Hydrolysed Whey (Whey Peptides) has been broken down further for even faster digestion.

gredients on banned list) and is manufactured in a drug free ISO 9001:2008 approved facility in Ireland. You can be assured there is nothing banned/unsafe in any NutriSci product.

Contraindications/precautions: Whey protein is safe for anyone to use, but as with all supplements, if in doubt, ask the pharmacist on duty. The only type of patient that should take care with whey protein is someone with diabetes, as whey protein naturally contains small amounts of sugar, although, it is not usually enough to cause issues with insulin levels.

Q. By just taking Whey protein I'll get ripped, right? A. No. Getting ripped/getting a six-pack requires a good diet and plenty of exercise. Only hard work will get you there, but Whey protein helps!

Commonly asked questions and answers: Q. Will whey protein will puff me out/make me flabby? A. No. Eating too much and not doing enough exercise will give you those undesirable appearances. Q. Will whey protein me bloated? A. No. Whey protein has minimal levels of lactose, so often people who might be sensitive to dairy find they can take it. The type of whey that’s also in the product allows your body to absorb the product instantly so it doesn’t sit on the stomach. Q. Is whey protein a steroid? A. No, steroids that are used to gain muscle are called anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are illegal. NutriSci is WADA approved (no in-

OTHER NOTES, GUIDELINES, TIPS: The two most important times to take Whey are post-workout/exercise and before bed. After a workout, your body is like a sponge, and will absorb any protein you give to it. Recovery rates will be much faster as your body can use the protein you've just given to it, rather than it having to break down muscle mass for amino acids. Whilst you are sleeping, you aren't eating anything. You have an eight hour gap where your body isn't getting any source of amino acids. If you take a serving of protein before bed, your body will not go into such a severe catabolic state, making for faster recovery and gains.

FORCE OF NATURE Menopausal sweats and flushes can occur during or after the menopause with no particular pattern. They may not occur immediately with the onset of other symptoms of menopause and may appear gradually. Hot flushes that accompany the menopause are usually caused by falling levels of the hormone oestrogen. This is a natural part of the menopausal process, but does not always happen smoothly and gradually enough to avoid symptoms such as flushes. Low oestrogen levels make it harder to control histamine, which can dilate blood vessels. A simple and traditional way of helping to deal with menopausal sweats is to use the well-known and much-loved herb sage.

A.Vogel Menoforce Sage Tablets is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the relief of menopausal hot flushes and excessive perspiration exclusively based on long-standing use. It is made with organically grown, freshly harvested sage with a one-a-day dosage. The benefits of taking a sage extract when suffering from hot flushes is that it is not oestrogenic and won’t disturb a woman’s progress through menopause, unlike HRT. A.Vogel Menopause Support is formulated with soy isoflavones and carefully selected botanical extracts for naturopathic support through all

stages of the menopause. It also provides magnesium, which contributes to the normal functioning of nervous system, a reduction in fatigue and contributes to normal muscle function. It is the ideal remedy to recommend to those suffering from symptoms associated with low oestrogen levels such as low energy, anxiety, low mood, mood swings, dryness, bloating and aches and pains. It gently stimulates oestrogen receptors and is suitable for use alongside thyroid medication. It should be taken on its own for those suffering from a variety of symptoms but hot flushes not being most prevalent. It can be taken with Menoforce if sweats/flushes are present in force.

A.Vogel Menoforce and A.Vogel Menopause Support are both available to order from Wholefoods on 01 6262315.

THE NATURAL MAKE-UP REVOLUTION IS HERE! Make-up trends for 2018 include fresh faces, perfected complexions and a real focus on a healthy glow, moving away from heavy countering and mask like foundations the no make-up look is hot right now! A good canvas and the right tools are key to creating a master piece! If your complexion doesn’t look good the rest of the makeup loses its impact. So, priming and preparation ahead of foundation application as well as application technique is important to get that flawless finish without looking too heavy and fake. Even Kim Kardashian famous for her extreme countering has pared it back and was spotted at Balenciaga fashion event sitting front row with no make-up! Across catwalks for Michael Kors, Vera Wang and many more the trend continues. It’s refreshing to find a trend that isn’t trying to change how we look but rather enhance our natural appearance and keeping it simple, fresh and natural. ARTDECO have truly embraced this latest trend with its beautiful Natural Make-up

Revolution Collection. The collection boosts some unique and exciting products including:

Instant Skin Perfector to make your skin appear naturally fresh and balanced. This gives a flawless, radiant complexion and a natural finish. Thanks to its creamy texture and special pigment finish, the product optimally adapts to your individual skin structure. Like an optical softener, it retouches irregularities and gently corrects the complexion. The creamy base contains microbeads with embedded colour pigments that will only burst and release the pigments on application. The encapsulated high-tech pigments optimally adapt to the skin tone and, through clever symbiosis with light-reflecting porcelain flower extract, give the complexion an irresistibly beautiful, natural appearance. Its balancing effect also makes

this product the perfect primer, making an even make-up application afterwards easy. Rocket leaves and seaweed extract nourish and protect the skin. The product lays on the skin and offers optimal wearing comfort throughout the day. The practical tube with its small opening means that the liquid can be precisely dispensed and easily applied. The Instant Skin Perfector is mineral-free and contains hyaluronic acid. Skin compatibility is dermatologically approved.

Luminous Skin Stick gives the skin a particularly soft glow. Pearlescent, iridescent pigments reflect the light and create an opalescent effect. A unique blend of waxes gives a particularly creamy texture, which can be easily applied and blended. The handy “to go” stick is versatile and ideal for a quick touch-up on the go. Use the stick to perfectly set the

PERFECT PITCH | IPR cheekbones, bridge of the nose and forehead. The rounded shape facilitates a precise application. The paraben and perfume-free Luminous Skin Stick can be used on its own or on top of make-up.

The Multi Stick for face and lips is a revolutionary product for creating a perfect, uncomplicated nude look. Its creamy texture makes the stick a true all-rounder. Use it as an eyeshadow, lipstick, highlighter blusher, bronzer, contouring stick, concealer or cover stick - thanks to its flexible coverage and optimal colour intensity, the Multi Stick can be applied to any part of the face. The texture can be perfectly blended and worked in, remaining comfortably weightless on the skin. Achieve a natural make-up look quickly and easily. This all-rounder is also ideal for touching up your make-up at any time. The handy stick shape is particularly practical and allows for an effortless and precise application. The packaging with screw top in a matte, metallic beige makes the Multi Stick an eye-catcher in your handbag. Top tip: Add powder over the colour applied to create a completely matte finish. Skin compatibility of the Multi Stick is dermatologically approved. Color Booster Lip Balm nourishes and embellishes your natural lip colour with a delicate pigmentation. The self-colouring pigments combine with the lips’ protective film and flatter the natural lip colour. Depending on the individual pH of the lips, the colour intensity varies. The lips look refreshed and radiant. Vegetable oil extracted from

seeds of the tropical ‘miracle tree’ forms a mechanical protective film against water-soluble pollutants and protects the lips from moisture loss. Nourishing apricot and peach kernel oil sustains the moisture content of the lips. The delicate spearmint aroma revives and refreshes. In addition to the classic ‘boosting pink’ option, two new shades of the Color Booster Lip Balm will make your lips irresistibly kissable.

All in One Eye Primer is a multi-functional eyeshadow primer and provides the ideal base for perfect eye makeup application. The texture is long-lasting and will increase the eyeshadow’s staying power. The true colour effect will not distort the eyeshadow colour. The primer gives the eyeshadow colour an intense radiance and makes it even stronger. A neutralising effect causes visual correction of eyelid irregularities. Redness and veins are perfectly concealed. For a natural look with a matte finish, the primer can also be used without eyeshadow. The All in One Eye Primer is smudge-proof. The

creamy texture makes applying eyeshadow easy. Vitamin E nourishes and protects the sensitive area around the eyes, while silica reflects light on the skin and makes the eyelids appear even and smooth. The shade ‘balance’ no. 1 is suitable for all skin tones. The oil and perfume-free All in One Eye Primer is clinically tested. Skin compatibility is dermatologically approved. Application: Apply a thin layer of eyeshadow to your eyelid and distribute evenly. For an extremely smooth and even application, use the Concealer & Camouflage Brush Premium Quality. Hint: Re-seal the product immediately after use to prevent it from drying out.

LOVE LIFTS US UP! The LoveLift brand is expanding its range for Autumn/Winter 2018 and Holly Carpenter cannot wait to share it. I have always had a love of jewellery and accessories. For as long as I can remember it’s been my favourite part of putting an outfit together. During my time working in the fashion industry, I have had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of incredible Irish designers and creatives. Working in such a creative industry fed my ambition to one day to start my own brand.

love

Aside from wanting to utilise my passion for design and create affordable wearable pieces, it was also hugely important to me that the collection had a meaningful message behind it. female empowerment across my social media channels, where I am lucky enough to reach a large audience of amazing Irish females. Back when I was at the concept stages of this collection it was paramount for me that these same uplifting messages that I share on social media was the basis of the message behind LoveLift. The name LoveLift came from my desire to give women an uplifting feeling when they wear a piece of jewellery that has a positive message behind it, reminding them to stay happy, feel good and uplifted. I have a tattoo on my wrist that I designed a few years ago of a hot air balloon with a love heart in the centre. It’s there to remind me to stay strong, positive and to rise above any negativity that life throws at me. I knew straight away that I wanted this personal tattoo to be the logo. The years that I have spent modelling and experiences I went through in my early 20s, such as competing in Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model and representing Ireland in Miss World, I learned about the intense self-doubt and pressures that young women go through. Because of this I always try to spread a positive message of self-love, body confidence and

The LoveLift brand consisting of necklaces and bangles with positive sentiments launched September 2017 and I could not be prouder. I have enjoyed meeting customers at LoveLift events and hearing their stories and discussing some of the pieces and how they came about. Earrings are the newest addition to the LoveLift brand and I decided to add these to the range due to so many people requesting them.
