EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION NOW AVAILABLE TO MEDICAL CARD HOLDERS FROM PHARMACISTS Medical card holders can now to get emergency contraception directly from their local community pharmacist. This follows the signing of the statutory instrument changing access to emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) for medical card holders by the Minister for Health Simon Harris TD . The move has been welcomed by the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU).

CLANWILLIAM PHARMACIST AWARDS TO TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER The people of Ireland have nominated pharmacists who go above and beyond for their patients in advance of the Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards, which will take place on 18 November in Dublin’s Mansion House. The winning pharmacist will be recognised in the company of peers, with over 300 representatives from all sectors of pharmacy, including pharmacists in hospital, community, industry and academic settings. The Patient Nominated Award, sponsored by the Irish Pharmacy Union, is one of 10 categories, including the Professional Excellence Award and the Young Pharmacist of the Year Award. “The Clanwilliam Pharmacists Awards 2017 will provide an opportunity to recognise the phenomenal work which takes place across all pharmacy sectors every day in Ireland. It’s important to dwell on the contribution of the pharmacy profession to healthcare in Ireland as a whole, and also to recognise the individuals and teams who are nominated in each category,” said Daragh Connolly, president of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU). “Another noteworthy aspect of the awards is the support they offer for the Pharmacy Benevolent Fund, which helps those who have been associated with pharmacy and who are now in need of assistance.” An adjudicating panel comprised of pharmacists from various branches of the profession will select three finalists for each category and a winner for each, which will be revealed on the night itself.

6 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

“We are delighted that, after many years of lobbying on this issue, women with medical cards who, up to now, had to go to their GP to get a prescription if they wished to get EHC on their medical card will be able to access it directly from their community pharmacy free of charge,” said IPU president and community pharmacist Daragh Connolly. “Emergency contraception is time-sensitive. Its effectiveness diminishes between the time of unprotected sex and the time of taking it, making it crucial that all women are able to access it readily when necessary. The convenience and accessibility offered by community pharmacies is therefore hugely valuable.” Pharmacists have been providing emergency contraception without prescription to private patients since 2011.

NEW HEALTHWISE PHARMACY OPENS IN GALWAY A Healthwise Pharmacy has opened in Oranmore in Galway next to Arlington House Medical Centre. Pharmacist Keith McConville offers free consultation on any query relating to medicines or on general healthcare, with the support of his team. PROGRAMME TO DELIVER HEALTHCARE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN RURAL AREAS A new programme to support women back into the workplace, particularly in the area of healthcare, has been launched by Ballyhoura Development in partnership with SECAD. Funded under the Programme for Equality Learning and Inclusion, the programme will particularly target women living in rural areas in Limerick and Cork. “This programme has been developed to support women who want to return to work, but have been detached from the labour market or maybe with lower levels of formal education or skills have been unable to enter the labour market,” said Padraig Casey, chief executive, Ballyhoura Development. The care industry in Ireland is a major growth area, with strong demand for carers, home care support, medical assistants and healthcare support workers. This programme has been designed to meet the needs of the ever-growing care industry in Ireland with work experience built into the programme to support increased understanding of client care and care settings. The programme enables full participation by designing a flexible training programme with ongoing personal and professional supports. The Healthcare Opportunities training network will provide a facilitated support mechanism to participants to encourage commitment throughout the training and into sustainable employment. BOOTS IRELAND GENERATES €367M IN REVENUE IN 2016 The Irish arm of pharmacy chain Boots reported a trading revenue of €367 million for the 12 months to the end of August 2016. It generated a profit of €22.4 million. Revenue for the previous period was €452 million, however this was for 17 months due to a change in the group’s reporting period, ruling out a like-for-like comparison. LOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE MARK ON HOARDING ART PROJECT AT SITE OF NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Shannon Redmond from the Rialto Youth Project Children and young people from Dublin 8 have taken part in an art project that will see a section of the hoarding erected around the new children’s hospital transformed to a design of their creation. A group from the Rialto Youth Project were the first local group to work on the hoarding, under the expert tutelage of street artists Emmalene Blake, Gordon Rice and Lanni Power, who are training them in the

specialist techniques of street art. Located across from the Rialto Luas Station, a 60-metre section of hoarding that now surrounds the construction site has been illustrated by the local children and will remain in place for the duration of the four-year construction of the hospital. This is the latest initiative by the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) to involve the local community in the development of the hospital. “The NPHDB are committed to ensuring that the new children’s hospital is a good neighbour and that the local community benefits from its location in their area,” said Ingrid McElroy, community benefit programme manager. “The hoarding around the construction site will be in place for the next four years”.

As well as showing images of what the new hospital will look like, we wanted the local community to have an input its design. “The new children’s hospital will be a world-class facility. It will transform children’s healthcare for all of Ireland, and it will also be a catalyst for regeneration in the communities surrounding it so we have a programme of work in place to ensure that local benefit from having the hospital on their doorstep as much as is possible, particularly in terms of employment opportunities.” Nicola Mooney from the Rialto Youth Project added: “We believe in the transformative power of art and creativity as a way of working with young people, we find that it’s a great way to introduce them to a broad spectrum of issues.”

INTERNATIONAL NEWS DEAL ACTIVITY IN UK HEALTHCARE SECTOR CONFOUNDS BREXIT PESSIMISM – RESEARCH

Political uncertainty following the UK’s decision a year ago to leave the European Union appears to have had little effect on confidence in the healthcare sector, according to new research from Catalyst Corporate Finance. Furthermore, investment activity was found to have little changed since the Brexit vote. Some 103 companies in the UK healthcare sector were acquired during the first half of 2017, the data revealed, while a further 70 businesses received investment funding. The figures were barely changed from the same period of last year, when 104 companies were acquired and 76 secured funding. Moreover, Catalyst’s data shows that in many healthcare sub-sectors, deal activity actually rose during the first half. For example, some 42 facilities businesses were acquired this year against only 31 in 2016, while there were seven transactions in the pharmaceuticals sub-sector, against four during the first half a year ago.

NEW PSI APPOINTMENTS The council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), the pharmacy regulator, has elected Rory O’Donnell as its new president and Nicola Cantwell as its new vice-president. O’Donnell is a community pharmacist with a pharmacy in Gweedore, Co Donegal while Cantwell lectures on the Pharmacy Technician Course in IT Carlow and coordinates the work placement modules. She is now working as clinical governance pharmacist with Caredoc. Seven new members have also been appointed to the council of the PSI. All appointments are effective immediately, with the council continuing in its governing capacity to oversee the functions of the PSI, as the pharmacy regulator, to assure public trust and confidence in pharmacy through its regulatory remit. Projects in development include setting renewed focus for the PSI under its next Corporate Strategy for 2018-2020, and a review of the Pharmacist Code of Conduct, which establishes the ethical standards and expectations applicable to registered pharmacists in Ireland.

“This is another significant investment for The Hut Group. In Glossybox we have acquired a great brand, with a solid and engaged customer base that, once powered through our platform and marketing infrastructure, should be capable of further significant growth,” said Matthew Moulding, founder and CEO, THG. “At THG we have a relentless focus on both technology and beauty. With our world-class proprietary e-commerce platform, we are confident we will continue to deliver strong growth and extend our global reach.” CEO of Glossybox Caren Genthner-Kappesz added: “I am very excited about this acquisition. It was extremely important to us to find the right buyer for our brand; one that complements us and can use its retail know-how and technological capabilities to accelerate and strengthen Glossybox further in its journey of being a global industry leading brand and a well trusted beauty advisor for our engaged subscribers.”

Perfectil has announced X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger as the latest face of the beauty supplements for skin, hair and nails. To mark her new brand ambassador role the singer and actress conducted a study into the skincare regime of Irish women, which found that Irish women are very conscious of taking care of their skin – 83% said they have a daily skincare regime, while almost half (47%) reported that they began looking after their skin when they were teenagers. Meanwhile, 65% of those surveyed said they take their makeup off every night. Just 5% said they never take their makeup off before going to bed. Nearly three-quarters (70%) of those surveyed use more than three skincare products for their skincare regime, with moisturiser being regarded as the product most people can’t do without (61%), followed by cleanser (19%). The survey also found that Irish people subscribe to the old adage that ‘you are what you eat’ with 73% reporting that they feel their diet affects the condition of their hair and skin and 39% admitting they make a conscious effort to eat better when they feel their skin isn’t at its best. A total of 62% said they had taken supplements to help improve the condition of their skin, hair and nails.

TEETHING TROUBLES Just as teething babies need soothing, so too do their parents when they present at the counter wondering what to do. So here’s what you need to know to dispense some advice Teething precisely refers to 'cutting teeth' and happens when the milk teeth or baby teeth erupt through the gums. A baby's initial tooth will certainly show somewhere between six and seven months, although the baby teeth develop when the baby is growing in the womb and teething may begin as early as five months. The initial tooth will be a front tooth (lower incisor) and it is directly followed by its next door neighbour. The second batch of teething will be the top incisors, which may occur somewhere from six to nine months. Occasionally the four top front teeth make their appearance one after the other. These will be followed by the remaining two lower incisors so that by the time a baby is about 10 months old, they could have a row of four top and four bottom front teeth. A child is usually aged around two or three years when they have their full set of first teeth. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Children and babies can differ significantly with the symptoms they develop when they are teething, so there are a variety to be aware of. A baby does not usually understand why he is bothered by an itchy chin, wakes up with soreness in his mouth and feels so achy. Symptoms of teething usually show up in a few days (or even weeks) prior to the time the tooth comes through the gum and they include drooling, teething rash, coughing and/ or gag reflex, biting and crying.

finger can ease the pain. Chewing on vegetables or chilled fruit may help. However, teething rusks or biscuits must be discouraged as they contain sugar. Cool drinks: Cool, sugar-free drinks will help to soothe a baby's gums and may help if they are dribbling excessively. The best option is to give them cool water that is not not too cold. Preventing rashes: If teething is making a baby dribble more than usual, parents can frequently wipe their chin and the rest of their face. This will help to prevent them from developing a rash. It’s also useful for a baby to sleep on an absorbent sheet. Teething rings: These give a baby something to safely chew on, which may ease their discomfort and provide a distraction from any pain. Some teething rings can be cooled first in the fridge, which may help to soothe a baby's gums. Parents should follow the instructions that come with the ring so they know how long to chill it for. A teething ring should never be put in the freezer as it could damage a baby's gums if it becomes very hard or cold. Also, a teething ring should never be tied around a baby's neck as it may be a choking hazard. A useful alternative to a teething ring is a cold, wet flannel. Teething gels: These often contain a mild local anaesthetic, which helps to numb any pain or discomfort caused by teething. The gels may also contain antiseptic ingredients, which help to prevent infection in any sore or broken skin in a baby's mouth. The teething gel should be specifically designed for young children and not a general oral pain relief gel, which is not suitable for children. Teething gel options for babies can be discussed with the pharmacist or GP.

TREATMENT/ADVICE While many children and babies will have no or minimal symptoms when they are teething so will not require any treatment, the following may be helpful for those who are having the symptoms.

Medicine to help the pain: If a baby is in pain or has a raised temperature, parents may want to give them a painkilling medicine that has been specifically designed for children. These medicines contain a small dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease any discomfort. The medicine should also be sugar-free. Dosage instructions that come with the medicine should be followed. Aspirin or salicylate salt-based products should not be given to children under 16 years old.

General advice: Softly rubbing over the affected area, that is the gum, with a neat

IPR AT THE COUNTER Advice from the Irish Pharmacy Union suggests that routine screening for lice helps to reduce the spread of the infection within schools and assists in reducing the scale of the outbreaks. There is no way of preventing head lice but the earlier their presence on the head is detected, the easier it is to get rid of the lice. Parents should check their children’s hair regularly, ideally once a week.

A male head louse, an obligate ectoparasitic insect that spends its entire life on the human scalp and feeds exclusively on human blood

GOT A LICESENSE TO KILL A

s the kids settle into a new school year, outbreaks of head lice will unfortunately be on the rise so here’s what you need to know to dispense some counter advice to parents looking to get rid of any infestations. Head lice are pinhead-sized insect that do not cause a serious health issue, however they do cause itching and irritation in the scalp, which may result in infection due to frequent scratching. Children are most likely to have head lice infestations because of their relative close proximity to one another in schools and the playground. They are not a cause for embarrassment nor are they a cause of unhygienic environments, but because of their highly contagious nature they simply thrive in busy close human to human places, like classrooms, kids parties, sport activities and camps. It is estimated that one in ten children suffer from head lice at any one time, with 80% of head lice infestations occurring in children between the ages of four and 16.

18 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

While itching may be caused by head lice, an infestation cannot be confirmed until one detects live lice in the head as itching can be a symptom of many other things too such as dandruff. Due to the small size of the lice, they are quite difficult to identify even if you inspect the scalp very closely. The best way to look up for head lice is with a detecting comb. Parents should know that a detecting comb is far more effective on wet hair as lice are motionless when wet. After shampooing and conditioning the hair and using a regular comb, the detecting comb is then used to go portion by portion from the root of the hair to the bottom so that all the hair is examined. Treatment should only be applied if a living, moving louse is found. While it is understandable that parents want to try and prevent an outbreak, using treatment products as a precautionary measure does not work.

TREATMENT

Head lice are capable of developing resistance and have a high rate of re-infestation, which makes it difficult to get rid of them completely. But they can’t fly or hop and are transferred only by head to head contact. When advising parents, remember that children of all ages are vulnerable to pesticides, especially those who suffer from asthma, allergies or have a pre-existing skin condition. It is always best to seek advice from the pharmacist on the best treatment to use as there are a number of treatments available, such as medicated lotions and sprays containing silicon and oil-based preparation. Again, note that these can be used only when live lice is found to be present. Products to treat head lice should never be used ‘just in case’. Pregnant women, patients who are allergic or have asthma as well as babies less than six months old should not be prescribed any type of lotion or spray.

A STING IN THE TAIL

N

ew research findings are set to standardise the first aid treatment of jellyfish stings, which are quite a common complaint among the Irish population. The research from NUI Galway and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa has identified the best way to treat a sting from the lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). The lion’s mane jellyfish is the most problematic jellyfish in Ireland and the UK with 100s of bathers being badly stung each year. With over a 1,000 tentacles that can stretch up to four or five metres in length, a bad sting from a lion’s mane jellyfish can cause severe local reactions and extreme pain. The research, published in the international journal Toxins shows that the best first aid for a lion’s mane sting is to rinse with vinegar (or the commercial product Sting No More spray) to remove tentacles, and then immerse in 45°C (113°F) hot water (or apply a heat pack) for 40 minutes. The results mirror a recent NUI Galway and University of Hawai’i study on stings from the Portuguese man o’ war and previous work on box jellyfish stings. “What most people don’t understand is that these jellyfish – the lion’s mane, the Portuguese man o’ war and a box jellyfish, are as different from each other as a dog and a snake,” explained Dr Tom Doyle, lead author of the study and lecturer in zoology from the School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway. “Therefore when developing first aid treatment for a jellyfish sting it is very

important to test different treatments on these very different types of jellyfish. Now that we have shown that vinegar and hot water work on these three jellyfish species, it will be much easier to standardise and simplify first aid for jellyfish stings where many different types of jellyfish occur.” In Ireland and the UK, current best practices recommend using sea water and cold packs, which is not the correct action for treating these jellyfish stings as it induces significant increases in venom delivery, while rinsing with vinegar or Sting No More Spray did not. Dr Doyle now hopes to bring together members of the Jellyfish Advisory Group in Ireland to discuss his latest findings. While most jellyfish stings in Ireland and the UK are no worse than a nettle sting, they still cause pain and discomfort and require treatment. However, it’s worth noting that human urine is not the solution. That old wives’ tale of peeing on a jellyfish sting to cure it is simply that – an old wives’ tale. The idea is that the acidity of urine can fight the nematocysts delivered by the jellyfish onto human skin, but, according to the American Chemical Society, urine is nowhere near acidic enough to deal with powerful stings that cause humans pain. Furthermore, the urine isn’t the right temperature, meaning that the sting can be exacerbated. FATTY ACID FACTS When recommending omega oils to customers, you should be aware of the differences between them, which work best together and what health applications they have.

O

mega-3 oils are amongst the most popular supplements and you probably have a selection on your shelves. Are you aware of the differences in these oils? In this article we will cover high strength versus lower strength oils, oils suitable for vegans versus fish oils and why omega-3 and 6 supplements should be recommended together. In addition, some of the common health conditions omega-3 oils may support will also be discussed. High strength versus lower strength: Fish oils are an abundant source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Triglycerides, which are comprised of three fatty acids such as EPA and DHA linked to a glycerol backbone, are the form of fats found in most food sources such as wild Alaskan salmon and sardines. Most fish oil products are in the triglyceride form, which normally provide a ratio of 18:12 EPA:DHA or 180:120mg in a 1000mg product. Some fish oil products provide a higher concentration of EPA and DHA, meaning that levels above 120:180 per 1000mg of oil can be achieved. The concentration of omega-3s in these fish oils have been increased through a process called ethylation. Ethyl esters may be a good form of fish oil to recommend to customers who are not consuming enough oily fish in their diet or who have health issues such as increased risk of cardiovascular conditions or

dementia. The triglyceride form may be more suited to those who already incorporate some omega-3s in their diet and want their supplement to reflect the levels that are found in nature. Balance of omega-3 omega-6: Linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) are ‘essential’ fatty acids and once consumed they are converted by enzymes into other molecules for use by the body. ALA tends to have vegan sources such as flaxseed oil and hemp seed oil and these need to be converted by enzymes into EPA for use in the body. If there any deficiencies in these mineral-dependent enzymes (such as low levels of magnesium) this conversion may be inhibited. So if your customer is OK to eat fish it would be advisable to recommend fish oils over seed-based oils as fish oils are further down the body’s omega-3 series pathway. Both the omega-3 and omega-6 pathways use the same enzymes called delta-6 desaturase and delta 5 desaturase and both fatty acids have to compete for these enzymes to create their important biologically active end products. It has been reported that the preferred pathway for delta-5-desaturase and delta-6 desaturase is the omega-3 pathway so for diets high in omega-3 fatty acids most of the enzymes will be busy converting the omega-3 acids. In the omega-6 fatty acid pathway, Dihomo-Gamma-Linolenic Acid (DGLA) can be converted to either the anti-inflammatory series 1

22 www.irishpharmacyretailer.com

prostaglandin (PGE1) or arachidonic acid (AA) which is a precursor of pro-inflammatory series 2 prostaglandin (PGE2). Conversion of DGLA into PGE1 does not require any enzymes but conversion of DGLA into AA requires the enzyme delta-5 desaturase. In diets high in omega-3 most of the delta-5 desaturase will be used in the omega-3 pathway: very little delta-5 desaturase will be available to covert DGLA into AA (and therefore PGE2). DGLA ends up being converted into the anti-inflammatry PGE1 and inflammation is decreased. In a diet low in omega-3 fatty acids, large quantities of delta-5 desaturase enzymes are available to convert DGLA into AA. Thus the more omega-3 fatty acids present the fewer enzymes are available for converting omega-6 into the inflammatory prostaglandins. A balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is therefore essential but the typical Western diet is high in omega-6 and low in omega-3. The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is considered to be between to 2:1 and 1:1. For many people, an increase in consumption of omega-6 fatty acids has led to a ratio that is nearer to 20:1. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids (particularly those found in fish oils) may help to restore balance in the body. Therefore, when recommending GLA-containing omega-6 oils (such as evening primrose oil) it would be advisable to recommend an omega-3 supplement at the same time.

Health applications Fish oils have numerous applications in health, including cardiovascular support and brain health. A review paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology deduced that there is strong evidence for omega-3 fatty acids being bioactive compounds that reduce risk of cardiac health. They also highlighted the international guidelines for the general population to consume a minimum of 250mg / day of long chain omega -3 PUFAs. Also, for those who have suffered a heart attack fish oil supplements may help in the recovery period. Meanwhile, DHA is critical for building the structural foundations of a healthy brain, most notably before conception and throughout pregnancy and lactation. A recent review on the effect of omega 3 fatty acids on the function of the brain found that EPA and DHA intake was directly associated with the development and functioning of the brain. Research has suggested that EPA consumption resulted in structural changes within the brain of those with depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties and research proposes a possible link between inflammation in the body and anxiety. A recent review on omega-3 consumption and cognitive performance concluded that omega-3 fatty acids are required during periods of cognitive development. The authors also noted that research has suggested adequate omega-3 intake can help restore cognitive performance in omega-3 depleted young adults.

Conor and Denise Phelan

THE PHELAN PHILOSOPHY

P

helans Pharmacies are a family-owned group of pharmacies based in Cork, with one outlet in Stillorgan, Co. Dublin. Run by Conor and Denise Phelan, they opened their first pharmacy in Carrigaline, Co Cork in 1988. Their philosophy is based on being there when their customer wants them to be. They designed designed their pharmacies to provide focused services at a community level and believe that you don’t have to be bigger to be better. IPR chats to Conor about running the business. How important is being a ‘local pharmacy’ to your business and how do you approach community relations? I think it is very important. To be local and long established can be a significant advantage. Sometimes I do think it is overestimated with customer and attitude surveys showing that customers expect to get better value in chains (this is

one of the attractions of the symbol groups). Phelans in Cork has the advantage of being local and a chain and thus I think we can combine the customer perception of local with that of value. In relation to community relations we would have a bias towards sponsoring local and community events and many of the requests for local sponsorship tend to be affordable. We also sponsor one major running event in Cork (The Great Railway Run) and some smaller ones. We also run an annual couch to 5K running programme in one of our outlets and we are considering expanding this What health concerns have been affecting your customers most in recent times? These haven't changed with customers continuing to worry about heart disease, cancer, diabetes or whatever particular ailment they have been diagnosed with. There is a large cohort who don't seem

to worry about their health at all and continue to make poor lifestyle choices. I'm often surprised that they actuallty take their medication. This does suggest, of course, that they are concerned about their health but for whatever reason are unable to modify their lifestyles. Are there any economic issues that you think might affect your business in the coming months? You know the answer to this: Brexit is the big unknown. It seems like it will have a negative impact as even property investments in Ireland are considered more risky than before. How exactly it will impact on pharmacy is unknown but the Government is our biggest paymaster and I hope Brexit wont be an excuse for delaying the reversal of FEMPI (Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) cuts. If you would like to feature your pharmacy in one of our upcoming issues simply email: news@irishpharmacyretailer.com

The Cosmetic Association

Trade Fair 2017 The Cosmetic Association (TCA) 2017 Trade Fair was the most successful trade fair to date! The event was held in RDS from the 21-23 May inclusive.

We are looking forward to preparing for next year already!

Both exhibitor and visitor numbers were increased with almost 1,500 buyers attending over the course of the event. We had the largest number of exhibitors to date and the widest ranges of products ever.

The Cosmetic Association is very happy to see an increase in the number of pharmacy buyers who travel from Northern Ireland to the RDS where we arrange the largest event, under one roof, for the pharmacy sector in both jurisdictions. We hope you will continue to support us in future years.

The exhibitors pulled out all the stops with regards to dressing their stands and the compliments from the buyers were very encouraging. New members brought excitement to the show and they were very happy with their experience. The word on the street is; most buyers are saying that they will spend two days at the event in future, to allow them get around all the lovely stands.

PLANNING AHEAD HELPS YOU MAKE THE MOST OF CHRISTMAS RETAILING

N

ow is the time to plan your Christmas time trade. Get ready to boost your business by selling gift vouchers, says business expert

Liz McKeon.

The Christmas season is always an opportune time of the year to make some profit for your business and to increase retail sales. Selling gift vouchers or gift cards is a great way to keep customers coming back after the holiday season.

Easy ways to increase your Christmas voucher sales: Place gift vouchers around the pharmacy. Use these items as part of the decor, so that customers are aware that gift vouchers are available. Change these items at least once per week to maximize exposure. Send an email newsletter to your database highlighting the benefits of gift vouchers. Announcements about gift voucher availability can help to increase voucher sales and promote your brand. Make sure to time your email distribution appropriately. Make sure your business contains information about gift vouchers. Ensure your website is up to date about how easy it is to purchase gift vouchers from you. Provide lots of information about availability, highlighting the benefits of giving a voucher. Offer free gift wrapping. Shoppers appreciate this extra touch and this step adds more perceived value to the purchase. Invest in some eye-catching envelopes, decorative ribbon or small gift boxes for your vouchers and turn it into a real ‘gift’. Include a coupon or offer with purchase. Give the giver a small gift such as a free product, a coupon

for a future service they can use for themselves, or a salon voucher with a smaller amount already loaded onto it. Incentives to purchase a gift voucher can boost retail sales. Selling gift vouchers regularly helps to secure your business and help to maintain a healthy cash flow. With the right marketing strategy it can help to promote your brand too. A marketing strategy should include your website, which needs to be up to date and ready for the festive season. On the homepage, actively promote gift sets and vouchers. Make it easy and simple to order online. Focus your shop’s marketing and selling efforts on the first five and third five days of the month. Most people get paid on the last day of the month or on the 15th and research has found that 64% of people spend the bulk of their discretionary income within the first five days after pay day.

So plan and kick start your Christmas retail and voucher campaign now, let December be your most profitable time of this year! Employment Rights As the autumn and winter seasons loom, what are your rights in relation to time off work to attend medical appointments, do you need to pay staff for their time out of the office, or should they book them in their own time? Pensinsula Business Services finds out.

Generally, employers do not need to pay staff for time taken off for attending appointments such as doctors or dentists appointments, or any other medically related meeting. The employee is not at work; therefore does not need to be paid. However, contracts of employment should be checked, to ensure that there is no contractual provision entitling the employee to full pay during time taken off for this reason. The key consideration with this issue is the content of any written company policy, such as a sickness absence policy. Although medical practices are attempting to cater more and more for patients who work full-time hours, it is sometimes not possible for an employee to control the time of their appointment so that it does not impact on their working day. If the employee is a flexi-worker, or works part-time, it may be easier for them to attend such appointments outside of working hours; however, it may be too restrictive and unreasonable to expect this of all of your employees. They will generally be told by the practice when to attend for their appointment and will have no say in this if they want to be seen promptly.

As such, clarity in company policies is absolutely essential. For example, what if your company has a sick pay policy whereby staff members are paid some or all of the wages when out on sick leave? Does this policy specifically exclude or include medical appointments where the employee isn’t sick, per se? It is very much advised that employers include specific clauses which address this circumstance in their employment documentation encouraging employees to make these appointments outside of their working hours. Another key consideration is the custom and practice within an organisation. If you have always paid employees for such time off then you may be bound to do so going forward as it may be deemed an implied term and condition of employment. Remember, if you do not pay for such time and this has always been your custom and practice, then this does not mean that other arrangements can’t be made with the employee where they can still be paid. For example, can the employee take the time as annual leave? Can the employee be paid for the absence but work back the time at a later date?

What About Antenatal Classes? The situation is different when the employee is pregnant and the appointment is for antenatal care. A pregnant employee is entitled to take time off work with pay during normal working hours to attend ante-natal appointments. The right applies regardless of length of service, size of employer or the number of hours worked by the employee per week. The right also extends to travelling time and waiting time in connection with the appointment, not simply the time spent in the appointment itself. Antenatal care can include relaxation and parent-craft classes, so is not just limited to medical examinations. Other than for the first appointment, the employee must provide at least two weeks’ notice of her appointments unless there are exceptional circumstances, which make such notice impossible. Furthermore, the employee must produce a certificate confirming that she is pregnant and an appointment card (or similar document) from a registered medical practitioner, or a registered midwife, showing that an appointment has been made. Most employers are not aware that fathers also have rights in respect of paid time to attend ante-natal classes. Fathers are entitled to paid time off to attend the last two ante-natal classes, but this is a one-off entitlement and does not apply to all pregnancies. Employees requesting time off for medical appointments is a common issue that all employers face. If you are unsure of how to handle the matter then Peninsula can assist. Call 01 1890 252.

READY STEADY, RETIRE

N

obody wants to think about retiring, but being prepared for it by starting a pension plan is often the best decision a company owner will make, advises Ted Dwyer.

Age next Birthday

Monthly payment required

40 45 50 55 60

€1,618 €2,214 €3,168 €4,898 €8,856

The decision to start a pension plan is often the best decision a company owner will make because if it is looked after well, and if sufficient money is put in over the years, it can in time give the company owner total financial independence, outside of their pharmacy business.

The above examples show the obvious advantage of starting as soon as possible to get the benefits of long-term compound interest growth.

Let’s have a look at a few examples as to what has to be put in each month to achieve that magic fund of €1 million at, say, a retirement age of 68. In these examples I am assuming that the fund will grow by 4% each year after charges. This is naturally not guaranteed as values will rise and fall depending on market conditions.

The tax-free cash at retirement age and the substantial tax reliefs are naturally what attract people to start pension planning. If someone does have a pension fund worth €1,000,000 at retirement age, the amount of tax-free cash is quite substantial. My most commonly used parting comment is “use the tax benefits on pensions or lose them!”.
