Editor's Letter

Nominated as ’Best Business to Business Magazine, 2012’

Dear Readers, Last month our neighbours and very important trading partners the United Kingdom decided to exit the EU for various reasons. Will it affect us? I can only hope that nothing will change within our beauty industry, but that will become more apparent in the coming months and years as Brexit is negotiated. You can stay up-to-date with issues that may impact our business and industry within each issue of Beauty Professional Ireland Magazine. On a lighter note, we are busy covering the latest trends in beauty, spa and hair. We have a plethora of fabulous products for your beauty, spa and hair business, both treatment wise and for retail add-ons. Within our HR section (page 50) we look at what happens when an employee is spotted out and about while on sick leave. But our pièce de résistance in this issue is our Tanning 2016 Supplement on pages 26, where we introduce Kevin McGlinchey of The Sunbed Association, who will be a regular contributor to Beauty Professional Ireland Magazine, and will impart his expert advice in each issue on the terms and conditions that govern the Irish sunbed industry. Check out some more excellent speakers presenting at the upcoming CIDESCO congress in September on page 36 and as always, drop me an email if you would like to be featured in any upcoming issues, I would love to hear from you - editor@beautyprofessional.ie Love,

News Worthy BREXIT - WHAT DOES IT BODE FOR THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY? We live in a time of tumultuous upheaval. Whatever way you look at Brexit - as a righteous revolt against the ’masters’ of Europe, outright xenophobia, or an illinformed mistake - it has instigated a time of incredible uncertainty. If you own or work for a beauty business you’re probably wondering what Brexit means for you. However, you can take some comfort in the fact that even with the rapid exit that many are calling for in the EU, it will take some time before the effects, good or bad, are apparent. Negotiations It’s all in the negotiations, that is if the UK can cut a deal with the EU to keep trade and commerce the same as before. There are so many hopes at this stage, some hoping that Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon can block it, some that the

markets will stabilise and recession can be avoided. Those who voted for ’out’ that Brexit will continue and the UK will prevail. It could even mean good fortune for Ireland if the rumours that banks and multinationals may re-locate here are true. Ultimately, it may affect the beauty

BRAVE CYCLISTS WAXPERT(ED) FOR CHARITY Men have terribly hairy legs! As Waxperts Education Ambassador, Amelia Redhead found out recently. She had a tough job on her hands – getting through nearly two pots of strip wax, 150 waxing strips and 250 spatulas to get six pairs of legs hair free. Using the Irish brand she waxed the Yorkshire contingent of a 125-strong team of charity cyclists who have gone the extra mile to raise as much money as possible for 1moreChild – a charity empowering vulnerable children in Uganda through games, education and mentoring. The team embarked on a 400 mile cycling challenge from Rome to Puglia in Italy. Team member, James Mortimer, Chief Financial and Chief Operating Officer at Sweet Squared, Waxperts' exclusive UK distributor, said: “We’re all keen cyclists and have trained hard for this trip. I tried selling it to the guys as a way to improve our aero-dynamism - but really it was about getting in as much cash as possible through sponsors!” Go to: sweetsquared.com/Waxperts C

Beauty business coach Liz Mckeon has teamed up with Beauty Manufacturer and distributor SkinBase, to create new reality TV show, The £200 Salon Turnaround!
The idea for the show came about last year when Liz and Richard Faulkner, MD of Skinbase, decided to hold a free seminar for business development for salons. Two hundred therapists attended and within two weeks of putting into practise the skills and advice given to them, almost all had reported a 25% improvement in profits, while others had literally doubled their business. Nothing discussed during the seminar had a huge price tag attached to do it, and that got Liz and Richard thinking about what they could achieve if they spent two weeks intensively assessing, training and teaching failing or struggling salons. PATERNITY LEAVE COMES IN We are are becoming a more equal country! From September 2016, fathers will be given the option of availing of two weeks paid paternity leave within the first 26 weeks of the birth of their child. The statutory paternity leave will be paid at 230 Euro per week and is based on the same PRSI requirements as maternity leave. While the new leave entitlement will certainly present challenges for employers, particularly those in smaller enterprises, there are also some considerable positive impacts: Positive impacts of the legislation: V It builds on existing legislation such as parental leave and carers leave providing further opportunities to balance life and work commitments. V In the wider context of gender equality in the workplace, this recognition of the care of children being the responsibility of both parents is also a positive initiative in supporting the return 6•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

of women to the workplace. V The legislation also brings Ireland in line with most other European countries where there has been a provision for paid paternity leave for many years. Concerns for business: V Concerns lie in the cost and administration of paternity leave. The absence of a member of staff is particularly challenging in small and medium size enterprises. Finding and training a replacement for a two week period is often unrealistic or unaffordable. And of course, the timing of a new arrival may coincide with the peak period in a business and that also presents challenges where key staff may be absent. The Bill requires only 4 weeks notice of the intention to take paternity leave. This increases the challenge of putting adequate cover in place for an absent team member. In the event of a baby arriving in advance of the expected date of confinement, that could potentially leave an employer with almost no notice.

Hennessy Heaven We chatted to Susan McCarthy of Hennessy Hair & Beauty

1 Susan McCarthy &

Brian McCarthy

What is your background? I joined my Dad in Hennessy Hair & Beauty 30 years ago! (I’m really showing my age now!) I started in our first premises on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork, where I became familiar with the business, products and our customers. I eventually went out on the road, where I was a rep for many years - which I loved as I got to know all our customers on a one-to-one basis and really enjoyed visiting salons. As the business grew my role changed as I needed to be in the office more for buying and meeting with suppliers. Now that my Dad has retired my role has changed again as Director of the Company. A typical day for me involves meeting with suppliers and salon owners, along with managing our large team here at Hennessy’s. I have learned so much from my Dad over the years that I feel that I will bring all this knowledge and expertise from him to the business for many years to come. What is your company‘s ethos? We feel that over the years we have developed a keen eye for quality products, reliable brands, and above all, fantastic customer service. Do you find that a lot of women are returning to work and re-training or up-skilling since the recession? Yes, I feel the recession changed everyone’s outlook on things. We find here in our training department we have a lot of customers returning to the trade and up-skilling. Also, since the recession customers are looking for the best value while also being very product savvy. So salons need to 12•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

offer high quality products and treatments at a competitive price. We feel we can offer all of that to our customers here at Hennessys with our wide range of products, services and our highly-skilled training team How do you choose the brands you distribute? We are very conscious of what our customers want and need. Based on this, we strive to find the best brands and high quality products at an affordable price. We have everything you need to set up and run your salon in hair and beauty. We truly believe in all our brands as we thoroughly research and trial everything before they are put on the shelves. What is on the horizon for Hennessy Hair & Beauty in 2017? I feel we are growing stronger every year due to our loyal customers, our fantastic team and keeping our products and services on trend and up to date. One of our many top brands, OPI is constantly changing and evolving to help the pro salon grow more and more. We are launching the 'OPI Trend Tour' this autumn and it will be an annual event to bring the #powertothepro. This will bring exciting new colours and trends to all nail techs. They will learn the latest nail art designs straight from the pros. Here you will learn to develop your business-building skills and impress your clients. This will be the ultimate skill-building getaway. To master new moneymaking trending colour finishes and nail design techniques – all while putting OPI’s powerful new business-building plan into action.

Eyelash Step-By-Step

Lash Contour Contouring using…eyelashes? Yes, it’s a beauty must-have! Zach Falb, International Trainer at NovaLash shares his expert advice on how eyelashes can be used to enhance facial features

Facial contouring is by far one of the world’s biggest beauty crazes – a craze that is showing no signs of slowing down. But for those clients who might not have the time, technique or patience to create a masterpiece of highlights and shading each morning NovaLash has developed a revolutionary way of looking artistically contoured without the lengthy process. Considering the strategic placement of each eyelash extension is a tried and tested way to create the illusion of slimmer, fuller, shorter, longer or more balanced facial proportions. And, as studies show that people look at the eyes four times more often than they look at the lips or other areas of the face, it’s wise to start with the eyes. How does it work? Eyelash extensions create strong, vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines that greatly influence the appearance of facial shapes. This concept is similar to horizontal stripes on clothing making a body look wider, while solid, slim-fitting, black clothing worn with high heels makes a body appear slender. A long, narrow face (think Sarah Jessica Parker) can greatly benefit from a side-swept, horizontal, cat-like eyelash line with long extensions concentrated on the outer corner of the eye. For wider, round, square or short faces (such as Mila Kunis), the goal is to add vertical lines with long extensions in the centre of the eyelash line. 20•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

This look draws peoples’ eyes up and down, thus slimming and lengthening the face. Heart and diamond shaped bone structure (similar to Scarlett Johansson) look great with a fairly uniform pattern across the lash line. Lastly, clients blessed with a balanced oval shape have the most options and can focus solely on enhancing the shape of the eye itself.

Tanning 2016

Welcome to your tanning supplement 2016. Tanning is getting so scientific these days, but we’re also going back to moisturising basics too, with traditional ingredients making a comeback. Don’t forget the old-fashioned way to get a tan, from the actual sun is still a choice for many. Vitamin D is hard to come by!

TANNING INDUSTRY OVERVIEW Despite catwalk trends of paleness, Irish women (and men) continue to buy self-tan, have tanning treatments and attend salons for spray tanning. That urge to look your best all year round appeals to people from all walks of life in Ireland. The general sun care industry rose by 4% in 2015, with an estimated 45% of Irish women and 20% of men opting for tanning care; spending tens of millions each year on tanning products. With a little bit more disposable income and more holidays on the horizon, tanning product use has

increased as the idea of going away 'pasty white' scares many Irish women, in particular. While many fake tans basically 'do the same thing' there is a marked difference between the finish from tans, the pigmentation it imbues and how it adapts to the individual client's skin. In our industry we should pride ourselves in knowing that one size doesn't always fit all and we should perhaps look at different tans for different clients. Essentially, if we commit ourselves to introducing more and more advanced tanning technology to our ever discerning clientele, they're worth it!

JOE MCGLINCHEY, THE SUNBED ASSOCIATION’S REPRESENTATIVE FOR IRELAND, INTRODUCES HIMSELF AS A BPI REGULAR COLUMNIST: For those of you who don’t know too much about The Sunbed Association (TSA), we are the only organisation in Ireland that provides advice, support and information dedicated to the indoor tanning operator. Our members benefit from access to training, advice, a members’ helpline, insurance, online salon locator for consumers, industry updates and reports on all things indoor tanning, including such topics as what protective eyewear meets legal requirements! Sunbed tanning has its detractors, with opinions very often built on myth generated through well funded publicity campaigns and spin on data. Bottom line, if someone has skin that can tan and has no other contra-indications to tanning, using a sunbed responsibly is a controlled way to tan. As your TSA Representative for Ireland, I am committed to working with salons to ensure they maximise the success of their UV business. I would love to pop in and discuss membership with you when I am next in your area. So if you’re interested, please do give me a call on the number below. MOROCCANTAN Infused with Argan Oil, MoroccanTan has harnessed that perfect tan - along with top tips! The advantages of spray tanning don’t have to be limited to achieving a beautiful bronzed glow - tanning and skincare come hand in hand with the MoroccanTan Exotic Collection. Packed full of luxurious ingredients including Argan Oil, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera and exclusive to the Exotic Collection, Rosehip Oil, the MoroccanTan Exotic Collection solutions deeply nourish the skin and provide intense hydration – particularly important to help combat the drying effects of DHA in spray tan solutions. Deeply moisturised skin not only helps protect against signs of premature ageing but also helps deliver a longer lasting golden glow with a gradual natural fade. The collection also benefits from the MoroccanTan’s signature FT100 Firming & Toning Technology, which is only found in the Exotic Collection. A blend of Caffeine, Vitamins and O2 help to achieve firmer skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines resulting in overall younger looking skin, while maintaining natural moisture balance. complement a warm skin tone. Rich violet bronzers mixed with deep ashy browns uniquely react with each skin type to ensure a perfect bronzed tan and prevent any ‘orange’ tones. MoroccanTan Exotic Collection’s Key Ingredients and Benefits: Organic Rosehip Oil - Bursting with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that calm and hydrate dry skin while assisting in the reduction of scars and fine lines. A natural source of Vitamins A and C, and Omega 3 and 6, to promote healthy and radiant looking skin. Organic Argan Oil - high in natural Vitamin E, protects and nourishes the skin keeping it healthy and hydrated helping shield and reduce the signs of premature ageing and offers the skin a natural boost. Organic Aloe Vera - contains Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and B12, Vitamins C and E, folic acid and Niacin among as many as 75 nutrients, 20 minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids and 200 active enzymes. Aloe’s helps hydrate, rejuvenate and soften the skin. Vitamin E - an antioxidant that protects and repairs the skin from free radicals and helps soften and smooth the skin, relieving dryness and promotes healing.

Top Tips to Ensure Your Clients Get the Perfect Tan Nicola Badmus, MoroccanTan Education Ambassador and Lead Trainer Select the right solution – one size (or solution!) doesn’t fit all. Choose a solution with the right green or violet base and a DHA percentage that will complement and enhance the client’s natural skin by neutralising pink or yellow tones thus creating the perfect MoroccanTan for each individual. Don’t be tempted to overspray – a good quality solution married with a good technique will ensure you don’t need to do two coats. Of course touch up if you’ve missed a spot, but over spraying not only wastes solution (and therefore eats in to your profits) but you can also increase the risk of patchy wear off. Attention to detail – it’s the little things that can count and transform an average spray tan treatment into a fantastic one! Before you start, remember the hair net and sticky feet, offer disposable pants and use barrier cream on particularly dry areas like elbows and knees if necessary. Make sure your lighting is good enough to see your client’s body clearly while spraying and after you’ve finished, wipe over the client’s finger and toe nails to remove any solution. Give great aftercare advice – there’s no point in your client doing all the prep and you giving them a fantastic spray if they then go home in tight skinny jeans and spray on a bottle of perfume! Make sure you explain the do’s and don’ts and you’ll have clients thrilled with the perfect tan! Contact: Go to www.sweetsquared. com, or Tel: +353 (0) 1 408 91 91

Right Cut

Irina Ivanova of Estetik Ireland leads an expert team in machine-led manicure and pedicure disciplines. In the first part of two articles, Irina will tell you all about the importance of the right tools for nail perfection The machine approach in manicure and pedicure is becoming increasingly popular. Nail technicians realise that electric files and specialised machines are very precise and can save the time otherwise used on filing nails by hand. And what is more, the machine approach allows practitioners to get superb results in achieving well-groomed hands and feet for their clients as machines effortlessly remove unsightly dry skin and trim the cuticles. In this issue, I would like to talk about the rotating instruments used in the machine approach. There is a number of brands on the market which vary in price. All instruments are manufactured to standard specifications, which means they should fit any type of machines and nail files.
However, the quality of the rotating instruments will determine how well the technician will be able to their job and how frequently the instruments will have to be replaced. All rotating instruments presented in this article are manufactured by Busch, a world leader among rotating instrument manufacturers. The company was established in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1905 by two brothers Ernst and Otto Busch who initially wanted to advance an emerging field of dentistry by producing better instruments. Over a hundred years on the company, which is still owned by Busch family, operates from Engelskirchen in Germany and is characterised by constant adjustment to the latest developments in science and technology. Fifty years ago the company branched out into manufacturing rotating instruments for the beauty industry as the machine approach in pedicure and manicure gained popularity. Today, the company produces over 300 types of burs and cutters and supplies customers in over 100 countries worldwide. Stainless carbide cutter The most established line of products favoured by many nail technicians and machine / pedicure practitioners for the past 20 years is manufactured from

carbide, a material which is tough and durable. Carbide cutters are used for removal of gel, acrylic and natural nail material and the accurate shaping of the nail surface. These cutters are also effective when working with glitter gel, 3D technology, inlay material, as well as removal of very hard calluses and trimming of hard cuticles. Stainless carbide cutters come in a gradations of grits – fine, medium, coarse and very coarse. For working on very thick, bent nails. Size 0.4-0.6 mm. Speed 5.000 – 25.00 min.

TWO INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SPEAKERS take to the Stage at the

CIDESCO CONGRESS this September

Dr. Des Fernandes to present at CIDESCO Congress CIDESCO Section Ireland are delighted to announce that Celebrity Plastic Surgeon and pioneer of Medical Micro Needling and creator of the Environ Range of Skincare, Dr. Des Fernandes will present in Ireland for the very first time at the Congress to be held in association with Profession Beauty Dublin in September. Hailing from South Africa, he studied at the Witwatersrand University and then became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. He left South Africa to start training in Plastic Surgery but trained instead in Cardio-thoracic surgery and returned to Cape Town to work with Prof. Christiaan Barnard for several years and was involved in the first double heart transplant. However, he then made a radical change and decided to specialise in plastic surgery. He has pioneered the use of vitamin A in cosmetics to give similar results to using retinoic acid in order to be able to achieve more convincing rejuvenation of the skin. He then pioneered skin needling techniques, which has become an internationally recognised treatment effective in the rejuvenation of lax skin, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. A treatment which has almost as many detractors as advocates it is certainly a talking point amongst professionals and Dr. Fernandes is one of the most engaging speakers you will ever hear and his knowledge and respect for the work of the Beauty Therapist is really refreshing and motivational. Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to hear him speak and to ask him all those burning questions you have regarding these treatments.

Dr. Ridwan Mia is another South African Plastic and reconstructive surgeon, but one who specialises in the area of burns and skin grafting. Having heard him present at a conference in South Africa, Sheila Curran, the President of CIDESCO Ireland became determined to bring him to speak in Dublin. She says “His lecture was probably the most memorable I have ever heard and I have been to many lectures over the course of the last 35 years. It was not for the fainthearted and some of the images were very distressing but he told the extraordinary story of how he cloned human skin for the very first time in history to treat a three year-old child who had suffered burns to 80% of her body. It was pretty horrific to see but the story of how he and his team of experts from many disciplines came together to treat this little girl will remain with me always. Her chance of survival was 10% at most and grafting was not an option so he decided to try and clone skin from the only patch of her little body that was not burnt.” Dr Mia will again tell this story when here in Dublin and it truly is a lecture you will not want to miss. Aside from the pure human aspect of the story it is scientifically unique and has opened the door for the cloning of human skin in the treatment of burns and other major skin traumas. It will make you cry from both the pain of the challenge, as well as the achievement of the outcome.

He was awarded the Order of the Baobab by the President of South Africa for his ground-breaking and extraordinary work. He continues to do work with organisations like the Smile Foundation to bring specialised operations to underprivileged children in South Africa, raising funds from the corporate sector for this work, as well as seeking to establish a tissue engineering skin culture laboratory in South Africa. This is anticipated to make cutting edge medical technology available to all burn victims.

Fuschia Evolution We take a look at the timeline of ever evolving Irish brand, Fuschia, and some product news. It all starts in 2005 when Fuschia opens its first store in Scotch Hall in Drogheda. With the ethos of making quality make-up products while helping women to feel great about themselves. “We don’t just sell make-up, we sell confidence. We like to think that we sell happiness in a jar! Make-up applications are a huge part of our business and we have a team of amazing make-up artists working for us. We really enjoy spending time with our clients helping them to achieve the look that they want,” says Gillian Moore-Brady of her company. Weathering the recession well, in 2013 the company opens a second store in the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords. 2016 will see the launch of Fuschia's latest product: The High Definition Liquid Foundation Range.

EYE SHIMMERS They are mineral based loose pigments. They come in a variety of colours and add instant glamour to your eye make-up.

COVERAGE HD Foundation is a high coverage liquid foundation. It is lightweight and non-greasy with excellent coverage. It smooths and plumps the skin and contains ingredients which are derived from coconut oil and glycerin. This is often found in anti-ageing serums and leaves a smooth after touch.

BOOM BROW The award winning Boom Brow comes in three Shades. Its creamy mousse-like texture has a weightless feel and excellent speadability. It's also water resistant and the pigment stays in place all day long.

VELVET VEIL This illuminating primer contains Vitamin A and acts as a barrier for the skin, preventing moisture loss, adding to the skin's radiance. Its velvet texture helps it to glide across the skin.

SETTING SPRAY This product does exactly what it says! It works as a protective barrier preventing your make-up deteriorating throughout the day as you face the elements. It contains conditioning plant extracts, which are hydrating and non sticky. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatories also soothe the skin. With a couple of spritzes to the face it dries in a matter of seconds. Contact: www.fuschia.ie, info@fuschia.ie or +353 (0) 41 980 1562

Ur Time

We preview renowned Irish makeup artist, Nichola Graham’s new book, ‘ÚR Makeup Industry’. Irish make-up artist Nichola Graham’s new book, ‘ÚR Makeup Industry’ will be available to buy in the next couple of months. The book will cover a range of subjects make-up artists need to know about comprehensively. Along with her partner, Mark Totten, Nichola has worked extensively on the subject matter. She is a highly experienced freelance make-up artist, with over 16 years full-time, high-end makeup industry experience. Nichola specialises in airbrush, camouflage, commercial and bridal make-up disciplines. Nichola says: “I thought long and hard about writing this book. I knew it would be a mammoth task and I wasn‘t wrong! We’re bombarded with Facebook groups for make-up artists, MUAs, Irish MUAs, etc. and so much of the information shared and questions answered continues to be incorrect. We are continually seeing new schools, courses and workshops popping up, most of which are irrelevant, a waste of money and nothing more than a get rich quick scheme for those involved. With so many newcomers in the industry, the rules and regulations (they do exist!) were getting muddied up and the art of makeup has become watered down. It’s high time that the how's, why's and what's of the industry are set straight and I know with my experience and knowledge, not to mention industry contacts, I will definitely help to point people in the right direction. Ireland and Northern Ireland has a wealth of talented individuals and established artists. We have amazing cosmetic companies and suppliers, wonderful schools and publications that are on trend and supporting us all. All of us, yes myself included, can focus on the negative. Instead, I decided to focus on the positive and the many options for a fantastic career in an exciting industry. We don't always need to look overseas to discover what's hot and what's not, it's all right on our doorstep!” Go to: www.ur-makeup.com Social Media: Facebook: urmakeup Instagram: @urmakeup Twitter: @ur_ makeup Pinterest: urmakeup

Neck-Lect Jennifer Rock takes a closer look at Free Radicals and Antioxidants What exactly are free radicals and antioxidants? These are terms that are bandied around regularly, yet all too often they’re not fully understood or indeed explained! Life may be for living, but it’s also a full-on free radical “exposure site”. A free radical is a chain of electrons that are unbalanced or unstable – but as with everything in this world, we crave stability, even when it comes to molecules! So when a free radical, aka the unstable molecule, enters the body, it will do anything in its power to become stable, even if that means stealing or feeding off balanced electrons. This creates a domino effect. In a nutshell, then, a free radical is unstable and craves stability – at any cost. The process causes oxidisation, the term that refers to the effect that oxygen has on your body’s organs, and indeed skin. To explain it a different way, think of an apple and the effect that light has on it. If an apple is left peeled on a counter with no protection, within a few minutes, its colour changes to brown. This colour change is due to free radicals causing oxidisation. However, if you sprinkled lemon juice on the apple, although it cannot reverse the process, it can protect the apple from the oxidisation caused by the light. Linking this back to the skin, it is possible

to protect the skin to an extent against the effects of oxidisation but it is not possible to reverse it. Free radicals are everywhere and some are inescapable: Light in all forms – including daylight Stress – a modern-day problem Diet – we are all guilty of eating at least some “cheat” foods Preservatives – essential, yet can cause harm Smoking – depletes your body of essential Vitamin C Pollution – another modernday issue Alcohol – causes inflammation Over exercise – everything in moderation! So what can we do? Much like the lemon juice protects the apple, we can turn to antioxidants to act as a shield against these free radicals. Fruit and vegetables contain tonnes of antioxidants and protect your body, and indeed your skin, from the effect of these free radicals. The more daily habits that you have that cause oxidisation, the more antioxidants you need to consume. Eat a rainbow of fresh produce to give your body a cascade of antioxidants to guard against the ravages of modern life. As I always say: beauty is not skin deep, it starts deep within. Eating your veg is not just good for your health, it’s also an essential tool for defending against premature wrinkles, ageing and sagging in the skin. Your PR In the second part of our Your Business series we chat to Anne Marie Foran, MD of AM Foran PR to get an overview on PR and its benefits What companies do you currently represent? AM Foran PR represents clients across the beauty, health and lifestyle sector including: SkinCeuticals, Fushia Make-up, Thalgo Ireland, HYLO-Tear, BioKult, Revidox +, Vivioptal Junior, Movial Plus, Reform Pilates and many other project clients. How important is PR for a beauty business such as salon? While advertising is one way to promote your business, a positive review from a newspaper, magazine editor and / or blogger is invaluable. Is there a certain amount that you can do yourself? Absolutely. Make sure you keep your social media up-to-date with relevant photos, special offers and competitions. There is no point having a Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account that lies dormant from month to month. You can also approach relevant editors with information about your salon’s key offerings along with an invitation for a treatment for review as well. Just make sure you and your business are ready for that review. First impressions are lasting! What are the no-no‘s of PR? Do not bombard editors / bloggers with endless emails and phone calls. Editors and journalists are inundated with emails, product reviews and internal deadlines of their own. Sending out a daily email will not get you the result you are looking for. Secondly, make sure you respond in a timely fashion

if you are approached by the media. If an editor / blogger is interested in your prices, salon story, would like to book in for a treatment do not leave them waiting. Finally, make sure you have a library of high res imagery (usually higher than 300 dpi) for your business. There is nothing worse than an editor receiving an image that is of poor quality and not editorial ready. Invest in hiring a photographer to take pictures that are ready to go. Is a launch advisable when a business starts out? It really depends on your budget. Many business owners have worked extremely hard to get those doors open and a celebration of that achievement might be something they wish to do. You might choose to host a Grand Opening with local neighbouring businesses, family and friends; while also including an invitation to local radio, print publications and photographers - on hand to take social pictures from the night. This doesn’t have to be a costly affair and it is a good way to introduce your brand to (hopefully) your future customers. A goody bag on departure with an invitation to return either discounted or otherwise, usually has a great uptake and ensures the opening ‘buzz’ continues for weeks to come. Finally, I always advise a ‘dress rehearsal’ to make sure all glitches are worked out as first impressions cannot be overlooked. @AMForanPR www.amforanpr.ie

Copper Queen Give Out We Need to Talk About Copper, says Bronwyn Conroy

Every year there is a new anti-ageing ingredient that steals the spotlight. The star of 2016 is Copper, to be precise copper peptides. Copper peptides have an impressive clinical background going back to the '70s. They have antiinflammatory properties and promote hair growth. They have been used in skincare for the past 20 years. Copper is one of the essential “trace metals” required in small amounts for proper functioning of the human body and its various macro and micro systems, including enzyme systems. Within our cell structure we have the nucleus which is like the brain of the cell and the mitochondria which is like the cell’s battery providing energy. Copper is required in mitochondria for

them to function efficiently and it is also essential for the synthesis of collagen. We need our mitochondria functioning properly to enable our cells to detox efficiently as we sleep. When used in skincare copper helps to develop collagen and elastin and promotes the production of hyaluronic acid. What’s more, when it is teamed with botanical antioxidants it delivers excellent antiageing results reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars and improving the skin‘s elasticity. There is no danger with using a copper enhanced lotion as unlike other heavy metals like silver the risk of toxicity from topically applied copper is very low because it is metabolised by the body.

Liz McKeon looks at how to deal with complaints Do you want a client who has a genuine complaint to become a longterm lifetime client, or the ruination of your business and your career? Even in the best run salons and spas accidents happen, treatments go wrong. Do you have your team trained and the systems in place to effectively deal with that dreaded genuine complaint? How you respond, when this happens, is the difference between having a nasty court case looming over you for the next couple of years and your reputation damaged or retaining that client for life, adding to the bottom line of your business. Complaints must be handled courteously, sympathetically and swiftly. Make sure that your salon has an established procedure for dealing with client complaints and that it is known to all your staff: receptionists, therapists, juniors, part-timers… everybody who is in contact with your precious clients. Notify your insurance provider, by phone immediately. Document the incident in writing for your provider, which will be sent to the insurance company, who will then send you claims forms for completion. Help by showing and offering: Empathy Understand that before you contact the complaining client, you can’t ‘win’. Complaints are really just degrees of losing. Put yourself in the client’s shoes, so that you can get a better understanding of their perspective. Reassure them that you care, understand and are listening to them.

Respect Staying calm sends a message that you have respect for them, and it can be difficult to do this when an angry client is yelling at you. Remember their anger is not about you, they are upset about their situation and are taking it out on you. Apologise Offering an apology, regardless of how you feel or what you can do about the situation, will alleviate some of the stress the client is feeling. Take responsibility If the mistake has been made by a member of your staff, take full responsibility and assist the client so that their problem is solved. Settlement The hard part is the settlement of the complaint and you will have to do some work here. Since you are going to lose something, the degree of loss is up to you. Most likely you will end up giving away product, treatments, full refunds or whatever it takes. You and your client have lost regardless, but you owe it to yourself and your salon to salvage some type of relationship. Try to agree on an equitable solution, where hopefully you will still retain that client for life, thus adding to the bottom line in your business and most importantly, saving your salon’s reputation. The choice is yours – equip your staff with the right procedures necessary to handle upset clients, by arriving at positive solutions or wait for the dreaded claim against your salon to arrive in the post.

Sick… or Skiving? Peninsula Business services looks at the busy absentee

What happens if a member of staff phones in sick but they are later seen out at the shopping centre or down at the pub? Does that mean they're skiving? Not necessarily, ill employees are not always confined to their beds so if another employee sees them out shopping, walking the dog or sitting in a pub it’s worth remembering that not all illnesses incapacitate a person to the extent that they need to stay in bed or remain at home. This is especially true with conditions such as stress or depression. Colleagues are often keen to alert their managers to any perceived inconsistencies between a colleague’s absence and their behaviour whilst off sick, particularly if their own work load has increased as a result. Being able to go and enjoy social events is not necessarily incompatible with an individual being too ill to work. Clearly, you might want to ask some questions of an employee signed off sick due to chronic back pain and being able to run a marathon, gyrate on the dance floor or teach yoga. However, it is unlikely to be reasonable to ask the same employee to explain how they were able to walk around the shops or go out for dinner. Some health conditions may benefit from the individual taking exercise or getting out of the house and the employee may be following their doctor’s advice. Even if you have doubts as to whether someone is genuinely ill, it’s important not to 50•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

accuse someone of lying when you don’t have all the facts. It’s good practice to have in place a procedure that requires all employees to phone in and speak to their manager or a nominated person if they are too ill to come into work even if it’s only for one day. Employees who are absent for over a week, generally have to obtain a note from their GP, which should set out the nature of the illness and how long the employee is likely to be off work. Employers are required to accept a sick note at face value, unless they have convincing evidence that casts doubt on whether the employee is genuinely ill. It’s also good practice to conduct a return to work interview with anyone who has been absent due to ill health after any period of illness. Employees should be asked to explain any inconsistencies between the reason given for their absence and any observed behaviour. Only if an employee cannot give a satisfactory explanation should disciplinary action being taken. Evidence is more likely to be in the form of social media such as Facebook these days, so if an employee says they were too ill to come into work but they posted the fact they went out and got drunk the night before with friends, it is legitimate to ask them about whether their illness was connected with having had too much alcohol the night before.

If in doubt always seek expert HR advice to help minimise the risk to your business. Free call Peninsula Business Services on 1890 252 923 and their experienced advisors will be happy to help.

Hello Dolly BPI chatted to Becky Byrne of newly opened Dolly’s Nails and Beauty in Newbridge, Co Kildare What was the inspiration behind Dolly’s? I've been working in the Nail and Beauty Industry for the last 7 years, I’ve worked in several busy salons and I’ve worked in the distribution end of the industry for the last two years. I’ve always worked for myself alongside working for others. I became a CND Educator three years ago, and I have recently become an Educator for Flirties. I love teaching and helping students to become the best that they can be, but I also love working with clients, getting to know them and what they like, I really enjoy making people feel good. So, I decided last year to start working towards opening my own Nail and Beauty Salon and Training Academy. In April all of my work fell into place in a gorgeous space in Newbridge on the main street, where I opened my first salon, Dolly’s Nails and Beauty. My Training Academy also runs from the same location. Where did you train? Oh God! Where do I start? I completed my beauty training in Crumlin College which was amazing! Crumlin is a fantastic college and I’d recommend anyone interested in beauty to train with them. I trained in different treatments and techniques with I.B.H.T, NSI, ASU, Young Nails, Nail Harmony, Lash Perfect, the list goes on and on, but the best training I have ever received was with CND and Flirties, all my questions were answered, and the products are just a dream to work with from both companies. I have also had the pleasure of being asked to become an educator for both brands after I had completed training with them. Education is so important in our industry, I fly between the UK and Ireland several times a month to make sure that we stay on top of the crowd and keep our techniques and skills up-to-date in the salon! Are the inhabitants of Newbridge openminded about new treatments? Oh absolutely! We do a lot of treatments in the salon that are very new to the area, Lash Lifting, Eyebrow Extensions and 3D Brows just to name a few, along with gorgeous coloured lashes! Our 52•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

clients get as excited as I do when we show them something new, and everyone that has had a new treatment has booked in again for the same treatment, I do a huge amount of nail art and our ladies are all starting to experiment with their nails and mix things up a little, what’s popular for us at the moment is CND Shellac with a Minx accent Nail! Lush! How did you plan the launch of Dolly’s, what were the highs and lows? Oh the planning took a long time! I had previously chosen a different unit to open in, but six months down the line the agency were still looking for more and more information and they wanted to have a huge amount of control over my salon, which I wasn’t prepared to give them, so six months after I started talks with them, I pulled out of the deal. That weekend I found the unit that I’m in now online, met the landlord on the Monday and had the keys on Tuesday morning. It couldn’t have been easier with him! This unit is so much better then the previous one as there is now space for my training academy, which I didn’t have before in the other unit I was looking at. This one is bright, spacious and right in the heart of Newbridge! I love it!

Education & Training

Teaching Matters New Teacher Training Courses - What to Expect New teacher training courses for the FE sector were launched in the UK and are now available in Ireland. Here’s what to expect if you are thinking of enrolling on one, courtesy of Derek O Kelly, education manager at The Waverley Academy and author of Ireland’s first teacher training book for the hair, beauty and fitness sectors. “A new suite of teaching qualifications was launched for the FE sector in the UK and has become very popular for those wanting to train as teachers in the hair, beauty and fitness sectors in Ireland. The new teaching awards, which carry the title “Education and Training”, are mapped into the Irish framework, making them a great option for those wanting to gain a professional teaching qualification in the hair, beauty or fitness sectors. They also have the advantage of been internationally recognised meaning they can be used to travel as well. Here’s a general overview of what to expect if you are thinking of enrolling on an ITEC one.

2. Planning your learning 3. Delivering learning 4. Assessing learning 5. Using resources 6. Evaluating learning 7. Identifying training needs 8. Understanding & managing learner behaviours (1 to 5 mandatory 6 to 8 optional units)

ITEC Curriculum The ITEC level 6 award (Irish framework) contains 5 mandatory units to be accompanied by optional units, which should all total a number of 36 credits. Although different colleges may have different methods of delivery, the following is the general way you could expect the programme to be delivered:

The Classes Classes are normally for a full day (e.g. 10 am to 4.30pm) and incorporate interactive learning, group work, discussion, feedback, teaching practice, and cutting edge teaching techniques. Also included is additional learning beyond ITEC Syllabus such as: The principles of adult learning, Motivational theory, How to become a confident teacher, IT in teaching and training, How adults memorise information, How adults recall information, Educational psychology, Further Education and the Irish context.

Programme Delivery The new teaching award should adapt a blended learning approach combining: classroom based lectures, teaching practice, assignments, and home study/ practice. Much of the learning is assessed internally in a continuous fashion, and on completion, parts of the programme are assessed externally by the awarding body. There are no ‘end of term exams’ required by ITEC for this qualification as most of the assessment is conducted internally. Students should also have to demonstrate their teaching and presentation skills during the programme. Successful completion should also involve approximately 30 hours teaching practice and 10 hours observational practice and submission of assignments Example Of Content & Delivery at TWA The example below is taken from the curriculum and delivery methodologies at The Waverley Academy. The Units The units of study we cover at Waverley Academy are: 1. Roles & Responsibilities 54•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Delivery Methodology Students attend our college one day per month for approx six days. (Normally Sundays or Mondays.) Students will also complete home study and practice such as research, assignments and teaching practice. (Teaching practice is also logged at classes.) Pre Course Reading Students are sent pre-course reading on the fundamentals of what is required to become a great teacher.

Student Resources Student resources include: Ireland’s first teacher training book for the hair, beauty & fitness sectors (published by Waverley Academy and designed to help you with all your course work), online learning system, student discussion forum, and support from our office 5 days a week. Finally You should conduct thorough research before enrolling on a teacher training course to ensure it meets your expectations. It can be a big commitment and standards can vary from college to college. Next ITEC Teacher Training Course The next ITEC Teacher Training Course at The Waverley Academy Dublin venue starts in October. For more information call +353 (0) 1 408 9769 or visit www.academy.ie
