Welcome to the May / June issue of Beauty Professional magazine. We’ve got some great product tips and ideas ahead of the holiday season for your salon in this issue. In addition to the plethora of products on display, we report on the business and staffing related issues affecting your beauty business. Check out our business feature on starting out. Peninsula Business Services informs you about the provisions, you as a business owner, have to make for staff pregnancies. With Father’s Day on the horizon – have you ever given some thought on branching into men’s care or spending more time promoting the service? Everyone wants to look good, and men are no different. But, the stigma associated with men going into a beauty salon for a beauty treatment still exists. We should welcome men with open arms into our salons; specifically targeting them with promotions and treatments that they need. You need to tell them that you cater for both sexes. We cover lots of men’s products and will increasingly endeavour to do so, to fit the growing demand for men’s grooming services in Ireland. I welcome your news and views, and you can email me directly at: editor@beautyprofessional.ie Until next time, Love,

SWEET SQUARED’S SHOWA-THON SUCCESS! This year, Sweet Squared (S2) debuted a new generation of trade shows. The brand new show format was created around the brand’s ’Love and Respect’ ethos and aspirations to create an environment to Connect, Inspire, Surprise and Delight customers, new and existing. The new show format, which launched at Professional Beauty Excel London in February, marked the first time that S2 had not sold product at the show since their first trade show in 2011. Though their waxing and tanning brands Waxperts and MoroccanTan sold online and at the show. “After dedicating the past decade to building a company that provides, without

fail, great customer care it’s fair to say we didn’t like the ’travelling discount store’ connotations of a trade show and wanted to be able to surpass our customers’ expectations. Through evaluating areas that didn’t work for us such as the long queue times, a lack of one-on-one time with

customers, and the exclusivity of show only deals we made it our mission to craft a more personal S2 experience for our customers ensuring they could receive all the benefits with none of the negatives!” - Samantha Sweet, Sweet Squared Co-Founder. Go to: www.sweetsquared.com

DERMALOGICA FOUNDER ON THE COVER OF DIRECTOR Jane Wurwand, Founder and Chief Visionary of Dermalogica and the brand’s social impact initiative, FITE, was invited to be the cover feature on Director Magazine to celebrate International Women’s Day and to bring the message of FITE to their readers. The magazine is sent directly to 40,000 registered company directors, plus a subscriber database of over 10,000. For thirty years since the inception of The International Dermal Institute (IDI) and the Dermalogica professional skin care brand, Wurwand has focused her business on creating professional opportunities and economic empowerment for women. “Micro-entrepreneurs who start their own plumbing business, their own small salon or daycare centre are job creators not job seekers. The UN says we need 600 million new jobs – they’re going to come from small entrepreneurs who are hiring a couple of people,” says Wurwand. “The salon industry helps to put more women into business than any other, women own 64 percent of all salons. They are part of a tribe of micro-entrepreneurs who keep the wheels turning”. In 2011, Jane launched FITE, Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship, to help women entrepreneurs around the world invest in their own potential. Working in more than 70 countries, FITE creates pathways to entrepreneurship by providing access to funding and business resources, supporting education and leadership training for women. To date, FITE has helped to fund more than 75,000 women entrepreneurs worldwide. www.joinFITE.org.

The Rock Report

Neck-Lect Neglect your neck area at your peril! Warns Jennifer Rock

The first areas to visually age are: the eyes, the hands and THE NECK! Oh, how we have forgotten this “drop zone” / “turkey neck” region, which all too often gives the chronological age game away, much to our dismay! What was once a taut, sharp right angle belonging to a chiselled jawline is now a mere slant. So what can we do? Is there a need for a specific neck cream? What age should we start? Why does the neck age faster? The particular ageing process of the neck is twofold: Firstly, sagging muscles are a reality! The platysma muscle is a superficial thin, ropey muscle that covers the front of the neck, stemming from the second rib cage, shoulders, collarbone and right up to the jawline and lower lip region. Its function is to pull the lower lip and side of mouth down and sideways, in other words, this is the muscle you use when you grimace or open the sides of the mouth in surprise! Are you all pulling and distorting your face now as you read? The issue is that, unlike other muscles that attach to ligaments and bones, the platysma is directly attached to the skin and is pulled forward by its own contraction. The platysma shortens and contracts as we age; this becomes visible as a v-shape formation on a mature client as opposed to a smooth flat surface on a more youthful face. In this situation, the muscle itself is sitting away from the skin of the neck. This is an inevitable action, but to help postpone it, many opt for facial exercises, faradic concepts, radio frequency and many modalities. Secondly, skin is losing elasticity. Collagen and elastin are two separate fibres within the skin yet are often misunderstood and explained as one. Both are home to the fibroblast cell, aka the healing factory, as it is responsible for creating both collagen and elastin. These 12•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

proteins are known to be the darlings of the cosmeceutical world, yet their true purpose is to assist in the healing process. Collagen is the framework of the skin and gives the skin strength and plumpness. Approximately 80% of the living layer of the skin is collagen based. Unfortunately, our collagen levels decrease as we age, especially from the age of 30. Elastin and its function is implied in the name, it provides bounce, snap and resilience in the skin. Visualise a new elastic band versus an old battered version, this is not too dissimilar to the effects that occur within the skin. Sunlight and lifestyle choices damage this living layer and cause premature ageing. The light penetrates into this layer daily, weakening and causing destruction within. Another more localised thought is: Perfume! Spraying alcohol-based perfume onto the skin, which is then exposed to light, leads to accelerated ageing, and hyper and hypo pigmented spots. So, what can we do to prevent premature ageing of the skin on the neck? The only true way to treat the skin ageing process is to kickstart and challenge the fibroblast cells. This is only possible through skincare using stem cells, peptides, vitamins, and alpha hydroxyl acids, while also having procedures such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling, etc. Start as soon as possible, ideally by the age of 25 at the latest to prevent rather than rewind. Neck creams in many brands are a marketing tool but if they include ingredients as listed above and have clinical trials to support them, then YES invest in a neck cream as it often needs more TLC than the surrounding areas. Otherwise, include your neck in your regular facial skincare, and look for the ingredients above to help fight the ageing process on both your skin and your neck. Remember, ageing is inevitable but the rate at which you age is questionable.

GLOBAL TRENDS According to Spafinder Wellness 365’s ‘Global Spa & Wellness Trends Report 2016’ there are several global trends that will influence treatments in our spas and salons and the buying trends of our clients over the next few years. There will be a leaning toward ‘technology breaks’ where the phone or tablet is exchanged for the yoga mat and all the family can indulge in relaxing spa treatments. There is also a move toward ‘Well-Fests’ where festivals will shift from hedonism to wellness. Following on from the culture of wellness that we’re moving into, companies are starting to take a vested interest in their employees' mental health and downtime, with spa trips as a definite option. 16•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Lash Season It’s lash season, well all the time, but especially when it comes to the summer. Brides want pretty, no-fuss eyelash extensions. We have some lash tips and tricks for your delectation… 20•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

THE BRIDE’S STORY Recent bride, Sylvia Lato, was a newbie to eyelash extensions. “I don’t have naturally long eyelashes, unfortunately,” she says. “My wedding was coming up and I met a friend of mine for coffee, she surprised me with the most amazing lashes. She told me that it was a process called Russian Layering. So I made an appointment where she got it done, Pretty Woman Beauty Salon in Finglas.”

CUT TO ORDER When clients have a sparse lash line or very weak and thin natural lashes, ellipse lashes are ideal for those clients, as the base is wider (almost as if the extension has been squashed), which can give the appearance of a thicker and fuller set without the weight of a heavier extension. Go to: www.flirties. co.uk

The Wedding Day “I felt I had that added ‘wow’ factor on the day. It was a fabulous day and I got so many compliments on my make-up and lashes. We honeymooned in Iceland for a week and Barcelona for a week - a bit different but my lashes were still staying put for about four weeks. It’s a definite investment!” For more information on training in Russian Layering contact: Baam Cosmetics, +353 (0) 1 450 7573 / +353 (0) 87 242 7510, or email: anne@baamcosmetics.ie

LASH HELPERS Lashes need a little help sometimes. Combinal Magic Lashes Eyelash and Eyebrow Active Serum stimulates the eyelash roots and boosts eyelash growth. Contact: www. beautyproductsireland. com, Tel: +353 (0) 52 613 6433

AFTERCARE TIPS FROM ZACH FALB, INTERNATIONAL TRAINER AT NOVALASH “As our unique adhesive is both water and oil proof, clients are free to return to their usual lifestyle activities. To maintain healthy lashes for longer we recommend regularly cleansing, cleaning and conditioning the lashes with our cleanlash pads. These easy-to-use pads should be applied to the eye area at nighttime to remove make-up and debris from the day. Brushing the lashes morning and night will also help to avoid unnecessary tangling. Our analogy is that lashes are no different to hair extensions, which you would regularly wash, brush and condition. Following aftercare advice and keeping lashes healthy and cared for will not only benefit the client, but it will also make the lash artist‘s work easier when the client comes back for an infill.”

MINK LASH Fuschia’s Mink range are lightweight, soft and luxurious and the band is nice and thin, sitting neatly on the lash line. Contact: www.fuschia.ie, info@fuschia.ie or +353 (0) 41 980 1562

CIDESCO Newsletter

THE CIDESCO WORLD CONGRESS IS COMING TO DUBLIN September 2016 in association with Professional Beauty Ireland The response to our launch article regarding the CIDESCO Congress has been great. And since then we have made even more progress in relation to its organisation.

The promotional event in Bologna was a great success and the Irish Section was represented by Careena & Lorraine Galligan, who were part of a panel who shared a questions & answer session about Beauty and Spa trends in the various countries of the panellists, with a special spotlight on the Irish Congress being hosted here this September. Each discussion group was chaired by Dr. Andrea Bovero, the Italian Marketing Guru who specialises in the Beauty, Spa & Wellness Industry. The feedback has been great and we expect a big delegation from Italy as a result of this.

Day 1 - Thursday the 22nd of September Examiners meeting and welcome party CIDESCO is all about standards in education and part of this culture has been the development of a team of expert examiners who travel the world as external verifiers, ensuring that all CIDESCO therapists meet the very exacting standard laid down by the board and enshrined in the constitution of the organisation. Ireland is very proud to have 7 registered examiners among the 130 global examiners and a meeting of all these examiners forms a very important part of the congress. On Wednesday 21st September the examiners will arrive into Dublin in preparation for the examiners meeting which will take place on Thursday 22nd.

Blackrock College of Further Education (formerly Senior College, Dun Laoghaire) have kindly offered to host this meeting in their wonderful new facility. At that meeting the examiners will address any issues that have been raised globally over the course of the previous year and will agree on a resolution and any new techniques for consideration will be discussed and agreed for implementation. There will be ‘Brain Storming Sessions’ with new ideas for courses and examination procedure debated for submission to the board of education. Examiners will also take part in a form of Peer Assessment and examination to ensure that they remain fully up-to-date with all policies and procedures across all CIDESCO exam platforms. In essence, this ensures they are all ‘singing from the same hymn sheet’ in relation to their role, assuring global recognition of this qualification as the highest attainable, within our profession. Throughout Thursday we expect that there will be a big influx of College Owners, School principals & teachers along with many other therapists and students from the four corners of the globe. To start the celebrations, that evening, there will be a Welcome party in the Intercontinental Hotel, Ballsbridge, which is the official hotel for the duration of the conference. There will be drinks and supper with entertainment provided by Tropical Storm, who are renowned for their laid back style but with an ability to turn any event into a fantastic party. The welcome party is open to anyone who wishes to attend and it is a great chance to re-connect with old friends and meet new ones from all around the world and to network with everyone from the industry.

Tickets

Tickets for this event are €90 and they are available to purchase on the congress website: www.cidescoireland2016.com On the next page you will see a spotlight on two of our speakers and in the next issue we will look at the Friday events and some more speakers so keep following and if you have any questions please send them to CIDESCOireland2016@advantagepco.ie

Anything is possible and to achieve your goals you need only have the correct mind-set. Make sure you don’t miss this lecture! Debra Sadranu is undoubtedly the pioneer, founder and visionary of the Fiji Beauty and Spa Industry, warranting recognition for the outstanding contribution she has made, through the Beauty and Spa Industry, to the Fiji Tourism Industry. Winning the Visionary Aon Excellence in tourism award in 2011 and 2015 Business Women of the year, Debra has provided the Spa Tourism Industry with expertise and recruitment for the past 18 years. Debra prides herself in providing training and employment, creating career paths for thousands of local women. As the Director/Principal of Spa Academy Fiji she introduced a loan scheme to assist students from lower income families for their tuition. Her regard for giving back to the community includes ongoing sponsorship with training to 30 women from Sabeto for Tifajek mud pools, scholarships for grass roots women, training for disabled women, annual pampering for the Lautoka old aged care home, a pet spa range giving royalties to the animal shelter, proceeds to Apimeleki Vakarau a disabled artist, commissioned through Tokani Arts for the artwork on the company’s product packaging. After creating a spa product range formulated and produced in Fiji containing local natural plant and marine extracts; designed for their Academy and local spas, the company has now commenced with exporting internationally. Debra has established village enterprise through the harvesting of local extracts for her product manufacturing. The beneficial seaweeds used for her skin care range are harvested from the Mamanuca region combatting the problem of seaweed overgrowth and related environmental issues. With her latest company expansion, Essence of Fiji – Rejuvenation Centre, providing Fiji’s tourism Industry with a unique spa tourism experience and transit lounge, also housing their Spa Academy and product manufacturing, Debra has taken Spa Tourism to a whole new level that will put Fiji on the map globally.

Dylan Bradshaw

Bride & Fest There are two occasions this season when you’ll be asked to go all out: bridal hair and festivals / events. This year’s Coachella was the epitome of festival fashion, giving you an idea of what clients might be asking you for. Dylan Bradshaw stylist Danielle Dignam is an expert on both. When does the preparation start to get a bride’s hair in condition? Every bride needs nearly as much prep for their hair as for their skin. As their stylist, recommend the best shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. The wrong choice can have a huge impact on the condition, colour and appearance. We also advise our brides-to-be to use hair masks regularly to replace lost moisture – who doesn’t love shiny, healthy hair? We recommend that they have a consultation with their stylist six months prior to the wedding. At this stage, they can discuss what they want to achieve with cut, colour and eventual styling on the day. We can usually achieve their dream hair colour within approximately 6 months or even earlier. Changing your hair colour is best done well in advance so that the client has adequate time to ensure that they’re happy with it. A moisture based treatment will create smooth, strong and easy to manage hair – reducing the need for straightening irons and high hairdryer settings. Hair will be left in the best condition for not only your wedding but most importantly the honeymoon! What are the latest trends in bridal hair? There is actually a refreshing trend in bridal hair where people are no longer following one! More and more we are seeing women opting to go with the best version of themselves on their wedding day – there should be no regrets and this is down to your stylist understanding who you are. There are various types of brides; the Classic, the Boho and the Anti-Bride. The Classic - Brides are certainly reverting to quite a classic look with a modern twist. Hair is either parted or pulled away from the face and into a low chignon using a hair net. We are also seeing a return of the veil as inspired by the dramatic and traditional veil worn by Kim Kardashian. Kim’s hair was kept healthy and shiny. Her stylist left body in the crown but used a wide centre parting with hair simply tucked behind the ears for a very modern look with a retro nod. Think Ali Mc Graw in Love Story. The Anti-Bride - Women are breaking with tradition and are no longer growing their hair for their wedding day. Hair is kept slightly dishevelled while still appearing polished. The key to this look is creating lots of texture and 34•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

movement. This look is a mix between a rebel and the more obvious Hollywood starlet and creates quite a hair moment. Look to brides such as Olivia Palermo or Solange Knowles who went for a more contemporary style. Boho Bride - Gone are the days of extravagant tiaras, overly contrived curls and tightly slicked back buns. The boho bride opts for romantic hairstyles; complete with soft waves, floral accessories, gold adornments and loose hairs softly shaping the face. On the whole, it embraces the natural look of hair. Festival season - is the ideal time to be creative and try something outside of your comfort zone when it comes to styling your hair. Using a combination of knots, braids, and texture will create elaborate, super sleek styles (with no need for electrical hair care tools). The shu uemura ART OF HAIR styling range is ideal for creating such looks as they shape, sculpt and perfect the style, transforming hair texture while still maintaining a natural feel. Festival Look: ‘The Mohican Knot’ About the Look: This look is all about texture, translating what would usually be considered a high fashion knotted Mohawk and adapting it to everyday wear. Prep: This style works best on day old hair which is ideal for festival life. We prepped the hair with Depsea Smoothing Foundation €27, which adds moisture and control to the hair. Style: We took this look section by section, firstly pulling a front section of hair away from the face and knotting, repeating this process until we reached the nape of the neck securing with bobby pins. Knots are pulled, twisted in a distressed way and we are left with wisps of hair, which fall naturally around the face and around the style. Dress: Volume Maker Dust €37 is then brushed through the hair, giving the look height with a lightweight and invisible finish.

Your Business

First Steps What are your hopes and dreams? Do you want to become a beauty industry business owner? Do you have a business idea, or dream of running your own salon / mobile business? You might just be ready to take the next business step. In the first of four parts, BPI tells you what you need to do practically and mentally to get out there. Considerations Being self-employed or starting your own company is a long road. It takes a lot of time and energy. If you’re the type who likes to take risks and feels that you have something to give to the world of beauty then consider as an option. If, however, you’re the type of person who likes to look at their money in the bank every month, then it might suit you better to stay where you are, at least for the time being. The Practicalities Starting a business requires some business acumen. Even if you’re the best nail tech in Ireland you need to do a Start Your Own Business Course. Take a look online and research courses available from your local enterprise board. You can also examine support and grant options. There are a number of issues you need to consider. Different supports and regulations apply, depending on your particular situation. You can set up a business as a sole trader, as a partnership or as a limited company. The type of structure you choose depends on the kind of business you are running, the people you will be doing business with (i.e. clients and suppliers) and your attitude to risk. It is advisable to get the advice of a solicitor

or accountant when considering the structure of your business from the outset. Sole trader Pros: It’s quite easy to set up as a sole trader, so it could suit you if you’re looking to go out as a mobile therapist or as a freelance make-up artist. Cons: If the business fails, your personal assets could be used to pay your creditors. Legal Obligation: You must register as a self-employed person with Revenue. You can trade as your name ’Jane Bloggs’, etc. However, if you wish to use a business name you must register it with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Partnership Pros: Two (or more) people run a business, a working relationship is organised from the outset. If the workload becomes heavy there’s two or more working together. It might suit you to set up a salon with a business partner under a partnership as you can shoulder the burden together. Cons: All partners are jointly responsible if the business fails. There are other possible complications that you should look into. Legal Obligation: The partnership agreement should be drawn up by a solicitor and needs to be registered with the CRO and Revenue. Limited company Pros: The business is a separate legal entity. If the company

40•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

gets into debt, the creditors generally only have a claim on the assets of the company. So personal debt is not pursued. If you were to set up a supply business within the beauty industry, perhaps as a distributor, a limited company could be an option. Cons: The paperwork involved is quite onerous and a limited company should only be looked at if you’re expanding and taking on employees perhaps scaling up from being a sole trader. Legal Obligation: The company must be registered with the Companies Registration Office (CRO) and the company reports and accounts must be returned to the CRO each year.

If it is a company then it is liable for corporation tax. If your business is not incorporated you are considered to be a sole trader and you pay tax under the self-assessment system. Some Good News Starting in 2016, taxpayers earning a self-employed, trading or professional income may claim a new Earned Income tax credit of €550. It is also available for business owners or managers who are not eligible for a PAYE credit on their salary income. If a taxpayer also qualifies for the PAYE tax credit, the combined value of these two tax credits cannot exceed €1,650.

Funding There are loans available to small business start-ups (sole traders included) in Ireland of between €2,000 and €25,000 for commercially viable proposals. Also, since September 2015, under the Microenterprise Loan Fund Scheme 2015, there is no longer a requirement to have been refused credit by the banks. Forms and details of how to apply are available on microfinance.ie.

The Psychology Finally, Take a look at your attributes. Are you brilliant at what you do, have done a Start Your Own Business but you’re low on selfesteem? Then look at doing assertiveness, empowerment or self-development courses. Remember, everyone started out the same. If you look at any successful person they had failures along the way. The difference is that they see bumps on the roads as positive pointers on how to proceed to success.

Tax How your business is taxed depends on whether it is incorporated as a company.

In the next installment we’ll be looking at how to do to promote your business from a PR and marketing perspective.

“Originally from Sweden, I came here in the early millennium, freshly out of art College and eager to attend Make-up for Film and Fashion at IADT. I worked for MAC and Ingot across Ireland for years and I’ve had fantastic opportunities along the way. Film is a passion of mine and I absolutely love being on set. My work was featured on ’Sing Street’, which is in the cinema right now. The most fun I had was working on ’Pop Idol’Sweden’s version of ’Idols’ for two seasons, so many original make-up artists! I also loved the times I worked on the ’TV NOW Awards’, making up the cast of the English and Irish soaps. Apart from my wedding work, I have been lucky enough to be part of numerous shoots for magazines around Ireland, with fantastic

It is vital to keep up on what’s trending in style and fashion if you are in my business, and I have some go-to all-time favourite influences: The make-up work of Sweden’s own Linda Hallberg is amazingly inspiring, and Gigi Hadid’s Make-up artist Patrick Ta does a glowing face like no-one else! Right now I’m excited about and really looking forward to spring/summer of 2016. Human Resources

Mama Time Peninsula Business Services examines Protection Essentials for Pregnant Employees Upon receiving a medical certificate to identify an employee is pregnant, has just given birth or is breastfeeding, it is essential for an employer to be mindful of all their legislative responsibilities. At the forefront, an employer must complete an NEM assessment, to determine any and all hazards which the person in question might be exposed to. This should be reviewed at each trimester. This risk assessment should also factor in, how often the exposure may occur, as well as for how long. Identify – General Hazards to Pregnant Employees Physical force/shocks, vibrations, manual handling, temperature extremes, (non-&) ionising radiation, stress, bullying as well as chemical and biological agents. – Specific Hazards to Pregnant Employees (breastfeeding) Excessive lifting tasks, working underground, lead substances, Rubella exposure, pressurised chambers and Toxoplasma.

even after reviewing protective or preventative measures, alternative work should be provided. If this is not possible, the employer should consider ‘Health & Safety Leave’ for the employee. For the first three weeks of this leave period, the employer must pay the employees’ wages at their normal rate. After this time elapses, the Department of Social and Family Affairs will assess the employee.

Reduce Monitor the employees working ability throughout their pregnancy. Modify the employees‘ working routine and conditions, this will allow for them to still perform at different stages during their pregnancy. Rest facilities (as required by law) must be provided and will help reduce stress. Eliminate When a risk cannot be removed from their role, Employers if you need to carry out a risk assessment in your business and would like some more information. Business Focus

BPI Pros

Nuptial Time Bronwyn Conroy takes a look at the dos and don’ts of forthcoming weddings

Mind Your Money Liz McKeon talks planning, budgets and cashflow www.lizmckeon.com Running a successful salon really boils down to one critical point: making money. Your money will work for you and your business will have enough, more than enough when you give it energy, time and understanding. You need to know about your business financially, it is your responsibility.

The one time in our life when we are open to any treatment, any product and will do literally anything to look our best is prewedding! It is a time when women indulge themselves and tackle skin issues that have been bothering them for years. Everybody wants to look their best on their wedding day. A couple of pre-wedding pointers…. It’s all about skin. A lot of brides make the mistake of focusing on make-up and hair and leaving the skin treatments to the last minute when it is too late. Make-up on your wedding day should not be mask-like. Heavy coverage looks wrong in daylight and simply does not work with a white dress. The

skin should be in optimum condition so that it does not require heavy coverage. The skincare prep should start at least seven months prior to the big day. I would recommend peels, IPL and facials. Follow-up home skincare routines should also be looked at, salon treatments are not enough; it has to be a two-tiered system. So it’s a good opportunity to up-sell products. It’s inevitable that some brides may start to think about injectables. But they should try nothing new just beforehand and I would recommend any of those kind of treatments (if really needed) should be administered eight weeks prior as if anything unsavoury happens there is time to rectify it.

47•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Have enough money from the start. Owning and operating your own salon can be incredibly rewarding. It’s certainly a lot more enjoyable if you can reduce your stress levels by having good financial planning and a realistic approach to how much money it will take to get you to where you want to be. Ensuring that you have enough money to start or buy a business is essential. While you are getting established and building your client base, you will still need to pay for all your fixed expenses, so adequate start-up capital is vital to the survival of your salon. Welcome to reality – Budgets and Planning! A common mistake in business is poor planning and unrealistic expectations in terms of income and expenses. From

my experience the three most common errors are: V underestimating costs, V overestimating how much money will come in, and V failing to recognise that money will be slower coming in than expected. Obviously, the end result of these errors is a serious lack of cash, (or a cash flow problem). Take a realistic approach to budgeting. Don’t plan for the best possible scenario, plan for the worst. If everything turns out better than expected, you will just end up with more money in the bank! Cashflow Income isn’t guaranteed until it is in the bank. Cashflow problems can destroy a business quicker than anything else. When planning for cashflow, always be conservative, allow for slow days and the odd bad debt and have a back-up plan just in case cash flow becomes tight. Setting tight, conservative budgets is a trademark of successful salons and it will certainly make running your business easier. If you find it hard to manage your finances, get advice from someone impartial, such as an accountant. Your business needs to be able to afford to grow and you need to manage that growth. Give value for money and charge what you are worth. Determine what to charge based on your costs, your desired profits, the competition and your unique salon features.

Butterfly Beauty BPI chatted to Aleksandra Pawlak, owner of Butterfly Effect, a permanent make-up and beauty salon that has recently relocated to Rathfarnham Village What’s your business ethos and background? We offer a variety of permanent make-up procedures for eyebrows, eyeliner and lips. We also offer a wide range of professional beauty treatments. I’m a skilled Cosmetologist with ten years’ experience in the beauty industry, I have an endless number of certifications and courses under my belt. I’m always excited to learn about new beauty products and treatments so that I can pass them onto our clientele. Permanent make-up is a highly skilled, intricate procedure. It also requires artistry and an eye for detail. I am dedicated to the client, I need to create perfect, affordable results to get return business. Butterfly Effect is now a well-recognised beauty salon with over 1,000 very satisfied clients, all of whom have received the salon’s professional permanent make-up application. We believe that quality and service shouldn’t cost a fortune and that is why our prices are some of the best in Ireland. The majority of our clients are from Dublin, but we have clients travelling to our salon from other Irish cities as well as Northern Ireland and the UK - just to get perfect brows, eyes and lips. Permanent makeup is a big step to take and you need to know that you’re in the right, gifted hands. Whether they prefer a natural look, or a very glamorous look, each procedure we do will be tailored to meet the client’s personal needs. We also run a Permanent Make-up Academy, where we teach the Microblading Method and traditional permanent make-up method. We provide one-to-one training, because we want to devote 100% attention to our students. It’s very important for my protégées to get it right! My raison d’etre is always centred on the client and the outcome of their treatment. I adore my work; I love receiving the nice feedback on the procedures I carry out. I have been passionate about beauty since an early age and it’s a dream come true to be able to impart both my knowledge to students, and my beauty enhancing capabilities to clients. 52•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

1 The Butterfly Effect team

You recently relocated your salon to Rathfarnham Village. How is business going? Yes, we opened in Rathfarnham Village since February 2016 and since we moved here we are almost fully booked. Butterfly Effect Beauty Salon exists for last four years, so the clientele move with us and now we’re gaining new local clients. Rathfarnham Village is an intimate and quiet place where our salon can be easily found. There is a plenty of parking spaces around, which is especially important because our clients come from all over Ireland. As well as permanent make-up we also do: V Wrinkle Fillers – Shireen Poring Method V Micro-Needling Mesotherapy V Facial Treatments and Microdermabrasion V TCA Peels and Fruit Acids Treatment V Shellac Nails and Eyelashes and Eyebrow Tinting V Body Massage and Body Waxing and more.. How long did it take to set up the salon, from decor to staffing? Refurbishing the place took us around two weeks. That was a lot of work to do. We decided on the decor before we moved. Our salon colours allude to colours in our logo and website. It’s a luxurious look. We added diamond as well because we believe “diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” In Butterfly Effect we employ highly-skilled and experienced personnel. I have to say I have a great team of girls; they’re amazing, and on this occasion I want to say to them: Thank You!

A Good Plan

As part of his Teaching Matter series Education Manager of the Waverley Academy, Derek O’Kelly talks about Planning – one of the great secrets of teaching adults Good planning is a key attribute of great teachers and is essential for the smooth running of your classes. Your knowledge of the subject you are teaching and its underpinning syllabus will be crucial. As you get into the finer details of the class plans and content, your teaching philosophy should shine through in their design. But it’s important not to lose sight of the aims and outcomes of what you set out to teach. In other words, what your learners should know or be able to do at the end of the class. Crucial to this process will be how you measure if learning has occurred. And here’s one of the great secrets to this: make sure that your plan includes more input from your learners than it does from you. In fact, the experts tell us that your plan should be approx 75% ‘student doing’ and just 25% ‘Teacher doing’. In other words, for every hour you teach, student input or activity should be 35 minutes. That said, your plan should be designed to get you from A to B with measurable outcomes along the way. The following are some guidelines for planning your learning: V Plan your learning in tandem with how adults learn V Plan your learning so learners will be active and engaged V Devise methods to motivate learners and build rapport 54•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

V Design your class plans so that learning can be measured V Present and illustrate content logically, concisely, and in simple terms V Organise and structure content appropriate to the level of the course V Plan variety in your teaching style e.g. talk, listen, sit, stand and move around. V Incorporate a variety of visual aids. V Plan opportunities for questions and group work V Prepare challenging questions V Allow time for discussion and feedback V Encourage learners to take an active role in their learning Summary Planning is an essential element of great teaching, and teaching plans using a variety of methods will go a long way to achieving a “catch all” approach. Planning and delivery should include order, structure, creativity, group work, visuals, concrete examples, verbal reinforcement and practical exercises. In essence, the message for tutors is to incorporate as much variety as possible when planning your classes. And make sure your plan includes more activity and input from your learners than it does from you.
