Editor's Note Dear Readers, Welcome, once again, to another fantastic issue of your Beauty Professional Magazine.

The beauty industry in Ireland is a constantly evolving one and we're here in 2016 to keep you up to date with training, retail treatments, products and equipment that will help you make the right decisions for your beauty or hair business. We chat to Gillian Moore-Brady - the Irish innovator behind Fuschia make-up, and we learn how to deal with an employee who goes out sick after their leave has been denied. Check out page 50. Sugar has been getting a bit of bad press recently, with comparisons to the tobacco industry! But how does it affect your skin? Bronwyn Conroy reports on page 51. Finally, we in BPI HQ were very sad to hear of David Bowie's departure from this earth. He was an inspiration not only musically, but through his fashion, hair and make-up. He ignited a fashion revolution in the 1970s with his futuristic 'out of this world' looks and glam hair and make-up styles. He was a true individual who touched us all in some way. As a tribute on page 26 our in-house MUA contributor, Maria Malone-Guerbaa has graced us in this issue with a showpiece attributed to the icon who inspired so many in our industry. I hope you enjoy this issue and I welcome any news you would like the world to know about! Oh, and Happy St. Patrick's Day and 1916 Centenary celebrations! Until next time, Love,

The Rock Report

The A Bomb Jennifer Rock examines the world of Vitamin A. Back in 1913 two biochemists working at the University of Wisconsin discovered a fat-soluble nutrient they named Vitamin A. It’s hard to be deficient in this plentiful vitamin if you live in the western world, as it’s readily available in dairy products and meat. However, its deficiency (unfortunately very common in the developing world) can cause sight problems. In the world of skincare, with every article promoting any given concept there is another that quickly provides a counteracting argument. This is not the case with Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a law all to itself - adored, respected, researched and endorsed by all professionals ranging from GPs, dermatologists to facialists. So to recap: Vitamin A presents in the skincare-loving forms of retinol or retinyl palmitate. Both are antioxidants, however, retinol is more potent. When applied to the skin retinol is converted into retinoic acid. Retinoic acid basically tricks the skin into becoming youthful again. It resurfaces the skin, softening wrinkles, making fine lines disappear. It is a common denominator ingredient in over the counter, salon, cosmeceutical - and clinic products alike It is not experiencing a fad or craze or experiencing a short-term marketing campaign. It simple is the Holy Grail is dubbed the bestkept secret in skincare to guarantee true results. Why? For whom? You may ask? The simplest answer may be to question: why not? What skin 12•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

type is it not for? The reality is that to cause any physical and visible changes within the skin you need Vitamin A. This fountain of veritable youth comes in many formats and carries some unfortunate misconceptions with it Many hear the term Vitamin A and automatically presume it thins, sensitises, causes excessive shedding, and the negative list goes on. There are plant, fat, alcohol and acid forms. Not all formats have the same response within the skin. I think it is important to note that we all have Vitamin A within us, light depletes it; so by applying it topically we are merely pumping back into the body what it has inside it. Everyone’s ability to easily absorb the vitamin varies, and as a result respect and patience is needed in order to acclimatise steadily and readily to this key ingredient. If you have pigmentation, acne, scarring, rosacea or ageing clients who wish to truly repair the skin from within and you wish to give them the best opportunity to have beautiful skin - then opt for Vitamin A.

A King of Beauty Ever wonder what it takes to go out on your own as a beauty business owner? BPI caught up with Claudine King of the recently opened ‘Claudine King Brows & Beauty’ on South William Street to find out Where did you train originally? I began my career 11 years ago at the renowned Bronwyn Conroy Beauty School in Dublin - where I received my Diploma from the Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (CIBTAC). Further qualifications were awarded through training at Make Up For Ever and The MakeUp Room. I have attended many courses to hone my skills, including: Chleo Enterprises Training School, French Cosmetics Ltd. and CND. I have secured advanced techniques with waxing, facials, YUMI lash perming, CND Shellac and Gelish nails. What is your business ethos? To provide exceptional service to our very important clients. We understand that no two sets of brows are the same and there is never a “one-shape suits all” when it comes to perfecting a sculpted and well-groomed brow! Our customers experience the very best of precision threading, giving the cleanest results with that “mini-facelift” feeling. Our therapists are highly-qualified brow specialists with extensive knowledge, offering the very best of treatments. When did your new salon open and what‘s the 'bread and butter‘ of the business going to be? We opened on 1st December 2015 and I’m delighted 20•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

to say that we’ve been busy since day one! The most popular treatments at the salon are brow threading, tinting and facial hair removal. The ability to provide painless threading is just one element that makes us stand out from the crowd. We also use a customised blend of tinting products to suit each individual hair colour, finishing the brows beautifully. How much market research did you carry out before opening your business? I have extensive market knowledge from my background working in Dublin salons for the past number of years. South William Street is an excellent location as it’s so accessible and so once I found the perfect home for Claudine King Brows & Beauty, I knew there would be no stopping us! What did you consider when drawing up your business plan? There were many considerations when drawing up the business plan. We needed to establish our customer base, secure in the knowledge that we had the perfect location, talented and dedicated staff offering a world-class service. I was meticulous about every detail of the brand and I am very lucky to work with an extremely talented bunch to get the business up and running.

A Gift Given

BPI takes a look at David Bowie’s gift to the world of beauty, while showcasing World-renowned MUA, Maria MaloneGuerbaa‘s tribute to the star Born on the 8th of January 1947, David Robert Jones changed his name to the more memorable ‘David Bowie’ when he embarked on his professional career as a musician in 1963. It was in the 1970s that Bowie‘s career really came to fruition after the release of ‘Space Oddity’ in 1969. After that followed ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’. The ‘70s also marked the start of his reinvention from a fresh-faced youth into his alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust. Bedecked in clothes and make-up never before seen by the public eye he was the epitome of androgenyous glam-rock chic. While other glam-rock bands were on the 26•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

mediocre side and fell by the wayside, Bowie went on to be a huge figure in popular music for over five decades, and was considered by both critics and musicians as an innovator. During his lifetime he sold an estimated 140 million records worldwide. So whether your favourite single is 1980’s ‘Ashes to Ashes’ or 1983’s ‘Let’s Dance’ or the wonderful ‘Space Oddity’ or if you simply loved his style, you will have to agree that the world is definitely a less-interesting place without him!

MAKE-UP ARTISTS PAY TRIBUTES TO DAVID BOWIE: Using the Kryolan brand Maria Malone-Guerbaa created these tributes to Ziggy Stardust. Maria says: “David Bowie was such an influence on everyone in the music world. He had that brilliant talent and ability to reinvent himself over and over. He was unique - a great loss.” “Bowie was and always will be the definition of creativity,” Nichola Graham of Ur MakeUp. “Make-up Artists around the world owe

David Bowie a huge debt. By associating with some of the most talented MUAs in the industry early in his career, he shone a spotlight on what we do and gave huge credibility to our work as well as some great iconic imagery. Bowie didn‘t just

inspire trends - he created a movement of young people ready to explore and see the world in a different way. He made androgyny acceptable, accessible and exciting,” Chris Rowan, Make-up Artist, Make Up For Ever.

Fuschia Blooms

BPI Editor, Lucy Earley, chats to Gillian Moore-Brady, founder of Fuschia MakeUp What does 2016 have in store for Fuschia? 2016 is set to be another very exciting year for all of us at Fuschia Make-Up. Over the next few months we are expanding across the business in a number of ways. We will be moving into our purpose built warehousing facility, which will include our management offices and a training centre. We are thrilled to be in the process of acquiring more retail locations and on the back of that will be expanding our rapidly growing team. Along with new products being launched, we are also working closely with connections we have made abroad; developing relationships with international distributors. All-in-all a very exciting year ahead! What‘s your latest product launch? We have recently launched, with a hugely positive response from customers and the press, our Signature Brush Collection (15 piece set) as well as Mink Lashes (pictured above) and a gorgeous contour collection called Megan’s Face Kit (pictured on the right). In the coming months we will also be launching new shadow collections that will excite all Fuschia Make-Up beauty fans! How do you balance family and work life? I’ve just had my third child and going from two to three children is a juggling act to say the least! I’m sure it is all to do with the amount of hands I have! The kids are great and family comes first. I am very fortunate to have a great team of people around me. My management team are incredible and I have really learned to delegate over the last few months. That, coupled with super childcare, means that I can spend time in the office and know that the kids are 28•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

well cared for. That’s not to say that I’m not walking around with matchsticks in my eyes at the moment from the night feeds! But I wouldn’t be without either. Fuschia is most certainly my fourth child. Do you think the industry is making somewhat of a recovery? Absolutely, we are so fortunate to have had exponential growth since we began, but 2015 was a super year for business both in retail and wholesale. I am more than confident that 2016 will continue to be a year of growth for all of us at Fuschia MakeUp and we look forward to growing our relationship with both new and old customers around the country.

Front Cover Feature

Cover Story BPI Editor, Lucy Earley, recently chatted to award-winning hairdresser Dylan Bradshaw and his salon and academy educator Cathal Walshe to discuss the Dylan Bradshaw vision of education and training in the ever-growing hairdressing Industry courses are fantastic but can you use them dayto-day in your salon? We recently developed a course in the Dylan Bradshaw Academy 'Cutting for your Client' for this reason. I truly believe that even the most talented hairdresser is capable of losing a client with poor consultations and by not listening to want their client really wants. 'Cutting for your Client' provides Stylists with the necessary consultation skills as well as the tips, techniques and inspiration needed when introducing a trend - which can be easily styled and maintained confidently at home.

Cathal Walshe, Artistic Educator @ The Dylan Bradshaw Salon & Academy

Dylan Bradshaw, Owner and Creative Director of Dylan Bradshaw salon & academy When and why did you establish the Dylan Bradshaw Academy? The db Academy was something I had always wanted as I was frustrated with the lack of high quality and professional hairdressing courses in Ireland. In 2012, we opened the doors of the db Academy in a state of the art premises at 56 South William Street, Dublin 2. Daily, I work with an exceptional, experienced, highly-trained and artistic team. Their talent and drive keeps our salon at the forefront of Irish hairdressing. My belief and passion is that ongoing education is the foundation for a successful career in hairdressing. I want beginners to hairdressing to receive the best training - so we went the extra mile to develop superior course content, aligning selected modules with field leaders so students are learning the most up-to-date techniques from the best in the business, and for this we were accredited by City & Guilds. What will hairdressers learn who attend one of your courses? Our Academy offers various creative-led courses, but as a salon owner I would be very strategic in what courses I personally choose for my team. You need to look at your choices long term to determine what value it will bring back to the business. Trend and Catwalk themed 34•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

What advice would you give to someone thinking of embarking on a career in hairdressing? To wear comfortable shoes! But seriously if someone was thinking of a career in hairdressing I would highly recommend it. Hairdressing is increasingly seen as a very attractive career option for school leavers, mature students or professionals looking for a change. It is an exciting and portable career that affords many options from working in a salon, film, television or indeed establishing a business. How important is ongoing training and education? Once you have qualified and are in full-time employment, don’t let your education stop there. Remember to invest in yourself and your future, keep up-to-date on cutting and colour techniques, new treatments or services as that hunger for growth and personal development will get you very far in this business. We have developed courses in the Academy to help you throughout your career in hairdressing - from our 18-Month City & Guilds Certified Diploma in hairdressing for beginners to PreGraduation Finishing Schools for 4th Year Apprentices and part-time courses in cutting and colour for qualified stylists. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? There's so much I enjoy about my job as a part of the creative team and as a db educator. Personally, the most rewarding and therefore enjoyable aspect is having the opportunity to work with our students and apprentices as they grow and develop during course term.

Training Time Cathal Walshe, Educator at Dylan Bradshaw Academy talks about studying at the db Academy

I work as an Educator in the Dylan Bradshaw Salon & Academy. I thoroughly enjoy the role as I have a real love for teaching and helping people develop their skill. I am also a part of the Dylan Bradshaw Creative Team. I would highly recommend a career in hairdressing. It offers many career paths that you can go down, from working in a salon, to developing into a freelance artist; working in education and training to editorial work - the list is endless and can be combined in many different ways. Starting with the basics, at the db Academy our educators will bring students step-by-step through the different aspects of hairdressing and the industry itself. The City & Guilds syllabus includes units such as health and safety practice, client consultations, retail and professional product knowledge, cutting, colour and styling etc. Students are continuously assessed through City & Guilds with both practical observations and online testing. The db Academy is already offering an internationally recognised qualification with the City & Guilds Level Two Diploma in Hairdressing and we are constantly developing our course options and content to elevate that standard. The db Academy offers extensive work experience opportunities for the students. All aspects of working as a hairdresser are taught and students get work experience in these different areas. The work experience complements the training modules and the students gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. During course term we provide scheduled work placement days in the Dylan Bradshaw salon. This will occur at different stages of the course, as your skills develop, so students will experience salon life as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Year Trainee. Work experience is not restricted to the salon environment. For example, we have collaborated with Dublin City University (DCU) on their annual fashion show, Shave or Dye, The Dublin Festival of Fashion Look book which was featured in over 40,000 copies of the Daily Mail, The Persil Irish Fashion Awards, 14 and various other shoots and 38•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

shows. Working on these projects allowed our students to work to a brief, creating looks and styles to match that brief and to work under pressure. Time management was key to the success of each of these collaborations. This type of experience is invaluable and may not be available elsewhere. We have recently introduced an 'End of Year Graduation Photo shoot' to our curriculum. Students have the opportunity to work with a professional photographer to shoot two different editorial looks. The hairdressing industry is currently experiencing a skills shortage – not just in Ireland but worldwide. Internationally, hairdressers who have been trained in Ireland or the UK are in demand because the standard of training is so high. The db Academy City & Guilds qualification is internationally recognised, making securing a hairdressing job internationally more achievable and allowing graduates to travel with their new qualification and skills. Hairdressing is an amazing career. It is a creative and technical skill and so isn’t just for one type of person. The beauty of the hairdressing industry is that there is such a variety of personalities, styles and individuals. It is our job at the academy to nurture talent to help our students become the hairdressers they want to be. To be a great hairdresser, you must be willing to keep on top of trends and be willing to refresh your skills and keep up-to-date with the latest techniques and treatments. Constant education and refresher courses are vital. Depending on how driven and diligent a person is, there are opportunities for someone to take their career to the next level, open their own business or develop and manage their brand. Seeing students progress from barely being able to hold a scissors and comb, to the completion of some beautiful haircuts at the end of the course term is so rewarding. Once you have qualified and are in full-time employment, don’t let your education stop there. Remember to invest in yourself and your future. Growth and personal development will get you very far in this business.

CIDESCO Newsletter

THE CIDESCO WORLD CONGRESS IS COMING TO TOWN! “Ladies and Gentlemen. For the first time in the history of our beautiful profession we come together in Brussels as beauty specialists from different countries to establish an International Committee of Esthetics and Cosmetology,” Georges Dumont. The suggestion for this meeting was the dream of Jacques Poirsons, teacher of Esthetiques in Paris. This first meeting of international beauty therapy representatives, which took place on 27th December 1946 attracted people from Belgium, France, Holland, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland and Sweden. Having been founded in Brussels, its headquarters are located in Zurich, Switzerland. Comité International d’Esthétique et de Cosmétologie – CIDESCO, is the World Standard for Beauty and Spa Therapy. Membership is open to the leading schools, colleges, beauty centres of the world, qualified CIDESCO therapists, and students looking to achieve a superior level of training and the CIDESCO Diploma qualification which is recognised worldwide. The goals set at that time remain the same today although the scope of their training has broadened as the industry has grown but the core values remain the same: V Establish and uphold the highest standards of Beauty and Spa therapy throughout the world. V Promote Aesthetics on an international basis. V Promote the exchange of professional knowledge, new developments and information through regular marketing activities, networking events and at our annual international Congress. V Create recognised training centres that lead to the CIDESCO Examination and CIDESCO Diploma. Each country where CIDESCO is offered has its own ‘Section’ which upholds the standards and constitution of this global organisation. 44•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

CIDESCO was first introduced to Ireland in 1979 and since then it has established itself as the leading qualification in the field of Beauty & Spa Therapy with 27 accredited colleges, training Therapists to the highest International standards and is the most sought after qualification in our industry and many salon owners will seek to employ only, CIDESCO qualified therapist. The Irish section are very proud to announce that in September of this year, the CIDESCO World Congress is coming to townDublin Town to be specific. At the 2014 congress held in Athens, CIDESCO Section Ireland bid to host the 2016 Congress with the support of Failte Ireland and the Dublin Convention Bureau. They were successful in winning the bid to bring this internationally renowned event to Ireland and have been busy organising what promises to be The Event of the Year, on the Irish Beauty Calendar. Titled ‘Into the Deep’ the theme of the congress is to explore the deeper levels to which therapies and we as therapists are now working, as well as exploring the guidelines and ethical issues that arise as a result of this. There will also be a number of leading national & international medics who work in the area of Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery and they will look at the relationship between themselves and the Beauty Therapist along with the various pre & post-operative procedures and treatments that we can and should perform, as well as the importance of

creating stronger and closer ties between the professions and services that we offer. The Congress, which starts on 22nd September, runs over 5 days and will attract therapists from all over the world. An amazing program of events has been organised as part of this and such is the expectation for the gathering of these therapists, that Professional Beauty has teamed up with Section Ireland and will now run its Dublin exhibition in association with the CIDESCO congress. Professional Beauty are predicting that this will be the most successful Irish exhibition ever, as many leading International Brands who do not normally exhibit here, have booked to do so. Such is the level of interest in it, that the organisers of the famous BOLOGNA trade exhibition have agreed, along with section Italy, to allow section Ireland two enormous promotional events amongst its many global exhibitors, to encourage them to visit Dublin in September and partake of the congress. Over the coming issues of Salon Ireland we will be putting the spotlight on some of the amazing speakers that have been secured to present at this fantastic congress as well as revealing more about the various events that will be taking place, what you might like to attend and how to book for any of these. Watch this Space! For more information go to: www.CIDESCOireland2016.com

BPI Pros

Spoon Too Far Retail 101 The attack on the deleterious effects of sugar is in full swing. Bronwyn Conroy looks at what it does to our skin too We know that sugar affects our waistline, but now we are hearing that it ages our skin too. Actually, it not only ages our skin but causes breakouts, rashes, redness and on a more serious note - lines and wrinkles! The blame lies with a process called Glycation. The sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful molecules called AGEs (advanced glycation end products). The more sugar you eat the more AGEs you develop. What do these AGEs do? They damage our skin proteins, namely our collagen and elastin, which are protein fibres. Collagen gives our skin a wavy, smooth appearance and elastin gives our skin its extension and recoil ability. AGEs make our collagen and elastin dry and brittle, they also deactivate the body's natural antioxidant enzymes leaving the skin more vulnerable to sun damage. The good news is – it’s never too late to turn back the clock, one way is to build new collagen with creams that contain retinol. Retinol is a key player in our anti-ageing arsenal, it improves blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles and works to thicken up our skin making it more resilient.

However, at the end of the day we all need to cut back on the sugar in our diet, which is easier said than done. There is a lot of hidden sugar in food; most pre-prepared foods are laden with sugar. It is important to check all the nutritional labels to check on the sugar content. We still need a little sweetness though and Xylitol is a good sugar alternative. Xylitol, looks exactly like white sugar and despite its chemical name is made from birch tree sap. It’s a sweetener that is absorbed more slowly than sugar, in fact it's not even completely broken down in our system and so eliminates the sugar rush! It is good for your teeth and lowers the instances of ear ache in children. It is also a prebiotic so it encourages good gut flora, making it a great option for candida sufferers. Xylitol has the same sweetness as sugar but only a 1/3 of the calories. Another alternative is Stevia, which is derived from the stevia plant. Stevia has no calories and is 200 times sweeter than sugar, it has also shown to have health benefits such as reducing blood pressure. Check out some recipes online that use these alternatives to both sugar and synthetic sweetners like aspartame. Advise your clients to cut down on sugar, if not for their weight then definitely for their skin.

50•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

If you need some pointers on best retail practice, take Liz McKeon’s advice! Regardless of space, a well-stocked retail area will strengthen your identity. It creates awareness of your products and begins to help plant a seed that can develop a desire to buy. There is unlimited potential to increase turnover and improve cashflow within the business by focusing on and increasing retail sales. This sales process will have a positive impact on figures, increasing both overall turnover and staff commission. However, the approach to display and merchandising of retail products can be quite poor and is sometimes overlooked in beauty salons. You have so much technical knowledge, why lose sales to local retail outlets, such as pharmacies and supermarkets, just because you haven’t given enough thought and attention to effective merchandising? Merchandising refers to how products are categorised and grouped together to enhance them and encourage customers to buy. Effective merchandising views selling from the customer’s point of view, and since a huge percentage of purchases are made on impulse, merchandising strives to make purchasing products as easy as possible for the customers, while increasing profits for the business. Stock Levels: V Revise and re-examine all your stock levels V Make sure you have your best sellers in stock V If you are out of stock of an item, communicate this to all staff, so they don’t

recommend a product you don’t have in stock at the time. V Place regular small orders until you have your stock levels correct. V Make sure you have enough, but don’t tie money up in stock that isn’t selling. Remember these three elements Products: according to your market, are the right product types and brands present in the point of purchase display? Position: location – are the products placed in the ideal location in the client traffic flow? Are products in the right section, in order with market leaders, and in order of package size? Are the products rotated to keep stock up to date? Presentation: pricing – are the products clearly priced? Do you use point of sale materials strategically? Are the products and shelving clean and attractively displayed? Next, to Increase Your Sales: V Know your stock inside out, such as stock in hand, available delivery times and advertising schedules and promotions. V Look busy and successful. Make sure to display any awards, mementos, photos and testimonials that allow clients to see the true professionals they are dealing with. V Remain upbeat and positive – the confident atmosphere with which you carry yourself will go a long way towards creating a buying ambience. Go to: www.lizmckeon.com

Education & Training

How Adults Learn In an extract from The Waverley Academy teacher training book 'A Guide To Teaching For Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy Or Fitness', author Derek O’Kelly talks about the subject of how adults learn The key findings of how adults learn provide essential reading for teachers and trainers in further education. The findings follow many decades of research and practice from the fields of philosophy, psychology and more recently, science. They provide us with insights for planning and delivery of adult learning, and would indicate that learning should be designed and delivered in a way that engages, respects and caters for the needs of adult learning styles. They provide us with a fascinating challenge that is very different than ‘traditional’ methods of teaching. Here are some of the key findings: V adults learn differently than children V they have different learning styles V they have different motivations for wanting to learn V their motivations can be crucial to the learning process V motivations that are intrinsic (e.g. learning because they want to learn) are more likely to lead to positive learning outcomes V they like to be engaged and active in their learning V they respond well in an environment where their needs and prior experiences are respected V they like opportunities to discuss, reflect and clarify subject matter V they like opportunities to collaborate and problem solve 52•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

V they respond well to self-direction and responsibility V they respond well to multisensory learning methodologies e.g. visual, audio, kinesthetic V they have life experience/s upon which to draw that can be valuable to the teacher V they have a significant ability to serve as a knowledge resource to the trainer and fellow learners V they may have low levels of self-esteem and confidence, which can impact on their learning V they may have had negative prior learning experiences, which may result in feelings of inadequacy, or fear of study and failure V they respond well to structure, organisation and ‘ground rules’ Summary Understanding how adults learn will have a significant impact on your role as an effective teacher in adult education. It will enable you to design and deliver learning in tandem with modern day practice and will ultimately lead to a successful and rewarding teaching career. The Waverley Academy is currently enrolling for the new ITEC teacher training qualification and is also providing conversion courses for those who have legacy teaching awards. THE WAVERLEY ACADEMY

This year BeautyBoard is set to launch Ecuri Brows Stem Cell and Scalp Pigmentation Training into the UK and Ireland. Stem cell activation is a technique that promotes your own natural hair growth. It is known that there are stem cells left in every hair shaft, even when there is no hair growth or even hair follicles. Tiny needles are inserted into the hair shaft and stimulate these stem cells. Results will be improved when special growth factors are used. Micro Scalp Pigmentation by Ecuri is a specialist procedure where a medical grade pigment is inserted into the upper layers of the scalp. This simulates a natural-looking, tightly shaven head, or gives the impression of a higher density of hair in people wearing their hair longer. It‘s a simple and non-invasive solution for both males and females suffering from hair loss, pattern baldness, thinning hair, alopecia and many other medical conditions causing hair loss. For more information on training with www.beautyboard.ie, Tel: +353 (0) 45 944 751

CPD FOCUS - BRONWYN CONROY We profile The Bronwyn Conroy Beauty School‘s view and experience of Continual Professional Development in the beauty industry, hanging out with celebrities along the way! Bronwyn Conroy has a name that‘s synonymous with high quality. The school has found that more and more therapists who seek to train with them are insisting upon actual accredited courses. When a therapist invests time and money in their Continual Professional Development they want to ensure that their choice of college offers fully qualified tutors and qualifications, which are recognised should they decide to travel or move abroad for a period of time. “We are increasingly finding that salon owners and therapists who are dedicated to standards are more than willing to spend the extra time and make the financial sacrifice to train with a smaller group. Even perhaps for a longer period of time to ensure that they leave us feeling confident and ready to offer the treatment to their clients,” says Claire Heffernan, Sales Manager of Bronwyn Conroy. “We are in the business of teaching beauty since 1972 that‘s 44 years of experience and knowledge that we include in any course that we run. We are constantly looking to the future,” says Anna Keely, owner of the School. “Suzanne Egan, my Business Development Manager and I are excited as we‘re due to participate in Excel in London on the 29th of February and at COSMOPROF in Bologna on the 19th

Human Resources

Request Denied Peninsula Business Services examines how to deal with employees who go sick after their leave request is declined When considering the various types of leave that can cause administrative and operational headaches for employers, it’s often standard sickness absence and absence without leave that are the main culprits. However, another type of absence, which is becoming more prevalent is unauthorised absence when this same period of requested leave has been previously denied by the employer for operational reasons. Who doesn’t remember the somewhat comical story last year of Paul Marshallsea who hit the news headlines worldwide after heroically saving a group of children on an Australian beach by wrestling a lurking shark? What the media didn’t know at that time was that Mr Marshallsea was supposed to be on sick leave from work and upon reading the headlines he was promptly dismissed by his employer upon his return to the UK. Given the difficult economic climate faced by many employers in recent years, it is often the case that minimum staffing levels are in place and as such, ability to grant leave can be limited giving the need for cover over certain periods and the need to ensure adequate staffing at any given time. It is therefore often the case that employers have to deny annual leave requests for reasons such as this, which can in turn lead to a disgruntled employee taking this time off anyway in the form of sickness absence or going ‘AWOL’. Prevention is Better than Cure – Effective Company Policies It is commonly phrased that “prevention is better than cure” and in cases such as this, the first step to managing and avoiding such an issue is ensuring that you have a clear and unambiguous policy of annual leave in the employee’s contract accompanied by clear guidance on the process for the requesting/granting of annual leave in the employee handbook. This should include information and guidance regarding the forum through which leave should be requested. The Peninsula Advice Service advises that, at minimum a formal ‘annual leave request form’ should be submitted by employees, detailing the dates requested and importantly the date the request was made. Many employers may have their own internal systems where these requests can be made electronically. Either way it is important that leave is requested through a formal and common method ensuring the relevant information is captured in the request. Employers should ensure a timely response to an employee request and if the request has been refused clear reasons for this should be given. It is imperative that Employers operate a fair system of allocation of leave e.g. first come, first served and ensure this is adhered to. Showing that you do not operate favouritism or undertake unfair practices when allocating leave will assist in preventing employees to become disgruntled and unreasonable if their annual leave request in refused. Crucially, many employers and industries have specific periods 56•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

each year when they know they are going to be very busy (e.g. retail industry at Christmas). As such, employers should not hesitate to state those busy periods in their Annual Leave policy in the Employee Handbook so that employees are under no illusions from the outset that they will have annual leave requests during this period approved. What if an Employee Goes AWOL? If you feel that a disgruntled employee is likely to take unauthorised leave following a declined request, it is important that action is taken in advance of this actually occurring. The employee’s line manager should have an informal meeting with them explaining again the operational reasons why this request could not be granted and if possible, perhaps come to an agreement on an alternative date for this leave to be taken. Following this, if concerns are still present it is advisable for an employer to formally notify, by either letter or formal documented meeting, that the dates requested have been refused, the reason for refusal, and that should this employee go off sick or have any form of unauthorised absence on these dates, that disciplinary action may be taken. This ensures clear ground rules have been set and should the employee breach this instruction the employer is now in a strong position to take action. Should an employee reach the unfortunate stage of disciplinary action following such an issue, often they will argue that their absence was certified by a medical professional and as such they believe they are ‘untouchable’ in this respect. While as an Employer you are of course not qualified to question the opinion of a medical professional, the circumstances remain that this employee was specifically instructed that they would face such disciplinary action should they take this time off as sick leave and as such disciplinary action is justifiable on the reasonable belief that the sickness is not genuine (or is at least very coincidental). Conclusion In conclusion, if preventative steps are taken it is likely that employers will be able to prevent such an issue from occurring at all. However, should you find yourself facing such a scenario remember that precedent will prevail and taking action the first time can often mean a much lower likelihood of other employees repeating such misconduct as they will have witnessed the potential outcome if they do. Employers should seek advice from Peninsula Business Services when faced with any such absenteeism issues. Please phone the 24 Hour Advice Service on +353 (0) 1 8555050 and one of their experienced advisors will be happy to assist.
