Because fashion makes it a beautiful world out there, we’ve given you some denim looks to be both casual and gorgeous this summer (yes, denim and catwalk do mix). If you’re braving the elements but don’t want your makeup to stray, then trust our timely tips on how to get the right look with our melt-proof makeup beauty guide. Summer is the season made for brides and if you hit a snag with that decision on what party favors to get, don’t stress. Our crafts expert, Jann Johnson, shows you how easy it is to make precious wedding memories that won’t cost a fortune. Speaking of fortune, we recognize how difficult it may be to keep your home in these less than stable economic times. With this in mind, we have put together some tips on how to refinance and even apply for a home loan modification because we know your home is your castle.

DARE TO

DENIM

Summer’s Trendiest Fabric It’s hard to imagine denim is one of the world’s oldest fabrics, having made its introduction into fashion early on.

The word denim comes from the fabric called “Serge de Nimes” which was known in France before the 17th century, and is considered a variation of this name. Unlike the former fabric which was sometimes made of wool, denim is always cotton-based with multiple uses from jeans to jackets and even upholstery. This summer, take notes from the catwalk and indulge yourself in denim style. Gone are the days when the word primarily meant jeans and overalls. Most of all, denim caputures the essence of Americana: 16

it can be serious and playful, yet completely unpretentious. Today, stores are stocked with so many different styles of denim clothing that your chances of finding that perfect pair of jeans, special jacket or skirt are good. Summer 2010 fashion shows were flooded with a range of incredible and versatile denim styles. Designers from Burberry, who debuted the denim trench coat to much acclaim, to Christopher Kane, made the fabric one of the hottest and sexiest materials for the season.

If you

think denim is always a solid blue color, then think again. This gorgeous tiedyed dress was created to catch the eye. It’s embellished by the zipper and metallic details at the top. Pair this outfit with a chic belt and wear it alone or with a solid color vest: any color vest will do, but blue and white is preferable because it’s denim compatible. If you want to layer another element of fashion, add a contrasting, brightly-colored scarf around your neck. 1

Hot and Ruffled! Stars Heat Up the Red Carpet Wearing Pretty Dresses with Frilly Accents From the Oscar Awards, the Golden Globes to just about everywhere fancy, celebrities are wearing ruffles and frills to accent their wardrobe, and wearing them stylishly too! If you thought frills were only reserved for kids and teenagers, the trend points otherwise. Celebrities are wearing ruffles for the frill of it, but that’s not to say that you should wear everything that’s frilly out there. In order to embrace this trend, find a ruffled item of clothing you absolutely love. It could be a dress, a skirt or a peasant blouse – whatever strikes your fancy. To tie it all together, make sure you wear other complementary clothing that is more solid and contrasting than your ruffled numbers. With ruffles, remember to shy away from too much jewelry. Wear some bright makeup to complement your outfit and pin up your hair so that the spotlight is more on the outfit than your ‘do. As for the colors and textures that are going to be hot this season, try experimenting with pinks, creams and corals to get into the mood of spring and summer. If you choose darker shades, remember that the ruffles won’t stand out as much as they would on lighter shades. Now try it, and take a few pointers from these celebs who have been experimenting with ruffles and frills. 30

Demi Moore

Vera Farmiga

At the Los Angeles premier of “The Joneses,” Demi Moore wears a figure hugging, lavender, ruffles-in-theback dress. This is a great example of a dress to wear if you’re not completely sold on the ruffles theme but want just a smattering.

Vera wears a garnet colored Marchesa gown that is nothing but frills during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. Although we don’t advise covering yourself up in frills like this, Vera shows you how extreme this dress can be.

Zoe Saldana

wears a sleeveless purple satin sheath with touches of ruffles on the top half of the dress. The ruffles do the job of an elegant necklace, so she chooses not to wear any jewelry. She carries a dark clutch so as to not overshadow the color of the gown and wears matching pumps.

An off shoulder Alberta Ferretti gown was the talk of the city at the Berlin premiere of “Sherlock Holmes.” The cinched waist is spotlighted with a black ribbon and her 1950’s Marilyn Monroe inspired hairstyle and perfectly complementary lipstick makes this look resemble a pin up girl.

No one took the ruffles theme more to heart that Zoe Saldana at the Oscar Awards, when she wore her vibrant, flame red dress by Givenchy. Granted, some of you may not want the ruffles to be this understated , but whatever you do, don’t wear too many accessories.

WATER PROOF Beauty Products

It’s the zenith of summer and you want your makeup to stay in place despite all the breezy elements…the sand the sea and the waters all look so deliciously cool and inviting. But will the array of colors you wear on your face wear off by sundown or stay as everlasting as a timeless fragrance?

34

Waterproof makeup is not a new phenomenon. Considering that the art of cosmetics is at least 6,000 years old and touched upon almost every society on earth, it seems natural that waterproof makeup would be an essential item for the summer months (I’m sure Cleopatra wouldn’t have wanted her cat eyes to be messy).

Modern makeup technology has created a new breed of liquid eyeliners, cream and powder shadows, and mascaras that are designed to stick to your skin without compromise. Not only that, but there are smudge proof lipsticks and lip liners that will create rich color and gloss effects without over drying and disappearing.

Waterproof or sweat-proof makeup are specialized sub categories of makeup that fit an active lifestyle for a variety of professions, from being a racecar driver to a baker. During the warmer months, it’s essential that your careful and painstakingly applied eye shadow does not end up smudged on your face. There’s absolutely no place for the raccoon eye or smudged liner!

We have not forgotten about the most important part of your makeup, the foundation. There is such a thing as sweat proof foundation that won’t clog the pores or give you uneven coverage. So, are you going to be that girl who wants to be fabulous but is afraid that the sea water might have its way with her makeup or are you going to be brave and grab the bull by the horns? Go ahead, our picks have you covered!

For more information and money-saving coupons go to beautyhandbook.com

For foundation, we love L’Oreal’s new True Match Roller Perfecting Roll On Makeup and then layer a gentle sweeping layer of Bare Naturale gentle mineral makeup over it. True Match perfectly matches your skin’s tone and texture and leaves no streaks and smudges (plus, it’s long-lasting). For eye makeup, we love Revlon’s Luxurious Color eye shadows in satin and perle finishes. These rich and refined pigments go on beautifully and effortlessly, and will create a smoky eye effect in no time. The matte shades stay put for hours on end. Your nails need to electrify the sea itself! Put the turquoise to shame with your glistening shades. We love Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Nail Color that gives you a one coat coverage and dries in a mere 60 seconds. Your lips need to say more than hello this summer…they need to be as inviting as a pool party and, what’s more, they need to last. We love the lipsticks and glosses from Maybelline’s Color Sensational line. The lipsticks go on deliciously creamy and the glosses pack punch and shine while staying put for at least a few hours (enough for you to swim a few laps).

For hair color that lasts, even in the sun, use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners like L’Oreal’s Everpure and Everstrong lines. Highlights will fade with intense sunlight, so make sure you seek the shade periodically and wash your hair well post dip.

Melt-proof mascara? Is there such a thing as a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? We believe there is, with Covergirl’s Lashblast Fusion that gives you rainbow length lashes while creating a dramatic, yet sweat and smudge proof look.

Want to know a little trick that will make your lip color adhere more evenly and stay put longer? Dab a bit of foundation or primer on your lips before putting your lipstick on them.

7tips There are so many tried and true tips that will make your makeup and foundation last longer than the soap opera, “All My Children” – especially when the weather gets really hot. For fear of repeating ourselves, it’s not only the makeup you choose to wear but it’s how you apply it that really counts.

1. Always moisturize your skin before you set sail into the sun. Better still, wear a primer that doesn’t leave your skin greasy or oily.

2. Use a water based moisturizer instead of a creamy moisturizer because a non-oily base will help makeup last longer.

3. Wear several coats of waterproof mascara to ensure that it doesn’t smudge.

4. Wear eye shadows and blush with a touch of primer or foundation so that they will set well and last a long time.

5. Make sure you wear foundation that contains SPF as well as lip glosses that have some factor of sun protection in them as well.

6. Wear a hat for your hair to prevent color drainage. Washing your hair with sulfate free shampoos is a good idea, especially if you have color treated hair.

7. A great way to get even foundation and coverage is through exfoliation. Make sure you exfoliate gently (avoid abrasives) before applying moisturizer, primer and makeup.

To prevent oiliness or shiny spots on your forehead, keep oil-blotting tissues or wipes with you at all times. Neutrogena Deep Clean SPORT OnThe-Go Cleansing Wipes are a great way to eliminate 99% of sweat, dirt and oil. Each wipe is individually wrapped as well.

Eyeshadow this luxurious needs corresponding eyeliners that are unstoppable, and that’s precisely what Maybelline developed with its Unstoppable Smudge-Proof Waterproof Eyeliner. Wearing blush in the sun is a tricky thing to pull off because the heat itself makes your cheeks rosy. The trick is to apply just a small amount and blend it evenly with your foundation. We love Revlon’s ColorStay Mineral Blush in Deep Bronze that lets you sport a tan-like tint on your cheeks. To really amp up the volume on your lips and give them definition, use a lip liner; preferably, the shade you use will be similar or identical to the lip stick color you are already wearing. We recommend Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liners because they wear well and stay on for hours.

The bottom line is that you

don’t want makeup that smudges or strays while you frolic and do your outdoor activities, like windsurfing or kite surfing or even lying on the beach on a towel. If you follow these tips outlined above, you’ll have created a beautiful canvas of colors for your face – and one that will stay put for hours. If you have pale skin, then consider wearing pinks, especially on your cheeks. Wear soft blues or lavenders on your eyes (eye shadows) and lots of mascara and eyeliner to contrast. If you have darker or olive complexions, then wear warmer tones: bronzed blushes and deeper purples and mauves will do especially well, as will red lipsticks. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors this season and keep that makeup looking fresh and everlasting. 40

Princess Ney’tiri Zoe Saldana Yes, folks, the Avatar Na’vi Princess is

really a Jersey Girl. Zoe Yadira Zaldaña Nazario was born in the Garden State, and briefly lived in Queens, New York before moving to the Dominican Republic for seven years. In reality, she is a blend of several races. She acknowledges, “I’m Dominican, Lebanese, Indian, Irish, and Jamaican. But I hate going into that. I just say, `I’m from Queens.’ “ If you were impressed with her lithe and nimble figure in the James Cameron movie, Avatar, where she plays Princess Ney’tiri, it’s partly due to her training as a ballerina during her childhood. “Being a former classical dancer gave me grace as a human being, I guess,” she says, “Ballet is a very graceful form of art. You also become very aware of your body and your mind working in conjunction. That kind of helps you in acting as well. It’s not only using your mind, it’s like making your mind communicate this character into your body so that you can bring it to life and physicalize it.” Saldana prepared an intense six months for Avatar, including learning martial arts, archery and horseback riding, and the world loved her agility and grace. Also, she’s always been a sci-fi geek and lobbyed hard to be cast as Uhura in Star Trek (she’s a true Trekkie). The actor did a lot of her own stunts for Avatar and she even got stepped on by a horse! She loved riding that banshee, Zeze, on the set of Avatar but had no reservations about how difficult that was. “There’s a lot of toughness that I do have, but the reality is that the toughness covers up a lot of insecurities.”

Nyota Uhura, Enterprise com officer

What does Saldana love and what makes her tick? Sci-fi fans and nerds of the nation, rejoice. Saldana reveals that she is a true geek and that she’s seen many sci-fi movies, everything from Dune to Alien. Not really what I expected to hear from someone who is typically very classy. Her perfect man is a mixture of Spock and Kirk (so men who have only muscles to show her, don’t bother. She wants something in the upstairs department too; actually, everything in the upstairs department). That’s not to say she’ll settle for just anyone, but you get the idea. With Hollywood being the business machine that it is, Saldana is a realist. She understands that the creators and producers need to make money, and that each film has to make a certain amount each year in order for people to keep their jobs and create opportunities for other actors. Ney’tiri, she says, has been the most challenging charactor of her career, in all aspects: physically, mentally and spiritually. It was the first time that she had to play a non-human, and that role took all her energy and forced her to learn a different language because she was in Ney’tiri’s skin for a year and a half instead of the usual four months.

Personal Life Not everything has been a bed of roses for this talented actor. When she was only nine years old she moved to the Dominican Republic after her father died in a tragic car accident. She was a natural and gifted dancer and received a scholarship to the Ritmos Espacio de Danza Academy where she excelled and learned several dance techniques. Intense concentration and a steely focus made her successful in at least two dozen credits before she landed the role of Neytiri in Avatar. She has said, “You need 100% commitment; you have to be willing to wake up every morning knowing you’re going to practice eight hours straight.” It was during her teenage years that she became interested in acting,

and joined both the Faces Theatre Company and the New York Youth Theatre in New York City where she appeared in the production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” It was this performance that caught the attention of a Hollywood talent agent who helped her land a role in the dance drama “Center Stage.” After several films including “Get Over It” and “Crossroads” (for which she was nominated for a “Best Kiss” with Nick Cannon at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards), Saldana got an opportunity for a cameo appearance in the blockbuster movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003 where she played Anamaria, the only female pirate in the movie. She has said, “The experience that I had with working with director Gore (Verbinski) and slapping Johnny Depp, I will take that to my grave and I will die a happy woman, trust me.” After brief appearances in movies such as The Terminal with Tom Hanks, she appeared in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek in 2008 and then on to Avatar in 2009. In Star Trek, she played Nyota Uhura, the USS Enterprise communications officer. The next film in her list is Death at a Funeral that releases in theatres in 2010 as well the untitled Star Trek sequel that releases in 2011.

Future Plans and Acting Saldana is brilliant and quietly determined and intent on living and enjoying life. “I want to travel more, drink more wine and love life,” she has said. She is also a staunch feminist and loves other women and the idea of empowering women. “I don’t want to be any other woman but myself,” she says. Saldana, who is on the cover of Glamour Magazine’s April 2010 issue, says that she really bristles at the word “ethnic” when it comes to describing herself. “Ethnic is a word that doesn’t exist in my vocabulary,” she says. In Hollywood, you hear things like, “Oh, they loved you but they want to go more traditional. So when [someone says] I look “dark,” I say, “Dark compared to whom? This is just my skin.”

oil on canvas, 2004 I’ve always loved art. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t painting, or studying art. My Dad bought me my first pastel set when I was 9 years old. The process here is to avoid purchasing material as much as possible. If you’re a beachcomber, then by all means, gather various shaped seashells from your travels, from tiny smooth ones to ones with ridges. They can come in various shapes and sizes and no two boxes need be alike. Elmer’s Glue-All (www.elmers.com). Elmer’s Glue-All is the perfect, straight-out-of-the-bottle stuff for gluing the sand to the box (it doesn’t have to be diluted-- a messy thing-- and some people add too much water or not enough) and it will also work for gluing on porous shells. Do-It-Yourself Crafts

Instructions:

1. If you want colorful, painted shells, then cover the top and sides and leave the underneath unpainted for better glue contact later. We used equal parts of blue and white for the starfish and one part pink and two parts white for the urchin. Let dry. 2. Evenly brush the top of the box with Elmer’s Glue-All; then sprinkle sand on top and gently knock off excess. Let dry. 3. Now, glue outside of the balsa wood box rim completely with the Elmer’s Ultra Stix All Clear Ultra Stix All Clear stick. Starting at the seam, place the ribbon on the rim, lining up top edges, and wrap around rim. Glue the overlap (about ¼”). 4. Glue seashell to the top of the sand-coated box. Use the white glue for a porous shell (such as a sand dollar) or the Ultra Stix All for a less porous shell (such as the turban). If you want, the best thing to do is

50

to test a sample shell and let dry twenty four hours. 5. To make a cushion for gift, place a bit of batting inside bottom of box. Cut a 3” round of felt and place on top of batting to cover it. Multiple batches: These boxes are fairly easy to make and several can be churned out in an hour; so if your wedding party list includes over 100 people, you should be able to finish a batch in a weekend (enlist your relatives and helpers for this one). The costs of this project are relatively insignificant but the result is a charming keepsake that your guests will take with them and cherish. If you would like, personalize it with a trinket or a bracelet inside, or paint the date of your wedding underneath. There’s nothing more personal than a custom made wedding favor to remind guests of how special and unique you–and they–are.

Do-It-Yourself Crafts There is an art to layering these boxes so that they will resemble a nice cocoon for your painted seashell or necklace. Take a sizeable chunk of surgical cotton and place it at the bottom of the box, and then cover it with a circle of the blue felt. Ordinary cotton will be too wispy and thin, so look for something a little bit more substantial. Once you’ve layered the box, you now have a cushion for your

valuables. Then, display the boxes proudly as center pieces at the wedding table, or placed individually on dinner plates, like a sea-motif. Once you have assembled enough of these pieces for each table consider your work finished. Your guests now not only a keepsake from your wedding but also have something really personalized from you to remember that special day.

Summer Flowers for Your Home By Sabina Covo

Where to grow your flowers is the key: reserve the splendid roses for outside, orchids for indoors. Summer is the dream season, and along with the summer comes the pool days, the beach, and the fun outdoor moments at the lake or the park and of course…the garden. Who hasn’t dreamt of a beautiful indoor or outdoor garden full of sunflowers and roses, or shiny violets hanging from your balcony or a living room with splendid orchids? During the summer, breathtaking flowers can be grown indoors and outdoors, and there is great advice from experts for you to know which flowers grows best. The key: the right flower, for the right place. “It is very easy today to have a summer garden without all the work. Many stores and nurseries sell pre-seeded mats that you simply lay down. For those who prefer to do things the old fashion way, I suggest using a raised bed. The key is where you grow the plants.” Explains Sheri Ann Richerson, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Year-Round Gardening”. “You can use weed cloth as well. Fill the raised bed with a good quality soil and plant. The use of mulch will help hold moisture in the soil and keep weeds down. Leave a small area – or several small areas uncovered. Bees and butterflies need the minerals found in soil.” She adds. The most important thing is to find out whether the flowers love sun or shade. Annuals and Perennials that Bloom in the summer For Virginia Monteforte, Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional at Hicks Nurseries, in Westbury, New York there are 54

many annuals and perennials that can be planted in the garden to great advantage. Annuals are flowers that bloom for a season and do not return the next year. The plus side of annuals is that they bloom all summer long, giving constant color. Popular annuals that work well in the garden are impatiens, wax begonias, lobelia, petunias, marigolds, alyssum, snapdragons, celosia and torenia. Perennials come back year after year but have a shorter bloom time, although some, like coreopsis and stella d’oro day lilies, bloom most of the summer. Perennials make for an interesting garden if you stagger the plantings; as one group is finishing, another is starting to bloom. So your garden can change from yellows and purples in the spring to pinks later in the season. The Best for the Outdoors Everyone’s favorite seems to be the rose. Roses come in a huge variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Many people have been afraid to grow roses because they are very prone to disease and hard to grow but that has changed with Knock Out roses. This is a new hybrid that is resistant to black spot, drought tolerant, self-cleaning and mildew resistant, explains Monteforte. Knock Out roses are perfect for the low maintenance garden. They are prolific bloomers with no trimming required for repeat flowering. “The proper time for planting and flowering, as well as their care, depends on the latitude and climate where you live. In most of the US these are spring and summer plants, but in Florida the summers are too hot and humid, so they are planted in the fall to flower in the winter!” Explains Donn Flipse, President of

Find what you like and plant it in the right area of your home and make your residence a flowery, colorful, beautiful summer place!

Field of Flowers, South Florida’s Fresh Flower Superstore. He recommends Calla lilies, since they make lovely cut flowers and are easy to grow; Hydrangeas which can be easily grown in many climates and eventually can grow to become large bushes and provide enough flowers for an entire neighborhood; Peonies, like hydrangeas, which can grow to become large bushes which bloom huge flowers that make lovely arrangements in the late spring and early summer. Other great outdoor flowers include milkweed, bee balm, zinnia, sunflowers, coneflower and yarrow. Flowers for the Indoors Growing flowers indoors can be relatively simple since the indoor environment is best controlled and can be kept at an even temperature. Flowers can be protected from extremes of wind and rain, and can also be protected from many pests that are present outside. Your Indoor flowers will need lots of light and of course to be planted in a decent potting mix “(I don’t say “soil” because most modern potting mixes contain no soil) and will need proper watering and fertilizing,” says Flips. “Bulb flowers like tulips, iris, lilies, freesia, amaryllis and daffodils are great for indoors. They need very little light because they have sufficient energy stored up in the bulb in order to sustain the flower.” Some other flowers that can be successfully grown indoors are: African violets, orchids, Spathiphyllum, hibiscus, and gardenia (these have a wonderful aroma). 56

Some other Tips from the Experts “People don’t think of a pineapple as a flower, but you can cut the top off the next one you buy to eat, pot it up, put it in a sunny spot and have a new flower and fruit in a year,” recommends Flips. Also many flowering plants can be considered indoor and outdoor plants in certain climes. Hibiscus for instance if grown in pots can be put outside during the warm months and then can be brought indoors during cold months. Most houseplants can be outside placed in summer; tropical houseplants love the humidity. Plants can sunburn, just like people, so move them into the sun gradually by first placing them on a covered porch or under the shade of a tree. “Bring them back in the house before Labor Day so they can get used to being indoors before you turn on the heat,” adds Flips. For an interesting vertical element in your garden, don’t forget flowering vines. The flowers you plant in your garden are a matter of personal taste – planning a garden is like decorating your home. The ABC’s of Summer Smoothies By Megan Sarah Johnson

Y

ou’ve heard of the celebrities who won’t get up in the morning without a jumbo-sized Jamba Juice®. You remember the cookie cutter Orange Julius® stands littering the shopping malls of teenage yesteryear. And you’ve even been thirsty enough to throw some fruit in the blender at home and call it a smoothie. But if you’re not so sure what’s in those store-bought smoothies you fork over some serious dough for, you might be pretty surprised. The drinks you think might be packed with healthy nutrients are often traps of sugar and chemicals. Making your own smoothies at home is a lot easier than it sounds, and we’ve got recipes galore and plenty of nuggets of nutritional information to keep you hydrated through the summer. So grab a seat and a blender and follow our guide to healthy juicing in 2010! Smoothie Chains: a Blessing and a Curse We love the accessibility of smoothie chains, but if you really knew what was inside the options at the majority of smoothie bars, we bet you’d be running for the hills. Don’t be mistaken by the photos of fresh fruits and colorful drinks; there are not that many differences between your venti mocha Frappaccino at Starbucks® and a power size protein shake at Jamba Juice. Ever glance at the caloric content on one of those? You’ll be knocked back to yesterday when you see the truth. Sure, the Pomegranate Pick Me Up at Jamba Juice looks healthy. Pomegranates? Packed with antioxidants! But wait. If you go for the 32 ounce power size, that’s over 500 calories and 105 grams of sugar. The “juice blends” are sugar and other artificial sweeteners, while ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet are simply delicious desserts masked as healthy ingredients. Jamba Juice isn’t the only chain with some dieting red flags. At Boston based smoothie and burrito chain Boloco®, the smoothies are popular options that eschew traditional nutrition traps like whole 58

milk and ice cream. While the options are delicious and healthier than milkshakes, they can still pack on the pounds if you’re looking to stay trim. One popular option, the “Jimmy Carter Shake”, is made with skim milk, peanut butter, banana, and nonfat frozen yogurt. The largest option, the original size, packs in over 900 calories and 29 grams of fat, not to mention over 80 grams of sugar! If you just have to have a store-bought option, consider the smaller size. 900 calories is about half of your daily caloric intake! Don’t waste it all on something you’re going to feel guilty about. A smaller option is a reasonable choice that will give you the satisfaction of knowing you haven’t sabotaged your diet. Dietician Leah McGrath tells us, “I think it’s definitely smoothie trap when you think of them as beverages in addition to a meal. They could replace your meal!” Fruitful Recipes Ah, the glory days of summer: sand between your toes, a beach hat and sunglasses the only necessary accessories, and a frosty drink in your hand. But bail on the pina colada, and ditch the strawberry daiquiri. Those alcoholic beverages are basically composed of booze, chemicals, and the arch enemy of healthy people everywhere: sugar. But this doesn’t mean you have to spend your summer vacation sipping only bottled water, either. For a berry smoothie packed with antioxidants, check out this easy recipe:

Antioxidant Berry Blast Smoothie Ingredients: ½ cup frozen strawberries ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup frozen blueberries ½ cup frozen blackberries 1 cup French vanilla yogurt ½ cup cold water ½ cup crushed ice

While traditional yogurt is fine, Greek yogurt brands like Fage® and Chobani® are thicker, custard-like options with a lot less sugar, and a special punch of protein. If you’re really on a tight budget or are just tired of spending upwards of $6 per container, you can make your own yogurt for a super economical and healthy option. Check out this recipe from The Leather District Gourmet, Jacqueline Church, who graciously allowed us to follow her steps for making home-made Greek-style yogurt: Start with the best quality Greek-style yogurt. A small container will do. Say “buh-bye” to this section of the dairy case -you’ll not be returning once you try this at home! Use this as your “starter.” Try 2% Organic, local hormone-free milk. 1. Heat 2% milk till it’s steaming and starting to bubble. If you have a thermometer this will be around 180-190 degrees. 2. Take off the heat, let cool to 120 then mix with starter (2 TBSP). 3. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, swaddle with 2 kitchen towels. 4. Keep in oven with light on (no other heat is necessary) for 4 hours or over night. 5. Awake or return to find the miracle of homemade yogurt. That’s it! 6. To make it Greek-style: Place cheesecloth or a basket style coffee-filter in a strainer, over a bowl. 7. Refrigerate for a couple of hours until you see the sort of pale chartreuse liquid gathering in the bowl. That’s the whey. 8. The thickened yogurt is perfect to eat as is, or swirl in some jam, chop of fresh fruit or use it to sauce your next sustainable seafood dish! 9. Don’t forget to save a couple tablespoons as starter for the next batch! Straining out the whey to make Greek-style yogurt removes even more of the lactose or sugar which can be helpful for those with insulin issues. Straining the whey is not necessary but it results in a creamier, richer, premium-style yogurt. Use yogurt in place of all or some of the mayonnaise in recipes, use in saucing, in dips. Yogurt made at home is refreshing and just slightly tart, not sour and watery like store-bought (www.jacquelinechurch.com). If you’re a sweet tooth trying to go healthy, consider adding in a banana to your smoothie. The riper the bananas, the sweeter your smoothie will taste, so don’t fear the brownish bananas from last week’s grocery shopping trip. They still taste great when they’re chopped up in a blender, and we promise it will cure your sugar craving. Apples and grapes are equally as sweet fruits that won’t sabotage your healthy aspirations. While it’s okay to use frozen yogurt in place of Greek or regular yogurt for an after dinner dessert smoothie, try to keep a distance from the frosty, after-meal treats until dinner time. Here’s an option for your sweet tooth:

Super Strawberry Banana Dream Smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup crushed ice 1 cup frozen strawberries 1 over ripe banana ½ cup water 1 cup strawberry yogurt

If you’re a diehard sugar-junkie with a propensity for pouring sugar, Splenda™, or Sweet N Low™ into your drinks, consider taking a step back before you tear open those packages. Fruit is already rather sweet, and overloading your meals is a one way ticket on the diabetes train. But if you’re having serious sugar cravings and think an unsweetened smoothie tastes bland, try this recipe for a serious punch of sweetness and flavor:

Sugar Addict’s Survival Smoothie Ingredients: 1 cup crushed ice 1 over ripe banana ½ cup grapes (green or red) ½ cup frozen raspberries ½ cup chopped Macintosh apple ½ cup frozen strawberries 1 cup yogurt (vanilla or flavor of your choice) Some of the best smoothie recipes aren’t even made with traditional ingredients like strawberries and bananas. While cruising for unorthodox smoothie ideas, we spoke to Tina from the popular blog Carrots ‘N’ Cake. “My best idea for keeping smoothies healthy is to think outside of the box. I think people automatically associate smoothies with fruit, but they can include veggies, oatmeal, ground flaxseed meal, coconut, and a variety of other nutrients. I always try to have at least 1 fruit and veggie in my smoothies.” Tina shared this delicious recipe from Carrots ‘N’ Cake with us:

Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie Ingredients: 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato 1 ripe banana 1/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt 1/4 cup vanilla soy milk 1 tbsp hemp (or whey) protein 1 tbsp agave nectar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 cup ice Dash of nutmeg Directions: Combine all ingredients in blender until smooth. For more information on Tina’s website, www.visitcarrotsncake.com.

Breakfast or Dessert? There’s a big difference between what’s appropriate to gobble up for breakfast, and what a reasonable dessert is after a meal. Remember, your first meal of the day is like starting your car. You want to have enough fuel to sustain you until your next meal. While a sudden sugar rush may feel good when it hits, a few minutes later you’ll probably be headed to the coffee machine to prevent that afternoon nap. Try to fuse together your love of treats with your need for quality nutrition. Nobody wants to feel deprived of what they want. Instead, do the legwork to find treat that are healthy and delicious. Despite the hazards of smoothie overload, everyone deserves a treat sometimes and these recipies are very easy to do!

One Person’s Trash: How to Hold a Successful Clothing Swap By Megan Sarah Johnson

It would be a challenge to find a woman who isn’t a fan of shopping. But it certainly isn’t hard to find cash-strapped, credit card debt-laden individuals in every direction. With the recession saddling those who never expected to be out of work with unemployment, not to mention the expenses of daily life like children, food, and shelter, women are much less likely to drop $700 on a pair of Christian Louboutin snake-skin gladiator sandals. But even if you were never at the point where you’d drop that kind of cash on shoes, you feel the pinch of financial worry everywhere you go. But does that mean the fun has to stop in its tracks? No way! If you’re looking to grab some new duds while preserving your bank account’s delicate status, consider the amazing benefits of a clothing swap. In an era when our intense consumer culture has nearly devoured us whole, we need to get over the burning desire to buy everything brand new. 60

We’ve created so much waste there’s not enough room on the planet to house it anymore! Take a note from your Depressionera ancestors, and learn to live frugally no matter your financial status. Instead of heading out to buy something, remember that the best resource for finding new outfits and accessories is those nearest and dearest to your heart: Your friends and family. So gear up for some hard core trading and check out our expert guide to swapping for style.

Prepping for the Swap Before the fun can begin, there’s some pretty heavy work to get out of the way. In order to figure out what clothing and accessories you are willing to get rid of, you have to perform an inventory of what you already have. Yes, everyone, this means cleaning out your closet and dresser drawers. Sure, some

people beam at the thought of organizing a cluttered room, but we admit that’s just not us. However, it’s vital to the swapping process, so we’re willing to put in some pain and suffering for the finished product. First off, make the cleaning experience enjoyable. Challenging? Yes, but impossible, no. Crank up your favorite tunes and slap on your most comfortable sweats. Clean off a significant portion of your floor and separate items into piles. Have one pile for swapping and one for donating to charity, because it’s pretty safe to say you will find a few undesirable items in your closet that will only find a home at The Salvation Army or Goodwill. But before you go throwing things away, it’s important to do a full review of what you have. When you’ve decided what items you can part with, make sure to give them all a fresh laundering. Don’t just say in your head “This smells fine.” You want your items to look as new as possible, and people will definitely notice serious wrinkles and mothball-y smells. Also, anything that features broken zippers and clasps is pretty much a no-go, unless you are willing to pay to get it fixed. Once your items are washed, dried, and folded, write down a list of everything you’re willing to bring to the swap. It’s important to know what you have before you can focus on getting anything new. If you’re looking to keep the swapping to your inner circle, you can still come away with amazing items that are new to you. Pick an evening for you and your girlfriends to gather at your home. The crowds are much more likely to come when food and beverages are offered, so consider popping open a couple bottles of wine and ordering pizza. Encourage friends to gut their closets and bring their unwanted items over for a fun night of swapping and chatting. Separate items into different piles like handbags, shoes, sweaters, dresses and pants. When you’ve all gathered, take notice of who’s gunning for a specific item. Usually, a girl who has spotted something she really wants will have no hesitation about making herself known. Let her declare her mission off the bat, but don’t let anyone walk all over you just because they want an items of yours. You’re looking for an even trade, not an unfair one. With the economy in the dumps and everyday men and women suffering from a lack of stellar items decorating their closets, clothing swaps have taken off on an even larger scale. People come from miles away to swap their goods at larger venues, and to snag the goods of others. Popular websites like www.clothingswap.com and www.swapaholics.com help to gather people together with the mission of swapping. As an extra incentive, they promise additional things for attending, like mini spa procedures and cocktails. While larger swapfests promise big attendance and even better offerings to choose from, be prepared to spend a little cash in order to gain entry. While it may not be as cheap as holding an event for your friends and family, the quantity of items available will grow significantly if you swap on a larger scale. If you don’t think your home can handle that sort of foot traffic, consider renting a church basement for a day.

Embracing Social Media If you’re looking to expand your swap beyond a simple get together with your closest pals, the best tool for getting the word out is social media. Chances are if you’re looking to spot a clothing swap, or to publicize your own, then there’s someone out there who’s looking to do the same. Join forces and let the 62

Whether it’s our friends and family, or hundreds of strangers who’ve come from far and wide just to trade, we can do our part to save a little green, and to make our world a little greener. power of technology take hold! Create an event on sites like Facebook, Myspace, and Yelp, and publicize through Twitter and FourSquare. Also, while it may be called a clothing swap, there’s no need to limit your items to simply clothing and accessories. For many avid swappers, kitchenware and household items are even more desirable than clothes. You’ll find that people of all kinds come out of the woodwork to catch a glimpse of gently used items like Le Creuset cookware and Ikea furniture. By broadening your product base, more people will be encouraged to join in and get trading. But make sure before you head out the door with a car full of kitchen appliances that all your fellow swappers know what items are acceptable. It’s definitely no fun to show up at a clothing-only swap with a trunk packed with blenders and toasters. America’s obsession with consuming has led us into a lot of trouble. Whether it’s too much food, or too much clothing, we’ve ended up gorging ourselves on things we simply didn’t need. And with the damage we’ve incurred on our environment continuing to rear its ugly head, we’re now serving the punishment that reminds us how our gluttonous culture is ugly and wasteful. But does that mean we can’t have any fun, and jazz up our closets once in awhile? Not at all. It simply serves as a reminder that we really don’t need to go out and fork over our hard-earned money for something that’s brand new. Whether it’s our friends and family, or hundreds of strangers who’ve come from far and wide just to trade, we can do our part to save a little green, and to make our world a little greener too. While it’s eco-friendly to recycle goods, and wallet-friendly as well, swapping still is an enjoyable way to bring people together.

The Workout

Burn Baby Burn! Heart rate monitors have a wide price range from $30 up to over $300. However, they can be a great way to ensure you are burning the most possible calories. When buying a heart rate monitor be sure to look out for a several key things:

Find the Right Heart Rate Monitor for You

Fitness Level, Needs, and Goals. This means don’t buy a very expensive and complicated heart monitor if you’re only a casual jogger. If you’re an experienced athlete then go for the more complex monitor, but if this is your first heart monitor: try to keep it simple.

Monitor! by Susan Skakel Heart Rate Monitors can be a really easy way to keep your focus on the goal of losing weight, toning down, or simply staying in good shape! However, navigating the market for these small miracle workers can be very tricky if you don’t know what to look for. With a couple of simple things to keep in mind, finding the right heart rate monitor that best suits you can be easy! Simple, beginner heart rate monitors usually come with clock, stopwatch and of course, heart rate features. Advanced, heart rate monitors can come with many complex and different features from a clock and heart rate to GPS and distance alerts. Figuring out what your workout regime needs from a heart rate monitor is an important 1st step in the process of deciding on the right heart rate monitor.

Level of Comfort. Definitely try on the heart monitor before you buy it. Everyone’s needs and wants are different so a great heart monitor for your friend might not feel as comfortable when you wear it. If you’re used to running without anything, go for something smaller. Budget. Heart monitors can get pretty pricey so if you’re not looking to break the bank, try shopping around online and comparing prices and features. Remember, unless you’re an experienced athlete you probably don’t need the most expensive heart rate monitor out there. Make the Beach Your Gym If you’re tired of paying full fare to go to an indoors-based gym with the run of the mill equipment – from stationery bikes to weights, then you may need to flavor your workouts a little. Buff and tone your body with these beach-based exercises. If you’re tired of paying full fare to go to an indoors-based gym with the run of the mill equipment – from stationery bikes to weights, then you may need to flavor your workouts a little. Have you ever thought of taking your gym surf side? This tactic can be fun and unusual and even motivate you to workout harder and more often. The last thing that people want is a boring routine; even muscles need variety! In some

states, Southern California for instance, beach workouts are very common and you can see joggers enjoying the sand while running barefooted and enjoying breaking a sweat outdoors. There is also a prison-like mentality that comes over time if you’re a die-hard gym junkie. Whoever said that weights, crunches and cardiovascular activities need to be limited to a space within four walls? If you’re stuck in a rut about your exercise routine, then consider moving shore-side and shake things up with these cardiovascular and cross-training exercises.

Running or walking on the beach is tougher than you think. The sandy surface has some give and your body is not impacted as much, but the slope of the surface may be initially challenging. If you find running to be initially harder then consider running for a short distance and then walking.

FITNESS Hip Squats Stand straight with your hands on your hips. Place your right leg forward so it is bent 90 degrees at the knee. Make sure your hands are still on your hips. Your left leg will be bent down, close to the sand, and also at 90 degree angle. Stay in

this position for a few seconds, and then bring your right leg back to the initial position. This exercise is great for toning your muscles and strengthening your quadriceps. Try to do a set of six to seven of these lunges, and then alternate with the other leg.

Legs Stand straight with your arms on your hips and your feet together. Now, raise your right leg almost 45 degrees to the ground, and keep your left leg balanced. Bring your leg down

to the initial position, and then do a brief squat (for a second or two) and stand straight up. Repeat this exercise with the other leg. This exercise is great for the hips and also the quads. Do a set of six to seven repetitions.

No Prescription Needed: Decipher the Difference between Clinical and Over-the-Counter Products By Megan Sarah Johnson

Everywhere we look, over the counter products are being overshadowed by prescription items that require a doctor’s signature and a fat wallet. With the recent transition of clinical strength products from the doctor’s office to the pharmacy shelves, the need for a doctor’s approval continues to fade. We see Brooke Shields on billboards acting as the spokeswoman for Latisse®. But why go to a doctor for those results when a tube of Maybelline’s Great Lash offers the same results? As more and more prescription treatments no longer require a doctor’s approval, we have stopped dishing out credit cards and writing checks for expensive treatments at the MD’s office. Instead, we can get these items at our local pharmacy because they rebranded as “clinical-strength.” America’s proclivity to choose prescription options is starting to become extinct in the face of over the counter products. Whether you believe it’s worth the money to have the reassurance of a doctor, or even if you would rather pocket the change and go it alone, we’ve got a full review of all things deemed “clinical.” The Coveted: White Teeth While we all want healthy teeth free of plaque and cavities, the most popular complaint dentists see about teeth is related to whitening. While we all want glowing smiles fit for billboards and commercials, achieving that can be quite the challenge, especially with the free radicals we expose our teeth to on a daily basis. But there is hope for those with yellow, stained chompers, and it doesn’t include getting veneers or ending up with dentures. However before you start to work on your smile, remember that it is vital to find a regular dentist that can provide you with checkups every six months. And while there are many options available at your regular dentist such as Zoom® and

BriteSmile®, these options generally cost hundreds of dollars, and can even be very painful. But even if you visit your dentist on a regular basis, no matter how hard you brush or how often you gargle, getting white teeth can be a challenge. Luckily, there’s a variety of options for a whiter, brighter smile so you don’t have to hide your smiles from onlookers. It’s incredibly easy to fall into the web of stained teeth. Frequent tooth enemies include red wine, cigarettes and cigars, cola, tea, and many others. If you’re on a budget and aren’t looking to spend your rent on professional procedures or expensive products, your local drugstore has a variety of whitening products that work efficiently. Colgate Pro Clinical Line Designed by dental professionals at the forefront of their field, Colgate’s new ProClinical™ line is ideal for people who want serious results without committing to extensive procedures. Available over-the-counter at your local drugstore, Colgate® ProClinical™ is different because it combines high-quality ingredients with advanced dental technologies. The line offers three toothpastes, each specializing in one area. First, the Daily Whitening Toothpaste is specifically used to target stain area and stain intensity. In a six-week study where participants brushed with Colgate® ProClinical™ Daily Whitening , significant results were recognized within 3 weeks, compared to those who brushed with traditional fluoride toothpaste. The Daily Renewal for Enamel option contains 36% more fluoride than traditional toothpaste, which is especially good for those who don’t get the required amount of fluoride from their tap water. At the highest level of fluoride available without a prescription, this would be the best option for those hoping to increase the strength of their teeth and decrease dental decay. The third Colgate® ProClinical™ option is Daily Cleaning. Made with an ingredient that is similar to what dentists use, Daily Cleaning is for those who are looking for gloss and a deep-clean feeling every day. (cont page 74)

No Prescription Needed

At Home Whitening Options Another at-home whitening option is trays, which are similar to those used in professional dentists’ offices. Aquafresh Whitening Trays are a popular with individuals who don’t want to pay for a professional dentist’s application. Another choice frequented by drugstore shoppers is whitening pens, such as the Listerine Whitening Pen. While the pen claims to freshen breath while whitening teeth by daily application for two weeks, dental professionals tend to doubt their ability. However, they continue to sell successfully, so we assume someone must be pleased with the results. But the most popular method of whitening at home continues to be whitening strips, with sales of over the counter whitening strips getting stronger each year. All whitening strips include small, plastic pieces coated in sticky hydrogen peroxide, which is then left on the teeth for a short time. Crest Whitestrips, the most popular brand, prevents plaque and tartar buildup while keeping your enamel safe. While there are some obnoxious attributes to whitening strips, including when saliva gets inside the strips and they start falling off, or the chemical taste that can make its way onto your tongue, the positive results of whitening strips is pretty universal. But if you’re interested in whitening strips at a high level of hydrogen peroxide, Crest continues to strengthen their Whitestrips each year. Their newest and strongest product is Crest 3D White Whitestrips Professional Effects, which claims visible results in three days, and complete results in 20. But use the strips responsibly; never leave them on for more than the time required, or you could damage your tooth enamel and end up with extreme sensitivity. Gum Disease Gum disease is a threat to not only your oral health, but your cardiovascular wellbeing as well. Dr. Katz PerioTherapy Gum Care Oral Treatment is a clinical strength rinse for optimal gum health. But don’t mistake this with common mouthwash; PerioTherapy provides oxygen to your gums and rids the area of bacteria that causes cavities. If you’re prone to bloody gums and significant discomfort while brushing, take the step to restore your gum health. This clinical strength product is available at your local pharmacy and is quite the bargain. Brushing and Flossing: Daily Necessities If you’re worried about your teeth, remember the best way to maintain healthy pearly whites is by brushing and flossing frequently. Our contributing dentist, Dr. Alex Moheban of Boston, advocates brushing and flossing 3 times a day. “The top items that I’ve seen discolor teeth are smoking, then tea and coffee.” So is there a better brushing method? “Absolutely. Electric toothbrushes that use sonic waves may seem like a luxury, but they do make a difference. Now there are kinds that count down the time you should be brushing. It tells you when you’re done. It’s easy.” At the top of the electric brush food chain is the Oral B Professional Care Smart Series 5000 Rechargable Toothbrush, which claims to remove 99.7% of plaque in hard to reach areas. However it costs a pretty penny. Top of the line electric toothbrushes cost so much because they utilize sonic waves in order to fight gingivitis and prevent tartar buildup, just like your dentist does in his office. There are also cheaper varieties of electronic options in your local drugstore aisles, such as the Oral B Vitality Precision Clean 74

‘‘

Gum disease is a threat to not only your oral health, but your cardiovascular wellbeing as well.

Electric Toothbrush. While you can find dentist approved brushes at a variety of price levels, don’t expect that simply purchasing an electric will restore the quality of your teeth. There’s no use in buying yourself an expensive electric and ignoring it for the rest of the year. The most important aspect of oral care is regularity. An inexpensive toothbrush from the bargain bin of your local pharmacy will surpass all the fancy oral healthcare procedures in the world if you simply use it on a daily basis in a thorough manner. When you let your oral health go bad, the rest of your health can follow. Scientists have linked oral health to heart disease, as well as a variety of other infections cause by neglecting your teeth and gums. Remember, just because it’s not your heart doesn’t mean you should ignore its wellbeing. Clinical Strength Deodorant For those who sweat chronically, regular deodorant just doesn’t cut it. While there are definitely some powerhouse products out there that can conquer sweat, some people still need something a bit stronger in order to fight the funky smell and armpit stains. While prescription-strength deodorants are available from your normal doctor, they can be quite pricey and equally as uncomfortable to use. One reader told us that while her prescription deodorant prevented sweating, it led to other problems. “It worked- no sweating, no smell,” she tells us. “But my armpits itched incredibly. It was more embarrassing to be scratching constantly than to just sweat!” She has found that Dove Ultimate is the next best option. There are other clinicalstrength deodorants that manage to work successfully without embarrassing effects. Secret Clinical Strength Advanced Solution Deodorant is a formula designed to take action while you sleep. By controlling your body’s natural temperature changes, it restricts the ability of wetness to break through. Our easilyperspiring volunteers stated that while it isn’t as powerful as the type prescribed by their doctor, Secret and Dove are the best options out there, especially in uncomfortable summer months. Whether you’re a persistent perspirer or a frequent flosser, the products we previously had to look to our doctors for are continuing to hit the shelves of our local stores. This means stronger products and faster results, but with increased intensity comes certain responsibilities for consumers. We have to make sure we don’t use products irresponsibly just because they’re over the counter. In the same way we wouldn’t take an entire bottle of Advil just because we don’t need a doctor to prescribe it, inundating your teeth with over the counter bleaching trays is only going to end up with a disaster. Always read the instructions, and consult your doctor before pursuing any sort of treatment.

Menopause: The Facts of Life By Michelle Goodman

What was sometimes society’s cynical view of “getting old,” menopause is now viewed more and more as a natural phase of a woman’s life rather than a medical or psychological illness. There is even a musical comedy, Menopause, The Musical, about the subject in which a healthy dialogue about women’s issues of aging and health are addressed in a engaging and educational way. Menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and fertility, which is defined as occurring 12 months after a woman’s last menstrual period. Hormonal changes cause menopause’s physical symptoms, but erroneous beliefs about the menopause are somewhat to blame for the emotional ones. For example, menopause will not put an end to your femininity and sexuality. Some women actually feel liberated that they don’t have to worry about pregnancy and periods anymore. Perimenopause is a term often used to refer to the menopausal transitional period. It is important to see your doctor during the years leading up to menopause. For example if you have skipped a period but are not sure you have started menopause, you should be evaluated by your doctor to confirm that the irregular menses are due to perimenopause and not as a sign of another medical condition. Two very simple tests can accurately determine what’s going on and what stage of menopause you’re in. Your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels will dramatically rise as your ovaries begin to shut down; these levels are easily checked through a blood test but are not always helpful as levels are not predictive and can fluctuate widely. In addition, your vaginal walls will thin, and the cells lining the vagina will not contain as much estrogen. Your doctor will simply take a Pap-like smear from your vaginal walls -- simple and painless -- and analyze the smear to check for vaginal “atrophy,” the thinning and drying out of your vagina. 76

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS The signs and symptoms of menopause often appear long before the one-year anniversary of your final period. Each woman’s experience is highly individual. Some women may experience few or no symptoms of menopause, while others experience multiple physical and psychological symptoms. These symptoms include: • Irregular vaginal bleeding. Irregular vaginal bleeding may occur during menopause. Some women have minimal problems with abnormal bleeding whereas others have unpredictable, excessive bleeding. Menstrual periods may occur more frequently or they may get farther and farther apart before stopping altogether. It is not uncommon for a woman to have a period after going for several months without one. The menstrual abnormalities that begin in the perimenopause are also associated with a decrease in fertility, since ovulation has become irregular. However, women who are perimenopausal may still become pregnant. • Hot flashes and night sweats. Hot flashes are common among women going through menopause. A hot flash is a feeling of warmth that spreads over the body. A hot flash usually lasts from 30 seconds to several minutes. While the exact cause is not really known hot flashes are likely due to a combination of hormonal and biochemical fluctuations brought on by declining estrogen levels. Hot flashes occur in up to 40 % of regularly menstruating women in their forties. About 80% of women will be finished having hot flashes after five years. Sometimes (in about 10% of women) hot flashes can last as long as 10 years. There is no way to predict when they will end though they tend to decrease in frequency over time. Sometimes hot flashes are accompanied by night sweats (episodes of drenching sweat at nighttime). This may lead to

The drop in estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause can lead to depression, which can include anxiety, fears and mood swings.

awakening and difficulty falling back to sleep, resulting in unrefreshing sleep and daytime tiredness. • Vaginal Symptoms. Vaginal symptoms occur as a result of the lining tissues of the vagina becoming thinner, drier and less elastic as estrogen levels decline. Symptoms may include vaginal dryness, itching or irritation and/or pain with intercourse. The vaginal changes also lead to an increased risk of vaginal infections. • Urinary symptoms. The lining of the urethra (the transport tube leading from the bladder to discharge urine outside the body) also undergoes changes similar to the tissues of the vagina; becoming drier, thinner and less elastic with declining estrogen levels. This can lead to an increased risk of urinary tract infections or urine leakage. • Mood swings and depression. The drop in estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause can lead to depression, which can include anxiety, fears and mood swings. Depression during perimenopause and menopause is treated in much the same way as depression that strikes at any other time. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, be sure to talk to your doctor about finding a treatment that will work for you. In addition, your doctor will try to exclude any medical causes for your depression, such as thyroid problems. • Emotional and cognitive symptoms. Women in perimenopause often report a variety of cognitive and/or emotional symptoms including fatigue, memory problems, irritability, and rapid changes in mood.

CAUSES OF MENOPAUSE • Decline of reproductive hormones. As you approach your late 30’s your ovaries start making less estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate menstruation. Fewer potential eggs are maturing in your ovaries each month and ovulation is less predictable. Your fertility declines in part due to these

hormonal effects. In your 40’s these changes become more pronounced and your menstrual periods may become longer or shorter, heavier or lighter and more or less frequent until eventually your ovaries stop producing eggs and you have no more periods. (Mayo Clinic) • Hysterectomy, in which your uterus is removed but not your ovaries usually does not cause menopause. But an operation that removes both does cause menopause. Your periods will stop immediately and you are likely to have hot flashes and other menopausal signs and symptoms. (Mayo) • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are cancer therapies that can induce menopause, causing symptoms such as hot flashes during the course of treatment or within three to six months. • Approximately 1% of women experience menopause before age 40 due to primary ovarian insufficiency. This occurs when your ovaries fail to produce normal levels of reproductive hormones stemming from genetic factors or autoimmune disease. Complications: Several chronic medical conditions can develop after menopause: • Cardiovascular disease. When estrogen levels decline your risk of cardiovascular disease increases. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in women. You can reduce your risk of heart disease by stopping smoking, reducing high blood pressure, getting regular aerobic exercise and eating a diet that is low in saturated fats and high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables. • Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes bones to become brittle and weak, leading to an increased risk of fractures. Postmenopausal women are especially prone to fractures of the hip, wrist and spine. It is really important to get adequate calcium and vitamin D – about 1,200 to 1,500 mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D daily. Strength training and weight bearing exercise, such as walking and jogging are also essential.

Menopause

• Weight gain. A lot of women gain weight during the menopausal transition. You may need to eat less, maybe as many as 200 to 400 fewer calories a day, and exercise more just to maintain your weight.

TREATMENTS AND DRUGS Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) Treatments focus on relieving your signs and symptoms and on preventing or lessening chronic conditions that may occur with aging. To relieve the symptoms of menopause, doctors may prescribe menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). If used properly, MHT, (once called hormone replacement therapy or HRT) can be very good at relieving moderate to severe menopausal symptoms and prevents bone loss. But MHT also has some risks, especially if used for a long time. MHT can help with menopause by: • Reducing hot flashes and night sweats, and related problems such as poor sleep and irritability • Treating vaginal symptoms, such as dryness and discomfort, and related effects, such as pain during sex • Slowing bone loss • Possibly easing mood swings and mild depressive symptoms (MHT is not an antidepressant and not effective in treating depression.) For some women, MHT may in crease their chance of: • Blood clots • Heart attack • Stroke • Breast cancer • Gall bladder disease When deciding whether or not to use MHT, you and your doctor need to talk about the potential benefits and risks. Also ask about other treatment options. For example, lower dose estrogen products (vaginal creams, rings, and tablets) instead of MHT are a good choice for women who are only bothered by vaginal symptoms. And other drugs can help many women with bone loss. This information will help you decide if MHT is right for you. If you decide to try MHT, use the lowest dose that helps for the shortest time you need it. Hormone therapy. This can involve the use of either estrogen alone or with another hormone called progesterone. The two hormones normally help to regulate the menstrual cycle. Hormone therapy may cause side effects such as bleeding, bloating, breast tenderness or enlargement, headaches, mood changes and nausea. • Low-dose antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs. Antidepressants related to the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been shown to decrease menopausal hot flashes. • Testosterone Therapy. Testosterone is one of the hormones that contribute to healthy sexual function in women. Typically, testosterone therapy isn’t recommended to improve low sex drive and doctors are just not sure yet about the benefits and risks of testosterone therapy for menopausal women. 78

Alternative Remedies Phytoestrogens. These estrogens occur naturally in certain foods. There are two main types of phytoestrogens – isoflavones and lignans. Isoflavones are found in soybeans, chickpeas and other legumes. Lignans occur in flaxseed, whole grains and some fruits and vegetables. It is not known if the estrogen in these foods can relieve hot flashes and other menopausal signs and symptoms as their estrogen potency has been estimated to be much lower than estrogens produced by the body. Some studies have shown that these compounds may help however. If you have had breast cancer or are at risk, check with your doctor before supplementing your diet with isoflavone pills. Vitamin E. Reports are that vitamin E supplements can provide relief from mild hot flashes, but scientific studies haven’t proved its overall benefit and taking more than 400 iu may not be safe. Black Cohosh. An herbal preparation that has been popular in Europe for relief of hot flashes, this herb has become more popular in the United States. It is considered relatively safe, but there have been very few scientific studies done to establish the benefits. Research is ongoing. Natural Remedies Additionally, some menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes can be remedied by simply making some basic lifestyle changes. For example, dressing and eating to avoid being too warm, sleeping in a cool room and reducing stress. Avoid spicy foods and caffeine. Try deep breathing and stress reduction techniques including meditation and yoga. Preliminary studies show that yoga – an exercise regimen that involves controlled breathing, posing and meditation – may be effective in decreasing the number of hot flashes in perimenopausal women. If you are experiencing vaginal dryness, there are over –thecounter water-based vaginal lubricants (Astroglide, K-Y) or moisturizers (Replens, Vagisil). Additionally, these products are used for more severe dryness and release estrogen locally (a vaginal suppository, called Vagifem and a plastic ring, called an Estring . The ring, which must be replaced every three months contains a low-dose of estrogen and may not protect against osteoporosis.) Remember, menopause can be a positive time of life. Too often, myths foster misconceptions about this normal process of aging. Although menopause can cause some noticeable and uncomfortable changes, these can be effectively managed. Talk to your doctor about how to best manage menopause. Make sure the doctor knows your medical history and your family medical history. This includes whether you are at risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, and breast cancer. Remember that your decision is never final. You can, and should review it with your doctor during a checkup. Your needs may change, and so might what is known about menopause. Sources: Mayo Clinic, US Department of Health and Human Services, Medicinenet.com, WebMD, Womenshealth.gov, Cleveland Clinic

The Art of Cognitive Health Arguably, the brain is the most important part of our body. While the body certainly would shut down if our heart ceased to function, there’s no way that we could live so richly and so fully if we did not possess cognitive skills.

more omega-3, you would do well to consume foods that are fatty in nature, and of the seafood variety:

The art of stripping down life with our analyses, our interpretations and our perceptions say a good deal about who we are. If we have identity crises, it’s not our health or our heart to blame, it’s our power of cognition.

If you are a vegetarian and shudder at the thought of all these options, then consider ingesting flaxseed oil or amounts of walnuts, almonds, avocados and plant based foods and oils.

We have been conditioned to think of our body as a temple that needs to be constantly attended to, and mostly from the neck down. There’s joint and bone health, of course, and also nervous system health. But the brain is the control center for the well being and function of all these, but very often, we tend to forget about brain health. The brain is the vital organ that manages the thousands of processes and communication lines that maintain your body, and make it reach optimal levels of performance. Think of your brain as the engine in your Ferrari. The engine is the most critical component, and the rest of your body is basically your fuel. As people age, the rate of cognitive decline increases and therefore people’s ability to process information, concentrate, memorize, recollect, strategize and reason also declines. It doesn’t matter what type of setting you are in, whether you are in a public place, in a supermarket, these abilities are important for every day functioning. And naturally, as cognitive skills start to deteriorate, the ability to do simple tasks becomes more and more difficult. Cognition and Nutrition There are some key nutrients that have demonstrated that healthy cognitive function and overall brain health are optimized. These include Omega-3 fatty acids, SAM-e, Vitamins, C, D & E, B Vitamins, and Acetyl-L-Carnitine.

• Salmon • Anchovies • Sardines • Halibut • Fish oil supplements

And a multivitamin never hurts either. SAM-e is a naturally occurring molecule that is found in every living cell of the body and commonly associated with healthy brain function and mood. If you do take supplements, make sure that the SAM-e product is packaged in blister packs and enteric coated. Vitamin D is extremely essential to cognitive health and, and you can obtain this from foods, nutritional supplements or sunlight. Talk to your healthcare provider if you feel your Vitamin D levels are low or deficient. If you currently take a multivitamin, note that you still may not be meeting your basic nutritional needs, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). If you need additional vitamins, talk to your doctor about taking additional supplements. Mental Tactics Apart from your general well being and nutrition, keeping these tactics in mind will make you much more focused and sharp: • Stay Positive and connected: a glass half full is extremely important. Surround yourself with a strong support system and maintain a positive attitude, which can contribute to brain health. • Engage your brain through mental agility exercises, including doing puzzles, games and problem solving.

There are two important Omega-3 fatty acids that play a great role in both heart health and brain health as well, and these are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

• Try something new, like playing the piano or learning a foreign language to increase your memory skills and sharpen concentration.

They are necessary for cell membrane structure and integrity and also are considered to make cell to cell communication more effective. DHA promotes brain function in adults. In order to get

• Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep for optimal performance.

• Get some good solid exercise because it’s not only good for the heart, but good for the brain as well.

Cover Girl

FITNESS DOESN’T COME EASY

In today’s fast-paced world, people are attracted to magazines that emphasize celebrities and their fit bodies. Though celebrity admiration is a motivating health and fitness factor, people are often mislead on how to actually achieve a similar body that celebrities show off on magazine covers, TV and even blogs. This month’s cover girl, Cameron Diaz–from her first hit movie, The Mask and to her countless other movies to her work with 82

children–has earned admiration from several young ladies who aspired to look like her and achieve similar career successes. Diaz has an amazing body and she works hard to get it. Since summer is here, people will be hitting the gym to look like Diaz in that summer bikini. People do forget that these celebrities like Diaz have a team around them to help them keep fit and healthy in order to look glamorous. As an average person, we may not be able to afford those luxuries, but you can achieve similar results with dedication to a nutritious diet and exercise regimen. Even one of my clients, Helen (not her real name) who is a NYC Wall Street executive admires Diaz and asked me to help her get that “Cameron Cover Girl” body. First, let’s remember that Diaz started out as a model - so she has always been thin and tall. However, her body turned from slender to toned during training for Charlie’s Angels. Since then, Diaz has taken her exercise program seriously, and people should, too, if they want to achieve that toned body. Another factor to keep in mind is that success won’t happen overnight. It will take time. Diaz’s workouts are not easy and not for the faint of heart, so I wanted Helen to check with her doctor to make sure that her body would be able to endure the workout regimen I was recommending.

For instance, to achieve those toned legs, butt and muscular abdominal area that our cover girl is known for, I had Helen do the following tailored workout: • Plié Squats - The plie squat involves a variation on foot placement that helps target your leg muscles in different ways. You incorporate a bit more inner thigh than in traditional squats. These squats also target the lower abs and inner thighs area. • Butterfly Crunches – The abdominal butterfly crunch is an exercise that targets the upper abdominal muscles. It offers a twist on the common abdominal crunch exercise. Since your knees drop out to the side it makes it more difficult to maintain a flat spine which in turn works your abdominal muscles even more. • Alternating Planks – This targets the mid section and shoulder stability and chest/tricep toning. It will also assists in lower back strength and abdominals top down.

salad along with boiled eggs. • For lunch, I wanted Helen to eat a light meal. Light, lean summer salad with veggies and protein. Helen had cucumber salads mixed with tomatoes, carrots, and lean turkey meat. It was delicious and light and didn’t cause the mid-day drowsiness. • For dinner, portion control is vital. Helen ate a serving of fish or lean beef along with sweet potatoes and broccoli. Not only was this meal actually delicious, but it was healthy. To help suppress hunger, I suggested that Helen eat fruits and almonds throughout the day. Needless to say, Helen did get that “Cover Girl” body. With this dedication to fitness and health, anyone can achieve their ideal body and “fit factor.” As always, I advise people to consult a doctor and nutritionist before beginning any new workout regimen.

All exercises target the quads, hamstrings, glutes and abs, but remember exercises, alone, won’t get you a rocking body. I recommended to Helen that she eat a hearty breakfast to maintain muscle growth and provide plenty of energy for the rest of the day.

The Best Ice Creams & Gelatos in America

T

he thermostat indicates that it’s time to cool off and America has different versions of how that will happen. Some race off to the beach; some drink cold beer at barbecues and yet others turn their air conditioners on full blast. But most of America will indulge their sweet tooth in one of their favorite pastimes of the season: eating ice creams and gelatos. There has been an explosion of hand-crafted ice cream and gelato parlors throughout the country; but with every creamery and store touting their product as the best, how are you to truly know which ones stand out – and which don’t? Lest we offend some die-hard fans of their favorite creameries, let us mention that these are only some of the many incredible ice creameries out there, and for the sake of our sanity (and yours), we’ve listed shops in major metropolis areas. We’ll also note that some not to be missed stores include Salem Valley Farm in Lyme, Connecticut, and Mad Martha’s of Martha’s Vineyard. www.salemvalleyfarmsicecream.com/

Atlanta, Georgia People still cannot get enough of the famous Bruster’s ice cream flavors in Atlanta. The ice cream store has more than 140 flavors and the shop is loaded with cookies, candies and other sweet goodies. The store serves up to 24 flavors of ice cream along with yogurt, sorbet, sherbert and Italian ices. Some cool flavors include Cherry Pecan, Chocolate Sherbert and Cherry Cobbler. www.brusters.com 86

California In Northern California (Berkeley, to be precise), Ici which is run by a former pastry chef from Chez Panisse (Mary Canales), has tons of age old traditions like root beer floats that are married to futuristic tastes like brandied cherry and burnt caramel. Every day, Ici offers eleven flavors of ice cream. www.ici-icecream.com In Southern California (Santa Barbara), try your hand at eating McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams that first opened in 1949 and is serving customers still today. McConnell’s master ice cream maker, Michael Vierra, VP of Operations, not only has a passion for creating fine ice creams, but also learning from his mistakes. In every sense of the word! One day, while he was making a batch of French Vanilla ice cream, his machines mistakenly added a large quantity of maple syrup to the batch, and he created his best-selling flavor Vanilla/Maple Mistake in an instant. There are also franchise opportunities at McConnells. www.mcconnells.com

Colorado Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato has beaten out some of the more well-known ice cream shops like Ben & Jerry’s time and again in Colorado. This store practically owns Boulder County when it comes to ice creams, and there are five stores in this area alone. Glacier offers around 80 ice creams at its store on a daily basis. Some of the most popular flavors include Coffee Caramel Crunch, Peanut Butter Blast & Chai, and Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. www.glaciericecream.com

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams: Want a sampling of esoteric flavors such as Rhubarb Rose, Wildberry Lavender or Meyer Lemon Yoghurt? Jeni’s has such a loyal following and several Ohio locations. All of Jeni’s ice creams sauces, pralines and marshmallows are handcrafted in the kitchen and the business is family owned and operated since 2002 in Columbus, OH. www.jenisicecreams.com

In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Annabelle’s ice cream parlor is frequented by die hard enthusiasts and ice cream fans who come in all sorts of inclement weather (and the sunshine) to sample Lewis Palosky’s offerings. Flavors like Black Raspberry, a New England favorite, pops on the palette and the plate, and even the other traditional flavors like vanilla really come to life at Annabelle’s. www.annabellesicecream.com

New York L’Arte del Gelato: It may be gelato but it’s the finest Italian import since The Godfather. This month, for instance, the store is offering Amarena Variegato (milk with sour cherries gelato), and everything is prepared in small batches to ensure freshness. There are three locations of this fine brand in the city: in Chelsea Market, West Village and Lincoln Center Plaza. www.lartedelgelato.com

Capogiro makes artisanal gelato that uses hand-picked produce and milk from grass-fed and hormone free cows. These practices draw from Pennsylvania’s rich farming history. The store opened its doors in 2002, and was conceived and still run by a family who thought of the idea while vacationing in Italy.

Boston prides itself for being one of the best ice cream towns in the country, if not the best. The concept of the original ice-cream parlor chain is widely thought to have begun with Steve’s Ice Cream, a parlor chain that helped create the concept of the super premium ice cream and created the entire concept of customizable blend ins. Toscanini’s is an ice creamery that has been touted as the best place in Beantown. Toscanini’s ice cream has been a consistent winner of local accolades and magazine awards. Even The New York Times has called it “the best ice cream in the world.” The place is open every day from 8am – 11pm and while Ben & Jerry’s may make 35,000 gallons of ice cream a day, Toscanini’s has over 400 different flavors but only 40 in regular rotation in the store. Savor staples like French and Lemon Vanilla and also indulge your senses in flavors like Bourbon Black Pepper and Grasshopper Vanilla. Although, rumor has it that the crowd keeps coming back time and again for their Strawberry Ice Cream. www.tosci.com

At Shaine’s of Maine Ice Cream, visitors have been privy to gourmet offerings for 30 years. All ice creams are made in a plant in Maine, and the company also makes offerings by the pint, gallon and also its seadog biscuits. It has over 90 flavors to offer. www.shainsofmaine.com/

Pennsylvania

You’ll find all of Italy’s favorite gelati flavors like Nocciola, Pistachio as well as innovative flavors like Rosemary Honey’s Goat Milk. www.capogirogelato.com

Texas Another famous gelateria in the Austin, Texas, is the ever popular Caffe Teo whose members both appreciate and demand the best gelati in Texas. It has been voted Austin’s best gelato and espresso and still holds up to the standards that Teo (Mateo Lee) created five years ago. Here, you can indulge not only in gelati, but also other frappucino sweet treats such as Vanilla Steamers and Bottled Root Beer. www.caffeteo.com So we hope you get out on a bright sunny day and enjoy the ice cream parlor in your area!

life

There’s Something About Cameron Diaz America loved Cameron in There’s Something About Mary. Dozens of women empathized with the sweet Kimberly Wallace in My Best Friend’s Wedding – even to the point where Julia Roberts ended up looking like the red-headed villain at the end. Cameron Diaz has starred in so many mainstream favorite movies that she’s practically the country’s poster child for wholesome good looks and a girly vivaciousness. Born in San Diego in 1972, Diaz is the daughter of an importexport agent, Emilio Diaz, and daughter of a mother with English, German and Cherokee ancestry. Diaz was initially (surprise!) a model, and with Elite Model Management. Her memorable roles in movies like Vanilla Sky, Shrek (Princess Fiona) and Being John Malkovich cemented her status in the annals of American movies. Beginnings As a youngster at the age of 21, Diaz auditioned for a part in the movie The Mask, even though she had had no acting experience. Ever the perfectionist, as soon as she got the part she took acting lessons. Her initial introduction into the Hollywood movie circle was through independent films which didn’t climb the blockbuster charts. Even so, a massing fan base found her extremely charming in the movie that brought her name to everyone’s lips: My Best Friend’s Wedding. In the movie, the often unbearable shrieking Kimberly Wallace, Diaz charactor, is both vulnerable and open. She is a wholesome, truly romantic girlfriend who lovingly dotes on her fiancee’s ex, Julia Roberts. Through the twists and turns, we eventually fall in love with Diaz’s Kimberly and by the end of the movie we realize how powerful, yet subtle the performance was. There’s Something About Mary In 1998, a romantic comedy directed by the Farrelly brothers opened at the box office with stars Diaz, Matt Dillon, and Ben Stiller. The plot itself is extremely odd, and funny, but it made Diaz’s talents stand out deliciously. After all, who could forget the scene at the bar with her hair? The performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Subsequently, she starred in other movies that snagged her the same honor, including Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky and Gangs of New York. She has said, “Your regrets aren’t what you did, but what you didn’t do. So I take every opportunity.” Her perfectionism really doesn’t stop with the acting. She loves shopping and she loves food. “I get so excited when I see food, I go crazy. I spend hours arranging my baskets so that everything fits in and nothing gets squashed. I’m really anal about it, actually.” Diaz is more spunky than people realize. She has a devil-may-care attitude, and has gone through her usual string of Hollywood

boyfriends, from Justin Timberlake to model Paul Sculfor. Of course, there is nothing unusual in this, especially given that her innate gifts and a certain element of stubbornness has guided her career to rise in meteoric fashion. Unlike some actors and actresses who are comfortable in “typecast” roles, Diaz has dared to play a wide range of charactors, from the sweet, blonde girlfriend (There’s Something About Mary, My Best Friend’s Wedding); the badass, butt-kicking angel in Charlie’s Angels; the saucy Princess Fiona in the Shrek series to the angst-ridden, hysterical girlfriend with stalkerish tendencies in Vanilla Sky. Few actresses take on a gamut of roles that challenge their chops – and we must keep in mind that Diaz did get her start as a trained actress. If we look at some of the role, we see a woman who is not completely content to sit and let the grass grow beneath her feet. Sure, she’ll always be the “hot” girl on the screen, as in The Holiday, a romantic comedy when she seduces and falls in love with Jude Law. Diaz has always had an affinity for romantic comedies and this is a genre she has played and mastered over several years. “Acting is something different to everybody,” she has said. “I just know that if you watch an actor get better and better, I think that’s them just understanding themselves better and better.” As her career matures she continues to choose roles that showcase her real versatility. In My Sister’s Keeper, Diaz plays a very concerned mother who decides to have another baby to give a kidney to her youngest daughter who suffers from leukemia. Diaz plays a role that is much more emotionally layered and complex. Her charactor is a concerned, terribly frustrated mother who is both anxious and determined to do the best for her children. For her performance, she received a Teen Choice Award. Upcoming Movies In June 2009, Hollyywood recognized Cameron Diaz with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So, what’s next on the cards for Diaz? Once again, she gives the voiceover for Princess Fiona in Shrek Forever After that debuts in the box office this summer. She also stars in Knight and Day which is an upcoming action comedy film with co-star Tom Cruise (the first time Cruise and Diaz have been on the screen together since Vanilla Sky). The success of Shrek and its sequels alone have made her an extremely popular actress. Now it’s time for Diaz to up the ante on her roles if she wants to earn that elusive acting crown – the Oscar.

Book Clubs

Read All About It: How to Start Your Own Book Club By Megan Sarah Johnson

In this modern age, we take an endless amount of things for granted. Our friends, our family, the opportunities that present themselves to us on a daily basis. But one activity ingrained in us in elementary school is often pushed to the back burner come adulthood: Reading. We drop thousands of dollars on fancy SAT tutors to prepare students for the English portion. We teach our children the alphabet the second they have the ability to form words. So why do so many teenagers and adults completely ignore reading for pleasure? Many people chalk it up to time commitments, or simply a dislike of reading. But the truth is, if you turned off the tube for a few more hours a week, Heidi Montag and the rest of the cast of The Hills wouldn’t notice. And who hasn’t been able to find at least one book they like in their educational history? If you don’t like to read, chances are you simply haven’t found the type that’s right for you. But with a community of friends and strangers around you to share the journey from beginning to end of a book, reading can be an absolute adventure. Book clubs have popped up all around the world, and are now more popular than ever. Want to start your own? We’ve got a how-to guide that will spark your literary love in no time! 90

Defining your “bookish” parameters Before you start recruiting members for your own book club, it’s important to determine what type of club you want to have. Do you simply want to join a club, rather than do the legwork? While we definitely give television a heavy dose of blame for distracting us from reading, there has been major progress due to book clubs started on television shows. One of the most famous fans of reading out there is none other than Oprah Winfrey. She began Oprah’s Book Club in 1996 due to her frustration that people didn’t seem to read anymore. What began as Oprah’s desire to encourage literacy snowballed into one of the world’s largest book clubs. Morning shows such as The Today Show have followed Oprah’s trend with great success. Joining these clubs is easy because they don’t require extensive time commitments. Simply sign up and starting reading. But if you want to start from scratch, consider these key points first. Determine your Book Club’s focus Do you want your book club to have a specific focus? There are millions of topics to choose from, such as author-specific clubs. Have you always wanted to read John Steinbeck, but was afraid to tackle it alone? There are probably a hundred other intimidated

readers out there just like you. Or say you’re interested in books by 19th century female writers. There are endless options for what to read, but you’ve got to nail down the central focus of your club before you go around advertising it. However, if you’re looking to stick with the general book club philosophy without a specific focus, assign each member a specific month when they are responsible for choosing the group’s required reading. If you’re the club’s starter, you have the responsibility of choosing the club’s first read. However, you also have the responsibility to play host or hostess first. Always have beverages on hand, such as coffee, tea and water. It’s good to have simple hors’d oeuvres as well, such as crackers and cheese, or fruit and veggies. It doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy, just welcoming. Your guests will be thrilled that you put some thought into their visit. Sending an invitation: tapping Traditional and Social Media You wouldn’t host a birthday party without sending out some sort of invitation, would you? Even if it’s just an email sent to friends, family or acquaintances, get the word out about your new venture. If you’re interested in recruiting strangers for the club, post an advertisement on the bulletin boards of your local library or bookstore. Leave your phone number and first name for prospective club members to call. However, if you plan on having your first meeting at your home, don’t post your address on public boards. It’s not a good idea to give the entire world a free invitation to your home. However, the library, local bookstores, or even church basements are great locations if you want to leave your messy living room behind. And if you really want to have fun with it, hand-made invitations are a surefire way to get a positive response from prospective members. Social networking isn’t just for college kids with extra time on their hands. Everyday Americans have turned to networking sites for everything from store coupons to career prospects. But when it comes to finding club members, social networking sites are a goldmine. Create an event invitation with a snazzy title on Facebook or MySpace, and send it out to all your friends. If you’re a Twitter fanatic, send a tweet out for all your followers to see, and use hash tags like #reading and #bookclubs so other interested parties will be led to your profile. Google Buzz and LinkedIn are other popular social networking platforms that can bring people together based on their similar interests. If there was ever a place to easily start and maintain a book club, the internet is it. With nothing but an internet connection and few books, anyone can start a book club from their bed or their backyard. There’s an endless amount of resources for finding club members online. Popular website www.meetup.com helps people with similar interests find others to meet and form offline clubs in their local community. Users simply enter their zip code and their chosen topic, and the site gives a time and location to meet. The site has seen immense

popularity in the political realm, where politicians have recruited thousands of volunteers and activists for their cause. The popular website Book Club Girl serves as a meeting place for women around the world with a love of reading. The group already has almost 5000 followers on twitter, and features regular on-air radio interviews with popular authors such as Rebecca Wells and Todd Johnson. Authors are not the elusive characters they once were; while you may have a serious struggle getting F. Scott Fitzgerald on the phone, many authors are absolutely eager to share their stories with the public by answering questions with book clubs. If your author is unable to appear in person, many are willing to answer questions over the phone. By using conference call features on your phone, groups can communicate with authors from across the world with a press of a button. Recruiting authors is a very successful method to maintain high membership in your club. Nobody wants to be the club member who hasn’t read the required book, especially in the face of the book’s author. Something for Everyone While many people complain about Harry Potter addicts and “Twihards” (otherwise known as hard-core Twilight fans), one of the best aspects of these super-fandom literary trends is that people who may not read on a regular basis find great pleasure in books. Many parents will stop at nothing to encourage their teenagers to read more. That’s why they’re so pleased to see their kids going crazy for the latest Stephanie Meyer or Harry Potter novel, two of the most popular book series out there right now. But it’s not only teenagers that are going buck wild for Bella Swan and her vampire cohorts. Everyone from housewives to college kids are hot on the trail of popular book series, and many of them are turning to book clubs as a fun way to read them. If you want your book club to be focused on a series, get in on the fun and use the series’ characters for inspiration. Consider having a quidditch match in your backyard after your club finishes each Harry Potter book. People want to have fun, and if they’re hesitant about getting into recreational reading, your outlandish ideas may be just what they need to get interested. Whether you’re a literary expert or just dipping your toes in the waters of reading, there’s a book club out there with your name on it. When you’ve finally determined what type of club you want to have, there are endless resources out there to help you make it happen. Even if it’s just a local bulletin board or a fancy hand-made invitation, recruit club members with your personal touch. The changing facial of social media and web 2.0 means you have extensive options for finding club members on the internet, or you can simply join an existing club like Oprah’s and sit back on the couch. No matter what type of club you choose, it’s important that we teach our children how fundamental the reading experience is. Give them a literary role model to look up to. By demonstrating an interest in reading, they will copy your example with enthusiasm!

Refinancing Your Home if Foreclosure is Not an Option A person’s home is truly their castle. For most people, a room is more than a roof over their head, it’s a place to seek refuge, a nest of essentials that you have come to love and cherish. A home is beyond where the heart is: it is the heart. Even though you’ve had a hard day at work, or felt as though you’ve been walking on eggshells all day, you have free reign to do what you want at your home. So, a foreclosure notice can not only be shocking to you, it can be downright debilitating. Even if you are not in this dire situation, you may be in a financial pinch, and want to get some financial legroom to make all your payments on time. So, how can someone get out of this situation? Well, there are options, and we are here to discuss two of them: either refinancing your home; or the “Making Home Affordable” (also known as the Obama Plan*). A lot of people are confused about which option they should choose, so we’ve try to crystallize them for you. REFINANCING YOUR HOME OPTION You’ve probably received mail with offers enticing you to refinancing your home and chances are you may be seriously considering one of them. The promise of an APR as low as, 3% or so (which are teaser rates) seems too good to be true. Usually the fine print states the the rate increases after a few months. 92

It sounds like it has never been a better time to refinance your home, but chances are that you will surmount several difficulties before refinancing actually goes through. Mortgage rates are currently slightly below 5% but the credit scores that lenders are looking for as well as the amount of closing costs will preclude several people from actually going through with the refinance. If you are over the age of 40, and close to retirement age, the idea of refinancing sounds particularly appealing because it could free up your retirement savings and give you more cushion once you retire. Here are a few caveats to watch out for as you refinance 1. Consider your credit score. Several companies do not want to touch any consumer whose credit score is less than 700 these days. Chalk it up to the after effects of the recession 2. Most single family homes today need to fall within the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Limits (typically up to $417,000 in most areas and as high as over $700,000 in populated metropolis like New York and San Francisco). 3. Be prepared to wait for at least 90 days for your refinance to go through. It is not an overnight process. 4. Be prepared to furnish a lot of information when you submit your mortgage to be refinanced: they will ask you for everything from your profit and loss statement (if you are self-employed); your paystubs to your income tax returns in addition to other ad hoc requests.

Lenders typically use one type of score to determine your eligibility, called the FICO score. In addition, they will fish for information from several other credit reporting agencies including Experian©, Equifax©, and TransUnion©. Also, chances are that your home has readjusted in value, so don’t be shocked if the value of your mortgage and refinancing options are substantially lower than the value of the original loan you took out. Typically, lenders will need to see some sort of actual equity in your house before agreeing to give you a refinancing option. If your current mortgage is less than 80% of the value of your home, or less than 75% of the value of your condo or co-op, then you should be able to get a refinance, but caveat on the appraisal process! Many times, appraisers will look at surrounding homes in your area (including foreclosures) to get a sense of how much a property is worth, so the appraisal value may not even be accurate. If your mortgage’s value is 80% to 105% of your home’s value, and you are making payments currently (and the value of your home is current), and if your loan was brought on by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, then you may still be able to refinance your home under the Obama Plan. Help is free so beware of foreclosure rescue scams Foreclosure rescue and mortgage modification scams are a growing problem. Homeowners must protect themselves so they do not lose money—or their home. Scammers make promises

that they cannot keep, such as guarantees to “save” your home or lower your mortgage, oftentimes for a fee. Scammers may pretend that they have direct contact with your mortgage servicer when they do not. THE OBAMA PLAN (THE HOME LOAN MODIFICATION OPTION) The main attractiveness of the Obama Plan is that it offers lenders and borrowers some pretty big subsidies to try to stem the wave of foreclosures; what does this mean for you? It means that borrowers who have had financial losses or suffered job setbacks and cannot afford to pay their regular mortgage payments are able to get that life boat that they desperately need. What exactly will the “Making Home Affordable” plan give you? The aim of the plain is help millions of home owners reduce their monthly payments. This is to help homeowners whose property values have decreased, and those who owe more than 80 percent of the home’s value. One part of the plan is the home modification arrangement, which is a great option if you cannot or do not want to refinance. The home loan modification will definitely reduce your monthly payments but it will tack on additional years (typically 4-5) to your mortgage life span. But there are some caveats to this plan because not everyone will be eligible. Here are some things you should know: 1. The plan will only help those who earn enough money to pay their modified loans. There is definitely hope for those who have lost their jobs or have reduced income, but you have to demonstrate that you have the resources to make these new payments. In order to qualify for this option, you need to demonstrate that your monthly housing payment needs to exceed more than 31% of your gross monthly income. 2. You will need to show that you can indeed make your monthly payments on time. This means you will need to show some proof of income. 3. Your loan amount cannot really exceed current Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac loan limits. 4. It is okay if you are behind or current in your payments. You are asking for the loan modification because your current income cannot sustain your monthly payments. The best way to get this loan modification is to approach your local Department of Housing and Urban Development chapter and get some free counseling. They will also gather all your financial information on your behalf and submit it to your mortgage provider. Whatever approach you try, remember that the most critical part of getting approved will be you’re a combination of your credit scores, your debt to income ratio and the credibility that you will pay the loans back. And the real truth the underwriter actually wants you to keep your mortgage because they would rather get something from you than nothing at all. So, remember to keep your chin up and explore these options because you and millions of Americans are in the same boat – and the government is trying to throw a life vest to you to help you keep your home. *Learn About Making Your Home Affordable and more options at http://makinghomeaffordable.gov/

Job-Search Mistakes Everybody Makes by Nicole Crimaldi

Many of you are making 3 serious job search mistakes. We need to clear these up if you want to get a job. resume and cover letter. 1 Wrong. In a perfect world, your resume is more of a formality than You believe your job search is completely dependent on your

a necessity. If someone already knows you or has received an excellent recommendation of you, they are more focused on getting to know you in the interview rather than picking through the details of your resume. A bad resume is definitely getting cut, but a great resume does not guarantee you the job. Let’s be honest, I don’t care how many cool internships you’ve had or what your GPA is: many employers feel that an entry-level candidate is an entry-level candidate. In large companies you may have to meet a certain GPA or major requirement, but much past that, it’s all about you. Your personal brand is what lands you a job. Not your resume. Your personal brand should match online, offline, in your personality and in your appearance. The way you write your LinkedIn profile, what you say online, and who you meet in person are a few important aspects of a job seekers personal brand. The Internet is the only tool you have used to aid your job search. Wrong. I’ve been doing a lot of research for Job Search Boot Camp and have found career expert, after career expert claiming that 80% of open positions are not posted online. They also claim that the vast majority of job seekers rely solely on the Internet to find a new job. To turn this idea into simple math, this means that roughly 80% of the people are going for 20% of the jobs. Not only are those online jobs way more competitive, they are most likely more generic than those you’d find offline. So what does this mean for you? It means that if you’re smart, you’d be playing in the offline field where you’d be one of the 20% looking at 80% of the jobs. If you’re willing to go against the crowd, get a little uncomfortable and stop hiding behind your computer screen, I think you’ll have a much shorter job search than most. Getting offline means: • Pick up the phone. • Pick it up again after no one calls you back. • Deal with people who may not want to talk to you. • Ask for recommendations and introductions. • Go to a lot of coffee meetings and informational interviews. • Make a list of companies you’d like to work for then use online tools to see who is connected to those companies. Once you connect with them, take the relationship offline. • Stop judging your progress by the number of online job applications you sent to a random company where you know no one. Instead, monitor your progress based on how many meetings you set up. • Set up meetings with all of your favorite professors. Chat, listen and get career advice. Maybe they will introduce you to some

great people too. • Go to a lot of events whether they are networking events, Greek life events, campus speakers, or parties (true story: I got a job offer by connecting with someone at a party). You can rock an event even if you are super shy. More on this in the guide. • Ask everyone you meet a lot of questions about themselves and what they do. People love talking about themselves. The more you talk about them, the more they like you and want to help you. • You’ll also learn a lot of things about a lot of industries by talking to people. Regardless of if their industries are similar to yours, having these discussion will broaden your perspective and conversations when you start interviewing. • Don’t say “I need a job” when you are engaging in these offline activities. Rather, ask them about their job. • Email authors, bloggers, speakers and introduce yourself. • Talk to people at the bar, at Cubs games, and on the treadmill (another true story: I have made serious career connections at all 3 of the mentioned locations). • Tap into your Greek system or alumni network. For people like me that are still obsessed with their sorority and college, receiving an email from a current student would make my day. I’m sure many others feel the same. • Disarm people you meet by asking, “what would you do if you were in my shoes?” Job searching is like dating. If you’re looking to date with the intention of finding a partner, you can use online tools to meet people, but after that it has to be taken offline to lead to something more. If you’re in the dating game, you don’t just sit in your apartment hoping someone will magically ring the doorbell and appear. Dating is a process of meeting people, getting to know people, getting rejected, finding out what you want and don’t want, and getting yourself out there. Apply the same strategies here. You believe networking yields instant results. This includes Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Wrong. After all this research, I think the next guide I write will be for those just starting college. News flash: successful networking doesn’t start 2 months before graduation. If you’ve missed the boat on this one, be prepared to spend some time building relationships. I get emails that say “I don’t get it! I called them and they didn’t call back!” or “These people liked me and said to keep in touch. How annoying! I want a job offer now!” I’m sorry if you believed signing up for Twitter would single handedly land you a job. This is going to be a process. It’s going to take time. Be patient. I know that you hate not having the perfect answer when your friends and relatives ask what you’re doing after graduation. Build your job search around real people and real relationships and I’ll bet my high heels that you’ll find real career happiness too.
