What is Tile Variation?
Digital technology has evolved to allow multiple colour tones or designs in a particular shade. This unique variation is all about celebrating the intense mix of shades which emulate natural surfaces.
These icons will indicate the level of variation you can expect from your outdoor porcelain pavers.
Always dry lay V3 and V4 prior to laying.
V0: Very Uniform Appearance
V1: Uniform Appearance
V2: Slight Variation
V3: Moderate Variation
V4: Substantial Variation
What’s the Difference Between an Indoor and an Outdoor Tile?
Tiles are not just a pretty face; they play an important part in keeping you safe in areas that might have a risk of slipping. Try touching the tiles to see how different they feel; some tiles feel smoother, another may have a light sandpaper feel, others may have a bit more resistance.
We measure these different surface resistances by a Slip Rating, this makes it easy to determine whether a tile is suitable for different indoor areas like bathrooms or kitchens, or outdoor areas like a patio or around a pool.
For residential purposes we mainly use a Pendulum Test, which gives a result between P0-P5. P0 being a very high slip risk and P5 very low risk.
Textured Tiles
Some tiles are more textured than others, making them even safer in areas which become wet and slippery.
When shopping for outdoor tiles, look for textured finishes with increased slip resistance.

External Floor Area Preparation
Whether you plan to install porcelain, ceramic tiles or natural stone to an outside area, there are a couple of important points to note about the substrate or base surface that the tile or stone will be laid on. While the substrate will be unseen in the finished project, the quality and thoroughness of your preparation will affect the finished quality and performance over time.
The substrate or base should be clean, solid and free of movement. An ideal substrate is a reinforced concrete slab with a minimum thickness of 75mm thick or 100mm thick if the surface is likely to encounter any vehicle traffic on a path or driveway. The concrete should sit over well compacted crushed rock. All concrete shrinks so any new concrete slab needs to be dry and fully cured (for a minimum of 28 days) before tiling commences.
Ensure any outdoor base has adequate movement joints built-in to allow for expansion and contraction and any structural movement in the substrate. Tiles should never cover any structural movement joints in the substrate; the joint must be carried through to the surface of the tiling. Other movement joints will be required in the tile or stone at a maximum of 4.5 metres apart. If tile or stone is to be laid against a pool edge or against the house or fixed structure, there must also be a movement joint at this point.
Drainage, appropriate to your particular application, is an important consideration to prevent moisture from building up around the substrate or getting under the tiling and creating moisture-related issues in future. Adequate drainage will also keep the tiled surface clear of water when the project is completed. The substrate should always fall towards a drain or a drainage point away from the house or any buildings at a rate of 1:100 or 10mm over 1 metre.

Natural stone has a beauty that transcends the ever changing landscape of today’s design trends. Travertine is a beautiful and extremely versatile natural stone that is particularly loved in Australia as it can be run throughout the home and into the backyard for a seamless living space. A little maintenance will be required though to keep your stone looking its fabulous best for the long term.
Sealing Natural Stone
◊ Sealing stone with a penetrating sealer is recommended to assist future cleaning and longevity
◊ Penetrating stone sealers soak into the stone and provide a barrier to stains, but still allow the stone to ‘breathe’, unlike some old fashioned topical sealers that almost acted like a varnish on the surface
◊ A quality penetrating sealer can last up to 15 years depending on the amount of wear the surface is subject to
◊ A sealer will not protect a surface if a stain is left untreated. Rather, the sealer gives you time to clean off any stain or liquid before the stone or tile is marked permanently. Ensure you clean all stains immediately to avoid staining.
Cleaning Tips
◊ Outdoors; regular dirt and grime can be removed by sweeping then hosing the surface
◊ Apply a pH neutral cleaner with a stiff broom to remove heavy dirt
◊ Special purpose stone cleaner will help keep algae at bay
◊ Interiors; regularly dust and mop floors using clean, non-treated micro-fibre wipes. Prompt removal of dirt, sand and other abrasive material will protect your stone from scratching
◊ Clean up any spills, such as red wine, as soon as possible
◊ NEVER use acidic products on your stone
◊ Keep in mind cleaning products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acidic products may dull or etch the surface of calcareous stones. Some scouring powders or creams contain abrasives that may scratch certain natural stone products.
We recommend Miracle Impregnator Sealer
All natural stone tiles should be sealed after installation and before grouting with a good quality, penetrating stone sealer.
When sealing, the surface must be clean and dry. Never seal outdoors if rain is predicted within 12 hours. Never seal in extreme heat or windy conditions. It’s a great idea to always test the sealer in a corner before applying to large areas.

Miracle Tile and Stone Cleaner is a concentrated pH neutral cleaner developed specifically for regular cleaning of all grouts, ceramic & porcelain tile, marble, granite, limestone, slate and travertine. Strong enough for most difficult stains yet gentle enough for daily use.
It’s a good idea to first conduct a trial on a sample piece of the stone, or in an inconspicuous area of the finished tiling before using cleaning products.

Glass mosaic tiles are the ideal choice for lining your pool. Properly grouted and installed, they are almost completely waterproof, won’t wear out fade or discolour, and they look amazing! Take note that combining the blue of the water with coloured tiles can change the tones of both, similar to mixing watercolour paints in an art class.
