hile I was writing this piece, my wife informed me that the world has lost one of the pioneers of modern health and fitness. Jack Lalanne died Jan 23/11 at age 96 in his home in California. Jack was often referred to as the godfather of fitness. Lalanne spent his entire adult life preaching about the benefits of exercise, fitness and nutrition. He was the creator of many of the modern exercise machines you see today in your fitness center and was world renowned for his feats of strength and fitness from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. The multi-billion-dollar fitTrent E. Nellis - Publisher, Vista Magazine ness culture we now know may owe its start to Jack. Lalanne had been an inspiration to people across North America for generations. His defiance of old age and his vibrant personality exemplified what it meant for a senior to be healthy. Jack Lalanne’s mission was simple: he wanted to help people to help themselves feel better, look better and live longer. He was the author of several health, fitness and nutrition books, videos and audio CD’s. Everything Jack accomplished was geared towards helping others realize what he had discovered. We can drastically slow the aging process by taking the time to nurture our bodies through exercise and nutrition. Jack lived by this philosophy and he was famous for his prophetic statements that became known as “Lalanneisms”. Here are a few of my favourites. Your waistline is your lifeline. Don’t exceed the feed limit. Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips. People don’t die of old age, they die of inactivity. You eat every day, you sleep every day and your body was made to exercise every day. If man makes it, don’t eat it. It’s not what you do some of the time that counts; it’s what you do all of the time that counts. Eat right and you can’t go wrong. Lalanne made it his mission in life to pursue wellness and to encourage anyone that would listen to him to do the same. The best thing we can do to honour the memory of Jack Lalanne is to help ourselves live healthier, better quality lives. He made it to the ripe old age of 96 by doing the right things and by having the proper attitude. I leave you with one more of Jack’s famous Lalanneisms “Your health account is like your bank account: the more you put in, the more you can take out.” Rest in peace Mr Lalanne; you clearly have earned it. Apparently, social media is inescapable no matter how much we resist it. You can now follow us on Facebook and on twitter at twitter.com/ vistapublisher I will be tweeting regularly to keep you apprised of our ongoing pursuit of health and wellness.

h, February. The time of year when dreams of white sandy beaches and tropical sun are all that keep us going. The promise of spring seems too far away; the excitement of the holidays is long past. And that holiday over-indulgence may still be fighting the battle with our resolutions (and hopefully losing). This is the perfect time for a little retail therapy! Canadian shoe icon John Fluevog reminds us that buying quality footwear is not only a fashion statement, it’s also an environmental action. The mass proliferation of cheap, poorly made items that don’t last is, as John says, “chewing up our environment.” His high-quality, hand-crafted, funky shoes are the stuff of real artistry; yet they are also built to last and repairable when they eventually do wear down. Read more about John Fluevog’s journey of selfdiscovery in our interview on page 22. And if shoes aren’t going to cut it, we’ve got a great many strategies to help you feel your best as you ride out the winter storms. Did you know, for example, that chiropractics may be the best thing you can do for your cardiovascular system? Or that krill oil is more potent than the omega-3 supplement you might be taking? Fight the good fight against cold and flu, obesity, and hormone disruption. We’ve even got an antioxidant-rich recipe that lets you have your health-conscious chocolate cake, and eat it too! Speaking of chocolate, we can’t forget about Valentine’s Day. Love it or hate it, it’s one of the most commercial events of the year, so check out Michael Bloch’s advice on making this February 14th a little greener. Here’s to enjoying the big day with your sweetie, a child, your aging parent, or whomever you feel is worthy of sharing that chocolate cake with.

Chiro for Cardio:

The Cardiovascular-Chiropractic Health Connection By Dr. Christian Guenette

T

he perpetually busy corporate executive stays late for yet another last-minute deadline, putting the finishing touches on a multi-million dollar deal. He’s worked hard to get to this point in his career. This latest success just might get him that promotion he so deserves. He imagines the placard on the door: Mr. Smith, CEO of XYZ Corp… In his desire to deliver the document by hand, he runs up the three flights of stairs leading to his boss’ office. Halfway up the stairs, he stops. Gripped with an unbelievable pressure over his chest and an intense pain shooting into his left arm, he finds it difficult to catch his breath. “What’s happening?” he thinks, as his heart slows to a stop. With nobody around to recognize he is having a heart attack, this eager, type-A corporate exec makes one final wish: that he hadn’t spent as much time focused on things that caused him stress, had taken more time to exercise and eat right, and had spent more time having fun with family and friends. Unfortunately, the above story is an all-toocommon occurrence. According to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, there are approximately 70,000 heart attacks each year in Canada alone. Out of those who suffer an attack, 23 percent will not survive long enough to make the changes that could have saved their lives. The sad truth: hypertension is listed as the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. Of all the causes, high blood pressure is one of the most dangerous because it is considered a ‘silent killer’ – there are no obvious symptoms that signal the need for people to pay closer attention to the behaviours that are likely going to kill them. An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure All experts in the field of cardiovascular health will tell you that the best way to deal with cardiovascular disease is to make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Monitor your blood pressure regularly, and replace bad habits with healthier ones. The following list includes a number of behavior

10

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

modifications you can adopt to help lower your blood pressure, and consequently your risk for cardiovascular disease: • Don’t smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product • Lose weight if you’re overweight • Exercise regularly • Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat • Limit your sodium, alcohol and caffeine intake • Try relaxation techniques or biofeedback If You’re Already at Risk If you find you’ve waited too long, and discover that you already have high blood pressure, one of the more immediate ways you can ‘treat’ it is with the use of anti-hypertensive medications prescribed by your MD. There are a number of pharmacological agents that will work to bring your blood pressure down. Some of the more popular choices include: • Diuretics: These drugs help your body get rid of extra sodium and fluid so that your blood vessels don’t have to hold so much fluid. • Beta-blockers: These drugs block the effects of adrenaline. • Alpha-blockers: These drugs help your blood vessels stay open. • ACE inhibitors: These drugs prevent your blood vessels from constricting by reducing how much angiotensin II your body makes. Angiotensin II is a chemical that constricts blood vessels (makes them more narrow). The problem with taking drugs is that each new substance ingested affects not only the system you intend to improve, but also the entire body. Side effects of anti-hypertensive drugs may include fatigue, dizziness, lower potassium levels, depression, and may even decrease the function of the heart! Another Option: Chiropractic It may sound odd, but one recent scientific study

suggests you may want to try chiropractic as an alternative treatment option for high blood pressure. Chiropractic is a healing profession that uses natural methods to improve a person’s health. The chiropractor’s main tool is the spinal adjustment, and the intention of the adjustment is to remove tension or irritation from the nervous system by promoting the proper alignment and movement of the spine. The chiropractic principle is that if misalignment in the spine causes irritation of the nerves, disruption of brain-body communication will occur, and this can create ill health. Researchers conducted an eight-week study of 50 patients with high blood pressure, using a placebo-controlled, double-blind approach to determine if chiropractic adjustments could be used to lower their blood pressure. The chiropractic adjustments used in the study were delivered to the upper cervical spine only, according to NUCCA protocols. The results were absolutely astounding. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings were statistically lower in the group receiving chiropractic compared to controls. Even medical skeptics could not refute the results – apparently the effects of chiropractic actually do go well beyond joint alignment and movement! With the devastating effect of cardiovascular disease in North America, perhaps the recommended ‘Aspirin a day’ to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes should be changed to ‘an adjustment a day’ to keep us happy and healthy!

As a chiropractic doctor and certified life coach, Dr. Christian Guenette calls himself “your alignment specialist – for body, mind and spir‑ it.” You can check out his approach to health and healing on two different websites: www.back‑ 2health.ca and www.thecommonsensecoach. com. Probiotics are the Friendly Bacteria You Need By Gloria Li

A

s normal inhabitants of your body, probiotics are the “good” or “friendly” bacteria that constitute your intestinal microflora. Although the word “bacteria” is usually associated with germs and illness, friendly bacteria help the body to function properly and maintain good health. Probiotics are nature’s way of optimizing immune function. They promote and maintain good cholesterol metabolism, while also reducing the risk of toxic overload and slowing the decline of bodily functions associated with aging. Why Do We Need Probiotic Supplements? While most people assume they have a healthy intestinal tract, lifestyle and environmental factors can compromise the digestive system. Contributing factors may include: • Poor eating habits • Excess alcohol consumption • Chlorinated drinking water • Stress • The use of antibiotics in food production • A number of other considerations,

12

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

including simply aging, which can greatly reduce the number of friendly bacteria in our systems The Benefits of Probiotic Supplements The lower intestine should contain at least 85 percent friendly bacteria. To ensure this is the case, the healthy microflora in the body should be supported by a probiotic supplement that implants the live, friendly bacteria in the cell walls to help suppress the unfriendly, potentially harmful micro-organisms that enter the body every day. Udo’s Choice® Probiotics from Flora™ are available in seven unique blends, formulated to be age- and condition-specific for toddlers and children, adults and seniors, and individuals with sensitive digestive systems or other health concerns. Adult’s Probiotic delivers 10 billion viable cells per capsule at date of expiry. It is formulated to bolster natural microflora for optimal digestion. With better digestion, the body is less lethargic, giving you more energy. Advanced Adult’s Probiotic, for people over 55, delivers 20 billion viable cells per cap-

sule at the time of expiry. It includes a higher percentage of Bifido bacteria per serving than the Adult Probiotic formula to meet the specific digestive needs of seniors. Children’s Probiotic, for ages 4 to 15, delivers three billion viable cells per capsule at date of expiry. It is designed to meet the digestive needs of children. Toddler’s Probiotic, for children 3 and under, provides 1.7 billion viable cells at date of expiry. This easy-to-use powder can be added to a young child’s juice or yogurt. Super 8 Hi-Potency Probiotic delivers 25 billion viable cells per capsule at date of expiry. It is formulated with a high concentration of L. acidophilus. Hi-Potency Bowel Probiotic, designed for maximum support for people over 18 years old, provides 61 billion viable cells at the time of expiry. It is formulated to help maintain optimum yeast balance in the body. Super 5 Probiotic Lozenges are probiotic breath fresheners that support proper digestion and good health. By using the right probiotic supplement daily, you can take a proactive approach to maintaining gastrointestinal well-being, a core foundation of overall good health.

Supporting Healthy Heart Rhythm Might Just Save Your Life! By Jolie M Root

A

n important but often overlooked issue affecting heart health is cardiac arrhythmia. Though there has been a decline in mortality from coronary heart disease in recent years, sudden cardiac deaths associated with fatal arrhythmia remains the cause of most deaths in industrialized societies.

What Exactly Is an Arrhythmia?

Arrhythmias are irregularities in the pace of the beating of the heart. They can occur in a healthy heart and be of little consequence; however, they may also be an indication of a serious problem with the heart and can lead to stroke, heart attack and, in the worst case, sudden cardiac death. Signs of an arrhythmia might include feeling faint or losing consciousness, feeling lightheaded, having a sense that your heart is racing or fluttering, or experiencing chest pain. Our hearts have an internal electrical system that governs the rhythm of our heartbeat. Problems with this system can lead to irregular heartbeats and the rhythm might be too slow, too fast or very erratic. During an arrhythmia, the heart may even stop beating. We call this sudden cardiac arrest or, if the person does not survive, sudden cardiac death.

Nutrients for Heart Health

A number of nutrients support normal heart rhythm; some of them may already be part of your daily regimen. These supplements may increase the strength of the heart muscle, improve oxygenation of the heart, and protect against oxidative stress. Combining these “heart smart” nutrients into your supplement program will provide natural support for a strong and steady heart rhythm. Start with magnesium. As nature’s calcium channel blocker, magnesium helps to control the excitability of nerves and enables the relaxation of the heart between beats. A deficiency of magnesium might result in altered heart rate and several studies have shown that intravenous magnesium helps to protect against surgery-related atrial fibrillation, a form of

14

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

arrhythmia. Then add CoEnzyme Q-10. CoEnzyme Q-10 plays a role in stabilizing the heart muscle cell membrane; one benefit of this is to support regular heart rhythm. Patients who undergo coronary bypass surgery have increased oxidative stress during and after surgery. The antioxidant CoEnzyme Q-10 protects against post-surgical heart rhythm abnormalities, improving clinical outcomes and leading to shorter hospital stays. Finally, be sure you are taking a marine omega-3 supplement that provides at least 250-400 mg each of EPA and DHA per capsule daily. A substantial body of evidence suggests that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) provide cardiovascular protection and support normal heart rhythm. The four observational studies that have specifically examined the association between dietary intake of long-chain n-3 fatty acids and sudden cardiac death (SCD) have all reported protective associations. In all of these studies, consuming fish one to two times per week was associated with 42 to 50 percent reductions in SCD risk. In two of these studies, the benefits were even more striking when omega-3 fatty acids were measured directly in the blood. The highest quartile of omega-3 blood level was found to have 81 to 90 percent reductions in SCD risk compared with those in the lowest quartile. A 90 percent reduced risk of sudden cardiac death is a worthy goal indeed.

The Obesity-Toxicity

Connection

By Stefan Kuprowsky, MA, ND

T

here is a world-wide obesity epidemic occurring right now. In Canada, the latest statistics indicate that 10 million Canadians are overweight and half a million are morbidly obese. The statistics for childhood obesity are grim. More and more children are having trouble managing their weight. There are literally hundreds of diets and weight-loss programs that people try all the time, but the weight keeps coming back. Have you ever wondered why this is? Is it really a lack of will power, too many calories and not enough exercise? I don’t think it is. As a naturopathic physician who has treated tens of thousands of patients over the years, I have started to look deeper into the problem of weight. I have seen many patients who do all the right things – eat right, exercise, manage their stress – and still have problems keeping the pounds off. Do I think that there is an easy answer to the obesity epidemic? No, I think it is a complex problem involving many variables. However, there is something about modern life that appears to be triggering a world-wide obesity epidemic. After treating thousands of people with weight problems, I have tried to understand what the underlying problem might be. For many years I guided people to avoid sugar, eat whole foods, avoid their food intolerances and exercise more, and I helped people become healthier and in the process to lose inches and pounds. However, in a year or two after becoming less strict with their diets, my patients would gain back all the weight they initially lost and perhaps even gain a few more pounds. It seemed inevitable that as people aged, their metabolisms slowed down and they gained weight. After studying the problem further and taking courses in environmental medicine, I have come to understand the weight problem in an entirely new way. New research is demonstrating that everyday chemicals in our food and environment are having very detrimental effects on our metabolisms. Chemical Soup and Your Metabolism The chemicals include pesticides in the food

16

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

supply, hydrocarbons in the air from the burning of fossil fuels, plastics in just about everything, heavy metals from food, industries and silver amalgams in dental fillings and chemicals in just about everything that is manufactured. We are living in a chemical soup that we accept as a normal condition of contemporary life. Thankfully, the most toxic chemicals that kill people quickly have been removed from our food supply and environment. However, there are 80,000 chemicals that are registered for industrial use by the US Environmental Protection Agency. There are medical tests for only 250 of them. The health agencies in both the US and Canada have tested samples of people to try to assess the degree of contaminants in the average citizen. They tested for the presence of 210 chemicals and found 167 of them in the people tested. The average number of chemicals in any one person was 91. Each person tested had an average of: •

53 chemicals that have been linked to cancer • 62 chemicals toxic to the brain and central nervous system • 58 chemicals toxic to the hormonal/ endocrine system • chemicals toxic to the immune system, typically leading to autoimmune diseases and problems fighting infection The obvious conclusion is that we are all toxic to one degree or another. It is no surprise that we are fighting a losing war on cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, super bacterial infections and many other chronic degenerative conditions. What isn’t so obvious is how this has affected body metabolism resulting in weight gain and obesity. There are two main mechanisms by which these chemicals are lowering metabolism and leading to weight gain. These are toxic mitochondria and hormone disruption. Toxic Mitochondria and Hormone Disruption Mitochondria are found in every cell in the body. They are responsible for creating energy from the calories we consume. When the mitochondria become poisoned from chemicals

entering our body, they produce less energy for cell performance. The cells get sluggish and cannot perform their function. The cells themselves become toxic because they don’t have the energy to eliminate normal waste products of metabolism. The overall effect on the body is a lowering of the basal metabolic rate, which is the amount of calories burned each hour just keeping the body living, before exercise. This is why so many patients complain to me, “Doctor, I am eating less than I ever have and I am still gaining weight.” Another effect on people is fatigue – no matter how much sleep or exercise they get or what supplements they take. Toxic mitochondria are now believed to be at the root of many mystery diseases like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and autism. The second effect on weight gain is through hormone disruption. It is now known that many chemicals mimic the actions of hormones like estrogen. Chemicals also have a deleterious effect on the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces thyroxin, which determines how fast each cell burns oxygen. If you have low thyroid function or hypothyroidism, your metabolism will slow down and you will gain weight as well as feel very tired and cold. The double effect of toxic mitochondria and hormone disruption is an overall lowering of the basal metabolic rate resulting in inevitable weight gain, no matter how responsible your diet and exercise regimens. Avoiding Toxicity; Fighting Obesity The solution to this problem is straightforward. Stop putting more chemicals into your body by eating organic foods and living a greener lifestyle with regards to using chemical products in everyday life. The second step is to eliminate the chemicals you already have. You have to heal the toxic mitochondria and recover normal thyroid and hormonal function before you will regain the cellular energy to normalize body metabolism and return to a healthy weight. Most of the pesticides and organic chemical compounds are stored in fat cells in the

body. When a person loses weight through a forced diet, the chemicals released from the fat loss are re-circulated back into other fat cells. They are not automatically eliminated with weight loss. That is why if you lose weight without detoxifying and eliminating the chemicals released from the fat loss, you are bound to gain that weight back again. It becomes a vicious cycle of weight loss and weight gain. You have lost weight temporarily, but you haven’t lost the chemicals slowing down your metabolism and you will gain the weight right back no matter how hard you try to eat right and exercise. In the next issue of Vista Magazine, I will tell you how to avoid introducing more chemicals into your body and how to eliminate the ones that are already there. Once you accomplish this, it will be much easier to achieve your normal, healthy weight for your age, sex and body build. You will also feel and look a lot better and potentially prevent yourself from coming down with some chronic disease. nergy drinks have become all the rage in the past ten years or so, reaching beyond the “raver” market to include fitness buffs, working parents, studying teenagers and anyone who feels the need for a boost in energy, stamina, and mental clarity. But the reality is that the energy drink phenomenon is a feat of marketing more than it is a handy pick-me-up. Most energy drinks that are labelled as such are merely a concoction of unhealthy ingredients, with trace amounts of impressive-sounding herbs and vitamins to make you think you’re drinking a worthwhile beverage. However, there are healthy alternatives to the mass-marketed (and hugely profitable) energy drink industry. First, let’s take a look at the somewhat suspicious ingredients in most energy drinks before discussing the kinds of ingredients you should be sourcing if you want a healthy beverage that’s truly beneficial.

Ingredients in Mass-Marketed Energy Drinks The active ingredients in the vast majority of so-called energy drinks are simple: caffeine and sugar. Sure, these ingredients can give you a temporary boost, but both caffeine and sugar have no real health benefits and can have negative effects on blood sugar, heart rate, irritability, sleeplessness and more. Other components of energy drinks are listed below. Taurine: Taurine is an amino acid that is naturally produced by our bodies to regulate heart rate, muscle contractions and energy levels. It is known as a cardiac stimulator and can also increase the effects of caffeine. Taken in combination with caffeine, taurine may have adverse effects. Guarana: Guarana is the fruit of a climbing vine, the seeds of which have three times more caffeine than coffee beans. More caffeine! Ginseng: Used for centuries in Chinese medicine, ginseng is known to increase energy levels and reduce stress; it is also said to stimulate the nervous system to increase stamina and hormone production. However, taken in combination with caffeine, ginseng may cause headache and diarrhea. Most energy drinks contain only negligible quantities of ginseng. Ginkgo Biloba: An effective anti-depressant, gingko biloba is known to improve concentration and circulation. It may have adverse effects when taken in combination with anti-depressant medications. It, too, is found in very small quantities in most energy drinks. Acai Berry: This South American berry is a potent antioxidant and is a great component to look for in your beverage; however, the small quantities included in most energy drinks render it largely ineffective. Vitamins B and C: A variety of vitamins can sometimes be found in energy drinks, including inositol (a member of vitamin B complex) and vitamin C. While these vitamins are certainly beneficial to good health, they are typically included in too-small amounts in most drinks, and their benefits are nullified by the diuretic effects of all that caffeine. Energy drinks are at best an over-hyped, over-marketed money maker; at worst, they are downright dangerous. The high caffeine and high sugar content may affect some people badly, particularly those with

18

diabetes or nervous disorders. Even more concerning is the trend of mixing energy drinks with alcohol. A possible risk exists when energy drinks (a stimulant) are mixed with alcohol (a depressant); the resulting effects could even cause death. Some countries in Europe have banned energy drinks because of this risk. A Natural Alternative to Sugary “Energy” Drinks There are all-natural drinks available today that contain none of the caffeine or refined sugars of their mass-marketed counterparts. Often, these drink supplements are available in a powder form that you can simply add to your own filtered water. Look for the following highquality ingredients when choosing your drink supplement. • Red Clover: Red clover is an excellent blood purifier that soothes the nerves and stimulates the immune system. • Korean Ginseng: Increases the body’s resistance to stress, anxiety and fatigue, while also strengthening the immune system. Korean Ginseng is considered effective for mental and physical health. • Siberian Ginseng: This different kind of ginseng helps regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels, balances the pituitary and adrenal glands, and also regulates other endocrine glands. • Fo Ti Tieng: This herb strengthens the body, balances the endocrine system, and is also known to have aphrodisiac properties. It is also used as an anti-aging remedy. • Ginkgo Biloba: Mentioned above in reference to energy drinks, this memory-enhancing substance must be contained in more than trace amounts to be effective. • California Poppy: This flower is traditionally used as a sedative and hypnotic for those experiencing over-excitability and sleeplessness. • Licorice Root: This flavourful root stimulates the adrenal cortex to mediate stress response, and stimulates the thyroid gland. • Oregon Grape Root: This root is a blood purifier that provides an abundance of iron and increases insulin production. • Burdock Root: Also a blood purifier, burdock root builds and cleanses the liver while aiding in blood circulation. • Jamaican Sarsaparilla: Used to help improve glandular function, Jamaican sarsaparilla also balances hormones and improves digestion. • Echinacea: The roots of the echinacea plant are a great immune stimulant, with antiviral and antibiotic properties. Taken in the right quantities and without the added caffeine and sugar of standard energy drinks, the ingredients in high-quality natural drink supplements can indeed have energyenhancing effects on your body and mind. These are clearly the better choice when choosing a beverage with benefits!

Are Winter Coughs, Colds and Flu Getting You Down?

Boost your Immunity and Energy By Angus Brody

P

roducing healthy immune cells in high numbers and the communication between these cells requires a lot of energy and healthy nutrients. A strong immune system will fight off common pathogens quickly without symptoms or disruption to our daily life. Once the body is under stress, our ability to make adequate numbers of immune cells decreases and the bugs start to win the war!

Ongoing Immune Deficiencies

Once the immune system and body is weakened, it may not fully recover after a battle, and before you know it, another bug has invaded. Recurring infections continue to drain resources and a vicious cycle sets in. Hay fever and sinus infections due to allergens like pollen and some foods attack our bodies, and we are not strong enough to fight back. All this pressure on our immune systems and organs of elimination like our livers, kidneys and digestive systems leads to ongoing sickness. The following symptoms are a result of your immune system defences going into battle:

Medicine that helps boost your white blood cells and energy. • Fight Colds, Flu and Infection • Boost Energy and Stamina • Support your Liver, Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Health Astragalus 5g

Fever: heating the body kills the bugs.

Inflammation: sends in the immune cells where they’re needed via the blood.

Extra mucus and histamine production: cleans up after the battle.

Reduction in appetite: redirects energy to the battle zone.

Fatigue: all this work takes a lot of energy and resources.

Your Defence: Strong White Blood Cells

In your blood circulate many types of white blood cells. These cells have the job to produce antibodies, attack and kill bugs and clean up the mess! Examples include Lymphocytes, T cells and B cells and Natural Killer cells, with the number and activity of these cells being the keys to a strong defence against cold and flu viruses and bacteria. Nature provides us with many opportunities to improve the functioning of our clever immune defences. Regular exercise, a reduction in daily stress, a good night’s sleep and a healthy, well balanced diet are all very important, but are sometimes difficult to achieve, especially all at once. You may wish to give your immune system a helping hand during the winter months by investigating superfoods for the immune system and supplementation. Specifically, some herbs have been clinically shown to boost white blood cells and improve the immune system. Some examples are echinacea, andrographis, astragalus, olive leaf and shiitake mushroom, which are readily available to help you fight the cold and flu war!

Soles and the Soul of Canadian Shoe God

John Fluevog By Liberty Craig

Vista: Let’s begin with the most obvious question: Why shoes?

JF: They found me. When I was 21, I was working at a shoe store with Peter Fox, who wanted to start his own shoe store and asked me if I would come along. I said, “Sure why not?” Peter had a number of options to get funding, one of which was my dad. My dad said to him, “Peter, I’ll lend you this enormous sum of $13,000 to start this thing, with my son a 50 percent partner.” And that’s how the story went.

Vista: When did you get into designing shoes? JF: It occurred to me around the mid-eighties that retailing is a tough racket, a hard career. It also occurred to me that I actually had a bent for doing this. I’ve always had different shoes, been a trendy guy. I didn’t really understand that I was good at it, but I realized that people wanted there to be a John Fluevog. People wanted me to be more involved in the design process.... so I thought: okay, I can do that. I attempted to live up to what people expected of me.

Vista: When you began importing Doc Martens in the 1980s, you were the first in North America to do so...

JF: I was interested in the subculture of Doctor Martens. Doc Martens helped fuel the economy side of my business: about 80 percent of what I was selling was on a Doctor Marten sole at one time! But I was designing my own shoes on Doctor Marten bottoms and I began to realize that people didn’t even want my shoes, they just wanted Doctor Martens! And so one day I just quit selling them before they really hit mainstream, which was obviously a bold move for a retailer. I figured if I continued selling them my little Fluevog idea wouldn’t work!

Vista: How does your love of cars influence the design of your shoes?

n artist, a hipster, an environmentalist, John Fluevog has been synonymous with cool shoes for decades. Since Madonna flaunted a pair in her 1991 movie Truth or Dare, “Fluevogs,” as they are known, have appeared on the feet of Seattle grunge scene rockers and a long list of celebrities from Paris Hilton and Scarlett Johansson to the White Stripes. With 11 locations across North America’s most fashionable cities, Vancouver-based John Fluevog caters to the more creative side of the fashion elite from Toronto to New York, Boston to San Francisco, making him one of the few Canadian icons to successfully cross the US border. John spoke with Vista Magazine about his life’s work and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

JF: I like cars because I like the way they look; it has nothing to do with the way they drive. I actually walk to work every day and I don’t drive that much, though I have four cars. Oddly enough, cars and shoes have a lot in common. They’re multi-angular, multi-functional, continuously moving shapes. I think cars are easy fashion guards – the lack of fashion lately in cars is a reflection of society and what people think.

Vista: What other influences inspire you? JF: I like shapes, architecture, the energy that people put into their surroundings and things as an expression of themselves and of beauty. It’s unlimited – it could be anything. It’s why I like New York – there’s so much to look at. There’s a lot of energy of people crammed into one space and you can see that human energy.

www.vistamagonline.com

Vista: How would you define your target

sex drive. In fact I could say: my wife made me do it!

JF: I used to have a smaller piece of the market but not anymore. I’ll have seventyyear-olds in my store, and there will be a twenty-year-old sitting across from them. My market’s all over the map. They tend as a rule to be more art inspired. I think you have to be interested in your surroundings. If you’re wearing jeans and a sweatshirt every day, you may not be my customer.

Vista: How do you keep it “real” in light

market?

Vista: Tell us about your environmental manufacturing initiatives...

JF: I’ve always tried as best I can to do things that aren’t damaging to the environment. Honestly, it’s not easy, and I’m not here to claim that it’s my sole focus. But I’m aware of it and I try. My “Angel” soles are environmentally friendly, with no PVCs. The biggest thing for me is that we try to make shoes that last – that’s probably the biggest environmentally sound thing you can do. I also stock extra components to make the footwear repairable. In the past ten years, the proliferation of really cheap, fast fashion is huge, and people just eat it up. They’re buying more stuff for what they think are cheaper prices, but really I think they’re just kind of chewing up our environment.

Vista: We hear you’re a very healthy guy! JF: Well, we only have one body, and it does wear out. I think I’m fortunate enough to have good genes. I ride my bike and I work out here and there, but I’m not a fanatic. I try to watch what I eat, but I eat everything and I have a sugar fetish, which I try to beat down most of the time. If my mother’s any guide to go by – she’s 92 and very healthy – I think the healthiest thing you can do is be thankful. She’s a thankful person, not too stressed out about anything. That could be my motto in life: be more thankful.

of your enormous success?

egotistical point of view, I say it from... some people call it a higher power; I’ll just call it God. We get beat down by what people say; we start believing lies and it stifles us. It’s a lifelong learning of who we are.

JF: What I’m doing is hard, and complicated. If I started believing my own press and thinking “I’ve made it” – well, I haven’t. I also feel like I’ve got a lot more to do. I can’t be sitting around thinking how amazing I am, because that’s not going to work very well! I’ve been given a lot of opportunities and I feel like I have a responsibility to them.

Vista: Are you a religious person?

Vista: It seems as though you’ve made

JF: You could say that, yeah. My quiet times are very important to me. If I just keep going and going, I start to rattle apart. I need time to focus and to be quiet, and to listen. I like to call it prayer. I think being in touch with your soul is a very healthy thing to do.

a concerted effort to keep your shoes “boutique” rather than mass marketed. JF: Mass marketing doesn’t seem like fun to me. I’m not in business because I like business. My business is a vehicle for me to express myself. I enjoy pushing the envelope, putting that little tiny seed of an idea out there that nobody else has ever done, and watching it grow. I have a sense or a feeling when something’s right, even though I don’t always know how to get there. I will push myself to get to that place of almost discomfort. I don’t like being in a really comfortable place – it doesn’t feel quite right to me.

Vista: Would you say your business ex-

perience has helped you learn more about yourself? JF: I’ve spent a lifetime learning about myself; how I’ve been made, who I am. In my middle thirties, I didn’t really understand that I was artistic. I was – but I didn’t understand it. I think I’m finding out how awesomely I’ve been made. And I don’t say that from an

JF: I hope I’m not “religious.” Spiritual. But I’m really quite taken with Christianity; the miracle of it. I can’t get away from my love of it.

Vista: Do you meditate?

Vista: What’s the difference between “Fluevog” the brand and Fluevog the man?

JF: It was a strategic decision to push my name. I remember seeing a terrible ad on TV in the eighties. [In a Jersey accent] “Hi, I’m Marvin, I’m going to come down and clean your carpets like they’ve never been cleaned before!” And I thought: Marvin’s not stupid. Marvin’s not going to personally clean your carpet – but he knows people trust that personal touch. And that made sense to me; that’s why I put my personality into things. I think in all of human endeavour, when we sense a human touch, bad or good, it’s of interest to us. At the end of the day, my brand is a person, my brand is me; it’s not made up. And I suppose that’s what’s appealing.

Vista: Do you take supplements? JF: I am a veritable vitamin/supplement taking machine! I take antioxidants, vitamins E, C and B, omega-3 oil, calcium, selenium, and folic acid. I’m also on bioidentical testosterone and spray DHEA. I have to say I feel the better for it.

Vista: Why did you decide to take DHEA and testosterone?

JF: A doctor friend suggested I go on DHEA as in my older age – I’m 63 – my body’s not producing enough on its own anymore. The bioidentical testosterone was suggested by my wife after she read the Suzanne Somers book on aging. It snapped up my energy and VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

Estrogen Dominance: The Hormone Triangle By Lorna Vanderhaeghe, MS

M

ary works full time while raising three young children and has been suffering with insomnia and night sweats even though she is far from menopause. Joanne, a busy stockbroker, has such heavy periods that she is locked in her house for seven days every month. Melinda, newly married with an exciting job, is losing her hair, gaining weight around the middle, and feeling exhausted. All three women are suffering from estrogen dominance, a common condition in Canadian women. Hormones Out of Balance We are bombarded by environmental estrogens, also called xenoestrogens or estrogen mimickers. These man-made chemicals act exactly like estrogen in the body. Estrogen-mimickers are found in everything from plastics, cosmetics and pesticides to dry cleaning chemicals, dairy products and more. Too much estrogen upsets the body’s delicate balance of hormones. Some of the most common female estrogen-dominant conditions are PMS, endometriosis, abnormal PAP tests, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, cystic breasts, heavy periods, low thyroid, hormonal acne, severe menopausal symptoms, breast cancer, and the list goes on. Too much estrogen can block the uptake of thyroid hormone, promoting low thyroid. Over 23 percent of Canadians take thyroid medication for low thyroid and an estimated 30 percent have undiagnosed low thyroid with symptoms that include hair loss, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, night sweats, recurring miscarriage, heavy periods, high cholesterol and so much more. Women need estrogen, but not the toxic type found in the environment. Women are naturally supplied with estrogen from their ovaries, adrenal glands and fat cells. When the ovaries take a much-needed rest at menopause, or if the ovaries are surgically removed during a hysterectomy, the adrenal glands become the main source of estrogen. The adrenal glands sit atop the kidneys and also help us deal with stress and control water balance in the body. When our adrenal glands become exhausted from too much stress, hormone havoc ensues. Classic symptoms include insomnia, where you fall asleep without issue but wake up several hours later and can’t fall back to sleep, caffeine and salt cravings, lack of energy, difficulty handling stress, and weight gain around the middle. We must love our adrenals in order to have balanced hormones. The liver is the key organ for detoxifying excess hormones, and breaks down and distributes estrogen and other hormones. Your liver decides if your estrogen is going to stay in the healthy form or be converted into cancer-causing estrogens. Our liver becomes sluggish due to a diet of too many bad fats (from lard, margarine and refined oils), sugars and artificial sweeteners, fried foods, and not enough vegetables and good protein. Regular alcohol consumption also negatively affects the liver’s ability to maintain hormone balance. The liver, thyroid and the adrenal glands must operate at peak performance to ensure hormone harmony. The basis of a healthy hormone program is a diet full of cruciferous vegetables and lean protein from wild, free-range sources. There are also key herbs and nutrients that have been shown by research to support the adrenals, liver and thyroid.

Adrenal Support Eight hours of deep, restful sleep will reverse adrenal exhaustion quickly. At bedtime, take a natural sleep aid containing melatonin, chamomile, hops, valerian and passionflower to help you sleep. The following herbs should be taken in combination to nourish the adrenals and help reduce the effects of stress: • Rhodiola increases the body’s resistance to all types of stress, enhances mental and physical performance, and regulates the heart by increasing oxygen utilization. • Suma is called “para todo” which means “for everything.” It is considered a regenerative tonic for the nervous, reproductive and digestive systems and is used to treat hormonal disorders, sexual dysfunction, fatigue and stress. • Siberian ginseng, not a true ginseng, normalizes reactions to physical and mental stress, and increases the body’s ability to withstand adverse conditions such as heat, noise, increases in workload and enhances physical endurance. It regulates blood sugar, protects the liver and supports optimal adrenal function. • Schizandra berry is a general tonic that promotes liver health and counters the effects of stress and fatigue. It is also used for insomnia associated with changing hormones. • Ashwagandha increases energy to improve overall health and longevity. Studies have proven powerful anti-stress effects as well as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and immune-modulating properties. Ashwagandha not only supports the adrenals but has also been found to improve thyroid function. Support a Low Thyroid The adrenal glands and the thyroid are directly linked, so once the adrenals become exhausted, the thyroid goes low. The following nutrients have been found to help support the thyroid. These nutrients can be safely taken along with thyroid medicines. Never stop your thyroid hormone drug without your doctor’s recommendation. • Tyrosine is an amino acid necessary for the manufacture of thyroid hormones. Tyrosine assists a sluggish thyroid and can aid the loss of those unwanted pounds. • Ashwagandha supports the thyroid gland. Studies show that it enhances thyroid function and produces a significant increase in T4 thyroid hormone. • Guggal extract supports complete thyroid health while enhancing the conversion of T4 hormone to the more potent T3 hormone. Guggal extract and ashwagandha should be used together to support thyroid health. • Potassium iodide is essential for the manufacture of thyroid hormones, and was initially added to salt to combat the epidemic of low thyroid in Canadians. Since many people now avoid salt for fear of high blood pressure, low thyroid and goitres are on the rise in Canada. Environmental Estrogen Protection We must avoid products containing environmental estrogens such as cosmetics with parabens, plastics

with BPA, and synthetic hormones in dairy and meat, to name a few. Detoxification of these estrogens using saunas and dry brushing the skin will help to eliminate excess estrogens, as does eating organic broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. Supplementing with the following nutrients can help protect you from the dangerous effects of environmental estrogens and balance hormones. If you have any of the estrogen-dominant conditions mentioned earlier, you need the following food-based nutrients every day. They can be purchased separately or in combo. • Indole-3-carbinol (I-3-C) is powerful plant nutrient from cruciferous vegetables. I-3-C prevents the conversion of good estrogens to cancer-causing estrogens. I-3-C maintains a healthy cervix, protects against HPV cervical lesions and controls abnormal cell growth found in those with uterine fibroids, breast lumps and endometriosis. It is very effective for heavy periods caused by a thickened uterine lining. • D-glucarate is a powerful detoxifier of excess estrogens via the liver. It helps to maintain healthy hormone balance. • Green tea extract contains polyphenols, catechins and flavonoids shown to be protective against estrogen-related cancers and to stop abnormal cell growth. (Note: Although uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and breast lumps may not develop into cancers, they are cells growing out of control). • Curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric. This powerful anti-inflammatory agent works to inhibit all steps of cancer formation: initiation, promotion and progression. Curcumin also supports the liver. • Rosemary extract, a potent antioxidant, protects cells from cancer-causing agents, inhibits the growth of cancer cells and helps to detoxify toxic estrogens. • Sulforaphane, from Broccophane™ broccoli sprout extract, has been shown to stimulate the body’s production of detoxification enzymes that eliminate environmental estrogens. Sulforaphane is a powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer agent. Happy Conclusions Mary found relief from her insomnia and night sweats within a few days of using the adrenal support nutrients and a natural sleep aid. Joanne is relieved that, after only two months of taking indole3-carbinol along with the other estrogen-balancing nutrients, her periods are now four days in length with normal flow. Since Melinda started taking the recommended thyroid nutrients, her hair stopped falling out and the added weight is now coming off effortlessly.

Effective Digestion and Detoxification:

Cornerstones of Optimal Health By Marva Ward, CNP

T

he human body, from the mouth through the full length of the trunk, is dedicated to the mastication, absorption, detoxification and elimination of the food that we ingest. The success of these processes depends on a very complex, interdependent progression of events: the effective production and facilitation of digestive enzymes, the successful utilization and conversion of nutrients in the liver, effective detoxification process of the liver and kidneys, the continuous repopulation of good bacteria in the intestine and bowel and the final process, daily elimination of waste through the bowel. The breakdown of these vital systems results in the onset and proliferation of disease. Low Stomach Acid Affects Digestive Health When considering the digestive system, low hydrochloric acid (HCL) or “stomach acid” production is often the catalyst leading to a cascade of digestive and nutritional complaints and deficiencies. Overt physical reactions or symptoms often include bloating, gas, heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Covert reactions lead to a domino effect of digestive and health issues including delayed gastric emptying, leaky gut (leading to the onset of disease through inflammation, acidity and the onset of most autoimmune diseases), anemia, and B12 conversion and assimilation, to name a few. The reasons for low HCL, low enzyme production and digestive deficiencies can range from genetics and the aging process to pharmaceutical drugs; however, individuals’ erratic and unhealthy dietary practices are recognized as the most frequent causes. Recover with the “4 Rs” The good news is that repair and recovery are within reach. The solution is found in a well-respected protocol often referred to as the “4 Rs.” Remove: Poor food choices are often the main reason for the slow, painful decline of the digestive process. To begin the repair, it is imperative to remove the food choices that have caused the problem in the first place. The removal of antagonistic, allergenic foods such as wheat, eggs, refined sugar, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, caffeine and alcohol may be accomplished by making healthier food choices with fresh, live, whole fruits, vegetables, gluten-free grains, legumes and proteins. Repair: In the long run, digestive issues often lead to “leaky gut”; the leaking of undigested protein particles into the bloodstream due to a defective, permeable intestinal lining. Leaky gut is considered a contributing factor in inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Repairing the intestinal wall is attainable by removing the irritating food choices and repairing the gut with supplements known for their ability to heal wounds, including zinc, vitamin E, glutamine, vitamin C and vitamin A. Restore or Replace: It is necessary to restore the depleted HCL and digestive enzymes after the body has slowed production. This might in-

clude a complete, full spectrum enzyme supplement that includes bile and HCL and/or additional pancreatic, plant and full spectrum enzymes to support the digestion of all food categories. Re-Inoculate: The small intestine carries approximately one trillion bacteria, or two kilograms of bacteria in the gut. In order to maintain beneficial gut flora for effective digestion and immune health, it is essential to re-inoculate the gut with good bacteria on a regular basis. The quickest way to achieve optimal levels is to periodically include a regime of a high-quality, potent probiotic supplements that are designed to repopulate in the gut after supplementation ceases. Ideal formulas may include the following strains: lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum, lactobacillus plantarum, lactobacillus salivarius, lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus paracasei, lactobacillus rhamnosus, bifidobacterium breve and bifidobacterium longum. Detox via Your Liver As the stomach is the first prominent organ involved in the digestive process, the liver is the central organ in detoxification. It is the largest internal organ in the human body and its cells are responsible for performing over 560 functions; from protein metabolism to the production of biochemicals for digestion and of course, detoxification of exogenous and endogenous toxins. Primarily dependant on amino acids for complete detoxification, the liver depends on a long list of other nutrients as well. A comprehensive list includes vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, B3, B6, B12, NAC, glutathione, SAME, sulphur containing compounds (MSM), methyl containing compounds (folate, methionine, choline, TMG), molybdenum, selenium and other antioxidants. Considering the state of the standard North American diet it is understandable that we are often deficient in one or more of these vital nutrients. It becomes apparent that your first line of defense in liver detoxification is to support the liver with nutrients. Comprehensive, nutritionally based protein formulas are available and are designed specifically to provide the full array of amino acids, vitamins and minerals needed for successful liver detoxification. A Word on Fibre The last word on effective digestion and detoxification is fibre. It is an essential dietary component that is involved in numerous actions throughout the entire digestive and elimination process. Adequate daily fibre consumption begins with our food choices; however, supplementation through capsules and powders is also a very effective option. Marva Ward, CNP, is a registered nutritionist.

The Art of Sports Nutrition By Dr. Cory Holly

S

ports nutrition is an art; the art is in how you apply the science. Once you know what to do, and provided you are guided by reason, the art has to do with the application of what you know is clearly the most rational thing to do. Take it from me, based on decades of observation and personal experience. The “doing it” is by far the most difficult part, and the fact that you’re a fitness or health professional, athlete or health enthusiast makes no difference whatsoever. Although the general public might expect otherwise, you and I both know that every living soul has the same exact challenge: to overcome ourselves, to do what is best and to get the hell out of our own way. Just ask Oprah. The Art of Consistency The art of sports nutrition relates to consistency, timing and reliability with respect to what the science has determined. For example, do you take your vitamin supplements without fail? Whether or not you should take certain ones in specific amounts, such as vitamin C, creatine or glutamine, is established through objective science. The consumption of dietary supplements must first and foremost answer the demands of rationality, logic and safety. After that, we’re stuck with ourselves and that’s why most of us fail. When guided exclusively by emotion, humans always get into trouble. The art also relates to what and how we actually eat, including the way we group macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbs) and how we combine whole foods with our supplements. For example, Tracy and I have 2-4 protein shakes every day. Our delicious, mouth-watering shakes are packed with whey protein isolate, hemp protein, fruit, hemp seed oil, glutamine, ribose, creatine, spirulina and vitamin C. In addition to the powder supplements added to each shake blended in filtered water, we also use our shakes to “shake & take,” meaning we take our other supplements in capsule and tablet form at the same time.

This daily ritual makes for a splendid and extremely practical daily procedure. The “art” we create is equal to the benefits we receive. In fact, we ourselves are the canvasses on which we draw. Our lives represent the art we create and this is why we have such high self-esteem. We do it and we love doing it. A Human Work of Art The measure, the quantity, the timing, the application, the consistency, the day-in and day-out administration of the food we eat and the supplements we take: that is the art of sports nutrition. The art relates to the consistency of the application, but here’s the caveat: what you do cannot contradict the science. Objectivism and rational thinking has no tolerance for that. You take your vitamins at a certain time, for example. The fact that you do this is how the art is revealed. The reason why you do it is based on the purity of objective science. The art of sports nutrition relates to the skill of eating, how you prepare your meals, how you segregate, combine and partition your protein, fats and carbohydrates, when you take your vitamins and when you take your shakes. The quality of your “artwork” is revealed when you consume treasure and push the junk aside. Why would you possibly choose the lowest quality materials when attempting to create your best work of art? The art of sports nutrition can be compared to the skill, development and training of an elite athlete with a health-centered consciousness. You have to show up. You have to practice. Practice makes permanent and practice is where the rubber hits the road. Does it matter to your coach how or if you practice? Of course it does. Each practice is a step closer to creating athletic excellence. It’s an opportunity to refine your skills, improve your technique, identify flaws in your system and more important, identify flaws in your attitude and emotional make-up. It is the latter that most often hinders personal progress. The art of sports nutrition may be compared to a great painter pos-

The Art of Sports Nutrition Cont’d sessed by the vision of what only he can see in the workshop of his own mind. Through both learned and natural skill, he transfers that vision onto a canvas for all to see. This is also true regarding the art of sports nutrition. We can transfer the intellectual property that we alone possess from within our own mind and make it as real as the floor beneath our feet. Like a portrait created by a great artist, would our friends see the same magnificence in the art we produce every day? Would you hide the picture like Dorian Gray, or proudly display it for all to see? Is what you do an outstanding example of the art of sports nutrition in motion? Would people crowd around and gaze at your work with awe and admiration? Ultimately our objective is to maximize our personal health, improve our performance and preserve our independence. If you are true to the art, I guarantee people will talk. They’ll solicit your advice, pay you for it and still wonder how you do it. Is this not, pray tell, what millions do when they gaze at Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or marvel at Michelangelo’s Statue of David? Did these artists create such timeless works of art for praise alone? No way. They did what they were motivated to do because of who they were. They were driven by the virtue of their own beauty and selfish passion. Like Wyatt Earp and the Prodigal Son, once they discovered what they had lost, once they came back “to their senses,” they simply revealed to the world what they always had the potential and desire to do. Over time, they moved their abilities forward to the next and ultimate level of self-mastery through the time-honored tradition of apprenticeship. They applied the principle of consistency and continuous practice and from that moment on, they understood the how and the why, and so must we. The Odd Couple:

Your Thyroid and Your Sex Life By Dee Nicholson

M

ost of us don’t think too much about our thyroid, and pay little attention to its health in the belief that as long as we use iodized salt, it’ll be just fine. Big mistake: when ignored, this “Master and Commander” gland can quickly turn into Captain Bligh, and cause a lot of unpleasant effects. If lately you’ve been feeling weak, fatigued, are experiencing cold hands and feet, dry skin, and a sensation of being chilly, chances are your thyroid is screaming for attention. But check out what else can be affected! Captain Thyroid produces a batch of hor-

mones, mainly thyroxine, which is essential to sexuality in women, so an off-kilter thyroid can have serious negative effects on your love life! But that’s the least of your worries: calcitonin, another of the thyroid hormones, inhibits calcium loss from our bones and maintains calcium balance, keeping our bones strong. A problem with calcitonin can cause real trouble, especially as we age. And then there’s the influence of the thyroid over circulation, respiration, tissue growth, and repair! Not your average gland, indeed: it appears to do everything but the dishes.

The thyroid packs even more punch when it comes to your basal metabolic rate, or “BMR.”It controls the overall metabolic rate and calories required to lose, gain, or maintain body weight. Stress, illnesses with fever, and even the weather can cause an increase in BMR, while fasting, starvation or malnutrition will lower it. If you have “hyperthyroidism,” your thyroid is over-producing thyroxine hormone. This can cause extreme nervousness and irritability, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and weight loss. With “hypothyroidism,” there is too little thyroxine, which brings dry skin,

Serious stuff, this thyroid function! A simple test for thyroid balance is to stick a thermometer under your armpit when you first wake up, before you get out of bed. Lay still with thermometer in place for ten minutes. If your temperature is lower than 36.6 C (97.8 F) your thyroid might be hypoactive; if higher than 36.7 C (98.1F), it could be hyperactive. Symptoms of the flu are similar to those of the common cold: headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches. Generally, the severity of symptoms experienced during the common cold is mild to moderate, whereas the severity of symptoms experienced during the flu is much more intense. The key difference between the common cold and the influenza virus is the sudden onset of fever. Whether you experience the common cold or the flu, you can end up with sinus pain and pressure. The sinuses are cavities in the skull bones that are lined with mucus membranes. In a case of sinusitis, these cavities can become inflamed due to infection and the results are pain, nasal obstruction, discharge, and often fever. Deep colds often result in sinusitis and the flu virus itself can cause symptoms associated with sinusitis. Not to worry – whether caused by the common cold or the flu, there are homeopathic remedies that can offer you relief from sinusitis. Hydrastis Canadensis helps to relieve thick, tenacious nasal secretions and post-nasal drip. There is a lot of watery, excoriating discharge, which causes the person to constantly blow their nose. Calcarea Carbonica is useful for nasal obstruction with yellow discharge. The nostrils are sore and ulcerated. The sinuses are affected by every change of weather and the symptoms are worse in cold, moist air. Kali Bichromicum relieves profuse watery nasal discharge, which is worse in the morning. There may be chronic inflammation of the frontal sinuses with a ‘stopped-up’ sensation. Typical symptoms are pressure and pain at the root of the nose, and violent sneezing. Pulsatilla is useful when only the right nostril is obstructed. There is much yellow mucus in the morning and the nose is stuffed up in the evening. The sense of smell may be lost and the symptoms are worse from heat and better in the fresh, cool air. How to Take Homeopathic Remedies • Dissolve the remedy under your tongue at least 30 minutes before or after eating or drinking. • Choose a low potency, such as a 6C, 12C, or 30C. The higher the potency, the more specific you have to be about matching your symptoms. • As a good rule of thumb, take one dose of the remedy every hour up to three doses or until you feel a 50 percent improvement in symptoms. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek the advice of your homeopath. • Lastly, remember to get proper rest, stay well hydrated, and nourish your body with healthful foods.

ove it or hate it, February 14th is entrenched in our hearts and minds as that all-important day, Valentine’s Day. But while Valentine’s Day has a very long history dating back hundreds of years, the scale of the occasion we have today is largely thanks (or no thanks) to marketers. The day has become an event of mass consumerism, with consumption rates that would shock any thinking person. For example, the following statistics are from the American Greetings Corporation: •

Around a billion valentines are sent each year globally, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. Rediscovering the

Sacred Balance

By David Suzuki with Faisal Moola

We’ve come through the first decade of the 21st century, and it seemed appropriate to revisit a chapter marking the new millennium in my book, The Sacred Balance (Greystone Books/DSF, 1997). The following is from the final chapter.

H

umanity is an infant species, newly evolved from life’s web. And what a magnificent species we are; we can look out and feel spiritually uplifted by the beauty of a forested valley or an ice-coated Arctic mountain, we are overwhelmed with awe at the sight of the star-filled heavens, and we are filled with reverence when we enter a sacred place. In the beauty, mystery and wonder that our brain perceives and expresses, we add a special gift to the planet.

36

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 75

But our brash exuberance over our incredible inventiveness and productivity in this century has made us forget where we belong. If we are to balance and direct our remarkable technological muscle power, we need to regain some ancient virtues: the humility to acknowledge how much we have yet to learn, the respect that will allow us to protect and restore nature, and the love that can lift our eyes to distant horizons, far beyond the next election, paycheque or stock dividend. Above all we need to reclaim our faith in ourselves as creatures of the Earth, living in harmony with all other forms of life. What a sign of maturity it would be for our species to acknowledge the profound limitations inherent in human knowledge and the destructive consequences of our crude but powerful technologies. It would mark the beginning of wisdom to pay attention to ecosystems delineated by nature – mountain ranges, watersheds, valley bottoms, river and lake systems, wetlands – rather than regions determined by politics or economics. The ebb and flow of organisms – fish, birds, mammals, forests – across the Earth’s expanses reflect built-in territorial rhythms that are worthy of respect. The elements that have sparked life onto this planet and continue to fuel it – air, water, soil, energy, biodiversity – are sacrosanct and should be treated as such. There is no ignominy in admitting ignorance or in confessing our inability to manage wild things, to control the forces of nature or even to grasp the cosmic forces that shape our lives. Recognizing and accepting these limitations with humility is the birth of wisdom and the beginning of hope that we will finally rediscover our place in the natural order. When we acknowledge our dependence on the same biophysical factors that support all other life-forms, believing that we have the responsibility for “managing” all of it becomes a terrible burden. But if we look at the world through the lenses of all of life together, we may recognize the origins of our destructive path and realize that we are not the “managers”; there is wisdom

enough for self-management in the web of living creatures that has survived for more than 3.6 billion years. Instead of trying and failing to manage the life-support systems of the planet, we – each one of us – can manage the effect we have on those systems. Knowing how to act is the first big problem. Many people who are eager to work towards personal and public change feel increasingly baffled by the often contradictory messages from experts, as well as the mantras repeated over and over by the media. We no longer trust our innate common sense or the wisdom of our elders. At this critical juncture in our history on Earth, we are asking the wrong questions. Instead of “How do we reduce the deficit?” or “How do we carve out a niche in the global economy?” we should be asking “What is an economy for?” and “How much is enough?” What are the things in life that provide joy and happiness, peace of mind and satisfaction? Does the plethora of goods that our high-production economy delivers so effectively provide the route to happiness and satisfaction, or do the relationships between human and nonhuman beings still form the core of the important things in life? Is the uniformity of food and other products that we now encounter everywhere on the globe an adequate substitute for the different and unexpected? We seem to have forgotten the real things that matter and must establish the real bottom line of non-negotiable needs in order to regain a balance with our surroundings. David Suzuki is the Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation, and is an award-winning scientist and broadcaster. Dr. Suzuki has received a UNESCO prize for science, a United Nations Environment Program medal and the Order of Canada. Faisal Moola is the Director of Science at the David Suzuki Foundation. He has completed several degrees in forest ecology and conservation biology, most recently a PhD from Dalhousie University.

Educating Today... For a Better Tomorrow

Be a Part of the Solution:

How Teenagers Can Help Protect the Environment By Shelly Lynn Nellis

A

s a teenager, you may sometimes feel that it’s not your job to look after the planet. After all, isn’t that what governments and politicians are for? It’s easy to adopt this attitude. But when thinking of the environment, don’t imagine it to be a vast expanse of space way out there somewhere. Think of it as the space that’s immediately around you and beyond your front door: your home, the sidewalks you use, the beaches you play sports on, and the parks you spend time in. If you think about it in these terms, and about what you do when you’re in these places, then it’s easier to see how you can play your part in helping to protect the environment – and why it’s important to do so. At Home The environment isn’t just the space outside your home, which means that when it comes to protecting the planet, the best place to start is inside your home. Start with thinking about what resources you use during the day. For example, how much water do you use? Water is an extremely valuable resource and one we need in order to survive. Yet we don’t have an infinite supply of water, which is why it’s important that we conserve what we do have (only three percent of all water is fresh water and only one percent of that is available for drinking). Think about how you use water and whether there are ways in which you can use less. Do you keep the faucet running when you’re brushing your teeth? Do you turn the shower on several minutes before standing under it? There are many ways in which we can all reduce our consumption of water if we only take a few minutes to think about how we use it. As well as reducing the amount of water we consume, we can also reduce the amount of energy we use around the home. Most of the energy we use at home is generated by burning fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere causing the greenhouse effect, some of the consequences of which are predicted to be rising sea levels and an increased frequency of extreme weather incidents such as floods and droughts. One of the ways in which you can reduce your household’s energy consumption is by turning off appliances when they’re not in use as opposed to leaving them on standby. Some appliances when left on standby use 90 percent of their normal operating power, contributing significantly to increased carbon emissions. At the Beach The beach is a great place to spend time, so it’s important that we protect our beaches and ensure that we’re able to continue using them now and in the future. One of the simplest ways we can protect our beaches is to avoid littering them. If you spend time at the beach, think about the items you take there and whether these could cause any potential problems, not only for others at the beach but for the marine life. For example, the connected plastic rings on a six-pack of pop could cause problems for marine life if eaten or ingested (this packaging also takes hundreds of years to biodegrade). Plastic sandwich bags and bottles from a packed lunch can cause similar problems. It’s always important to think about what you

take and use at the beach and be sure to dispose of it properly, wherever possible by recycling it. The beach and the ocean can also become polluted as a result of water moving over or through polluted ground, such as lawns treated with pesticides. If you’re involved in helping with garden maintenance at home, remind your parents about the importance of using potentially harmful lawn and garden products sparingly, if at all. These are just a few ways in which you can help protect the environment and reduce your impact on it. Remember that the planet belongs to everyone, not just governments and politicians. That means we all have a role in protecting it and making it one we want to live on – now and in the future.

The Glucosamine

Diabetes Risk By Professor Franco Cavaleri, BSc, NB

G

lucosamine has become so widely used to prevent joint disease that annual sales of the supplement have reached close to a billion dollars as per reports in 2009. For some time, though, controversial evidence has indicated that this supplement might be an aggravator of the diabetic condition. Recent studies are shedding more light on this possibility. Investigative trials at Biologic Health Research Corp have shown that glucosamine does, in fact, impose an adverse action on insulin. This better understanding of how glucosamine may interact shows that the vulnerability may be only in those who have already developed mild to advanced insulin resistance or have been diagnosed with diabetes. What Is Insulin Resistance? Insulin resistance is a pre-diabetic state. Dia-

betes is an advanced state of insulin resistance. When we eat a meal, our pancreas manufactures and secretes insulin. Insulin triggers receptors on the insulin responsive cells causing them to open the cell surface gateways to allow blood sugar and other nutrients in for energy production and tissue and biochemical construction. When these receptors lose sensitivity to insulin and cannot respond to the hormone’s signal, a degree of insulin resistance has developed. The type 2 diabetic state is characterized by a loss of as much as 65 percent of this insulin sensitivity. Pre-diabetic states, however, still present a health challenge that is rarely recognized but experienced as a nonspecific sluggish metabolism, poor energy, memory insufficiency, blood sugar mismanagement, poor body fat control, loss of lean muscle and even lower mental and physical performance potential. As we age, insulin resistance tends to ad-

vance. The development of this metabolic sluggishness is also compounded by lifestyle choices such as a processed and refined high glycemic index diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Common environmental toxins like pesticides that might be concentrated in food can also contribute to insulin impediment. Conflicting Opinions on Glucosamine In individuals where lifestyle, genetic predisposition and age are all contributing to insulin desensitization and diabetes, the addition of high glucosamine levels to the diet to treat osteoarthritis may be too much for a system trying to cope. Healthier insulin activity in the younger individual with a healthier lifestyle might not be negatively affected by the added glucosamine strain. These variances among us all contribute to the conflicting results reported by researchers. However, one thing remains constant. Individuals who require glucosamine supplementation to treat osteoarthritis are usually well into adulthood and close to or well into their senior years. As a result, insulin resistance is likely in an advanced state, especially if lifestyle factors (less than healthy) have compounded the natural age-related decline. In these individuals, ongoing high doses of glucosamine supplementation could very well be an aggravator to an already strained situation. What’s the Solution? Glucosamine supplements present formidable health benefits to those who need them as a reactive treatment for advanced arthritic conditions. They’re also fantastic preventive supplements that can be used daily to prevent the onset of premature joint disease for those of us who are physically active or are vulnerable to joint illness due to genetic or other predispositions. The solution is in using a properly formulated glucosamine supplement that provides powerful synergy built into the formula so that smaller amounts of glucosamine can deliver the result. The latest joint health technology to hit the billion dollar category is a natural eggshell membrane glucosamine that is showing in the laboratory and in real life to provide incredible results with standard-setting small doses. The potency is ultimately based on the remarkable synergy of the natural compounds found in the silky, rubbery membrane that lines the inner face of the eggshell. The glucosamine from

The Glucosamine Diabetes Risk cont'd... whole eggshell membrane is not isolated or reacted, but rather allowed to exist in its natural matrix containing NAG, glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, sulphur, and chondroitin as well as collagen and other proteins essential for healthy connective tissue. Research indicates that the eggshell membrane connective tissue building blocks might be more efficiently absorbed. Clinical research using doses of one 500 mg pill per day of this very eggshell membrane powder demonstrates therapeutic results in just ten days for most in the test group and in as long as 30 days for more difficult cases. Eggshell membrane supplies a matrix of important connective tissue building blocks that supports skin, bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and more. In addition, eggshell membrane delivers potent therapeutic anti-inflammatory activity. And it does so without the same risks associated with long-term high doses of typical purified and reacted glucosamine sources. Eggshell membrane seems to be the better preventive choice for active individuals and definitely the safest therapeutic choice for ailing arthritics. My Sweetheart’s Favourite

Chocolate Cak e By Tracy Holly

T

his is my sweetheart’s favourite! It’s simply a delicious and healthier version of a decadent chocolate cake. It’s very easy to make in a pinch and although it doesn’t require the cream cheese icing to get Cupid involved, when you top this cake with icing, your heart will dance and love will spread throughout the room. Cacao (chocolate) has been used as a currency, medicine, food and ritual beverage since recorded history. The earliest evidence of its use dates back to an ancient site in Puerto Escondido, Honduras (1400 BC). It is the seeds of the cacao tree that are used to make cocoa powder and chocolate. Chocolate and cocoa derive many of their health benefits from isolated plant pigments called flavonoids. Once absorbed into the blood, flavonoids function as antioxidants to help counteract cellular damage caused by free radicals. Uncontrolled free radical pathology is associated with the progressive development of cancer and heart disease. Cocoa powder has been shown to lower blood pressure, inhibit the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol and improve blood flow in humans. One cup of unsweetened cocoa drink has almost three times the antioxidant value of an equal amount of green tea, another popular drink renowned for its health benefits. With the proven antioxidant function of cocoa, it would seem obvious to add dark chocolate and cocoa to your diet; however, it’s the active inherent flavonoids of cocoa that provide the protective health benefits, not the added refined sugars and trans-fats. Be careful of the chocolate choices you make! Cocoa does not counteract the damage caused by eating sugar or chemically altered, modified or hydrogenated fats.

My Sweetheart’s Favourite Chocolate Cake Dry Ingredients: 3 cups whole wheat or spelt flour 3 cups rolled oats 4 scoops chocolate protein powder (whey or hemp/pea/rice blend) 6 heaping tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch/dark) 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans 1 cup currants or raisins

Wet Ingredients: Add to blender… 2 cups crushed pineapple with juice (fresh or tin)

1 small grated apple (any type) 2 cups unpasteurized honey 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract ½ cup unsalted butter (or coconut oil) 4 whole eggs Method 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) 2. Grease or use parchment paper on one 9-inch by 12-inch cake pan. 3. Mix all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. 4. Add all liquid ingredients to a blender, blend until well mixed. 5. Add blended ingredients to dry mixture; mix together until smooth and slightly runny. If batter is too runny add more flour. 6. Transfer to bake pan and bake at 350 degrees until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, approximately 35 minutes. 7. Let cool, then top with a thick layer of Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing. Note: The icing is optional; the cake tastes delicious on its own.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing 2 packages of cream cheese ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup unpasteurized honey

Add all ingredients into a small mixing bowl and whip with electric blender until smooth. For more chocolate flavor add ¼ cup more cocoa. Serving suggestion: To make a double layer cake pour mixture into two 9-inch round pans and double the icing recipe. Pomegranate juice contains tannins, which lowers blood pressure and stimulates the immune system and anthocyanins, which reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels. The heart health benefits don’t end there as these nutrients may also prevent thickening of the arteries, reduce LDL cholesterol levels, increase blood flow to heart tissue and prevent plaque build up that leads to atherosclerosis.*

Fertilizer for Your Heart:

Krill Oil By Angus Brody

O

nce used primarily as bait and in fertilizer, krill oil has been garnering a great deal attention in the medical community in recent years. Like fish oil, krill oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids and can be used to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol while simultaneously raising levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. But unlike fish oil, the omega-3 fatty acids found in krill oil are in the same double chain phospholipid structure as in our own cell walls, making krill oil much more readily absorbed – and thus more effective – than fish oil. Extracted from tiny shrimp-like crustaceans harvested primarily from the Pacific Ocean, krill oil works to fight arterial plaque allowing the circulatory system to function properly and reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and certain cancers. When plaque builds up in the arteries and the walls of the heart, inflammation occurs. When this inflammation reaches a critical level, it forces the wall of the heart to open, leading your body to form a blood clot to fill the hole. It is this blood clot that may cause a heart attack. The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil not only fight this inflammation, they have also been shown to support healthy blood pressure and promote a regular heart rhythm. Krill oil naturally contains Vitamins A, D and E and, unlike fish, a powerful antioxidant derived from the algae Krill eat, making Krill Oil 40 times more potent than fish oil. Antioxidants are powerful molecules that fight the free radicals that can cause damage and illness in the body. The antioxidant astaxanthin is found in high concentration in krill oil. Astaxanthin is unique in that it works in the nervous system, effectively crossing the brain-blood barrier to effectively fight diseases of the brain, nervous system, and eyes. Krill oil has also been shown effective in fighting memory loss, sleep problems, stiffness of the joints and muscles, and pre-menstrual syndrome. People suffering from arthritis and fibromyalgia have also found relief with krill oil supplementation. A significant amount of research shows lowered cholesterol levels in as little as a week’s time after consuming 300 mg of krill oil daily, with continued decrease in harmful cholesterol after 30 days of consuming krill oil. So put aside your fishy omega-3 supplements in favour of quickly absorbed, fast-acting, and highly potent krill oil!
