LOOK WHO’S TOURQUING Jason Bartsch Welcome to Rex Driver Autumn edition. There will be plenty of Subaru action in this magazine to warm up those early winter chills. Once again it's a pleasure to report how well the club is currently doing. Our current membership numbers are constantly increasing. Our attendee numbers to social events are strong and I've never seen so many members competing in motorsport. It's a great time to be a part of this club. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our committee members. I want the members to know just how much effort the committee goes to in order to keep the club running and improving. All volunteers, all dedicated and all have the clubs best interests at heart. Without their efforts our club wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as it currently is.

There is always a constant flow of new ideas to make the club more enjoyable for our members. Due to these efforts we are able to offer new merchandise, family friendly social events, tech nights, club cruises and even putting on our very own club motorsport events. Nominations for club committee roles will be opening soon. If you feel you might be a valuable asset to the club then I encourage you to put your hand up. Keep an eye on the forum for further details. If you want to see first hand what it's all about or have an idea to pitch. All members are welcome at our committee meetings. Having invested a reasonable amount in my car over the last couple of years I have decided that it is high time that I start investing more in myself, and my own skillset. In an effort to improve my driving, I made a commitment to do more reading and research to better understand the theory of racing and in doing so I have discovered that there is far more to learn than just finding the best racing line! I picture this process like adding tools to my mental tool box while I am off the track, and to this end I have been seeking out new sources of knowledge through books, websites and podcasts. The final goal is to understand the many factors that separate the good drivers from the great; and understanding what makes great drivers exceptional.

Editorial

My first example is my article for Round 1 of the Club Championship at Collingrove. Here I try to explain how effective some very basic note taking and data analysis helped me to achieve a new PB! We also have an exciting addition to the magazine in the form of Interstate Updates where we can all see what the other Subaru Clubs around the country have been up to. I am hoping this will be a regular feature that will help bring all the States together!

Of course we have heaps of other great local news and articles including two new member profiles and I fully appreciate that this will be a long process but I Frank’s wrap up of the RAA Southern Rally where am relishing the challenge and will be excited to WRX’s took the win and 4 of the top 5 places! share what I learn with my fellow club members. Member Profile:

Adam Hobbs I've always been a bit of a petrol head. I spent a lot of time on motorbikes as a child and got a good taste for speed. Eventually I was old enough to get my car license and my parents helped me buy my first car. A 1970 VG Valiant with a 245 6 cylinder in it. Olive green with a cream vinyl roof. Dad thought it was wise to put as much metal around me a possible. In the end that car sat so low that I couldn't drive over a coke can lying on its side, had extractors and a twin system on it and was loud enough that the neighbours complained when I went to work at 7am in the morning and looked resplendent sitting on super shiny Magnum jelly bean mags. Eventually when I got the car exactly as I want it I put in dead straight into a stobie pole about 500m from home. Soon after I moved onto a hand me down from my younger brother in a bright red 1976 Toyota Celica. This too got the treatment. Big loud exhaust and fat tyres and even a respray. Made a great pizza delivery car and could do mad hand brake turns... Eventually this succumbed to a warped head which killed it. Years later my parents bought a 1997 RX Impreza and after driving it a few times I was hooked. I thought it was fantastic, especially compared to the crappy Toyota Camry I was driving at the time. Eventually my parents sold it to my brother and a few years later he sold it to me. Once it was mine I finally felt at home. This car stayed stock performance wise but ended up with a window shaking sound system. I put about 100,000kms on this car and loved every second of it. One day a few years ago I happened to be looking through Carsales when I finally realised that GC8 WRXs could be had for as little as $8000. A few months later I'd found the one for me and was the proud owner of a nice 1999 WRX in good nick. The previous owner had upgraded the intercooler to a massive hyperflow unit, had a full MRT exhaust system fitted along with some DBA rotors, 2002 WRX 17 inch rims and rear Whiteline sway bar. On top of this S&J had worked their EcuTek magic and had coaxed about 157kw out of it. Since then I've replaced the front seats with some 2002 STI seats as the original ones were a touch small for me. I also came across a good deal on some 2nd hand coilovers at the same time as my original struts needed replacing so I've had them fitted.


After enjoying the car for a while with hills boosts I began to drive the car less and less as the police began major defect and speeding crackdowns across the city and through the hills. Around this time I also got a Labrador puppy. He embarked on a weight saving exercise removing parts of all my skirts and front bumper. After this I lost a little love for the car (and maybe the puppy). Late last year at a family function my brother suggested that I really should look at using the car in the way god intended. After thinking about it for a while a plan formulated and at Christmas time, Santa had put a fire extinguisher and a set of CAMS stickers in my stocking. Before I knew it I was signed up for a WRXSA membership and had entered Collingrove and Mt Alma. My first weekend at Collingrove was a blast and a steadily improved my times, helped along greatly by upgrading my 6 year old Pirelli P7s to some nice sticky Hankook RS-3s. Initially I was quite intimidated by Mt Alma having seen a bunch of YouTube videos of cars coming off the road and rolling. But once I actually got there and ran the track I had a ball. I found that my WRXs balance of power and handling was just right so that i barely had any issues with grip even in the wet and could just concentrate on steering my lines and trying to find the guts to brake later and later for the corners and the chicane. Again my times steadily improved over the whole weekend. I'm now very glad I have decided to get out and use my WRX as it was intended to be used. Motorsport at the level WRXSA involves itself in is fantastic fun and very attainable for just about anyone. I'm enjoying competing in the club championship and now looking forward to trying Mallala and more importantly Old Willunga hill later this year and The Bend next year!

Mitchell Brain

Hi I'm Mitchell, I was never really into cars as a kid as no one in the family had any interest in them, except for an uncle that drags funny cars in Tasmania. When I got my P's I was given an old ('82?) Suzuki Swift as an 18th birthday present but this little beast had so many issues it didn't last long and I eventually decided to scrap it after letting it sit out the front of my dads house unable to move for a long time.

Unfortunately though the turbo was just too enticing and after racking up a few speeding fines over the first 8 months, I lost my licence for 3 months. Since getting it back I've been a lot more responsible with my driving habits but I still like to have a little fun in it. I frequently took it out for drives around the hills, even down to Victor Harbor and a few trips up the Riverland. Since I've owned it I've done a few minor mods to it. They include a 3" turbo back exhaust After a while I bought my first car, a 2001 Subaru system, process west top mount, silicone inlet hose, Liberty GX. While it wasn't the most luxurious or pitch stop mount, short shifter, boost gauge, front powerful car I could get it did make me fall in love strut brace and upgraded rear sway bar and end links with Subaru. I couldn't get over how well it handled all to go with a stage 3 Ecutek tune, all done at S&J. I and the ride was just so smooth and it was still fun to powdercoated my strut brace and 2 sets of rims drive. Over a few years I had that liberty and then an myself to give it that personal touch. 02 Impreza RS written off due to other careless drivers, one being a detective in an unmarked police I joined WRXSA in October last year but as yet haven't car! As devastated as I was when the Impreza was been involved with the club due to various personal declared a write off, it was kind of like a blessing in reasons along with a couple surgeries. Round 4 of the S&J club championship will be my first event, I've never been to one before so I don't know what to expect but I'm keen nonetheless. I think due to me recently buying a house and getting my motorbike licence next week and then getting a motorbike, any more upgrades to the rex will be on hold for a while but I will still try and get to some events in the future. I'm looking forward to improving my driving skills, knowledge of Subaru's, taking my car out on the track and meeting like minded people in the process.

The Importance of Data. Club Championship Round 1: Collingrove By Seth Coultas

I have found that a big challenge with events like Collingrove is that if I have not been there recently I spend half the day relearning the course and reminding myself what works and what doesn’t. That doesn’t leave many runs to try and improve! My hope is that with written notes this process can be shortened and I will be back up to speed quicker!

This worked well when I returned to Collingrove for Round 4 of the Club Championship. By Run 4 I had beaten my PB again and on Run 5 I got it down to 34.82 seconds. Looking at the split times it was clear that this was thanks to a very quick run through the esses. With a cleaner first and second section there is still plenty of room to bring this down further; next time!


WRXSA was lucky enough to field two teams in the CAMS Club Challenge held at Collingrove on Saturday the 27th of May. Strong teamwork resulted in a 3rd place result which came with an $800 cheque for the club! The fastest outright time on the day was achieved by Matt Knighton in his GC8 WRX, smashing his PB with a time of 34.2 seconds Thank you CAMS for putting on such a great event!

Club Championship Round 2: Mount Alma Mile By Jason Bartsch

After 9 months of no motorsport I finally got back in the drivers seat at the 2017 Mount Alma Mile. I was nervous, excited and really happy to be back. Driven motorsport, Eastwood engines and S and J had put in a massive effort to get the Goose ready for this event. Sporting a freshly rebuilt engine and a few other new additions. Including a front mount intercooler and surge tank. My only goal for the weekend was to be able to drive home at the end of competition. I did achieve this but only just. On Run 2 Sunday an exhaust header pipe cracked. Forcing me to retire from the event. A quick patch job with a redbull can and some hose clamps allowed me to limp home. Conditions were near perfect on day 1 which allowed me to put down some good times. It had been a very long time since I had driven Goose in competition and i was a little rusty. Day two started off wet. I wasn't sure how the Nankang semi slicks would go. To my surprise they gripped up great in the slippery conditions.

As usual the best part of the weekend was the overnight stay in the pit paddock. Camping with a couple beers and good mates from the club is truly the most memorable moment of the whole event. Jason Bartsch

2017 WRX STI Test Drive By Seth Coultas


If you are looking for an unbiased review of the current STI then sorry, you have come to the wrong place (come on ,you are reading a WRX Club magazine!). My bias for Subaru is obvious from how much time I spend on putting together this magazine to how much I have spent on improving and maintaining my “Classic” STI! That being said; I’ll try not to turn this into too much of a love letter.

As it turns out, this gave me the perfect opportunity to test it in a variety of conditions, ranging from perfect sunshine and driving rain; family runabout to solo hills run.

The first thing I did was fit the child seat in the back for my daughter Eva so she could join me for the trip home. Surprisingly the mounting point was very easily accessible with plenty of room to clip the mount into; I was recently given the opportunity to take a anyone with kids will appreciate this little detail! This is a comfortable car with all the modern features that people have come to expect in a new car and some extras that I didn’t even realise were available! In no time at all Eva was streaming the Moana Soundtrack from YouTube on my phone through the sound system on full blast; she loved it! And unlike when we are in my car she didn’t complain that the ride was too bumpy!

The upper central display can show you the view from the passenger side mirror. No more gutter rash!

After a quick dinner out darkness had fallen and I went for a quick run up Montacute Road and back, visibility was excellent, very important if you like going out after dark! On that topic I found the driver visibility very good with the A pillar being very unobtrusive as was the big rear wing. Saturday was a trip out to the big rocking horse in Gumeracha; which means Gorge Road run! There was plenty of traffic out as it was a beautiful day with hardly a cloud in the sky; before I knew it Eva had fallen asleep in the back; testament to the fact that the car is smooth and quiet when not driven in anger, even on winding roads. Either that or I just drive far too slow! Regardless, it gave me a chance to deviate off Gorge Road, explore and become more familiar with the feel of the car. Even at a steady pace I found that on sweeping corners the auto setting on the DCCD was a little offputting. Being used to my old STI, the electronic adjustments to the torque ratio felt a little weird; switching it to sharper handing “Auto (-)” mode (torque bias to the rear) felt a lot more natural so when you are on a nice road with good traction I would strongly recommend that setting! There is also a manual setting that gives you the option set the front / rear bias, but I didn’t get much of a chance to play with that. Similarly I did not play around with the traction control settings either.

The silver switch on the centre console allows you to adjust the Driver Control Centre Differential (DCCD) while the dial switches between the Intelligent Drive settings. Intelligent (I) mode is for everyday driving and opens the throttle more gradually to increase fuel efficiency. Sport (S) mode allows the throttle to open a bit more quickly, providing more responsive acceleration; Finally the Sport Sharp (S#) mode unlocks the full potential and doesn’t limit throttle response at all.


Heading back down Gorge Road after lunch we had all the windows down, the sunroof wide open; and this time playing the ‘Sing’ soundtrack at high volume; quality family moment! We did get a few clear sections of road and I found that by this stage I had become very accustomed to the steering and throttle response and it was starting to feel like I was beginning to understand the personality of the car.

As I mentioned earlier I had taken the Monday off work, so once the kids were dropped off at daycare I was free to spend the morning taking photos and going for one last drive through the hills before I had to return the car at lunch time. While setting up the

shot to show a side by side comparison of my car and the 2017 model, I was reminded just how raw driving the 2000 STI had become. To be fair it was a lot more comfortable and easy to drive before the new engine went in, the coilovers were installed and it was Tuned to E85; it is now more ‘race car’ than family car that’s for sure! With the old STI now delivering almost 240kW at the wheels the 2017 car did feel a little bit lacking in direct comparison, but only at the top end; up to 4,000-5,000 RPM the new STI felt far more responsive than what I was used to.


Monday was the day for wet weather testing, the rain and drizzle had arrived overnight so once I had finished with photos I set off, up Gorge Road again to the Reservoir, then back down to Corkscrew road. I decided that now would be a good time to experiment with the SI Drive settings; this adjusts throttle response; Sports Sharp was my go to on Sunday when the weather was perfect but was a little unruly coming out of corners on the wet Monday morning. Switching it down to Sport Mode for these conditions made pulling up a wet Corkscrew Road a lot more predictable. I also found that switching the DCCD setting back to “Auto (+)” had a positive impact on the feel through the sharper corners.

All too soon it was time to head back down into the city where I found the cruise controls very helpful and easy to access. I’m not sure about you but coming straight of a good hills run, even a wet one, I struggle with how slow 60km/h feels through town. Before long I was back at Glenelg dropping the car off at Eblens. It was not easy saying goodbye to the car, over just a couple of days I had become very comfortable with it, and had built a relationship that I could see continuing for much longer. Is a new car on the cards? …maybe? But if it was I think my first instinct would be to ask for the same demo car I borrowed, because that is what a Subaru does, and so many other cars don’t do; it builds a relationship with you. This is why I could not bear to part with my classic, and why I think I need a much bigger garage! So long STI 017, until we meet again…? Seth Coultas

By Megan Jane A common interest has the potential to bring people together and that is why socialorientated car clubs such as WRXSA work so well for all ages and backgrounds. It’s comforting to belong somewhere; to feel understood. When you are a part of a car club, there is no judgement or criticism of what type of car you drive and more importantly, you are supported with mechanical issues, modification choices and motorsport accomplishments. This sense of community is what makes club membership such a rewarding choice. Your preference of club is quite often a reflection of not only your enthusiasm for cars but also your chosen car. You can arrive at an event with your car club and it’s a united front, representing strength, passion and community. So what happens when two opposing clubs are brought together? Oh, it’s a beautiful thing! The ongoing rivalry between WRX / STI and Evolution owners is quite often the subject of friendly banter. This seemed like the perfect motivation to get them in the same place at once. Each car offers their own unique traits; the reasons why their owner prefers it over the other and no one will dispute that Subaru and Mitsubishi have both created a fun and capable all-wheel-drive platform. Within their monthly “Saturday Sessions”, Slow Life had been showcasing different themes and March 18th saw the WRX versus Evo display come to life. WRXSA were asked to present fifteen of their members for the display and the Mitsubishi GSR Evo Club (MGEC) were asked to produce the same. Some may assume that there is animosity between the two clubs or that there is general dislike for the “other side” but there truly isn’t. On this particular Saturday night, car enthusiasts came together to display their pride and joy for the benefit of their respective club.


It was a fantastic opportunity for both clubs to promote themselves to the local car scene, raising awareness for CAMS affiliation as well as the social aspects of a car club. Slow Life are known for getting hundreds of people at their monthly meet and this event was no different. The exposure for WRXSA and MGEC allowed them to share their cars with the community as well pitch to potential new members. With a laneway of car parks to fill at Ikea, WRXSA and MGEC rolled in to face their contrasting rival on either side of the row. Organised from earliest model to latest, every one of these cars, whether they are built for motorsport or to enjoy on the streets, have an owner that has made their car distinctive in one way or another. Both clubs had succeeded in sourcing the respective 90’s-born rally icon, through to a modern day Japanese performance car of present day. The SJ1000 STI and the Couriers Please Evo were the icing on the cake to this spectacle, with each car facing the other at either end of the laneway. Both cars looked like cats amongst pigeons, aggressively stanced, just begging to be let off their leash. The cars showcased a serious and professional side to what the STI and Evo are capable of. Interested crowds surrounded the race cars, which are equally impressive builds in their own right. While drivers Dan Day and Daniel “Twitch” Smith were happy to engage with everyone, answering questions and discussing motorsport. A significant amount of people made the effort to get their car out to this event and the sense of community was something to be admired. Members of both clubs merged to chat, with some only meeting each other for the first time. This was also the first opportunity for some members to see the strength in numbers that each club can provide, igniting that fire to belong. Hopefully we will be seeing another WRXSA / MGEC social collaboration soon and I know that many of us are counting down for the CAMS Challenge on 27 May! May the best team win! Fast & Furious 8—Fate of the Furious WRXSA Cinema Night Out By Damien Hirst

Twenty members came out for this premiere night of Fate of the Furious 8. Thanks for all that came out for this top night considering we had Easter Friday and Motorsport events on. This is the 8th instalment of the movie keeping the original actors again but minus Paul Walker unfortunately. We all know the Fast Furious saga gets a little further from the original each time but never-the-less it still gives that pumped feeling in us to go see it. What better way to see this than to go Gold Seats at West Lakes. We gathered early at Reading Cinema for group mingle and social drinks. Gold Seating allows alcohol and finer food which was very tasty. WRXSA had taken over the comfortable lounge area, Fast and Furious style with Coronas doing the rounds. Time moved on too quick and we were showed to our cinema seating after having arranged our ‘In Movie’ food and drinks. There was plenty of room among the comfortable recliners which lets me kick off my shoes and make myself at home. I have to shout out to the staff at the Gold Lounge for their friendly service and great help organising our club on bookings, and at a good price too.


The movie started off in a traditional F&F way with street racing in Cuba with 1950’s Chevrolets. Some interesting coke can tips helped ‘Dom Toretto’ win once again, in an unreal way. The story followed on from F&F7 but added a sophisticated team stealing a nuclear bomb for god knows what and Toretto was threaten to help do the steal to save family.

Interstate Update: NSW Impreza WRX Club With so much WRX action happening all around Australia lets take a look at what NSW has been up to!

Impreza WRX Club Motorkhana - Round 3 Well round 3 of the Impreza WRX Club Motorkhana Championship has bee run and won with another bumper field of 40 entrants.

Driver’s briefing starts pretty much on time and there was a frank assessment of the ability to run the day – if we don’t get more volunteer timekeepers we can’t keep going after lunch. Thankfully some of our drivers I arrive nice and early to find I am not first so there volunteered to share the duty after lunch and will be help available in case it is needed. Mark W Brendan, Michael, Wayne & Janice were able to help volunteers and is set the task of Administration/Sign- out and share the duties and in the end the day ran in. Not hard if everyone remembers to have their without any dramas. CAMS license, their entry form and their Club Membership cards handy. Too many don’t so a few 40 entrants meant a turn-around time of ~ 1 ½ hours technical issues to resolve including signing up for each pair of tests so we split into 3 groups so each members and re-applying for licenses so that group had ½ hour “on” and an hour “off”. Results after 4 Rounds What a competition! We see Jordan Rohrlach leading on 122 points followed by newcomer Adam Hobbs on 100. Despite CC regulars Dan Pearce and Jacob Richards not entering round 4 they remain in top 5 sitting 3rd and 4th respectively. Joining Jacob in equal 4th place is Todd Carruthers. Followed again on equal points are Dave Irish and big mover, and another new comer, Jason Sears. The Associate Class is also shaping up to be a exciting competition. 9 entrants have so far competed in a CC round and we see Gordan Christie aka Flashh Gordan leading the way on 69 points. This leads us into R5 the MCSA supersprint. Jordan Rohrlach is starting to firm up his position, as the one to watch, for Grand Champion. Jordan will be looking to extend his lead with his entry in R5 whilst second place Adam Hobbs has had to withdraw due to double booking himself.

Celebrating over 15 years of Rex Driver! As I write this members are finalising their preparations for SubiNats 2017 over at Philip Island; but 15 years ago seven intrepid WRXSA members made an even longer trip over to Tasmania to spend 4 days touring Tasmania for Targa Rex 2001! They were joined by local WRX enthusiasts on the tour that worked its way clockwise around the island and included some of the Targa Tasmania stages. Day one included winding mountain roads and a stop off at Longford, home to the 7km long Longford road racing circuit that in 1959 and 1965 hosted the Australian Grand Prix. The last event was held there in 1968. Day 2 and members continued down to Hobart and then on to find more mountain roads including the ultimate hillclimb to the top of Mt Wellington.

Day 3 highlights included a stop off at Baskerville Raceway and driving through the central highlands, sampling Targa Stages along the way. The final day completed the tour loop up the West Coast with a quiet wilderness drive that included the famous Hellyer Gorge Targa Stage. Lunch was hosted by the Subaru dealer Penguin where a reporter from the local paper even turned up to take some photos and write an article that was printed the following week!
