It’s all downhill from here... Ready, set, go...the thrills and spills of downhill speed return to the Pohutukawa Coast this summer with the second annual Beachlands-Maraetai Trolley Derby on Sunday 8 February. “We had an overwhelmingly positive response to our inaugural derby last year so it’s back by popular demand,” says race director Baden Russell. “We had more than 2000 people at Omana park on the day. “The community really claimed the event and I think we’ll have even more people there this year.” With 70 confirmed entries, racing is scheduled to get underway at 8am. Competitors will race in pairs in three age group categories - 6-10 year-olds, 11-16 and 17 plus.

Stolen cars crash at Whitford

A police pursuit on the Pohutukawa Coast early on Monday morning ended when two stolen vehicles crashed in Whitford and a third was halted by road spikes in Cockle Bay. The drivers and passengers in the three vehicles - four teenagers and a 12-year-old - were subsequently apprehended. The drama unfolded after Police were alerted by neighbours to vehicle break-ins in Second View Ave and Ealing Crescent in Beachlands between 3.30 and 4am. Police intercepted and

followed a convoy of three stolen vehicles out of Beachlands. “Police sighted the second vehicle in the convoy - a Mazda Capella stationwagon taken from Blockhouse Bay - activated their sirens and the vehicle accelerated away refusing to stop,” says a police spokesperson. “It rounded a corner near Whitford, and is believed to have slipped out on the wet road before crashing into a tree opposite Whitford BP.” “The third stolen vehicle - a Mazda Familia hatchback taken from

Lynfield - was also going too fast and subsequently crashed into the back of the first.” The drivers and a passanger ran from the vehicles but were later located by a Police dog unit hiding in the Whitford Park area. Meanwhile, the first vehicle in the convoy - a Subaru stolen from Pakuranga - tried to ram a Police vehicle in Cockle Bay but was stopped in Sandspit Rd after Police laid road spikes. What about the other 58%?... THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz The holiday period has seen debate over the controversial “zero tolerance” towards speeding instigated by police over that period. Despite this policy, there were 17 road fatalities during that time. Is too much focus going on to speeding? Statistics show that from 2011-13 speeding and/or alcohol and drugs were factors in 42% of all fatal crashes. This begs a question: What caused the other 58% and why aren’t we focusing on that? If the aim is to reduce the number of road fatalities, then these statistics would suggest our focus is too narrow. I got my driver’s licence in 1972. That year there were 713 road fatalities – nearly two and a half times the number there were last year, and at a time when there were a fraction of the vehicles on the roads that there are today. So why the huge total back then? Were we much worse drivers than we are now? I don’t believe so.

We weren’t awful drivers, but we were driving awful cars on awful roads. In 1972 seat belts had only become compulsory that year, many cars didn’t have head rests to reduce neck injuries, disc brakes were rare, no air bags, no power steering, no traction control systems. Most cars were big chunks of metal with little thought given to crash survivability. Handling and suspension was often dreadful. Many roads were not much better. There were far fewer motorways and expressways, fewer passing lanes, fewer sealed roads, fewer traffic lights and roundabouts, no motorway median barriers. In my view, the huge improvements in vehicle design and road safety measures in the intervening years must surely have been major factors in reducing the annual road toll. So perhaps we need more focus on these areas. Obviously police need to continue to enforce speed limits and education about the risks of drink/drug driving needs to continue. But we also need to do the following: 1. Introduce compulsory defensive driving courses for all drivers, conditional on their obtaining a driver’s licence. The driving test doesn’t seemed to have changed

that much since when I took my test in 1972. Having Dad teach his kids to drive still seems to be a parental rite of passage. The time has come to put all driving instruction in the hands of trained professionals, who in turn, need to reach an exacting standard before being able to teach driving. 2. Put more emphasis on vehicle safety by ensuring vehicles (especially trucks) comply with the latest international safety standards. We can argue about the detail of what standards should apply to what makes and years, but as a general principle the Government needs to act faster in legislating vehicle safety. 3. Local councils need to put road safety front and centre in their annual planning. Too often funding for movie studios and white water rafting venues takes precedent over fixing roading Black Spots. The policy seems to be to fix roads only after they have a proven accident record. Roads need to be fixed before people die, not afterwards. The reality is that many motorists will drive too fast. There needs to be a greaterfocus on reducing the consequences of what happens when they do. This is what will result in a big reduction in road fatalities.

Dogs not allowed on Shelly Bay Beach 9am to 7pm What has happened to our most treasured beach – Shelly Bay, Beachlands – the safest beach to take our little ones, shaded by wonderful trees. It is inundated by dogs running free. No longer is it a pleasurable place to take our little ones. If it hadn’t been for the quick action of my daughter our nine month old grandson, while being dried off would have been bowled over. Owners of these dogs are adamant that their dogs are

allowed to run free at all times. I have checked with the Council and they say not during daylight savings between the hours of 9am and 7pm. This b)each during the above time needs to be a safe place for our little ones, and we oldies. We want our beach back...free from dogs. CAROLE PORTER Beachlands

Beachlands soccer to become talent centre Beachlands Maraetai AFC is to become the east Auckland talent centre for the Ricki Herbert Football Academy (RHFA). Headed by former All White soccer coach (and player), Ricki Herbert, the academy provides affordable, high value soccer coaching to all children aged from 4 to 17. As these players progress, the Academy provides a coaching platform for all children keen on their football. It helps identify those it believes can progress to the highest levels and helps plan the best way to make the most of their ability and how to achieve their goals. At 15 years and on, there is a major focus on providing these players with opportunties to showcase their talent and advance their football careers. The coaching programme includes skill, technical drills, team structures and individual player analysis against a background of

dress codes, personal presentation etc The programmes operate in conjunction with school terms 1 to 4. Participants either take a break in the school holidays and/or attend RHFA’s National Academy . The programme will give each player 35 weeks of top class coaching at 2 to 3 sessions per week. All participants, if selected, would qualify for our National Academy. Says Beachlands club president Brian Preston: “This is a real opportunity for BMAFC as it gives us the chance to help provide pathways in football that we have never have before, and also keep hold of our better players and stop parents having to drive all over Auckland three to four times a week for training and games.

School loses sports gear in arson Maraetai Beach School lost all its sports equipment in a Boxing Day arson. The Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out at 3am. Both its fire trucks attended and the school’s sports shed was well alight when they arrived. Firefighters spent the next two hours putting the fire out with 6-7000 litres of water from the nearby school swimming pool. “It was definitely suspicious and definitely arson. The fire started in a rubbish basket outside the sports shed itself,” says Chief Fire Officer Shane Rutherford. “This spread into the eaves of the shed and burnt it down. The school lost all its sports equipment.” Shane says there was a security camera in a good position but it was pointing too far downwards so couldn’t get the arsonist(s) on film. For Mark Keenan, the arson was an unwelcome start to his role as the new principal for the school. “All the gear went in the fire. But both the Ministry’s and our own insurance will cover the structure and the gear,” says Mark. “Hopefully it [the gear] will be all here in time for Day One of the new term.” “We’ve been working really hard behind the scenes during the holiday period to make sure it is here. “We don’t have a timeline as to when a new shed will be built but we’ll have plans in place to make sure the new gear will be accessible to the kids.” The same day at 3.30pm the Beachlands brigade attended a woman at Shelly Bay Beach, Beachlands who had broken her ankle. The First Response team called for brigade assistance to carry the woman to a waiting ambulance in the brigade’s Stokes Basket. The Stokes Basket was also needed on January 11 when the brigade was called to assist First Response with a man who jumped off Maraetai Wharf at low tide and broke his leg.

The burnt out sports equipment shed at Maraetai Beach School. Photo: Jenny Chandler On Monday night last week the brigade was called to help a Beachlands woman who had been sick for several days and was having breathing problems. She was on her way to hospital but collapsed in her hallway. Last Saturday night the brigade was called out when a smoke alarm activated in an unoccupied holiday home in Hawke Cres. The owner, who lives in Northcote, attended so brigade members could gain entry. It proved to be a faulty alarm. Overall it was a quiet holiday period for the Beachlands brigade. However, 2014 was one of its busiest years on record with 90 calls outs, up 10 on the previous year. A growing trend is the increase in medical related call outs with the Beachlands brigade often supporting the Beachlands-Maraetai First ResponseTeam. This is part of a nationwide trend. There is now an average of five call outs a day across Auckland to assist people with cardiac and breathing difficulties. Tuesday morning this week saw two brigade callouts. The first at 5am was to tree branches blocking Maraetai Drive near the Omana bend. The second between 6am and 7am was to a vehicle fire in Karaka Rd. A sedan caught fire after the driver drove into the back of a parked ute. Sun strike was thought to be a factor in the accident.

Huge turnout at Te Puru for rep touch tournament

Some 62 touch teams plus their coaches, managers and supporters made for an impressive turnout of about 3000 people at Te Puru Park last Saturday. The occasion was the annual tri series touch rugby tournament between Auckland, North

Harbour and CountiesManukau age group teams. _ Under 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 in boys, girls and mixed. The event was hosted by the Beachlands Maraetai Touch Football Club with support from Counties Manukau Touch Association.

some teams from Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) who were on the road at 4.30am to be at Te Puru in time for a 9.30am start. Counties triumphed on the day and retained the trophy. The tournament was a success thanks to

It was the first time the event – which is rotated among the three associations – has been held at Te Puru and recognises the huge growth in Beachlands-Maraetai touch which is now one of the biggest modules in the region. Also taking part were

the many Beachlands Maraetai Touch Club volunteers who helped on the day, along with the Pohutukawa Coast Crime Patrol members who acted as parking wardens and managed to squeeze in 800 cars.

Counties rep team members (from left) are Abby Lockhart of the Under 11 girls elite team, who is holding the trophy; Nina Naera, Counties Manukau Touch Junior Tour Director; Mason Lockhart, Under 15 boys elite team; Alison Morrision, Under 11 girls elite team; Francis Morrison, Under 13 mixed elite team, also holding the cup. All play for Beachlands except Mason who plays for Howick College.

Permit needed for open fires A restricted fire season for rural areas in the Auckland region is still in place which allows lighting of outdoor fires on rural land but a permit is required for fires in the open air. A total fire ban is now in place for all Hauraki Gulf Islands. The hot and dry summer means risks of vegetation fires are higher so people need to be vigilant around their properties, clearing easily flammable fuel such as dry leaves and debris. Council will be issuing fire permits in Auckland’s rural zones free of charge but people are advised to plan ahead.
