Realism shines from artist’s fine detail When Beachlands’ Sue Collins was thrown out of art classes by her school teacher in England because of a perceived lack of talent, she never dreamed she would one day be creating stunning artworks on the other side of the world. Next week Sue’s Mellow Yellow - a handsome acrylic ink depiction of larger than life lillies - will be proudly exhibited in the Easter Show annual art competition. And the following week three of her works will feature in the Tony Clarke Fine Arts School exhibition in Pakuranga. “I never in my wildest dreams thought I could create paintings like these,” says Sue, manager at Harcourts Real Estate Beachlands. “I still have to pinch myself that they’re mine.” Sue attributes her artistic success to her art teacher Tony Clarke and his unique tuition and painting style, for creating exceptional artworks. Sue took up a friend’s dare five years ago to try art classes with Tony and was amazed

Hunua MP Andrew Bayly wants to find a local solution to parental worries over children having to stand on school buses between the Pohutukawa Coast and Howick schools. Andrew met with Beachlands and Maraetai parents last Friday to discuss the safety of school children who have to stand in the bus aisle at open road speeds on the daily trip to and from Howick. It’s an issue that has featured in the PC Times on a regular basis for the past 18 years. The problem, says Andrew Bayly, is that there is no statistical

evidence to support a change in legislation that would ensure all children had seats. In fact, accident statistics for school buses across New Zealand show no fatalities or serious injuries. “It’s difficult to force a change in national policy if there is no evidence to support a change,” Andrew told the PC Times. But he does believe that there may be a solution to the school bus issue here on the Coast. The first step, he says, is to collect information. • TO PAGE 11

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (March 27th 2015)

Change of priorities needed to promote local tourism THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz At age 17 I distinctly remember arriving in the small town of Tirau one evening, having ridden my Suzuki 50cc motorbike from Auckland in the pouring rain. I remember standing outside a Tirau Fish & Chip shop, soaked to the skin, and thinking: “What a dump!” How things have changed. Tirau is now one of our favourite places. It’s got the corrugated iron thing going, there are some great gift and antique shops, an old fashioned country pub, the clock shop, a good information centre and some fabulous cafes and coffee places – some of which are quite unusual. The whole town follows the rustic (and rusty) iron theme. It’s now a compulsory stop on the drive south. If they can do it in Tirau, why can’t we do it here? We are on the Pacific Coast Highway, so what a terrific opportunity to transform some of our villages and make them a top destination for overseas tourists in their

camper vans. Clevedon Village is the obvious place to start and we’ve talked before about perhaps giving it a country & western theme: hay bales in the main street, hitching posts for horses, natural timber shop frontages, old fashioned drinking fountains and hand-cranked water pumps, Victorian-style street lamps, cobbled roadway, wagon wheels, maybe a cowboy-themed kids’ playground, perhaps horse drawn carriage rides as in Devonport. Clevedon has a great business association, one of the most pro-active I’ve come across in 30 years of working on community newspapers. It punches well above its weight. But to bring about a Tirau-scale transformation requires not just a buy-in by local businesses but some serious funding. That’s where I think Auckland Council’s tourism agency, ATEED, needs to change its priorities. Big multimillion dollar one-off events such as the V8 car racing are all well and good, but surely the long-term tourism gains will come through investing in permanent fixtures, by creating sought-after tourist attractions, marketing them globally, and providing the infrastructure they need for a bustling tourist trade.

MEANWHILE, we have at least discovered the secret to getting those old, narrow and dangerous rural bridges replaced. I’m thinking particularly of Ryburns Bridge outside Clevedon, and the bridge across the Mangemangeroa Gorge. All we have to do is ask Hunua MP Andrew Bayly to resign and force a by-election. We could then invite Winston Peters to stand and before you know it we’d have all the nice new bridges we want! PERHAPS the Government could fix the rest of our roads at the same time. At the weekend we drove from Papakura to Beachlands, via Clevedon, in a van loaded down with heavy pot plants. Every bump in the road reminded me of how truly, truly awful the road surface is on most of our rural roads. Frankly, they are a disgrace and dangerous as well, especially if you are a cyclist trying to avoid both the traffic and the bumps in the road. It explains why at least half the population our here drive 4 x 4s.

LETTER:

Greetings to Whitford Residents I am sure that the majority of Whitford residents are aware that there is a dedicated Crime Patrol vehicle running in your area, with the aim of helping to reduce crime. This patrol was set up to run alongside, and to be a partner to, the Beachlands and Maraetai patrol, but to work exclusively for the Whitford area. So far, the patrol has been successful in its aims, and is doing a very good job. But we do need more volunteers if we are going to do the very successfuly job that we envisage. What we are looking for are volunteers prepared to put aside two hours a week on a regular basis. They will be accompanied by another volunteer (there will always be two of you in the car) for a tour of the Whitford area, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious, and reporting it by filling in the details on forms supplied to you. Remember, if you have a problem, phone 111. They don’t bite. You can download an application form to join Crime Patrol at http://tinyurl.com/mv6yzqg, or phone our local police station on 536 5839. You can text your phone number to 022 0449 130 and we will get back to you.

Litter levels dropping at beaches By Teri Doran Beachlands School, local businesses, and residents joined forces recently to help rid neighboring beaches and coastlines of litter. School pupils, parents and teachers, Ray White Lighthouse Real Estate, Harcourts Real Estate, and volunteers took part in the annual Pohutukawa Coast beach clean-up. Te Puru Centre’s Nikki Ferigo, event organiser, says litter picked-up this year has been markedly reduced compared to previous clean-ups. “The good news is that there was noticeably less rubbish at most beaches,” says Nikki. “Could be our annual efforts are having a big effect, or maybe we are all getting better at not littering, or picking it [refuse] up as we see it.” However, Nikki says it’s not all good news. A new culprit surfaces as a main threat to local beaches. Doggy-poo wrapped in plastic bags has emerged as the leading cause of pollution to our coastline. An abundance of the unwanted canine excrement packages was found thrown over the cliff at Leigh Auton Reserve. Nikki describes the findings as “considerable”, and “disgusting.” Nikki urges local dog owners to be more thoughtful about their actions. “People aren’t thinking about the consequences. Just because it’s out of site, doesn’t mean it has been disposed of properly. It’s polluting the sea. Our sea and beaches struggle enough.” As well as the health and safety risk posed by the discarded dog waste, Nikki adds that the plastic bags pose a marine hazard. “One of the terrible things about plastics is they don’t biodegrade. Every piece of plastic which has ended up in the sea still exist somewhere in one shape or another.” Nikki says the main concern of the plastic pollution is that it is ingested by marine life, releasing toxins into their system, and back into the food chain. “It’s bad for the animals, and bad for us.” Nikki says it’s time for people to “stop burying their heads in the sand.” “Do as much as you can to reduce your use of plastics. Use cloth bags to carry shopping, refillable drink bottles, wrap lunches in paper, and pick up litter when you see it.

FEATURE PROPERTY: March 27, 2015

Beachlands - For Sale: Expressions of Interest So what does a market-leading home in Beachlands look like? It looks like this: An ultra modern home on a clifftop position, with panoramic Gulf views. Six car-plus internal garaging, self contained flat, stairway down to the beach, enormous but well hidden water tank and every gadget you can think of – plus some you can’t. Built on the solid concrete foundations of an older Beachlands home, this is a complete transformation. Concrete driveway and adjacent concrete ramp give vehicle as well as pedestrian access to both storeys. Entry to the house is at the top of the ramp via electronically operated wall to floor to ceiling glass doors that open into a porcelain tiled foyer area that gives a hint of what is to come. Visitors to the front door can be scanned via surveillance camera and speaker. To the left of the foyer is access to a carpeted single car garage that could also be a rumpus room, office or perhaps home gym. To the right a wide hallway, with sensor lights, leads to a large open plan lounge and kitchen-dining area. The lounge has floor to ceiling glass, including stacker doors to the front. The result is an enormous view that takes in the Coromandels, Ponui and Waiheke Islands and Motuihe...all at close range. Unimpeded views to the right also allow for a view along the pohutukawa laden clifftop. There’s a large deck out front with a big overhang for protection from the weather, and a smaller deck to the right hand side. Both have clear glass balustrades. The kitchen/dining area features the same aforementioned porcelain tiles, a large kitchen island, two dish washing drawers and a range of the latest appliances plus heaps of storage – all to a minimalist design. Back down the hallway and there’s access to a choice of two master

bedrooms with shared ensuite and walk-in wardrobes, along with guest bedrooms, also with their own ensuite ( including bath). An office looks through the lounge to the view outside, so I’m not sure how you’d ever get any work done. There’s also an internal lift which takes you down to the garage. Two flights of stairs lead to the bottom storey. To the right is a big laundry while to the left is an alcove with shower and toilet, the purpose of which becomes obvious when stepping through the sliding door to the biggest garage I’ve yet seen. This is large enough for at least six cars but is perfect for someone with an interest in restoring vintage cars, precisely the purpose to which it is presently used. A door gives access to a lean-to area for pushbikes, kayaks etc. Modern styling and fixtures are a feature throughout this home and there are many extras such as five heat pumps, burglar alarm, rangehood, waste master, extractor fans, four TV sets, induction cook top and much, much more. Outside, there is separate entry to a completely self contained flat which has 2 bedrooms with open plan living and kitchen area, shower, toilet and laundry. There are steps down the cliff to a big flat rock area below which also has its own set of steps for climbing into the water at high tide. Half way down the cliff steps is a deck area for casting the rod at high tide. This is a top-of-the range home in a top location just waiting for a discerning buyer. ~ Duncan Pardon

Clevedon Buffalo bonanza at cheese awards

Social Club report

Autumn is a golden season for The Clevedon Valley Buffalo Company, which took home two supreme awards and nine medals from the prestigious 2015 Champions of Cheese Awards. CVBC’s Buffalo Boysenberry Yoghurt saw off stiff competition from almost 30 category entrants to scoop the Green Valley Dairies Champion Yoghurt Award. CVBC’s second supreme award came in The Epic Brewing Champion Export category, which recognised the company’s hard work – together with its stockist, artisan food retailer Harris Farms – on building its market share in Australia. To add to its two ‘Champion’ accolades, CVBC was awarded five gold and four silver medals – one for every product it entered. CVBC’s Richard and Helen Dorresteyn are thrilled with the result. “Any one who’s in this industry knows that a whole lot of time, energy and money goes into producing really exceptional products,” Richard says. “It’s brilliant to have that hard work recognised – and it makes those 4am starts in the cheese room just that little bit easier!”

Beachlands-Maraetai Social Club’s first meeting of the year was on March 3 in the Beachlands Hall with 25 member attending. After the president Daphne Petherbridge welcomed all and the anthem sung, we were entertained by Yvonne Bartlett once again. She was just as good and lovely as ever, singing songs from various musical shows. The raffles were won by Spence Nairn and Sheila Colett. Our microphone has gone has missing so if anyone knows where it is, please contact us on 536 6548. The luncheon at Peppperjacks was enjoyed by all with 30 members attending. New members are welcome. – By Chris Horton Clevedon Valley Buffalo Company’s awards.

• FROM PAGE 1 An animal lover, Sue’s first work was a tiger, before she took on a bear and tried her hand at wolves, all with fur almost real enough to stroke. “It’s about giving them personality and bringing them to life,” she says. Sue also enjoys the challenge of portraiture and is currently working on the picture of a childhood friend from England. James Dean, Johnny Depp and an Indian chief have also come to life under Sue’s precise and practised brushstrokes. “When you are doing a portrait you have to see right inside their soul to do it well.” Her artistic journey has led her into contact with other locals who also love to paint. “I think there are a lot of very talented people out here on the Coast,” says Sue. Her own growing pas-

sion for painting proved a therapeutic lifeline when she battled an unexpectd and life threatening illness. “Painting was what kept me going,” say Sue. “I even took my art and my pencils into hospital and had my pictures on the walls. “A lot of me was being taken away but I was still me because I had my art.” With 12 months off work to recuperate, Sue painted virtually every day losing herself in her creations. Her Mellow Yellow lily depiction took some six months to complete using 16 layers of ink to create the stunningly lifelike image. Sue’s work will be on display at the Easter Show over Easter weekend and then at the TC School of Fine Arts in Ben Lomond Crescent from Wednesday 8 April - Sunday 12 April, 9.30am-4pm.

Information will help get school bus answers Specifically Andrew wants parents to research the issue and tell him: • Which buses are full and which are not • How many children are standing. • How big is the problem. He suggests talking with students over the past five years to find out whether they are aware of any injuries during their time on the buses. • How long are children standing for. Ten minutes may be accept-

• FROM PAGE 1 able, but an hour is not, he says. • Complete and collate the petition that has been circulating that calls for all children to be seated. “It will be useful to have, although the reality is it won’t change anything.” “Once we get all that information I am keen to have a discussion where we can perhaps work out a different model. Maybe we need an extra bus and maybe local businesses would be

prepared to help fund it? “Then I plan to talk to Auckland Transport as part of a wider discussion about their plans for this area. There’s $250 million in developer contributions going to the council and I want to see evidence of some of it being spent out here. Whitford Road will be on the agenda.” Andrew says he will also talk with Howick College to get it’s point of view on the bus issue.

PROPERTY WISE ON THE COAST

Time for a PROD! As I have written a lot about investing in property I thought it might be a good time to introduce my 4 step Property investing system. I find this is a very helpful system to avoiding property investing mistakes that can cost thousands of dollars. A good way to consider your options is to “PROD”: P: Plan – set a goal and purpose for the property investment decision. Is it a long term capital gain improvement property or is it a do up that you can add value to by improving it.... R: Research – thoroughly do your homework O: Over commitment - don’t, don’t, don’t ! D: Do it ! Don’t delay any longer, do , do, do, just do it !!! PLAN - Having a goal enables you to decide exactly what you need, and what is enough. If you have enough, you don’t need any more. For example, if your goal is a debt free home, and one investment property that gives you a regular monthly income, plus pension in your retirement, then start with that in mind. Or maybe your goal is not an investment . You might want to trade to a better property, or keep trading up to eventually buy a cliff top property with wonderful views, or a farm....etc

RESEARCH – Once you have decided what the purpose of the property is then you need to do the research - the property, the location, the area, and the numbers; preferably with a broker, accountant, and bank manager. OVER COMMITMENT - At all costs you want to avoid over committing yourself. Consider: Is the rent going to cover the mortgage? Can you comfortably top off the payments even if you have no tenant ? The maintenance of both house and grounds? Is it best to keep your present home and buy an investment, or sell and move up to a larger home ? This can sometimes be done with little extra monthly cost, when rents are taken into account. Either way you are moving up the property ladder. DO IT – once you have made up your mind, GO FOR IT ! One good well planned, well researched deal can set you up for life. Think long term. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

These 115 poppies (right) have been made by members of the Kawakawa Bay Crafters and are being sent to “5000 Poppies NZ.” The original “5000 Poppies” was formed in Australia to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. Last year “5000 Poppies NZ” followed, with the goal of 18,000 poppies as a visual tribute to each of the Kiwi personnel killed in World War I. The response from craft enthusiasts around the country has been amazing and to date nearly 26,000 have been knitted, crocheted or stitched. Other supporters are busily attaching the poppies to panels which will be displayed on ANZAC Day at the Airforce Museum in Christchurch and the Navy Museum in Devonport. At a later date the panels will be displayed at other venues around New Zealand. So far 18 panels have been assembled. Other groups of crafters are also working towards displays in their local libraries, RSAs and museums. What began as a small project by two women in Victoria, Australia, has now grown into a huge ground swell of interest and support. Photo: Clinton Schubert. www.intopix.co.nz

Special event marks 150th settler anniversary A special commemoration marking the 150th anniversary of the Waikato Immigration Scheme – which

brought new settlers to Clevedon – is being held on Sunday March 29. The Clevedon community is being invited to a guided cemetery walk (12.15pm from the Clevedon Presbyterian Church cemetery), followed by a picnic lunch at the McNicol Homestead before a 2pm ceremony at the Clevedon Bridge Historic Reserve. The Waikato Immigration Scheme of 1864 was a result of New Zealand finding itself short of labourers, stonemasons, domestic staff, tradespeople

blacksmiths etc. A service industry was required to assist the rural farming community to overcome problems due to this lack of skilled workers. The scheme was implemented to bring immigrants from South Africa, Ireland and Scotland. Thirteen sailing ships were involved but the ship that brought people to Wairoa South (Clevedon) was the SS Viola. The Viola left Glasgow, Scotland, on December 8, 1864 and dropped anchor in the Auckland harbour on April 4 1865.

On board were 340 Scottish immigrants who had endured four months of confinement. The settlers were loaded into cutters and made their way south to the mouth of the Wairoa River. They made it to the Wairoa Landing Place, now known as the Clevedon Historic Reserve, on the downstream side of the Clevedon Bridge. They were initially sheltered in the former settlers’ stockade at McNicol’s and in tents nearby. For about half the passengers their journey was completed after they walked a track to Papakura. Many of them stayed for a while at the Kiri Kiri Redoubt not far from the top of Old Wairoa Road. The Wairoa Road, Papakura, used to be the main road to Clevedon.

Many of these settlers ended up farming in Settlement Road, Papakura. Land offered to the Viola settlers was in Settlement Road, Clevedon, now known as McNicol Road. The Government of the day was confiscating land off Maori as a result of the New Zealand Wars. Many new Wairoa South settlers could not have survived the rigours of being given a block of this land (usually ten acres) without the early assistance and generosity of local Maori and the settlers’ compatriots who had arrived up to 12 years earlier. Ironically, the Viola settlers came to fill gaps in the service industry, but it seems most of them took up farming. Many Viola descendants still live in the Clevedon district.

High tea fundraiser The Clevedon Family Centre’s recent high tea raised more than $350 for the Papakura Family Service Centre. Guest speakers were Papakura centre manager Louise Belcher and counsellor Melodie Breuer. “I think it was wonderful for peple to put a face to the name of the Papakura centre that we, as a church, have supported in practical ways over a number of years,” says Clevedon family centre manager Heather Chapman. “We heard firsthand the stories of what they are dealing with day to day and the diffference they are making in families’ lives.”

Goat control in Hunuas A number of tracks, campsites and access ways in the Hunua Ranges Regional Park will be closed until June 19 for feral goat control operations by Auckland Council. Feral goats are a significant pest threat in the Hunua Ranges and it is important to keep them under control to reduce damage to the unique biodiversity and allow native flora to mature. All tracks will be open for recreational use on weekends and public holidays during the closure period. The closures will not affect the park’s most popular walking track around the Hunua Falls. This will remain open and visitors are welcome. Auckland Council Senior Regional Biosecurity Advisor Mark Mitchell says: “The on-going control programme in the Hunua Ranges is reaping excellent results in controlling feral goats to low numbers. “Goats destroy native forest. They eat the foliage of most trees and plants, including seedlings and saplings. “The control work has allowed the natural regeneration of our native forest and significantly healthier native bush with many plant species now flourishing. “Goat control operations are contracted to expert professional hunters, who must meet our stringent operational requirements. Hunting zones have been established and mapped out to allow for minimal disruptions to the area,” says Mark Mitchell. Signs will be placed at appropriate track entry points, including car parks and arrival areas, to inform visitors about the temporary closure of tracks and campsites, including restrictions on recreational hunting. For further information on pest control operations in Hunua Ranges Regional Park and to view a map of the control area visit: http://regionalparks. aucklandcouncil.govt. nz/hunuaranges Or phone (09) 301 0101.
