Cockle gatherers at Kawakawa Bay on New Year’s Day...this was one of several groups on the beach that day. The beach is one of the most popular in the region for shellfish gathering.

Kawakawa Bay residents fed-up with beach shellfish poachers Friday night last week saw fisheries officer at Kawakawa Bay confiscate the vehicle of two cockle collectors who had 927 cockles between them. The legal limit is 50 each. This, say Bay residents, is typical of what is happening at the Bay and many offenders are not being caught. Residents are so fed-up with illegal cockle gathering that about 80 of them attended a beachfront meeting with Hunua MP Andrew Bayly last Saturday morning. Three Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) fisheries officers, headed by District Compliance Manager Mike Simmons, also attended. The officers pointed out that the vast majority of collectors were taking only their legal limit. Residents said they were concerned about the ones that were not, as well as other behaviour that included illegal camping, discarded rubbish (including cockle shells) and collectors taking up all the available parking. Just what impact the cockle collecting – legal and illegal – is having on the cockle beds won’t be known until about May. Over the next few weeks MPI will be conducting a survey to determine the size of the cockle resource at the Bay. The last MPI survey was done in 2007, although Auckland Council also conducts surveys. The Kawakawa Bay Community Association wrote to MPI two years ago asking for seasonal closures (to cockle collectors) so the cockle beds could have time to recover. This requires scientific evidence of cockle depletion which can then prompt a closure recommendation to the Minister and then to Cabinet for ap-

proval. The other option is a Rahui – as has been in place as Duders Beach for some years now. This is an iwi initiated beach closure. Mike Simmons told the meeting that neither could be considered until the outcome of the upcoming survey was known. Andrew Bayly said he would organise a meeting between residents and scientists once the survey results were known. One issue that prompted consider-

able discussion was that of volunteer fisheries officers. The MPI is allowed a total of 62 volunteer officers across the region, in addition to its paid staff. There are about 50 at present. Several Bay residents said they would be prepared to train as volunteer officers but only if they could patrol their local beach. Lifetime lessons learnt from losing THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz I’ve been following with interest the media debate over the Howick Pakuranga Principals’ Association introducing a Fair Play Charter to East Auckland Primary Schools. Under this charter coaches are encouraged to intervene if two mismatched teams are playing each other and one is giving the other a huge thumping. At that point players from the winning team can be mixed with players from the losing team to even the odds. This resonates with me on a personal level. I was born with a competitive nature combined with an almost total lack of sporting prowess to go with it. This was a recipe for frustration and disillusionment. But I’ve discovered that, like most things in life, losing is a learning process and it hasn’t detracted from a lifetime of enjoying playing sport. My attitude to losing as I approach the age of 60 is very different from when I was 16. I’ve learnt important lessons along the way and I reckon kids – even young ones – should have the opportunity to learn those same lessons.

Also, schools should take a long term view: 1. Winners won’t always be winners and losers won’t always be losers. Many years ago I was a sports writer for the Auckland Star newspaper and occasionally I would get a call from a proud parent to tell me that little Johnny had scored 50 goals for the season with his Under 12 soccer team, while the team itself had scored 150 goals and conceded 4. Proud parent thought this would be a wonderful article for the Star. I would tell them to come back to me when little Johnny had gone through puberty, was 16, and still scoring 50 goals a season...then we could talk. Puberty can be a great leveller. Brilliant little Johnny can suddenly end up with two left feet. Or little Johnny’s opponent, Jack, can suddenly gain three inches and several kilos of new muscles. 2. Little Jack the Loser may be total rubbish at soccer but at age 16 may suddenly discover he has amazing prowess at Greco-Roman wrestling...or something. 3. Most important of all, both winning and losing present wonderful teaching opportunities to young children if they have a coach/teacher/parent who is wise enough to do so. Those teams that win every game of the season by 10

THE BIBLE SAYS: My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense -Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. goals can be taught how to win well...the importance of humility, of fair play, of giving credit to a losing team that gives its all. They can also be taught that they won’t always be winners. Even if one of them turns out to be the next Ritchie McCaw, their time at the top will be limited. At some stage age will catch-up and they will have to return to the ranks of us mortals. Losers can be taught the importance of losing graciously, of not losing heart, and being willing to give it a go again next week. And if little Jack the goalkeeper has conceded 10 goals, he can be congratulated for letting in fewer goals than the 12 he conceded the week before. A friend taught me to play golf a few years ago. And, yes, I’m complete rubbish at that as well. But I learnt to set my own goals during a game...maybe to reduce my score by just a couple of strokes... and not worry about the guy next to me who is playing brilliantly. Sport is character building. That’s what it’s all about. It’s important to allow children to experience that, whether they are naturally gifted at sport or not. And for the losers, take heart. Even winners have their off days. It may be the day you next get to play them!

Parent starts school bus petition Gas Maraetai’s Liz Annette is the latest parent to take up the battle over children standing on school buses between Beachlands Maraetai and Howick. Like many parents over the years, Liz, whose daughter is attending Howick College for the first time this year, is horrified at the number of children being crammed into the Maraetai school bus. “I’m told that legally buses are allowed to have 26 children standing. It is not acceptable to have 26 children standing in a bus,” says Liz. She says that is especially true on the open roads where the school buses travel at open road speeds. “Parents are telling me that their children get quite frightened on the bus,” says Liz. “Ask parents how they feel and they will tell you the drive is hideous. Are we going to wait until a serious accident happens? “There are buses to some of the other schools that are half full. Why can’t the schools get together and see if they can organise children onto other buses?” Liz says she has spoken to Howick College and was told that perhaps a petition might help get the rules changed. So she is doing just that and a petition is now available for signing at the counter of Gas Maraetai service station..

An enjoyable day’s fishing with his family between Motuihe and Rakino Islands rapidly turned to near tragedy on Waitangi weekend after they noticed the large yacht heading directly for their anchored 5.5 metre craft. “My nephew and son yelled and waved their arms but the yacht kept coming straight at us,” recalls T. “It towered over us like a ship. I told everyone to jump overboard – I was so sure it was going to hit us.” T jumped into the sea, but family members remained “frozen” on deck. At the last moment the yacht veered away narrowly missing their craft, but instead hitting T floating in the water. “It was on top of me the bow got me and then the keel went down my ribs – I thought it had split them open – and then I saw the propeller coming towards my head,” recalls T. He tried to kick down and out of its way but

the edge caught his leg inflicting a deep gash. After surfacing T lost consciousness and his son James and nephew Anthony jumped overboard to support him. Meanwhile the yacht circled back, the yachtie initially unaware he had hit Tauloto. Nearby boaties also came to their assistance. T was hoisted unconscious onto the yacht which took him to rendezvous with a Coastguard vessel that had been called. Coastguard medics deemed T to be in a critical condition and took him directly to Mechanics Bay from where he was transferred by ambulance to Auckland hospital. After two days in hospital, (he discharged himself) T is now recovering at home with multiple bruising to his chest and arms and stitches in his right leg. His brother Nick and nephew were also taken to hospital suffering injuries from helping retrieve T. “What happened that day is an absolute miracle – I know I wouldn’t be here otherwise,” says T. “It could easily have been five of us killed.” Polic coastal master of the Police Maritime

Unit, Garry Larsen, says a 62-year-old Auckland yachtsman is likely to face charges. “He’s a very experienced yachtsman who made a very serious mistake not keeping a proper lookout which all boaties are required to do by law,” says Garry. “He’s very remorseful about what has happened.” The yachtsman had put his craft on autopilot while he went below deck to investigate a gas alarm. Garry says it is a timely reminder for boaties to remain vigilant at all times. It is the second near miss T has experienced while fishing, due to the inattention of other boaties. Over a year ago a motor launch grazed up against T’s boat anchored off Maraetai. “I’m not in a hurry to

go back out on the water again,” he admits. Following the latest incident, T says his teenage son James has decided to join the local Coastguard. “I think there is a real safety message in this for everyone.”

Beachlands - For Sale: Auction “You should buy this place...you could put a printing press out back!,” the owner said as he greeted me on the back deck. I assumed it was a bit of a sales pitch exaggeration but, yes, actually there is room for a printing press –small one at any rate! But more about that in a moment. This two storey plaster exterior property on First View Ave will be very familiar to long time Beachlands residents and was once home to a small fashion business. A brick driveway leads to the front sliding door which enters into an unusual open plan layout. Directly in front is a kitchen which – even though it is narrow – still has plenty of bench space, cupboards and an oven top with rangehood.

and – unusually – not an ensuite as such, but a carpeted wash area. The upstairs bathroom is right next door, also carpeted, with sunken bath and a beautiful wooden vanity unit. Back downstairs to the front entrance and immediately to the right is another stairway up and two stairs down. The stairway leads to a mezzanine office area. The two steps down lead you into an area that comes as a complete surprise...one that makes the owner’s initial cryptic comment about a printing press now become clear.

To its right is a formal dining area overlooking a wooden deck area and courtyard. To the left is the family area with Lockwood-style wood, plaster ceiling and fireplace. Already it is becoming clear that this is a home that oozes character – one that has a sense of fun and family appeal.

It is a huge completely open area with two outside entrances, that was once the aforementioned fashion store. There is an enormous space which could be another home business or could be partitioned into a couple more bedrooms to form a guest wing. It includes a small laundry area.

A small hallway runs off the family room leading to a bathroom with wet area shower and toilet. The family room also opens, via an internal wooden bifold door, into the formal living area.

Outside, the back courtyard has a wooden ramp in one corner that leads down to another complete surprise – a hidden lawn surrounded by curved raised gardens with camellias, fruit trees, a vege garden and large mature puriri tree. To one side is a stand-alone garage with big work space.

Carpeted stairs with wooden balustrade lead to the top storey and another small hallway off which there are four bedrooms, all with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. The flue from the downstairs fireplace runs through one of the single bedrooms.

This is a big property, full of character and with huge potential either as a family home, for extended family, or work and income. ~ Duncan Pardon

Best time to buy ....yesterday!

Hi Folks, I have had an enormous amount of comment about my last article particularly regarding my point: Most people over estimate what they can achieve in the short term and massively under estimate what they can achieve in the long term... Going back to the prices in Ponsonby in 1972: That year the Labour Government brought in a speculation tax of 90%. The next day I was in the office and every phone call was from a vendor withdrawing their property from sale. The speculators just rented out their houses and even old people took their house off the market – just in case they had to pay tax. This created a huge shortage of properties for sale. At the same time people were just discovering Ponsonby. The prices went from $10,000-$12,000 to over $20,000 in one year. Those people who sold their Ponsonby properties at the peak now, like many other people, can’t afford to buy their own houses back! So the moral of the story is even those who bought at the peak but have kept the property for the long term, are the ones who are now winning. The Reserve Bank has said there will be a correction. But nobody knows when there will be a correction. It may be a year or more away. There have been many booms and busts since 1972 but the long term result is the same. It is not timing of the market, it is time in the market that counts. The best time to start investing in By Peter Brinkley AREINZ property is yesterday! in Karaka), this means a huge fundraising challenge. Jasmine needs to raise about $12,500 so she can represent her country at the ice hockey world champs in Dumfries, Scotland (March 30 – April 5); before heading to Rosario in Argentina to represent New Zealand at the inline hockey world champs (June 7 to 13). It’s a juggling act she is now well familiar with, but finances have always been an obstacle. Both are winter sports, and sometimes the two sports’ playing schedules clash, but never for tournaments and world championships. For local games Jasmine sometimes has to do a bit of juggling. “I have played inline since I was five after watching my big brother play. I went all the time and then begged mum and dad to let me play.” Jasmine made her first New Zealand in inline at 13. “I was playing with people who played both

sports and who invited me to give ice hockey a go. “I resisted for quite a while but finally agreed to play. Within eight weeks I was in the regional team, from there trialed for New Zealand and made it into the Ice Ferns in 2011.” Jasmine says the two sports are very similar – apart from one being played on ice and the other on a sports court. Inline has four players and a goalie and tends to be a bit more fluid. Ice hockey has five players and a goalie, the offside rule is different and it tends to be more structured with players passing the puck through the various zones. “Stopping is very different. Try to ice stop in inline and you’ll fall over,” says Jasmine. “Ice hockey is more physical especially playing with the men playing full check. The girls also tend to be much bigger.” Jasmine plays inline for the Mt Wellington Panthers, in a senior team and women’s

Which is her favourite of the two sports? “I guess inline is always closer to me because I’ve done it for so mucn longer and at the last world champs was ranked third in the world individually. “So I have gone further in that sport..and I know my feet so much better!” In ice hockey, the Ice Ferns play in Division 2A, and are ranked around 25th in the world. We come out here quite a bit [on patrol] especially over the holidays when the beaches are full.” As part of her fundraising effort, Jasmine is organising a raffle and is looking for sponsorship from local businesses. 8 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (February 20th 2015)

Ricki Herbert opens Te Puru soccer talent centre By Teri Doran One of New Zealand’s best known footballing names was at the Te Puru Community Centre recently to launch a talent centre on the Pohutukawa Coast. Ricki Herbert, former All Whites and Wellington Phoenix coach, has already established centres in Wellington, Kapiti and Tauranga, and is set to launch his fourth in Beachlands. Ricki Herbert, who

has won 61 caps for his country, and coached the national side for eight years, including leading the All Whites team in their 2010 undefeated FIFA World Cup campaign, came to Te Puru to outline the plans for the new facility to locals. Brain Preston, president of Beachlands Maraetai Association Club Football, says this is a unique chance for local kids to be able to

develop their skills and reach their full potential under the direction of one of the country’s most established football greats. “This is a real opportunity for BMAFC. We will now have the chance to provide pathways in football that we have never had before,” says Brian. The club president also hopes that having the facility locally will mean that BMAFC will retain players that otherwise might have to go elsewhere to seek out opportunities, and also attract players from outside the area. With Ricki Herbert Football Academy talent centres receiving rave reviews in other parts of the North Island, this new venture provides children in Beachlands, Maraetai and surrounding areas of Auckland the opportunity to have top quality coaching on their door step. “This is something

that has been well received, and it’s an opportunity for kids in this part of Auckland,” says Ricki Herbert. “Most people around New Zealand are looking for more sustainability in their own backyard. Ricki says the academy endeavours to provide components of footballing development across a broad spectrum of areas. “This is an opportunity for a lot of kids to flourish and maybe realise their potential at whatever level that maybe”. The proposed venue for the talent centre will be Beachlands Domain, with a minimum of two coaching sessions a week coinciding with school term times throughout the year. Commencement date will be guided by enrolments over the next couple of weeks, but there is the potential to start in term one. The academy will also

Ricki Herbert during the talent centre launch at Te Puru. provide pathways for talented youngsters to participate in national programmes as well as international competitions. A group of local children who participated in the RHFA programmes at BMAFC last year will travel to Taupo this weekend to participate in the academy’s Elite

cover apparel, and a weekly payment of $30 per child for coaching sessions, payable only while enrolled in the programme. To register interest and enrol in the talent centre visit www.rickiherbert. co.nz/rhfa-talent-centre and click on the Beachlands Maraetai link.

New pump station up and running Watercare’s newly upgraded Te Puru pump station is now up and running, following a ninemonth long, $1.8 million upgrade. The upgrade increases storage capacity at the Te Puru pump station, which is a collection point for four other local pump stations, two in Beachlands and two in Maraetai. Project manager Justinn Valerio says the upgrade will improve the network’s ability to manage expected growth in the area, and reduce the likelihood of wet weather overflows. Meanwhile, work on a wastewater pipeline connecting the Beachlands Village New Avenues development and Watercare’s Okaroro Drive Treatment Plant is on schedule to be completed by February 2015.
