State residents can easily sign up for Affordable Care Act coverage

Senator Californians will find none of the troubles plaguing the federal government's web site to sign up for health insurance, according to California State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez of the 24th District. Speaking at the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Government Affairs Forum on Nov. 7, Hernandez reminded attendees that California has its own Covered California web site for state residents to access for the national Affordable Care Act that became national law in 2010. Among the benefits of the new service: • All adults over 18 must now carry health insurance, including the 4.5 mil. - 5 mil. currently

Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is warning customers that there is an increase in utility phone scams. Many GWP customers have recently reported receiving phone calls from impersonators posing as customer service representatives asking customers to pay their GWP bill over the phone. Callers direct customers to purchase a “Green Pack Money Card” from 7-Eleven or Rite Aid convenient stores, or face an immediate water or power shut-off. These scammers also use sophisticated spoofing software to display GWP or a local

By 2016, the penalty increases to $695 per adult and $374.50 per child or 2.5% of family income, whichever is greater. (Exceptions for very low-income and a few groups.) • No one can be denied coverage, even those with pre-existing medical conditions. • There is a maximum amount that any insured individual would ever have to pay in the event of a catastrophic medical expense - $6,350 for an individual, and $12,700 for a family.

Buddhist Tzu Chi foundation sends relief to typhoon Haiyan survivors Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded, left behind a wide swath of destruction in the Philippines on November 8, with the highly populated city of Tacloban hit hardest. Currently, death toll estimates reach as high as 10,000, and as rescue efforts have been slowed by the enormous scope of the disaster region, casualties may continue to rise. In addition, countless people have been left without homes, in dire need of food and clean drinking water. Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation has already launched its disaster relief effort and prepared 200,000 individual servings of instant rice meals and 30,000 blankets to be shipped to the disaster region. On November 12, the first shipment of 30,000 blankets and 60,000 instant rice meals departed for the disaster region via C-130 military transport aircraft. From November 13, disaster assessment and medical teams comprised of 40 Tzu Chi Philippines volunteers will fly from Manila to Cebu and then

to the disaster region to begin the first stage of disaster assessment and relief for survivors. The disaster assessment team will be carrying 1500 packs of toiletries and daily necessities to meet the immediate needs of disaster survivors. The medical team, comprised of 10 doctors and nurses from Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA), will help provide immediate medical services to those who need them. Following initial assessment, volunteers will provide care and relief according to the specific needs of disaster survivors. According to Tzu Chi Department of Religious Affairs Deputy Director Wang Yun-jing, “We have established command centers in both Manila and Cebu. Since Cebu is closest to the disaster area, Tzu Chi can use our local offices in that area to store relief goods and make arrangements for volunteers’ transportation into the disaster area.” Disaster relief on such a massive scale is not new to Tzu Chi, whose volunteers in the United States

have provided relief after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, among other major and minor disasters. In just the first two months after last October’s devastating Hurricane Sandy, volunteers provided nearly $10 million in emergency cash aid and more than 9,000 blankets to approximately 16,000 affected families throughout New York and New Jersey. Following the principle of “first to arrive and last to leave,” volunteers continue to support especially vulnerable communities even one year later. Tzu Chi National Headquarters in San Dimas, CA, invites donations of relief funds and kind thoughts from individuals across the United States to send to disaster survivors in the Philippines. Please make checks payable to “Tzu Chi” and write “Disaster Fund” on the memo line. Questions may be directed to your local Tzu Chi office, via email to info@us.tzuchi.org, or to the donor hotline: (888) 989-8244 (9am-6pm PST).

International Religious Lecturer and Peace Activist Mr. Man Lee addressed students and religious leaders at the Bovard Auditorium at USC last Saturday in regards to the method of peace “hidden” in the Bible’s Book of Revelation. To a packed auditorium of diverse attendees, including Pasadena residents, Lee explained the books of Matthew 13, 24, 25 and Revelation calling individuals of faith to seek and understand the divine plan for peace in Scripture. The seminar is the finale of Lee’s 7th World Tour to meet with students and

national and Religious leaders around the world, many of whom, after meeting him, have said that he has the passion and materials to make world peace possible. Last Friday, Lee organized hundreds of students from school organizations of USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal Poly Pomona, Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton to rally for peace aboard the SS Lane Victory in San Pedro, a fully operational cargo ship which was used during the Korean War to rescue refugees. The movement of peace has caught the inter-

est of leaders like Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Ethiopia President Girma Wolde-Giorgis, South Africa President Jacob Zuma, Malawi President Joyce Banda, Phallop Thaiarry of the World Fellowship of Buddhists and Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Leo Dion. “Mr. Lee has a message of peace and religion that is relevant to anyone, young or old. We are honored to have Mr. Lee speak to the Los Angeles community” said Michelle Chang of International Peace Youth Group Los Angeles.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

PETA protests TOR’s inclusion of SeaWorld Float

By SHEL SEGAL Members of PETA – or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – took to the streets of Pasadena on Nov. 7 to protest the marine amusement park SeaWorld’s involvement in this year’s Tournament of Roses parade, which will take place on Jan. 1, 2014. Protesting in front of the Tournament House, located on Orange Grove Boulevard, Matt Bruce – a campaigner for PETA – said the Rose Parade is not a proper platform for a company like SeaWorld. “PETA is calling on the Tournament of Roses Association to cancel their plans for a SeaWorld float,” Bruce said. “The SeaWorld float is deceptive in the extreme. It shows orcas swimming with their families and leaping in the magnificent sea when SeaWorld deprives them of everything that is natural to them by forcibly and violently taking them from their families and confining them in tanks that are

the human equivalent of a bathtub.” Bruce said the captivity the animals at SeaWorld face is just cruel. “These animals go insane from the confinement,” he said. “They bang their heads against the walls. They chew on the tanks’ gates, breaking their teeth and then lash out at each other violently.” He added he is hoping the Tournament of Roses Association changes its mind about letting SeaWorld join the New Year’s Day festivities. “We feel that a company that makes its money while being notorious for animal abuse should not have a float at a family friendly event like the Rose Parade,” Bruce said. “We are going to continue putting pressure on the Tournament of Roses Association and encourage people to boycott SeaWorld.” But he said the association’s past actions indicate that it probably won’t

change its mind. “The fact that they’re willing to let SeaWorld buy its way into the Rose Parade shows how out of touch the Tournament of Roses Association is with the growing anti-SeaWorld sentiment,” he said. Tournament officials released the following statement later that day expressing their support for SeaWorld without addressing the protesters’ concerns: “The Pasadena Tournament of Roses is pleased to have SeaWorld participate with a float entry in the 125th Rose Parade. SeaWorld previously sponsored a float in the Rose Parade in 1989, 1990 and 1991. This year’s float is designed to illustrate the wonder of sea life in a manner that can inspire millions to learn more about our oceans, which is consistent with SeaWorld’s ongoing mission.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com).

The Tournament of Roses 96th Rose Queen and her court may be on a whirlwind schedule, but they weren’t too busy to stop by for their annual tea with the girls living at Hillsides. Rose Queen Ana Marie Acosta, who attends Polytechnic School, and the six Rose Princesses visited Hillsides’ auditorium on the charity’s main campus in Pasadena on Thursday, November 7, 2013 for an afternoon of crafts, fresh fruit, vegetables, cookies, and Dots cupcakes. The afternoon was a huge hit for the girls of Hillsides, who enjoyed every minute of their “royal treatment.”

“I love meeting new princesses every year. I want to become one myself,” said one Hillsides teen who had participated in the tea for five years. She had been counting down the weeks until the event for over a month, and she was thrilled that the day had finally arrived. The afternoon started with the Royal Court introducing themselves, each providing her name, age, school, and favorite food. When Princess Sarah Elizabeth Hansen, 19, who attends Pasadena City College, shared the fact that she liked pizza, she received applause and laughter from the audience. Hillsides Director of

Community Resources Laura Kelso encouraged the Hillsides girls to stand up and share the same information, which some willingly did. When one girl was hesitant to introduce herself, Queen Ana stood up with her so it would lessen the awkwardness. After the introductions, the girls decorated frames with stickers, colored markers, and patterned duct tape, with the Queen and Princesses giving advice and using the time to get to know the girls. “It’s beyond special being able to inspire, help or provide giggles to girls, and can keep you beaming for days,” said Princess Elizabeth Woolf, 17, from La Canada High School. She said community service was ingrained in her by her parents, who encouraged her to participate in service at church. “The Rose Queen and Royal Court is an amazing Pasadena tradition, and we feel fortunate Hillsides is able to share in it,” said Hillsides chief executive officer, Joseph M. Costa. “This annual visit is something the girls look forward to, and we can’t thank the Tournament of Roses Association enough for making it happen.” The Rose Queen and her Royal Court make more than 100 community and media appearances during their reign, culminating with the 125th Rose Parade and 100th Rose Bowl Game. The Hillsides tea, which lasted from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m., was the last of two events on the day’s schedule. Hillsides is a premier provider dedicated to improving the overall wellbeing and functioning of children, youth, and families in need. Lifeline for Pets Cat of the Week:'Peekaboo’ Animals with special needs are usually the last to be adopted, if ever. These are the seniors, the dark colored ones, and the ones with a medical or behavioral condition. Yet, they are just as deserving of a home as any other “normal” pet, and often need very little in the way of meds. In this month of Thanksgiving, we will be featuring a few of our wonderful animals, who, by the way, just happen to have a special need. PEEKABOO is a 6-month old kitten, female. She is all gray and looks much like a Russian Blue. She was rescued from a feral colony because she was being picked on by others. Since then, she has become

a very loving, friendly, and playful little gal. She only has one eye, but it doesn’t stop her from running around or doing anything that any other kitten does! No meds are needed! YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.
