Just ask Neil the pig: Flattery will get you on page one! According to our friends over at Sierra Madre Tattler, John Crawford’s post Sunday, our cover story on Neil was a hit. “There is some very good reporting on the Neil the Pig story in this week's Sierra Madre Weekly. by terry miller Record crowds filled the stands at Santa Anita for the 30th annual Breeders’ Cup Classic thoroughbred horse races – one of the most prestigious events in the horse racing industry. Climaxed by a Breeders’ Cup Classic that “typified everything that’s right

about Thoroughbred racing--the beauty, the drama and the rhythmic oneness of both horse and rider” --Mucho Macho Man was a near-unanimous choice as Horse of the Meet in Santa Anita’s Autumn Media Poll, by virtue of his thrilling nose victory over Will Take Charge in the $5 million Classic at 1 ¼ miles on Nov. 2.

It was the second Grade I win at the meet for Mucho Macho Man, who won the Awesome Again Stakes by 4 ¼ lengths on Sept. 28. Each time the 5-year-old bay horse was ridden by 50-year-old Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, from Sierra Madre, returned to the saddle in January after a seven-year retirement. Owned by Dean and Patty Reeves and trained by Kathy Ritvo, Mucho Macho Man earned $2,750,000 for his Classic victory, more than double his previous career bankroll of $2,590,410, and increasing it to $5,340,410. “I’m happier for my horse,” Ritvo said after the exciting triumph, in Please see page 6

Propelled by three wins over the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Mike Smith won his second consecutive Bill Shoemaker Award as the most outstanding jockey of the 30th edition of the event, held at Santa Anita Park, Nov. 1-2. Smith scored backto-back victories in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon on London Bridge and Outstrip (GB) in the Juvenile Turf on Friday, and was victorious aboard Mizdirection in the Geico Turf

Sprint on Saturday, extending his all-time lead in Breeders’ Cup victories by a jockey to 20. Combined with a second-place finish on Laugh Track in the Xpressbet Sprint, a thirdplace finish on Emollient in the Filly & Mare Turf and a fourth-place finish on Royal Delta in the Distaff, Smith’s 37-point total edged Gary Stevens by four points in a 10-5-3-1 scoring system based on the first- through fourth-place finishes in the 14 Breeders’ Cup races. Stevens, 50, enjoying

a remarkable return to the races after a seven-year absence, booted home winners in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff with Beholder and the Classic on Mucho Macho Man. He was awarded five points for finishing second in the Juvenile Fillies on She’s a Tiger, following a disqualification from first place; and earned another second-place finish on Havana in the Juvenile and a third-place finish on Indy Point in the Turf. The Bill Shoemaker Award is named in honor of one of the greatest jockeys in the history of Thoroughbred racing. Shoemaker, a winner of the Kentucky Derby four times, won more than 8,800 races in a career that spanned more than 40 years. In 1987, at 56, Shoemaker won the Breeders’ Cup Classic aboard Ferdinand. “It was a great honor to win the award last year for the first time but winning it a second time means much more to me because it’s so much harder to do,” said the 48-year-old Smith, from Roswell, N.M. Commenting on the late Shoemaker, Smith said “As small as he was, he was a giant of a man on horseback and off.” Bill Shoemaker Award winners: 2003: Alex Solis 2004: John Velazquez 2005: Garrett Gomez 2006: Frankie Dettori 2007: Garrett Gomez 2008: Garrett Gomez 2009: Julien Leparoux 2010: Garrett Gomez 2011: John Velazquez 2012: Mike Smith 2013 Mike Smith

State schools Chief Tom Torlakson names California Teachers of the Year State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today named five outstanding educators as the 2014 California Teachers of the Year. He further named one of them as California’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year. “These outstanding teachers have my thanks and admiration for the work they do every day to provide our students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed,” Torlakson said. “They bring talent, dedication, and more to a job that is as critical as it is challenging—and even more rewarding.” The five 2014 California Teachers of the Year are: o Timothy Smith, a ninth through twelfth grade Algebra I and AP Statistics teacher at Florin High School in Sacramento, Elk Grove Unified School District, Sacramento County. Torlakson nominated Smith as California’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition. o Angelo “Ang” Bracco, a sixth through eighth grade special education teacher at Solano Middle School in Vallejo, Vallejo City Unified School District, Solano County. o Michael Hayden, who teaches choral music and music appreciation to high school students at Mira Costa High School, Manhattan Beach Unified School District, Los Angeles County. o Linda Horist, a second grade teacher at Nohl Ranch Elementary School, Anaheim, Orange Unified School District, Orange County.

o Jessica Pack, a sixth grade language arts, social studies, and technology teacher at James Workman Middle School, Cathedral City, Palm Springs Unified School District, Riverside County. Profiles and contact information for each teacher are attached. The California Teachers of the Year Program began in 1972 to acknowledge the growing complexity of challenges faced by the profession and the need to promote collaboration among teachers to address challenges. The program is also designed to encourage new teachers to enter the field. The competition is open to educators teaching pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. County offices of education nominate winners through their regional Teachers of the Year competitions. A state selection committee reviews candidates' applications and conducts site visits to evaluate the teachers' rapport with students, classroom environment, presentation skills, and teaching methods, among other criteria. The teachers are interviewed at the California Department of Education in Sacramento. The State Superintendent then selects the awardees. The 2014 California Teachers of the Year, the finalists, and semi-finalists will be honored by Torlakson at a gala to be held February 3, 2014. The list of finalists and semi-finalists is attached. For more information on the award program, please visit the California Department of Education’s California Teachers of the Year Web page.

was removed from the property in Sierra Madre and thankfully placed with a farm rescue organization and hopefully live long and crow often in a farm environment - not a residential area. The Los Angeles Times followed up on the story on Monday and said the reason Neil was initially discovered was that the officer who went on the rooster call happened to peek over the fence and see the beloved town porcine ( Neil) prancing in his pen. Some call it coincidence and others have called it revenge. While noting the Sierra Madre city ordinance was only for Hogs, the Los Angeles Times reports that Neil might not want to visit Seal Beach any time soon where ,only this week, the city adopted an anti-pig ordinance. Suggestions in town run the gamut for Neil’s future. “ Neil for Mayor” is one of the more popular proposals but then there’s a good chance Neil will be nominated for the Sierra Madre Fourth of July Parade Grand

Marshal. An honor, indeed. As for Neil’s ‘mum’ Dr. Emerson again says whatever Neil can do to help

the Police and Fire Dept. in the City of Sierra Madre – he’ll gladly lend his portly portrait.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Jewish Federation’s 15th Annual Jewish Book Festival runs through Nov. 23 By SHEL SEGAL

Ten acclaimed authors – among them historians, novelists, pop culture mavens and some of the most eminent news editors in the country – are coming to the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys for the Jewish Federation’s 15th Annual Jewish Book Festival. The festival got underway on Saturday night at Temple Shaarei Torah in Arcadia and will run through Nov. 23. Area synagogues and alternative venues from Glendale to Ontario will feature award-winning and top authors combined with musical performances. All author events are open to the general public, most are free of charge and a few special evening events are well worth the ticket price. Marilyn Weintraub, associate director of the Federation, said work goes on for the festival year-round. “We have our opening night event for our 15th annual Jewish book festival,” Weintraub said. “We’ve been doing it for so many

years. We have a committee that works very hard all year, selecting authors, reviewing books and making decisions on authors we are bringing to the community.” Weintraub added the event is very unique. “In our area it’s the only Jewish book festival, in the greater Los Angeles area and Los Angeles Countywide,” she said. “There are some synagogues on the Westside that do have some author events. But we’re the only one that does a Jewish book festival.” She added it takes place all over the map as the local Jewish community is very spread out. “Ours is all month, usually six weeks,” she said. “Ours is a large geographic area. It’s Ontario to Glendale and down to Whittier. It brings our community together from all over.” Festival-goers will get to meet a fascinating mix of adventurers, renowned journalists, novelists and biographers, and get the inside

scoop on everything from Watergate to the Wild West – even the true story of how the Food Network channel became a national pop culture icon. It’s the 50th anniversary of “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh” – and everyone from Boomers to those who have seen a summer camp movie know it’s by heart. On Nov. 2, the Jewish Federation welcomes Mark Cohen, a savvy observer of show business, as he presents his biography of comedian Allan Sherman. Cohen’s Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman gives us an unprecedented look at the complex and versatile man whose comedy influenced everyone from Jason Alexander to “Weird Al” Yankovic. The festival’s opening night evening included a “sing-a-long” with Allan Sherman aficionado Cantor Paul Buch and friends. (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com).

control funding formula to determine what our funding numbers look like so we can operate the district in a sound way.” Hu, who was re-elected to the board, said it’s even sweeter the second time around. “I am really honored and humbled to be elected,” he said. “I think re-election says something. When you’re re-elected it means the community trusts you, so I’m thrilled.” He added he has two priorities when the board reconvenes. “First, is to ensure that everything coming down from the state – the common core curriculum and the local control funding formula – is implemented and handled correctly. The second is that we have to look for new sources of funding.”

Scott said that while he battled through a tough campaign, it was worth it. “This has been a really focused effort for the last for months,” he said. “Sometimes nice guys finish last. But people looked at the challenges coming ahead and they got it right. We just went on and walked and knocked and talked one vote at a time and it worked.” IN OTHER ELECTION NEWS: In a surprisingly highly contentious battle for control of the San Gabriel County Water Board of Directors, Eric Chan, Sabino Cici and Charles De La Torre were elected to the board defeating Harry Baldwin, Piper Fogle and Jo Ann Angela Lewy. Chan received 20.06 percent of the vote, Cici got

17.22 percent of the vote and De La Torre garnered 17.02 percent of the vote. Toma got 19.43 percent of the vote, Warshaw received 13.89 percent of the vote, while Johnson got 12.28 percent of the vote. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas where officers have responded to frequent collisions and cracking down on driving and pedestrian violations that cause collisions, injuries and fatalities. Motorist failing to yield to pedestrians and those walking into traffic are a serious safety concern that puts everyone on the road at risk. In the most recent release of data for 2010, 578 have been killed and 11,429 seriously injured in California as a result

of collisions that involved pedestrians. In Monterey Park officers have investigated 44 pedestrian involved fatal or injury collisions. Drivers and pedestrians who break the law and place themselves and others in danger will be cited. Officers will focus efforts in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, especially at intersections and streets where speed related collision are high. Officers will pay particular attention towards distracted driving such as those using hand held cell phones or texting. Officers remind motorist to slow down and obey posted speed limits, signs and signals, to stay alert and always give pedestrians the right-of-way. Those on foot should always use crosswalks, never walk into traffic, use sidewalks, or walk

facing traffic where there are no sidewalks. If you are walking in crosswalks, always watch for motorist who may not see you. Expect the unexpected while crossing the street. To avoid a distracted driving ticket or crash, Monterey Park PD offers drivers the following tips: • Turn off your phone and/or put it out of reach while driving • Include in your outgoing message that you can’t answer while you are driving • Don’t call or text anyone at a time when you think they may be driving. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

2013 Ovation Awards celebrated at the San Gabriel Playhouse

and one for “The Royale.” CTG was followed by 3-D theatricals, The Chance Theater, La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, Circle X Theatre Company, the Fountain Theatre, and the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts took home the coveted Best Season award. Additionally, the Biller BEST (Building Excellence in Small Theatre) Awards, which included checks totaling $100,000, were presented to six theater companies: the Antaeus Company, The Blank Theatre, Deaf West Theatre, East West Players, The Theatre @ Boston Court, and Theatre Banshee.

CTG presented its Sherwood Award to Miranda Wright. This award was established in 1996 in memory of Richard E. Sherwood, a lover of the arts who was actively involved with the CTG Board for over 25 years, and is presented to innovative and adventurous theater artists, like Wright, who received $10,000 that will help further her artistic work. For 24 years, the LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards have been the only peer-judged theater awards in Los Angeles. Voters are local theater professionals who are chosen each year by the Ovation Awards Rules Committee. “The Ovation Awards highlight the world class artistry happening each night on Los Angeles' stages. This annual celebration brings together our diverse community to acknowledge not only the very best in design, performance and production, but also to unite our theatre-rich region and many of our numerous theatre families. We hope that the recognition of an Ovation Award serves as a catalyst to ever higher artistic achievement and future employment for our theatre professionals,” said Terence McFarland, CEO of LA STAGE Alliance.

Actor Steven Weber was one of the award presenters.

The 24th Annual LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards were presented Sunday, November 3, at the historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. The event celebrated the hundreds of theater productions and the thousands of talented artists who were involved in the Los Angeles 2013 theater season. The gorgeous venue was the perfect place for this joyful evening, hosted by actor, comedian, and musician Michael McKean. The line-up of celebrity presenters included Ed Begley Jr., Val Kilmer, Wendie Malick, and Steven Weber. Present were also Mayor of the City of San Gabriel Juli Costanzo, City Manager of La Mirada Jeff Boynton, and other government officials. The hundreds of local performers, managers, and other artistic personnel that attended the occasion were further delighted by the eclectic sound of the David O and String Theory band. Thirteen theater companies received thirty-five awards, with the Center Theatre Group (CTG) on top with seven awards for “The Nether,” three for “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” one for “the Scottsboro Boys,”

Richie Sambora performs at Breeders’ Cup Saturday -Photos by Terry Miller which Stevens raised his whip in celebration as he and Mucho Macho Man crossed the finish line. “. . . When Gary waved the stick, I figured he won . . . He is a good horse.” The positive trickledown effect from the Classic was evident in other aspects of the Media Poll. Mucho Macho Man was also named Outstanding Older Horse, while the Classic was named Race of the Meet. Reeves Thoroughbred Racing also was voted Outstanding Owner, having earned $2,900,000 thanks to Mucho Macho Man’s two rich victories. Other excitement, off the track, included Toni Braxton signing the National anthem and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora doing a rather short guitar solo/ call to post… which left everybody wanting more. For the first time ever, the “Call to Post” was performed not by the traditional bugle played by Santa Anita legend Jay Cohen, but on a custom Fender Stratocaster guitar played by American rock icon Richie Sambora. Additionally, Grammy Award winner Toni Braxton performed the National Anthem, while acclaimed

actress and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth performed the Breeders’ Cup adopted anthem, “The Best is Yet to Come,” sung by Tony Bennett last year. Sambora has been a member of Bon Jovi since before their 1983 debut, playing lead guitar on every record, co-writing most of the band's songs, and helping them sell more than 135m albums. He has also released three solo LPs, most recently 2012's Aftermath of the Lowdown, which reached No 35 in the UK. Toni Michelle Braxton is an American R&B singer-songwriter, pianist, musician, record producer, actress, television personality, and philanthropist. Braxton has won 6 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, and 9 Billboard Music Awards. She has sold over 66 million records worldwide. Fans dressed ready for Ascot included Zulay Quiroz Jessica Viana and Catherine Gribben who sported some of their favorite hats as they watched the races from a VIP area. At the Breeders’ Cup there was a veritable A list of classic award winning Hall of Fame jockeys who came to see the new rid-

ers. One such was Chris McCarron. Christopher John "Chris" McCarron is a retired American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey. He was introduced to the sport of thoroughbred racing by his older brother, jockey Gregg McCarron. Nikon Professional Services was also on hand to help photographers (who shoot with Nikon) with equipment loans and minor repairs during the two-day event. Sara of Nikon was a great help in loaning Beacon Media and other agencies some first class equipment. The only problem for most racing fans was actually leaving Santa Anita Park after the Classic Race on Saturday night. To say it was difficult and time consuming would be an understatement. Last year was bad, but this year was much worse. There were literally thousands of cars trying to exit a few openings onto local streets. Angry drivers attempted to break down several blockades on the east side of the track near Methodist Hospital. For some reason, known only to officials at Breeders, there were hardly any exits open to let traffic out of Santa Anita. Bad planning , indeed. Fights broke out with some belligerent drivers who didn’t want to get stuck in traffic all night and eventually, after considerable pleading with one guard who was allowing only limousines through “because they paid and extra $40 for the privilege,” an opening was made available for those of us not driving limousines. For most drivers I spoke with they had been waiting in excess of 60 minutes trying to leave the track.

PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

liance Program PAP Comp

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
