LA County News Los Angeles County Announces First Death Related to 2019 Novel Coronavirus The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed the first death from 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The individual (a non-resident visiting friends) was an older adult who traveled extensively over the past month, including a long layover in South Korea. Public Health is also reporting six additional positive cases, one of which is presumed to be the second case of community transmission. Long Beach News CSULB Will Remain Open As It Suspends Classes While there are no cases of COVID-19 related to the Cal State University Long Beach (CSULB) campus, as a preventative measure the school is temporarily suspending the in-person, on-campus convening of classes. To allow faculty to make final preparations for alternative delivery of instruction, faceto-face classes are canceled from Thursday, March 12 through Tuesday, March 17, although the campus will remain open. Alternative instruction will begin on Wednesday, March 18. Online classes will continue as scheduled. The campus is not closing. High School Students Can Apply for a Summer Internship at City of Hope The Hilton Foundation and City of Hope present a research-intensive threeweek laboratory internship for high school juniors and seniors ages 16 and over. This internship is for students who are interested in gaining hands-on laboratory experience, while exploring concepts such as the pathophysiology of heart disease, the implications of food deserts, and the differences between GMO, organic, and conventionally grown foods. During the final week of the program, students will be asked to present information from a literature search on a science and nutrition related topic of their choice, which they will present on the last day of the program. City of West Covina Hosts Easter Eggstravaganza The City of West Covina and West Covina Kiwanis expect hundreds of children and their families to turn out for the annual egg hunt festivities on Saturday, April 4, 2020. This year’s Easter Eggstravaganza will be held at Cortez Park, 2441 East Cortez Street, West Covina from 9–11:30 a.m. The Easter Eggstravaganza is a free event featuring egg hunts for children of all ages.

ORANGE Orange County News UC Irvine Transitions to Online Classes; Two More Cases of Coronavirus Found in Orange County In an effort to keep students safe and healthy, the University of California Irvine will be cancelling inperson courses as of Tuesday March 10. They informed professors to hold final exams and teach coursework remotely. The director of the Orange County Health Care Agency, Richard Sanchez announced two “presumptive” positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19). There are five known cases of the virus, three are to be determined and two are positive. UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman said in a statement that all classes will be held online and events with more than 100 people in attendance will be cancelled. Anaheim News

Disneyland in Anaheim Increases Stricter Sanitation Procedures While three Asian Disney amusement parks have shut down, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim has revved up its hygiene procedures. In order to protect its visitors from contracting or spreading any illnesses, the par has placed more hand sanitizing stations throughout the park. Staff is trained in sanitizing and good hygiene. Other protocols in pace are defined cycles for frequent cleaning and disinfection of targeted areas, end-of-day sanitation procedures for facilities and frequent cleaning and “wash down” of outdoor locations, including walkways and queues.

San Bernardino County News San Bernardino County Declares Health Emergency The San Bernardino County Public Health Officer and the Board of Supervisors declared a local health emergency due to concerns of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The declaration is to keep government officials and residents prepared in case the virus were to appear locally. Cases have been identified in the Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange counties. City of San Bernardino News San Bernardino Conference Helps Motivate Middle School Girls The Young Women’s Empowerment Foundation is hosting a Spring Girl Talk Conference, an event open to 150 girl from the Inland Empire. Ontario News Legislators Argue for Rail Access to Ontario Airport Two state legislators push to extend the Gold Line rail from the San Gabriel Valley into the Ontario International Airport. State Sen. Anthony Portantino and Assemblyman Chris Holden prepared legislation that would create construction authorities to do the work to extend the rail. San Bernardino County Transportation Authority opposed both bills.
