Where Does Your Loyalty Lie?

Angela COPELAND,

angela@copelandcoaching.com L oyalty is an interesting idea. Companies expect it. Many demand it. You must be a loyal employee. You must put the company's best interest first. Even if you don't agree, you should toe the company line. Otherwise, your worst fears could happen; you may find yourself without work.

What I find interesting however is this. In the past, companies offered loyalty in return. They provided pensions and security. You could work at one company for thirty years and then retire comfortably. You could even work your way up the company ladder. It was reliable. Unfortunately, companies are no longer able to provide the same level of loyalty to employees. Or, perhaps they choose not to. Whether it's a more competitive market or different expectations, retiring from one company is much less likely today than it was 40 years ago.

But, despite the market changes on the company side, most employers still expect the same level of loyalty from you. Now, don’t get me wrong. I'm not talking about honesty and integrity. Of course, we should all be honest. Every day, we should do our best work.

Many companies expect you to stick around through thick and thin. They expect you not to look for a new job; not to return the phone calls from recruiters. Honestly,

– Companies expect loyalty from their employees, but lack to provide that loyalty in return. Who should you prioritize, yourself or the company? – Courtesy photo

it seems that because most jobs are considered “at will” and you can be fired anytime, loyalty is expected in exchange for a job now. But, next week, next month, and next year aren't guaranteed. So where should your loyalty lie? I would argue that it should lie within ourselves. In today's job market, you're the CEO of your own career. Think of yourself as a small business or a consultant. You are in the driver's seat. You have to be. It's your job to build your resume over time. It's your job to seek promotions. And, it's your job to be sure your training is up to date. With all that said, it's also your job to protect your reputation by showing up each day — by doing your best and by being honest.

You cannot simply turn over your loyalty to a company. Much like a romantic relationship, loyalty must be earned over time. You cannot blindly give up your power. You cannot assume you'll be taken care of.

If you think of yourself as a small business, you'll be off to the right start. Your employer is like your client. Do the best work for them each and every day. In exchange, they'll compensate you. But, like a small business, you never know when that client will decide to move in a new direction. So, you have to be ready. Small businesses are always looking for their next client. They're networking. They're setting up a situation where they are not dependent on any one revenue stream.

Do your best today, but be loyal to your future vision.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale

According to industry experts, there are several physical problems that will come under scrutiny during inspection when your home is for sale. READERS RESPOND TO: ‘NAACP CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED VIOLATION OF DUE PROCESS FOR FIRE CHIEF WASHINGTON’

Dear Editor: As a local Pasadena business owner, I have known City Manager Steve Mermel for many years. He is a man of high ethics and integrity. Politicizing based on race the reassignment of Chief [Bertel] Washington before the facts are know is irresponsible. I urge council members engaged in this type of public comment to cease and desist until they can be briefed on the background of this change either in an executive session of the City Council or privately. As an employer myself for several decades, there are specific legal guidelines that govern what an employer can disclose about any employee’s medical or job performance issues. Looking at the generous salaries and pensions that has become harder and harder for the city to afford that are granted to public employees like Washington, I can’t say that I’m going to shed any tears for these public employees. We lost a great police chief, Phil Sanchez, because one of his colleagues was selling guns out of his house in Altadena. We have many more pressing challenges for our City Council like the behavioral problems that some of our youth are developing due to the permissive use of cell phones and other computer devices used in the private and public school system.

-William M. PASADENA

Dear Editor: I had one thought that Now News hasn’t published and that is the possibility that the now acting fire chief plans to retire soon and would like a higher pension benefit if he were chief. So he takes the job, the real chief takes another position with the city manager’s office for an unknown assignment keeping his present pay. Time goes by and the acting chief retires and the assignment for the real chief is over and he goes back to his old job. Now there is some fuss, but could there be truth to my comment?

-Richard L. PASADENA

READER RESPONDS TO: ‘MONROVIA GROUPS HOSTING WOMEN’S …’

Despite their progressive ideals, it was our Founding Fathers who decreed that women’s place in the new nation must follow patriarchal Judeo-Christian principles which, for thousands of years, had remained unchallenged.

For example, the 10th Commandment makes it clear that a man’s wife is his possession – and when has a possession ever had the right to vote? So, of course it followed that for the next 143 years, legislators denied women that right. Finally, in 1920, by reason of their constant struggles, the 19th Amendment, which gave women their voting rights, became law.

Another example: St. Paul, the most revered man in Christendom (after Jesus of course) had this to say about women in 1Timothy 2:11-15:

“I give no permission for a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. A woman ought to be quiet. It was the woman who fell into sin. Nevertheless, she will be saved by childbearing.”

Do St. Paul’s words, even now, encourage men to respect women, or to hold them as equals? Certainly not! According to that great apostle, women’s duty in life is to sit down and shut up – and let the man, her master, does all the thinking and make all the decisions.

It’s shocking, really, how far women have strayed from the righteous path that God ordered them to follow. Instead, they have joined the ranks of men as doctors, lawyers and professors, and have found success in all professions.

Who gave those inferior creatures the audacity to defy God’s instructions anyway? Satan? So now it’s time for all God-fearing men to put women in their place – in the home where they belong, and bearing children so that they can be saved.
