Dr. Kenneth canzoneri, D.D.S.

Q:

Dear Dr. KC: A few weeks ago I had a few of my high school girl friends over for an overnight get-together. A couple of the girls did not bring their toothbrush so I let one of them use my toothbrush. I rinsed the toothbrush with water so I did not think it was a big deal. My mom was totally grossed out. Sharing a toothbrush may sound harmless but it comes with a lot of risks. Some of those risks could even kill you. Brushing your teeth is one of the most effective habits to get rid of plaque and gum disease. Your mouth is home to more than 700 species of bacteria. Yes, using someone else’s toothbrush can transfer these bacteria to another person’s mouth. Not all these 700 bacteria are harmful but a few can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, infection and illness. Other creatures that can be spread sharing a toothbrush are viruses, the common cold, strep throat, herpes, the flu, pneumonia, and even human papillomavirus (HPV). Am I grossing you out yet? I can do even better. Another person’s mouth can have bleeding gums, food particles, fungi such as yeast infections and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is what causes many people to

lose their teeth and it can be transferred on a toothbrush. Periodontal disease is not just a problem that’s limited to the mouth. Periodontal disease can affect the whole body. Let’s say you are stranded in the middle of nowhere. No CVS, hotel, of AM/PM minimart and no toothbrush. Using your finger or a washcloth is

a better alternative than borrowing your friend’s toothbrush. Sharing a toothbrush is actually dangerous! Dr. Kenneth Canzoneri maintains a private family practice in Arcadia, CA. When I read that “while in concentration camp, the Tsuneishi’s had four sons serving in World War II, as well as two daughters who served as civilian translators,” it reminded me of a visit I made to the Manzanar relocation center (a euphemism for that concentration camp for Japanese civilians). At the visitors’ center, a newsreel featured a speech by President Ronald Reagan in which he said that “mistakes were made,” in reference to the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans. Mistakes?? Mistakes are made when someone makes a wrong turn or misspells a word. Herding thousands of law-abiding citizens behind barbed wire, under the watchful eye of armed guards, was not a mistake. It was a miscarriage of justice of epic proportions, which should forever be recognized as a crime in our history. What a pity that the “great communicator” couldn’t communicate such a selfevident truth. - David Q. MONROVIA

Reader Shares: ‘Local And Relevant News,’ It Is Not Until recently, you say Arcadia Weekly is “Arcadia Specific News,” that [it] is “Local, Relevant and Trusted.” On May 2nd, you wasted the valuable front page on Adam Schiff. Then on May 9th, you

blow your “opinion horn” on the free press, followed by May 16th, where you devote the front page to old news of a “few years ago,” and old news about a school attack from 2017 in Georgia. None of this is relevant local news. What are you thinking? Or maybe more important, where are you trying to take this “local newspaper”? Indeed, very sad. - Jeff B. ARCADIA EDITOR’S NOTE: Thank you for taking the time to write to us, Mr. Bowen. We value input from our readers and take seriously your concerns and wishes for local, relevant news. Unfortunately, the newspaper business has suffered considerable setbacks and staff reductions in recent years, thanks in no small part due to social media and giant tech companies like Google. These megaliths overshadow traditional news sources and subsequently take the lion’s share of the advertising business which was customarily placed in print media. We strive to keep up

with the ever-changing digital climate by directing readers to our website(s) where there is far more space to run the local stories you mention. Our print products had to consolidate as a result of declining advertising revenue that newspapers the world over are experiencing. The stories you mention on page one in the past three weeks were well-researched and important issues. The school shooting story you mentioned was indeed out of state but nonetheless relevant as a sidebar to the story on how local school districts deal with school violence. The two teens who were sentenced to 40-years prison time, hopefully sends a strong message to those who might be so misguided as to consider such a heinous crime. Our “opinion horn” is an important part of freedom of the press which is exactly what the May 9 issue was all about. Finally, the article on Adam Schiff, who is a local Congressman with very strong ties to the San Gabriel Valley, was extremely relevant considering the political climate surrounding the Mueller Report and the potential for a presidential run.
