Muir takes Arcadia to the cleaners By SHEL SEGAL The Arcadia High boys’ basketball team opened the second half on the wrong end of a 15-5 run and fell to host Muir High, 59-41, on Tuesday night in the CIF Southern Section Pacific League opener. Trailing, 30-26, at halftime, the Apaches cut the lead to two points on a field goal by Brandon Hardy. However, led by the hot shooting of Dejon William and Andrew Lopez, the Mustangs took over and led at the end of the third quarter, 49-26. Arcadia coach Ben Cordeiro said while his team played well the result was exactly what they wanted. “Our effort was there,” Cordeiro said. “We played hard. I’m proud of our guys. The first half our shots were falling. The second half we needed to take better shots. They weren’t as good as they were in the first.” He added the Apach-

es gave all they had and will continue to do so all season. “Today we played hard,” he said. “We played with passion and with energy. I told our guys that’s what we bring to every game. We just got to keep moving forward. We just have to keep taking them one game at a time and work hard.” The Apaches opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run, but watched as the Mustangs reeled off 10 straight points to seal the game. Daren Sue led the Apaches with 10 points. He also hit a half-court shot to end the first half. Hardy pitched in eight. William scored a game-high 12 points, while teammates Harris-Austin Desmond and Daniel Harris had eight points each. Muir coach Simaine Stewart said his team is getting better every time it goes out on the court.

“We look better, but we’re a work in progress,” Stewart said. “We’re a work in progress. We had a couple of guys who transferred in. We had a couple of kids from (junior varsity) who have come up. But it’s a work in progress. Everyday we’re just trying to get a little bit better. We’re not really there yet.” He added the Mustangs are up against steady competition this season. “It’s a tough league,” he said. “Hoover is playing great this year. Pasadena, (Crescenta Valley) and Muir have been the guys the past few years. But now we’re at the bottom. Arcadia, Hoover and Burroughs, they’re the ones at the top. It’s a challenge for us this year. It’s good for everybody. It’s good for the kids.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com. Follow him via Twitter @segallanded.)

'Never on a Sunny Day' Continued from page 1

broadcast I’ve ever heard while omitting the some of the more “uncomfortable” issues dealing with the SeaWorld float and PETA’s widely promoted objection to the float due to the assertion that SeaWorld mistreats Orcas. Most of the major networks simply turned their cameras away from the gay marriage of Aubrey Loots and Danny Leclair which took place atop a float devoted to HIV awareness: For the third year in a row, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization, will took part in the Rose Parade. Following a United States Supreme Court ruling in June that allowed samesex marriages to resume in California, AHF’s float this year celebrated same-sex marriage and the role it can play in helping to reduce new HIV infections among gay men. As part of its ‘Love is the Best Protection’ theme, AHF’s float included what is believed to be a first: a same-sex wedding performed live during the parade. In 2013, the Rose

Parade attracted approximately 700,000 attendees, aired live nationally on eight networks to 56 million viewers, and was televised in 174 countries for an additional 28 million international viewers. However, this was left out of most TV coverage. While we understand the TOR is an old institution in Pasadena, the fact that they are becoming more progressive should inspire the conservative television stations covering the parade to follow their fine example. Fear of losing advertisers/sponsors creates out of touch producers who tell us what we ‘need to know’ and not what is happening. Some will argue that it is a “family” event and controversy should be kept out. Hogwash! The younger generation needs to know what struggle is for human beings and the ever strong battle for animal rights. We should praise those who take a stand against injustice and bigotry like we did in the 1960’s. In one video clip we saw on YouTube, one can people blasting those ar-

rested with comments like “ Orca go home…” and then applauding the LASD and Pasadena PD for arresting the protesters who are simply trying to enlighten the world about some seriously alarming practices in a certain theme park in San Diego. We should be praising the courage of PETA and the AIDs Healthcare Foundation for enlightening an otherwise extremely conservative, intolerant populous. Perhaps we must all take note of the new papal policy….as Pope Francis says “ Who Am I to judge…?”If the Catholic Church is becoming tolerant, should not those in charge of television coverage do same. The Tournament of Roses has a dictum that says “ Never on a Sunday” meaning if Jan 1 falls on a Sunday, the parade will be held on the following day so as to not interrupt local worship. This year, however, Jan. 1 wasn’t on a Sunday but fell on an extremely sunny California Wednesday. Yet, the dark cloud of censorship fell on an otherwise sunny day in Pasadena.
