Christmas and New Years, SMRFA needs lots of volunteers and needs you to get involved. New this year you can schedule your shifts online! Visit the SMRFA website www.smrosefloat.org to sign up and plan that week between Christmas and New Year’s. Shifts run December 26-December 31 between 9am - 10pm (and sometimes go even later), so there should be something for everyone. SMRFA is also looking for people to help with a number of things that don't include flowers or seeds! Volunteers are needed to help with food for volunteers

(grilling burgers at lunch, serving and clean-up for lunch and dinner), help with the sales booth selling t-shirts, pins and postcards to community supporters, picking up supplies, cleaning up after the float moves out on the 31st, float-sitting overnight on January 2nd when the float comes home to Kersting Court and selling excess flowers on January 3. It takes a village to produce a beautiful Rose Parade float which is why the City of Sierra Madre has been so successful for so many years. If those volunteer opportunities are not enough, SMRFA is also looking for donations of some key sup-

plies including working blenders and non-steam irons, which help us prepare the floral materials. Or do you have an RV that could sleep 6 on New Year's Eve? The SMRFA float crew needs a place to sleep while parked on the parade route and would be grateful for a one-night loan. If you can help with any of these items or if you have further questions, please contact Bonnie, the SMRFA Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteers@smrosefloat.org or leave a message at the float barn (626-355-7005) and include your name, phone number and how you would like to get involved.

Bertram Mak and Justin Saisho scored 17 points apiece as the Mark Keppel boys’ basketball team defeated Marina High, 69-57, in the La Canada Tournament at La Canada High on Tuesday. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 5-1 in nonleague play. Bertram said the team had an easy game plan to follow. “We just needed to ‘dup’ and hit our shots,” Bertram said. Aztecs coach Hung Duong said his team is solid when it has the ball. “Today, we were able to hit shots,” Duong said. “We’re hitting a lot more threes than we usually do. We were a little bit rusty on our defense. Defensively, we’re not where we need to be. We

By SHEL SEGAL need to be better on the defensive end.” But he said his team needs to improve when it doesn’t have the ball. “We need to work on a lot of stuff,” Duong said. “We always need to work on things. Right now we need to work on our outside-d and our on-ball-d. We just need to work on our defensive end. If we can shore that up I think we will be a little bit tougher.” Improving on defense is easier said than done, Duong added. “For us, we’re stronger on offense,” he said. “Our defense is behind. We can score. It’s just on the defensive end we got to get that attitude. We’re giving up too many easy buckets, too many easy lay ups. We got some shooters this year. It comes

and goes. Luckily, we hit some shots.” Up, 5-4, midway through the first quarter, Keppel went on a 14-2 run that featured two three-point baskets by Saisho and led after the first quarter, 19-10. The Vikings kept pace in the second quarter, hitting four straight three-point shots to end the frame, and trailed the Aztecs at halftime, 38-28. Noah Muronaka got a hot shooting hand in the third quarter, scoring seven points in the frame, as the Aztecs pulled out to a 59-44 lead. The shooting of Saisho and his three fourth quarter three-point shots sealed the victory for Keppel. (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com. Follow him via Twitter @segallanded.)

Arcadia High’s hoops fall to St. Francis The Arcadia High basketball team met some tough competition in St. Francis High and fell, 69-50, on Tuesday in the La Canada Tournament at La Canada High. Kade Cheung scored 11 points and Aaron Harvey scored nine points in the losing effort. Arcadia coach Ben Cordeiro said the team wasn’t playing at 100 percent as Joseph Leonard was out of the line-up. “We’re not a big team and today we were missing one of our forwards – he was out sick,” Cordeiro said. “We really missed him today. When he’s out someone needs to step up. We need to be scrappy and play hard.” Cordeiro added his team needs to do better offensively. “Sometimes our shot selection isn’t the best,” he

said. “We need to get better at selecting when to shoot threes and when to drive to the basket.” He also said the team has had its challenges so far this season. “We’ve been up and down,” Cordeiro said. “We have a lot of inexperience, as far as varsity experience goes. We’ve played well, but we’ve been up and down.” Cheung said after the loss the Apaches need to do more practicing. “Our press was good and I felt we moved the ball fairly well,” Cheung said. “But I feel we need to work on rebounding. I feel we sort of got pushed around a little bit. We’ll be better next game. We just need to work on rebounding, fundamentals, just do the basics.” Arcadia fell behind ear-

ly as St. Francis, started the game on a 10-3 run and led at the end of the first quarter, 1811. Trailing, 22-11, with seven minutes left in the second quarter, the Apaches turned it on, going on a 12-4 run behind the shooting of Cheung and Harvey, cutting the lead to 26-23 midway through the second quarter. However, the Golden Knights ended the quarter on a 13-0 run and led Arcadia at halftime, 39-23, outscoring the Apaches, 21-12, in that frame. St. Francis opened the third quarter with three field goals to take a game-high 22-point lead, 45-23. The Golden Knights sealed the victory by outscoring the Apaches, 18-15, in the fourth quarter.
