Duarte resident receives unwanted, intoxicated guest The City of Duarte and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's report an unusual break-in in the Chimes or Area 6 of Duarte. On Friday, November 8, 2013 on the 1000 Block of Bradbourne Avenue at approximately 12:20 a.m., a resident was watching television on his living room couch and got up to use the restroom. Moments later when he returned, an unknown male 170 lbs., 5’7”- 5”10” in height, unknown ethnicity, was in the same spot on the couch he had just left. The suspect saw the resident and stumbled out of the sliding glass door he had used to enter. The victim reports that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance or alcohol due to his lack of coordination. The suspect was later seen walking eastbound on Royal Oaks Drive from Bradbourne
Avenue towards the Royal Oaks Trail. Nothing was damaged or stolen. If you spotted suspicious persons, vehicles, and/or any unusual activity in the area, or If you have any information that can assist in the investigation of this crime , please contact Special Assignment Deputy Goodrich at the Duarte Sub Station by calling (626) 357-7938, ext. 320. Temple Station recently reported that the City of Duarte had a 29% percent drop in Part 1 Crimes as of August 2013, as compared to last year. Temple Station Captain Christopher Nee said our city experienced one of the most significant decreases in major crimes compared to the station’s other five contract cities (including Temple City, Rosemead, South El Monte, and Bradbury). A 43% decrease in home burglaries in only
two years tells experts that current crime prevention efforts are working. However, as 2013 comes to an end. we still need your help to help catch more criminals and continue to be one of the safest cities in the valley. Car thefts and burglaries continue to be an issue. Always lock your car and home and use an alarm system if available. Never leave valuables in your vehicle, even if they are not in plain view. Remember, some burglaries can be prevented but, if a burglar wants to get in your car, they will smash a window and grab what they can get get. Make it difficult and not worth their while by not leaving anything of value in your car. Visit our site for the Year to Date Property Crime Snapshot at http:// www.accessduarte.com/index.php

More than 100 years of Service above Self By Susan Motander At a special meeting on Tuesday November 5, Monrovia Rotary honored two of their two most senior members: Detro Sells and Herb Hezlep. Each was given a special award for their dedication not only to Rotary, but more for their dedication to the Monrovia community at large. One of the tenants of Rotary is Service Above Self. Combined , Sells and Hezlep have more than 100 years of Service to this community. Sells joined the Monrovia Rotary Club in 1962, and was its president in the 1982-3 term. He was also the President of the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce in 1976 and also served as Chairman of the Monrovia Merchants Association. In those days, women were not members of Rotary, but the wives of Rotarians were known as Rotary Anns. Bliss was one of the most active Rotary Anns. She organized blood drives for the Red Cross as well as bake sales and numerous club events. Detro married his wife Bliss in 1941 in Indiana. After serving in the Marine Corp in World War II (he expert marksman he was assigned as part of the defense of Admiral Nimitz headquarters), he returned to Bliss and Indiana. Selling their home and furnishings, they bought a 1947 Pontiac and trailer and moved to Southern California. The duo came to Monrovia in 1949 when Detro began to work for Neil Hunter, a Monrovia Rotarian who owned a furniture store in town. Eventually, Detro began a partner in

the firm, and when Hunter retired in 1960, he and Bliss opened Sells Furniture on Myrtle Avenue. Two years later, his former boss, Hunter, sponsored his membership in the Rotary club. The Sells have four daughters, Georgian Jean, twins Sandra Leigh and Susan Marie, and Lana Fail. In addition they have countless grandchildren and great grandchildren. (In the interest of truth in the news media, I admit that I was in 1st grade with Sandra and Susan). Herb Hezlep has been with the Monrovia Rotary Club even longer than Sells. Hezlep came to Rotary in 1958 through his father. He started to work at his father's hardware manufacturing company, Acme General Corp., in 1950. At that time the company was small. Based in Monrovia, it later expanded to Canada and Europe. Hezlep served as the company's executive vice president, president, and chairman of the board before retiring in 1988. He served as Monrovia’s Rotary Club President in th3 1964-5 term. He was also the Rotary Districts’s Group Study Exchange
Chair in 1967-8 and the District Conference Chair in 1973. For many years he and his wife have been active supporters of the Group Exchange program and he considers it his favorite Rotary Foundation program. In addition to his Rotary activities, Hezelp has been the president and a board member of the Santa Anita YMCA and a board member of the Huntington Medical Research Institutes in Pasadena. Hezlep has been married to his wife Elizabeth for over 57 years and have four children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Liz was the society editor for a local newspaper (not this one) and remains active with the Luminaires of the Doheny Eye Institute. Together they support the Rotary Foundation through the Herb Hezlep Endowed Fund. Rotary President and Monrovia City Councilman Alexander Blackburn commented at the celebration of the commitment of these two long term Rotarians, it was their sort of dedication, which gave a certain credibility to being a Rotarian, especially in Monrovia.
