The Social Whirl Methodist Hospital Foundation's Crystal Ball sizzles It Dazzled and Delighted the over 900 guests who brought in over $515,000, for Cardiac Services. With the winning combination of the glamorous Christine Antonovich and the handsome Dr. K. Heiner Vogelbach as co-chairs, and Honorees John and Jane Wuo, it was no surprise to those of us who have seen them in action over the years. The excitement stared with a buzz of the Wow factor as guests walked into the dining room decked out with a 1930’s feeling of décor. Beautiful large white plumes flowing from 3 foot high silver vases, alternating with shades of coral colored roses which graced each table. The food has always been gourmet and this year was no exception. Many presentations were made along with an auction which took place. The highlight of the extravagant evening was Mr. Smokey Robinson along with his backup singers and dancers who put on a marvelous show. The record-breaking number of grand sponsors totaling eight were:

Pio Pico Carolyn Schoff, President of the Friends of Pio Pico and President of the California League of Park Associations will be the guest speaker at the next Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage Lunchtime Talk on Thursday, November 21 at noon. This will be the last Lunchtime Talk until January so don’t miss out! Lunchtime Talks take place the third Thursday of the month at the Arcadia
Recreation and Community Center and are always free. It is an enjoyable way to spend an hour learning about snippets or Arcadia history, people, places, and events. The Community Center’s Carefree Café (for adults 50 years and older) offers lunches for purchase on the day of the program on a first come, first served basis. Tea and games at Sierra Madre Woman's Club - November 9th Sierra Madre Woman’s Club will host an afternoon tea with bridge or a game of your choice on Saturday, November 9th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Essick House, their historic clubhouse. The clubhouse is located at 550 W. Sierra

Faces at the Races: Photography of Stephen Johnstone South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) announces its second annual juried exhibition, October 30November 30, 2013 at the So Pas Gallery Pasadena, 1121 Mission Street, South Pasadena, Ca. 91030. The Opening Reception will take place on Saturday, November 9, fro, 6-8 pm. This year’s juror is Joan Dooley. Joan is a fine art documentary photographer and art historian, whose style has been described as “decisive moment meets Jan Vermeer.” She is especially interested in exploring and capturing the “off” moments that reveal authentic emotions and narratives. Her photography has received a number of awards including a recent international annual “World in Focus” competition sponsored by the National Geographic. She has also
received many teaching awards including the Santa Fe Center’s annual Patron Saint of Photography as well as Otis and CalArts Teacher of the year. Before moving to LA, she studied Art, English and Art History. Her university studies focused on the relationship of the histories of photography and painting. For 12+ years she was Assistant Curator of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu working closely with the Getty’s world-class photo collection interpreting it for exhibition and publication. Since 1999, she has taught photography full-time in Los Angeles for various innercity public high schools and currently teaches at the Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology, a new public pilot high school in East Los Angeles. The juror selected
23 works by 15 artists in different media. Included in this year’s exhibition are: Michael Childs, Rebecca Tager, Joseph Stauffer Anita Janoyan, Lyle Everett Rushing, Laurie Brainerd, Chung-Ping Cheng, Brian Cho, Yvonne Hajdu-Cronin, Linda Queally, Cam Sanders, Domini0que Heffley, Cathy Perlmutter, Francis Woods, and Sarah Stone. In addition SPARC will host it second SPARC Lab on Friday, November 15th from 7-9 pm at the Gallery. We will facilitate a conversation with the juror and the exhibiting artists. Come and meet the artists and get an insight into their working process and their work. Admission to the opening reception is free. The SPARC Lab is free for members and $5 for the public.
