27th Annual ASID Pasadena Home & Kitchen Tour joins efforts to end homelessness in San Gabriel Valley A local group of interior designers is gearing up for the 27th year of their popular fall Pasadena Home & Kitchen Tour, “A Day of Great Design.” And for the first time in its history, leaders of the Pasadena Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers say they will donate a portion of the tour’s proceeds to help end homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley. Tickets will go on sale August 1st for this year’s event—to be held Sunday, October 6th-- featuring selfguided tours of professionally designed interiors of four spectacular homes in Pasadena, La Cañada and Arcadia. From warm contemporary to “green” upcountry, the public can see first-hand an eclectic selection of top-trend kitchens and other living spaces using state-of-the-art appliances and materials. Event organizers say these homes are “prime examples” of the excellent work by the member interior designers. But what makes this year special, they say, is that 10 percent of ticket proceeds will be donated to Union Station Homeless Services of Pasadena, to honor the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary of service to the homeless of the San Gabriel Valley. "By purchasing a ticket for our Home and Kitchen Tour, our attendees are contributing to solving the problem of homelessness in our own community,” said 2013 Tour Chair Marlene Oliphant. “Designers are in the business of creating dream homes for their clients, but it is also our dream that everyone has a place to call home. We hope to make a difference in many people’s lives." Ticket holders can meet and talk with the designers and see the latest in-home products from event sponsors and industry partners. Attendees can also shop unique boutiques selling gifts, clothing and

accessories and enjoy complementary pastries and coffee, courtesy of Bristol Farms. "We’ve been opening the doors of beautiful homes designed by our members to the public for more than a quarter of a century,” said Oliphant. “It’s easy to see the benefit of hiring one of our professional designers to create a home that suits the owner’s lifestyle and budget.” When: The 27th Annual ASID Pasadena Chapter Home & Kitchen Tour will be held Sunday, October 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Homes: La Cañada “Green” Up-country home, Eileen Atwood of Sierra Custom Kitchens, Inc. The Social Whirl GLAZA Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Study

Angel Bai (Arcadia), second from left, and Mary VanDyke (Pasadena), far right, both student volunteers at the Los Angeles Zoo, were among six youngsters and two adult mentors* who spent an extraordinary "summer vacation" conducting research in Thailand as part of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association's Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study program. Their unusual, life-changing experiences in late July included working alongside scientists at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), a Thai non-profit organization based in Chiang Rai. With Asian elephants in Thailand particularly endangered (approximately 1,500 left in captivity, 2,000 remaining in the wild in Thailand, and fewer than 50,000 throughout Asia), the scientists' goals to understand elephant behavior will result both to better understand the evolution of intelligence in non-primates, and to potentially develop human-elephant conflict mitigation protocols. The Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study is a hands-on scientific research program series funded for the last six years through the private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association by Linda Duttenhaver, whose philanthropy focuses on opportunities for students.
