The changing face of Arcadia

1800 children get a helping hand in preparation for new school year

From Super Chief to Gold Line

Oh the times they are a changin’ as Bob Dylan sang all those years ago. In reality the city of Arcadia is seemingly in the throes of several major projects that will alter the face of Arcadia as we have known it. The major construction for the Gold Line is perhaps Please see page 15

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday, Aug. 13, on a new fourstory medical office center being built by The Hale Corporation in a jointventure partnership with The Stronach Group, owner of Santa Anita Park horse race track. Congregation Ale House delicacies including their famous ale were served after the ceremonial groundbreaking. The Hale Corporation, based in Monrovia, has developed and built many medical buildings, including the Children’s Hospital on Santa Clara Avenue near Fifth Street in Arcadia, which opened in 2010.

Control District will conduct a truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) treatment to suppress populations of aggressive day-biting Asian tiger mosquitoes during the early morning hours of Thursday August 15th beginning at 12:00am (midnight) and continuing until approximately 5:00am. This treatment may be canceled or postponed to August 16, 2013 if weather conditions are not favorable. As the summer progresses, the Asian tiger

Dorothy's Place New words

By Dorothy Denne The Washington Post has a Mensa Invitational where they invite readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Let's have a little chuckle by sharing some of their winners: 1. Cashtration (n): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time. 2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole. 3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund,

which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. 4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 5. Bozone (n): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. 6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid. 7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high. 8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it. 9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late. 10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.) 11. Karmageddon: It's

like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer. 12. Decafalon (n): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. 13. Glibido: All talk and no action. 14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. 15. Arachnoleptic Fit (n): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web. 16. Beelzebug (n): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. 17. Caterpallor (n): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

The Sierra Madre water story For over thirty years, the people have been asking the City government to repair the leaky water mains. The big question is: "When is the City going to fix the water mains? How much water is wasted by the neglect? Who is to blame, and what should be done? In 2010, the City said that a raise in the water rates was needed by 7.5% and adopted 3 tiers of rates, in order to repair the water mains and to increase the reserves by $500,000. They raised the water rates depending on how much water was used by the people. They said that they wanted to encourage conservation. According to Bruce Inman, the Public Works Director, the cost of a unit of water is the same whether it is the first middle, or last unit used. The result is a penalty on those people that need more water. The City is the responsible party to furnish the water in the quantity that is needed by each and every property. The Mayor has stated

that she wanted to raise the rates by 15%, but she lost in the vote. When will the City Government accept the blame, and what should be done? When will the City take the blame for their own mistaks, and do something about it, and quit blaming the people as being wasteful? The City has not repaired or replaced any water mainsnor have they built up the reserves. They say they don't have any money to do what they said they would do with the money from the rate increases. What would you call the action? A lie to the people or just plain fraud? In any case, it is the mismanagement of our monies and the question arises, should the City Manager be fired and, if so, how many others should also be terminated? Out of an income of over $8M, the City cannot find any money to maintain the water system! They do have money to spend on a study, at a cost of $48,000, or more, to find out how much

to raise the water rates higher. They also have money to pay a lobbyist $5,000/mo., and money to send a number of City Council Members to visit our politicians in Washington, D.C. Note: They don't seem to be able to talk to our representatives at home. Now you hear the same story all over again and the City has scheduled a series of meetings and tours, to once again, try -to brain wash the people as to how bad the need is to have the people pay more for the same thing. What makes them think that the people will believe what they say they will do? Where is the guarantee that the money will be used for the purpose that they say? When will the government take the blame for their own mistakes and quit blaming the people as being wasteful? Enough is enough!! No more water rate increases without a vote by the people. An Honest Citizen, Sierra Madre Watchman

Dear Editor My name is Sheri Lochner and I have been following the discussion about water restrictions in Sierra Madre - and I want to add my two cents worth. I am a local girl - born and raised in Monrovia, where as you know the city has it's own water aquifer and water sources, such as wells. I have lived in Australia for the past 25 years and recently moved back to Monrovia to be with my mum. I lived in Fremantle, Western Australia and Kalgoorlie for many years before moving up to Darwin in the Northern Territory. While living in Western Australia, one of the driest places in Australia, there have been water restrictions for over 10 years. The water restrictions include: • no watering after 9am or before 6pm

• residents and business owners are only allowed to water using reticulation on designated days of the week - determined by the last digit of your street address; for example if your address ends in 3, you can water on Tues, Thurs & Sat • if you use a sprinkler it must be on a timer and for 10 minutes only • if you are caught violating these restrictions you will be fined - in fact, people are encouraged to report violators • water features are turned off • people are encouraged to use water-wise plants • in the City of Fremantle where I lived - the city provided residents with free mulch - along with picking up green waste (tree branches, prunings, etc.) twice per year. • in the City of Kalgoorlie - along with many other cities throughout Australia,

they use grey water to water golf courses and sport fields • all toilets, both private and public, have dual flushing • when the water restrictions were first introduced, various city councils provided incentives such as discounts on manual water timers (the ones you fit to your hose and manually turn on), some partnered with hardware stores to provide discounts on dual flushing toilets, soaker hoses, water wise washing machines and other devices Also, the majority of households dry their clothes on clothes lines - not in dryers and if they have dryers they are used only when the weather is too cold, wet or rainy. Since moving here, I have had seen very little evidence of consumers taking on their water and energy saving responsibilities. Sheri Lochner, Monrovia

Dear Editor: The article about “ Carlin” ( Published Aug 1 ) highlights the need to get your cats and dogs the necessary shots for their protection against diseases. Dogs need a fenced yard and a gate will keep them safely enclosed, and cats should live indoors for their own safety. Steve Hofstetter saved

the little dog from a painful slow death in the street. He took him to an animal shelter where he did not have to suffer any more and had some dignity. During the years I trapped, neutered and returned or placed feral and stray cats, they were always tested and received shots. I remember one kitten had a

bad case of flea anemia and my vet at Whiskers to Tails in Pasadena treated and saved him from a fatal condition. He was almost lifeless. Steve took the time to take care of little “Carlin” and he is a good example for anyone who claims to like animals. They’re voiceless and need us to help them. Suzanne Jarvis

driving westbound on Lime (east of Myrtle it is a two way street) or northbound on Myrtle turning left onto Lime. In panicking, the woman attempted to turn her vehicle onto Myrtle and instead the vehicle jumped the curb and slammed into the historic old landmark. The roof collapsed as city workers tried to preserve as much of the structure as possible. According to Director of Public Works, Ron Bow, the driver was insured and he believed the city would attempt to recover the cost of repairing the small structure. Daniele Tellez, Human Resources and Risk Management Division Manager said “ If there is anyway possible to recoup the costs, we will be doing that.” The woman who received some apparently minor injuries (abrasions and a bloody nose) was taken to the hospital. She was however issued a citation, which according to Hunt was mailed to her. The citation? It was for making a unsafe turn (You think?!?).

Last week Alexis Newell, Monrovia’s Public Information Officer, sent out a press release regarding a single vehicle traffic accident that resulted in damage to city property. This newspaper ran the information provided by the city P.I.O. Unfortunately, the public information officer was sadly misinformed. The small dressed granite block, tiled roof structure in Library Park housed a drinking fountain, not a wishing well as Newell wrote. The drinking fountain was donated to the city by the Monrovia Farmers Club. According to City Historian Steve Baker, this group met in the early part of the twentieth century to discuss issues facing agriculture. Police Chief Him Hunt said that according to the police report written at the time of the incident, a 64 year old Pasadena woman apparently panicked when she realized she was about to enter Lime Avenue, a one way street, going the wrong direction. It was unclear if she had been

My Name is Mattie concerns a 1910 murder that occurred in the eastern Washington town of

Pomeroy. After being sent to the Walla Walla Penitentiary, the townspeople rallied for a pardon from the Governor. This film was shot on Vashon, Pomeroy and Palouse WA. Jessika researched the story at several libraries and museums including the Washington State Archives where she read the original pardon document with the towns peoples’ signatures and held Mattie’s mug shot. It will screen on Tuesday, August 20th at 6pm. In addition to the film screenings, Jessika will lead a workshop, The Muse of Music, designed for actors,

directors and writers to increase emotional performance in pre-production and production phases. ‘Searching for Safe Ground' debuts at local film fest A new documentary revealing the homeless plight in America, "Searching For Safe Ground," debuts at this year’s Action On Film International Film Festival in Monrovia California on August 22nd. Similar to Steinbeck's "Grapes Of Wrath," the touching film "Searching For Safe Ground" directed by filmmaker Costa Mantis, chronicles the struggles of a small group of homeless people in Sacramento, California, who fight for their right for a place to sleep

while America and the rest of the world swirl in the strife of the new Great Recession. In “Searching For Safe Ground” you will meet these homeless people, citizens just like you and me - sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, families - who lost their jobs and homes and must try to rebuild their lives from backpacks, rolling carts and tents. "Searching For Safe Ground" challenges the homeless stereotypes and follows John, their leader,

as he guides this group of homeless citizens from the ruins of tent city into their battle for the fundamental right to protect and shelter themselves after losing their homes. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door." -Emma Lazarus 1883, engraved on the Statue of Liberty

County of LA disappointed with court of appeals decision on water quality The County of Los Angeles is disappointed with an opinion issued Thursday by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that holds the County and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District responsible for stormwater and urban runoff pollution. The opinion comes just seven months after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously reversed an earlier opinion by the Ninth Circuit in the same case, which was brought by the Natural Resources Defense Council

and Santa Monica Baykeeper against the County and the District. Gail Farber, Chief Engineer of the Flood Control District and Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, said the decision adopts an argument about stormwater monitoring that the court expressly rejected in two previous decisions in the same case by the same judges. “We view this as another legal skirmish in a case we thought had been re-

solved by the U.S. Supreme Court,” Farber said. “It is unfortunate that this case continues to divert public resources away from the work of improving water quality in the LA region.” “We will continue to work collaboratively with cities, regulatory agencies, and the environmental community to enhance water quality and protect our waterways,” she added. The District is considering its further options in light of Thursday’s decision.

Come play with ‘Tom Sawyer’ at Sierra Madre Playhouse

Host an International Student

By Fran Syverson

Ahh, childhood! Memories of our sweet (and sometimes devilish!) childhoods! And while most of us didn’t have childhoods to compare with Tom Sawyer’s, many of us do recall reading of his adventures and imagining ourselves right there with him and his sidekick, Huckleberry Finn. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” can be revisited when they come alive on the Sierra Madre Playhouse stage. It’s their light summer fare planned with earlier hours to entice “family-friendly” theatrical outings. Pre-curtain, musicians wander the foyer, entertaining patrons with homespun music. When the actors romp onto the stage, they bring the exuberance of youth and lively tunes played on a washboard, a bottle, fiddles, a harmonica and castanets. Straw hats, gingham skirts, jeans and suspenders, large hair ribbons—oh, we know we’re back in the 1840s of Mark Twain’s youth, all right! A certain suspension of credulity is required, since the actors are full-sized adults. Costumes and antics help us past that hurdle, and we can visualize them as the ‘tweenagers of the story. Those who have read the book will recognize incidents and characters—Tom’s and Becky’s first-love romance, whitewashing the fence (cleverly staged), Injun Joe, the murder seen by the boys, playing pirates, attending his own funeral, hunting for treasure, getting trapped in a dark cave….Doesn’t this just make you want to revisit Tom and all his adventures?? Youngsters who’ve not yet read the tale will enjoy the wit and drama in their first brush with Mark Twain’s fabulous

storytelling. The actors are consistently good, many of them playing two or three roles. Mike Rosenbaum conveys both Tom’s mischievous and good-hearted sides, his crush on Becky, and his growing conscience. Sierra CampbellUnsoeld as pretty Becky Thatcher travels with ease between being flirty and pouty with Tom. Huck as played by Jason Thomas is the ideal pal for Tom. Hank Doughan is lively as Joe Harper, the third young scalawag. Moreover, he’s the trial’s defense lawyer and the crime accomplice. Also carrying three diverse roles competently is Brandon Karrer as Injun Joe, the minister, and schoolmaster Dobins. Likewise, Cameron Miller as disagreeable stepbrother Sid, and both Doc Robinson and the prosecutor. Jeff Doba plays the hapless Muff Potter and also the widow’s brother. The Widow Douglas is Katie Hotchkiss and Tom’s Aunt Polly. We’re scarcely aware of Jennifer Zahlit’s violin music, so well does it set the mood and ambience. She is a background presence throughout the entire story, and also acts as a townsperson. Sometimes Jeff Doba joins in. Laura Eason adapted the play from Twain’s

book. Aaron Lyons directs the Playhouse production, for which Estelle Campbell and Christian Lebano are producers. Cody Clark is stage manager, with Annalise Lowery and Claire Shaffer assistants. House manager is Tim Orona. Maura Reinhart is lighting designer. Sara Gray debuts at SMP as costume designer. The set is basically a wooden hill, thanks to Dan Bergmann’s carpentry. Although considered a “family-friendly” show, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is recommended for ages 7 years and up. It will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse weekends through Sept. 7. Please note that curtain times have been arranged also to be “family-friendly.” They are 7 p.m. Fridays, 5 p.m. Saturdays, and 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $25 general, $22 for seniors (65+) and students (13-17), and $15 for children 12 and under. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. City lots offer free parking. For ticket reservations or more information, phone (626) 355-4318, or visit the website, www.sierramadreplayhouse.org, for online ticketing. For reservations for groups of 15 or more, phone (626) 836-2125.

Recycle Used Oil & Filters! Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used motor oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via stormwater systems, posing a great risk to the environment. Holden names Monrovia educator: ‘All Star Teacher of the Year’ Students in Kyle McClure’s science classes can often be heard singing or clapping or creating fun stories with silly characters. It’s how he keeps their 12-year-old brains engaged. Kyle McClure’s devotion to his students and teaching is why Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) has selected the Monrovia middle school teacher as his “All Star Teacher” for 2013. McClure was recognized today at a special ceremony in Sacramento sponsored by StudentsFirst. “Helping a child find his or her place in the world is an important part of the education process and Kyle McClure is changing lives every day,”

said Assemblymember Holden. “He creates a stimulating learning environment in his classroom that makes these young people want to learn more. I am honored to recognize him for his hard work and devotion to education.” Kyle McClure was chosen for his ability to engage students in his life science and physical science classes at Clifton Middle School, inspiring them to learn while having them approach learning in a different way. “As a teacher, my goal is to create a learning environment that is safe and stimulating. I want my students to know what is expected of them, and to become addicted to academic success,”

explained McClure. McClure, who was Monrovia Unified’s teacher of the year in 2012, will receive a $200 gift certificate for school supplies for his classroom as part of his award.

Crime Trends from Temple Station The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple Station provides world class law enforcement services to the cities of Bradbury, Duarte, Rosemead, South El Monte and Temple City, including the unincorporated county communities of South San Gabriel, El Monte, Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte (M.A.D.), East Pasadena, and North San Gabriel. The following summarizes the statistics gathered for May 2013. Summer is here! The statistics provided with this article represent information collected for May 2013, but crime data being collected for June and July indicate similar trends. Violent crime was down, but crimes of burglary and grand theft remain a constant. Please, take the time for prevention. Do an assessment of your property.

Walk around your house or business. Take corrective action to clear overgrowth of plants or debris around doors and windows. If you have areas around your house or business which are less frequented, clean the area and make sure the portals are secure. Reinforce vulnerable areas to make it more difficult for thieves to penetrate. If you own a business, make sure you have good locks and take the time to chain down or secure any expensive equipment. Store owners; do not leave any currency in cash drawers. Take the tray out of the register at the close of business and prop it up where it is visible to anyone looking through your windows. Call Temple Station and report suspicious persons or activities immediately. Attend community meetings

and become a neighborhood watch member. Temple Station will assist you in finding a representative for your area. Vehicle theft and burglary can be reduced if you do your part. Do not leave valuables in your vehicles. Some sophisticated criminals have devised ways to bypass security devices and locks, but most thefts continue to be crimes of opportunity. Help us help you. If you need to report an incident or would like some additional information concerning crime prevention, please call Temple Station at (626) 285-7171 or dial 9-1-1in the case of an emergency. Crime Stoppers can be contacted at 800-222-TIPS or text TIPLA and your message to 274637. E-mail tips can be sent to www. lacrimestoppers.org.

Key senate committee passes Holden bill to give military a tax break Assemblymember Chris Holden’s legislation to give service members a tax break when they are transferred to California was approved today by the Senate Governance & Finance Committee. AB 143, the Military Use Tax Exemption, would eliminate use taxes – a type of sales tax – on personal property purchased by an active duty military member who has been transferred into the state. “California is home to

nearly 13% of active duty members of the armed forces stationed in the U.S. It just seems the right thing to do to relieve some of the tax burden for these men and women who are already sacrificing so much in service to their country,” stated Assemblymember Holden. Under current law, a “use tax” is levied on items purchased out-ofstate for use in California. Generally, when an active duty service

member in Texas buys a computer or furniture, then three months later is transferred to a base in California, he or she would be required to pay a “use tax”. Under AB 143 the tax would be waived for active duty personnel and National Guard. AB 143 enjoys widespread support including the State Board of Equalization and Veterans groups throughout California. It now moves to the Senate.

The new Hale Medical Center is a state-of-the-art 74,360 square-foot facility slated to open in late spring of 2014. The center is already 35% occupied before going to the marketplace. A new bridge will be built across the westbound lanes of Huntington Drive to allow easy access from the building to the hospital, which recently added a new wing. “I am very pleased and quite enthusiastic to begin this project with my new partner,” said Dick Hale CEO of The Hale Corp. and a City Councilman in Bradbury. “With the recent multi-million dollar expansion of our local hospital, the need for additional facilities for doctors and other health care professionals is clear and the timing is right.”

Methodist Hospital was accredited as a stroke center last year and has attracted many notable physicians to its staff. “This addition will

enable the hospital to continue attracting physicians to the campus, enabling continued growth of the hospital,” said Methodist President and CEO Dan Ausman.

Celebrate financial independence Generations of Americans have sought financial independence through both economic highs and lows. As we celebrate Independence Day this month, take time to celebrate the freedoms our democracy offers and also reflect on what you can do to help ensure longterm financial stability for yourself and your family. Consider the following ideas and actions: • Be true to yourself. While a competitive personality may help you get ahead in some areas of your life, no one wins when you try to keep up with “the Jones’.” It’s important to understand your own financial circumstances and resist the urge to match the lifestyle of those around you. Expensive lifestyles that indicate financial success may simply be a façade for big spenders. Instead of following their lead, consider y o u r budget, longterm goals and personal values when making important financial decisions. Pursue your own happiness within your means and the real prize – a secure financial future – will likely follow. • Pay yourself first. This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard the advice to “pay yourself first.” This guidance is relevant through all economic circumstances and life stages. Explore and take advantage of every opportunity you have to fund your savings with minimal effort. Automatically invest a portion of every paycheck into your retirement account and be sure to maximize any employer match that’s available to you. It’s also easy to set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to your savings account, or to have a specified amount regularly direct-deposited

from your paycheck. A system like this makes saving a priority while also allowing you to meet your monthly expenses. • Be realistic and be prepared. Optimism is a classic American trait, but don’t let this otherwise positive characteristic cloud your judgment. Have you considered what may happen if you faced a sudden job loss, long-term illness, natural disaster or other unexpected event? Review your insurance coverage (including life, health, disability, property, auto and long-term care policies) and ensure you and your family are properly protected. It’s also a good idea to have enough liquid assets available to cover six months worth of expenses.

Though it’s not fun to temporarily squelch your optimism, most people feel more confident about the future once they know they’re financially prepared for a variety of scenarios. • Control your debt. Payments on consumer debt, student loans, and excessive car or mortgage payments can cripple your ability to save and make you feel like you’ll be financially dependent for eternity. Though the best approach is to minimize how much you borrow, take control by establishing a plan that will systematically reduce the outstanding balance on any existing loans. Another bonus to staying on top of debt repayment is an improved credit rating, which may allow

you to access loans when opportunities that could benefit your financial position arise, like a small business venture or low interest equity line of credit. • Put your plan in writing. When our Founding Fathers declared their aspirations for our nation, they took a very important step – they wrote them down. Use this as inspiration to create a written plan that outlines your personal dreams and goals, as well as the actions you’ll need to take to achieve them. If the financial part seems overwhelming, consider consulting a financial advisor. He or she can provide guidance on saving for retirement, funding your child’s education or working toward any other financial goal that’s important to you. A s Americans, we share certain unalienable rights – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. While the last of those means something different to everyone, planning ahead and establishing financial independence can play an important role in helping your goals and dreams become a reality. ‘Gabe’s Place’ mentors kids in San Gabriel To make sure not every kid was just sitting on his or her behind all summer, Fr. Bruce Wellems of the San Gabriel Mission decided to do something about it: He decided to have kids help each other. “We started a new program this summer,” Wellems said. “It’s called Gabe’s Place.” So, what’s Gabe’s Place? “The idea of Gabe’s place is two- fold,” Wellems said. “One is to serve the kids during the summer. With the cuts being made to summer programming at so many schools we thought it would be timely to offer something for kids. There are four components to it: recreation, arts, life skills and a little bit of tutoring.” Wellems said the tutoring and mentoring part is the program’s most important. “The component that most interested me was the mentoring aspect of it,” he said. “We are inviting kids who are college students to come and work for the

By SHEL SEGAL summer. They get a little stipend for this. We’re really training them how to mentor kids and how to work with young people.” There are around 40 kids from grades one through six in the program with about 10 students in high school and college doing the mentoring, Wellems said. He added there is a spiritual side to the program as well. “We’re designing this program for them to do well and we meet with them once a week to reflect – what does it mean to you? What did you learn this week?” Wellems said “They’re constantly being aware of working together and what it’s like to serve kids. So, the whole idea is to provide some mentoring opportunity and have them reflect on their service and learn from their experience.” In addition, the main subjects being tutored were reading and math, Wellems said. But there was more to the program than just

studying. “Every week they organized an outdoor activity,” he said. “They visited a bakery. They went swimming. They visiting some of the businesses in the community and took a walk in the park.” One mentor was Sal Ramirez from El Monte, who acted as the program coordinator. Ramirez said that learning can be a twoway street. “We’re trying to provide summer activities for the students,” Ramirez said. “I’m learning how to make kids have fun, how to bring joy to children and help others in the process. Sometimes the kids teach you how to enjoy the smaller things in life.” Gabe’s Place is a free program that will be offered again next summer. To participate, you don’t need to be a member of the parish. For more information, please call Wellems at (626) 457-3035. (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@ beaconmedianews.com).

Joann Steinmeier feted at garden reception It has been my observation over the past 50 years, that the City of Arcadia has been blessed with outstanding elected officials. Joann Steinmeier is one. She stepped down this past June, after 24 years as one of the stars of the Arcadia School Board of Directors. On June 27 a reception was held in the beautiful flowing gardens of Lori and Steve Phillipi, in the Santa Anita Oaks. Beverages, finger food and miniature desserts were served. It was a warm afternoon but a lovely breeze worked its charm. Joann, told me she had two surprises first the AUSD PEP Band serenaded her and the second was, Mayor Mickey Segal’s proclamation declaring it Joann Steinmeier Day. Special letters, from her former Superintendents of Schools, Terry Towner and Joel Shawn, had great meaning for her. Joann, served thru many difficult times and always seem to direct her actions in a forward path that turned out

Angel Bai (Arcadia), second from left, and Mary VanDyke (Pasadena), far right, both student volunteers at the Los Angeles Zoo, were among six youngsters and two adult mentors* who spent an extraordinary "summer vacation" conducting research in Thailand as part of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association's Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study program. Their unusual, life-changing experiences in late July included working alongside scientists at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), a Thai non-profit organization based in Chiang Rai. With Asian elephants in Thailand particularly endangered (approximately 1,500 left in captivity, 2,000 remaining in the wild in Thailand, and fewer than 50,000 throughout Asia), the scientists' goals to understand elephant behavior will result both to better understand the evolution of intelligence in non-primates, and to potentially develop human-elephant conflict mitigation protocols. The Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study is a hands-on scientific research program series funded for the last six years through the private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association by Linda Duttenhaver, whose philanthropy focuses on opportunities for students. Changing the face of Arcadia Continued from page 1

most evident as is the demolition of one block of old shops on Santa Anita to make way from Rusnak’s new showroom, something Paul Rusnak has been wanting for a long, long time. The Gold line construction for the bridge over Santa Anita is moving swiftly and some long time residents are even remembering a train that use to pass through Arcadia years ago. Businessman George Fasching has been adding his two cents every couple of weeks via the large sign he uses to advertise the car wash. This week, Fasching makes reference to the Super Chief From the late 1930s to the 1950s, Hollywood adopted the Super Chief as the primary mode of travel as well as the subject of novels and motion pictures. In MGM’s The Hucksters, a brutal satire on the ad industry, Clark Gable says to another character: “Only talent agents and kept woman ride the Chief. But the Super Chief is an exclusive club for New York – Hollywood commuters.” According to local historian Michael L.

Grace of Pasadena. The Super Chief was also Santa Fe’s premiere all room Pullman sleeping car train that use to run daily from Chicago to Los Angeles. The Chief was Santa Fe’s other express extra all-Pullman fare train. The Super Chief made the Santa Fe Railway a household word, according to Grace. While the Gold Line may not have the romantic feel of trains such as The Super Chief, it will certainly take a significant number of people off the roads and freeways when the line is completed in 2015.

The super chief may not be coming through anytime soon, but you can almost set your watch by the precision in which the construction for the Foothill Extension Gold Line in being completed, at least in Arcadia. -Courtesy Photo

PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

Compliance through great patient care

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

able to continue to collect usage data. After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

Not currently screening for Sleep Apnea?

If you are not currently screening your patients for sleep apnea and would like to learn more about how we can help you, please call.

liance Program PAP Comp

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.

Copa Vida Tea and Coffee House opens in Pasadena during the August Moon By Terry Miller

Okay, so someone has opened yet another coffee and tea shop in Pasadena… big deal, you say, right? Well broadly speaking, yes, it is a very big deal. At Copa Vida , the art of tea, coffee and conversation goes well above and beyond the known dominion of cafes and counter culture. Copa Vida propels one into a pungent alternate universe where coffee and tea experts transform not only how you drink and what but how you’ll feel about the rich history of the tea and coffee growers of the world plus you’ll learn what it really means to operate a fair and direct trade business. Genuinely passionate about their business, Steve Chang and wife Elaina opened Copa Vida in the old red white and bluezz location at 70 South Raymond last week in Old Pasadena to immediate shining reviews from customers and friends who attended their grand opening. The idea: keep it simple and do it exceptionally well, be fair and honest. Copa Vida tastefully remodeled the old red white and bluezz location into a sparse gathering place where you can enjoy solo coffee or sit with others for stimulating conversation. The mesosphere is light and full of aromas which are enchantingly distinctive and inspiring at the same time. They’ll invite you to sit in one of two rooms and experience diverse worlds of flavor. Educating the palate, as well as the mind. Principally, Copa Vida is two separate cafes under the same historic roof in Old Pasadena. One is devoted to the fine

art of tea, tea making and education plus steeping and appreciating the best teas from around the world. During our recent visit we were treated to a special tea ceremony in which customers get to sample three exceptional teas at various stages of heat and steeping while poured into a small vessel where you inhale the aroma. Not unlike the way you would experience a fine wine you then pour the tea into another vessel and repeat the aroma assessment with the first, now empty, vessel. Sounds complicated, but really its quite simple and a very pleasing way to experience tea and the company of others. Out tea expert this day was Do Kim who was serving Red Blossom teas with a minimum steep time of 40 seconds prepared in a Gong Fu tea set. Kim told guests that the tea we experienced was picked from Lugu Mountain in Taiwan. An exceptional tea , rich in history and left me wondering why I ever put milk and sugar with my British teas. A fine tea should require no sweetening but they do offer honey as well as other natural sweeteners if you so desire for your teas and coffee. Lugu Township, located in Nantou County, just above Jhushan, has all of the qualities needed for growing tea including generous elevation (between 600 and 1,200 meters), a cool climate, fresh mountain spring water and fertile land. Its specialty is tungTing Dongding Oolong Tea, which is produced on and around Dongding Mountain. Although not the first place to plant

tea in Taiwan, Lugu's tea history does extend back some 150 years, to 1855, when a Lugu resident, Lin Feng-chi, traveled to China's Fujian Province for the imperial civil service examination. When he returned, he brought the happy news of his success and 36 tea plants. Twelve of these adapted well to Lugu's Dongding Mountain conditions, and so began the cultivation of Dongding Oolong, a prized tea that is exported all over the world. The other room is devoted to the love of coffee in all its aromatic grandeur. From the traditional to the lesser known cold coffees, one can sense the care and love that has gone into their choices. Chang along with his staff of eight is highly knowledgeable when it comes to tea and coffee origins, and all the intricacies therein. Copa Vida is a strong advocate of free and fair trade in this (and other) businesses. As Chang puts it, “ I really love tea and coffee…” but he’s very careful about where he buys. That passion is evident in the creation of each and every drink prepared at Copa Vida. Chang says the experiences either at the coffee or tea room is ‘gender neutral’ whereas in some enterprises tea ( or high tea) could be considered more of a

feminine experience. On a recent trip to Costa Rica and Rome, Chang and his wife fell in love with coffee again while experiencing some of the traditional methods of brewing craft teas and coffees along with ancient methods combined with modern technology to create what Chang says is the Copa Vida experience.

One of my strong recommendations has to be the Freddo: a very slow brewed craft coffee of exceptional quality and refreshing flavor, served cold. Actually, cold slowed drip brewed for 15 hours. Truly outstanding. Direct Trade and a philosophy of passion for his customers’ enjoyment of coffee and tea, is

Chang’s mantra. Chang also has plans to continue the music tradition red white and bluezz created over the years with live music on the weekends. Copa Vida is located at 70 South Raymond on the corner of Green Street. Call (626) 213-3952 for more information or visit their website at copa-vida. com.

El Monte breaks ground on new commercial building The El Monte City Council held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new commercial office building that is expected to serve as a catalyst for future development on Tuesday, at 12346 Valley Blvd. Slated to be built on a 1.29-acre plot of land that once housed two buildings and a nonconforming billboard, the commercial building will be built on the south side of Valley

Boulevard, east of Durfee Avenue. The 27,280-square-foot building will consist of eight units ranging in size from 3,100 square feet to 3,800 square feet. Each unit will contain office space on the mezzanine level and flexible floor space on the ground level that can be utilized for additional office, retail/wholesale commercial, showroom, warehouse and storage space.

The project design demonstrates compliance with the principles of the Community Design Element of the General Plan, including eliminating blight and neighborhood deterioration by placing a vacant and underutilized portion of land into a productive commercial use and facilitating the development of a strong commercial element within the City.

can be found at: http://goo. gl/maps/qz8jm. The active ingredients in AQUADUET™ are Prallethrin and Sumithrin. Both are pyrethroids, synthetic versions of pyrethrin pesticides produced from plants. The combination of the two pesticides causes the mosquitoes to become agitated and fly from their resting areas, making them more vulnerable to pesticide exposure. This makes AQUADUET™ more effective against hard-to-control species like Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito) which typically rest during the early morning hours when adulticiding is most effective and least likely to impact other insects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers pyrethroid-containing products to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people. Residents are not required to take any special precautions however people are advised to remain indoors during the treatment period. AQUADUET™ is

toxic to fish and aquatic insects. The District recommends residents cover fish ponds during the application to prevent possible deposition of droplets. Outdoor pet food and water bowls should be covered or moved indoors during the treatment. The product breaks down rapidly in sunlight and will not leave a residue. Additional information about AQUADUET™ can be found at www.clarke. com. The Asian tiger mosquito can be identified by its unique size, color, and feeding habits. The mosquito is approximately ¼ inch long and has distinctive black and white stripes across its body and legs. This is an aggressive day-time biting mosquito that can transmit the viruses that cause dengue, chikungunya, and encephalitis. Residents are urged to: • CALL and REPORT any sightings of small, black and white mosquitoes, or if you are being bitten by mosquitoes during the day! • DUMP and DRAIN all standing water

around your home. • DISCARD any containers, cans, buckets, and old tires around the home or store them so they do not collect water. • Remove any water dishes from beneath potted plants and drill drain holes in all decorative flower pots, tire swings, and trash cans. • Do not store water in uncovered buckets or rain barrels. Ensure rain barrels are completely sealed to prevent mosquito entry. • Empty bird baths and small fountains completely or clean them thoroughly every 3 days. • Clean out rain gutters and lawn drains to ensure water does not collect. • Talk to your neighbors about preventing mosquitoes from breeding. For more information about the Asian tiger mosquito, to submit a service request, or to report possible sightings, please contact the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District at (626)814-9466 (www. sgvmosquito.org)

Written by David E. Silvey, a customer satisfaction and operations manager, the book offers witty and honest anecdotes about his own experiences, providing inspiration and support for any reader in a stressful situation. It demonstrates

how readers can successfully navigate frustrating situations and people in a conflict-free way. In “The Smart Way,” readers learn how to prepare themselves mentally by being aware and clear about what they want in order to productively get what they want and need. Not only does Silvey teach readers how to accomplish this, he also shows how to create a winwin situation by helping the "other" person standing in their way get what he or she wants and needs, too. “No reason to be frustrated with that hotel clerk, store manager or governmental worker any longer! David Silvey shows how to quickly turn an obstacle into an ally who will be delighted to help you get

what you need or want. It’s as brilliant as it is simple. I use his method regularly.” Carmen Berry, MSW, New York Times bestselling author of “Girlfriends, When Helping You is Hurting Me” and “Take the “U” Out of Clutter.” After graduating from Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in management engineering, author David E. Silvey worked as a systems and industrial engineer before earning his M.B.A. from Regent University. Monday August 5 At 10:30pm, residents in the 600 block of Manzanita Avenue woke to the sound of their doorbell. Moments later they heard noises on the side of the house and went outside to investigate. They discovered a window screen had been removed from a side window and noticed a nearby motion detector light had been activated. As they were examining the window, they heard the sound of a vehicle being driven away. Police were summoned to the scene. As officers were investigating the Manzanita Avenue incident, three citizens reported seeing two suspicious individuals in the area of Sunnyside Avenue and Ramona Avenue. Both individuals were wearing dark colored Hoodies. When they discovered they were being watched, both individuals entered an older model Acura and drove away from the area. Police units began searching the area and at 11:05pm located a similarly described Acura parked at the curb in the 400 block of Ramona Avenue. The engine was still warm to the touch and a laptop computer was observed in plain sight on the rear seat. Officers initiated a surveillance of the vehicle from a distance away. At 12:30am, they observe the lights of the Acura activate and the vehicle drove away. A traffic stop was initiated and officers detained the lone occupant for investigation. He was sweating profusely and had dirt and plant de-

bris on his clothing. He was identified as Adan Bernal, 24years of age and it was determined that he was currently on parole for burglary. Bernal was very evasive in his responses to the officers and he denied being with another individual that evening. As the officers were dealing with Bernal, a resident called to report noises outside her residence in the 400 block of Ramona Avenue. Units responded and with the assistance of Arcadia Police Department and the Pasadena Police Department Helicopter, an in-depth search of the area was conducted. No one was located but during this search, the laptop computer, previously seen in the Acura driven by Bernal was found at the curb where the vehicle was parked earlier. Bernal was arrested for burglary and his vehicle seized as evidence. At 3:30am, another resident in the 400 block of Ramona Avenue was awakened by the sounds of all the police activity on her street. When she came downstairs to investigate, she discovered a curtain in the living room window partially open. Upon closer examination, she observed the window screen had been removed and the window lock damaged. Pry marks were evident on the window sill. The evidence suggested that no entry into the residence had been accomplished. Tuesday August 6 Overnight, an unknown suspect entered an unlocked garage located in the 00 block of Bonita Avenue. New items, recently purchased for a construction project were taken. The crime was reported to the resident by a construction worker who arrived in the morning to install the items that were taken. At 11:45am, residents in the 600 block of Edgeview Drive observed an unknown male walking in their backyard. As this individual walked by a kitchen window he made obvious attempts to conceal his identity by pulling up his shirt collar. As the resident exited the house, the individual climbed a fence and ran east. He was described as a male Hispanic 25-30 years old wearing a black baseball cap white shirt and grey shorts. A thorough search utilizing a K-9 and the police helicopter failed to locate this individual.

Mudflow protection for Monrovia neighborhood The Board of Supervisors has authorized the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works to begin emergency efforts to protect residential communities below the Madison Fire Burn Area in Monrovia against the threat of post-fire mud and debris flows. The Madison Fire in April burned more than 80 acres and most of the vegetation which stabilizes

hillsides creating a risk if inundation this winter. “Nearly a dozen homes are at risk of inundation this winter by an estimated 15,000 cubic yards of mud and debris,” said Supervisor Antonovich. The County Department of Public Works will strategically place K-rail and rail-and-timber structures in the burned watershed immediately above these homes as temporary measures against mud and

debris flows. The barriers will remain in place util the burned watershed recovers, which could take about five years. The Board approved $920,000 for the project today, 80 percent of which may be eligible for reimbursement by grant funding through the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Emergency Watershed Protection Program.

Heightened monitoring and reporting of California’s Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) assessments this year identified 242 schools where social media postings occurred during administration of the tests, only 16 of which included postings of test questions or answers. None of the postings affected school test results. As in 2012, when similar numbers of social media postings occurred, the majority involved students posing with the covers of test booklets or with materials that were not legible. The California Department of Education (CDE) placed a cautionary flag on the publicly posted test results for all schools where a posting occurred. (A list of the flagged schools is attached.) =“We take the validity and reliability of our assessments very seriously, and our schools do too, which is why we redoubled our efforts to monitor these postings and alerted school districts when they occurred,” said Deputy Superintendent Deb Sigman,

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Rosemead Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., or soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, at Rosemead City Hall, located at 8838 East Valley Boulevard, Rosemead, regarding the adoption of a Comprehensive Zoning Code Update (Project). Anyone interested in this matter is invited to comment on the project by written response or personal appearance at the public hearing. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: COMPREHENSIVE ZONING CODE UPDATE (MUNICIPAL CODE AMENDMENT 10-07 AND ZONE CHANGE 13-01): The City of Rosemead has completed an Initial Study to complete a comprehensive update of the City’s Zoning Code (Title 17 of the Rosemead Municipal Code) that is pursued to implement General Plan policy and to add provisions mandated by California State law. Revisions to the City’s existing Zoning Map and Single-Family Residential Design Guidelines are proposed to ensure that these documents are internally consistent with the proposed Zoning Code Update. Amendments to the City’s existing Home Occupation business license regulations (Title 5 of the Municipal Code, Chapter 5.41 – Home Occupations) are included in the project for the purpose of allowing Cottage Food Operations (CFOs) as home occupations in residential zoning districts in accordance with State law. Lastly, the project also proposes the adoption of “City Procedures for Implementation of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA),” as State law requires that each city adopt its own procedures for evaluating projects under CEQA guidelines within its jurisdiction. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: An Initial Study was undertaken to determine if the proposed project could have a significant effect on the environment. The Initial Study was prepared and completed in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) guidelines. On the basis of the Initial Study, the City of Rosemead has concluded that the project would have a less than significant impact on the environment and has therefore, prepared a Draft Negative Declaration (ND). The ND reflects the independent judgment of the City as a lead agency per CEQA guidelines. The project site is not on a list compiled pursuant to Government Code section 65962.5. The proposed project is not considered a project of statewide, regional or area-wide significance and would not affect highways or other facilities under the jurisdiction of the State of California Department of Transportation. The Negative Declaration and Initial Study is being distributed for a 30-day public review and comment period from August 15, 2013 to September 13, 2013. Written comments regarding the proposed Negative Declaration must be received by September 13, 2013, 6:00 p.m. Comments should be sent to: Community Development Department, 8838 East Valley Boulevard, Rosemead, CA 91770, Attention: Michelle Ramirez, Community Development Director. Pursuant to Government Code Section 65009 (b), if this matter is subsequently challenged in court, the challenge may be limited to only those issues raised at the public hearing described in this notice or in written correspondence delivered to the City of Rosemead at, or prior to, the public hearing. The Negative Declaration and other information pertinent to the above item are on file in the office of the Community Development Department, Planning Division. Any person interested in the above proceedings may appear at the time and place indicated to testify in support of, or in opposition to, the item(s). DATED THIS 15th DAY OF AUGUST, 2013. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. PCC ‘Porn Professor’ Hugo Schwyzer enters rehab It seemed like a good idea at the time, but apparently it won’t be coming to fruition soon. A professor at Pasadena City College canned plans recently to continue a pornography class after public and university pressure against the idea became too great, according to a published report. The pressure was so much that Professor Hugo Schwyzer has also entered psychological rehab recently, according to a published report. In addition to having an extramarital affair, Schwyzer said he received pressure from the college and also from the online world, which has been giving him a daily dose of hate mail. He also has

By SHEL SEGAL written controversially in the past about gender issues, according to a published report. The professor has picked a sort of popularity over the years – and somewhat infamously – on the Internet and from women’s groups as he has written about his own drug addiction and the fact that he tried to kill himself and his ex-girlfriend 15 years ago, according to his own writings, according to a published report. As someone who has written for several magazines in the past – including Jezebel, xoJane and The Atlantic – said he hopes to either offer the pornography class in the future and assist another professor in teaching it,

according to a published report. Schwyzer actually is the PCC professor who wrote the school’s current policy that bans professorstudent relationships as the college had him write it after he admittedly had sexual relationships with a number of his female students during the first few years he taught at PCC, according to a published report. Many on the Internet – mainly feminists – were pleased with Schwyzer’s choice to drop the class, but were not happy that he gave so many media interviews after the fact, according to a published report. Pasadena PD to crack down on cell phone and texting drivers Pasadena Police Department will be actively ticketing those texting or operating hand-held cell phones on Monday, August 19, 2013. Drivers who break the law and place themselves and others in danger will be cited. Cost for violating cell phone laws start at $162 for the first offense and $285 for subsequent offenses. Other violations for actions that can be classified as distracted driving can range even higher. “We all know that talking on our cell phones while driving is distracting, but that doesn’t stop some people from continuing to do it,” said Pasadena Police Department’s Chief, Phillip L. Sanchez “This effort is intended to educate our community about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. We hope people realize the danger involved and change their driving habits to help protect themselves, their families, and others on the road.” “We are very encouraged to see the usage figures decline, especially after the increase last year”, said

OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. “But any number is too high, since any usage of cell phones while driving takes away too much of our brain’s ability to react to what is happening on the road, not to mention when our hands or eyes are disengaged also.” Following a few uncomplicated steps would go a long way in keeping you safe from distracted driving: • Put your cell phone out of reach or turn it off when you get in the car so you won’t be tempted to use it. • Mention on your outgoing voicemail message that you can’t answer because you might be driving. • Don’t call or text

anyone when there is a good chance that they may be driving. • If you must call or text, pull into a parking space. The extra couple of minutes are worth it. • The ability to multitask while driving is myth. Cell phone use actually diminishes the brain’s ability to drive safely. • Never check Facebook, run an app, read or otherwise allow your full attention to leave the task of safely driving. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

portions of the Arcadia community, we believe it is appropriate to address it and hopefully put the matter to rest. As a result of a call from a CIF representative and information from some students and parents, it became clear that Mr. O'Brien had created a pattern of rules violations through his coaching practices, which in some cases seemed to completely disregard CIF rules. Unfortunately, the violations and his refusal to take responsibility for those actions undermined the many good things he was doing for our students. What’s more, if we didn’t take corrective action to address the violations, the CIF may have imposed sanctions that could have kept our students from competing. We were elected to be education leaders and it's vital that we model integrity and good sportsmanship for our students. We hold our students to the highest standards of honesty; why would we not hold our coaches to that same standard?

The decision to remove Mr. O'Brien as coach was unfortunate and difficult. The championship trophies that line the Arcadia High School trophy cases are evidence that he was able to pull true talent out of our children. But as representatives of this community, we made the decision to remove him because we do not believe that a "win at any cost" mentality has a place in our school district. Instead, we believe our students deserve to be taught that honesty and integrity are the most important character traits we can instill and winning should be the result of hard work and strong performance within the rules. We are fortunate in Arcadia to have some of the most talented, intellectually curious, and focused students in the state, along with a hardworking instructional team that has developed an academic program that optimizes our students' capabilities. The evidence of this fact is overwhelming. From our

unmatched API of 929, a graduation rate of 98.3%, and 93% of our graduates self-identifying as college bound, this community is proud to produce such strong students. As a Board of Education, it is our responsibility to make these hard decisions. It is unfortunate that this reassignment had to occur. But it is also unfortunate that this one decision has become the focus of a recall effort. Given the success we consistently see in AUSD, it is our hope that the community at large will understand that while employment matters are difficult and we all like to get trophies and win, the priority must be maintaining and enhancing the strong academic program we have here at AUSD. Sincerely, Cung Nguyen, Lori Phillipi, and Kay Kinsler Nguyen, Phillipi and Kinsler are members of the Arcadia Unified School District who are the subject of a recall effort related to the decision to remove James O’Brien.
