Making A Difference, One At A Time . . .

As part of our continuing desire to focus on those in our community who care for unwanted animals, we are highlighting here the work that animal rescue organizations and individuals do in helping homeless pets find homes. Last month we featured the issue of feral cats, and the benefits of TNR (trap, neuter, release). This month we follow up with one feral cat'sjourney.

nie Li was never rushed. It was important to follow the cat's lead as to how much touching she would allow. Today, Annie Li is a little love! Sheʼs still the only cat in the house, and basks in attention! She loves to be held, is friendly to everybody, and even plays with a friend's dog. You would never know she had been feral. This cat, who would have been euthanized, and who was predicted to have “not a very long life,” is now 16 years old, and still loves to play chase, and hide and seek! Some feral cats can become a beloved household pet. It takes time, patience, and . . . it takes a rescuer.

Something--hard to say what--made Katherine decide to visit the cat area at the Humane Society that day. She had only intended to see the dogs, and was not at ALL thinking of getting a cat! However, she wandered into the cat area first. All the furry felines in those cages would tug at anyone's heart, but Katherine just browsed. Then-BANG! Without warning, she was suddenly looking into the most vivid blue eyes she had ever seen! These eyes belonged to a bedraggled female, chocolate point Siamese mix. Katherine felt an immediate connection. She was told, though, that the cat was underweight, definitely NOT friendly and definitely NOT adoptable. Saddened, Katherine left. However, for the next few days all she could think about was the intelligent look in those feral but gorgeous blue eyes. She decided to return to the Humane Society to learn more. The news was not
