Temple Sheriff's Station LASD and Duarte on alert for residential burglars Lt. Ignacio Somoano appointed as The City of Duarte and -Lock all doors, winRosemead's "Chief of Police" the Los Angeles County dows, and garage doors beSheriff's Department warn residents to be aware that a burglary occurred in Area 12, or the Fish Canyon Area of Duarte, specifically in the 2900 Block of Freeborn Street. On Friday May 24, between 7:20 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. while an elderly resident was in an adjacent bedroom resting, unknown person(s) entered the home through an open rear bedroom door and stole items in from that bedroom. Stolen items were a Playstation 3, 3 Playstation remote controls, 5 Playstation games, and $200 in U.S. currency . There were no witnesses.

The apprehension of those responsible for these crimes is a major priority of the City of Duarte and the Sheriff's Department.

Three significant arrests were made, in November, December, and in February in connection with some of the Duarte burglaries. There are other criminals at work targeting Duarte neighborhoods. A majority of the home burglaries have occurred in the daytime hours when residents were away from home. Law enforcement continues to work to solve these crimes through increased patrol and presence to prevent other burglaries from occurring. They would like to remind residents that there are things that you can do to help keep your home, neighborhood, and family safe.

Important tips to remember: -Make your home look occupied, leave the TV, radio, or lights on, or your dog in the backyard.

-Use motion detector lights outside.

-Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspaper or flyers to build up while you are away. Arrange for the post office to hold your mail, or a friend or neighbor to collect them regularly.

-Push-button locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Install deadbolt locks on all your outside doors.

-Keep your yard clean and bushes and trees trimmed. Do not give burglars a place to hide.

-If you have an alarm system, use it, even if you leave for a short period of time.

-If you do not have an alarm system buy signs that say you have an alarm and place them around your home.

Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz and Construction Authority CEO Habib F. Balian visited the artist Cha-Rie Tang’s studio Friday and viewed some of the elements of the artist’s works being developed for installation at the future Gold Line Station where the historic Monrovia Depot now sits. The Pasadena studio of Monrovia Gold Line Station Artist, Cha-Rie Tang is one of wondrous works of art in clay and glass with inspiring fired tiles which shall eventually adord the new station for the Gold Line in Monrovia in 2015.

Governor Brown joins global scientists to call for action on climate change Warning that Earth is rapidly approaching a tipping point at which human impacts are causing alarming levels of harm to our planet, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today joined more than 500 world-renowned researchers and scientists to release a groundbreaking call to action on climate change and other global threats to all humanity.

“This is not just about science, this is about activism,” said Governor Brown.

“This is an important challenge, cause and undertaking. We can do it, but we have to do a lot more than we're doing now.”

Governor Brown and the scientists released the call to action at the fourth annual Water, Energy and Smart Technology Summit and Showcase at NASA Ames Research Center.

The 20-page consensus statement, produced at the Governor’s urging and signed by more than 500 concerned scientists, translates key scientific findings from disparate fields into one unified message for poli-

cymakers, industry and the general public. This statement aims to improve the nexus between scientific research and political action on climate change.

The call to action identifies five key threats to the habitable environment that policymakers must address now to avoid the degradation of humanity’s relative health and prosperity along with broad solutions to the challenges outlined: Climate change – Forecasts show that Earth will be hotter than the human species has ever experienced by the year 2070.

Extinctions – At the current rate of species extinction, the world will see the loss of 75 percent of vertebrate species within as little as three centuries.

Loss of ecosystems – As of 2012, more than 40 percent of Earth’s ice-free lands have been changed by human activity, causing species extinction and other impacts to Earth’s biodiversity.

Pollution – Increasing levels of toxic substances in the environment put over

100 million people at direct risk of health problems.

Population growth and consumption – Human population growth contributes to global environmental disruption by adding greenhouse gases and toxic pollutants to the environment and altering ecosystems.

The full text of the statement and the list of the over 500 scientists who signed the document are available on the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere website. The signatories hail from 44 countries and include two Nobel laureates, 33 members of the U.S. National Academy of the Sciences and members of international scientific academies.

The statement’s lead writer is Anthony Barnosky, University of California, Berkeley, professor of integrative biology. Barnosky was the lead author of a scientific paper in 2012 that warned Earth is dangerously close to a tipping point at which climate change is fundamentally altering the biological make-up of the planet.

Bear cub has mid afternoon snack in Duarte home 911 operator calms scared resident

Temple Station received a 9-1-1 call from a female reporting that a bear cub entered her residential window and was seen on the kitchen counter and helped himself to a late afternoon snack. The resident ran to a second floor bathroom and locked the door.

Several units responded to the call, along with a City of Duarte animal control officer. A deputy and the animal control officer entered the house and found the bear on the kitchen counter eating some food.

They left the door open and made noises to scare the bear. The bear ran out via the front door and into

The bear was estimated to have been approximately 1 year old. The Department

attended Pasadena Junior College. She trained with the WASP in Sweetwater, Texas as a ferry and test pilot.

She was killed in Waco, Texas shortly after take-off testing a "newly-repaired" BT13 to see if it was airworthy for a male pilot.

She died two weeks before her 23rd birthday. She was engaged to be married later that month. Her coffin was sent home in a cheap pine box, and she received no military funeral as WASP were not “officially recognized” by the military at that time - not until 1977. However, the city of Monrovia businesses shut down the day of her funeral, and the Police Department (her father was Chief) and the Fire Department were the pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. She rests now at Live Oak Cemetery.

The WASP organization, WINGTIP-To-WINGTIP Association has been accepted by the Tournament of Roses to have a float in the 2014. They need all the help financially they can get as well as much recognition to make this float possible.

The purpose of having a float is to pay tribute to the WASP and perpetuate the legacy and story of the WASP for future generations--like the Tuskegee Airmen who had a float a few years ago.

Bettie Mae's story came to light when Pasadena City College graphic artist Christina Rose found out about her amazing history, dedication and ultimate sacrifice.

In 2000, PCC celebrated its 75th anniversary. Bettie

was selected to be one of their 75 most distinguished alumni (along with Jackie Robinson) and was honored at an impressive awards dinner at the Civic Auditorium.

On March 10, 2010 Bettie would have been honored at a Congressional Medal ceremony in Washington, DC, where all WASP were presented gold medals for their service. Hopefully, her surviving relatives received hers posthumously.

"Sent home in a cheap pine box" was featured in the text of the bill sent to Congress for approval for the Gold Medal. Bettie Mae Scott was a sort of ‘poster child’ for the cause, according to Christina Rose.

Thirty-eight young women gave their lives in military service to the United States of America in a quasi-secret program in World War II, thirty eight deaths that received no particular honors or remembrance until March 9, 2010 when a "missing man" formation of jet fighters flew over the Air Force Memorial in Washington DC, the day before their colleagues, the Women Air force Service Pilots received the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their invaluable role in winning that terrible war.

“The thirty eight died in the normal way that so many perish in times of conflict, not as a direct result of enemy fire, but in various training and service accidents, engine failures, one taking off and collided with landing plane that had not been cleared by the tower, another burning in

a cockpit due to a possibly faulty maintenance repair, and yet another roaring off into the skies over LA with her P-51, never to be seen or heard of again . . . . The normal tragedies of military service . . . young lives cut short because of that strong desire to find a way to serve a higher calling than one's own personal interest, one's nation, a nation that one feels"worth the sacrifice" that may be made, like Bettie Mae Scott (http://fifinella.com/bettiescott. htm) a few weeks before her 23rd birthday.”

Thirty-eight who stand for and represent so many others who served as the WASP and in all the services of our nation, both private and governmental, all who shared, and still share the ideals of those young beautiful women.

I know many of you celebrated Memorial Day last weekend with picnics,

games in the parks, family get-togethers and other fun things. When you did so, I hope you took time to remember its purpose.

I hope the flags flying at half-mast gave you pause to question how many men and women have fallen through the years? How many died on foreign soil?

How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many mines unseen? How many foxholes and ditches be-

When I see a flag drape a coffin carried by brothers in uniform I question how many loved ones' tears? I think of all the children, of mothers, sisters and the wives, of fathers, brothers, sons and husbands--all with interrupted lives. The bugler plays Taps and I know it means "Amen".

So many have died for you and me. No, my friends, freedom is not free.

Old Town Monrovia is the only Southern California “Main Street” competing for a facelift – including paint for façades, porches, railings, shutters and other exterior building trims – against 100 cities across the country.

On Wednesday, Benjamin Moore, a paint manufacturer and color authority, announced its biggest initiative ever to revitalize communities across North America through the launch of “Main Street Matters,” according to a press release issued by the paint company.

The campaign asks consumers around the country to cast their vote online for which 20 Main Streets should be revitalized of the more than 100 North American cities nominated at www.paintwhatmatters. com. Monrovia was selected by the company, though representatives did not indicate why Monrovia was chosen.

The other California cities are Martinez, Gilroy and Eureka.

Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said she was very excited to learn about the opportunity – especially when public funds that used to be available to assist with these types of façade improvements have been harder and harder to come by in recent years.

“We are very grateful to be included in this program, and are hoping that Monrovians and all Southern California residents will cast their votes for our beloved Old Town,” Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said.

Old Town Monrovia is

the symbolic heartbeat of the community, and has proven to be a regional attraction because of its weekly Friday Night Family Festival, beautiful Krikorian Move Theater, and an abundance of quaint stores, eateries and public amenities such as the public library.

The effort will be undertaken with the help of multiple partner organizations around the country, including Make It Right, a longtime partner of Benjamin Moore that was founded by actor-philanthropist Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt will be lending his voice in support of the effort that Benjamin Moore is undertaking with Main Street Matters.

In addition to partner organizations, this effort will be brought to life with local Benjamin Moore dealers and in conjunction with local municipalities, small businesses and local Chambers of Commerce. The effort will begin this summer and the work on repainting these Main Streets will be completed over the next year.

“Our Main Streets are the vital hubs of our communities – and Benjamin Moore and our network of independent dealers have always been integral parts of Main Street,” said David Melançon, Chief Marketing Officer of Benjamin Moore. “This investment we’re making in communities around North America is core to our business and to who we are; Main Streets make us who we are and we’re proud to honor that with this effort.

Benjamin Moore will not only provide the paint and supplies needed for façades, porches, railings, shutters and other exterior building trims, but its color experts will consult on the best choices to enhance the architectural style, regional influences and historic references in each community.

Skilled professional painters, many of them members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, will be hired, putting another segment of local business to work along with the local Benjamin Moore retailer who will be mixing the paints that are used.

The communications portion of “Main Street Matters”, which allows local businesses and community members to tell their stories, includes not only the online component, but also is being supported by an aggressive advertising program. A mix of national and local market TV, radio, online and print ads will hit North America starting in May as part of the company’s overall increase in marketing, which is up 61% compared to the previous year.

Voting began at 12:00 a.m. EST on May 16, 2013 and will end at 11:59 p.m.

China’s environmental activist Wu Lihong has been refused a passport by the government of China to go to Los Angeles to accept an award from Visual Artists Guild. Visual Artists Guild is a human rights organization which champions the right of freedom of speech and expression.

After Mr. Wu was refused a passport, his wife and daughter applied for a passport but have yet to receive one.

The award ceremony is scheduled for this Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Golden Dragon Restaurant in Los Angeles Chinatown.

Without giving a rea-

son, the school where Mr. Wu’ daughter is attending changed her dissertation date from May 19 to May 27, the date after Visual Artists Guild’s award ceremony. This change affects not only Mr. Wu’s daughter but all her classmates as well.

Mr. Wu has been active for more than two decades about the pollution of Lake Tai, China’s third largest fresh water lake. He was named “Environmental Warrior” by China’s National Peoples Congress in 2005. When Mr. Wu continued his crusade about Lake Tai, he was sentenced to three years in prison on

some trumped up charges in August, 2007.

It was also reported in Australian Financial Review that Mr. Wu was offered “compensation” if “ his family did not attend the award ceremony and even suggested they could find a job for his daughter”.

This series of attempts to block Mr. Wu family from coming to Los Angeles to accept the award follows China’s government release of a white paper this month stating that “China is working hard to build a beautiful country and earnestly guaranteeing the citizens’ environmental rights and interests.”

El Monte families run, ride and walk More than 90 residents took advantage of the sunny Spring weather to join the City of El Monte at the 2013 Family Fit Run, Ride and Walk event on Saturday, May 11.

The event, hosted by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with Bike SGV, was designed to encourage families to get active together at El Monte’s Pioneer Park.

The family friendly, non-competitive event was open to all ages and fitness levels.

Margaret Lueders celebrates 100 years Long time resident of The Leven Oaks, Assisted Living in Monrovia turned 100 on Sunday, May 26.

Margaret Lueders was born in 1913 in Pilger, Nebraska, the fifth of twelve children. She and her husband, Emil moved to Monrovia in 1945. Emil started a plumbing company in Monrovia on Olive Avenue. They built a house on Valle Vista that year for about $2000.00.

Margaret and Emil were very involved in The First Baptist Church in Monrovia for many years.

Margaret was surrounded by about 100 friends and relatives at her birthday party Sunday. Both her son Emil Jr and Tim were present, as were their wives, Nelda and Joann to celebrate this milestone birthday with Margaret.

Margaret was given proclamations and cards from City of Monrovia, Senators Boxer and Fiendstien, Assenblyman Holden, Governor Brown, Supervisor Antonovich and President Obama!

Baldwin really had a soft spot for birds according to historian Sandy Snider: Apparently the best way to get fired from a job on the Baldwin Ranch was to mistreat an animal, especially Peacocks.

No one knows the exact number of peafowl Baldwin imported from India, but by the 1880s "there were some 50 of them on the ranch.”

Some love ‘em and some hate ‘em. Residents such as retired Pasadena Police officer Thomas Burns who lives a block west of the Arboretum is fed up with the peafowl destroying his plants, and littering his yard.

Actually he and his wife are fed up and want the city to “do something.”

He’s not the only one. Residents in this affluent neighborhood are had it and want the city to “do something” about it.

Scores of streets in Arcadia are “littered” with the peafowl says one neighbor across from the Arboretum.

A drive down a residential road confirmed the fact that driving is not only difficult when they cross the road to another garden but the numbers are extraordinary.

The Arboretum says the peacocks are not their birds, they’re feral and therefore “ everyone’s birds.” In a manner of speaking.

Susan Eubank at the Arboretum Library said a research study conducted three years ago had the count of birds in the Arboretum at 150. But estimates of a much higher number exist, depending on who you talk to.

The birds can be seen on rooftops, car tops and in gardens. In the Burns’ home, at any given time the number of birds feeding on his plants is approximately 9.

We counted over 200 just in one neighborhood on Tuesday evening.

However, there is nothing the city can do - as it is wildlife. Part of the joy of living, so close to nature one

could argue. However, not all residents agree and hope that the city or humane society does something to stop the proliferation and the destruction of peoples’ yards and property.

Today, hundreds of colorful peacocks, and the less flamboyant female peahens, roam the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden in Arcadia and surrounding neighborhoods. They are always looking for food.

Peafowl may seem an odd choice for a ranch, but they were actually quite handy to have around back then. Not only did they kill snakes and keep the snail population at bay.

Arboretum librarian Eubank says the Peacocks also help keep coyotes at bay. The strength of the birds is under-estimated and they are particularly protective of their young.

Back then, owning a peacock also was a status symbol. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was quite fashionable with the well-todo who had land to put various animals on their property that they found colorful,

attractive or unique.

After Baldwin's death in 1909 at age 81, his daughter Anita sold off parcels of the ranch, eventually selling the last 1,300 acres in 1936 to Harry Chandler of the Los Angeles Times. In 1947, the state and the county of Los Angeles jointly purchased 111 acres to create an arboretum around the heart of the old ranch. Later the county purchased additional parcels, bringing the Arboretum's total acreage to today's 127.

The City of Arcadia has provided the information below for residents of Arcadia, complete with suggestions for plants that peacocks DON’T like.

Peacocks in Arcadia attracts the attention of peahens by fanning its elegant upper tail coverts (the feathers that cover the bird’s tail, not the actual tail) over it’s back. The males tail train will lengthen and get fuller over the first two to three years and will have reached consistent length and quality at five to six years old. The peacock will molt the tail in late summer signifying the end of the breeding season.

Peafowl reach breeding age at two years. Peahens usually lay clutches of three to 10 eggs in a season, starting in April. The incubation time for peachicks is 28 - 30 days.

Peafowl are incapable of long flights, however they are able to fly short distances such as into trees where they like to roost.

Peacocks are a wonderful part of living in Arcadia, however they can sometimes be disruptive and destructive. Below are some ways to deter peafowl from inhabiting your property: 1. When planning your garden, choose plants that peafowl find “unappetizing.”

Please refer to the provided list of plants and flowers that peafowl like and dislike.

2. Peafowl do not like water. The intermittent use of sprinklers or a hose will act as a negative reinforcement for the birds.

3. Peafowl like to roost in trees that provide safety and protection. Trim or thin overhanging trees to deter peafowl from roosting in branches.

4. Peafowl like to eat young tender seedlings.

Cover or fence off young plants until they are well-established and less attractive to the birds.

5. Peafowl are attracted to compost heaps because of the seeds and bugs. Don’t stop composting, however covering your compost bin will keep the peafowl out.

By removing pet food once it is consumed, covering your compost bins and exchanging plants that peacocks find desirable with plants that they find distasteful, you should be able to reduce the presence of peacocks on your property. "I can tell you this: if your house got broken into and nobody actually saw someone coming out of it, deputies don't have the time or the ability to go door-to-door asking neighbors if they saw any strange cars," he said.

"And you're not going to get a fingerprinting team out there for at least two weeks” Hayhurst admitted.

Tom Torlakson reports sharp drop in number of districts in financial jeopardy A new report shows that less than half as many California school districts are in financial jeopardy now as a year ago, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today.

The state's Second Interim Status Report for 201213 shows that 92 local educational agencies (LEAs) are either in negative or qualified financial status. The same report from a year ago showed a record 188 LEAs in financial jeopardy.

“When the number of districts struggling financially is cut in half, we know we are making tremendous progress—especially after years of tough budget cuts,” Torlakson said. “But the 92 districts that still face financial jeopardy represent some 1.7 million students, and we must continue our work to get them on solid fiscal ground. Thankfully, voter approval of Proposition 30— and the budget proposal that reflects it—keeps us firmly on that path.”

Eight LEAs received negative certifications; 84 received qualified certifica-

tions. This is down from 124 LEAs in the First Interim Status Report for 2012-13, issued in March, and from the 188 LEAs in the Second Interim Report for 2011-12, issued a year ago.

Twice a year, the California Department of Education receives Notice of Interim Certifications on the financial status of the state's 1,037 LEAs, which include school districts, county offices of education, and joint powers agencies. The certifications are classified as positive, qualified, or negative.

A positive certification is assigned when an LEA will meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent fiscal years. A qualified certification is assigned when an LEA may not meet its financial obligations for the current or two subsequent fiscal years. This certification allows the LEA's county office of education to provide assistance to the district.

A negative certification—the most serious of the classifications—is assigned when an LEA will be unable to meet its financial ob-

ligations for the remainder of the current year or for the subsequent fiscal year. This certification means the LEA's county office of education may intervene in the district's finances.

The assistance or intervention by the county office may include assigning external consultants, requiring a district fiscal recovery plan, or disallowing certain district expenditures.

This new list is a compilation of the certifications by LEAs that were due April 16, 2013, and cover the financial and budgetary status of the districts for the period ending January 31, 2013. The certifications reflect whether the LEAs are able to meet their financial obligations for the remainder of the current fiscal year and subsequent two fiscal years, based on projections at that point in time.

These certifications predate the Governor's May Revision to the proposed 201314 state budget. Because these Interim Status Reports are snapshots in time, the LEAs' financial status may have changed since these certifications were collected.

“Nobody disputes that many of the people at Guantanamo deserve to face justice for what they have done. But the system is so broken that for many that day will never come.

Instead of holding these people in an indefinite limbo, we should be trying them in a court of law. Instead of relying on military commissions, which have convicted only seven terrorists since 9/11, we should be relying on civilian courts which have convicted nearly 500 terrorists in the same time period.

“Ultimately, this is more than a policy concern – it’s a moral one.

This nation is synonymous with justice and the rule of

law. Our government must live up to the ideals that the American people abide by each and every day. And that starts by closing Guantanamo.”

Since September 11, 2001, 60 federal district courts in 37 states have successfully and safely convicted at least one suspected terrorist. Not one has suffered any form of retaliation. Unlike military commissions, federal courts can try suspects for offenses re-

lated to fraud, immigration status, and illegal possession of firearms and narcotics.

Military commissions have also had trouble prosecuting conspiracy and material support charges, which are routine in federal court.

Federal prisons hold more than 300 individuals convicted of terrorismrelated offenses. None has ever escaped. Of the seven detainees convicted by military commission, only three remain in custody.

Technology is an integral part of everyday life at school and an animated character named "Sammy Smart" is helping Arcadia Unified School District students use computers respectfully, responsibly and safely.

Sammy is the voice of AUP Online, an interactive online curriculum created

by Lersun Development, a company specializing in digital safety education. Students login to Lersun’s AUP Online website and work with Sammy through a series of self-guided and interactive lessons that address using computers at school, making safe and responsible choices when navigating the Internet, and taking responsibility for decisions made.

The program has lessons for all grade levels and is currently being implemented in AUSD’s elementary and middle schools.

At the kindergarten level, Sammy introduces students to basic Internet safety concepts such as what constitutes personal information, the importance of not sharing this information online

and how school technology should be used. The lessons become more robust as students grow older so that the 4th and 5th grade version contains information and activities about not only personal safety online but also cyber bullying and ethical responsibility. In the middle and high school programs, the character becomes Cyber Sam and Samuel B. Safe III respectively and introduces new concepts such as source credibility and attribution, safety when participating on social networking sites and the dangers of sexting and sharing photos and personal information online.

For many years students have been annually required to sign a paper agreement that acknowledges that the teacher has reviewed the District’s acceptable use policy. Documenting this acceptable use agreement and the district’s instruction on internet safety is important for all school district receiving federal e-Rate funding, a program that provides discounts of up to 90 percent of the cost of telecommuni-

cations service and Internet access to eligible schools and libraries. With AUP Online, after completing the required lessons, students electronically sign the Acceptable Use Policy and Lersun then electronically compiles time- and dated documentation of student participation. This gives the school district easy and credible documentation for federal compliance audits.

Because the lessons are self-guided and hosted on a Lersun website, the course requires no teacher training and little support from schools’ technology staff.

Teachers can take students to the computer lab during class or simply assign the course as homework. Students can access the lessons both at school and at home.

Life Remembered Juanita Harris Sept 11, 1943 – May 23, 2013 Juanita Harris, 69, passed away last week after a long courageous fight against bone cancer with an inoperable tumor on her lung.

Harris had worked for Beacon Media (then known as Core Media) newspapers as a typesetter and Legals specialist for several years. More recently, Harris compiled and typed the copy for our Social Editor, Floretta Lauber’s ‘Social Whirl’ column.

Born in Missouri, Harris is survived by her adopted son David Rojas and three grandchildren Kyle, Kaitlin and Devin McNamee.

Harris’ only daughter preceded her in death several years ago.

A memorial is pending but as was her wish, Juanita Harris was cremated at Victor Valley Mortuary in Victorville. For further information please contact David Rojas (559) 719 -7276.

3 EMUHSD schools receive silver medals from U. S. News and World Report U. S. News and World Report, in its issue focusing on America’s best high schools, has awarded silver proficiency medals to South El Monte, Arroyo and Rosemead High Schools.

Nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college and other factors.

The research was based on key principles that a great high school must serve all

its students well, not just those students bound for college, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show that the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

“South El Monte High School is very proud of this accomplishment,” said principal Angie Gonzales.

“We are working hard to meet the needs of all our students.”

Arroyo and Rosemead High School principals Oscar Cisneros and Larry Cecil, respectively,

each expressed pride in his school, staff and students on the accomplishment.

The three high schools were also awarded silver medals last year.

El Monte Union High School District superintendent Nick Salerno expressed his pleasure on the recognition of the three district schools by U.S. News and World Report again this year.

“This award would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff and students,” he said.

Special Olympics law enforcement torch run On Wednesday, June 5, 2013 the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place throughout the Tri-Valley area. Glendale Police Department officers and staff will be running alongside Special Athletes to support the great cause. Officers from LAPD, CHP, and Burbank PD will join Glendale PD as they carry the “Flame of Hope” 60 miles through the San Fernando Valley as part of the Law En-

forcement Torch Run. The Torch Run consists of more than 4,000 officers and Special Olympics athletes running 1,500 miles through 200 communities in Southern California to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Southern California.

Special Olympics Southern California is a nonprofit organization that empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and re-

spected members of society through sports training and competition.

Glendale's 5.5 mile run will be at a pace which accommodates all abilities (11-12 min. mile). Glendale is scheduled to receive the Torch at 1:30 pm from the Burbank Police Department at Glen oaks / Alameda. The run concludes at Colorado and the 2 Freeway when LAPD receives the touch from Glendale.

Sunday, May 19: At approximately 2:07 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for expired registration in the area of Peck Road and Clark Street. The officer observed a fraudulent registration sticker on the vehicle’s license plate.

The 34-year-old Hispanic male was cited, released in the field, and his vehicle was impounded.

Just after 2:50 p.m., an officer responded to First Avenue Salon, 10 North First Avenue, in regards to a theft report.

A female suspect received a hair treatment valued at $250 and left the location without making payment. The suspect is described as Hispanic, approximately 24-years-old, 5’6” tall, 150 lbs., with brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a peach-colored top, blue jeans, and gold sandals. She can be recognized if seen again.

Monday, May 20: Around 2:30 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1200 block of Lovell Avenue in regards to an auto burglary report. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the victim’s rear passenger window and stole her stereo and laptop. No evidence was left behind and no witnesses were located.

Between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) forced open a window to a residence in the 600 block of East Norman Avenue, causing the alarm to activate. The suspect(s) fled prior to the officer’s arrival and the interior of the home appeared undisturbed. No fingerprints were located.

Tuesday, May 21: At about 2:52 p.m., an officer responded to Denny’s, 7 East Huntington Drive, in reference to a disturbance.

The officer discovered an intoxicated subject was unable to care for himself and a records check revealed he had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants. The 35-year-old White male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 6:51 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Sephora at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a theft report. Two 14-year-old Asian female suspects concealed merchandise inside used shopping bags and exited the store without making payment. While in custody of store personnel, one of the suspects cut herself with a razor blade and made suicidal

comments. She was transported to the Arcadia Methodist Hospital for evaluation and treatment. The other suspect was transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking and later released to her grandfather. An investigation revealed the juveniles stole from a total of ten stores.

Wednesday, May 22: At roughly 9:10 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of West Lemon Avenue to conduct follow-up on reports of the location being used as a maternity home.

Upon contact with one of the residents, the officer discovered she was in possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.

The 26-year-old Chinese female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Just after 1:40 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of Sunset Boulevard in regards to a domestic violence report. A female subject hit her husband numerous times in the face and body, resulting in visible injuries.

The 53-year-old Asian female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Thursday, May 23: Around 6:30 a.m., an officer responded to Chevron, 102 East Huntington Drive, in regards to a robbery that had just occurred. The suspect pushed the victim to the ground, took his beer, and fled the location on foot. The 35-year-old White male was located in the 000 block of East La Porte Street, arrested, and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 6:12 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a traffic collision on Santa Clara Street, at Front Street. As party-one exited a driveway, she attempted a right turn onto eastbound Santa Clara Street and collided into a bicyclist traveling westbound. The officer determined the bicyclist caused the collision by traveling in the wrong direction, and he was not wearing a helmet. No injuries were reported.

Friday, May 24: At about 10:19 a.m., an officer responded to the area of Gilpin Way and Live Oak Avenue in regards to a dispute. Upon contact with the suspect, the officer discovered she was under the influence of a controlled substance. The 38-year-old White female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Just after 7:00 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on

a vehicle for an unsecured license plate on Arcadia Avenue at Sunset Avenue.

The officer discovered the passenger was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. Meanwhile, the driver refused to comply with the officer’s instructions and delayed the investigation. A records check revealed the 28-year-old males each had multiple outstanding warrants. They were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Saturday, May 25: Around 1:25 a.m., officers conducting DUI patrol stopped a vehicle for a broken tail light on Main Street at Fourth Avenue in Alhambra. Upon contact with the 35-year-old Hispanic female driver, the officer detected an odor of alcohol emitting from inside the vehicle. An investigation revealed the driver and two passengers were intoxicated. One of the passengers, a 41-year-old Hispanic female, was also in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia while the other passenger, a 37-yearold Hispanic male, had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. All three subjects were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Before 2:45 p.m., an officer was flagged down by an employee at Jiffy Lube, 5 West Huntington Drive, who explained he was just attacked by a customer. The suspect became upset after learning there was a short wait and punched the victim with his left forearm. The suspect fled in a black Chevrolet Suburban and the victim recorded the license plate. The suspect is described as a White male, approximately 45-years-old, 5’7” tall, 240 lbs., wearing a grey t-shirt and blue jeans.

Residential Burglary May 6 at 12:40 p.m., officers responded to an alarm activation at a residence in the 200 block of Bradoaks. When they arrived, they discovered a back window open and the house had been burglarized.

A resident in the area saw two, male Black suspects fleeing the home in a silver Toyota Camry. Arcadia Police Department received notification of the robbery and advised of an incident in Arcadia involving a silver Toyota that occurred approximately an hour earlier. An Arcadia resident had a male and female Black who were driving a silver Toyota Camry knock

on the door. When the resident answered, the subjects appeared surprised someone was home and quickly came up with a request for directions to the 134 Freeway. The resident reported the suspicious incident to police, who responded, but the vehicle was not located. The investigation is continuing.

Fraud / Commercial Burglary - Suspect Arrested May 6 at 3:45 p.m., a female subject entered a business in the 500 block of West Huntington with her 3-year-old daughter. She attempted to make a purchase using fraudulent credit cards she had in her possession, but was detained by store loss prevention personnel. She had been in the store 3 days prior and used the same cards to purchase $720 of merchandise. Officers responded, confirmed the cards in her possession were fraudulent, along with a fraudulent social security card and multiple fake identification cards. She also had a no-bail warrant for her arrest out of San Bernardino for burglary. She was arrested and the Department of Children and Family Services was called to take custody of her daughter.

Commercial Burglary Suspect Arrested May 6 at 8:24 p.m., an officer was dispatched on the report of a burglary at a business in the 700 block of East Huntington. An adult female with her 4-year-old child went into the business. The suspect took a bag and removed the tag, then went throughout the store putting store merchandise inside the bag. She exited the store without paying and was detained. Officers spoke with the suspect and found this was not her first arrest for theft. She was arrested and the Department of Children and Family Ser-

vices was contacted and responded to take custody of the four-year-old child.

Domestic Violence - Suspect Arrested May 6 at 11:42 p.m., a male subject who is on house arrest was at home with his girlfriend. His girlfriend wanted to talk to him, but he wanted to be left alone. She continued to talk to him and he became angry. He then grabbed her, shook her, and head butted her. She ran into the other room and called police. He saw she was using her phone and grabbed the phone and broke it. The police dispatcher was still on the line and heard the male subject yell at the female and the phone went dead. Officers arrived and the subject was arrested.

Missing Child / Runaway Juvenile - Located On May 7 at 6:06 p.m., a 10-year-old male subject was reported missing to police by his family members. The boy was last seen at a relative's home in the 200 block of West Walnut in the City of Monrovia. He has run away several times before and had run away from his family the day before in Pasadena.

An extensive search was conducted by the Monrovia Police Department and neighboring agencies were notified, but the boy was not located.

The boy was actually located at approximately 4:00 a.m. that next morning by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and was taken into custody by the Department of Children and Family Services. Sheriff's deputies contacted him on Rosemead Blvd. in the City of Rosemead and detained him. The boy had taken his grandmother's cell phone and debit card, and had withdrawn money with the card.

Due to the fact that the boy

was not truthful about his identity with the Sheriff's Department, he was not determined to be the missing child from Monrovia until later in the day, when his true identity was discovered.

Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance / Vandalism / Mentally Disturbed Subject May 8 at 6:39 a.m., police received a call reporting a male subject knocking on doors and claiming to be a preacher. He was reportedly acting very odd. Officers arrived and located the subject, who is a known drug user with a long history of contacts with the police department.

The subject was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and he was also charged with vandalism of a window he had damaged at the trailer park where he was located. He was arrested and later released on citation.

Later that day, at 4:11 p.m., a resident in the 400 block of Bradbury called stating a male subject knocked on his door and was acting strange. Officers responded and found the same subject who had been arrested earlier, walking in the street in the 1100 block of Lemon; he was making wildly unrealistic statements. He was detained and was taken to a hospital, where he was held for 72hour mental evaluation.

Commercial Burglary Suspect Arrested May 8 at 3:04 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a business in the 1600 block of South Mountain on the report of a burglary. Store loss prevention had detained a subject who had attempted to take merchandise by hiding it in his waistband. The subject is currently on probation for burglary. He was arrested and taken into to custody.

Reflection: Hastings Ranch Nursery School turns 60

As the bright green leaves return to the trees in my play yard at Hasting Ranch Nursery School and the hot, hot weather creeps into the weekly forecast, I am reminded of how lucky I am to live in this beautiful foothill community. These massive trees that provide the children with shade and innumerable learning experiences were planted some 30 years ago, when I was a student at Hastings Ranch Nursery School. Yes, I am both an alum and a teacher carrying on the great traditions of the school and I am not the only one. Hastings Ranch Nursery School has such a magnetic quality that many of our parents are alumni, the teachers that are working here had their children enrolled here, our board members are alumni, and student volunteers from local high schools call to come in and perform service hours here. This school not only brings the community together but also generations, sharing in the traditions of play based learning, cooperative learning, and the emergent curriculum.

Another amazing thing about this school is that it has been a part of the foothill community for much longer than 30 years; we are celebrating our 60th Anniversary this year. That is no small task for a small, com-

munity preschool. Hastings Ranch Nursery School’s director, Debbie Johnson is at the helm of this soon to be 60 year-old ship and working tirelessly to preserve the traditions of play based learning and the emergent curriculum for the incoming families here. With her 20 years of experience and her membership and associations with the NAEYC, FAEYC, San Gabriel Council of Parent Participation, and California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, Debbie Johnson is the perfect fit for Hastings Ranch Nursery School. She is an active director and mentor for the staff, making daily trips into the classroom to talk with the children, interact with them, and teach.

As a former teacher at Hastings Ranch Nursery School, her passion is the children and they will always be her

first priority.

Monrovia depot project in full swing

By Emani Payne Artist Cha-Rie Tang is currently creating the elaborate artwork for the future Monrovia Gold Line station on the Pasadena-to-Azusa foothill extension. The concept behind the Monrovia station’s artwork named River of Time aims to celebrate "man in harmony with nature" and draws on both the elements of nature and architectural features that are prominent in the small but proud foothill city.

Tangs artwork will include a 7 foot high sculptural rock surrounded by a pool of glass bricks symbolizing ripples of water. As well as a "treasure trove" of Craftsman tiles - many of which were reproductions of tiles gathered from fireplaces, kitchens and bathrooms of community members.

Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz said she was particularly excited about how

the artwork reflects the city of Monrovia's history by connecting with the community's love of Batchelder tiles as well as its love of nature.

"I think (community members) are just going to be in awe of it," Mayor Lutz said, "I think people will stop and stare and look at it and enjoy it; they're not just going to walk through.

They'll want to be a part of it for a while. " "It's just so different for public art to see this kind of quality that's not just out

there it's indigenous to the area,” Lesley Elwood, public art program manager for the Gold Line Construction Authority said.

According to Elwood the total budget for the artwork's fabrication and delivery is $143,000 plus another $15,000 for design, and each city with a stop along the foothill extension had their public art committee decide which artists and concept they wanted at their stop making each one unique to that cities style.

McKinley School principal named Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Jon R. Gundry announced Tuesday the appointment of John M. Albert as principal of McKinley School for the 2013-2014 school year, pending board approval.

Over 1200 students receive a quality education at PUSD’s McKinley School ranging from transitional kindergarten to eighth grade.

“McKinley has a long standing reputation for excellence,” said incoming principal Albert. “I am ecstatic to join the talented team of students, parents, community members, classified staff and teachers.”

Albert joins PUSD from the Capistrano Unified

School District in Orange County, where he most recently served as director of curriculum and instructional support. He was previously principal of Ladera Vista Junior High School, a visual and performing arts magnet school in the Fullerton School District and Washington Middle School in the Vista Unified School District. Mr. Albert has also served as an assistant principal and began his career as a high school social studies teacher.

Pending board approval, Albert will begin working at PUSD July 15.

“John Albert brings experience in instructional leadership to narrow the achievement gap at the secondary school level and a

track record for supporting the integration of technology to develop 21st century skills while fostering a shared vision among stakeholders to benefit all students,” said PUSD Superintendent John R. Gundry.

“I would also like to thank Sharon Lefler and Jennifer Smith for stepping in and serving as an interim principal at McKinley during this past school year.”

Awarded a doctorate in education by the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) May 26, Albert also has a master’s degree in education administration, a secondary education teaching credential in social studies and a Tier II administrative credential from CSUF.

Pasadena Symphony and POPS CEO Paul Jan Zdunek joins neighborhood music school advisory board The Neighborhood Music School (NMS) in Boyle Heights announced today that Paul Jan Zdunek, Chief Executive Officer of the Pasadena Symphony and POPS, has joined the NMS Advisory Board.

"We are very pleased Paul accepted our offer to visit the Neighborhood Music School, take a tour with Bernard Leon our office manager, meet with members of our board of directors and Wendy Kikkert, our

administrator, and accept our offer to be on our honorary Advisory Board. Paul is a leader in music and the arts in Southern California, and has done a tremendous job at enhancing the value of the Pasadena Symphony and POPS as a beloved part of the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley community.

Tom Torlakson announces funding for school construction and modernization State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today that the State Allocation Board (SAB) disbursed more than $519 million for 230 school construction and modernization projects across 92 school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools throughout the state.

“Our schools are community centerpieces and play a key role in preparing young people for the future,” Torlakson said.

“Local districts now have additional resources to bring to bear on construct-

ing and rebuilding schools, which in turn creates jobs and improves our students’ chances for success.”

Torlakson’s Schools of the Future Initiative lays out the framework for “21st century learning” through the construction and modernization of school facilities, utilization of new technology, energy efficiency, and facilities for science and career technology education.

The State Superintendent is one of 10 members of the SAB, which meets monthly to allocate state

matching funds for the construction of new classrooms, the modernization of existing schools, and other programs to improve learning environments, and adopts policies and regulations regarding SAB programs. The funds allocated by the SAB are from voter-approved general obligation bonds that cannot be used for school operational expenses.

Rep. Schiff hosts roundtable with Los Angeles public safety agencies to discuss ways to minimize helicopter noise Rep. Adam Schiff (DBurbank) hosted a roundtable with homeowners and representatives of public safety agencies recently on the issue of helicopter noise in Los Angeles County.

Schiff has introduced the Los Angeles Residential Helicopter Noise Relief Act (H.R. 456), which would require the FAA to set regulations relating to flight paths and altitudes for helicopter flights in Los Angeles County. The bill exempts operations related to emergency, law enforcement or military activities, and the purpose of today's roundtable was to explore voluntary measures these agencies could undertake to reduce noise in nonemergency situations.

“Since this legislation was introduced in 2011, we have been engaged in a thoughtful conversation with all of the stakeholders – home owners associations, helicopter pilots, news agencies and other community groups – which has resulted in an FAA study and a sub-

sequent report that we expect to be issued this week,” said Rep. Schiff. “There is little doubt that police, first responders and other public safety helicopters comprise a portion of helicopter noise in residential communities across Los Angeles County, and while these agencies, of necessity are excluded from the bill, we will be working with them to reduce their contribution to the noise when doing so would not compromise their vital operations. These agencies can contribute to the solution as well, and it’s my hope that today’s roundtable will be the first of many steps to help homeowners across Los Angeles get a little peace and quiet from helicopter noise.”

The roundtable provided an opportunity for homeowners to discuss with the public safety agencies the practices they find most disruptive and intrusive. The free flowing conversation allowed members of the Los Angeles Area Helicopter Noise Coalition (LAAHNC)

to also offer suggestions for how the public safety agencies could improve their interaction with the communities they fly above and minimize the disturbances on those communities. The public safety agencies – with representatives from Los Angeles Police Department, Glendale and Burbank police departments, Los Angeles City Fire, LA County Fire, Los Angeles County Sheriffs, California Highway Patrol, the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army – had the opportunity to respond to the concerns and requests of the homeowners.

This roundtable was an important first step in strengthening the homeowners’ and the public safety agencies’ understanding on this critical issue. Hopefully, it will lay the foundation for a continued dialogue and feedback that will ensure improved relations and interactions between the public safety agencies and the communities they serve.
