They Call It Puppy Love Susan McManigal and Dave Peterson wait patiently with 5-month-old German Shepherd ‘Odin’, at My Pet Garden’s 5th Anniversary party held last weekend in Pasadena. The trip to visit the pet store was one of Oden’s very first outings in which he encountered lots of other dogs. Odin passed with flying colors according to his mom, Susan McManigal who was getting a rather tender kiss from her new puppy as he waited in line for a professional animal photographer to capture his personality. McManigal owns and operates the French Hand Laundry on South Lake in Pasadena and Peterson is a local businessman with a passion for pooches, especially Odin who will only allow his mom to buy his dog food at My Pet Garden. My Pet Garden, which specializes in healthy foods for our four-legged friends is located at 2245 East Colorado Boulevard Pasadena (626) 4491600. -Photo by Terry Miller
Portantino’s Human TraffickingTattoo Removal Bill – AB1956 Signed by Governor Governor Brown has signed into law Assemblymember Anthony Portantino’s bill to help young people who have been forced into prostitution and branded get a fresh start. AB 1956 expands the California Voluntary Tattoo Removal Program to provide free tattoo removal for young people ages 14 to 24 who have been forced into prostitution and then take steps to turn their lives around. “It’s not unusual to find pimps marking girls and women with “brands”
or tattoos to indicate they are property or ownership; sending a message to the girl that she is in essence, a slave. When these young women break free, begin a new life by attending school or looking for work, the brands make it that much harder for the girls to break out of “the life”. “When one of my interns brought it to my attention that a current federal program only removed tattoos from former gang members but left out the women forced into prostitution, I
was shocked and angered,” stated Assemblymember Portantino. F“There is no reason to have young women who now attend school and are searching for employment not have the same program available as gang members. This bill brings fairness, a second chance and self-respect for young girls who are trying to turn the corner in their lives. I’m very pleased with my staff for bringing this to me and thankful for Governor Brown’s signature,” commented Portantino.
