YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley Says Enough to Violence
Temple Citians Eligible for Windstorm Damage Tax Relief Governor Jerry Brown recently signed into law SB 1544 to provide tax relief to individuals and businesses who suffered damages as a result of last November’s windstorm. The unprecedented windstorm blew through much of the San Gabriel Valley toppling trees, downing power lines, damaging homes and vehicles, and knocking out electricity for over 350,000 Southern California Edison customers. Clean-up costs for Los Angeles County topped $17 million, while damage assessments in Temple City were estimated in the millions. Existing federal and state law allows taxpayers to deduct disaster losses in the year they occur (or for a prior year by filing an amended return), but only when the President declares the event a disaster. While the damage from the windstorms was significant enough for the Governor to declare a State of Emergency for the region, it was just shy of the threshold necessary for the President to
designate it as a disaster area. SB 1544, authored by Senator Ed Hernandez (DWest Covina), amends state law to allow taxpayers who suffered damages from the 2011 windstorm to carry forward 100 percent of their uninsured losses for 20 years, and claim losses for 2011 by filing an amended return. The legislation gives affected residents and businesses the same tax relief that has been afforded other Californians afflicted by declared emergencies. To paraphrase an example published by the Pasadena Star News, if a market lost $1,000 in spoiled milk due to the windstorm, that business could now claim that $1,000 and thus lower their tax liability. If the business owner already filed tax returns, they could amend them and get a refund for the difference. For more information, call Senator Hernandez’s West Covina office at (626) 430-2499. For technical assistance on tax return preparation, contact the Franchise Tax Board at (800) 852-5711.
Week without Violence Slated for Oct. 15 - Oct. 21 Violence is plaguing our country; it’s in our homes, schools and in our communities. The YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley wants residents to speak out during the Annual YWCA Week Without Violence, October 15th through 21st.
