The year was 1984 when the iconic and popular song “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler blared across the radio waves. Sung as the original soundtrack for the movie “Footloose”, the song became the anthem for anyone looking for that everelusive hero in their lives. Tyler’s raspy voice belted out the lyrics, “Where have all the good men gone?” and “He’s got to be strong, and he’s got to be fast, and he’s got to be fresh from the fight!”

Well, for those who are looking for their own “hero”, they need to look no further than Stephen Gustafson, otherwise known as “The Household Hero”. Gustafson chose this song as his theme song to not only pump himself up, but also to answer the question, “Where have all the good men gone”? With unsavory workers out there who take advantage of others, those who desperately need

help around their homes need someone they can trust.

Someone who takes their calls, who shows up on time, who is honest in his dealings, who does the job right ~ and who is straightforward enough to say when he can’t.

Gustafson is all these things, and more.

If you need the help of this Household Hero, just give him a call. Perhaps you need a screen replaced, a curtain rod installed, a leaky faucet repaired, a handrail secured, a broken door jamb fixed, and beyond! If you ask, The Household Hero will give you an honest assessment of the cost and feasibility of the project, and then, if it can be done, he will do it. It’s that simple. No job is too small for this twenty-year carpenter, former professional window installer and genuine “Jackof-all-Trades.”

Today, Gustafson does more than check things off

your to-do list; he can also protect your home/property with the use of a completely natural, non-toxic, familyfriendly pest control treatment ~ for a one-time job or an ongoing commitment. As an avid outdoorsman who loves nature but hates pesky insects, Gustafson got a specialized license that qualifies him to offer professional insect control using a completely natural and environmentally-safe solution.

He will come to your home and, after a free consultation, will get right to work spraying this cedar-oil based product inside and outside of your house. Unlike its toxic counterparts, NO wait time is necessary following this process. You don’t need to close your windows. It is completely harmless to people, plants, pets, and bugs such as bees and butterflies (it has to do with the way they breathe!) What it does do is kill spiders, fleas, mosquitos, and other creepycrawly insects that plague homeowners in our region of the country.

Escale Watch

The Louis Vuitton Escale Time Zone watch features the world’s 24 time zones. Escale (“stopover” in French) was created to appeal to the world traveler not only with the time zones, but with the colorful flags of the world represented on the watch’s face. The images of the flags also link the contemporary wristwatches to earlier days of Louis Vuitton, when travelers could customize their LV luggage with flags of the countries where they traveled.

This watch was introduced in 2010, and there is still an Escale line. Louis Vuitton’s annual designs include a resort collection also called Escale.

Q:Ihave a pair of gold-tone costume jewelry earrings that I love even though they are not real gold. A small green spot has appeared on each one where the post attaches. Can the spots be removed? Are the earrings safe to wear?

A:Thegreen spots, called verdigris, are a patina that can form on copper, bronze, brass and gold or silver plate. You can clean it off your earrings and continue wearing them. You can try removing small spots with a toothpick, soft-bristled toothbrush, pencil eraser or microfiber cloth. If you need something stronger, mix a small amount of dishwashing detergent with warm water and use this to clean your jewelry. If your earrings don’t have pearls or foil-backed rhinestones, you can dilute white vinegar or lemon juice in water, soak a cotton ball in the solution, and hold it to the green spot. Or apply ketchup to the spot; it is acidic, and its thick consistency means it won’t run like a liquid. But be careful when you use acids to clean jewelry! They can discolor gold-tone metals, damage pearls (both real and fake) and foilbacked stones, and weaken some glues. To keep verdigris from forming, store your pieces separately, avoid exposing them to moisture, oils and cosmetics, and make sure your skin is clean and dry when you wear them.

TIP: Use eyeglass-cleaning tissues to clean the glass on small pictures.

Alternatively, a dollop of salsa, hummus or plain Greek yogurt adds variety.

Beans or Legumes: Add in 1/2 cup cooked beans or legumes. Packed with protein and fiber, dry beans are most affordable, but canned beans are quick and easy. Try chickpeas, great northern beans, black beans or lentils.

Economical Meal Prep Made Easy With Grain Bowls

People often ask me about suggestions for inexpensive meal prep ideas. I have two words: grain bowls.

But what are grain bowls, exactly?

Grain bowls are a complete meal composed of a grain base, greens, protein, veggies and interesting toppings all arranged in a way that’s visually appealing.

Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, grain bowls are an economical way to prepare quick, easy and nutritious meals. Preparing the components in advance assures a virtually endless number of combinations to ensure you’ll never get tired of eating the same ol’ grain bowl.

Here’s the blueprint to making great grain bowls:

Greens: Start with a giant handful of greens. Spinach, kale, arugula and mixed spring greens are favorites, but any leafy green works.

Grains: Add 1/2 to 1 cup cooked whole grains to your salad foundation. Any whole grain you like, such as brown rice, quinoa, wheat berries, barley or farro. You can cook up a batch of different grains each week for effortless variety.

Dressing: Dress the grains and greens before you add the other goodies, so the dressing is evenly distributed throughout the whole bowl. A squeeze of lemon or simple vinaigrette dressing is perfect, or use your favorite bottled salad dressing.

Proteins: While beans and grains offer complete protein, boost your bowl by adding hardboiled eggs, sliced deli meats, tuna, chicken, steak, anything you desire. What a perfect use for leftovers!

Veggies and Fruits: Top your bowl with the crunch and color of chopped veggies and fruits. For veggies, think of tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms, carrots, you name it! Don’t forget roasted and cooked veggies, too — like sweet potatoes, caramelized Brussels sprouts, roast butternut squash. Many bowls benefit from a juicy burst of fruity sweetness, especially breakfast bowls. Enjoy chopped apple, pear, citrus, berries, grapes.

cooked quinoa provides 8 grams of protein. Unlike some plant proteins, quinoa is a complete protein, meaning that it contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t make on their own.

QUICK QUINOA

Yield: 1 1/2 cups

Time: 27 minutes

1 cup quinoa

1 3/4 cups water or vegetable broth

1/4 teaspoon salt

Rinse the quinoa under cold running water in a fine mesh strainer for 1-2 minutes. This helps remove any bitterness from the quinoa. In a medium saucepan, combine the quinoa and water or broth. Add a pinch of salt, if desired.

Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat to low and cover with a lid. Simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the quinoa sit, covered, for 10 more minutes.

Fluff the quinoa with a fork and serve.

The easiest way to cook other grains? Boil them like pasta. (I’m a rebel, I know.) Simmer the grains in a good amount of well-salted water, periodically tasting as they cook until they are the right texture, al dente. Then drain them in a fine-mesh strainer.

Now, go mix and match those greens, grains and goodies! See you next week! ***

Healthy Fats: For flavor, texture and staying power, add healthy fats to your bowls. Ingredients like nuts, seeds, any kind of cheese and, of course, avocado belong everywhere!

My secret weapon for cheap and easy grain bowls is quinoa. One cup

The Mini but Mighty Shamrock-Shaped Solution for Lawn

FAMILY FEATURES

That lush, green lawn most strive for is struggling to survive as our climate experiences “weather whiplash,” meaning abrupt swings in weather conditions from one extreme to another. Last season, drought conditions were so dire in California billboards shouted, “Brown is the New Green.” This season, despite early, extreme flooding in California, evidence suggests the length and depth of droughts will increase in upcoming years, becoming more frequent and severe.

Outdoor water usage is still astronomical, synthetic chemical use is ever-present and fuel-guzzling lawn blowers and mowers sing all summer. Traditional lawn maintenance is expensive, unnatural, untenable and increases greenhouse gasses, wastes water, pollutes ecosystems and reduces biodiversity.

Average American families use 320 gallons of water daily, about 30% outdoors, with more than half devoted to watering lawns and gardens, according to the EPA. Nationwide, landscape irrigation is estimated at almost one-third of all residential water usage, totaling nearly 9 billion gallons daily.

Gas-powered lawn mowers spew pollutants that can cause planetwarming gases, contributing to climate crisis and drought. According to the EPA, gas-powered lawn equipment releases more than 22 million tons of CO2 emissions and estimates over 17 million gallons of gasoline are spilled refueling lawn equipment; that’s more than all oil spilled by Exxon Valdez.

There are many issues causing harm to environmental health, from the ridiculous, like billionaires taking 17-minute flights in private jets, producing 2 tons of CO2 emissions, to everyday lawn care wasting staggering amounts of water for aesthetics while polluting the environment through run-off and toxic emissions.

It’s time to take a page from the past; sowing clover seed can create a great-looking, water-efficient, sustainable lawn. Decades ago, clover was standard in lawn seed mixes. Then agricultural chemical companies created herbicides to rid lawns of broadleaf plants, killing everything but grass, clovers included, branding them weeds.

“Today, clover is making a comeback,” said Troy Hake, president and owner of Outsidepride.com, offering drought-tolerant grasses, clovers, wildflower seeds and more. “Tik Tok’s #cloverlawn has over

65 million views, evidencing it’s time for sustainable options, like adding ‘miniclover’ or replacing lawns with it. Miniclover (trifolium repens), is one-third to half the size of white Dutch clover, only grows 4-6 inches and produces a thick, carpet-like look that blends well with turf. Less expensive than grass seed, it’s a natural solution for self-sustaining, low-maintenance lawns that look beautiful and help eliminate the need for fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and weekly mowing. It’s healthier for people, pets, soil and waterways. You can’t go wrong with it.”

There’s nothing you can do about those 17-minute private jet flights. However, anyone with a lawn can add-in miniclover and redefine what sustainable lawns and responsible lawn care looks like. Sales of miniclover rose dramatically last season, surely an indicator that this lawn renovation trend was well-received and continues to grow.

Benefits:

Nitrogen fixer. Miniclover takes nitrogen from the air and “fixes” it in soil, eliminating the need to apply nitrogen, keeping lawns green and growing while adding natural nitrogen to surrounding soil.

Drought tolerant. Miniclover is droughttolerant and can stay green all summer with minimal watering.

Deters bugs. Grubs that feed on grass roots will not eat miniclover, and adult beetles and bugs are deterred from laying eggs in it.

Crowds out weeds. Miniclover is evenly dispersed via stolons (stems grow horizontally along the ground), crowding out weeds, preventing new weeds and controlling erosion.

Low-to-no maintenance. You can mow miniclover – the more it’s cut, the smaller the leaf size – or let it grow. Miniclover only

blooms once in summer, providing bees with nectar, or mowing will prevent blooming. Thrives in sun to partial shade. Miniclover does well in partial shade that receives some direct sunshine daily.

Stands up to soil and subsoil compaction. Immune to “dog patches.” Dog urine discolors lawns, but miniclover stays green and lush.

Feels soft and springy on bare feet and looks like ordered whimsy.

So... what’s not to like?

Protecting Your Items — and the Earth — When Moving

StatePoint

Moving is a big job – and it can be a wasteful one, too, considering all of the packing material required. Make moving more sustainable with these eco-friendly tips:

Space Saving: Using thinner sustainable wrapping to secure your breakables avoids the need for excess storage and boxes. Flourish Brand Honeycomb Cushion Wrap, made with 40% recycled content, offers a customizable way to pack boxes efficiently. The die-cut honeycomb stretches easily with interlocking paper that attaches to itself, so no tape is needed. Once you unpack, the paper can be directly recycled, or stored to be reused.

Folding In: Instead of using tape, fold your box tops in an interlocked, neat manner. They’ll stack up easily inside your

vehicle, maximizing packing space, plus you won’t need to use any additional materials. Unpack your items without tearing or ripping your box, then recycle or fold it flat to store for future use.

Stacking Up: Ensure your plates and serving ware stay scratch-free by using a protective layer between each item. Made of recycled content, Flourish Brand 100% Recycled Kraft Paper provides lasting security for traveling to your new home.

Blanketed: Oversized or uniquely shaped home décor can be exceptionally fragile and isn’t always easy to squeeze into standard storage containers. When packing your vehicle, incorporate padding by wrapping these items in spare blankets, comforters or oversized towels. You’ll minimize the risk of damage to the items and have zero waste.

Rainbow Brite

If you follow Bruneau and Co on social media, you may remember in December Kev and I took a quick day trip to North Carolina to pick up an epic collection. We didn’t spoil the surprise then, but I am here now to tell you we picked up not just any collection, but the world’s largest collection of Rainbow Brite toys and memorabilia!

Right now, two thoughts might be crossing your mind. The first might be “How does Travis know it’s the largest collection?” The answer is because this single owner collection, in its entirety, comes from the Rainbow Land Museum (formerly located in Apex, North Carolina), which was completely dedicated to Rainbow Brite collectibles. You can actually watch a virtual tour of the museum from right before it closed on YouTube. Thousands and thousands of Rainbow Brite toys, books, videos, decorations and more once filled the property – and now all that is in Cranston, Rhode Island with us awaiting auction!

The second thought crossing your mind right now might be “Who is Rainbow Brite???” Unless you were

a little girl growing up in the 1980’s, there is a chance you are not too familiar with her or the toy line. But that’s okay – this article is here to inform!

Like most popular toy lines, Rainbow Brite’s story began with an animated series in 1984. The premise of

the tv show and the movies that followed was Rainbow Brite and her friends (known as Color Kids) lived in a magical kingdom called Rainbow Land where all colors were created. They would then fill our world with color and defend it against gloomy grey villains so our hearts would always be filled with hope and happiness – sweet, right? Also like most popular toy lines in the 1980s, Rainbow Brite and friends got an early 2000s reboot, so there are items in this collection from both generations of toys and merchandise. As you can imagine, Rainbow Brite is recognizable for her rainbow attire, and this toy collection is certainly colorful!

While not everyone may remember Rainbow Brite, during her heyday she was a fan favorite, and looking through these cool vintage toys does pull at those nostalgic heartstrings. We have a 40 year old woman in the office at Bruneau and Co who showed more excitement over these colorful toys than she does for fine jewelry. It just goes to show childhood memories (especially happy ones) can be the driving force for collectors well into adulthood!

19 States have passed resolutions to call for a CoS for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments to consider Federal Term Limits, Impose Federal Fiscal restraints, and to Reduce the size and power of the federal government. The RI House of Representatives introduced HR 5188 to join with the other 19 States to call for a Convention of States. You can learn more and help by going to conventionofstates.com and join more than 4,000 other Rhode Islanders that have signed the national petition to call for a Convention of States.

CoS Action team in RI is just getting started. We successfully had the resolution introduced in 2023. We are looking to grow and do our part to reign in our Federal Government. The RI team is active and preparing for round two in the next legislative session to join the call.
