High Doses of Vitamins Lead to Vitamin Toxicity

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with vitamin D toxicity, according to the blood work from a month ago — my result was 122 ng/mL. I was taking high doses of vitamin D3 in pill form (15,000 IU a day for three years) bought from a drugstore. I have stopped taking it, but I need to know how long it will take to have a normal amount in my body. (Weeks, months?) Can you shed any light on this question? I would like to take it again when my level comes down, but in a lower amount. Also, by any chance, would the high amount of D3 in my system have any correlation to a diagnosis of stenosis of the aortic valve? — C.I.

ANSWER: Vitamin D toxicity is not common. I have seen one case in my career requiring hospitalization, due to a very high elevation of the blood calcium level. Vitamin D increases absorption of calcium from food through the intestines.

In addition, calcium can come out of bones in people with very high levels of vitamin D. With high vitamin D levels, calcium levels can also become dangerously high. Common symptoms of very high calcium levels include constipation, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness, kidney stones, and neurological symptoms, including poor concentration and fatigue. These symptoms tend to happen at levels higher than yours, above 150 ng/mL. Years of high calcium levels can absolutely cause existing heart valve disease to worsen quickly.

In cases of acute intoxication from vitamin D, available treatments include steroids and pamidronate (an

injectable medicine similar to alendronate and other drugs used to treat osteoporosis), which can quickly bring the calcium levels back down to normal. Without this kind of intervention, a vitamin D level will still come down on its own, only more gradually. Vitamin D3 is removed slowly from the body, because it can go into fat tissue. It takes about two months for half the excess to be removed from the body, but because the active forms are removed more quickly, toxicity from excess vitamin D3 usually only lasts for weeks, not months. Still, you are likely not to need any vitamin D for many months, and if you do take it again, do not exceed the safe dose of 5,000 IU a day. I recommend you also get your blood levels tested. Recent studies have questioned the benefit of supplemental vitamin D for most people, although some people, such as those with osteoporosis and low vitamin D levels, probably still benefit.

I’m very glad you wrote. Many people still don’t know that excess of some vitamins can occasionally be dangerous. Vitamin A is the other vitamin where high levels can be very dangerous.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 67-year-old female who has been unable to tolerate both liquid and pill forms of colonoscopy preparations. Therefore, my gastroenterologist has been unable to complete a colonoscopy on me. What are my other options? — F.K.

ANSWER: I would consider an alternate form of colon cancer screening. Home stool tests look for blood and DNA for colon cancer, or both. The data on Cologuard (a commonly available brand) show that it isn’t quite as good as a colonoscopy, but much better than not receiving a screening. However, if the result is positive, you will certainly need additional testing, which calls for preparation, possibly requiring you to get the preparation done under supervision.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

small amounts of some more expensive ingredients. This is where I buy ground flaxseed, chia seeds, dried fruits, quinoa and honey. Also, this is a very forgiving recipe for using substitutions. No quinoa? No problem. Swap in what you have like nuts, more dried fruit, even add an egg if you like.

Healthy Little Muffins Pack Big Nutrition

Are you familiar with Aussie Bites?

I first learned about them at Costco, where a sample made me a fan in one bite. These delectable little mini muffins pack big nutrition in a small package.

The main ingredient is whole grain rolled oats, and they’re filled with superfoods like chia seeds, flaxseed, dried fruits, sunflower seeds, coconut, quinoa, honey and more. These nutritious bites are a great source of plant-based protein, fiber, healthy fatty acids and minerals. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which boost the immune system and help improve brain function. Pretty cool, right?

It’s not often you find a snack that’s both delicious and nutritious. There’s only one thing I don’t like about them, and that’s the price. Depending on where you buy them, these tiny treats can be up to a dollar each. Yikes!

So, I decided to make them myself, and so can you. Making them yourself not only saves money, but it also means having complete control of the ingredients you choose to put in them. This copycat recipe of Costco Aussie Bites is gluten-free, and free of eggs and peanuts, which are common allergens. They can easily be made vegan and/or dairy-free.

For maximum savings, I recommend utilizing the bulk foods section of your grocery store to purchase

But first! Why are these called Aussie Bites? They’re not even from Australia! They’re made in California. Turns out they’re an Americanization of the Anzac Biscuit recipe. This cookie was popular in World War I care packages that wives and mothers sent to soldiers of the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), since they could be made without eggs, and they kept well on the long overseas voyage to Europe. Now you know.

1/4 cup quinoa, cooked or uncooked

2 tablespoons chia seeds

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 cup honey or pure maple syrup

1/4 cup butter or coconut oil, melted 1/4 cup canola oil or other vegetable oil

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, optional Preheat the oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 24-count mini muffin pan. Place 1 cup of the rolled oats in a food processor and process for about 1 minute, until the oats are ground into oat flour. Add the remaining 3/4 cup rolled oats, sugar, apricots, raisins, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, coconut, quinoa, chia seeds and baking soda to the food processor. Pulse until the apricots and raisins are in small pieces. Add the honey, melted butter, canola oil and vanilla extract. Pulse until just combined. The batter will be like a stiff oatmeal cookie batter. Using rounded tablespoons, divide the batter among the prepared muffin cups. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown. Cool in the pan on a wire cooling rack. When completely cooled, remove the muffins from the pan and store in an airtight container for four to five days or freeze for up to six months. You’ll love having Aussie Bites as a quick breakfast or snack any time of the day.

• On March 7, 161 A.D., Marcus Aurelius became emperor of Rome at the age of 39, after the death of his predecessor, Antoninus Pius, and after patiently waiting more than 20 years to assume that role. He was extremely popular, and his reign would later be recalled as a ā€œgolden age.ā€

• On March 9, 1562, kissing in public was banned in Naples, Italy, and actually punishable by death, but not for reasons of morality. Rather, it was part of an effort to halt the spread of a plague throughout Europe. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the legislation failed to achieve its goal.

• On March 8, 1941, Hugh Mulcahy, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, gained national attention when he became the first major league baseball player to be drafted into the Army. He continued to pitch during his service, which lasted for four years, before he returned to his old team.

• On March 10, 1988, Prince Charles narrowly escaped death from an avalanche while skiing at a Swiss resort. Sadly, though he managed to help dig out the body of his friend Major Hugh Lindsay, a former aid to the Queen, Lindsay was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. Diana, Princess of Wales, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, had accompanied Prince Charles on the trip but were not skiing when the avalanche occurred.

She'll need to repay the $416,000 that she stole (not likely to happen), but there's no jail sentence, only a year of home con nement, because the perp in this case is now 76 years old.

During all those years she continued to send in fraudulent paperwork while impersonating her mother — who died in 1973 — and continued to collect the money. Yes, when her mother died she had to take in and raise her younger siblings, so it’s possibly understandable that she assumed she could take the money that had been meant for her mother. But eventually those children grew up and were no longer minors living at home.

Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these ve facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.

1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely tra c patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

West Warwick: 4 lots selling as one package, utilities available, close to Rt. 95, schools, call for details, $49,900

can nd and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.

Surely someone could have done the math. If the mother was X years old when she started collecting the widow benets, what were the odds she was still living 20 years, 30 years or 40 years later? Couldn't someone have asked for veri cation? Or gone to the door? Just receiving handwritten forms over the years doesn't seem like much of an e ort to safeguard the funds that are sent out. at $416,000 (that they'll likely never see again) is a lot of money.

2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the ā€œcarrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.ā€ at means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, ammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

She’ll need to repay the $416,000 that she stole (not likely to happen), but there’s no jail sentence, only a year of home confinement, because the perp in this case is now 76 years old.

3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the ā€œNo-Zone.ā€ You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you

5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more con dent knowing there is a company that o ers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

The story of PEZ begins with Eduard Haas III in Vienna Austria in 1927. Believe it or not, he developed these fun candies as an aid to quit tobacco use. The very name PEZ is an abbreviation of ā€œPfefferminz,ā€ the German word for peppermint, and of course that was their original flavor.

The PEZ peppermints were originally round ā€œdropsā€ and available in rolls or pocket sized tins, but as they grew in popularity around Europe through the 30s and their shape evolved into the familiar brick we see today. In the late 1940s, Oscar Uxa patented the small mechanical PEZ dispenser. Called a ā€œRegularā€ to look like a cigarette lighter and in 1949 they were introduced to the public. Obviously, the idea for these pocket-sized PEZ dispensers was a big hit!

After 1952 PEZ made its way to the United States and the creativity with both the dispensers and the candy flavors took

off. id you know chlorophyll, coffee, and flowers were all flavors n a brilliant move, started making cute toy-like dispensers to increase the appeal to children. By 1973 PEZ was so popular in the states they opened a manufacturing plant a few hours away in Orange, Connecticut. In addition to custom characters, the dispensers started featuring the three dimensional heads of licensed characters in pop culture, like Popeye, along with historical figures like etsy oss.

From the 1970s and beyond, folks loved PEZ not only for the candy but for the variety dispensers they came with, and the desire to collect them grew. As we all know, pop culture has a direct effect on collectability, and the incorporation of fan favorite characters from Disney, DC Comics, Warner Bros., and Marvel attracted collectors of all ages. Today, PEZ is available in over countries around the world, and you can find conventions throughout the year in different cities; There is even a PEZ visitors center you can visit in Orange, Connecticut, home of the largest PEZ memorabilia on display anywhere!

If you’re wondering what PEZ dispensers (if any) are valu-

able, don’t worry; I’m here to give you the scoop on that too. The ones that would bring in the biggest bucks are only a few of a kind: those include the ā€œPolitical Donkeyā€ (one of which belonged to JFK) and ā€œPolitical Elephantā€ from 1961. Their estimates are over $10,000 each. Legend has it there is also an extremely rare variant from the 1978 PEZ Animals series where the Panther has green eyes and a black nose instead of the regular yellow eyes and pink nose. f you can find one of those, you’d be looking at an estimated value of $4,000. Another cool one to keep an eye out for is the 1972 Mr. Potato Head-like ā€œMake-A-Faceā€ dispenser. As the name implies, you could actually build custom faces for your PEZ dispenser with tiny accessories they provided. If you happen to have one of these sealed in its box with all its pieces intact, you’d be looking at a value over $3,000.

What To Ask When Hiring A Contractor

(NAPS)—With record-high real estate prices, a growing number of homeowners are remodeling or renovating their existing homes rather than buying new. Increased demand and continued supply chain issues, however, have led to delays in getting quotes, uncertainties in the availability of materials, rising costs and an increase in homeowner frustration.

Whether you’re looking at a new roof or siding, adding a deck, upgrading windows or insulation, you want to nd a contractor who gets it right on the rst try (and can meet today’s fast-turn demand).

What To Ask

To help, here are three important questions to ask potential contractors so you can nd the right resource in a challenging environment:

1.ā€œDo I need to meet with you in person to get a quote?ā€

Contractors have followed the same manual transaction processes for decades. But home visits with pad-andpaper estimating is outdated, especially with digital-savvy homeowners.

Today, roo ng, fencing and even siding companies can provide a preliminary quote without sending representatives to your house. Satellite measurements and a quick phone call are all you need to understand basic pricing and inventory availability for shingles, siding or lumber. Digital sales platforms help homeowners quickly compare contractors and reduce the time to get multiple estimates.

2.ā€œHow soon can you start?ā€

How quickly a contractor can begin depends on pricing and availability of labor and materials. Be wary of contrac-

tors who o er services for unbelievably low prices—it’s safer to pay more for a premium, professional job than take a gamble on a risky contractor.

Top contractors will prepare a digital estimate, taking current pricing into account. Using dynamic tools, your contractor should be able to make real-time changes to estimates and contracts to show how the materials selected will in uence the schedule and cost. Similarly, such contractors will have access to real-time inventory via a mobile device so you can choose products, such as shingles, that are actually available, reducing delays.

3.ā€œHow do you handle changes?ā€ is is another area where a contractor using a digital sales platform can add value. By plugging in di erent options, your contractor should be able to tell you exactly how changes will a ect cost and timing. No need to wait days for a return phone call—using digital documents means a revised quote and contract can be sent quickly, helping to keep projects moving.

CAPTION: The appeal of this Lucite crystal clear. It sold for $531 at New Auction Galleries.

Lucite

It’s essential for designers to stay on the cutting edge of fashion, which often means finding innovative uses for new materials. Lucite, a clear acrylic resin made by DuPont, was available for commercial use by 1937. By the 1960s, it was used in furniture. Designers often added accents made of smooth, reflective materials like chrome or brass or upholstered their pieces with bright, colorful fabric. Another way to decorate Lucite pieces involved enclosing decorations, such as flowers, in the resin. The clear, shiny material made designs — and the rooms they furnished — look lighter. Some Lucite pieces were made in unusual shapes and styles. Others were more conventional, like this mid-century steamer trunk, which sold at New Orleans Auction Galleries for $531. This may have an advantage over typical wooden or leather trunks: The clear material means you don’t have to open it to see what’s inside!

Q:What is the difference between cut glass and pressed glass? Which is more valuable?

A:Cut glass is an ancient technique that was revived in Europe in the 1500s. Cut and engraved designs added luster to the glass and helped hide flaws like bubbles. Moldblown glass used easier and cheaper techniques to imitate cut glass. The mechanical glass press was invented in the 1820s, making production even simpler and less expensive. To tell the difference between cut glass and pressed glass, remember the three Ls: look, lift and listen. Cut glass designs have sharp edges, so they sparkle more than pressed glass, which has rounded edges. When you pick up a cut glass item, it will feel heavier than a similar piece of pressed glass. Tap your finger against a piece of cut glass and it will ring with more clarity than pressed glass. Cut glass is usually more expensive than pressed glass, but current prices vary from under $20 to thousands of dollars. Cut glass with a

signature or famous manufacturer like Baccarat or Waterford tends to sell for higher prices. Embellishments such as silver mounts or colored glass can further increase the price.

Stay Safe As You Get Back Outside

(NAPS)—Spring is coming, and as we get out our lawn mowers and other outdoor power equipment from storage to work in our yards, businesses and other green spaces, it’s important to put safe practices in place.

ā€œ ink safety rst,ā€ says Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing outdoor power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf car and personal transport vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. ā€œWe’re all eager to get back outside in the spring weather but I can’t stress enough to read your owner’s manuals before starting up any equipment—especially your lawn mower.ā€

OPEI o ers these tips to get your outdoor power equipment ready, especially mowers:

Know not all lawn mowers are the same. Whether your mower is a garden tractor, zero-turn mower or other, it has a unique design, requirements, weight classi cation, and other di erences that impact how to use it safely. e newest machines have the latest safety standards.

Know your speci c machine. Many mowers may look similar but the technology is ever evolving, with evolving safety systems. ey vary in design, power supply, performance, operating parameters, and more. Your manufacturer-supplied owner’s manual will guide you in these di erences. Read your owner’s manual.

When using mowers on slopes follow the manufacturer’s guidance to the letter. Do not disable or alter manufacturer-installed safety equipment.

Walk your yard before mowing. Slopes, wet grass and weather may impact the equipment’s performance, as well as safe handling procedures. Pick up sticks and limbs that may have fallen to the ground over the winter and any loose objects that could be hit by a mower. Inspect trees for damaged limbs

that may get in your way when mowing. Look over equipment before use. Check the air lter, oil level and gasoline tank. Watch for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take your equipment to a quali ed service representative. Check to be sure that you have the appropriate, manufacturer-recommended batteries, if needed.

Protect your power. Use only E10 or less fuel in gasoline-powered outdoor power equipment if it is not designed for higher ethanol blends. Add a fuel stabilizer if you don’t use up all the fuel in the tank right away. Burn o any fuel before storing the mower more than 30 days. Also, for battery-powered equipment, only use battery packs speci ed by the manufacturer. Follow all charging instructions as outlined in the owner’s manual. Be sure to store fuel and batteries safely. Keep batteries away from other metal objects, store them in a climate-controlled area, and never stack batteries.

Keep children and pets away from machines during operation.

Keep your mower clean. It will run more e ciently and last longer. Always remove dirt, oil or grass before using and storing, and store equipment in a dry place, avoiding damp or wet environments.

Should I Buy or Rent a Home?

If you’re feeling stressed about rising rents and interest rates, you are not alone. Most American renters say their rents increased in the past 12 months, and for many, their wage gains didn’t keep pace. In addition, mortgage rates have reached a two-decade high.

This means that for those in the market to rent or buy a home, there is a lot to consider. According to Freddie Mac, deciding whether to rent or buy depends on your financial situation, future plans and lifestyle. You should also carefully assess the benefits and financial commitments that come with each option.

Why Buy?

If you plan to stay in your home for at least five to seven years, buying can make financial sense. omeowners may be eligible for certain ta benefits, and increases in home equity are important to building long-term financial independence. lus, for those with a fi ed-rate mortgage, stable monthly payments provide important predictability when creating a budget. Another benefit to homeownership is the freedom to make decisions about your house that best suit your needs without the approval of a landlord.

Why Rent?

ompared to owning, renting is fle ible and is usually low risk. Renting can require less money up front and provides you immunity to declining home values. It’s also a good option if you enjoy the ability to move relatively quickly. Not handy? Renting is also great if you prefer to leave home repairs to someone else.

Next Steps

As you make your decision, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1. Am I ready for homeownership? Mortgage-ready homebuyers typically have not had a foreclosure or bankruptcy in the past seven years and no severe delinquencies in the past 12 months. Exterior renovations that boast the best ROI

METRO

Remodeling with a return on investment in mind can be a smart strategy for homeowners, whether one is thinking about moving in the next few months or further down the road. Though this approach is an inexact science, in many instances, it’s savvy for homeowners to consider what buyers may want when planning home improvements.

omeowners may be surprised to learn which renovations garner the best ROI at resale. he home loan and refinancing company RenoFi indicates that overall home improvement projects provide a percent ROI on average. Many highROI projects add functional space and improvement. The following are some exterior renovations that help homeowners recoup the most money at resale, according to Remodeling magazine’s ā€œ2022 Cost vs. Value Report.ā€

1. Garage Door Replacement: 93.3 percent recouped of $4,041 cost

2. Manufactured Stone Veneer: 91.4 percent recouped of $11,066 cost

3. Siding replacement (Fiber Cement):

68.3 percent recouped of $22,093 cost

4. Window replacement (Vinyl): 67.5 percent recouped of $20,482 cost

5. Siding replacement (Vinyl): 67.2 percent recouped of $18,662 cost

6. Window replacement (Wood): 66.3 percent recouped of $24,388 cost

7. Deck addition (Wood): 64.8 percent recouped of $19,248 cost

8. Entry Door Replacement (Steel):

63.8 percent recouped of $2,206 cost

investments are exterior renovations, making this area of a home a particular point of interest for homeowners. The only interior project that cracked the Top ROI for projects was a minor midrange kitchen remodel.

Exterior renovations perhaps add the most bang for your buck because they’re not only functional, but also because they

add immediate curb appeal. Much in the way it has been said people eat with their eyes first which is why chefs spend so much time on elaborate plating buyers will judge a property by how it looks when they arrive, even before they’ve stepped inside a home. In essence, home buyers often judge a book by its cover. A worn exterior may indicate to potential

buyers that the home was not maintained, however false that assumption may be. It’s important for homeowners to consider all factors before beginning a renovation. Certain projects offer a stronger return on investment than others, and that s a significant consideration for homeowners thinking of selling their homes.

4 ways to make your home come to life with colorful and patterned tile

Brandpoint

Whether you are looking at making a dramatic statement or adding a pop of color to a more neutral space, tile is an excellent and expressive choice for any home renovation project. Because of the range of glazes, surface patterns and materials, there are virtually limitless options to elevate and personalize your home.

Tile’s expressive nature allows you to define your spaces with pattern, color and personality. You can use tile to update your flooring, create a focal point within a room - like a coffee nook, bar area or fireplace - or as decorative borders.

If you’re considering updating your home’s design, check out these four ways you can create welcoming and unique spaces using tile.

1. Ideal for kitchens

Because of tile’s versatility and vast range, it’s a natural choice

for adding color and pattern to your kitchen. For example, if you have a white kitchen, choose a colorful tile with interesting patterns or textures to draw the eye. A benefit of using tile in the kitchen is that depending upon the tile selected, it can also provide the strength and durability to address any cooking misadventures with its easy maintenance.

For a stunning kitchen backsplash that presents an artful, visually compelling pattern within a room, opt for a textured tile like the bespoke Senso by Kelly Wearstler collection. Designed by awardwinning American designer Kelly Wearstler in a collaborative partnership with ANN SACKS and handcrafted in its Portland, Oregon, factory, this stoneware tile collection imparts the beauty of plaster without the upkeep and expense.

ā€œPlaster has such a beautiful hand quality,ā€ said Wearstler. ā€œIt is a favorite application for

subtle, yet standout features in an interior ... translating this subtle surface into versatile stoneware opens the potential for truly striking design moments throughout the home.ā€

2. Bold patterns for bathrooms

Tile is also an excellent choice for bathrooms for many of the same reasons it’s become so popular for kitchen surfaces. Its water-resistant quality makes it the perfect material to add color and pattern to showers, walls and flooring.

The ANN SACKS Liaison by Kelly Wearstler Tuxedo Check tile pattern offers the natural colorations and veining of marble. The stone tile’s durability and bold design make it a practical and visually striking choice for a bathroom renovation.

ā€œThere is an earthiness to these tiles and a rich tactile quality natural to these designs that I love,ā€ said Wearstler. The collections of geometric patterns and symmetry of these marble tiles provide contrast, soft shading and textural nuance to

any bathroom project.

3. Outdoor spaces

Tile isn’t limited to indoor design. It’s tough enough to withstand the natural elements as well as daily use. It’s a versatile option for pool surrounds, fountains, pavers, and outdoor kitchens and patios.

The Liaison Linqs collection is a great choice for outdoor projects, depending on climate and method of installation.

Like the Tuxedo Check pattern, the geometric designs are imaginative and playful, with visual textures and natural colors that add depth and composition to any space.

4. Adding decorative touches

While tile is a great material for big projects, it also excels as a decorative element. Ceramic tile is a superb choice to create decorative accents throughout your home.

It can range from traditional to contemporary in approach with various colors, shapes and patterns to help you

express yourself. Whether in an imaginative fireplace surround, intriguing trim, elegant border or sophisticated backdrop, there is virtually no limit to the creativity and level of customization you can achieve.

Wearstler’s Scout tile collection by ANN SACKS pushes boundaries with ornamental linear, geometric and curvaceous shapes that draw focus to accentuate spaces - large and small - from dramatic feature walls to intricate borders, and can be mixed and matched to create one-of-a-kind installations. Also handcrafted in Portland, the collection’s range of custom glazes, colors and distinct designs was designed to make a space come to life.

Are you ready to add intrigue and variety to your home? Using these four tips, you can creatively incorporate tile into your interior and exterior spaces for a simple yet striking renovation. HOLLYWOOD — Former California governor and Hollywood superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger is starring in ā€œKung Fury 2,ā€ with Michael Fassbender. He’s also starring in the new actionadventure Netflix series ā€œFUBAR,ā€ with his ā€œTerminator: Dark Fateā€ co-star Gabriel Luna. The 75-yearold former Mr. Olympia is still in great shape. And don’t forget ... as he promised in ā€œThe Terminatorā€ — ā€œI’ll be back!ā€... and back again! ***

In 1959, a 26-year-old Carol Burnett starred in the musical adaptation of ā€œThe Princess and the Pea,ā€ called ā€œOnce Upon a Mattress.ā€ I was 13 and hung out at a little candy store next to the Phoenix Theater where ā€œMattressā€ was playing. Carol got her coffee at the candy store before her shows, and she’d joke with me and my two friends who were always there. I had a huge crush on her, and when ā€œMattressā€ moved to Broadway and she became a regular on ā€œThe Garry Moore Show,ā€ I commuted to the tapings. She got me a seat for every Friday show.

One night, I was barred from the studio because they said I was cutting tape by laughing and clapping so that I could hear myself on TV. But what they didn’t know was that I’d meet Carol after dress rehearsal at the Studio 54 coffee shop and she’d tell me where she needed laughter to put over a routine. There I sat, frantic on the floor outside the studio, and a welldressed, very handsome guy asked me why. I explained why, and he said, ā€œWait here — I’ll see what I can do.ā€

He came back a few minutes later and said he’d vouched for me, and we ended up sitting in the fourth row. When Garry Moore did his audience warmup, he excitedly introduced a celebrity in the fourth row. ā€œLadies and gentlemen,ā€ he said, ā€œI’d like you to meet the Yankee Clipper.ā€ Joe DiMaggio stood

up and waved, and it was then that I realized he was the man who came to my rescue. After the show, we went to Carol’s dressing room and then to dinner at China Song next door.

On April 26, which will be Carol’s 90th birthday, NBC will celebrate her in a two-hour special, co-starring her famous friends — Julie Andrews, Lily Tomlin, Cher, Bernadette Peters, Katy Perry, Vicki Lawrence, ā€œAnnieā€ star Aileen Quinn and too many more to name.

The special features moments from ā€œOnce Upon a Mattress,ā€ ā€œThe Garry Moore Show,ā€ ā€œJulie and Carol at Carnegie Hallā€ and ā€œMama’s Familyā€ as well as her films ā€œThe Four Seasons,ā€ ā€œPete ā€˜n’ Tillieā€ and ā€œAnnie.ā€ Of course, it will also feature moments from her 11-year run of ā€œThe Carol Burnett Show.ā€

If not for Carol Burnett, I might not be a photojournalist or writing this column now.
