Mission Statement The mission of Be A Champion, Inc. is to use sports, education, nutrition, and community service to enhance the development of our youth regardless of age, race, gender, religion, or creed.

We hope that by doing so, our program will improve society as a whole, giving young people a chance at a better future.

A Letter From Our Founder & CEO

A year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 gave us some glimmers of hope and a return to a semblance of normalcy. This year marked the 20th Anniversary of our founding, and the Be A Champion team celebrated throughout the year. With a new year comes new, different challenges, but our staff met them all head on and made major impacts on the communities we serve. Our programs performed exceptionally well, and we were so happy to be back in action for another great year!

Our Champion Fuel Food Programs offered two options for serving our communities. This hybrid model allowed us to safely ease back into school settings, while still providing drive-through and walk-up meal distributions to families at community centers, churches, apartment complexes, and more. As long as there are hungry bellies out there, our job is never complete, and our Champion Fuel team worked tirelessly and found new, innovative ways to connect with communities in need.

Students, teachers, and staff returned to classrooms this year and our Educational Services department leapt into action. With Texas House Bill 4545 going into effect, schools were required to provide tutors to students who failed any portion of the previous year’s STAAR Test. Our team rallied to secure tutors for our partners, taking the pressure off the schools and allowing them to focus on navigating the new school year. We also saw the need to increase our support staff. Be A Champion partnered with several current and new scholastic partners to ensure students had the support they needed to be successful.

Little Coogs reemerged this year after the pandemic canceled last year’s programming. Youth from all over Houston came together for tailgates with free meals and snacks, friendship, and college football. After being sidelined for a year, watching hundreds of Be A Champion youth cheering on the University of Houston (UH) Cougar football team was a sight to behold, and we loved every minute of it – particularly when we were winning the games!

James and I spent much of 2021 reflecting on the last two decades of service. Our dream for Be A Champion started when we were playing football at UH and the fact that we are celebrating our 20th anniversary is beyond our wildest expectations. We are blessed to celebrate this milestone and the countless lives impacted by Be A Champion throughout the years. We are truly humbled, and we are looking forward to the next 20 years and beyond.

A Letter From Our Co-Founder & COO

After 2020 pushed our organization in ways we never could have imagined, our team was thrilled to get back to a version of pre-pandemic normalcy. We took the lessons we learned from navigating through the ongoing health crisis and applied those to our programs. In October, we marked 20 years of service to our community and set the tone for the next phase of our organization, looking ahead to the next 20 years. Certainly, 2021 gave us much to celebrate, and Be A Champion, Inc. is showing strong signs of financial growth every day.

We shifted to a hybrid model of meal service that allowed us to serve grab & go meals, while still serving students in schools. Our staff adhered to all safety guidelines and pushed themselves to distribute as many meals as possible to ensure we were serving our community safely and making sure all youth in their designated regions were fed. Having both distribution options allowed us to increase the number of meals served. Implementing dual service models impacted the total number of youth served, which impacted our total Champion Fuel Food Program income, in partnership with the Texas Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Being able to bring our Educational Services back in full force to schools across Texas had a tremendous impact on our revenue. We expanded to several new school districts, providing tutorial services, substitutes, and enrichment programs. Each contract meant more support for Texas students and unrestricted funds for our organization to continue expanding those services. Our Educational Services team worked tirelessly to keep up with the demand and not only strengthened our ongoing partnerships, but also formed brand new relationships that will likely continue for years to come.

At the end of 2021, we ended with over $19M in total Champion Fuel Food Program income, over $2.1M in enrichment and co-pay services income, and over $12.7M in in-kind donations. Our team worked diligently this year, and if the hard work shown by this group is any inclination of where we are headed, the next 20 years will look bright.
