Mission Statement The mission of Be A Champion, Inc. is to use sports, education, nutrition, and community service to enhance the development of our youth regardless of age, race, gender, religion, or creed.

We hope that by doing so, our program will improve society as a whole, giving young people a chance at a better future.

A Letter From Our Founder & CEO

What a year! James and I started Be A Champion, Inc. in 2001 with one mission - to positively impact the lives of at-risk youth. In 2020, nearly two decades since our founding, that same goal guided us as we continued to expand beyond Houston and juggle the ever-changing landscape as a result of COVID-19.

The pandemic made food scarcity even more prevalent, and our teams across Texas stepped up to answer the call. We met families where they were this year and made sure we continued to ensure that our meals were accessible, healthy, and free. We adopted a “grab & go” drive thru style of food distributions. This meant our staff were out in the summer heat, wearing masks, and loading up cars with meal packs and milks for families in need. Despite the less-than-desirable conditions, rest assured our team always had a smile on their faces under their masks.

Students and teachers transitioned to online web-based learning and instruction. While they figured out how to do school online, Be A Champion’s education services team was hard at work figuring out how to continue supporting them. Our team adapted to the evolving COVID-19 environment to offer tutorial services via online learning platforms. This was a new program feature and helped our students stay on track and staff engaged with our partners. The team made the most of their down time, getting organized and planning for the upcoming school year with high hopes for a return to normalcy.

This was one of the more difficult years in recent memory in every way possible. In moments of struggle or when hope started to wane, our team never lost focus or drive. They knew that our services were imperative to keeping youth in Texas and their families going. It’s amazing to reflect on 2020 and see how Be A Champion emerged stronger and better than ever. We are so grateful to look forward to our 20th Anniversary year with hope and passion for what’s next on the horizon.

A Letter From Our Co-Founder & COO

Be A Champion, Inc. kicked off 2020 with hope, ambition, and excitement about continuing to support our communities with free meal programs and educational services. Once March rolled around, all the wheels we had in motion were brought to a screeching halt.

The COVID-19 pandemic was relentless during its onset, and we were no longer able to provide in-school or after-school programs, meal distributions were put on hold, and our Little Coogs program was paused indefinitely. We knew just because the world paused, however, the needs of our community did not. Our team jumped into action and worked tirelessly to determine new ways to bring our services to youth in need.

With continued support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and our food vendors, PepsiCo Foundation Inc. (Food For Good) and Revolution Foods, we were able to switch to a “grab and go” style of distribution, making the meals more accessible to families, while social distancing as much as possible. Thanks to our team’s adaptability during a pandemic, Be A Champion went on to serve the second highest number of free summer meals in the entire state of Texas!

The first three months of the year were projected to be one of the largest programming quarters for our educational services department. However, unable to return to campuses after lockdown started in March, our services were halted overnight. We had to furlough all of our employees who worked after-school programs along with school day tutors and substitutes. The program revenue projections were no longer there, but our team worked closely with school partners to navigate their needs and protocols so that we could still support staff and students towards the end of the year.

We wrapped up the year with over $32.7M in total Champion Fuel Food Program income, over $700,000 in enrichment and co-pay services income, and a team that is stronger than ever. Watching each and every department working tirelessly to keep programs operating was incredible and has shown us that we can truly get through anything as a TEAM.
