Use one of the native groups used for the Week 1 assignment. Select a native group that is new for the majority of the members. An African slave living in what is now developing into Latin America for labor in agriculture and mining Explain how each character’s life is affected by religion, the economy, and societal roles. Include the following: His or her role in society based on gender. For males: the effects of honor and patriarchy on their life and family For females: the roles of curandera, marianismo, and convents as paths to achieving power in a male-dominated society The role of the character’s ethnicity in determining his or her social class The changes that came about that created these social classes The changes that created these societal roles The effects of each character’s religion on the conquest of Latin America The role of mercantilism, mining, and other parts of the economy on the conquest of Latin America Cite a minimum of three research sources other than the course textbook. HST 206 Week 3 The Quest for Independence This journal account is of the move toward independence by many Latin American countries. The journal is written from the viewpoint of a member of the Spanish government as he follows news of the many revolutions in the country’s Latin American colonies. In this journal entry he begins reflecting on revolution and the desire for independence and also on those things that might have acted as a catalyst for many of these countries to revolt against Spain’s rule. Resources: University Library, Internet Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word journal entry as this member of the Spanish government who does the following: Discusses the Enlightenment thinkers that influenced the development of these spreading revolutions, including American author Thomas Paine with his work Common Sense and French Enlightenment authors such as Voltaire and Rousseau Discusses why independence and revolution might appeal to people Considers revolutionary thought and the spread of these ideas throughout Latin America, in particular, through the Declaration of Independence from the United States and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen by the French revolutionaries Compares similarities among the ongoing revolutions in various countries such as Venezuela, Columbia, and Ecuador Compares these new revolutions with those closer to his home country such as the French Revolution and even the American Revolution Cite a minimum of two sources.
