Nuaire. For the Complete Ventilation Solution The drive towards building more energyefficient homes is making houses significantly more airtight as builders strive to meet building regulations and provide buyers with the promise of low energy bills. However, building airtight properties or making energy improvements without adequate ventilation can have a negative impact on indoor air quality, which is an issue that has recently started to come to the public consciousness. Recent reports have suggested that as many as 40,000 early deaths can be attributed to poor air quality in the UK alone, so it’s something that needs to be addressed. By sealing up our homes to keep valuable heat from escaping, we effectively seal in the moisture produced by everyday activities like washing, drying, bathing and simply breathing. The average family produces 4 litres of moisture per day, and if this moisture isn’t extracted the high levels of humidity encourage condensation which leads to mould growth and an increase in dust mites. Also trapped are the pollutants produced by cooking, cleaning and smoking, combined with the external pollutants that enter the home: traffic exhaust fumes, pollen and, in

many parts of the UK, harmful Radon gas. The results are increased allergic and asthmatic symptoms, airborne respiratory infections and fatigue: in short, unhealthy homes. Making the most of mineral resources

Building and Construction Review is delighted to present its highly prestigious Building Excellence profile to Francis Flower. Renowned for their services in milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders, Francis Flower recover, reclaim and recycle mineral by-products from industry for the benefit of customers and the environment. They provide an exceptional range of products and services to customers primarily in the construction and agriculture industries but increasingly in the paints, plastics and pharmaceutical sectors. Francis Flowers’ unrivalled expertise along with over 50 years’ experience in the industry has led to the company becoming a leading provider of specialised mineral materials and services for a range of industrial sectors. The prestigious company is the owner of the UK market leading brand- Gypsol. Manufactured in the UK, Gypsol acts

as an exceptional alternative to sand/ cement screeds and polished concrete. At the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation, the Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation three years ago and has gained the majority of the market. It is made mainly from a recycled material and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating. When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply. “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation,” commented Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower. “Since introducing the product three years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales

have soared. We provide the basis for our customers to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for them to sell into.” Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects. The incorporation of Gypsol over underfloor heating systems lessens costs and increases sustainability, and tests have confirmed that those using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25% by reducing reaction times and reducing the required flow temperature. A notable product in the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space. “This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves

a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.” “We provide the highest quality products and systems to help your company create the best products possible,” Paul concluded. “Our aim is to continue to develop more innovative products and work on our systems to further improve thermal conductivity. We also have other exciting products and systems we are working on that due to be launched in the near future.” Contact T +44 (0)1928 574574 ff@francisflower.co.uk www.francisflower.co.uk www.gypsol.co.uk

Ultracut FBS II Following the success of their initial foray into Concrete screw market the new product from fischer has several enhancements that are not solely focused on higher load levels and shear values but features that truly benefit the customer. Concrete screws have sometimes been seen as an ‘unsafe’ alternative to a standard through type fixing, with the head especially being ‘suspect’ to some users. However the high performance concrete screws available today hold very little characteristics similar to the standard wood type screw, which is where many of the uncertainties are founded. Concrete screws in the construction market go through rigorous testing to ensure they conform to all ETA’s and are as safe to use and any through type fixing. When using concrete screws the installation instructions should always be adhered to and users should look to use only ETA labelled products (where applicable for safety critical applications). In UK construction, the use of concrete screws for more and more applications is becoming a growing trend. For many more applications, speed of insertion is a major factor to the installer and the reduction of installation time being an area that can be shortened when using a Concrete screw. With all other features comparable to the through type fixings and load values very similar, we should look to the future and expect the use of concrete screws to overtake the through bolt in many more applications. Some of the key features of the new Ultracut concrete screw are in some instances unique, for example the unique saw teeth geometry that allows for easy and faster installation. The Screw itself can be re used several times, and a thread guide is available to aid the degradation of the thread. All of this has been introduced with the aim of saving the user time and money. Because of this, minor installation changes can be made during insertion up to 20mm. The screw can be loosed to allow for slight errors and embedment corrections. The saw teeth geometry and main thread geometry also enable the concrete screw

8

to be installed without drill hole cleaning (in certain cases). This is still in accordance to ETA15/0352. All screw sizes can be installed to 3 different embedment depths that offers the user flexibility over a vast array of applications and attachment thicknesses. Alongside these embedment depth options fischer are also releasing a short version of the concrete screw. Thus enabling, where appropriate a much reduced drill hole depth to ensure much quicker installation. The load values are now significantly higher than many competitors to fischer and above the previous version the fischer FBS, this is apparent in both tensile and shear loading levels. One of the key parameters to the installer is the small minimum edge spacing and edge distances, fischer claim to have one of the best and smallest values in the industry. They believe this can be more important to the installer than having an extra 5 or 10% higher loads than the competition. T +44 (0)1491 827900 www.fischer.co.uk

Designing and Manufacturing World-Class Respiratory Protection within the field of peranatomy of the human body made it possible to create a contemporary protective mask based on an anatomic design using rubber. In this day and age, the company is pleased to offer an extensive range of solutions in the form of half/full face masks, accessories, filters, fan units, face pieces, accessories, filters, compressed air filters, compressed air fed respiratory devices and escape hoods.

Sundström Safety was founded back in 1926 by a forward-thinking mining engineer who identified a gap in the market for respiratory protection products. The innovating Ivan Sundström Sr. recognised that breathing difficulty - experienced whilst working in mines contaminated by unhealthy air - was a major issue that needed to be addressed and set to developing an effective solution. The result was the world’s first ergonomic face mask, designed to protect the eyes and lungs of those working within the mining industry. Ivan’s son Per substantiated the organisation’s worth by responding to the increased demand with the conceptualisation of further products. His expertise

“We supply every kind of respiratory protection other than self-contained breathing apparatus,” explained Tony Smith, Sales Manager UK & Ireland of Sundström Safety Services Ltd. “Our work revolves around coming up with different ways to offer the best level of comfort we can. We look at making the best protection possible, considering important aspects appreciated by the end user such as wearability, robustness and quality – providing products that both the operator and employer would want to use.”

Sundström philosophy of quality modes of protection and consistent product development. “Having been employed at Arco (our major UK distributor) prior to Sundström, I have noticed a few changes since I began working here three years ago,” Tony concluded. “One major difference is that the company has become far more operationally efficient and streamlined, proactively developing innovative products that no one else offers. As well as my role in sales I spend my time training people on how to use the equipment whilst making sure they are kept fully informed about the legislative requirements involved and the implications of not using the apparatus. “Going forward we want to become better known in the UK by increasing our market share and offering the best level of comfort and protection we possibly can to the British industry. We want to reiterate that we are here to help people: there are so many health & safety legislations around but as specialists we have the knowledge that will assist workers greatly in terms of protection during laborious activity. As a very ethical company our main aim is to ensure that individuals can breathe easily and that there are no issues with their lungs.” For more information please don’t hesitate to contact Sundström today. Refurbishment & Conversion Schemes Building conversions as we know are often difficult to complete, frequently with costs spiralling as unknown defects surface. Good and correct investigation can reduce the unknown, however we often see work proposed with minimal investigation or inappropriate investigations employed, based on a standard approach. Refurbishments and conversions can come with their problems which may result in claims being made. This can include issues of damp, mould growth, water ingress and failing roof coverings, with many issues of damp problems, mould growth, water ingress and failing roof coverings. CIRIA 111 (Structural Renovation of Traditional Buildings) provides guidance on the level of investigation as well as typical construction methods used and issues frequently encountered, it is applicable to most low rise buildings of the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. However even with these fairly well understood buildings, issues occur, we often see remedial DPCs injected of inappropriate type for the wall construction, and increasingly at the wrong height (eg above structural floor joists) inadequate investigation of embedded timbers or a reluctance to recover a roof that although may initially appear to be in good order has in reality never performed to modern requirements and importantly modern expectation. Unfortunately, Planning conditions and Conservation control can reduce the appropriateness of a building for conversion to residential use, it is not the case that we don’t agree with these controls, its more that unfortunately new home purchasers have expectations that their new home will perform in the same way as a newly built property and often this isn’t the case, from single glazed windows causing condensation to appear during colder months, to ongoing maintenance requirements and increased sensitivity to a changing climate, the pitfalls can be huge. Fact is that most properties built in the last 150 years are robust, unfortunately unsympathetic use, poor maintenance and simple issues such as increasing ground levels can introduce the enemy of most

buildings – moisture, by far and away the greatest defect we see in buildings proposed for conversion is water ingress through failed roofing and gutters/downpipes (usually as a result of poor maintenance) and moisture rising, not through a failed DPC but usually a bridged perfectly good DPC with resultant rot to timbers both visible and invisible behind wall coverings and other finishes. More recent buildings aren’t devoid of these issues, more that they contain less timber, and were built to more modern standards, however these present other problems such as concrete defects, cladding issues, and in some cases structural issues. There is a lot of guidance out there to assist in the process of conversion, however the aforementioned CIRIA document is an excellent start, but reference to British Standards and even some historic association documents can provide an excellent source of further guidance, and don’t forget we can help you too! Involve us early and we can recommend the type and level of investigation, so that when you start hopefully there won’t be so many unknowns, and where practical we will agree the retention of elements or make clear where replacement is the only realistic approach.

Safe Air During U.K Construction week we will be exhibiting our new SafeAir products. Held at the NEC in Birmingham, it is the perfect venue to showcase our unique and innovative products to the trade and public sectors for the first time. SafeAir specialises in air sterilisation & purification equipment, ensuring a clean and healthy air space for both commercial and domestic clients alike. With an ever increasing focus on our quality in the media, SafeAir couldn’t be more relevant in today’s market, supplying family homes, office spaces, schools, hospitals, waiting rooms and many more public & private places. It works by drawing air from the room into the SafeAir unit, through an electrostatic filter. It then passes through a purification chamber containing a specifically designed UV-C emitter which inactivates the germs. By continuously processing the air, SafeAir machines provide a better, cleaner environment and can make a significant contribution to the improved wellbeing of your family, customers or staff. Over a period of many decades, Ultra-Violet C technology has been

scientifically proven to be an effective method of inactivating airborne viruses, bacteria and fungus. This is done by altering their DNA so they cannot reproduce and cause infection. Common pathogens such as Salmonella, E-coli, Influenza and Tuberculosis have been shown to be inactivated to UV-C exposure at the correct dosage. An added advantage of the SafeAir systems are that the sterilised and filtered air will typically improve the environment for Asthma sufferers. www.tqenv.com

UB Service Recent volatility in the UK energy markets have once again highlighted the importance of good, informed advice across all industry sectors. We have been advising clients on energy procurement since shortly after deregulation in 1998. In that time our clients have benefited from our in-depth knowledge of the industry and our interpretation and forecasting of market trends. Our service is all encompassing and includes all matters pertaining to the supplies of gas, electricity and water. This includes the installation of meters, including landlord supplies, a comprehensive utility transition service on hand-over to avoid any additional unnecessary costs incurred through costly out of contract rates imposed by suppliers, energy procurement, aggregated purchase and resale schemes

and invoice verification. We work with developers, asset managers, facility managers, architects and construction companies and liaise directly with suppliers, DNO’s and MOP’s on new builds and refurbishment projects throughout the UK. Most recently, on a new City Suites Development in Salford for Carillion. We are constantly looking to innovate and develop our approach to utility management and we were first in our field to offer true bespoke length supply contracts to facilitate multisite alignment. Our volume procurement negotiations with suppliers have allowed us to offer visitors and exhibitors a fantastic opportunity to secure a gas tariff under two pence per kilowatt hour until first quarter 2020. Luxury Home Decco LTD Whether it is a brand new home or you simply fancy a change, adding a feature wall can transform your space. Traditionally, bright colours and bold patterns were painted onto one chosen wall to offset a fairly neutral coloured room. In modern times, design has enhanced, with numerous options to achieve focal points in a room. At Luxury Home Decco we believe a feature should be just that, a visual that makes an impression, draws attention to the beauty of a room and complements your personal design. This simple design feature creates balance in the shape and space of a particular area. Even on a budget, it is the perfect way to intensify any space, a way to draw attention towards or disguise the components of a room intended to be concealed or accentuated. While this trend is establishing itself in home design, as innovators in interiors we are increasingly being bold with our design choices leading to more and more of us not just accenting one wall, but sometimes two, or three, or all the walls in an area. Not only does this generate profound impact, but it can make the room feel more complete.

doors and windows, as they may diverge the focus away from the overall effect. It is worth bearing in mind that wallpaper, when applied correctly, around chimney breasts and alcoves can soften features in a room and can revolutionise traditional and outdated furniture. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, it is then time to choose the material. In the past, most statement walls would be in bright, bold colours. In contemporary design, a subtle tone that blends in amidst the colour scheme is deemed just as effective. Textures and visual effects are an excellent way to create an effective ambience whilst sticking to your colour palette. Here at Luxury Home Decco we pride ourselves with creating stylish and original wall coverings. We tailor our designs to our client’s needs, ensuring we maintain our brand values of delivering the most luxurious and premium quality products. Whichever design choices you make, the rules that apply are generally the same. The first step is to choose the right wall (or walls). An easy way of doing this is to let your instincts take over, and identify the spot that naturally catches your eye when entering a room. It is recommended to avoid walls with

Nanotechnology coatings Graphenstone is the first global manufacturer of natural products to incorporate Graphene technology, within our new range of paints, coatings, mortars, adhesives and sealants. An extraordinary discovery in 2005 by two Manchester based Nobel prize winners, Graphene is the strongest known substance in science, over 200 timer tougher than tensile steel and a thousand times more conductive than copper, while retaining flexibility. Our formulas improve the properties of these products exponentially. The addition of Graphene Nanofibres ensures higher values of hardness, compressive and tensile strength as well as elasticity compared to common coatings.

Your Path to a Sustainable Future Biomass is fast becoming the preferred option for the fulfilment of heating and hot water needs for many diverse business sectors, with particular attraction to any wood based business. The advantages of adopting biomass are compelling. Self-generated biomass fuel will remove the existing cost of the fossil fuel alternatives, gas, oil or electricity, creating substantial savings year on year. Further savings on the cost of gate fees and man power for the removal of wood waste, often to landfill, can also be achieved. ECO credentials are maximised with the legitimate claim of almost carbon neutrality for heat and hot water, a useful contribution to CSR responsibilities. However, perhaps the most persuasive argument for converting to biomass is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Paid by the Government, the RHI provides a valuable income stream, index linked for 20 years, paid on the metered kWh of heat generated by the biomass boiler. How long this incentive will be available for new applicants is unknown, so the sensible option is to strike while the iron is hot. Delay could be a very expensive mistake.

If one of our work colleagues has a cold or flu virus, you tend to notice that we might get the same virus. Alternatively, the same happens at our kid’s school and this can be passed on to the rest of the family when we come home. Picking up these conditions are caused by breathing in air which have airborne viruses present. This is where SafeAir can make a difference. How Does SafeAir Work ? UltraViolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is a method of disinfection

or sterilisation that uses ultraviolet light (UV-C) to kill or inactivate micro-organisms. Air from the room is drawn into the unit through an electrostatic filter. It then passes through a purification chamber containing a specifically designed UV-C emitter which inactivates the germs. The air then passes through both micro and carbon filters to provide even cleaner sterilised air. This process is well established and understood within the scientific

community, and for many years it has been used successfully in the industrial, commercial and health sectors. By continuously processing the air, SafeAir equipment will provide a better, cleaner environment, making a significant contribution to the improved wellbeing of your family, customers or staff*. The development began in September 2014, and has been broken to several phases, working its way towards the centre of town. The hoarding has also been produced in phases to accommodate the changes in the construction site’s size and positioning.

The UVC printing process used for this project ensures the vibrancy of the design will last. By printing directly to the hoarding panels, rather than printing and mounting, production time is reduced and therefore more accommodating for tight deadlines. Each panel stands over 1.9 metres high and vary in width depending on the content of the panel. Every panel is finished with a gloss, anti-graffiti seal to protect the panels from the weather and elements, as well as any other potential damage. An 8m by 4m mesh banner was also produced for the site. Wind permeable mesh banners are a highly popular solution for large scaffolding displays that require air to pass through safely, whilst providing a large visual impact.

Commenting on the project, The Bigger Printing’s Head of Marketing and Operations David Bowen said: “The panels and banner look fantastic. It has been enthralling to be part of such a big project, right in the centre of the town, and one we can all see is making such difference to the area.” For more information on Bigger Printing, please visit www.biggerprinting.co.uk

Compound Security Specialists Effective site security is essential to prevent loss of equipment and materials from build sites and to minimize H & S liabilities, but traditional solutions such as man guarding are becoming economically less viable as minimum wage and living wage legislation continues to push up the cost to the client. CCTV has made an impact over the last decade, but still continues to be unreliable and a nuisance due to continual cable breaks caused by heavy plant. CCTV towers have gone some way to resolving this issue, however, such systems require clear site lines in order to be effective as well as regular engineer visits to maintain them which racks up the costs, often to over £400 per week per tower.

Established in 2002, Piling and Drilling Supplies and Services (PDSS) provides a reliable service to all foundation contractors allowing them to source all of their requirements from one supplier at competitive prices, and delivered in an agreed timeframe.

Designed to make the best use of the UK climate, the technology harvests renewable energy 365 days per year, and benefits from both the RHI and FIT subsidy support that covers the complete capital cost of installation. The Minus7 system harnesses solar energy to provide a complete energy solution for buildings supplying heating, cooling and electricity. Solar

for project supply, installation and aftercare management. The company provided hydroponic vertical greening systems that incorporate full irrigation, fertigation and satellite monitoring technology, systems can be constructed for external and interior projects and are pivotal in pushing the biophilic advantages of plant use in the urban environment. Green walls and green roofs will aid in reducing air pollution and if correctly selected species are used, the systems will remove VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and HAPs (hazardous airborne pollutants) from

the atmosphere whilst increasing oxygenation processes in heavily polluted areas. Green roofs are primarily used to manage water, retaining large quantities after heavy storm rainfall and slowing the movement of volumes into already full drainage systems. Areas of green roofing can reduce localised flood risk and systems can now control release to benefit local water management plans. www.greenmattersuk.com

Union Home Systems Union, the leaders in Smart Technology integration are announcing the launch of their brand new service, ‘ONE’ at the Smart Buildings 2016 show. To celebrate this exciting news, they are giving away three ‘Sonos PLAYBAR’ units, one on each day of the show. To enter for a chance to win, simply visit stand SB2/209 and score a ‘hole in ONE’ in their interactive competition. Union specialise in the seamless design and installation of Smart technologies into both residential and commercial developments. It was through working closely with their clients and seeing the problems that developers were encountering when implementing Smart Technology into their buildings, that Union developed the unique concept of ‘ONE’ - a single solution for all Smart Technology requirements. Today’s property buyers are tech savvy and many expect smart technology and automated services to be part of a buildings standard infrastructure. The leading property developers across the UK are aware of these expectations and are working with Smart Technology companies to provide these benefits to their buyers.

However, until now the process of including these technologies in a large build was painful and disjointed, with developers having multiple contractors delivering different automated systems like (Lighting, AV, HVAC etc) in addition to the other companies managing the design and specifications of those services. These contractors would then work in silo and to their own deadlines instead of in conjunction with the other aspects of the build. Once the build was complete there was then further fragmentation as the support and aftercare for each of those systems was managed by the individual contractors, creating confusion and the common issues of one contractor blaming the other for a particular fault. Put simply…to date, Smart Building integration has been anything but Smart. For further information and to book an appointment at the show, call Union on +44 (0)1473 276112

Isothane Ltd Our range of injected and spray foam products can be used for both new build and retrofit projects and can be used for domestic, industrial or agricultural purposes. Duratherm is our BBA & LABC accredited closed cell spray foam insulation is perfect for insulating both pitched and flat roofs in both new build and retrofit projects. When

installed Duratherm seals off all the gaps therefore eliminating air leakage making the insulation more effective and improving the energy rating. Similarly our product Technitherm also has BBA and LABC accreditation and also offers excellent thermal insulation leading to improved energy efficiency. However, instead of being spray applied Technitherm is an injected foam solution, which when injected into the cavity though a predetermined drill pattern expands to produce a complete fill in the cavity. As Technitherm expands in the cavity in means it can be used to fill a number

of different hard to treat cavities that other means of insulation can’t; such as random and narrow cavities. Like Duratherm, Technitherm has a closed cell structure this means when injected into a cavity it will prevent the ingress of water into the inner leaf and has been tested by the BRE to meet their requirements for flood resilience. BLM British Lead gear up for UKCW

Pyroclassic Fires UK The Pyroclassic IV fire was designed by the New Zealand Government 40 years ago to tackle the problem of air pollution and it’s the same stove you see for sale today. How it does this is it has a primary and secondary burn chamber which burns even the secondary gases therefore hugely reducing the emissions and increasing its efficiency. This technology has enabled the product to obtain DEFRA exemption which means it can even be installed in smoke control zones across the UK. The Pyroclassic has NO grate, NO ash pan, which means NO mess. This in itself makes the Pyroclassic unique compared to many of its log burning competitors. This is down to the design of the cylindrical fire chamber (which will take double the conventional log length up to 50cm) by using blast furnace technology which pulverizes even the ash particles leaving you with little or no waste product which means no wasted energy. In the heart of the Pyroclassic is the burn chamber. This is a one piece cast ceramic cylinder that has a

very high thermal mass which slowly dissipates the heat over a long period of time creating a nice comfortable constant temperature in your room instead of it fluctuating up and down with the strength of the fire. The Pyroclassic is available in over 100 different RAL colours with easily interchangeable panels, so if you decide in 5 years time to change your decoration you can just change the panels to suit as the firebox has a 15 year warranty. The Pyroclassic is a 5kw dry stove and is also available as a boiler stove by installing the water heating element capable of up to 3.7kw to water which uses the hot exhaust gasses to heat the water so it doesn’t take anything away from the room heating capability of the stove. The Pyroclassic has a 10mm thick steel top plate which is ideally suited for

The Pyroclassic is DEFRA exempt which means it’s that efficient it can even be installed in smoke control zones in the UK due to its low emissions. It is also a HETAS approved product. The Pyroclassic is the only DEFRA exempt stove in the UK market to be capable of 12 hour + burn cycles on one load of material so you can stoke the fire before going to bed and be sure it will still be lit and keeping your house warm in the morning when you get up. www.pyroclassic.co.uk

Experts in Textile Solutions For more than 85 years, workwear from F. Engel™ has been selected by customers from all over Europe as the first choice for all-round protection and maximum comfort no matter what a work situation may demand. Founded in 1927 by Carl J. Engel Senior and now 4th generation family-owned, the company has 850 employees based at its Headquarters in Norgesvej, Denmark and 2 factories in Lithuania. Since it first began, with the importing of denim from the U.S. as a hard wearing fabric, the company’s aims have always been the same – to provide superior quality, value for money workwear designed for a perfect, flexible fit and to give long lasting, reliable service. The original fabric was called Bull Denim which was made from 100% cotton. Over the years the materials and manufacturing processes have been continually developed to incorporate many new practical and beneficial design details with the versatility of the fabric improved by adding the yarn combination of polyester and cotton. New colours have been introduced and many businesses are now recognized by the specific

colour combination and design of their Engel corporate workwear where not only is it valued for its practical uses but also as a significant part of a company’s professional statement. Development is an ongoing process as new smart colour combinations and materials are continuously created and tested, with a constant emphasis on product quality, innovation, flexibility and environmental awareness. The company has an impressive seven collections (along with a large range of accessories), all of which are ‘tailor-made’ for a wide range of industries including manufacturing, offshore, building & construction and the commercial sector. Each item of clothing is designed to be a perfect, comfortable fit whilst giving maximum freedom of movement and

reliability, and all are fully certified to EN ISO 20471:2013 standard. As an example, one of the main brand names under the F. Engel banner is ‘Combat’; geared to cope with any season and designed for action, this durable and stylish, uni-coloured collection has contrasting and reflective piping for greater visibility on jackets and trousers, many of

which are made from 100% cotton. Almost all the trousers feature such useful detail as ruler-pockets, hammer straps and mobile phone pockets, whilst the leg-length can be extended an extra 4-6cm if required. Other names to look out for, each with their own unique benefits, include ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Work Zone’ and the ‘Light’ range for warmer weather. There are two policies which the company considers to be of very special importance. One is that advice is freely offered to firms and organisations within every relevant industry on the most effective ways by which they can comfortably protect their personnel; the other is to be in constant touch with its customers and end-users to ensure that all products are designed and manufactured with the aim of allowing them to do their work as efficiently as possible. The company is continually researching and gaining new and helpful ideas, from the locker room, to closely examining and testing all practical aspects of wearing and using its garments to maximum effect. Special lifting project domestic fitness suit Dudden Construction Ltd was in the process of adding an extension to a cliff side property in Fowey, Cornwall, and this was to include a fitness suit with an aqua trainer and hot tub both sunk into the floor. The client wanted the aqua trainer and hot tub to be hidden under the floor when not in use. Dudden came up with the idea of having sections of the floor acting as covers that could be raised to ceiling height and then lowered back in place as and when required and they asked Linian Crane and Hoist Company to design and manufacture a suitable and bespoke winching system as there was not any standard lifting or winching equipment on the market that would satisfy all the criteria and overcome the various constraints. The requirements were that the system should be unobtrusive, safe, reliable and general fit in with the high quality appearance of the finished suite. Linian designed special winches that could be installed in a very tight ceiling cavity. Each winch had two drums and two hoist wires were paid out from each drum. The winches

20

were to operate on 240 volt single phase power supply and be fitted with upper and lower working and safety limit switches for safe and accurate positioning. Each winch wire terminated in a cleverly designed hook/key attachment which could locate in recessed lugs on the floor covers to be lifted. The hoist wires and attachments were manufactured from stainless steel. Ben Dudden, Managing Director of Dudden Construction Ltd, commented “Linian did a terrific job designing the winch system for our project. Communication was easy and efficient despite the long distance from their base. Linian were a pleasure to work with”. www.linian.com

structure, allowing pressure to be distributed evenly time after time.

Having researched the protective clothing market, we confirmed our belief that existing knee pads did nothing to cushion, comfort or protect the user’s knees from long term damage; in the UK the NHS replaces over 104,000 knees per year. In the U.S. this figure exceeds 600,000. We knew that for our knee pads to be really effective they needed to be made of soft flexible material and not foam, as pressure from kneeling causes foam to flatten or disintegrate.

Both the honeycomb matrix and the leafspring are made from the same thermoplastic injection moulded material, ensuring a high compression rate and 100% recovery to its original shape, which means no loss of function over time. This combination gives the unique controlled distribution and deceleration of pressure – in other words protecting the rest of the body from the impact forces whilst kneeling, with the same pressurerelief benefits applying to our, soon to be introduced, new footwear and seating products”

The technology is unique in that the patent is for the geometric structure and not the material; we are free to use any material that we deem appropriate to the product application The secret to our own science therefore lies in the use of a special moulded leaf-spring suspended in an arch by a flexible honeycomb matrix. When pressure is applied directly above the spring it bends, dispersing pressure and distributing weight evenly. The matrix provides a holding mechanism for the spring to control its bend and stabilise the entire

The latest addition to the company’s range are Redbacks Strapped Kneepads; these have elasticated, soft Neoprene straps with dust and particle resistant fastenings which allow them to be worn on bare skin without chafing, or over trousers, and ensure that they stay in the correct position when kneeling, walking or sitting. The pads have a waterresistant covering and a soft breathable, inner fabric that wicks away sweat whilst providing thermal protection from warm or cold surfaces. Durable and hardwearing, the distribution of the impact forces whilst kneeling allows the user unrivalled, all-day comfort and long-term

knee protection, with the added significant advantage of helping to protect against back and neck pain. The company, which is a member of has won a number of awards over the past 3 years for its kneepad design, one being the prestigious ‘SATRA Best Innovation Occupational PPE Award’ in 2012; professional tradespeople who are readers of some of the UK’s leading trade publications have also voted in nationwide polls for Redbacks kneepads as an award winning product. Cost-free Construction Safety Innovations from the equation, and enable employees of any organisation to access the latest Health & Safety, PPE and wellbeing innovations without it costing them a penny.” This in turn leads on to the commonplace problems associated with current procurement practice, which has been known to produce an unfortunate ‘lose-lose’ result. Namely, health & safety managers are inclined to reject unique products because of budget restrictions, which leads to frustration and a reduction of productivity and workplace morale. Procurement divisions also lose out as they often fail to account for the potential cost savings the innovation can bring, and shareholders are negatively affected in terms of finance and throughput.

In a contemporary day and age where intelligent technology is a prevalent force, it seems apparent that companies are relying more and more on product innovation. This has taken its toll on multiple industries and businesses are continually devising new ways to impress customers in a bid to gain a competitive edge over those rejecting modernisation and change. To address this subject we have sought the expertise of Bali Rakhra LL.B, Commercial Director of CKL Workwear Distribution and regular commentator on Health & Safety product innovations, who was keen to discuss the usage of novelty in the real world and its implications in particular regard to the provision of specialised safety solutions. The first consideration Bali brought to our attention is that industry originality is a double edged sword: “innovation is undoubtedly a force for good, but it can either work for you or against you,” he told us here at Building and Construction Review. “An often overlooked consequence of it is the increased legal responsibility it creates on the employer: it can indirectly create a higher of duty of care on employers without them even being aware of it.” This was mentioned in relation to industrial injury tribunals which have in the past been lenient to employers in situations whereby the problem causing the injury had never had an effective

solution in place to prevent it. If there were precautions, it was more likely that tribunals would take a far more dim perspective of companies that failed to introduce them. Another point to be factored in revolves around product cost and quality. Once aspects such as increased employee pain, discomfort, injuries, absence, sick pay and potential compensation payouts are put into play it can far outweigh the difference in initial purchase costs of the innovation. This is of great relevance to the workwear segment, which relies heavily on the supply of durable and dependable apparel and equipment. “In terms of PPE, cheaper products are less effective and wear out more quickly, costing more in the long run in terms of productivity and earlier replacements,” Bali commented. “It is the value, rather than the cost, that is most important. At the moment, however, cost remains the primary issue for most UK companies. That’s what set me off to innovate my own solutions to remove price

The solution is relatively simple and has come courtesy of CKL, an informed industry expert who has over 42 years of experience manufacturing and distributing an array of safety-based products. Having directly spoken to over 1000 health & safety managers, Bali recognised a pattern in their thought process that largely came down to cost objections on an erroneous assumption of how the HSE regulations work. Distinctions weren’t easy to make between PPE items and wellbeing products, particularly for those unfamiliar with the legal definitions, but as a previous student of law Bali was well placed to provide a logical description: “Wellbeing products do not fall within the remit of the PPE regulations, and therefore UK companies are neither obliged to supply or pay for them,” he explained. “Therefore, I decided to create a number of unique supply programmes to allow any UK company to embrace these innovations easily and cost-free - perhaps even creating considerable savings in the medium term. “This would represent a win for HSE and procurement departments, as well as for directors and shareholders. The real winners are the employees themselves whose lives can be significantly impacted the products. It will also benefit the UK economy as a whole, by having innovations actually being sold and used on the market, instead of sitting unsold on the shelves, benefitting no-one. This would bolster further investment in innovation by manufacturers, which further benefits the economy.” This philosophy is the idea behind the recently launched ‘Win-Win’ campaign conducted by CKL at the IOSH Conference 2016. With its enriched understanding of workwear and PPE, the independent supplier is suitably positioned to assist organisations in making the right decision when investing in up-to-the-minute products.

Facilities Management & Fleet Safety News

Choosing the right strapping solution is important for the construction industry, where dependence on quality and reliability is crucial. Steel strapping Ribbon wound steel strapping from Kite Packaging is a popular method of strapping and securing heavy, sharp edged or irregular loads. The Ribbon Wound method by which the strap is wound into a coil increases safety and storage, particularly when compared to “oscillated steel strap”. Kite supply steel strapping in the 3 most popular widths on the market, 13mm, 16mm and 19mm, with a thickness of 0.5mm.

use on flat and level surfaces and will work whether you are applying the tension in either a horizontal or vertical position.

Particularly popular within building, construction and export industries, steel strapping is used when heavy or sharp edged loads require securing, as it proves more robust where sharp or protruding edges are apparent, giving extra strength and security.

Steel strapping safety cutter protects users during the removal of a secured load under tension; it has rubber pads either side to help prevent the steel strapping from springing when cut.

Polypropylene strapping Polypropylene strapping offers high elongation and improved elongation recovery properties, to ensure packages or pallets are secure for delivery and storage. Ideal for light to medium duty use, polypropylene is hard-wearing and durable, meaning that it can withstand numerous knocks, bumps and scratches. It is a cost effective way to strap light duty parcels and works extremely well on semi-automatic strapping machines, manual tools and mobile strapping dispensers.

Strapping (often referred to as banding) is commonly used throughout industries as a key method for sealing and securing goods. Its popularity is down mainly to the versatile range of materials, tools and applications available to companies who utilise strapping as their key packaging solution. Employed for bundling items together for easier handling, attaching items to pallets and crates, reinforcing cartons and boxes or fastening goods together; strapping in all its forms is increasing in popularity. In order to maintain the integrity of a load as it travels through the supply chain or warehouse, it is key to use the appropriate strapping. Securing and stabilising loads (commonly pallets of heavy items) while in transit, ensures pallets don’t de-stabilise, products don’t get damaged and health and safety issues are avoided. Consideration and planning in selecting the right material and process for strapping is often overlooked, given the wide range of applications and materials that best suit any given range of products. Strapping is commonly used for small to medium loads or large and irregular shaped loads so understanding the types available is central to the purchasing process. Health and safety is a key requirement for all companies, particularly in industries where accidents can lead to serious or even fatal injury. The HSE statistics show that in the past 20 years there has been a downward trend in the rate of fatal injury in the workplace, however in recent years this is showing signs of levelling off. Where accidents are the result of mishandling of dangerous or heavy

goods, the importance of using the correct products and equipment is obvious. Strapping together bundles of material is also a safety precaution when materials are stored in warehouse racks, as it reduces the risk of products falling and causing injury. Deciding the strapping that is best for you can often be the challenge; however there are several important questions to answer when determining the type of strapping you need: ssThe type of product being strapped. ssThe weight of the load. ssThe transport processes i.e. how much will the product move around. ssWhere the product will be stored i.e. height and how long for. ssThe shape of the load. Kite offer a complete range of strapping, strapping tools and kits to meet the requirements for low and high volume operations. The range has a reputation for reliability and is highly price competitive.

Polyester strapping One of the strongest plastic strapping products, Polyester (PET) serves as a viable alternative to steel strapping in the brick, lumber and textile industries. It stays tight on loads that settle shrink or expand and will withstand higher tensioning than other plastic strapping – up to 25% higher, with equivalent break strengths. It is ideal for use with semi-automatic machines or hand use with a dispenser and maintains sufficient retained tension, even in extreme conditions. It is known to retain tension on rigid loads better than other non-metallic strapping.

Hand held sealing tools come in widths 13mm, 16mm and 19mm to ensure the secure seal of each size of steel strapping. They allow you to manually secure a seal to tightened strapping, making sure it holds the strapping in place, under tension.

Kite’s range of advanced combi tools carry out the functions of tensioning, sealing and cutting steel strapping in one tool – for added speed and efficiency. No seals are required as the steel crimps to itself for a more effective seal, saving money on purchasing seals. Kites ribbon wound steel strapping dispenser trolley allows strapping to be moved quickly, easily and safely around warehouses or dispatch operations. It is particularly useful when strapping is being applied in multiple locations, requiring users to be mobile. For more information on Kites range of products and services, visit www.kitepackaging.co.uk.

Strapping tools Tensioning tools are a quick and simple way of applying tension to your 13-19mm steel strapping to make sure it stays tight and secure. It is designed for

Strapping kits Kites range of strapping kits, are ideal for a range of customers. Available as four different cost effective and ready to go solutions, the kits give you all of the items your operation requires in one single package. The kits supplied are suitable for both standard and heavy duty operations and are supplied in hand operated, dispenser and trolley mounted forms. The items and quantity per kits vary depending on the kit selected; however you will find several items from the list inside: a tensioner, sealer tool, combination tool, a large reel of strapping, a dispenser stand, plastic or metal strap seals and/or a mobile strapping trolley.

Mayfair Granite worktops, and solid timber for cabinets instead of composite materials.

With access to a wide range of exotic manmade materials and smart appliances there is one kitchen style that still remains king, the traditional kitchen. But why does this traditional style still remain the number one choice? Here kitchen worktop specialists Mayfair Granite tell us why: The kitchen design industry moves fast with new designers and products coming onto the market every day. However, sleek and modern designs aren’t for everyone and over the past decade we have seen a big resurgence in traditional design, not just in the kitchen but across the whole home. The traditional combination of natural stone and solid timber cabinetry have more longevity than modern designs as they embrace the basic form and function needed in the home. Materials used in traditional kitchen designs include natural stone such as granite and marble for

Liberon sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 17

Modern cutting equipment now means that granite and marble can be cut into virtually any shape to suit any kitchen design. Together, these natural materials create a strong and durable space for a busy kitchen environment. Over the past decade we have seen a resurgence in home cooking and baking series on TV as people look at eating healthier. This, together with more information in general about healthy eating means that more people are actually thinking about what they are eating and feeding their families. This uptake in people cooking from scratch has fuelled the popularity of classic kitchen appliances such as Aga range ovens and Kitchen Aids as people return to traditional cooking and baking methods. While we are already seeing an array of smart appliance’s including fridges, microwaves and washing machines making their way into consumer kitchens, we do know the traditional kitchen design isn’t going away any time soon. www.mayfairgranite.co.uk

Building News Launch of innovative Firefly fire safety cable clips range SWA has launched a new range of innovative Firefly fire safety clips. These fully meet the requirements of the BS7671:2015 Wiring Regulations to secure all surface cables in escape routes, preventing fire-fighters and people escaping burning buildings from becoming entangled. Videx Launches New GSM PRO Door Entry System Videx has launched a new GSM door entry system that uses mobile technology to communicate and operate doors, automatic gates, car parks and remote site applications. The GSM PRO intercoms are available in kit form or as part of the popular 4000 Series modular door entry system for single call button applications up to 50 apartments all with the facility to divert to three additional numbers if the first is busy or unanswered. Steve Natton, Special Projects Manager at Videx UK, said: “We’re excited to introduce

our new GSM system as it’s the next generation of Videx GSM that provides users with much greater security and freedom. The intercom enables people to answer calls to their front door or gate from their mobile phone or land line so they never have to miss that important visitor and are made aware of who has visited even when they are not there. The systems provide spoken call progress information so that the visitor is informed how the call is progressing. Four call progress LEDs also offer the visitor a visual indication of the call’s status.” For more information about the 4000 Series GSM PRO, please visit www.videxuk.com or contact 0870 300 1240.

EasiLume lighting transforms AAG Systems HQ EasiLume LED lights were integral to the design of AAG Systems’ new headquarters in Barlborough, Chesterfield. AAG Systems is a young and innovative company, looking for a striking, fun and practical workplace. Accent Office Interiors were commissioned to design and refurbish the interior of the building into a space where people love to work. LEDs were the perfect choice to replace existing fluorescent lights. The work-space is spread over two floors, one with a large breakout area where staff can relax and share ideas, and a ‘drop-in zone’ – a bar counter with stools for salespeople. The space is designed to promote creative thinking and includes feature flooring, vibrant blue accents and EasiLume LED Envie Panels. Fresh decoration and new desks, storage and seating complete the transformation. EasiLume’s Envie edge lit LED flat Panels are the ideal energy efficient replacement for
