The High School Scholar Bowl team had two meets this past week, hoping to come back strong from 3 disappointing losses at Nodaway-Holt on March 5th. On Tuesday, March 12, they hosted play here at home, where they won their first round against West Nodaway (130-90), but fell to Mound City (140-420) and South Holt (240-130) in succeeding rounds. Last night at South Nodaway, they won both rounds in close matches with the home team (280-260) and Northeast Nodaway (150-110).

The team may be a little smaller than last year, but it has many returning players looking to score big. Headed by Senior Rawley Mydland and Junior Gavin Moore, the team has many players who haven’t had much playing time, so the team is working hard to increase knowledge and confidence.

Coach Amy Miller, has started holding practices before school and during Study Hall to keep her players on their toes between meets While she has coached Scholar Bowl before at the Middle School level, she says, “High School Scholar Bowl is more competitive, since scholars are trying to do better each game to try and letter and earn All-Conference titles.”

The team will attend their last regular season match on Tuesday, March 19th, at North Nodaway, and then go on to District play in King City on April 13th.

Band Receives Top Rating at Contest What to Listen To

The De Kalb Tiger Pride Band attended this year’s contest at Tarkio High School on March 12 This contest was for the whole band, and they prepared two songs to be judged by three very qualified judges. The judges scored them from 1 to 5, and the highest score, a 1, is reserved for Exemplary performances

Mrs King says, “It went very well We received a 1 rating from each of the three judges. We received the highest rating there is. I compare it to the MAP test for band Getting a 1 is like scoring Advanced on the MAP test ”

The band started preparing for Contest after Christmas break by reading pieces of music and deciding which to play Then, they practiced their chosen songs for about 10 weeks “We are judged on all aspects of playing instruments as a group. It's evaluating all of the skills we have learned. I am very proud of the band and how hard they worked for our performance Every member of the group has to be able to play their parts; there are no places to hide. It takes a lot of cooperation between all members, younger and older. , ” says Mrs. King.

This afternoon, high school students will be performing their solos at the last Contest event of the year.

Recently, I came across Benson Boone Benson is a singer-songwriter who was born in Monroe, Washington. Boone started his music career on TikTok and then made his way to American Idol, but decided to withdraw himself from the competition

Despite not continuing in American Idol he continued to share his music on TikTok, where he has amassed 5 5 million followers With the help of Imagine Dragons headman Dan Renolds, Boone released his first album Ghost Town, which charted in 13 countries.

His two most popular songs are “In The Stars” and “Beautiful Things ” “Beautiful Things” was in the top 5 of The US Billboard's Hot 100.

I recommend giving Boone a listen because his music tells stories and his lyrics are relatable

Middle School Students Excel at Music Solos

On Saturday, March 2, six 8th-grade Band students went to Northwest Missouri State University to perform solos as part of the Band’s annual music contest. Solos are optional, so students were allowed to choose whether to enter the contest.

They have been practicing their solos since after Christmas break, so they had been working on them for 2 months during their Band class, and before and after school as needed.

Mrs. King gave them opinions of what songs she thought would be best, and then the students made the final selections “I usually pick songs that we have used in the past and I know are good pieces of music,” Says Mrs.

Six students did solos, Garrett Marriott, Conner Eastbourn, Laci Burnett, Lilyy Wagner, Shayley Phillips, and Kale Cassity. Students are rated on a scale of 1 to 5. Five of the Middle School students earned a 1, the highest rating, and one student earned a 2.

Mrs. King says, “They all did very well. They performed well and took the guidance from the judges wonderfully. I am very proud of them. It’s nerve wracking to play by yourself.”

What to Read

My new favorite author is Natasha Preston. She has released 12 books so far, most of them being romance, thrillers, and suspense involving a serial killer

I have read 3 of her books so far, and my favorite book out of the ones I've read is The Fear This book is about a serial killer, and it was all started by a meme The meme was asking what was the worst way to die, and the killer killed people in that way to get revenge Ultimately, the killer is who you wouldn't expect it to be.

I enjoy Preston’s books because they are about murder mysteries, and they keep me interested. We have many of her books in the library, and we can also get them from the Rolling Hills Library Bookmobile, so if you like murder mysteries, you should check one of her books out

On Wednesday, March 6th, the Tiger Pride Band played at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri

The band got to play for the State Basketball Class 2 games. “It was an awesome opportunity to go play for the final four basketball games [...] The band appreciates the administration and the school support we received in order to play,” says Mrs King

The band played between and before each of the three basketball games. They played 20-30 of their Pep songs, some of which were “The Final Coutdown,” “Poison,” “Crazy Train,” “Seven Nation Army,” and more.

They did very well Freshman Isabella Beems plays the drum set and claims, “It went great.”

It was an amazing experience for the Band, and they say that they hope for the chance to go again next year!

In 1993, the novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges was turned into a movie. Directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie follows Gilbert Grape (Depp) and his struggles taking care of his little brother Arnie (DiCaprio) who is Autistic and won't stop climbing the town's water tower Gilbert also struggles to take care of his overweight mother (Darlene Cates) who hasn't left the house in almost 7 years.

.

In the movie you see Gilbert drifting through life and spending every day keeping things together He has a lot of responsibilities since his father committed suicide

His days are bland and repetitive until a weird girl named Becky (Juliette Lewis) turns his life upside down. She teaches him to think about what he wants and that it's okay to think of yourself sometimes, and he falls in love with her.

This movie is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, all in the best way possible It is a great movie and, in my opinion, one of DiCaprio’s best performances If you haven't checked it out you definitely should

Buzzing With Excitment

With the end of the quarter approaching, Rushville Elementary School decided it was officially time for their annual Spelling Bee. These past weeks have been pretty exciting for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who have been preparing every day for the Bee.

To prepare, the classes have been doing some practice spelling bees and working hard on their spelling quizzes All of the kids had done an outstanding job of preparing and there were a certain six who went above and beyond.

Winners from 3rd and 4th grade included Jackson Spillman, who won 3rd place; Isabella Rodriguez, who placed 2nd; and Kaleb Derry, who took home 1st place. “I was surprised when I made it to the final because I had to spell against a lot of really good spellers, and did not expect to get that far, my favorite part was getting a trophy and all of my friends cheering for me.”

The 5th and 6th graders have also worked hard and practiced a lot. It was a very close competition. The three winners who took home trophies and medals were Zoie Nowak, who placed 3rd; Ruby Farrel, who won 2nd; and Klhoe Cowger, who all took home a 1st place trophy

We are super proud of all of the spellers for putting their best foot forward and trying their hardest to succeed in the Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all of the winners, and we wish you the best of luck in next year’s Bee.

What to Play

If you're looking for a nice vehicle simulation game then BeamNG is the game for you. BeamNG is a game that simulates a real crash physics game that has so much detail to it that it is like a real-life simulation. The game has over a million online multiplayer servers and an infection mod. The game is available on Steam Workshop and is only playable on PC. The funny thing about this is I've never played it before. I only knew about it through a YouTuber called Camodo Gaming. I plan on buying the game and from what I’ve seen on YouTube it looks Great.
