A PUBLICATION OF THE BAGLEY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AT MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY

ANNUAL RESEARCH REPORT Mississippi State continues to advance its national stature in research as indicated from several key agencies. MSU is one of 108 institutions classified as a “very high research activity university” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. We are one of 40 public universities with this and a “community engagement” classification. The FY12 research expenditure report from the National Science Foundation also recognizes Mississippi State University. With $54.8 million in engineering R&D expenditures, the Bagley College of Engineering ranks 51st. Furthermore, two of our departments are in the top 30 with electrical at 24th and mechanical 26th. Also ranked was computer science at 43rd. We are currently focused on organizing large competitive proposal writing efforts both internally to the college, with collaborators across our beautiful land-grant campus, and with our colleagues at other institutions. Our distance program was recently ranked 21st by U.S. News and World Report, and we foresee a large potential for growth as we foster relationships with industries throughout our state. The same organization ranked the BCoE 90th in its graduate school report. Over 100 faculty and nearly 600 graduate students are undertaking transformative research that helps us understand the fundamental issues in our field and also has large commercialization potential. Meanwhile, our thousands of alumni across the globe are achieving great things that affect not only their fields, but also the success of our college. I welcome you to learn about our stories.

or Bill Berry, studying petroleum engineering did more than teach him the science and processes behind the billion-dollar oil and gas industry. He says earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State opened doors to a variety of opportunities and experiences. “The opportunities I was able to enjoy were thanks in large part to the things I learned at Mississippi State,” Berry said. “Hard work and that education continued to open doors throughout my career.” After completing graduate school in 1976, the Gulfport native’s chosen path took him straight to Phillips Petroleum Co. That move set off a 32-year career that included stints in Africa, Europe and Asia and ended with Berry retiring as an executive vice president. Despite the thrill of living and working all over the world and rising through the ranks of ConocoPhillips, Berry never forgot that it was made possible by a solid education and a supportive family. With that in mind, he and his wife, Sherry, have worked to help others capitalize on those opportunities. In addition to being active members of service organizations and advisory boards dedicated to improving education, the Berrys have established scholarships at Mississippi State. Most recently, the Houston-based couple established an endowed chair in the Bagley College’s department of agricultural and biological engineering. “Our focus has been to support education where we can,” Berry said. “When we decided to give back to the Bagley College of Engineering, we looked for something that would fill a need and be consistent with our desire to make engineering education accessible.”

www.bagley.msstate.edu

Berry explained that they decided to establish a chair in the agricultural and biological engineering department because of the importance of the discipline and the high percentage of women in the field, something the couple tries to encourage.

“Role models are important for all of us and historically have not been as prevalent for women and minorities in engineering. Without someone to give them an understanding of the field, it can be difficult for them to see a future in engineering,” Berry said. He continued, “I’ve been impressed with what that department has been able to do in encouraging diversity and that’s something I hope this chair will support.” Berry hopes the inaugural recipient of the endowed chair, department head Jonathan Pote, will be able to continue to encourage women and minorities to pursue engineering by creating an inclusive environment that fosters personal and academic development for its students. “It’s important to keep opening doors rather than closing them so those opportunities will always be there, and an engineering degree does that exactly,” Berry said. “Hopefully this chair will help the department give people the opportunity to be exposed to engineering and have that degree be the vehicle that enables them to achieve their full potential in life.”

Father’s advice underlies board’s mission to help students find profitable careers

A

s a seventh generation Madison County native, Harry Lee James’s roots run deep through Mississippi’s clay-based soil. Growing up, he thought his future lay in working that land, like the generations that had come before. His father, however, had other ideas. “I grew up on a farm and that’s what I wanted to do, but my dad said, ‘Son, go out and get a degree in something that you can make a living in. Farming can be something you do on the side,’” James recalled. That piece of advice led James to the civil engineering department at Mississippi State University and a successful career that began in the construction industry, transitioned to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, and has called him out of retirement to serve as executive director of the Mississippi Concrete Industries Association.

“I guess you could say my career has come full circle,” the 1976 graduate said. “And it is important for me to be able to give back to the university that gave me the career and life opportunities that I continue to have.” James gives back by serving as head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board, a group dedicated to ensuring that today’s students have every advantage when entering the workforce. “We want to make sure that our graduates can go out and be immediately productive in any job in the industry,” James said. “We try to make sure that the department has the resources and faculty necessary to prepare its students.” The group typically fulfills its mission by advising and assisting in fundraising. However, as concern grew over the demands of growing enrollment, members of the board

found themselves challenged to put their money where their ideals were. “There’s not a lot of state funding available to create new faculty positions needed to accommodate the increased enrollment,” James recalled. “We discussed the possibility of endowing a faculty position, but we had other campaigns, other concerns, at the time so nothing happened.” He continued, “Then in early learned that one of our own had the gauntlet. They anonymously $250,000 towards establishing position and challenged us, as a match it by the end of the year.”

2012, we laid down put down a faculty group, to

Over the next nine months, every member of the current board donated towards the endowment and helped secure other donors to bring the total to $500,000 by year’s end.

“With this endowment, the department knows it has the support to do what needs to be done, and hire the people it needs to ensure our students continue to receive a quality education,” James said. With the endowment secured, the group has refocused its efforts on securing the remaining funding necessary to start construction on the proposed civil and environmental engineering complex. Eaton plans ahead so future Bulldogs can move forward with less worry

E

ven though he never practiced as an engineer, Al Eaton says the aerospace engineering degree he earned at Mississippi State has helped shape his career—by shaping the way he sees the world. “I’m glad I got a degree in engineering,“ Eaton said. “The discipline in the way studying engineering makes you think and solve problems has served me well over the years.” For more than 30 years, that engineering way of thinking has helped him become a leader in the financial industry. In 1981, he became a stockbroker with E. F. Hutton and Co. Today, he is a senior vice president at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. After graduation, Eaton began pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona. He then

began flying C-141 aircraft for the United States Air Force in Charleston, S.C. He later worked as airport development manager in Bakersfield, Calif., before beginning his career in the financial industry. Even though the change took him away from the aviation sector, he says it didn’t change his appreciation for the discipline; it just changed the role it has in his life. “I still enjoy looking at and reading about engineering things in my free time, but I really enjoy what I do,” Eaton said. “It’s a rewarding job helping people with their finances.” One of the personal finance problems he sees is people trying to manage student loan debt, which is a growing problem for young professionals. Eaton said it makes him even more grateful for the scholarships that helped fund his

2013 Annual Research Report

education—an ROTC scholarship at MSU and a waiver that cut the costs of his graduate studies at the University of Tennessee.

“I was fortunate to have scholarships that let me avoid student loans,” the Yazoo City native said. “ Now I’m just trying to pay something back.” To give back, he and his wife, Susan, established a scholarship within the Bagley College that has been helping fund students’ educations for nearly 20 years.

www.bagley.msstate.edu

“Over the years we’ve gotten a number of letters from students who received money from our scholarship fund,” Eaton said. “It feels pretty good to get one of those letters and know you’ve helped someone.” Knowing what a difference financial support can make to a student’s future, the Eatons decided to make plans to support the school in the long term. Using a charity-focused insurance policy offered through his brokerage firm, Eaton established a living trust, which will provide financial support for additional scholarships and other college needs well into the future. “The country needs more engineers, and I’m glad to do what I can to make sure that financial concerns don’t keep talented students from pursuing engineering degrees,” Eaton said.

he son of a football coach, Tommy Nusz called many places home during his formative years: Texas, Michigan and Virginia just to name a few. But it was the years spent in Starkville, while his dad served as an assistant under Mississippi State coach Charley Shira, that made a lasting impression.

“We were in Texas my senior year of high school and our neighbor worked in the oil industry. He really piqued my interest in petroleum engineering,” Nusz recalled. “I strongly considered different schools, but Mississippi State felt like home ground for me.” Nusz said moving from place to place in his youth helped make him adaptable, which combined with the education he received at State, prepared him for a career in the petroleum industry. Following his 1982 graduation he started work for Superior Oil in Midland, Texas, with fellow alumnus Bob Harrell. Later, he moved to Burlington Resources Inc. where he worked his way up the ranks to a position as vice president. Currently, he is president and CEO of Oasis Petroleum. Nusz said his adaptability has served him well as work has taken him to Europe, Asia,

www.bagley.msstate.edu

north Africa, South America, and Asia. But he said it was the network of Bulldog Engineers threaded throughout corporate America that served his ties to the university. “When I was younger, I was connected because I still knew people in the department. In the middle, we all get preoccupied with kids and careers, so it’s harder to keep up. But then I found myself working with other alumni, like Bobby Shackouls,” Nusz said. “They helped me get reconnected and my involvement escalated from there.” In 2002, Nusz was named an Alumni Fellow by the Bagley College of Engineering and he is currently in his third year on the board of the alumni foundation. He has built a reputation on giving back to the university, including a gift through the StatePride initiative, which endowed a professorship in the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering. “I’ve been very fortunate to have the capacity to be supportive and help the college meet its needs,” Nusz said. “The college recognizes that professorships are important for helping attract, retain and develop our faculty.” Professor Hossein Toghiani is the inaugural recipient of the professorship. The position enables him to advance his materials and energy research, and enhance his awardwinning teaching efforts that will help produce the next generation of Bulldog Engineers. And when today’s students begin their careers and find themselves spread across the world, Nusz knows the network that kept Maroon on his mind, will be there to bring them home again, too. “We have young alumni working with us at Oasis and I do what I can to keep them connected,” Nusz said.

Schneider helps put new technologies within companies’ grasps

S

mall and mid-sized manufacturers have found an ally in Judy Schneider, a professor of mechanical engineering in the Bagley College.

Among the new technologies being explored by the lab are lightweight, high pressure, polymeric composite storage tanks and friction stir welding of metals.

With more than 16 years of experience in the commercial sector before she turned to academia, Schneider understands the challenges companies face when trying to stay competitive without over-extending their resources. Her work as leader of the advanced materials and processing research group focuses on making new materials, techniques and processes accessible to enterprises of all size.

Originally brought to the research group as part of a NASA grant, the lightweight tank project explores the use of polymeric composite materials in the construction of storage vessels for high pressure cryogenic propellants such as liquid oxygen and hydrogen for launch vehicles.

“We focus on advanced manufacturing processes that are not evolutionary,” Schneider said. “Since these advances don’t build on established practices, it’s difficult for smaller companies to embrace these new technologies because they are a drastic departure from the traditional way of doing things.”

24 DIMENSIONS

“We are looking into materials and methods to design safe and reliable vessels to realize a huge weight savings over traditional metal-based systems,” Schneider explained. “To meet this goal, we have developed an extensive database of structure-property relationships that will help optimize design efforts and provide a guideline for the industry.”

2013 Annual Research Report

Schneider said that the group’s efforts in cryostorage-development will aid not only NASA, but also the entrepreneurial companies that are commercializing space flight and those who work with cryogenics as an alternative fuel for groundbased vehicles. The group is also working toward establishing a physics-based model to guide implementation of the friction stir welding process, which can join advanced alloys in a more environmentallyfriendly manner than traditional fusion welds. While this process has been implemented in larger companies, methods to guide tool design and predict process maps are lacking. Development of a physics-based model will enable rapid implementation of the process by bypassing the currently required trial-and-error studies to define parameters and guidelines. The group is also working to develop alternative inspection techniques to verify the quality of the friction stir welds.

www.bagley.msstate.edu

“We want to explain the structural features of these welds and understand what affects their strengths so that we can give guidance on how to best use it in manufacturing,” Schneider said. She knows that better understanding these new technologies will help manufacturers remain competitive in an ever-changing marketplace, but with her students and 10 undergraduate and graduate research assistants helping with the projects, there is one additional benefit the group offers. “Our work will not only help industries with implementation, but we are also training the next generation of engineers,” Schneider said. “When they go to work, they’ll know how to work with these technologies and be receptive to other innovations.”

Rais-Rohani predicts certain success in uncertainty modeling project

26 DIMENSIONS

2013 Annual Research Report

E

ngineers don’t deal in gray areas. They prefer definite answers and predictable outcomes. But in many cases, especially when dealing with new materials and complex manufacturing processes, things aren’t as black and white as they could be. That’s where Professor Masoud Rais-Rohani comes in.

For instance, one application involves the design of lightweight structures made of fiberreinforced polymer composite materials that contain carbon nanofibers—a material that teems with uncertainty in its stiffness and strength properties at both the small- and large-length scales.

Through a four-year project sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Rais-Rohani and a team of Bagley College of Engineering researchers are developing ways to model uncertainty in design optimization of material and product systems.

“In the case of automotive structures, manufacturers want to make cars more fuel efficient,” Rais-Rohani said. “You do that by making structures lighter, using novel design techniques and lightweight materials. But you have to make sure they still retain their crashworthiness.”

“My main area of research is structural and multidisciplinary design optimization, and one of the biggest challenges in that area is the accurate modeling of various forms of uncertainty and their propagation to system responses,” Rais-Rohani said. He continued, “In this project, we’re developing a new methodology for design optimization of coupled systems that involve approximate mathematical models of materials and structures, which are subject to uncertainty. It makes this project interesting and at the same time, very complex.” Rais-Rohani explained that uncertainty might enter a system as a result of random variability in the material properties and operating condition, or if there is insufficient information for the proper modeling of the underlying physics. This can mean anything from a reliance on limited experimental data for a new material or working with a material system that is subject to variability in its microstructure. However, Rais-Rohani explained that using these elements, despite the uncertainty they bring, is important to manufacturers trying to make next generation products.

He added, “That is why we develop methodologies that account for uncertainty in the system and ways to minimize its effect on system performance.” The uncertainty models being developed at Mississippi State can be applied to the design of automotive and aircraft structures, but Rais-Rohani sees potential to apply the ideas to other systems. He is already planning his next projects, which will involve probabilistic and non-probabilistic uncertainty modeling techniques and the comparison of those approaches in a decomposed multilevel optimization framework.

Elmore enhances experiences for chemical engineering undergraduates

S

tacks of paper cover his desk. Coffee filters, bags of chips and plastic cups litter the conference table while T-shirts, robot parts and boxes of unseen goodies obscure most other surfaces and part of the floor. But the clutter doesn’t bother Bill Elmore. Every piece of paper, plastic and cloth is a tool he uses to improve student experiences in the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering. As two students leave his office, Elmore clears off a seat and apologizes for the chaos. “I’m busy, but I love what I do,” he explains, moving wheeled robots onto the table. “All of this you see is an investment in the students’ experiences; something to give them a strong identity so that one day they look back and say,

‘man, it was cool being a chemical engineering student.’” An associate professor who teaches freshman-, sophomore-, junior- and senior-level classes, and undergraduate coordinator who personally advises each of the department’s students, Elmore holds the Hunter Henry Chair in Chemical Engineering. He said it was the namesake alumnus’ wish to establish a position that focuses on students, a legacy he tries to honor by staying with the students through each step of their college careers. “I feel the advising process begins the day a prospective student walks in with his or her parents,” Elmore said. “I’ve found the sweet spot for me because I love the face-to-face interaction. I generally talk to students daily about their classes, grades or career paths.”

It’s that last part, he says, that drives his excitement for his job. The Bagley College has a history of producing successful chemical engineers and Elmore is confident every student who comes through his door can succeed as a student and a professional once they see all of the possibilities the major offers.

“It takes years to see how a student’s path is going to play out, but I’m here rooting for every one of them all along the way,” Elmore said. “I want to help them realize their goals because I think their lives can blossom beyond what even they expect when they get out of school.” www.bagley.msstate.edu

But sometimes, it doesn’t even take that long. Walking down to student lab spaces on the first floor of Swalm Hall, Elmore talks about a student who, as a rising sophomore, earned a summer engineering job based on the handson experience he received in class. “I want my students to have something to put their hands on, because I learn that way,” Elmore explained as he pointed out automated process controls made of tubes, gauges and buckets—the practical application of much of the “clutter” crowding his office. “We’re opening their eyes to the applications they are learning, and helping them have fun while we do it,” he said. “I believe these experiences will stay with them for life.”

Virtual brain model changes understanding of traumatic injury

A

model developed by a team of Bagley College biomedical engineers will redefine how traumatic brain injury is understood. Challenging more than 20 years of conventional wisdom, the BCoE’s human body simulation group developed a virtual model of the human brain that shows shockwaves traveling through hard tissue, like bone, as well as the soft tissue rather than directly impacting the gray matter alone.

“We wanted to study what happens at each scale from the individual atoms to the tissue as a whole, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” Raj Prabhu said. Traditionally, traumatic injury has been studied using an animal model or synthetic material to approximate the reaction that would occur in human tissue. However, Prabhu explained that these alternative models lack the coupled geometrical and biochemical processes that are present in human bodies. To overcome this obstacle, the group is developing a virtual model that accurately depicts the structures of the human brain from the smallest atom at the microscale to the tissue that can be seen with the naked eye. By applying the physical properties of human tissue to the model, the researchers can then run simulations of different types of trauma to see exactly how it affects the brain at all levels.

“Our virtual brain is the most accurate solution to show what happens to all of the tissue when a trauma occurs,” Prabhu said. “By using multiscale modeling we’ve been able to capture the physics and biomechanics that occur across the board, which will allow us to see what kinds of impact cause injury and where those injuries occur.” Multiscale modeling is a common practice in composite materials and automotive structure development, however, it has not been widely applied to developing high fidelity human models. “Learning to develop multiscale models is like a whole new language in the field of biomedical engineering,” explained Lakiesha Williams, an assistant professor and group leader. “We’re going against the grain and some people won’t see the need for these complex models since there are other models in existence, but many of those are very simplistic. Our physics-based models will help us understand so much more.” Now an assistant research professor and a thrust leader in the human body simulation group, Prabhu began developing the virtual brain as a doctoral student under the guidance Mark F. Horstemeyer, a professor and endowed chair in computational solid mechanics. With the completion of the multiscale brain model, the group now has many more projects on the horizon. “Now that we know exactly what happens in the brain, we know how to go about designing the protective gear,” Prabhu said. “Ultimately, our goal is to complete a model, with this level of detail, for the whole human body.”
