oo bad in this century we can no longer abbreviate the years into the ‘70s or whatnot, because “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams is one of my all-time favorite nostalgic songs. It reminds me of high school and college, first loves, heartbreaks, climbing aratiles trees with my playmates, hanging out at the mall, trips to Baguio (and more times to Maya-Maya at my friends’ summer home), laughing ‘til I cried with my girlies, cheerleading, dancing on a disco ledge, trying out my first Long Island iced tea (and realizing there was hardly any iced tea in it), and so on. Ahhh… good, simple times. Fast track to February 2015, and I am extremely backlogged on work while nursing a sick husband who’s on bedrest while my two girls (you’ll see them in our fashion story here called, “A Solemn Affair”) stay with him in the nursery. The AC is coldest in the baby’s room, so it is where the sick husband needs to be stationed. I’m typing this note beside my beloved 2-year old boy who’s knocked out after a too-long day, where he was either cranky, sleepy, or hungry—or all of the above. Not to mention, two furry creatures doze by my feet, just because they are my minions. (Note: Dear God, please don’t let them bark at something inane now and wake Mathis). The sun blazes for some parts of the day already, and it’s hardly even the summer months. I feel like I am menopausal at 40, because my temper glares as hot as the midday sun, and I’ve got this sunspot on my right cheek to show for it. Good, simple times? Scarcely. However, when I think about it—do I really hanker back to those days when life was so carefree? I often yearn for a free hour to have my nails done, and yet when I hear my kids call out to me, I come running. My fear is to miss out on anything that they might do without me—they are my reasons for living. It was seeing my firstborn that this stanza actually came to life for me: “Oh, and when you held my hand

I knew that it was now or never Those were the best days of my life” Perhaps it was from being the product of growing up in a single parent environment that my ‘summers of ’69’ were comprised mostly of things I did with friends—now I am given the opportunity to change that when it comes to my children. Memories with their friends, they’ll have that for sure, but hopefully I can get in on the action somehow. These are the best days of my life, thanks to my little kinfolk—and I hope to be along for the ride with my three. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy this special double cover with two amazing families on it. Soleil Moon Frye of “Punky Brewster” fame has become a friend to me, and because of her I will always have special reminisces of living in Los Angeles—going on playdates and attending her kids’ parties at their home. Soleil has always been someone I look up to for her business sense and crafty-ness—and now that her third cover for BC is overdue, I decided to do a lookback to when it was just her two daughters, Poet and Jagger. Here, we did the photo shoot at their lovely home in Venice Beach, CA. Here in Manila, it was also a genuine pleasure getting to know actress Ara Mina and Mayor Patrick Meneses in their beautiful abode north of Manila. The two have yet to make their union official, but already they look like an old married couple caring for their daughter, Mandy—meant in the best sense of the phrase. They look comfortable and in-love with each other, and the way they playfully argue is endearing to witness. I also wanted to invite you all to BC’s first Easter Funday event. This will also mark the official launch of our BC Studio Café at Commercenter Mall in Alabang, which is the physical home of our magazine where you can dine, interact with like-minded parents, shop a bit, and have your family photos taken by our team. Here’s hoping to meet you guys in April!

armer weather and the end of the school year signals the start of the family boating season. Boating offers one of the best ways for parents to escape the distractions of everyday life and share their enjoyment of nature with their kids. However it’s important for parents – es-
pecially those new to boating – to follow a few basic safety steps that will help make the experience more enjoyable for the whole family. The Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to boating safety and education, offers the following list of 10 Tips for Boating with Kids.

Life Jackets Save Lives. Be sure all kids on board are wearing a life jacket whenever the boat is moving. This is not just sound advice; it’s the law. The U.S. Coast Guard requires that all children under 13 years of age must wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket while the vessel is being operated unless the child is below deck or in an enclosed cabin. Make sure it fits. Children’s life jackets
come in different sizes appropriate to the child’s body weight. Make sure you have one that fits each child onboard, and that the kids haven’t outgrown their life jackets over the winter. Infant life jackets have a strap that runs between the legs and extra flotation behind the head to ensure the baby floats face up at all times. Keep an extra child’s life jacket or two on hand in case a friend comes along.
Kids often complain about having to wear their life jackets on board. Get them “invested” in theirs by letting them pick it out for themselves. Make sure the life jacket fits the child properly, both for comfort and safety’s sake. Be a good role model. If the kids see you wearing your life jacket, they’ll be more likely to wear theirs.
No Exceptions.
These basic guidelines will help you ensure everyone stays safe on board. But the most important tip for your family boating adventure is this: Have fun out there!

Safety Starts in the Parking Lot:
Get the kids in the habit of putting on sunblock, a hat and their life jacket even before you walk down to the boat. That way, they’ll be protected if they accidentally tumble off the dock into the water. Keep Everything “Shipshape”: When you board the boat, have everyone stow their gear and any water toys away neatly. Be sure there are no loose lines, mops, buckets, etc. on deck that someone might trip over. Pre-Cruise Check: The adult who is driving the boat should give the kids a safety lesson before leaving the dock. Make it a point to tell them that there can only be one captain, and it’s important to follow his or her orders quickly and quietly. Set a few basic rules, including: No running or sitting on the side rails, foredeck, aft sunpad or swim platform when the boat is under way.
Kids will get a bigger kick out of a boat trip if you make them your First Mate. Before you leave, show them where you’re going on a chart. While under way, have them keep a lookout for marker buoys. Teach older kids how to work the chart plotter and find your GPS
coordinates. Radio Check: Be sure everyone knows how to operate the boat’s VHF radio in case of an emergency. A good way to practice is to call Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service. This free service not only shows the kids how to key the microphone and talk over the VHF, it also lets you be sure the radio is in good working order. To find the Automated Radio Check VHF channel in your boating area, visit http://www.seatow. com/boating-safety/automated-radiochecks. Tow for Two. When you tow kids behind the boat on inflatable water toys, water skis or a wakeboard, be sure to designate an adult or teen to be the official watcher, keeping his or her eyes on the towed rider at all times. Teach the kids hand signals they can use to tell you to speed up, go slower or stop. Be sure they wear their life jackets while skiing, boarding or riding.

Give the kids assigned seats on the boat while docking, so that they don’t accidentally block the driver’s view. Make sure they know to keep their fingers and toes inside during this process!

Overnighters
Set up your bags 2-3 days before, with each family member bringing a set of sleep and day wear for each night away. A good rule of thumb when it comes to packing articles of clothing and footwear is the number of nights away, plus 1 extra (for spoilage, “accidents,” etc). You also need to keep in mind what kind of activities you’ll be doing: bonfires, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, etc., so you can bring the appropriate attire. It’s better to pack the bags per family member so they can be accountable, and remember to bring footwear that can get wet (like flip flops to use when you trek to and from to take a shower—bathrooms are usually far from camp sites), towels, and a laundry bag (a semi-clear green trash bag works best since it’s waterproof, and also so you can see what’s inside and won’t mistake it for garbage). Wear covered footwear that can protect against debris and pointed or poisonous objects you might step on. Car ReadineSs
Aside from checking the usual tire pressure and filling up the gas tank, check headlights are working as these

Plan and write down a menu (on paper as well, in case your phone or laptop batteries die), so you know what to buy exactly since storage will be limited, and you don’t want to leave food lying around a campsite as it may attract animals to your tents. Think of recipes that are simple, and those with ingredients that you can reuse for other meals. Keeping Kids Safe
It’s a bug’s life in the woods! Insects will definitely ‘bug’ you and the kids, as we know. It is advisable to set up
fires to make sure they are out when you’re done. Never leave a fire without anyone to watch it. And when you’re exploring outdoors, never let kids eat or drink anything unless you’re sure it’s safe. Even if streams or lakes look crystal clear, they could contain germs, and the water may not be safe to drink. Bring bottled water. Likewise, never let kids eat wild fruits. Some are poisonous and it may be tough to decipher which are safe. There are also a lot of animals in the woods—and although they are cute to look at, wild animals are best enjoyed from far away. kids when they were babies or toddlers. You can also play games where one person says a sentence and the next person continues it. First Aid Kit for Camp
Collect basic bandage items such as for wrapping sprains, sterile gauze, rolls, and pads, adhesive bandages (just keep in mind to have different sizes). Include items to help sterilize wounds and prevent infection (water should do the trick), and prepare sprays and creams in case of minor burns and itch. Keep basic over-thecounter medications to relieve minor headaches, stomachache, and allergies. Include simple medical instruments and tools like safety pins, tweezers, and scissors. Keep everything in a Ziploc or plastic bag to avoid wetting sterile meds, and label the keepers for easy access. Keep in mind to have an ample amount for each family member. Camp Etiquette
Be considerate when turning up to the camping spot because you do not want to be a pest to others. Treat the campground amenities as you’d treat your own home; be mindful of other campers who’ll be next in line. Look after your campsite, having the privilege also entails responsibility. Be friendly and greet other campers, it’s a form of being polite. If cooking food that has a particularly strong odor, be thoughtful of your neighbors. If there is a central cooking place, choose that over cooking near other tents, to keep the strong odors away. Explain to children where the invisible borders of your campsite end, so that they don’t cross over into neighboring campsites. Keep noise to a minimum; keep in mind the other camper you do not want to attract conflict. Use a flashlight when you walk, but cover it up with your hand so only a small, diluted half-circle of light can come out. Leave your campsite as you found it, cleaner even. Going back to the first rule, be considerate to others. bc

Because of this, tooth decay is the single most common chronic disease of childhood in the U.S. The good news is that it’s entirely preventable. Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC) in New York is providing parents with simple ways to lead their children to good, healthy oral hygiene. “Good healthy habits are key to proper oral hygiene in children,” said Dr. Paul Kim. “Parents can ensure this by modeling proper hygiene and teaching their children to care for their smiles, which will help prevent potential problems down the road.” Following are some important tips to help your children maintain optimal dental health:

tips to maintain optimal dental health Teach proper brushing and break bad habits. While your child is young, it is key to introduce healthy habits when it comes to their teeth. At 3 years old, begin teaching them how to brush their teeth using only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Try to break thumb-sucking and pacifier habits by age 4.
Regular visits with your dentist. The first visit to the dentist
should happen before a child’s first birthday, so that parents can learn how to go about cleaning your child’s teeth and to ward off the dangers from bedtime bottles and sippy cups that contain milk or juice. Healthy gums lead to healthy teeth. By the time your child is 5, dentist visits should be happening every 6 months.
Set a good example. Children are known to mimic, so make sure you are setting a good example of good dental hygiene by letting your children see you brush and floss daily. Turn it into something special you do together by brushing to your favorite song or creating a tooth-brushing dance.

Ara Mina (Hazel Reyes, in real life—her screen name is a combination of her two sisters’ monikers, with the “Ara” part belonging to another actress, Ara Cristine Reyes) was surprised to learn in her teens that her father is former congressman, Chuck Mathay, only son of Ismael “Mel” Mathay, who was the mayor of Quezon City from 19922001. The couple met in 2011 through a mutual friend, one of Patrick’s best buddies, if we are to be specific, who was Ara’s boyfriend at the time. When they first met, both were not interested in one another, although Ara playfully teases Patrick that he admitted to finding her attractive in one of the interviews they’ve done. As fate would have it though, Patrick relates, “Everything went on the rocks with them and then, they broke it off. And I had nothing to do with it.” Ara says that Patrick became her shoulder to cry on, and they would do group activities together, like Bikram Yoga— which they will soon get back on now that the baby is getting bigger.

The couple was together for 3 years before deciding to get pregnant. They wanted to find out right away what the gender was, and even when the 3D ultrasound confirmed that the baby was a girl, Patrick jokes that he was banking on the 5% chance that the result was inaccurate, and that they were going to have a son. Ara gave birth to baby girl Amanda last December 17, 2014, and as you can tell from our photos, her father is so obviously smitten that any and all hopes of having a son for a firstborn are erased. As far as pregnancy, she had quite a pleasant experience—just your typical food cravings (which Patrick more than happily indulged in with her), and not even any morning sickness. On maternity quirks, Ara only makes mention of one—she was usually irritated by what Patrick said and did. “He would pinch my cheeks and tease me about my weight, and I would get so annoyed.” As it turns out, the baby is a copy of Patrick’s features (save for Ara’s lips), so maybe there is truth to “paglilihi” after all.

Why the name, “Amanda Gabrielle?” Ara explains, “‘Amanda’ means, ‘worthy of love.’ We wanted names that started with the letter H [after “Hazel”] and P [after Patrick’s], but we didn’t like any of them. ‘Gabrielle’ means ‘Woman of God.’ We like nicknames that are a bit boyish. For Amanda, we can use “Mandy,” and for Gabrielle, she can be “Gabbi.” The sound of ‘Amanda Gabrielle’ is beautiful. It was supposed to be ‘Amanda Patrice’ but we didn’t like it so much at that time. Now, a lot of people are suggesting that her second name be ‘Patrice’ because she looks like Pat. My mom calls her, Amanda Patrice, haha. Told her we can’t change it anymore, [laughs out loud].”
Ara comes from a big family on both sides of her parents’, while Patrick only has one sibling (one sadly passed away), so they want to work to having 6 children all in all. I urge them to get started, since there is a lot more work to be done. Ara mentions that I am correct, because someone already wants to adopt Mandy—Patrick’s youthful-looking mom, whom they lovingly refer to as, “Mamita.” I ask them what their favorite moments with Amanda (Mandy) already are. On the topic of their fears as they will watch Mandy grow up, Patrick and Ara are both scared that she will be hard-headed or rebel against them, and I agree. It can be heartbreaking when your children don’t heed your advice. I ask whether they want their children to follow in their footsteps, professionally. Ara states, “It depends on what she wants. We won’t know what her passion is. What if she wants to become a doctor?” Patrick agrees, “Same. If her passion is to help others and to be a man for others, she can get into politics.”

She then made her screenwriting and directing debut at 19, with her then co-director and producer, Jason Goldberg, whom she subsequently married in 1998. The pair are now beaming parents to two smart, darling, and charming daughters, Poet Sienna Rose and Jagger Joseph Blue—both already showing signs of someday entering their parents’ celebrity realm. Your name is very unique. Where does it come from? I was born in the month of the sun, and my mom loved the song “Morning, Noon, and Night” –thus Soleil Moon. Soleil is French for the sun. We heard that your mom is a kind, free-spirited lady. My mom is amazing. She was a single mom and she did an incredible job raising us. We were always able to be kids. You can see how close my brother and I are... How was that relationship like when you were growing up? Do you think having a sibling is important? My brother really helped raise me, and he was my best friend. We can’t imagine growing up without that. We also had a large extended family. My mom created a summer camp out of our house, so literally all the kids in the neighborhood would come and spend the summer with us. My mom was an amazing chef, so everyone came from all over. During holidays we had chestnuts roasting on the front lawn. It was great.

Do you plan on having more kids? I am totally open to having more kids. We have to work on the hubby. When I was little, I used to tell my mom that I wanted a hundred kids and she was like, “Great! Become a teacher.” I’ve always loved kids, and I live and breathe total happy chaos in our house, so I figure two or five is probably around the same thing. Speaking of “happy chaos,” that’s the title of your book, correct? Yes. The book just seemed like the perfect platform for me to connect with people on a deeper level, especially because I’m so involved in all these social media. It’s a cross between a memoir and a manual, and it talks about parenting, life, and family. I share stories and anecdotes from my own childhood, and I always felt like everyone got that parenting guide that I never got. It will hopefully make people laugh. I’m working with Dutton on it, which is a part of the Penguin Group. Speaking of family, you have been honored for your work concerning Alzheimer’s, which your own dad reportedly has. My father has Alzheimer’s, and I’ve been incredibly blessed to become a part of the Alzheimer’s Association. I’m an advocate for them, and it really means so much to me to be able to connect to people that are affected by this insidious disease. It affects millions, and for so many years we thought my dad was going crazy. He would put stick-it notes all over his house, to forget where he put his keys. He would lose his car. It started with those little things, and we didn’t realize what was happening to our family. We were torn apart as he lost his dignity and was being robbed of his character. It was heartbreaking. I was able to go to Capitol Hill to try and raise funding because we need to do something to take care of this now, and really try to find a cure, or we’re all gonna be in a lot of trouble soon. Not to mention the economics of it alone, they’re staggering. So many other places [countries] have a plan, and we don’t. Well said. We know your brother was also a child actor, but how did you know it was your calling as well? When I was little, I grew up watching my brother and my dad–they were both actors. I didn’t speak until I was 3-years old but when I started, I didn’t shut up. It’s so funny because I would hide behind my mom. I’d be watching my big brother act and when I was 5, I said, “Mom I wanna give this a try.” And she answered, “Oh, you’re so shy!” I guess in front

of the camera I was a totally different person who came alive, and it really gave me a chance to be creative. My brother and I would go and dress up. For us, any chance to make-believe was amazing, that’s why it’s so much fun. Every girl I speak to obviously knows Punky, and young guys probably enjoyed watching you. Did you feel any pressure at all? I love the character so much, and she is such an integral part of my upbringing. I see some “Punky” colors behind us. Yes! I think this line [The Little Seed for Target] is very inspired by Punky, actually. She’s really taught people to believe in themselves, and I think during a time where people didn’t talk so much about torn families, adoption, or foster care, she was this character who literally was abandoned by her mom, was left in a shopping center, didn’t know who her father was, and then found this loving, old man and his dog in an apartment. It was a sitcom, but it was in a time when shows had so much heart. You had Cosby, you had us and Silver Spoons, which were really groundbreaking in such a way of bringing heart to comedy. How did you and your husband, Jason Goldberg, meet? We worked together on a movie, and I had a huge crush on him and he totally played it cool. He knew that I was kinda fickle, so he’d be like, “Hey what’s up?” We became really good friends, and I told him about an idea of a movie that I wanted to direct and write. I pitched his company and they said, “Do it and write it in a week, maybe we’ll think about doing it.” I wrote everyday for 24 hours, and I FedEx’d my brother and he typed it up for me, dropped it off at their doorstep, and I went back to school. I was going to college in New York at the time. I got a call around a week later saying that they were going to make the movie, so I came back and we went to production and became best friends and started the movie. I never went back to school because I fell so in love with him. Family first, right? Yes. I also left school thinking, “When am I ever gonna get a chance to make a movie at 19 years old?” The youngest female director. It was pretty amazing. Would you consider yourself some sort of a renegade then, and how? I would say that whole period of living in New York–being young, wild, and fun. And also taking on this whole adventure as parents, because you’re trying to find a balance. For me, it’s so important to try to work from home. I feel like being inspired by my work has made me a better parent. Sometimes you take these risks in life, and you go for it. I remember having a vision of literally having aisles at Target. Basically manifest destiny. Create your destiny. It was my dream. When I’m asked what my end goal is, I would say it’s to be able to get this to everyone across America–being able for a mom in Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Arkansas to be able to walk in some place–like a Target–and find a piece of The Little Seed in it. In your first BC cover, you were featured on your second pregnancy and as a new mom to two kids. Can you tell us more about the girls now? It’s so exciting! I love BC, and that I get to do something so fun with the kids, my husband, and brother. It’s more fun than ever because I get to show what I’ve been putting my love, sweat and tears into. ago from cancer, but before that, we got to work on this amazing idea of what we wanted the house to become. We really wanted to fill it with the things we’ve grown up having here. We turned it from a duplex into a single-family home. I have a love for architecture and design, and I became the General [when we were building it]. We don’t even wear shoes inside the white floors. It’s crazy, but really so much of the toxicity that we bring into the house is because of what we you know have on our feet. You should wipe your dog’s feet off too, just in case. Yeah, I know I’m not very good at that (Laughs). What are things your daughters say and do that crack you up? Jagger and Poet are really into ET, Mary Poppins, and The Sound of Music. They keep me laughing everyday. There are so many things that come out of their mouth. You just hear these things, that are so young and weird, and you’re blown away. What physical and personality traits did they get from you and Jason? They are total opposites. Poet is an incredible dancer. She is so elegant, graceful, and stunning in all she does. She’s dancing her way through life, and she loves having the family together–family night and feasts together, and

I’m a big fanatic for the ‘80s. We also do Hip-Hop, or whatever it is that we have a good time dancing to. I forgot to mention that our favorite errand is getting ice cream. Getting ice cream? Awesome. The girls also come with me to work and to tour, we design together. They are my test models.
And I thought, “Wait a second. You go to college to get a degree for your career, and yet you have a baby and then they’re like, “Okay. You’re Good. Go home.” I’ve read books, but I really did not know where to turn. Social media doesn’t leave me feeling so alone. In between packing lunches and doing car pool, I get to do a blog, or a microblog with just 140 characters.
What is your proudest and most humbling parenting moment? It’s the little things. The other day, I walked into the room, and Jagger had her head on Poet’s lap, and Poet’s stroking Jagger’s hair. It melts my heart to know that I’ve done something right. Poet had her big dance recital, and I was weeping. Jagger loves horseback riding, and she gets up on that pony and she’s so into it. There’s those little moments of them sharing something, or telling each other a story.
What is the most interesting tweet you ever got? I once asked how someone’s life has changed in a split second, and the responses–whether it was losing a family member in a car accident, or the day they got married–were unbelievable.
You have more than 1.4 million followers on Twitter. How has online media changed or revamped your career? We heard Demi Moore was the one who got you hooked into it. It’s funny, actually. Demi sat down with me one day and she goes, “You gotta try out Twitter. It’s really cool, and it’s a great way to connect with your community.” We sat down and I did my first tweet and it was incredible. The first week, everyone really welcomed me–and within a month there was over a thousand people, and then next, a thousand more. I came up with my “Question of the day” because when I was a kid, I’d always ask people “Why?” I’ll ask the cab driver to tell me his life story, how many years he’s been married. My mom would say, “You’re seven years old!” I always had a fascination with people. I love learning and connecting with other moms. For much of my parenting, I did not understand how [when I had my first baby] I literally walked out of the hospital with just a, “Do you have a car seat? Okay you’re good to go!”

What products would you suggest for kids and parents? I think for clothing, The Little Seed is awesome. Probably 80% of Jagger’s stuff are hand-me-downs from Poet. I think it’s also being conscientious on how you recycle in your house, and how you turn all things into new. I love taking an old piece of furniture, and putting it into one of the kids’ rooms or nursery. A good John Hughes movie is probably the best purchase I’ve made. I just bought ET recently. The kids won’t stop watching it. It’s old school–bring old school back. If you could plant one little seed in the minds of America’s children, youth, and parents, what would it be? That’s a great question. It would be to do random acts of kindness for others. I feel like we’re coming into this incredible time of social consciousness where the gift to help and support each other is so incredible. I think that we really are next generation activists as parents, and we have this ability to create change. It’s not easy being the purported paramour of a married man—especially one who is a huge celebrity like Tiger Woods—and whether or not that was true is certainly water under the bridge for hot momma, Rachel Uchitel. Rachel is crazy about her daughter, Wyatt, and is currently amicably divorced from her second marriage. In this rare Q&A about her family, the tight-abbed, mom-of-one known for her enviable coif can talk all day about her wideeyed darling that has turned her into mush, her party days into baby swim classes, and why she’ll always choose the salon over being a DIY blonde.
Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Rachel Uchitel’s parents started cable television in the state after moving there from New York City. Rachel thinks back and starts our telephone dialogue with a New York accent I never did catch on, even after a few years of working in the area. “I have really fond memories of my dad—going to work with him and sitting in the television studio when I was a kid. I loved that—I was totally a daddy’s girl. Growing up in Alaska—it’s such a different place— it was very cold, obviously, and it was pretty dark. I remember it very clearly because I moved when I was 4 ½ because my parents got divorced, and I moved back to New York City with my mother then. Because there was such a separation between New York and Alaska, it’s easy for me to remember
the difference.” I ask about the untimely demise of her father to drugs when she was a teenager in relation to her aforementioned memories of him. “When I was 15 years old, my father died. He was a very successful man; he built his company way up and then ended up selling it. He actually tried to bring the World’s Fair to Alaska and almost got it there, and spent about US$ 4 million of his own money trying to do that. He was really passionate about Anchorage, and a lot of stuff happened where he and my mom got a divorce. He built
the only sports arena that they had in Anchorage at the time—it had hockey, boxing, basketball. He started to promote boxing, and I think he was really devastated after he got turned down for the World’s Fair. He got involved with some bad people and started trying some drugs. He was never a drug user and unfortunately, he died of a cocaine overdose when he was 44 years old.” “How did this affect you?” I blurt out. She must have been asked this a million times, but seems open to the topic. “I was at boarding school at the time, and so my headmaster had to tell

For the first time in your life, when you have a child, you realize what unconditional love is. It’s easy to talk about wanting unconditional love with your significant other or whatever, but it’s the first time you actually really experience that.
me—and that was, obviously, absolutely horrible to hear. That was a pretty horrific experience.” Rachel is also famous for being part of the show, “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” [Pinsky]. She relates what she learned from it all. “That was a great experience for me. I was there for a prescription pill and love addiction, and to this day, I haven’t done any prescription pills. That was a huge eye opener for me on how bad it is to selfmedicate. I have tons of friends that have prescriptions for Xanax, Valium, and Vicodin, you know, the standards that everyone has in their closets. I’m a huge proponent of never self-medicating nor taking those drugs unless there was a real necessity to, because mixing it with the wrong thing can lead to a major accident, if not death. In terms of the love addiction, [the show] really changed my pattern of how I have relationships with a man. After the show was when I met Matt, my husband, and because of the lessons I learned and the way I changed my patterns of behavior in relationships, I was able to have a normal, healthy relationship with him that led us to finally get married and have a child. So, I attribute being on Celebrity Rehab with a lot of
good things in my life.” On the topic of her notorious past involving a rumored involvement with golf star, Tiger Woods, and an alleged affair with actor David Boreanaz (I didn’t name names, just asked her whether she wanted to talk about past controversies) that turned many eyes in her direction, I ask if she still wanted to talk about it. “All I’ll say is, every single experience I’ve gone through in my life is a learning experience that I can use to teach my child.” Well and succinctly said, so we move on. She passes two ultimate assessments of domesticity: the test for diaper bag completeness, and fixation with baby clothes. “I have my diaper bag right next to me. I have four diapers, wet wipes, an extra outfit, pacifier, bib, blanket. For me, Neutrogena shimmer, clear lipgloss, and wait a minute, I have Mustela lotion which smells so good… like the best, like a baby. Oh, and I have a hat for her in here.” As far as her favorite clothing brands, she is excited about, “Janie and Jack. I also like babyGap, to be honest with you, they have really cute stuff. And oddly enough, Target has the best
selection of baby clothes. Forget all those really expensive baby clothes because first of all, they spit up or drool on them. You know you have to change their clothes for, like, four times.” Naturally, this wouldn’t be a complete parenting story if we didn’t delve into the embarrassing or crazy parts of the day-to-day. “There’s millions of funny things but what stands out is the first time I ventured out of the house by myself. I was just meeting a friend of mine for lunch, like a 20-minute drive away, and it literally took me 2 hours to get my act together to go there. I couldn’t figure out the stroller. I couldn’t figure out the car seat. She pooped in her pants the second I finally figured out how to put her in the car seat. And I couldn’t figure out how to unlatch her, so she was stuck in the car seat in her poopy diaper—and I was sobbing. I was like, “Oh my God, what do I do?” You know? And the funny part of that actually was that it was 3 weeks after I had given birth, so I hadn’t ventured out to the hair salon or anything. For the first time in my life, I got my hair color in a box from Walgreens or wherever. I was like, “Oh my God, I really wanna color my hair,” but I don’t have time to go to the hair

salon because I had Wyatt, and you don’t have 4 hours to visit the hair salon anymore at that moment, especially. So I colored my hair from this box, and you know, I’ve kinda been known for my hair—like a lot of people talk about how I have this long, great hair. My hair just comes out looking nothing like it does on the box. It looks like chocolate, beautiful brown on the box, and my hair comes out and it’s black. Like, what the hell is going on? Anyway, I didn’t wanna think about it because I didn’t have enough time because Wyatt’s bcmedia.ph
awake and I had to clothe her. Long story short, after telling you about how she pooped in her diaper and whatever, I finally get to this lunch with my friend. The first thing she says to me is, “Oh my God, I’m so glad you made it,” and she looks to me and says, “Why is your hair blue?” You know how an old person makes their hair so black that it’s like a blue? in San Francisco now. We went back to her house and she dyed my hair a normal color. She has a 1 ½ - year old so she’s like a professional parent and she was helping me with Wyatt. It was such a crazy day, but after that day, I knew how to use the car seat, the stroller, I knew how to change a dirty diaper on the side of the freeway, I knew how to do everything. And I learned my lesson, never to use hair color out of a box. I’m planning my schedule around taking her to the park, and the hour I want her to sit in front of Baby Einstein on the TV, and when she does her swim class—like those things come first before me planning my hour to go to the gym. Whatever the situation is, I put her schedule before mine, and I’ve never done that before for anyone. It totally comes naturally to me as it totally comes naturally to any parent.” Speaking of second nature, Rachel
falls into the bragging-about-your-babyevery-chance-you-get category as well. “You know how parents talk about their kids’ activities and brag about them? When it’s not your kid, you don’t care. But now I get it. Now, I understand! I’m so proud of her, and I wanna talk about her all day long.” I inquired about how they’re building a strong foundation for Wyatt in their home, so she can be protected from incidents such as getting involved in drugs. Rachel sounds pensive. “We’re raising her in a way that we’re very affectionate with her. We’re very handson, and we wanna make sure that she feels like she’s a part of a family, that she doesn’t feel isolated at all, and that she feels loved—I think that’s important. bc
