n Vancouver, the push to buy and support locally made goods is a year-round campaign, with plenty of weekend pop-up shops, street markets and neighbourhood shop hops.
At Christmas, this campaign is ramped up, with pop-up shops holding more permanent court (see the Local-E shop at 235 Cambie, from Dec. 2 to 18) and major social media campaigns encouraging the masses to buy handmade Vancouver wares (see the Shop Local Vancouver Facebook page that highlights local businesses and asks shoppers to “Occupy Local”). Not only are local shops great places to buy unique, one-of-a-kind gifts (these pages are proof of that), but the fashionable folks who run them are usually a good resource for help finding that perfect holiday outfit. After browsing the racks at local boutiques One of a Few (354 Water, 604-605-0685. Think wide-leg cranberrycoloured pants, ’40s-inspired pleated dresses , sparkly jackets, glittering accents and metallic anything (because really, when else — other than during the holiday season — can you get away with gold lamé?).
