f r o m t h e h e a d of S c h o o l Dear members of the BB&N community,

In this report, you’ll read about journeys.Whether big or small, journeys are the defining metaphor for the experience that is BB&N. Journeys of the mind as students engage with powerful works of literature or challenging math equations. Odysseys to the woods of New Hampshire or to locales around the globe to connect and serve. Journeys through years and from campus to campus, something I’m reminded of every September as it has become clear that our Beginner students continue to insist on eventually becoming Seniors. I believe that the most rewarding journeys in our lives are marked by a sense of challenge and an imperative to get out of our own element, to leave behind the familiar and the comfortable. That same framework influences how we as teachers, administrators, and trustees approach one of our most important obligations: mapping out what the future journeys for our students will look like. In particular, I’d call out three initiatives that fit this bill last year: the successful completion of the Middle School renovation, as well as the work put in by the members of both our Global Education Task Force and our Financial Aid Summit. With the reimagining of 80 Sparks Street, we see the beautiful result of the care that went into creating a campus environment that supports collaboration, team-based work, and habits of mind that will foster future success for our 7th and 8th graders. The

recommendations that emerged from the Global Task Force establish guideposts for BB&N to best guide our students to build their skills as curious, empathetic, globally competent thinkers, citizens, and, down the road, leaders. Finally, the report provided by the members of our Financial Aid Summit set forth steps that BB&N could consider to increase opportunities for children—no matter what their socio-economic status—to gain access to this great School and the journeys that take flight here. The essential common thread shared by all three of these major initiatives is the profound support they have received from you, the members of our BB&N community. Your record-setting philanthropic support this past year makes it possible for our School to live up to its ambitious mission: to prepare our students for lives of principled engagement in their communities and the world. I need to pause here to make particular note of a remarkable number: $3.53 million. That is the amount that was contributed by donors to the 2015-2016 BB&N Fund, eclipsing the previous high-water mark by a stunning 14 percent! Simply incredible. We are so grateful for your continuing, steadfast belief in this School, and for your extraordinary support of the journeys of our 1,022 students. Thank you, and happy journeys to all during the year ahead.

The BB&N Experience:

a J o u r n e y of a L i f e t i m e The word “journey” is often used to describe the experience of being part of the BB&N community.

For BB&N “Lifers,” it is a journey that begins in the Lower School’s Morse Building and ends 12 to 14 years later at Graduation. For other students, their journeys may have different entry and departure points and cover one campus or all three. And for all, their BB&N journey is a personal one they experience over months and years through acquired mastery or deeper knowledge of a subject, the honing of artistic and athletic talents, and the self-discovery they find through new passions, skills, and confidence. For BB&N faculty, their journeys can span decades like the 37- year career of Lower School Math Teacher Carter Donovan and the 33-year tenure of Upper School Art Teacher John Norton, both of whom retired this year along with several other distinguished colleagues after leaving their mark on many generations of BB&N students, families, and alumni/ae.

And of course there are the journeys of our more than 6,000 alumni/ae, whose paths beyond BB&N span the country and the world as they pursue further education, diverse careers, passions, and accomplishments. What unites these journeys are the shared experiences, connections with teachers and coaches, and friendships with classmates that began at BB&N and will last a lifetime. And what fuels these journeys are the commitments of time, talents, and philanthropic support from the many members of our community whose generosity is celebrated and recognized in this report.

To bring these BB&N journeys to life, we are pleased to share a selection of remarks and reflections of BB&N students, faculty, administrators, parents, and alumni/ae on various occasions throughout the 2015-2016 academic year; as well as descriptions of a few of the journeys BB&N students and faculty have had the opportunity to experience in their classrooms this year.

“This graduation and the diplomas these students will soon receive mark the end of one journey and the beginning of another….You’re leaving BB&N for something that is not yet fully formed. But you’re leaving equipped to make a difference in the communities in which you tread and the world in which you live. My message today is that you leave here with lessons, habits, and values that are not just important for getting you into college. What you have learned here is important to your School and your family, and yes, even our culture and our democracy…. “At BB&N you have learned the value of listening to—of hearing—not just some other voices, but all other voices. You’ve also seen the power of a community where everyone has a ‘place at the table’…. “Respect for this shared belief [in the importance of civility] can even be found in our School’s mission statement, whose most indispensable words I have long considered to be ‘principled engagement’…. “As you get ready to leave, I ask that you live by the habits of mind you learned here. And in these contentious times, I ask something more of you: that you take the civility cultivated within this School and spread it. Spread it to your communities. Spread it to your college campuses. Spread it among friends, and practice it with those you think of as adversaries.”

“BB&N is known for its amazing academics. But standing here today…our memories of BB&N will consist largely of the people here…and the experiences that we have enjoyed with them. “We’ll remember the teachers who went out of their way to meet with us before school, or during a free block, just to make sure we fully understood the materials. And the teachers who left their door open so we could sit down and talk to them whenever we wanted…. And we’ll remember our fellow castmates, or musicians…and we’ll remember our teammates, and our coaches who pushed us to work harder—win or lose. “Whether we came in Beginners, Middle School, or even last year… we’ve grown, we’ve changed, we’ve reinvented ourselves…. I think that what makes BB&N so unique is how unafraid people are about taking risks—and trying something new. Always evolving. Always looking forward. “So when we find ourselves in a new place in the fall, and as we span the globe in pursuit of even higher education, I know that we will remember what we have learned here. That it is important to treat the world gently and treat others with respect. That it is fine to fail as long as you fail big and you learn from that failure. And that, no matter what, every problem can be solved with hard work.”

A Tribute to John Norton

“For me and most of the department, John has been synonymous with ‘The BB&N Art Department’— for 33 years! “Many generations of students, teachers, and administrators have come and gone—and John was still here: making art, bringing kids to art, defending art in a highly academic school, and… keeping fresh his delightful enthusiasm for this alchemy of teaching art to young people. “He was also always ready to try something new with kids or take an interest that emerged in one group and move them more deeply into it. In that regard, he is both fearless and flexible: two excellent traits in a teacher. “John, you have taught me and so many of us what matters most: not so much getting all the little details or dates right, but the larger picture of being available to kids; of being kind, of admitting mistakes; of teaching with enthusiasm, finding fun in what you do, in enjoying the kids and the connections with other faculty; of finding the world a fascinating, changeable place, and wanting always to bring your discoveries to your colleagues and to your students.” —P arrish Dobson, Upper School Photography Honoring Upper School Art Teacher John Norton upon his retirement from BB&N

Grade 8 Closing Ceremonies

Grade 6 Closing Ceremonies Luncheon

“It is often not until much later that we recognize the seeds planted in Middle School—that’s the magic of this place.”

“Our lives are journeys, and it is you who are helping us along the way…. One thing I have seen many times is the moment of discovery at BB&N. Learning by experiencing and discovering is amazing…. Whole new worlds of capability open up. “One thing we have learned from our time so far at BB&N is that individuals have the power to do many great things. There’s the power of a teacher, who can open a child’s mind and heart with a dash of new perspective, and give them knowledge that will last a lifetime…. With willpower, perseverance, and determination, one person can change minds, change laws, change the way we think about the world. We as a class are finally becoming old enough to examine what we think is right, and we are capable of creating change…. “We as humans, as people, as individuals, are on a road. The road is not a finished one that is set out for us. It is paved by our choices, our actions, our goals, and how hard we strive to achieve them.Yet as people we have as much strength as our willingness to achieve. And we all have the power to make the earth a better place. It is just a question of what we are going to do about it, and how hard we are willing to work for it. And I hope that we will all keep in our minds the abilities that we have, our power as people, and how we can give back to the world.”

Lower School Th!nker Lab

“Over the past year, the Lower School Th!nker Lab has helped us continue to integrate inquiry-based, interdisciplinary student projects into our curricula. The Lab has become a place where faculty and students develop their metacognitive and critical thinking skills, and we have begun providing teachers with professional development opportunities through handson workshops. “With one year under our belt and the past three years of project-based professional development, Lower School faculty continue to dive deeper into faculty professional and curriculum development using design thinking—a method of asking a question, focusing on a user and need, and then prototyping possible solutions. “This summer, Lower School science teacher Maria Elena Derrien and I attended The Design Thinking Institute at The Nueva School in San Francisco, where we experienced how design thinking can improve learning and collaboration in and outside the classroom. The Institute allowed us to talk to

Jen Lavenberg with Jonathan Andreoli ’26 and Finley Long ’26 in the Lower School Th!nker Lab.

experts about creating hands-on, project-based, design thinking curricula, and learn how to train teachers in the process. “The Th!nker Lab continues to be a space that is helpful in promoting collaboration, creation, and motivating our students. Learning is about the journey and not only about the destination, and the Th!nker Lab is a space that helps us continue to be lifelong learners.” — Jennifer Lavenberg, Lower School Technology Integrator and Makerspace Mentor Edgar H. “The Identity Project was a B-2 teacher cohort effort to put into practice the important ongoing professional development in which they have been involved. Specifically, the Identity Project was an investigation into identity and how perseverance and effective feedback lead to Exemplary Work. Exemplary Work is a student’s best work and is the result of ongoing teacher planning and reflection, as well as effective feedback by adults and peers. The work is the result of student perseverance and practice using this feedback to reflect on work, and to create multiple drafts in an effort to improve. “Through the Identity Project the teachers and students looked closely at themselves and their classmates, finding their original perspectives challenged in the face of new possibilities. As we engaged in this process, we often returned to the questions: Why are we doing this work? What is essential about identity in our learning at BB&N? “This project demonstrates that identity is the space from which deep learning emerges. It is through this powerful sense of knowing, and being known, that our best selves emerge. These are the selves that are not afraid to question, to innovate, to advocate, and to imagine. These are the selves that take risks, safe in the knowledge that their community will catch them and carry them through the process. These are the selves who are not afraid to ask, ‘What might be possible?’” — Anthony Reppucci, Lower School Assistant Director

In January 2016, Upper School Advanced Photography students had the opportunity to use the three-story brick house behind the Nicholas Athletic Center, recently purchased by the School, as their studio. As preparation, they analyzed the psychological patterns and symbols of several fairy tales. The goal was to produce a series of related images that pursued a theme, possibly related to the obstacles and tasks of growing up as seen symbolically in fairy tales.

On two occasions, BB&N second graders in Susan

Kinsky’s class came over to work with the Upper School photography students, bringing their own self-portraits which they had made as part of a major Morse Building project exploring Identity. Small groups of second graders worked with the Advanced Photographers who all enjoyed the energy of this terrific group of second graders.

Nature Scouts

“The Nature Scouts started when a group of Second Graders took an interest in a neglected patch of dirt behind the playground area. The Scouts were exploring this patch of land, when I told them they should talk with Bev Malone, Director of the Teacher Training Institute and our resident tree expert. Bev started brainstorming with them, thinking of the possibilities of the space. She helped them plant annuals in pots and along the border of the fence, gave them a Nature Scout journal, and helped them research various trees. She supported them but gave them complete ownership over the project. This project was also very important socially to this group of students, helping them develop new friendships. “I loved getting the chance to work with Bev on curriculum. While the project existed mostly during recess, it gave me ideas of how to support emergent curriculum in the future. Jen Lavenberg also built off of the enthusiasm for the space, having the entire Second Grade think about different ways to use the space.”

“This past school year, I was lucky enough to receive a Technology Launch Grant to explore the use of a GoPro Camera in our Kindergarten classroom. I consider the grant a huge success. I created more videos than I ever had before as the GoPro allowed me to enhance both the level and quality of my documentation. “What was most exciting to me about this grant was implementing the GoPro using the same approach that the B-2 teachers have been learning through the Cadwell Collaborative. Part of the Cadwell philosophy is that children need high quality tools in order to produce beautiful and exceptional work. First, I introduced the camera and its accessories to the students, using the Responsive Classroom model of Guided Discovery to explore the camera and the various ways to mount it.We held discussions, watched GoPro videos, and brainstormed ways we could use it during the school year. “The first project that I used the GoPro for came about when we were studying our passions. We decided to create a class video depicting the students’ passions at school. In true Cadwell fashion, the children had to be the creators (come up with an idea for a passion they would like to depict), directors (choose a way to mount the GoPro based on the passion they chose), and camera operators. Giving the students the power to be the first ones to operate the GoPro was a special way to introduce the camera to our classroom environment, help them understand its possibilities, and show them that they are capable of amazing work.”

“In July I joined 11 other teachers from around the country at the ‘Fallingwater Teacher Residency: Teaching Through Architecture’ program at the Frank Lloyd Wright house, Fallingwater, in western Pennsylvania. In addition to being immersed in Fallingwater, where we learned about Wright’s concept of organic-based architecture, we engaged in a week-long series of activities emphasizing student centered, creative problem solving through design and architecture. It was an extraordinary opportunity to experience Fallingwater in a way most tourists don’t, and the material we covered will be wholly relevant to my teaching at BB&N.” — Laura Tangusso, Upper School Art Kindergarten teacher Ben Goldhaber with students Matias Egan ’28. “It was a true gift to be able to travel for two weeks without a worry in the world. There are very few times when I can truly ‘check out’ and be free from obligation, worry, concern, or even just a schedule! This was one of those times and it was remarkable.”

“We decided to go to Mexico for two weeks and chose Playa Del Carmen as our home base to explore the nearby ruins. Each day, we visited a new place or ruin and after a week-long exploration, we headed back to Cancun on the way to Isla Mujeres (‘Island of Women’) in the Caribbean Sea. My experiences visiting these places will be useful when our 6th Grade students study Colonization and its impacts in social studies.”

Student Trip to Swaziland and South Africa

“I am now considering tutoring kids in math and science, excited to spread what I have learned on this trip (conservation of animals and nature) to as many people as I can.”

This 11-day exploration into the wildlife, environment, and culture of southern Africa represented the first year that BB&N travel options for Middle and Upper School students included this part of the world in addition to eight other countries. Students willing to travel and interact with other people, places, and cultures are rewarded with the skills, inspiration, and motivation necessary for creating meaningful change. Several students provided the following reflections on their experience.

“I have definitely grown to be more aware and understanding of different issues around the world. It really put my issues into perspective when I saw how many privileges I have and how lucky I am.”

Donor Generosity and Strong Financial Management Support BB&N’s Present and Future

Gifts to BB&N, whether for current operations, endowment, or capital projects, are an investment in the School’s present and future. They represent a strong vote of confidence by our donors in the School’s leadership and an understanding of the importance of their support to sustain BB&N’s academic vision. The BB&N Fund continued its sustained growth in 2015-2016, reaching the $3.5 million mark for the first time in the School’s history and representing a 14 percent increase over last year’s total. Of this amount, more than $800,000 was contributed by BB&N alumni/ae, an all-time record. Equally impressive, parents of the Class of 2016 raised a record-breaking $1.1 million through their Senior Parents’ Gift, of which nearly $700,000 will be used to create the Class of 2016 Supplemental Financial Aid Fund to support the non-tuition portion of the School’s financial aid budget. Additionally, parents of the Class of 2022 contributed a near-record $62,000 through their Sixth Grade Gift to establish a new fund to support collaborative professional development opportunities for Lower School faculty. Both class efforts received support from nearly 100% of parents in the class. BB&N’s operating budget receives crucial support each year from The BB&N Fund along with income generated by the BB&N endowment, which had an estimated market value as of June 30, 2016, of $71.6 million.

22

BB&N Trustee and Investment Committee Chair Chuck Brizius P’19, ’21, ’24 shares the following comments regarding the School’s investment strategy and practices:

• T he School continues to maintain a low endowment draw rate to assist in the funding of operations. By doing so, the portfolio is able to add a greater percentage of its returns to endowment principal in order to maximize growth to support future needs. The School’s actual draw from endowment during fiscal year 2015-2016 was 4.32% of the market value on July 1, 2015.

GRADE 12/SENIOR PARENTS’ GIFT

Under the leadership of Senior Parents’ Gift Co-Chairs Ken and Vicky Lang, and David and Jocelyn Sand, and a dedicated committee of parent volunteers, the Class of 2016 Senior Parents’ Gift raised a remarkable and record-breaking total of $1,135,112 to support BB&N’s capital and annual giving priorities. The 2016 Senior Parents’ Gift included $692,854 to establish the Class of 2016 Supplemental Financial Aid Fund which will be used to support the supplemental (non-tuition) portion of the BB&N financial aid budget. In addition, $267,500 was contributed by senior parents for other capital/ endowment initiatives, and $174,758 for The BB&N Fund and other areas of the operating budget. We are particularly delighted that nearly 98% of Senior Parents participated in this special fundraising program as an opportunity to show their appreciation to BB&N for their children’s exceptional BB&N experience.
