NEW CO-OP DONATES ÂŁ500 OF GOODS TO FOODBANK

Staff at the new co-operative store are making an immediate difference to the village community by donating ÂŁ500 worth of goods to the food bank. Horsham District Foodbank has already fed more people in the last five months compared to the whole of the last financial year - 3,200+ since April compared to 2,900 in 2019-20. The Co-operative Food - Broadbridge Heath opened on Wednesday 9 September. Kathryn McCarthy, Community Support Lead at Horsham Matters which runs the Trussell Trust Foodbanks in Horsham District, said: "When lockdown began in March, we immediately saw an increase in demand for our service. We were already a very busy foodbank, having seen a 55% increase in demand the year before. "We are normally very fortunate and our community donations usually meet the demand but since April there have been a couple of occasions where we have had to purchase food. So this donation will be a real boost to our work." The new store, which is part of Southern Co-op the regional, independent co-operative, will include a permanent foodbank drop off point where customers can continue to make donations to help local residents via Horsham District Foodbank. Phil Craven, Store Manager at the store in Wickhurst Square, Sargent Way, said: "During the pandemic I have been working at one of our sister stores so have seen the affect it has had on the community and colleagues.

"So it feels significant that we've been able to offer 17 local residents new jobs in the store and also help out families in need via the foodbank. The Co-operative Food - Broadbridge Heath will be open everyday from 7am to 10pm and include an in store bakery, takeaway coffee facilities, self-service checkouts and Amazon Lockers. . 5

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows Girlguiding has now given permission for our units to hold outdoor meetings with a maximum of 15 girls- yeah! So, we have split the unit into 2 groups which meet on alternative weeks and we have created a Rainbow home pack for the weeks they are not attending. All the girls (and leaders) are really pleased to be back Before lockdown one of our leaders, Pippa, started her adult leadership qualification. Pippa had completed 3 out of the 4 modules and was due to complete the fourth at a Rainbow sleepover. Thankfully the 3 completed modules qualify Pippa as an assistant leader with Rainbows. Congratulations and well-done Pippa.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides As we have been given permission to hold outdoor meetings with the guides again we have split the unit into 2 groups meeting on alternative weeks with an at home guiding pack for the weeks they are not at a meeting. We have started this term by taking photos for the photography interest badge. The girls looked at different techniques to create stunning photos which they will produce into a display at home. Other activities planned for the term include geocaching and lots of activities in the dark; scavenger hunt, hike and orienteering.

Letters to the Editor Tell us you news and views about the village.

Mark you email “Letter to the Editor” and state clearly that you are happy for your letter to be published. Email: bbhmag@gmail.com

P. Thompson, of Charrington Way writes: The new public cycle track/walkway parallel with the A281 (Wickhurst Green across A281) is a very welcome addition for walkers, dog walkers and cyclists for Broadbridge Heath. As we take walks along this track regularly since it was opened to the public, we’ve noticed a very disappointing and ugly development over the past few weeks – thus: The uncontrolled overgrowth of weeds, bushes, thistles, brambles etc impinging on the track from one side in particular • Fresh and dry dog's poo and dog’s poo plastic bags thrown on both sides of the track • Empty water, squash plastic bottles and food cartons thrown by cyclists and walkers on both sides of the track • Plus a variety of bits of rubbish just thrown on either side •

The overgrown weeds etc. untended to, is unattractive enough without all the rubbish indiscriminately thrown on both sides of the track. Which authority is responsible for the maintenance of these spaces and how does the BBH council authorities educate the cyclists, dog walkers and general public walkers to desist from polluting this public area? Roger Stamp. Editor, ‘BBH Mag’ writes: Our thanks to P. Thompson for this comment. The ‘BBH Mag’ asked West Sussex County Council for their response; they are responsible for the whole project apart from clearing the litter which they say is the duty of the District Council. WSCC told us: “We have asked our contractor in the Broadbridge Heath scheme to tackle the weeds issue and we are aiming to arrange the landscaping remedial works for mid-October, subject to road space availability and any severe weather. We are also liaising with the parish council on wildflower seeding which, where suitable, the county council is supportive of and hope can be sown in the remedial areas”. 9

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club Having finally got Government and Football Association permission to start playing competitive football, our season suddenly came to a halt again just 7-days after it started, when 3 of our players tested positive for COVID-19. We started the season on Tuesday 1st August with a 3-1 home Emirates FA Cup win over Combined Counties Premier division side Raynes Park Vale, this was only our second ever win in the competition and victory meant a plum home draw against Isthmian League side Haywards Heath Town. Just 4-days after the FA cup victory the team were on the road for an away Southern Combination Premier division match against Eastbourne United but things didn't go as hoped with the home side winning by 3-0. Our Under 18 team also travelled to the East Sussex town on Monday 7th Sept when they played their first ever match in the FA Youth Cup and the team, who are comprised of almost all first-year players, came away with an impressive 3-1 win and will now play Godalming away in the next round on Monday 21st Sept. Things all went wrong the following day when we discovered that one of our players had tested positive for COVID and 2 others had symptoms, so after some frantic phone calls we made the decision to postpone all football until further notice. A day later 2 other players were tested positive and all 3 players had been in close contact with other players in the club, mainly first team players, so with 3 positive cases and most of the team now in self-isolation we felt we had no choice but to withdraw from the FA Cup, sad as it was, the welfare of everyone coming to the club was paramount and we are confident we made the right decision. Since then the football pavilion has been deep cleaned (decontaminated and fogging) by Athena Cleaning Services, and all the club's matches have been cancelled, although we are hopeful, we can start again this Saturday 19th with a scratch side away to Lydd Town in the FA Vase. Elsewhere we are still waiting for a date when the contractors will start work on the two outside pitches, the latest date given was to start late September early October but that almost certainly rules out any football being played on those pitches this season. Although the District Council have been helpful in allowing us to use the pitch at The Bridge Leisure Centre. Our Junior section kick off their season this weekend and we wish all the teams and management the best of luck.

CRICKET Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB By the time readers see this, cricket will be over for the summer as our last game is on Sunday 20th September. We have been really lucky with the weather, especially the Indian summer of the last few weeks and we had an especially lovely day at idyllic Wisborough Green on the 13th.

The August Cup went really well for our first team. Although we won only two of our five cup games, we only lost two of them by one run and one wicket respectively, the latter to the eventual losing finalist’s of our regional group. Standout performances came from new skipper James Round and Dany Kochikkat with the bat and Doni James and Alex Round with the ball. Meanwhile, the 2nd’s played some competitive friendlies, visiting some new grounds in the area and giving opportunities for the many new players who have joined us this season. As a result, over 30 members attended an inter-club match on the 6th after which we had a fabulous curry provided by some of the players – all under covid arrangements of course ! The only disappointment of the summer is the continuing vandalism of the area. In the last edition I mentioned dog mess, bottles, cans and bonfires. That continues but we have now had our expensive new batting cage vandalised. Some people obviously though it fun to cut through the back netting leaving a large hole. It now just remains for us to refurbish the playing square for the winter. You’ll see us on the ground during the last weeks of September scarifying and reseeding – after which we’ll be hoping for something not seen for sometime – rain ! Colin Case

St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath The Church continues to be alive and active! Our church building is open for private, silent prayer on Mondays from 1-2pm as well as hosting a number of online courses. One of these is the Alpha course which anyone is welcome to attend – see posters for details and email the church office to register your interest. No previous church attendance required! Sunday services

We are pleased to announce that some of our services have returned to the church building. We have a weekly communion service at 8am followed by an informal contemporary service at 10:30am. Clearly there is a restriction on numbers due to the need to abide by social distancing regulations, however we can accommodate up to 36 individuals and booking is via the church office. Our 10:30am service is also streamed via the Zoom videoconference service; and there is the opportunity to meet others as well as receive prayer via breakout rooms at the end. If you would like to join us for these online services you are welcome to email the church office office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk and you will be sent details. Once a month (on the first Sunday) we also produce a reflective service which is streamed on our Youtube channel, or which can be found on our Facebook page. You can listen to any previous services on our Sermons page at https://stjohnsbbh.org.uk/church-life/sermons-archive/ We have also restarted some children’s work. On the 1st Sunday of the month at 10.30 am we will meet in the church hall, and on the 3rd Sunday of the month we will be hosting a ‘families walking church’ – meeting outside church at 3pm. Again, if you would like to join this please contact the church office in advance. Events for your diary We anticipate organising two Remembrance events in November. On 1st November there will be the opportunity to remember loved ones who have died during the year through a simple service of reflection and on 8th November we still hope to conduct a formal Remembrance service around the Village Memorial. Details to follow. Also, look out for a life-size village advent calendar as we approach December! Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Churchill Way, Tullet Way, Wakeford Lane, Cheesmer Way, Old Wickhurst Lane, Cook Way, White Close, Adams Close. 12

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath.

Questions … I wonder what questions you have that are unanswered at the moment? When will we see an end to lockdown restrictions? When will there be a breakthrough with a vaccine? Why do I now feel it is acceptable to go to work in my pyjamas !? We all have questions and some of the most fundamental ones we all have relate to why we are here and the meaning of life. Alpha is an opportunity to explore life’s big questions together in an open, informal environment. Last year, approximately 30,000 churches and organisations ran Alpha with over 1.3 million participants. Alpha is a series of interactive sessions taking the form of a weekly online video to watch independently at your own pace, followed by an online group discussion on Zoom that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. The episodes unpack this, addressing questions such as: Why and how do I pray? How does God guide us? Does God heal today? Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to spark conversation and reflection. St John’s church, Broadbridge Heath, will be running Alpha on Thursday evenings throughout the autumn term, starting on 8th October. It’s all online and so for some it may be the opportunity you have waited for to ask questions without the pressure of a ‘live’ crowd. Although we do not confess to holding all of the answers, we hope that we are able to create an environment in which anyone can ask any question without fear of judgement or embarrassment. If you are interested please contact the vicar at: mark.lavender@stjohnsbbh.org.uk 13

Just as we were hoping to be able to resume our meetings, the rules on social contact changed and we cannot after all meet in groups of more than 6 people. We are still allowed to have our coffee mornings and afternoon teas in the garden, as long as we obey the rules on social distancing - and as long as the weather is on our side. Not to be defeated, we had already thought of some innovative ways of keeping in touch. For example, we can’t hold our planned painting master class so we’ve decided to do some sketching on the common instead and, as we’re limited to 6 people, we may need a couple of dates for this as it’s always very popular. For those of us who love to go a-wandering, we’ll still be able to meet for walks in reduced numbers and keeping our distance. But, as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, we’ll go back to virtual events. There’ll be our regular quizzes and, a new idea for the drama queens and thespians among us, will be virtual play-readings. We’ve already found a couple of plays – comedies of course, and there’ll be Brownie points for anyone who wants to dress up! I predict lots of laughter and silliness. Last month I mentioned things we could learn from the 1918 pandemic. Unfortunately, it seems that history is repeating and, although lockdown’s reduction in pollution produced a massive improvement to our environment, some people are now making things worse than ever. Sadly, just when most of us had recognised the dangers to sea and wildlife of discarded plastics, there’s been a huge rise in pollution from thrown away masks and gloves. I would never have believed that so many stupid, selfish people would just dump used PPE rather than putting it in a bin but the evidence is all around us….. It makes me ashamed. How about you? News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath Positive technical discussions between Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council’s Highways department are currently ongoing regarding the issue of HGVs and other vehicles using the downgraded bypass, bus lane, co-op car park and nearby residential roads. We are working hard to resolve this issue as soon as possible and we know how much this is affecting residents. Equally, work continues to find a solution to issues at the junctions of Old Wickhurst Lane and we will keep the pressure up on Countryside who continue to be key to resolving the issues. Residents who live near the Bellway site of Solomon’s Seal contacted us to raise concerns that work was taking place outside of the agreed hours, on a Sunday or Bank Holiday, for example. As a result, Horsham District Council have issued a breach notice which reaffirms that they should not be building outside of the agreed hours. We believe that this has worked and should be enough to deter them from breaking these conditions again, but we have further measures we can take should it be necessary. Finally, many residents have been in contact with us regarding anti-social driving consisting of speeding and drifting. We have fed this back to the Police who assure us extra patrols will be taking place. If residents see or hear anti-social behaviour taking place, they should report this to the police, either in the moment using 999, retrospectively using 101 or online, giving registration details of the offending cars if possible. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk 16

Dog-fouling and Litter Do you recognise this poster? It echoes one published by the British Government during WWI urging men to ‘do their bit’ and join up to defeat the enemy. The Parish Council is urging you to ‘do your bit’ in making our village a cleaner and safer place to live and defeating the litter-louts! During the past few years, the Parish Council has done several things to try and help the dog-fouling/ litter situation.

We have: Installed additional bins to those provided by Horsham District Council Provided free ‘poo-bags’ Run a poster competition with Shelley Primary School (the winning designs can be seen all round the village) Organised community litter picking sessions during the national ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ weeks Asked our Environment Officer to litter pick at village ‘hot-spots’ every week As a dog owner myself, I regularly come home with more filled ‘poo-bags’ than Lillee has generated, having picked up ‘deposits’ left by other dog owners on path and bridleways, plus the odd drinks can and crisp packet! It is irresponsible to leave such waste matter where it can cause harm. Even if a dog owner has run out of bags, it is a simple matter to kick it into undergrowth or at least cover it with leaves or grass, so it is not trod on, or carry litter home and put it in a bin. My golf club has just sent out a plea to all its members to repair pitch marks – their own, and at least one more – to keep the greens as good as possible for as long as possible. The Parish Council is sending out this plea to all its residents – please be responsible and caring when it comes to dog-fouling and litter to keep our village a clean and safe place to live. I am sure there are enough of us to outnumber the lazy and selfish individuals who are at present spoiling our surroundings. If you do ‘answer the call’ when you are out and about, please remember to wash your hands thoroughly when you return home! Thanking you in anticipation, Christine Knight, Chair of Recreation Committee 17

Since lockdown began on the 23rd March 2020, Age UK closed Lavinia House to users and all other village groups and activities were suspended. The support for Broadbridge Heath members moved to befriending/social phone calls, practical support with shopping and prescription collection and referrals to additional support/help, both within Age UK and with external partners. Age UK’s Village Agent (and local resident) Hayley is very generously funded by Broadbridge Heath Parish Council, who asked what more they could do to help in these difficult times. We joined the Parish Council meeting via zoom on 7th September and outlined how an extra two hours a week would help us to increase support to local older residents. Since lockdown restrictions eased, Hayley has been able to begin some limited socially distanced outreach work with individuals and the befriending calls continue, but with group meetings/activities remaining suspended, Hayley has begun to expand her work by going on socially distanced walks to support older residents who have become less active over recent months. With increased help from the Parish Council, we want to offer more support to those who are feeling lonely or isolated, or are feeling anxious about stepping out into a world that feels different and uncertain. I am delighted to say that the Parish Councillors were really interested in what we have been doing and supportive of what we are trying to achieve, agreeing to fund the Village Agent post for an additional two hours per week. This will make a very real difference to those Age UK can reach, so our heartfelt thanks go to them and all the residents they represent. If you’d like to help Hayley to support your local neighbours and friends, we’d love to hear from you! Our mission to help everyone to love later life, but we can’t do that by ourselves. MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Coronavirus and your money Financially, the coronavirus has affected each of us differently. For some it has been tough but there are also those whose income has been less affected and who have been forced to spend less. These individuals have managed to accumulate funds so this may be a good time to see how to make the best use of this. Firstly, these uncertain times are clearly not yet over. It is important that you have funds which are readily accessible. So what would my recommendation be for funds on short term deposit? The amount you should keep on deposit would vary but for many it would be between £5,000 and £10,000. I am personally keen on premium bonds. Savings rates are influenced by the Bank of England base rate which at 0.1% is the lowest level ever in the history of the bank. With Premium Bonds the interest earned is pooled and then distributed as prizes to lucky winners selected at random. I’ve heard them described as being like the Lottery but you can get your money back. Once you have a basic emergency fund, pay off any debts starting with the highest rate of interest. Check for penalties and whether you can repay just a portion without incurring these. If there any funds left over then you should look at using your allowances for tax-efficient investments such as ISAs and Pensions. Lastly, although low interest rates are bad news for savers they are better news for borrowers. If you have a variable rate mortgage this could be a very good time to obtain a fixed mortgage rate, as it could be argued that interest rates can only really go up from here.
