It’s been a very exciting season for both our teams this year; both being in contention for promotion right up to the last few weeks of the season. Sadly, a couple of poor batting performances in games that we probably should have won, cost both teams. In the end, they both finished 4th in their respective divisions - & only a matter of a few points away from finishing 1 position higher. Next season, we’ll hope to carry the form from the last games for each team both won comfortably & gain those promotions. The stats show how well they performed:

This term we have welcomed 3 new girls to guides. The guides have started on their Network skills builder. They began with situations and a toss of the coin to decide whether they could spin them into a positive or a negative situation and we have played a game to highlight privileges in different social situations. The girls are looking forward to an evening of rifle shooting, ready steady cook and a winter camp.

For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk

At the moment in our area, we are fortunate to have thriving Rainbow and Brownie units where girls enjoy a varied and active programme of activities, camps and outings. Our programme is the foundation of what girls do in guiding. There is a huge range of activities to try, plenty of badges to earn, and loads of ways to develop new skills. Our programme is packed full of fun, adventure and variety. It supports girls to broaden their horizons, challenge themselves and be the best they can be. At present these units are very popular and oversubscribed which has resulted in lengthy waiting

to accommodate the girls on our waiting list we would like to open a new Rainbow unit and a new Brownie unit in Broadbridge Heath so that we can give as many girls as possible the opportunity to experience the fun and adventure Guiding can bring. To help us achieve our goal we need more volunteers. All volunteers will be fully supported by existing volunteer leaders and will be offered all training required. We look forward to welcoming you into our friendly Guiding family.

Please do not hesitate to contact ggclemsfold@gmail.com for more information and we can also share with you our experiences of volunteering with our units. The role of a leader will give you plenty of opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, make a difference to the lives of the girls in our community, become a positive role model for girls and be part of a friendly team. We look forward to hearing from you.

We have welcomed 7 new girls to rainbows this term and we began with learning about nocturnal animals, guess the drawing drawn on their backs and listening to everyday noises and guessing what they are.

For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk Facebook page for the district: Girlguiding Clemsfold District.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I wrote to Horsham council in April and was given a case reference, but no reply. I have written to the council again in the hope they will now get in contact with me. I would be grateful if you could advise on the best way to proceed with my request for a cleaner Broadbridge Heath.

BBH Mag asked Broadbridge Heath Parish Council for a comment on this. They told us “Dog waste bins are installed and serviced by Horsham District Council and are installed to service public open spaces. Unfortunately, many areas south of the A264 still remain the responsibility of the developer. Please do get in touch with us if you would like to discuss further”.

I would be grateful if you could help the dog community on the south side of the A264. I currently live in Churchill Way and own a dog. The community in this area do not have easy access to a dog waste bin. I walk up to the dog waste bin on Pelling Way daily. In addition there appears to be two dog waste bins next to the village centre recreation centre.

9 A STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF BROADBRIDGE HEATH PARISH COUNCIL, CLLR. TERRY OLIVER

Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

The Chairman, Councillors and Officers of Broadbridge Heath Parish Council are saddened by the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time.

Her Late Majesty was a remarkable woman who served her country like no other. She led the nation with dignity, determination and compassion. While we mourn her passing, we should celebrate the life of Her Late Majesty and give thanks for everything she did for our country throughout her long and glorious reign.

Thesite.

The Chairmen of the Districts and Boroughs within each County were presented with copies of the proclamation, to be read to the people. The High Sheriff of West Sussex read the Proclamation on the steps of County Hall, Chichester on Sunday 11th September 2022.

The Proclamation of King Charles III

A copy of the Proclamation, as below, was displayed on our noticeboards and web-

In Horsham, the Chairman of the Council, Cllr Kate Rowbottom read the Proclamation from the Bandstand in the Carfax. Our Chairman Terry Oliver was in attendance. Following the Proclamation, the National Anthem played, before a call for Three Cheers for The King.

10

Communities were given the opportunity to come to come together to reflect on a moment in our nation’s history, when the reign of our longest-serving Monarch came to an end and our new Sovereign succeeded.

“Whereas it has pleased almighty God to call to his mercy our late Sovereign lady Queen Elizabeth II of blessed and glorious memory, by whose decease the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is solely and rightfully come to the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George. We, therefore, the lords spiritual and temporal of this realm, and members of the House of Commons, together with other members of Her late Majesty’s Privy Council, and representatives of the realms and territories, aldermen, and citizens of London and others, do now hereby, with one voice and consent of tongue and heart, publish and proclaim that the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, is now, by the death of our late Sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and rightful liege lord, Charles III, by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and of his other realms and territories, King, head of the Commonwealth, defender of the faith, to whom we do acknowledge all faith and obedience with humble affection, beseeching God, by whom kings and queens do reign, to bless His Majesty with long and happy years to reign over us.”

God Save The King

Proclamation of the Accession:

I have worked locally, and been involved in many aspects of the village over the years. I am still working from home post pandemic and no longer have to commute to Wimbledon which is great.

and have a very vocal Dachshund called Buster, and I apologise for anyone he barks at on our walks, I think he is just super protective of me when we are out, which isn’t often as he hates walks and will hide from me if he sees the lead in my hand!

11

I think we are lucky in the village with easy access to many lovely walks, and if some days I can’t quite manage longer walks, the top common area is easy to get to and there is usually something interesting to see.

Each month during 2022 we will be introducing one of our Parish Councillors.

MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS

This month we hear from Councillor Penny Hayles

When my children were of primary school age I was a governor of Shelley Primary school, and an active member of the friends of Shelley school to for several years, getting involved in many summer and Christmas fund raisers, often to be seen covered in candy floss. I was also a member of the Parish council many years ago, but had to leave due to family commitments, but re joined a few years ago. I also started helping out and BBH 1st Brownie pack when my youngest attended, and soon found myself Brown Owl, a role I enjoyed until I had to give up to help care for my father in Warnham when he became ill.

Born in Horsham, and originally a Warnham girl, I moved to Broadbridge Heath 28 years ago from Worthing to be closer to work and parents for child care. My daughters are now 30 and 23, and I am now lucky enough to have a granddaughter and help with child care myself as much as possible.

Over the years I have been quite active in village life and felt that I had something to give to the community via being a parish councillor. I am currently member of planning committee and feel very strongly about protecting the village from any more overdevelopment. I have also been on the recreation committee, but a recent health diagnosis has meant I had to cut down on my Icommitments.amadogowner,

The death of our late Queen led to many eulogies about her Christian faith and her servant heart despite having untold wealth. I read in one place how she gave us a lifelong example of what it looks like to handle power with the heart of a servant. Those who are in similar positions would do well to copy her example and yet she was not the original. The bible tells us that Jesus Christ, the man who spent his short life of ministry on earth healing, teaching tolerance and love and most significantly gave his life for others was in fact God incarnate God himself with all of the privileges and status of heaven. And yet, as Paul writes in Phillippians he “did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross”. Paul challenges us to have the same mind as Christ and to: “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than (y)ourselves.” This is the true heart of a servant and an attitude which, if we all had would transform our world and our society.

Our harvest service will be on Sunday 2nd October and will take the form of a one hour service for all ages at 10:30am.

As we move into Autumn there are some significant annual traditions and at St John’s we have a number of events that you may like to be involved in.

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender

Finally, we will gather, as in previous years at the village memorial at just before 11am on 13th November to mark Remembrance Day. This will be preceded by a short service in church, beginning at 10:30am, and will continue after the act of remembrance. As last year, we will be closing Church Road to traffic during this time. I pray that the events of the past month or so, and the dramatic change we have experienced in government and monarchy have not caused you alarm or concern. Please know that we have a God who loves us and provides a way to know his peace, comfort and light at all times.

15

As mentioned in the last BBH mag, we are starting the Alpha course on Tuesday 11th October an opportunity to discuss faith informally with other like minded people over a free meal. Contact the church office if you are interested via Asalpha@stjohnsbbh.org.ukmanyofthecommunity

will be out ‘celebrating’ Halloween on the evening of 31st October we will be offering an alternative perspective celebrating the original “All Saints Eve” which is a festival celebrating light and all of those who have died for their faith. So those out trick or treating expect to see a light on in the church hall as we will be declaring: “on this dark night we give you light!” There will be hot chocolate available for those who are out and about.

WI members have fond memories of the Queen at WI events and Royal Garden Parties and, especially at the WI Centenary Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015, when she was accompanied by Princess Anne, who is an associate of Gloucestershire WI, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who regularly attends Bagshot WI.

INSPIRING WOMEN

The WI was a constant in her life, as she was in ours.

One of the WI's longest-serving members, the Queen enjoyed her WI membership for almost 80 years. She joined in with songs and other activities at Sandringham WI every year, during her Christmas break in Norfolk, and she would pour the tea and serve the

Manycakes.

16

We are all saddened by the death of the Queen. The WI has lost not only our monarch, but a lifetime WI member.

Princess Anne lent a hand to cut the celebration cake, when the Queen pretended to struggle with the knife, and joked that that she knew it was a good, rich fruitcake as it was it was dense and difficult to cut!

Broadbridge Heath WI

Princess Elizabeth joined the WI in 1943, aged 17. Her mother was President of Sandringham WI until her death in 2002, after which the Queen took over. The Sandringham WI meets in the village hall at West Newton, just a stone's throw from Sandringham House. It was set up in 1919 at the request of the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary.

What a great fun night we had at our recent meeting which took the form of a social night and quiz. We welcomed several visitors who had come along to give us a try, so it was nice to be able to sit and chat and get to know them.

We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group, so if all this sounds like your idea of fun, then please check out our website and Facebook page or email our President Rowena for further information

It was lovely to see so many new faces, we hope they enjoyed being with us as much as we enjoyed having them and that we will see them again at our next meeting.

Catch Up With The Broadbridge Bombshells WI

Our quiz nights are legendary but this time we decided to do something different: among our usual categories we had a new ‘local’ section with questions about West Sussex which was extremely interesting, and a new 'saucy’ section which gave us a good few laughs… who knew the name of the hole in a violin was an F hole and that Mr Spock was required to have sex every 7 years? Or that the church wardens of Warnham banned the playing of the game of marbles in 1850 or that Wisborough Green held a Grand Prix in 1973… but racing lawn mowers!

17

The teams were all evenly matched and the level of knowledge was good across the board. But team ‘Sparkles’ made it to the winner’s podium by 1 point, and went home with a selection of chocolates.

With the sad passing of the Queen after an active life until the age of 96, I thought reflecting on some of the financial changes the reign of Queen Elizabeth II could offer some real perspective on the length and breadth of this time.

In the 1950s and 60s the highest rate of tax was 90%. When Margaret Thatcher came to power in 1979 rates were 83% and 33%, and she took action to reduce rates further as her beliefs were that the state should receive more of its revenue from indirect taxes such as VAT and National Insurance.2

House prices would be a good starting point. After the war, if you could afford to buy a house it was often a new one. In the 1950s the average cost of a new house was £1,891: around £70,000 in today's money. The average salary was roughly £365pa, so it wasn't easy to become a property owner, even in those times.1
