Shelley School Reunion (1950 -1970) On Saturday 5th October 2019, a group of about 40 former Shelley School pupils met at the ‘new’ school in Wickhurst Lane. Organised by Jenny Jones (Carr) the enthusiastic group were soon catching up on the intervening years. Some had travelled from different parts of the country and from abroad for the reunion, along with those of us who still live in the village or nearby. With plenty of tea and cakes and a few old photos, we were able to relive the days when the school was in the Guildford Road. Word was passed round that one of our teachers, Miss Penny, was still alive aged 101, making us feel young again. We were also able to hear news of others that were not able to make the reunion. In addition, money was raised for the current school amounting to £205.00, which will go towards buying equipment for their new Teaching Kitchen. This will enable the children to have cookery lessons (Food Technology) when it is all completed. A great time was had by all and a few photos taken to remember it. Thanks to Jenny and others for organising, as well as the Business Manager, for giving up her Saturday afternoon. I look forward to the next one! Report by Paul Muggeridge (Shelley School , 1960-1966). (More photos available from Paul)

1st BBH Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the village scarecrow competition. It was a joy following the trail around the village and seeing how much hard work and creativity we have in our midst. We hope you all enjoyed the Yankee Doodle masterpiece our Cubs and Beavers created. Our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have had a brilliant start to the new term, with a wide variety of engaging activities arranged by our magnificent volunteer leaders. The Scouts sadly said goodbye to Nigel in the summer, who has had to stand down as leader thanks to the ongoing success of his business. He has promised to stick around and help out when he can. Thank you so much, Nigel, for your years of hard work and dedication. Thanks also to Simon Collins, who has stepped up as Scout leader after 2.5 years as assistant leader with the Cubs. Simon has lived in the village for 15 years and has two children coming up through Scouts. He initially volunteered for a few sessions, but wanted to do more as the enthusiasm of the children really inspired him. Simon has since been joined by Russell, who has taken on the role of Section Assistant and has a daughter in Beavers. Alongside "Buc", who is on loan from Horsham District, the volunteer team for the Scout group is looking pretty strong. If you'd like to get involved with volunteering, we'd be happy to have you. A crack team of volunteers spent some of the summer decorating the Scout Hall, which is now available to hire for parties at the bargain price of £12 per hour. Contact chair1bbh@horshamscouts.com for availability. We will be hosting a Christmas Bingo shindig in the hall. And finally, we need a Secretary who can start now and we will be losing our Chair and Treasurer next year, so need people to take on those roles. If you can help us please email chair1bbh@horshamscouts.com for more information. —————————————————————————1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows Beginning this term the girls enjoyed an evening learning how to recycle paper into new paper and they have taken part in the Region Rainbows Go Wild event at Tilgate Nature Reserve. The girls had a great time meeting the animals and we made it home just before the rain!

We had a great time at our 70th Anniversary party. There were these classic cakes from the last seven decades: Bread Pudding - 1940 Pineapple Upside-down Cake - 1950 Black Forest Gateau - 1960 Carrot Cake - 1970 Chocolate Fudge Cake - 1980 Lemon Drizzle Cake - 1990 Cup Cakes - 2000 Red Velvet Cake - 2010 and, of course, a Victoria sandwich! On display were scrapbooks going right back to our first meeting in 1949 a record of our WI’s achievements, as well as a fascinating history of how things have changed for us and our village.

…And What A Pampering Time We Had! How knowledgeable are you when it comes to looking after your skin? Nowadays there is an increasing awareness of healthy living. Many of us are taking control, finding out about the products we are putting into our bodies, whether that is processed foods or chemical replacements for foods and sugars. But do many of us apply these concerns to our skin care and makeup? Are we doing ourselves harm as we slather our lotions and potions onto our faces …all with the promise of looking ten years younger with radiant glowing skin by tomorrow. Many adverts suck us in by showing how creams permeate through the skin to work deep down rejuvenating skin cells…blah-de-blah-de-blah… Many a time I’ve listened to this laboratory styled marketing and been convinced without much of a second thought, however, now my common-sense has kicked in and I find myself questioning ‘How can this be good for me?’ Surely as this process happens and the creams absorb into my skin, they also enter into my blood stream hitching a ride and travelling around my body. Luckily, our very own Bombshell Beauty expert, Claire, was at hand to talk us through and educate us on this subject. Claire guided us through some of the chemicals that are in many of the everyday, popular brands that adorn many dressing tables and bedside tables (I’ve now discarded mine, never to darken my door again!). Claire is very passionate about skincare and using good quality, healthy products with carbon neutral status. She also introduced us to the free App ‘Think Dirty’, a clever independently sourced tool which allows us to see and learn about potentially toxic ingredients in our cosmetics and personal care products. After all the education and enlightenment came the fun (and horror), as we removed our makeup. We used products endorsed by Claire, all smelling gorgeous and luxurious to the touch. We cleansed, we toned, we firmed up with a face lift cream (yes I bought all of these!) and we moisturised, ending our meeting looking fresh-faced and healthy. If you would like to find out about Claires’ products and her beauty services then have a look at the blog on our website or click on the link on our Facebook page.

Come and see us at the BBH Gala Association Christmas Craft Fair, Saturday 16th November 4pm-7pm, where we will be selling Christmas bakes and mulled wine! We meet on the Last Tuesday of the month, 8pm. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club Our new facilities continue to get some really good reviews on social media from visiting clubs, supporters and media and home attendances for first team matches continue to break our attendance records, averaging almost three times more supporters watching each game than there were last season at the Leisure Centre, and the number of our junior members attending games is also very encouraging. A reminder that all our junior members, coaches and officials do get free entrance to all matches, they just need to ensure they are wearing a Broadbridge Heath FC top so we know who they are. So if you haven't already done so why not come on down to the Countryside Stadium on a match day and have a look around. With ten league matches played the first team are sitting comfortably in mid-table on 14 points and we're still in two cup competitions, the Sussex Senior Cup and the Sussex RUR Cup. Our Under 23 team are sitting in third place in their division and the Under 18s are in sixth place. The Juniors are enjoying the new facilities although we are getting a lot of complaints about "Dog Fouling", it's not just the mess it makes but it can spread disease – especially in children and young people who play on the open spaces. So please if you do exercise your pets on the sports ground, please do take care to ensure that you clear up after your dog, Our next first team matches at The Countryside Stadium are as follow: 5th Nov Home v Peacehaven & Telscombe, Kick Off 7.45 9th Nov Home v Eastbourne Town, Kick Off 3.00 Website: https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc

CRICKET It’s going to be naturally quiet for us over the next few months as we have put the ground into hibernation. Visitors to the Top Common will have noticed that we have completely renovated the square - all done by members using our own machinery and led by our lead groundsman, Nathan Booker, who also maintains the machinery. All we need to do now is keep away the rabbits and worms and it will be ready for April next year – so long as we get a break from the current monsoon. The players, however, are not going into hibernation and they will again be playing in the competitive Crawley Indoor League. In addition, indoor nets at the Sussex Indoor School at Hove will be starting in January.

Off the field, the Club has run a couple of very successful fish and chip quiz nights led by question master Matt Tyson. Later, in December, there will be our annual Christmas Awards Evening. Unfortunately we have not been able to book Joffra Archer following his recent appearance at Horsham CC and we have also lost contact with the Sussex mascot, Sid the Shark, since he was last seen at the Village Fete. Finally, it’s our AGM on the 17th November. 13

News from your District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath

We are pleased to report that there seems to have been good progress on the road and new Neighbourhood Centre works in the last month, and we are hopeful that the all the upheaval will be coming to an end in the next few weeks. A Co-op, a Veterinary Clinic, a Dentists and a Nursery have been confirmed to be among the businesses that will soon be occupying the units in the Neighbourhood Centre. We were also pleased to hear from Countryside Properties that the long-awaited road surfacing is to start very shortly in the Buck Way, Sargent’s Way and Pelling Way part of the new development. This has been a source of huge frustration for residents and we will be continuing our work with the relevant developers, as those works happen, to ensure that that they meet acceptable standards. Horsham District Council is in the process of carrying out its local plan review and you may have noticed that a number of proposed development sites for the District are appearing in the local press. They include larger sites in Southwater, Billingshurst, Henfield and West of Crawley among others. They also include some smaller development proposals including the retirement village applications just outside the Broadbridge Heath boundary. At present these are just proposals and not all of them will happen. The Government requires that local authorities meet strict housing targets and this process is about deciding the best location for those houses along with vital factors such as infrastructure and affordable housing provision. As the process continues there will be an opportunity for public consultation. We will keep you updated on when these are taking place and we will be keen to hear your views to help us fight for what is in the best interests of Broadbridge Heath. As ever, it has been our pleasure to speak with and support lots of residents this month. If we can support you in anyway then please contact us using the email addresses below. Best wishes, Louise and Matt To contact your District Councillors for Broadbridge Heath: Matthew Allen. Parish Point of View Brian New, Assistant Priest, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk

November is a month when we’re encouraged to remember events in the past – “remember, remember the 5th of November…” and, of course, Remembrance Day. Very different things of course – an attempt to blow up Parliament and the end of the most brutal conflict the world had seen. We may remember other things too: the times when the world was less busy, when there were green fields where there is now housing, when there was less traffic, or when the roads weren’t closed and we could get to places more quickly! We may even remember times when Christmas music didn’t start in the shops until December, rather than in October! Yet, the difficulty with looking back too much is that we risk tripping over and bumping into things which we don’t see coming in the present. And, very often, the past was not nearly as rosy as we like to remember it. These acts of remembering are things we do with others; and building a sense of community and belonging is essential to having a flourishing place which feels like home and where we want to put down roots. It can be difficult, while there is so much happening, to see this and we all have a part to play, including us at St John’s, to help draw people together with a shared sense of identity. As Christians, we believe in God who loves everyone – regardless of who we are or what we’re like – and if we reflect that then we’re well on the way to building a strong community where people want to be and know they’re valued. And that is a community which doesn’t keep looking back to supposed better times, but looks forward to meet the future together. If you would like to join us, our Remembrance Service is at 10.00am on 10th November with the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 10.45. Brian ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Oak Lane, Sullington Mead, Heath Close, Churchill Way, Cheesmer Way 18

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Can you answer this question? This is the question that usually gets a blank face: “How much income do you need when you retire?” It’s an important one as it governs when you can retire. Turn it around. When do you expect or, better still, want to retire? Retirement needs to be planned for. You may need to prepare for at least 30 years without a work income in a period of life that really should be enjoyed. The next thing is to work out what you will need to spend. First look at your current expenses and exclude payments that would cease in retirement, such as debts and work expenses. Make sure you plan to repay all debts before retirement. Often people have come to us just before their retirement with mortgages still outstanding, in need of a repayment plan. It’s too easy to put it off, but the earlier you seek help the easier the solution. Another reason is that the longer the repayment period the less the monthly payment. In the early years of retirement you will probably do more, as generally you are fitter and healthier and this should also be factored in. Once your expenses are clarified, confirm how much income you will have coming in. It’s simple to obtain a state pension forecast (online* or by post) of when and how much your projected state pension will be. Then look at all the other income you will have including pensions. People often seek advice armed with a number of different Personal Pensions they wish to consolidate. Each pension plan needs to be carefully assessed, as there could be valuable benefits within the individual policies. For your peace of mind we offer a free initial consultation, without obligation, to see how we could help you. * https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions. www.monetarysolutions.co.uk To discuss the above or any other financial matter, please call us on 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk.
