THE BBH GALA ASSOCIATION HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY! The BBH Gala Association was set up over 20 years ago by a group of like minded people to run community events in the village…. In recent months they have been busy providing a wide range of events and other benefits to the village. Best of all there is the return of the much loved (and much missed) village fete—due to take place on Broadbridge Heath Common on Saturday 2nd July. And they have also been..

…. Planting trees in the village as part of the Queen's Green Canopy for the platinum Jubilee 2022 …….. Running the very popular Easter Egg Trail (did you win an Easter treat?) ….. Holding a Nearly New Sale in March. Working in partnership with the Broadbridge Heath Parish Council to prepare for the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations on 5th June.

Congratulations to the Gala Association team and the whole village thanks them for their efforts… see you at the fete in July ! 3

I mentioned last month, that we’d be having a go at another play and here’s Yvonne, our director, getting us all organised. Our latest effort, entitled ‘Changing Rooms’ had us all in a large department store seeking a suitable dress for a bride to be, ‘assisted’ by the cast (pictured below). They included a condescending member of staff, an overbearing mother-in-law to be a young woman and her bored boyfriend and a doctor who was just trying to find the right sized jeans…. Needless to say, everyone had an opinion! Once again, we had great fun, despite a diminished audience, as some of our members were not well. Here’s wishing them all better soon. If you’d like to come to our next meeting, it will be earlier than usual, at 12.30, as we’ll be tucking into a ploughman’s lunch while we discuss a resolution, voted for by 22,683 WI members, to raise awareness of the issues facing women and girls with ASD and ADHD, Both of which are under identified, under diagnosed, misdiagnosed and under supported. We meet at St John’s Hall on the second Tuesday in the month. So do pop along, or get in touch if you’d like some more information: Broadbridge Heath WI Email: BBHWI@uwclub.net or phone Jacqui on 01403 754718 or Maureen on 01403 268963

Stop Press: Make a note in your diary to come and say hello to us at the BBH Summer Fete on 2 July! There’ll be cake……. 8

The Broadbridge Bombshells WI Our last meeting was a triumph for the tastebuds when local rum distillery The Custom Spirit Company visited us to tell us all about their amazing products, and how lockdown gave them the time to realise their dream of developing, producing and marketing their own blended rums. During the talk we had the opportunity to taste all four delicious rums and then have a cocktail or two whilst finding out how two lads with a passion for rum had created a successful business in a little over two years. Blends like Mojo, Rumrise and Breakfast Special have become really popular due to their deliciousness and versatility and the cocktails are a knockout. We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group, so if all this sounds like your idea of fun, then please check out our website and Facebook page or email our President Rowena for further information email: bbhwi1951@gmail.com website: www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk/

Hayley is our Age UK, West Sussex, Brighton & Hove (AUKWSBH) Village Agent and she has worked in the village since 2019 and will be recognised and known by many for the work she does. The Parish Council continues to sponsor the AUKWSBH Village Agent to support our older residents. I had the privilege of joining Hayley last month for several of her visits to residents in the village. Our first stop was to Gillian at her home, where Hayley and I were welcomed with a big smile! Gillian has lived in the village since the 1960s and was happy to share with me how she’s seen the village evolve and grow. It was evident to me the joy that Hayley’s visit makes to Gillian, which she does on a weekly basis. In Gillian’s words “Hayley does a marvelous job and is really appreciated”. Three other doorstep and garden visits were made with chats in the sunshine before another home visit to Olleen (photo above). 11

Village Agent Hayley doesn’t just provide her obviously welcomed visits, she also connects older residents to other suitable AUKWSBH services that offer more practical help and support too. The regular “Cuppa & Chat” monthly meet is held at the Shelley Arms Pub, with the next meet up planned for Tuesday 10th May at 1.30pm. The Parish Office will open its doors for the June Meet on Tuesday 7th June. A trial “Games” afternoon is planned to commence shortly led by Hayley; further details will be shared soon. If you think that you, or a neighbour, relative or friend would benefit and like Hayley’s support through AUKWSBH, please do get in touch at hayleyd@ageukwsbh.org.uk For more details about AUKWSBH services, you can visit the website www.ageuk.org.uk/westsussexbrightonhove Olivia — Assistant Clerk

Community Showcase at our Annual Parish Meeting

All residents are invited to our new Parish Office, Sargent Way, to join the showcase on Thursday 26th May 6 — 8pm. Chairman, Terry Oliver will address the Meeting at 8pm. Further details will be shared on our website and Facebook page. 12

MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS Each month during 2022 we will be introducing one of our Parish Councillors. This month we hear from Councillor Sarah Chandler. My name is Sarah Chandler, and I have lived in the village since late 2019 - you may remember that last winter I wrote a small introductory piece about myself as a new Parish Councillor in the Broadbridge Heath Newsletter. My background is in horticulture, so I take particular delight in spotting whatever shrubs and plants other residents grow in their front gardens as I walk my dog around the village, the massed spring bulbs, the summer wildflower meadow and the many amazing trees that are our legacy from past gardeners. We are lucky to have so many green spaces in and around the village which need to be protected and managed both now and for the future. I am especially pleased that the two allotment sites are nearly ready for occupation, and that later this year the Ducky Pond is to be cleared and planted to improve water quality and encourage wildlife. Recently, I have been privileged to dip into Jonathan England's book on the history of Broadbridge Heath which gives an ever richer and more vivid understanding of where we live. The development of Wickhurst Green revealed that Broadbridge Heath has been lived in since Paleolithic times. There have been some changes since then! Indeed, places are in a constant state of flux, but it is people who are the heart of the community and that remains a powerful constant. As a member of the village and of the Parish Council I am delighted to help and assist and to be part of this current era in our history. Sarah

Vacancy on the Parish Council Broadbridge Heath Parish Council needs new team members! If you think you would like to take the wishes of the Parish Council forward and are over 18 years of age please contact the Clerk on 07716 130103 or email clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk.

Being a Councillor What is a councillor? Councillors are elected to represent an individual geographical unit on the council, known as a ward or parish – in Broadbridge Heath it is the entire parish. They are generally elected by the public every four years, but there are currently 3 vacancies on the Parish Council. What do councillors do? Councillors have three main components to their work. 1. Decision making - Through meetings and attending committees with other elected members, councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented. 2. Monitoring - Councillors make sure that their decisions lead to efficient and effective services by keeping an eye on how well things are working. 3. Getting involved locally - As local representatives, councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. These responsibilities and duties often depend on what the councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available, and may include: • Representing the Parish Council at meetings of associations and organisations • Going to meetings of bodies affecting the wider community • Taking up issues on behalf of members of the public How much time does it take up? Quite often councillors say that their duties occupy them for about an hour a week. Obviously, there are some councillors who spend more time than this - and some less, but in the main, being a parish councillor is an enjoyable way of contributing to your community and helping to make it a better place to live and work. As a councillor representing your community you will help keep it a great place to live and work. You will be supported in your role and will be expected to undertake training. You should be comfortable working electronically. You should have a positive outlook and a can-do attitude and be willing to work as part of a team. If after reading this notice you are interested in making an application please contact the Clerk, Lucinda to the council using the above details.

CRICKET BROADBRIDGE HEATH CRICKET CLUB

By the time you read this article, we will hopefully have started the 2022 cricket season. We have a pre-season game at Scaynes Hill on Saturday 23rd April, followed by an inter-club game at the Top Common on Sunday 24th April. This is assuming the weather continues to remain dry and sunny; and we all know that April and the start of cricket usually means the rains will come. During the closed season we have been undertaking drainage work on the Warnham end of the Top Common, to hopefully improve the playing surface for the start of the season. Historically, this end of the ground can be very wet during March and April. Early signs are good. This will also make the area better for those who use the Top Common to exercise themselves and their animals. We are also planning more work in the Autumn to level this area. As for cricket, we continue with two teams in Sussex Cricket League; the 1st XI playing in Division 7 West after sadly being relegated at the end of last season; the 2nd XI playing in Division 11 West (North). We also have a team in the Sussex Cricket League Cup, plus two teams in the midweek Sussex Slam. Even though we have managed to sign a few new players in the closed season, we are still looking for new players to come and join us; especially those living in the village. Our training sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings, from around 5:30pm, at the Top Common. If you would like to come along and see what we are all about, please contact Tim Wells on 07740101983, or email him on timbo66@btinternet.com. Our home fixtures for this month are as follows: Saturday 30th April 2nd XI v Billingshurst 3rd XI Saturday 7th May 1st XI v Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching 2nd XI Sunday 8th May T20 Cup v Middleton 2nd XI th Saturday 14 May 2nd XI v Warnham 1st XI Saturday 21st May1st XI v Crawley Eagles 3rd XI Saturday 28th May 2nd XI v Roffey 4th XI There will also be Sussex Slam matches during the week, but the dates are still being confirmed. All our fixtures can be found on our website at www.bbhcc.co.uk. ADVERTISING RATES

I recently married a couple from the village and was reflecting that love is the most powerful force in the world. The reason has to Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender do with the source: God himself. There’s an old poem that says, “Where true love is found, God himself is there.” And that love which is unselfish and sacrificial changes lives. That’s why it’s so powerful. The power of love lasts forever. As the bible says, Love never fails! It never fails because it is from God. That’s the type of love we need to have for one another. Another passage from the bible says: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth”. That’s not to say we should have our head in the clouds, but we are to have an eternal perspective. Think long-term in everything you say and do. Think about the power of forgiveness. Contrast the feeling of resentment we feel when we don’t forgive or the feeling of guilt when we hurt someone, to the freedom and joy we feel when either we or they say, I forgive you and I love you. Love puts others first. It has emotional intelligence. It is counter cultural. Our culture is always me orientated. Me first then if I have anything left, I can give something away. But love gives value to others. And it is not a value which goes up and down with the market value depending on who is in vogue, how much people do for us or how kind they are to us. Perfect love is unconditional. There is a parable in the bible about a woman who loses a coin. She is so frantic that she searches the whole house until she finds it. And so, the value of the missing coin is one that the woman places on it, not the value the market of the day placed on it. The problem is that our culture evaluates and gives value to individuals very differently to how God does. We assign value to behaviour. We judge others according to our own market value. We overlook the fact that they have a meaning to God of infinite value. But our ‘stock’ doesn’t go up or down like market value. You see a market works on the fact that there is a finite amount of something. But God is not limited in his love! There is enough for everyone. Because God is love! We need to know our infinite value to God and love others in the same way. You are his priceless coin no matter what others ascribe in value to you. No matter how well you think you are performing! And that’s how we should love one another. So, I invite you, to recognize the love which is God’s infinite, unconditional love for you. Know that you are loved forever by him and in response love others in the same way.

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath What if…

Covid restrictions are now disappearing and while life is quickly returning to “normality”, I think it's important to reflect on the impact it’s had. From conversations I’ve had about the pandemic it seems many people now realise how quickly things can change. The first news of the virus was at the end of 2019 but by the end of March 2020 we were in lockdown, and this has certainly made me realise the swift impact of the crisis. While we plan for a long healthy life it's important to remember that things can happen along the way and this has shown how quickly our lives can be affected. During the pandemic we saw many people suffer death, job losses and sickness. We all had different experiences of the virus and certainly some people are still suffering. For the luckier ones it's important to realise that it really was pot luck if you were in an industry that was not badly affected. When we plan finances we use what we call “what if” situations to see how individuals’ finances would fare under different circumstances. So if you weren’t badly affected by the pandemic, why not sit back and consider “what if” this hadn’t been the case, based on the stories of others who did not fare as well as yourself during this time. If you realise that in different circumstances you would have had issues coping financially, maybe you should consider some financial planning to reduce this risk if this happens again in the future.
