BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club The Club has waited 100 years to get football facilities of our own and 7 months after realising that dream and taking ownership of our state-of-the-art clubhouse and ground we're hit by a global pandemic and have to close until further notice. It's a difficult time for everyone and despite really missing our beautiful game the health and safety of everyone is far more important than playing football which will return when it's safe to do so. Since closing the club house the Football Association has declared the season for all our teams "null and void" a decision that has been criticised by some clubs, especially those in promotion places or on cup finals but for those clubs battling against relegation it came as a welcome relief. The Club have appointed Chris Simmons as our new First Team Manager, Chris a former Heath player is very well known in the local area he immediately appointed Kristian Sorensen as his Assistant and Gary Newman as First Team Coach. The Club are also seeking a new Under 23 Manager and we've received applications from all over the world, Brazil, Germany, Australia and several African countries to name just a few, we have no idea how that application found it's way to such exotic places but we had to decline all their applications but we still have half a dozen very good candidates from the local area to interview. We have had some bad news recently when we learnt the two outside pitches, used mainly by the junior teams, were in very poor condition and in need of major renovation after only 4 months, September to January, of use. The pitches had been playing extremely well and there were plenty of times when most matches in the area were called off due to waterlogged pitches but we were still playing matches on the well drained surface. Suddenly in mid-January a small area of grass started to die and over the next few weeks it spread across the ground leaving large areas baron, the District Council called in an expert to analyse the soil and we discovered that not only was there a major grub infestation but the samples taken showed that the pitches needed major work to bring them up to the standard they should have been before handover. So we now have to wait on tenterhooks to see what options are open to the council, the worse case scenario would mean completely stripping the ground and relaying it, that scenario could mean there will be no football played at all on those pitches next season. Should that happen the next question will be where will our junior teams play and where would our senior teams train, for the time-being we'll just have to wait and see. To find out more about Broadbridge Heath Football Club, please check out our website at https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc Meanwhile, Stay Safe, we will meet again don't know where and don't know when but hopefully it will be at the Countryside Stadium for a pre-season friendly against Charlton FC in July. Regards Andy 6

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB

http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp Crikes, what a change in the weather and everything else since I last wrote our article. One of the very few good things to have come from the virus and its lockdown is the fantastic weather we have been enjoying which, hopefully, has helped everyone cope with the life changes arising from the pandemic. Sussex, through the English Cricket Board (ECB), has notified that local cricket will not be starting before the 6th June. To ensure we are ready immediately it does start, the groundstaff team have been allowed to work individually on the ground. Unfortunately, that team is depleted as two members are unavailable because of their vulnerability so the burden has fallen on Chairman Tim Wells, ground lead Nathan Booker, 2nd XI Captain Ian Stocker and Grant Ovington. The four of them are doing a fantastic job on rolling, mowing, strimming and, yes, watering too ! Who would have believed it after the winter monsoons. Many visitors to the Top Common will have noticed that the fallen 100+ year old oak tree has now been removed. For that we must thank the Field Place team on whose land the tree was rooted. They not only arranged the tree surgeon but also took away the remaining trunk and tidied up the area for which we are very grateful. Finally, the ECB have notified the availability of grants to clubs, not only as a result of the winter storms but also as a result of the loss of income this summer. Our Ian Stocker, having recently joined the ranks of the semi-retired, has done some great work in presenting our applications, with some success already which will help with the improvement of the ground. Meanwhile, please stay safe and follow the restrictions - but enjoy the fabulous spring countryside during your daily exercise. There are some great walks in the village area, for example down Old Wickhurst Lane and the Warnham deer park in the opposite direction. Colin Case

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. The new Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month, I wanted to just give a few thoughts on life during the coronavirus lockdown and the opportunity it has presented to us. It would be very easy to make a long list of all of the things that we are missing out on: time with family, opportunities to work to support others, key events and celebrations. I myself face the prospect of celebrating my fiftieth birthday in lockdown and was disappointed not to be able to run the London Marathon on 26th April having trained for so many months. But of course, these trivialities fade into insignificance in the light of the loss than many have suffered because of the spread of the virus. And because this dangerous virus is passed on through contact with other people it has the potential for us to think very differently about other people outside of those with whom we live. We could easily fall into the trap of seeing other people as a threat to us – to our very health and survival. I’m sure we’ve all felt it as we pass others in the aisle of a shopping centre or on a narrow footpath. And there is a real danger that we become isolated and distrustful of others because of the apparent threat that they can bring. But rather than harbour thoughts of anger, I want to challenge us rather to take it as an opportunity to see others as life giving not life threatening. To appreciate the value of each life that we encounter. To practice generosity and empathy and appreciate that the other person is probably feeling as vulnerable as we are. To know the power of a simple smile.

Jesus said “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). We all know the gratitude that we feel as individuals when someone is kind and generous to us, when they give us respect and show compassion. And how wonderful it is every Thursday at 8pm when we show gratitude for our frontline workers. Let’s use this time as an opportunity to resist the feeling of self-protection and show love for others in the way that we interact with them. We can still be sensible and diligent about our personal hygiene as we seek to bring abundant life to those around us. God bless and protect you. Mark Lavender (The new vicar of St John’s church, Broadbridge Heath) ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Church Road, The Orchard, Corsletts Avenue, Stanford Way, Thelton Avenue, Bearsden Way. Wickhurst Gardens. 9

How much can change in such a short time. There we were with a wonderful programme planned for the whole year and now we’re all in lockdown. A crisis like this always brings out the best in people and our members have been keeping in touch by email and phone and doing all we can to stay positive and cheerful – we’ve been sharing stories and poems and looking forward to the time when we can all get back together again.

Some of us have been sewing scrubs laundry bags from pillowcases and duvet covers donated by members, others are helping out with shopping, playing games online or getting on with all those jobs we meant to catch up on but never had the time. Those of us lucky enough to have gardens are pottering and enjoying lovely weather – and the beautiful, pollution free, blue skies. There is so much to be positive and cheerful about. The hedgehogs are awake and clearing their food bowls every night. Birds are really busy now with nesting and new chicks, and last week, as I watched them chucking their least favourite seeds off the feeders, a field mouse popped out of the hedge to collect what they’d discarded. I spent ages just watching…. There have been so many reports of wildlife reclaiming the environment, I hope we can learn from it. As I said, these events bring out the best in people and there is much to celebrate. Is there a single person who hasn’t been inspired by Captain Tom’s daily fundraising walks for the NHS or by uniting as we clap for carers and key workers every week? And let’s not forget our amazing supermarkets, local shops and businesses that keep going for us. The posties and couriers, the milkmen, the volunteers and all the other wonderful people who are making sure we are kept safe and supplied. Many of us have been reminded of the importance of making time to keep in touch and of what it’s like to miss our friends and family. This will pass and when it does, let’s remember to apppreciate just how much pleasure there is in simple things like meeting up for a cup of coffee – and cake, of course! Dear Residents, We hope you are keeping safe and well during this period of uncertainty. It has been so encouraging to hear that the established network of volunteers has been working well, aiding residents with shopping and prescription collections. The Parish Council is grateful to all those continuing to offer their support to others in the community. We would like to reassure residents that our staff and members are endeavouring to provide support and continued service to the community, whilst following government guidelines. These guidelines are updated regularly and can be followed by visiting www.gov.uk/coronovirus We are in the process of adding an information ‘hub’ to our website, providing a range of resources for all residents to access for support and advice. We would like for this to include links to the community organisations in Broadbridge Heath who are continuing to support the village in so many ways. Please email the Clerk clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk . To access the Information Hub please visit our webpage www.broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk We plan to hold a virtual Parish Council meeting during May. Staying well in unprecedented times - Top Tips (Adapted from The Royal Society of Occupational Therapists) Establish a daily routine. Routines provide structure and purpose. Balance your weekly routine so you have a good mix of activities and chores that have to be done, rest and leisure. Think about which regular activities are most important to you. What are the important elements to these? Can you adapt them to carry out in the home? We have all seen TV clips of people exercising with a can of beans in each hand! Set daily goals to provide purpose and a sense of achievement. This might include working through that list of the things you keep meaning to do but never get round to? Just think of that sense of achievement when you have done it. Identify the triggers that make you feel low and look for ways to reduce or manage them. We have lived long enough now to know what sets us off or gets us down. Acknowledge this, it’s ok and perfectly normal to have these feelings and then steer yourself to do something more nourishing. Talk with family, friends and neighbours to help them understand how you feel and how they can help. Remember that it does us all good to have a chat with someone else to see how they are doing and it also provides us with respite from our own anxiety. Take care of yourself. Eat and drink healthily with plenty of fruit, vegetables and water to support your immune function and energy levels. Give yourself a treat, a bubble bath, comforting TV, sit in the sun with a cup of tea, smell the roses, watch the birds‌

Avoid staying still for too long. Exercise and regular movement will maintain fitness and strength. Use it or lose it! Put on a favourite CD or the radio and dance while no one is watching! Have a good sleep routine. If you are struggling, try to avoid tea and coffee in the late afternoon and evening, take a bath, listen to gentle music or do some deep breathing exercises. Some people recommend keeping a journal or a gratitude log, write down those thoughts and drift off! Keep in touch. Arrange to speak to someone most days on the phone, or over the garden fence. A neighbour or friend will appreciate your call. Please remember that Age UK Horsham District Tel: 01403 260560 and Silver Line Tel: 0800 470 8090 are there to talk to too. Age UK Horsham District is a registered charity, number 1085988. Registered address: Lavinia House, Dukes Square, Horsham, RH12 1GZ 13

News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath We hope that you have been keeping well at this unprecedented and very difficult time. We know that some of you have been having a particularly hard time and our thoughts really go out to you. We want to make you aware that we are still very much available to be contacted so, if you think we can help you in anyway or point you in the direction of someone who can, then please do contact us. Let us know if you would prefer to speak face to face and we can set up a video call. You can also visit www.horsham.gov.uk/coronavirus for more information on where you can find support at this time. The work of the Council continues, and we recently attended our first virtual Planning Committee and Full Council meeting via video call. These meetings are being streamed live on HDC’s YouTube channel so you can still attend if you wish. In fact, a number of residents have been in contact to say that they really liked being able to follow the meetings in this way and it was a good way of making the workings of the Council more transparent. As you would imagine, the focus of the Full Council meeting was on emergency measures being put in place to enable the Council to support our communities at this time, including making funds available to support the most vulnerable. We are continuing our work on the longer term, non Covid-19, issues that you have raised with us over the last few months. It is sometimes taking a little longer to hear back from people than usual so please bear with us if you are waiting to hear back. Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the BBH residents who have gone out of their way to help others at this time. We know that it has meant a very great deal to lots of people in our community. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk 14

Dramatically improved recycling rates during coronavirus period Horsham District residents have achieved much improved recycling rates for the first quarter of 2020, and particularly since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. Statistics recently released have shown that the quantities of recycling for January, February and March of 2020 are significantly higher than for the same period last year. Additionally, the quality of the recycling collected has dramatically improved with no recycling loads being rejected for poor quality in the month of March, meaning that everything residents have put in their blue-topped bins will be reprocessed into new items. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, Recycling and Waste Cllr Philip Circus commented: “My thanks go out to all our residents who have increased their levels of recycling, despite the difficulties they are facing during these troubling times. These recent achievements come after the Horsham District achieved a recycling rate of 53.5% for 2019, exceeding the 50% target that was set for 2020 ahead of time. Recycling needs to be clean, dry and loose in your bin. For tips to recycle more, check out our website at www.horsham.gov.uk/thinkbeforeyouthrow. ——————————————————————————————————————

Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a national initiative where

active members of local communities join with the support of the Police, to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices.

The Broadbridge Heath CSW scheme have worked to address the concerns of residents from across the whole village, targeting specific roads where speeding issues have been identified. Since the introduction of the social distancing guidelines, all CSW activity in England has been suspended. Unfortunately, the issue of speeding across the village has not gone away, but with the reduced number of cars on the roads, those who are intent on speeding are now easier to spot. Sussex Police continue to patrol our roads, and will take enforcement action where appropriate, but as a community, we need to continue to address the issue of speeding and the anti-social use of vehicles. This behaviour can still be reported to Sussex Police via the Operation Crackdown website, as this will assist them in identifying problem areas, and specific vehicles. If you would like to get involved in our village scheme, please visit the website communityspeedwatch.org where you can sign up, and complete the online training. You can email the local scheme at bbhspeedwatch@gmail.com

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

When all this is over……. what parts of your normal life do you want to rush back to? Life in recent weeks has changed for us all, with some affected worse than others especially those who have lost loved ones. I do think it will change the way we approach life – at least I know it will for me. I never thought I would see the day when I would be restricted from leaving my home but grateful, because I am not ill and I am safe in the knowledge that, unlike some, I don’t have to leave my house. Also I have never been so grateful to the key workers who are ensuring that people are receiving the care they need and that we receive the basic essentials we need. I have read a lot in the last few weeks and the one thing that has really made me stop and think were the comments saying that we all want our lives to return to normal. But take a moment and work out what parts of normal life you want to rush back to. I do believe that we need to stay positive during what is a stressful time for many of us and take some time to work out what changes we would make when life is back to normal. I can think of a number of changes that I will make. Coming out of this is not going to be easy for any of us and financially many of us have had some losses. I have always been a firm believer that having goals gives us direction, focus and the strength to get through tough times. This may not be the answer for everyone but for many of us it could help us to get through the hard times ahead. Many goals will need a financial plan in place to help us achieve them. You may be setting new goals, or your progress towards existing goals may have been affected. If you need a hand with these please give us a call. At Monetary Solutions we are used to working remotely so we are still fully operational, and available to help. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions ( www.monetarysolutions.co.uk ). To discuss the above or any other financial matter, please call us on 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk
