We’re really looking forward to the Broadbridge Heath Village Fete again this year and we’re all planning what we’ll be baking to sell at our stall. We sold out last year as you loved all our cakes, jams, biscuits and other goodies so we’re making sure there’ll be plenty of your favourites, including cup cakes, cookies, fruit crumbles, lemon drizzle cake and lots more. We will also be selling some herbs and plants that we’re now growing so make a note in your diary to come early on Saturday 15 June. Last year lots of you asked where you could get tea or coffee, which wasn’t available but this year, we’re hoping it will be – and it will be near our stall so you can treat yourself to a rock cake or cookie when you come for tea. And that’s not all. Our sister WI, the Bombshells, will be there too with even more good things to eat and something special for the children. Let’s all hope for some more of that lovely weather we had last year. We had a great time at our last get together when two of our members ran an art master class. There we were with paint and brushes having fun as we all had a go at the lovely picture Maureen and Yvonne had prepared for us by filling in the background and giving us templates – couldn’t have been easier....... Or so we thought as we all began our own paintings. We laughed all afternoon as we slapped paint around and ‘created’ our very own works of art. This is mine, with its wobbly beach huts and sorry looking sandcastle. It’s nothing like the beautiful painting we were working from but who cares when we had so much fun - and the time just flew by. If you’d like to join us, you’ll be made very welcome. Just come along to St John’s Community Hall at 2.30 on the second Tuesday in the month, or get in touch for more information – details on the back cover. 3

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club By the time you receive this the season will have ended but at this stage, with three games remaining, the first team are sitting in sixth place in the Southern Combination Premier Division, two wins will ensure the team finish higher than we've ever done before. This season nineteen former Broadbridge Heath Youth team players have played in the first team, seven of those started out playing for our U7s and came all the way through at every age group into the U18s, Reserves and finally the first team. The starting line-up at Langney Wanderers included six former Heath youth players and had it not been for Scott Buchanan picking up an injury in the warm-up it would have been seven. That is something everyone at Broadbridge Heath should be really proud of, we don't just talk about developing players we actually do something about it. Our new Under 23 team have also had a good season, their first ever at this level and they are on target to finish either 3rd or 4th, they do play some really exciting football and had the management had this set of players available from the start of the season then I'm sure they would have picked up some silverware along the way. The Under 18 team finished their season with a 6-1 win over Rottingdean Village, this season has been a learning curve for the players the majority of whom were playing Under 16 football in the Horsham Youth League last season, a big jump in standard but they've coped well and can now look forward to staying together for another campaign at the same level next season. The Juniors continue to grow from strength to strength and are looking for players for next season’s U7s, U11s and U12s and parent coaches/helpers in those respective age groups. Kyle Jordan, another former Heath resident, youth and senior player has joined the coaching staff, Kyle has a reputation as an excellent coach, he has a lot of experience working in the US and is currently coaching at Crystal Palace, so a great acquisition for the club. We would also like to hear from any sponsors for new kit and training equipment, with sponsors name on the website and other social media. If you have a business or know someone who might be able to help then please get in contact. We have finally seen some action regarding our new facilities, we were supposed to have taken ownership long before they closed the old Leisure Centre but deadlines were continually missed and once they closed the old building in October it meant the ground no longer satisfied the FA Ground Grading requirement. A short term backup solution was agreed with the League but that was expected to be for a week or two at most, six months later we're still operating in that backup solution. Continued on next page‌. 4

However in recent weeks there has been plenty of activity on the site and we would like to thank Louise Potter, Liberal/Democrat candidate for Broadbridge Heath and our MP Jeremy Quinn for giving their support and following a meeting between the Football Club, the District Council and developers Countryside we are now hopeful that sufficient progress will be made to give the council the confidence they need to take ownership, and then to transfer the land to the football club in the form of a lease. If all goes well that should happen sometime during the first two weeks of May. For more information you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and on our website http://www.bbh-fc.com/ Come on you Bears!

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp

By the time you read this the first season of the new Sussex Cricket League will have started with our 2nd XI beginning the season on Saturday 27th April. The new League is the biggest in the UK with some 135 clubs, 335 teams and 34 divisions spread over a regional basis throughout the county. It’s all managed by a team of top-notch volunteer administrators who, for example, have negotiated a contract deal with Gray Nicholls to provide 6000 cricket balls for the season. So, where’s the village cricket club in this huge sporting pyramid? After promotion for both teams last season, the 1st X1 are in a very competitive Div 6 West and the 2nd XI in Div 10 North West. It’s going to be a tough season for the 1st’s and some of our key players from last season are not going to be available as frequently. We have also lost permanently Jeff Dawe, our New Zealand left-arm spinner, who has returned home after spending many, many years with the Club. However, new players have already come forward and the Club has enjoyed recently the fabulous indoor net facilities at the Hove county ground. Outdoor nets at the Top Common are every Thursday from 6pm. Our home fixtures for May are as follows: 4th May - 2nd XI v Tilgate CC (League) 11th May – 1st XI v Eastergate CC (League) 18th May – 2nd XI v Warnham CC (League) 25th May – 1st XI v Aldwick CC (League) 26th May – 1st XI v Southwater (T20 Cup) No doubt like many people’s garden lawns, our cricket square did not winter well after the warmth and drought of last year but we are hoping the remedial work we have in hand will quickly put things right. Meanwhile, the battle with the local rabbit population continues ! Colin Case 5

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows The Rainbows have finished the spring term with a visit to our local Guide campsite to build dens. The girls used sticks and string to construct a shelter but then a storm struck and the girls needed to make their shelter waterproof quickly! 2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies This term Broadbridge Heath Brownies has been very busy exploring the new programme! We went on a country walk without leaving the hall (complete with toy sheep and pot plant ‘trees’) which helped us learn all about the countryside code! We also decided to delve into learning more about Horsham, and played ladders to learn about Percy Shelley’s life, then had a crack at writing our own poetry about Horsham, it was fun experimenting with different poetry styles! We also did a bus trip around Horsham to try a mode of transport some of us had never experienced before and spot some of the landmarks! We also got messy with some Easter crafts, making yummy Easter nests with cornflakes and using shaving foam and paint to make swirly paper eggs. Next term we are looking forward to further exploring the new programme and getting out and about to enjoy the warmer weather! An abstract of a poem about Horsham by Sophie Horsham town, town of Horsham Full of shops, simply awesome North to west it’s full to the brim Buskers on the street to us they do sing Let’s lists some good things about this place You will never be bored and it’s pretty safe It’s chaotic in a good way and lots of fun If you go to every shop you will never be done. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides The Guides finished this term by trying to scoop the most incredible nectar! The challenge was to create a device that could lift as much liquid out of a bucket as possible but they only had a short time frame to build and scoop. Our waiting list for Rainbows and Brownies continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes we would love to hear from you. ARE YOU READY FOR THE VILLAGE FETE: NEXT MONTH? SATURDAY 15th JUNE

8

Parish Point of View Kate Bailey, Curate St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. May is one of my favourite months of the year – everywhere the plants are springing up, trees are so many different shades of green, and the days are getting warmer. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been here now for 3 years, we moved into Wickhurst Green in May 2016, and everything around us was new and unfinished (and I can hear some of you fellow WG folk chuckling . . . what’s changed?) and people here were keen to chat, make friends and get to know each other better. And we got to know people at church too, and those living in the other areas around Broadbridge Heath – to get a feel for the place which seemed like different communities, rather than two parts of the same village. In June we will have our Village Fete on the Ducky. Last year it was a fantastic event that really brought our community together, as we enjoyed the wonderful weather, and had a great time. I’m sure that this year it will be even better and the committee are already well underway with the planning. Being part of this community has been a real blessing, even though it seemed very daunting before we arrived here, not knowing what the future held for us as a family. Now we are facing changes with the road that used to be on the outside of the village, but which now separates the old from the new by running down the middle, and is now going to be closed off. There’s a sense of uncertainty of how it will feel – because it’s different from the way it used to be. One day people will be able to look back and think it wasn’t so bad, that it all went smoothly (we hope!) and that’s the way it is. Rather like the fact that our gardens are now full of birds who think that this is the normal way of things. Change is scary when you face it but becomes normal as it ceases to be different and becomes the way of life. Whatever you are facing in the way of change, my prayer is that you won’t find it scary, and that very soon you will be able to look back at this time and see that where you are now is a good place to be. And enjoy the birdsong, however it sounds! God Bless, Revd Kate Bailey

Background to the Downgrading of the Old Bypass Planning Approval for the Wickhurst Green (WHG) and Highwood (HW) developments. In 2007, Horsham District Council (HDC) prepared a “Design and Planning” Document for the WHG and HW developments, which lead to a “Masterplan” in 2008 and a planning application from Countryside in 2009. These documents included provisions that; * The current western part of the Broadbridge Heath bypass will be closed or downgraded in order to help integrate the new development with the existing community; * A dual carriageway east-west link road would be required, south of Broadbridge Heath, with a speed limit of 40mph. BBH Parish Council (BBHPC) strongly opposed any development on the WHG site, highlighting many issues. With regard to “Traffic”, BBHPC contested that; * It had not been demonstrated that it would be possible to have a sensible road layout that would integrate the development with the village. * The impact of the proposed roads layout would result in clogging up of traffic at many points around the area, with the associated increase in noise and pollution. * The separation of through and local traffic would actually be made worse. * Far more sophisticated traffic calming on Billingshurst Road than bumps, speed tables etc. would be required to prevent rat-running. However, the plans including the road layouts were approved in 2009, and the roads around WHG have since been built as per those plans. The planning applications for the Neighbourhood Centre and the houses currently under construction that border the old bypass also require that it must be downgraded before they are completed. Traffic calming - rat-running & speeding Following planning approval for the WHG development, BBHPC and many residents were concerned about the high probability of rat-running and speeding along Billingshurst Road and Old Guildford Road, as the new bypass would take through traffic much further around the village. In October 2010 a consultation document was sent to all residents and a presentation held at St. John’s church hall. Three traffic calming options 10

were presented and 162 votes were returned with comments. There was one option that was clearly preferred by residents over the others. This included changes to priority at the Shelley Drive junction, and removing direct access to the roundabout at the end of Billingshurst Road, installing a new loop onto the downgraded bypass. This preferred option from the consultation is the basis for the works commencing in April 2019, together with the mini roundabout at the end of Shelley Drive which was implemented in 2018. West Sussex County Council (WSCC) recommended further rat running and speeding deterrents to BBHPC, introducing the 20mph speed limits, vehicle activated speed sign, redesign of the junction by the One-Stop, and advisory cycle lanes in 2018. All of this was paid for by the developers in line with their planning application, and cannot be used for anything else. When will the roadworks be completed? The downgrading works are due to finish around October 2019. When all of the development work is completed, Broadbridge Heath will be one village with many of the main community buildings near its centre, including; A refurbished Village Centre building with a new Social Club. An improved play area behind the Village Centre. A Neighbourhood centre with shops and a Nursery school. A shared Foot/Cycle path through the centre of the village A Parish office A new Primary school (and Shelley school nearby) ———————————————————————————————Save the Date: Shelley School Summer Fete - June 28th 2019 Raffle Prizes & Stall Holders Welcome!
