Broadbridge Heath Parish Council

We are pleased to let you know that our first Community Forum meeting In January, successfully brought together several community groups to discuss current issues. These are planned to continue monthly, so please contact us if you are interested in joining this online meeting.

The Parish Council is aware of litter hotspots in the village and have identified where there is no, or limited, bin provision. We continue to look at longer term solutions to the problem, and we would like to bring residents attention to an initiative led by HDC called “Adopt a Street” (details can be found on their website). Councillor Christine Knight, Chair of our Recreation and Environment Committee signed up last year and says, ‘I was unaware of this initiative until I saw a neighbour wearing a Hi-Vis tabard using a litter-picker in my road. After talking to her, I went online and signed up and an HDC officer brought all the equipment to my house the very next day!’ We know other residents are actively doing their bit and thank them for their contribution. If you have signed up to the initiative previously, we would be keen to hear from you, so please let us know. (Olivia – asst@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk). Despite the present restrictions, work within the council continues with all meetings currently online. Work is on-going with some of our bigger projects and minutes from all our meetings can be found on our website. As soon as we have definitive news regarding these projects, we will share them. Whilst COVID-19 restrictions continue, it is great to see so many residents walking in the village and enjoying our open spaces. The daffodils planted over the past few years have started to show at the Newbridge end of the village and at the common; a visual reminder Spring is around the corner!

Broadbridge Bombshells WI Get A Free Facelift

As I sit here writing this article and eating my porridge with blueberries I can feel that my jaw has done a major work out the night before... And that's not because I munched my way through a family sized box of hard centres in front of the telly... But because of the amazing facial yoga session that I did at the Broadbridge Bombshells WI meeting last night! The beauty of Zoom meetings (yes, there are positives!) is that we can take advantage of so many more speakers who aren’t local to BBH, such as our most recent speaker Polina, who usually teaches facial yoga in Somerset, but was able enter our homes via our ipads, laptops and phones and teach us the basics of this amazing exercise. For those of you not in the know, facial yoga is an increasingly popular health trend which involves manipulating your face and neck with your hands and fingers and using specific facial exercises, massage, acupressure and wellbeing techniques which will give your face muscles and skin a full workout to promote a healthy younger looking appearance. Just like going to the gym, but for your face and in essence a natural non-invasive face lift! What’s not to like? My fellow Bombshells and I, along with several visiting guest members from other local WI's twisted, pressed, puffed, craned, fluttered and tweaked our faces doing the exercises with names like ‘puffer fish’, ‘giraffe’ and ‘flirty eyes’ along with Polina. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we all enjoyed the experience, but that we particularly enjoyed the massage and acupressure techniques she taught us, which involved stroking and lightly tapping our faces and necks, it was beautifully relaxing. All in all it seems like a great natural way to reduce wrinkles and puffiness and we all looked relaxed and glowing afterwards with the added benefit of having had a giggle at ourselves at the same time. If you would like more information on face yoga please check out the blog on our website. Our members also continue to meet via Zoom for coffee mornings and book club (we are reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier). Wine club is also due to be relaunched shortly. So if you think this sounds fun why not join us for our next meeting on Tuesday 23rd March at 8pm via Zoom. Please email us for details and also make sure you check out our website, blog and Facebook page for more information. email: bbhwi1951@gmail.com web: www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk Facebook: search Broadbridge Bombshells WI

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows

In the middle of December 2020 there was a small window in which we were allowed to hold face to face meetings we used this time to have a final meeting with the girls that will be moving up to Brownies after Christmas. The girls were all presented with their Pot of Gold and Robyn and Aaliyah achieved their Rainbow Gold Award which is the highest award the girls can earn in Rainbows. Well done Robyn and Aaliyah Back to zoom meetings for the beginning of 2021! The Rainbows started the communicate skills builder level 1 by looking at how we communicate using our faces. This involved all the girls taking turns to make funny faces (sad, bored, excited etc.) whilst everyone else had to try to guess the emotion and then drawing these faces to create a bingo card. We held a true or false quiz on Icelandic facts as part of our Islandic Elf theme. Continuing with communication skills builder the girls learnt a campfire song using Makaton. 2nd BBH Brownies We continued to run our meetings on our Facebook group page and have enjoyed doing all of the activities virtually. We enrolled some of our new girls via a Zoom meeting which gave us all the opportunity to see each other! We were then very excited to be given the go ahead to run 2 face to face meetings with the girls just before Christmas, and in line with the current guidelines we split the group into their school age bubbles and had 2 wonderful evenings making Christmas tree decorations and Christmas cards. Now into the New Year and another lock down we have gone back to Zoom meetings and have given the girls the choice on what activities we shall be doing.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides In between lockdowns 2 and 3 there was an opportunity to present to two of the Guides their Gold Awards (the highest award a Guide can earn) before they moved up to Rangers in January during an outside meeting. Congratulations to Dionne and Saffron Back on zoom from the New Year! The Guides have started their communicate skills builder level 4 by looking at products in the homes for signs and symbols and what they mean. The girls have made a mechanical hand using paper, straws and string.

1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group The Group remains active despite the latest lockdown and all three sections have a range of fun activities to do at home on Zoom planned for this month. Our Beaver Colony are working hard to complete any badges they had already started as well as taking part in a range of fun activities including a scavenger hunt. Both Beavers and Cubs have talked about disability awareness this month, with an emphasis on what we can all do to ensure that everyone can take part in whatever activities we do. The Cubs and Scouts each enjoyed a Zoom baking session, making fork biscuits, which were delicious! All of our group continue to emphasise wellbeing, particularly in these unusual times. We are always on the look out for volunteers to join our friendly team on Committee or as Group Leaders – if you would be interested, even in a very small role, please contact our Group Scout Leader James (gsl1bbh@horshamscouts.com). We are particularly looking for a Beaver Leader or Assistant – on-going support will be provided and we have a willing rota of parent helpers.

Sussex Wildlife Trust Horsham

Brimstone butterfly This is my first wildlife article for the Broadridge Heath and I thought I’d start with a message of hope (and a species that fellow magazine contributor David Bridges would approve of!) because in March my light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming butterfly. On sculpted, vibrant yellow wings male Brimstone butterflies make their elegant entrance into the New Year on warm March days. By the time these Brimstones appear they are already on their last (six) legs. Fresh Brimstone butterflies emerged from their chrysalises in late summer, so by March they could be seven months old – and in butterfly years that’s ancient. Almost all of that time they’ve been hibernating in a hedge, sheltered under Holly and Ivy. Despite the worst winter weather they emerge immaculate in the spring. They must be made of Teflon. This beautiful yellow butterfly is a welcome messenger of what’s to come – the first sulphurous spark to ignite the blaze of spring. Let’s hope that with the spring comes hope for a brighter future for us all. Sussex Wildlife Trust have started working with Horsham District Council on an innovative five-year partnership project called Wilder Horsham District. We’ll be working closely with local communities and landowners to reverse the decline in species and habitats and enrich the natural environment for all residents and visitors. I’ll keep you updated with opportunities for you to get involved and help the wildlife around the parish of Broadridge Heath. https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/wilderhorshamdistrict

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Working smarter not harder With interest rates at an all-time low I think being smarter with our finances is even more relevant. So how can you be smarter with money? Here are some key questions to ask yourself: Are my investments tax efficient enough? Consider moving your existing savings into ISAs and pensions. There may not be an instant gain but the tax benefits can improve the rate of return. With pensions there might be tax due on taking funds out later, but you have tax allowances that can be used to minimise this. Am I using my full personal allowance? This is especially relevant to help minimise your tax when you are drawing funds from a pension or investments, especially if you know you may pay higher tax rates in the future. More than one allowance can be used at a time for different types of income such as interest, dividends or profits on cashing in investments and used in combination they can save a lot of tax. This isn’t always straightforward so if expert advice would help, we offer a number of ways to access our services safely during this lockdown, including video and voice call. We offer a free no-obligation consultation so why not use this time to get your money working smarter? (This is based on our understanding of current taxation, legislation and HM Revenue & Customs practice, all of which are liable to change without notice. The impact of taxation (and any tax reliefs) depends on your circumstances.)
