BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL:

Broadbridge Heath Football Club Like every other football club at our level our pavilion remains closed, only open to allow us to flush the water through the system on a weekly basis and it will remain that way until it's considered safe to reopen. Just when that will be is anyone's guess, the senior section are due to start training on the 11th June but that date now looks very unlikely so we'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile the Spring refurbishment of the main pitch has taken place, this included verti-draining, seeding, fertilizing and spreading 80 ton of sports sand across the surface. We now have a group of volunteers who each come out for an evening to water the pitch and get it ready for when the season does start, whenever that might be. The club are still waiting to hear what the District Councils plan is regarding the two outside pitches, recently these were considered to be in extremely poor condition by an independent company who the District Council called in to look at their condition after large areas of grass had died. . The Council have gone back to the developers who in turn have gone back to the contractors who prepared the pitches and we await a final decision on what they will do about it. As stated last month the worse case scenario would mean completely stripping the ground and relaying it and that could mean we would be unable to use them at all next season and if that happened it would cause us major problems because we plan to have five teams playing there, four of our junior teams and a senior team on a Sunday we also use the area for training sessions, hopefully a decision will be made shortly and then whatever they decide will get done quickly, we'll just have to wait and see. Finally work to complete the landscaping to the north of the pavilion will resume from week commencing 18th May and take approx 3 weeks to complete, when finished it will make getting access to the pavilion direct from the car park much easier, it will also make it much easier for pedestrians and cyclists coming from and to the Wickhurst Green development. CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Very little news to report from us this month, only that the Sussex Cricket League have now put back the potential start of local cricket until the 4th July at the earliest. So, we continue to maintain the cricket ground at the top common in readiness although the potential for recreational team sports (cricket, rugby, hockey, football) starting at the beginning of July is looking increasingly remote. By the time you read this I hope that local golf and tennis will be playing in some form and maybe their organisational experience of that will help inform the subsequent start of team sports. Further news on the situation for all three village sports clubs who play at the Top Common (cricket, tennis and stoolball) can be obtained from their respective websites. Meanwhile, all recreational sports clubs are suffering severe financial impact and are desperately seeking supporting grants from their representative organisations. Our funding lead Ian Stocker and Chair Tim Wells continue to do some great work for us in that respect. I hope that the village sports clubs have some better news for readers next time. In the meantime, l hope that readers are able to get outdoors to enjoy this fabulous weather whilst respecting social distancing and staying safe. Colin Case

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. The new Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath,

What is church? In these times of lockdown where public buildings/places of worship are currently inaccessible, does that mean that churches are really closed? Many churches currently have the slogan “church is not closed, only the building is” on their noticeboards and I recently saw the following cartoon possibly depicting another dimension to the situation: It brings to the fore the meaning of the word ‘church’. A dictionary definition would refer to it as: “a building for public Christian worship” or “public worship of God in such a building”. Is ‘church’ a place, (ie a noun) or could it be more accurately described as a verb (to ‘do’ church)? Do we need a building to ‘do’ church? Clearly in the early Christian church it appears that meetings were more likely to take place in people’s homes and recently, as a result of the lockdown almost all churches have continued to run services ‘virtually’ either by live streaming or pre-recording worship. This is not to mention the regular pastoral phone calls which are the life blood keeping the community connected and ensuring that people know they are loved and cared for. After all, Jesus himself said that this is how we were to show the world that we were his disciples: by how we love one-another. With it has come a greater informality, and arguably a greater accessibility with a recent Guardian article suggesting that up to a fifth of people currently accessing church services have never before been inside a church. Rather than hinder church attendance, the lockdown seems to have revitalized the church into being creative with how ‘church’ is done and reaching more people. Rather than being an irrelevant, social add-on that people can do without, it has become the focal point for many people’s week where they catch up with neighbours, participate in something transcendent, hear an encouraging word and are given hope that their God loves them and has not forsaken them. At St John’s we have taken to using a conferencing platform to live-stream our services. The link to these services can be accessed by emailing the church office at office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk . We are aware that some members of the community do not have the facilities to access live streaming and so have also been providing some pre-recorded services. If you would like to access any of our services, why not find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/St-Johns-Broadbridge-Heath-492043440860334/ or check out our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCmxZSTIbyxGhuxJ6on4C0IA?view_as=subscriber. God bless you and keep you safe during this time, Mark. 10

The flags and bunting were out in our street for the VE Day 75th anniversary celebrations and there was a “virtual” street party with people bringing out their garden chairs and tables and enjoying afternoon tea as they chatted (well, shouted really) across the road with their neighbours. This anniversary has been a reminder that no matter how hard we’re finding things at the moment; it’s nothing compared to the sacrifices of so many all those years ago and we should never stop showing our gratitude - just as we are now so grateful to all those who are making sacrifices to keep us safe.

Our WI is still trying to find ways to keep in touch. There’s so much available online to help us get together individually or in groups so, like lots of other people, we decided to organise a quiz. Some of us found the technology a bit challenging - but a few of us managed to get together in the end and it was lovely to see smiling faces enjoying a WI ‘get together’ again after such a long time. When we do it again, we may have to have a couple of ground rules. I’m not naming names but there was cake and chocolate in some households…..So we’ll all have to get our cuppa and cake before we start next time – and there were a few interruptions from ‘WISHES’ (WI Supportive Husbands) who may have thought the rest of us couldn’t hear them giving the answers! Who cares? The aim was to get together and have lots of laughs and we certainly achieved that. Last month I mentioned that our hedgehogs were awake and now I see that bats have also come out of hibernation. If you look out at dusk (or dawn, if you’re up) you may spot them whizzing through the air, hoovering up insects. It’s so good to see them again, as their numbers dropped over the last few years because of the weather. There’s so much we can still enjoy if we look for it. News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath Given the circumstances, it's very much business as usual at the council. Thanks to the work of the council staff we are back to our usual meeting schedule. Things haven’t always been smooth, but we are doing our best to make the best of it and continue to make decisions in the council. If you are interested in watching live council meetings, you can do so on HDC’s YouTube page. They remain available to watch any time on this page. Residents may be aware that the planning application for a retirement village just outside Broadbridge Heath was due to come to planning committee at the beginning of May. However, Natural England had a few questions about the wildlife present on the site and therefore it was removed from the agenda. This is a good thing; it gives the council time to find out more about the wildlife on the site and whether it poses risks to protected species, it allows us to ask further questions about the application and it gives residents more time to get in touch with us to give their opinion on the application. Whether you’re for or against, we’d be interested to hear what you have to say. The planning application reference number is DC/19/1897 and you can find out more about this on the council’s website. Finally, we’d like to once again thank all of those who are working to keep the country going at this tough time. Many in the village will be putting themselves at risk to support the area, thank you doesn’t go far enough. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk

Since lockdown the leaders of Broadbridge Heath Rainbows, Brownies and Guides have kept the Guiding light going in the village by sending the girls guiding activities to complete at home. The rainbows have so far completed 9 interest badges, 10 skills builders, 12 theme awards and 4 girls have earned their bronze awards and 2 their silver awards (these two have also nearly finished their gold awards). A number of rainbows and guides completed the 2.6 challenge and have raised ÂŁ80 for Clemsfold District Guides and ÂŁ40 of Horsham Division Guides.

The rainbows and guides decorated their homes with homemade bunting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The Brownies have been working through the Theme awards, Space badge, Spring paw print and Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The girls made cards and sent them to Captain Tom for his 100th birthday. Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

When all this is over……. what parts of your normal life do you want to rush back to? Life in recent weeks has changed for us all, with some affected worse than others especially those who have lost loved ones. I do think it will change the way we approach life – at least I know it will for me. I never thought I would see the day when I would be restricted from leaving my home but grateful, because I am not ill and I am safe in the knowledge that, unlike some, I don’t have to leave my house. Also I have never been so grateful to the key workers who are ensuring that people are receiving the care they need and that we receive the basic essentials we need. I have read a lot in the last few weeks and the one thing that has really made me stop and think were the comments saying that we all want our lives to return to normal. But take a moment and work out what parts of normal life you want to rush back to. I do believe that we need to stay positive during what is a stressful time for many of us and take some time to work out what changes we would make when life is back to normal. I can think of a number of changes that I will make. Coming out of this is not going to be easy for any of us and financially many of us have had some losses. I have always been a firm believer that having goals gives us direction, focus and the strength to get through tough times. This may not be the answer for everyone but for many of us it could help us to get through the hard times ahead. Many goals will need a financial plan in place to help us achieve them. You may be setting new goals, or your progress towards existing goals may have been affected. If you need a hand with these please give us a call. At Monetary Solutions we are used to working remotely so we are still fully operational, and available to help. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions ( www.monetarysolutions.co.uk ). To discuss the above or any other financial matter, please call us on 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk
