Ever heard of ‘yarn bombing’? This is the definition: “The act of covering objects or structures in public places with decorative knitted or crotcheted material, as a form of street art.” Whether it’s to highlight a cause, or just brighten up an urban area, yarn bombing is a great way to attract attention.

Sussex Green Living wants to inspire all of us to reduce our impact on the planet. For example, in the UK we’re producing and throwing away more than 5 million tonnes of plastic each year and around 75% of it goes into landfill (where it will remain indefinitely) or it’s incinerated, adding to global warming. To raise awareness during our Year of Culture, Sussex Green Living are going to ‘ocean bomb’ Horsham town centre between 28 June and 6 July. Ocean bombing is like yarn bombing, but using plastic-based materials such as acrylic wool or up-cycled plastic. Our WI is more than happy to help as it links in with our own “End Plastic Soup” campaign. Microplastic fibres shed from synthetic clothing with every wash are too small to be caught by washing machine filters or the sewage system so they end up polluting the ocean. A single wash could release up to 700,000 fibres, turning our oceans into plastic soup. Microplastic pollution can poison the food chain - the long term effects of which are unknown. We do know they build up in animals’ digestive tracts reducing their ability to absorb energy from food, so we need to act now to find solutions. That’s why we’re working with others to raise awareness of the problem – and do it in ways that we hope will make you smile.

Horsham Normandy WI plan on bombing the bandstand so right now local WIs are helping them by knitting and crocheted like mad. Here’s what I’ve done with some left over yarn I was given – it’s nearly 8 feet long. When the event is over, the yarn will be recycled to make blankets for a local animal rescue centre (and talking of recycling, my top is made from 100% recycled polyester clothing). Do pop along to the Carfax on 6 July and see the ocean bombed bandstand. It will be amazing! But before that, we hope to see you at the Village Fete on 15 June when we’ll have lots of delicious things for you to buy. If you’d like to join us, or find out more about us, our contact details are on the back cover. 4

THE BROADBRIDGE BOMBSHELLS W.I. The WI, resource for women to educate, gain experiences and friends.

We are looking forward to another splendid community celebration with the BBH Village Summer Fete almost upon us. Our members are busy choosing cakes and biscuits to bake for you to buy and enjoy with your cup of tea/coffee which you can purchase from the church stall and our wonderful fellow afternoon WI ladies will be selling an array of their jams, preserves and whole cakes for you to take home. Why are we looking forward to the fete so much? Well, there are countless benefits of holding these community events and we should do all that we can to encourage and promote them. Festivals and fairs reinforce the identity of towns and villages, keeping traditions alive and creating new ones. It gives a community the chance to show off what makes them unique and builds pride. It also encourages visitors, promoting and benefiting local businesses. Most importantly though, community gatherings are just plain fun. They give something that all the residents can look forward to attending no matter who they are or how old they are and builds greater bonds between friends, families and neighbours. So here’s to another busy bustling village fete. At the Bombshells we are all about gatherings, keeping up traditions and building new ones, showing off and having fun. Last month we hosted the first meeting of our new group, The Wine Club. This involved blind tasting and the scoring of 5 mystery wines. It was a fun evening where we all learnt something new. One member learnt that she actually likes red wine after all. Why not come along and see what we get up to or check out our blog on the website. We are always looking for new ladies to join us. We have meet-ups during the day as well as in the evenings so regardless of your daily commitments there will be something for you. Last Tuesday of the month, 8pm. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club We completed our 99th season of football with two excellent victories, beating local rivals Loxwood 5-0 in our last senior football match at the Leisure Centre and 4 days later winning 6-0 away to Arundel a result which sadly saw the hosts relegated on goal difference. The results meant the team finished in 6th place, our highest ever position. The Under 14 Sunday team ended the season in style by beating Marle Place Wanderers 7-1 in a playoff to become champions of the Mid-Sussex Youth League and next season will be playing a very good standard of football in the top division of the Mid Sussex Under 15 league against some very good sides which is just what the players need to help in their development. The Junior Section hosted its 4th Annual Charity Day on the 4th May in memory of Billy Lee to help raise funds for Sarcoma UK and the Junior Section. This year the organisers decided to run a 6-a-side football tournament and it proved to be another success for the club raising just over £2,400. Work is continuing on our new facilities, Countryside have gave the football club permission to finish some urgent work inside the pavilion to allow the FA Ground Grading inspection to go ahead on the 23rd May and it should now just be a matter of weeks before we finally take ownership. Hopefully we can give some encouraging news on that in next months magazine. For more information you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and on our website https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc/ CRICKET Well the summer is now with us officially and, so far, we have managed four weekends of cricket without rain playing too much of a role. That keen east wind was unpleasant but it looks as though the prevailing westerly’s have arrived to provide some warmth to help the cricket grass grow – and my sweet peas I hope as they look a bit sick at the moment. However, believe it or not, what we and the football club both need is rain as our pitches are very dry for the time of year and at the Top Common, we are already hosing the square to get the grass growing. Meanwhile, the new addition to our collection of boys toys machinery has arrived and the outfield mower will soon be seen trundling round the outfield – courtesy of the successful crowdfunding scheme. We have also managed to coax our grass-cutting tractor into life to manage better the undergrowth beyond the boundary, something that no other sports ground in the area has to do - but is the price we pay for having an idyllic country setting for cricket, tennis and stoolball. 6

The team results have been pretty good too. The 1st XI have won two of their three matches in the testing Div 6, the last one at Goring by one wicket with two balls to spare, with our last wicket pair putting-on 19. Matt Varghese’s 70 was key to the win. The 2nd XI have won two of their three games as well, including a satisfying win over next door neighbours Warnham with Tim Wells and Matt Tyson putting on 157 for the first wicket and the returning Ben Johnson getting 5 - 28. Other notable individual performances include Shaji Philip with 43 and 4 - 15 against Eastergate, Matt Tyson 52 against Tilgate and Matt Varghese 83* against Horsham Trinity IIIs. Our home league fixtures for June are as follows: 1st June - 1st XI v Crawley Eagles II 8th June – 2nd XI v Ifield IV 15th June – 1st XI v Rustington 22nd June – 2nd XI v West Chiltington III 29th June – 1st XI v Findon II Meanwhile, the battle with the local rabbit population still continues so if any readers have inexpensive ideas about how we might deal with them please let me know. Colin Case. Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club STOOLBALL The season has just started with a defeat to Barns Green on a lovely bright evening in April , our star players were Emily Vowels with 70 with a run out on the very last ball & Ellie Polson who was like a Ninja all over the field preventing extra 4’s that we were being hit for, we have several new players this year and are always looking for newbies to come along any try out this local game. We still have the backing of BBH Cricket Club as without their support we would have no-where to train or play our league games on a Monday evening, with training on a Friday evening 6.30pm to 7.45pm We are again supporting BBH Fete 15th June with our “Crockery Shy” we had a smashing time last year! Also this year we are helping out the BBH WI Tuesday 25th June with a Stoolball taster session , as well as the successful Junior Stoolball Academy on 7th, 14th & 21st August 10.30 am to Mid-day. This will be the 7th Year that Broadbridge Heath Stoolball Club will be running the Junior Stoolball Academy during the 2019 summer holidays It is open to boys and girls from Reception to year 6 who want to learn more about this marvellous, action packed game. The children will be taught by qualified coaches and learn how to bat, bowl and field. The Venue: Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club. The Dates: Wednesday 7th, 14th & 21st August 2019. £3.00 per session. Parish Point of View Brian New, Assistant Priest. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. Is it a Café or is it Church?! Or can it be both? On the first Sunday of the month at 10.30 in St John’s we have what we call Cafe@Church, an easy and relaxed way of getting together, meeting people, having something light to eat, perhaps reading the paper, perhaps playing on Scalextric (!) And then we gather in the Church for a few songs and a five-minute thought for the day. Each month we have a theme and in May it was Star Wars on the (very) slender basis that we had just missed Star Wars Day – on May the Fourth. So, the short “thought for the day” started “A long long time ago in a country far far away - or 2,000 years ago in Galilee”. We’ve just celebrated Easter and the most amazing event – Jesus brought to life and appearing to his disciples to show that even death cannot hold him. An incredible claim by Christians – based on the accounts in the Bible – and something I know many people struggle to believe or accept. To continue the Star Wars theme; a New Hope has come into being at Easter and the Dark Side has been defeated. God has shown his love and forgiveness and invited all people into a living relationship with him. This is truly good news! Although by the time you read this, memories of Easter are perhaps fading and you may be thinking more about summer holidays or exams; for Christians it’s Easter all the time. I believe that we have a relationship today and every day with a living Jesus because of Easter. That changes everything for me and for millions of Christians worldwide. Want to know more? You’d be very welcome to join us at any time, but perhaps start with our Cafe@Church as an easy way to meet a few people and, hopefully, meet God too. ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets.

At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Findon Way, Corsletts Avenue, Harris Way, Harding Lane, River Walk, Weston Avenue.

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Lifetime Allowance – a tax on your pension I can’t overemphasise the importance of having all your cards on the table for financial planning. Recently, I’ve encountered clients making contributions to their pension unaware that they may be more at risk of paying a Lifetime Allowance tax charge when they take their benefits. The Lifetime Allowance tax charge currently arises when you take pension benefits in excess of £1,055,000. This may not be a bad thing, but unless you have any form of protection you have to pay a tax charge of 55% for the excess taken in the form of a lump sum, or 25% if you take it as an income. Introduced in 2006, the Lifetime Allowance was set at £1.5m, a point at which I didn’t feel that many clients would be affected. However, having reached its highest level of £1.8m in 2010/11 it was later reduced again to £1m by 2016/17, now slowly increasing again. Although this level may seem high, I have met people who don’t realise this is an issue, due to how it is calculated. For example, if you have a final salary pension you multiply your annual pension by 20 and add the lump sum entitlement. You may try to avoid this by not taking all the benefits, but any unused benefits are assessed at age 75 and the excess above the Lifetime Allowance will be taxed. Also, there are other situations where pension benefits are measured against the Lifetime Allowance. So if you want to know more about Lifetime Allowance charges, solutions and options for protection please do give us a call.
